Letting Spiders Live Can Actually Help Out in Your Home

We’ve all encountered a spider or two in our homes. And in most cases, we kill it as quickly as we found it.

But in actuality, letting those scary-looking creatures live could actually benefit your home. While spiders may send fear down your spine, they play an important part in our indoor ecosystem.

Though most people would like to believe that spiders exist only in nature, they can be found in most homes. Whether accidentally trapped or simply stopping by for an unwelcomed visit, spiders will take up residence in your home.

And while that may seem sinister, it actually is a great thing for your home.

Matt Bertone and his colleagues conducted a visual survey of 50 North Carolina homes to determine just exactly what type of arachnids live under people’s roofs. It turns out that every home had spiders crawling around.

The most common species they found were cobweb spiders and cellar spiders—both of which build webs in order to trap potential prey. Cellar spiders take things a step further by mimicking prey in order to trick their cousins into becoming dinner.

So how does letting spiders live benefit your home?

Well, spiders capture nuisance pests and disease-carrying insects like mosquitoes that could pose a potential problem for you and the rest of the inhabitants in your home.

In fact, there’s even a species of jumping spiders that specifically like to dine on blood-filled mosquitoes.

In most cases, spiders present no real harm to humans. So even if you encounter a spider the next time you’re cleaning out your cluttered closet, consider letting it live so that the natural ecosystem can continue thriving.

And if you really can’t stomach the thought of a spider residing in your home, at least capture and release it outside.

Do you have a fear of spiders? What do you do when you encounter one in your home?

Tell us more in the comments below!

A Man Proved That 5 “Self-Made Billionaires” Had a Lot of Help Getting to the Top

We all love to hear that old, classic story of the boot-strapped self-made billionaire, right? It inspires us all to think that anyone can achieve anything if they just work for it hard enough.

The trouble is, that isn’t usually true. Sure, every so often someone might pull off the unthinkable, but generally, most very successful people have had help somewhere along the way.

For many people, that often means having been born into a family that already has considerable wealth.

This is definitely the case for each of these 5 “self-made” billionaires that are regularly touted as having done all the work by themselves.

Recently, one man decided to break apart why each of the people on this list isn’t as self-made as they might want you to believe.

1. Jeff Bezos

We all know the story of Amazon, right? Jeff Bezos founded the company in 1994 in his garage. It’s pretty impressive!

Well, the truth is, Jeff had a hefty investment from two wealthy benefactors: his mom and dad.

2. Bill Gates

As Aidan explains, this “rags to riches” storyline is often found in the biographies of the rich and famous.

However, it’s not usually entirely… true.

Oh yeah… Bill had A LOT of help.

Sure, Bill Gates has skills, but he definitely had significant help along the way.

3. Warren Buffet

Warren is a well-known investor, and his whole story goes like this: he was a scrappy kid who was just really good at investing.

Except, well, his dad was… a pretty big deal.

If you want to see something REALLY eye opening… look at how much wealth Buffet had accumulated by the time he left… HIGH SCHOOL.

4. Mark Zuckerberg

Many people know the general story surrounding the founding of Facebook. Mark started the site when he was in college. Precocious, right?

Well, Mark was getting by on more than just his brain.

The tuition for the school he attended alone was more than many families make in a year.

He was also fortunate to already be in the right social circles.

5. Kylie Jenner

Kylie has managed to build a massive cosmetics empire by a young age. It’s really impressive!

But there’s no denying that she comes from a wildly successful and wealthy family.

Without the connections afforded to her by her family, it’s not likely that she would be in the position she is today… just like everyone else on this list.

Can you believe some of those stories?

It’s truly impressive what each of these people has built, and it’s also worth knowing how they got to where they are.

Don’t forget to share this eye-opener with your friends, and let us know which part surprised you the most in the comments!

Women, Read This Before You Participate in the Black and White Selfie Challenge

There’s a new social media challenge every couple of weeks, and those of us who want to do better and be more aware of how our presence in certain spaces takes up room for the people whose voices need to be heard have become reticent to join in.

We need to ask questions before we accept a viral chain letter and post a selfie, take up a hashtag spot, and the like, even though someone we love and trust sent the challenge along.

Which is all to say, let’s talk about the origins behind this black and white women’s selfie challenge, because it’s a bit more than a simple and vague “women supporting women.”

Actress Florence Pugh (who blew you away in Little Women), shed light on the challenge’s background when she posted a silly black and white photo of her own.

“I’ve been told that the true meaning of this hashtag and this b&w photo – ‘It is to shed light onto the Istanbul Convention, women are being subjected to violence and this convention is to end forgiveness for the attacker/murderers.

With that in mind, adjust your hashtags if you didn’t already do so.

Let’s ride gals.”

New York Times writer Tariro Mzezewa also verifies this is how the challenge started, saying that she spoke to some Turkish women who said,

“It started there as a response to them being frustrated over always seeing black and white photos of women who have been killed.”

Dr.  Pragya Agarwal chimed in as well, adding,

“This was started by Turkish women to say that they are appalled by the Turkish govt decision to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention, much like Poland.

This is to say that no woman stands alone, we deserve to take up space, we are all #womensupportingwomen.”

Black and white selfies. It isn’t just a game of hot or not. Or an exercise in vanity. It is not just a mindless challenge that women are undertaking to post their sexiest snaps. These are some of the criticisms that this #challenge has faced. It is a very serious gesture of defiance in support of the Turkish Women (Turkey has one of the highest femicide rate), in support of Pinar Gultekin who was killed in the most violent manner, in support of every woman who has felt threatened and unsafe. This is show of solidarity to say that we stand together, we are unafraid, we are fed up of the lack of accountability for the perpetrators. This was started by Turkish women to say that they are appalled by the Turkish govt decision to withdraw from the Isanbul convention much like Poland. This is to say that no woman stands alone, we deserve to take up space, we are all #womensupportingwomen This is not just performative, this is hopefully not just tokenistic, this is for PINAR GULTEKIN. Poland left the Instanbul Convention, which is a European treaty aimed at protecting women against violence, and Turkey is considering doing the same.

While the original push behind the hashtag challenge has gotten a bit muddied, women like Padma Lakshmi and Alexa Chung have used their selfies and posts to lift up women like Breonna Taylor, Sandra Bland, Natasha McKenna, and Michelle Cusseaux – all in need of justice after brutal treatment.

If you’re going to take part, keep all of this in mind, and maybe make your space somewhere that boosts the signals of women around the world who are in need of justice, of strength, and of support against power.

In the process, you and your followers are sure to learn something about the plight of the women we’re supporting around the globe, making the social media solidarity all the more meaningful.

Ridiculous Text Messages That’ll Make You Laugh… and Roll Your Eyes

It’s crazy to think about a time before text messaging.

I fought it for a while when all my friends started doing it probably back in 2003, but I eventually gave in, and honestly, I’d prefer to NEVER talk on the phone to anyone ever again.

But that’s just me.

And you know if you spend most of your time texting, you’re going to have some pretty ridiculous exchanges with people.

Here are some perfect examples. Let’s take a look.

1. What a charmer.

Did you fall for this guy, or what?

2. Hahaha. This is great.

He seems like a keeper to me. But what do I know…?

3. Zing! Got ya!

I laughed at this. Not gonna lie.

4. That’s not what I meant!

I swear! I said MILD.

5. One time only.

That will never happen again. EVER.

6. Oh good, you only inhaled it.

We got a smart one on our hands!

7. That ended with a bang.

Nice work, everyone!

8. Who is this?

And what on Earth are you talking about?

9. Is anyone gonna show up?

It doesn’t look good so far…

10. Might want to go to the ER.

I can’t say I wouldn’t have done the same, though…

11. I did, too!

I’m freakin’ out!

12. No one should ever receive a message like this.

This is horrifying!

13. Don’t mess with Deanna.

She’ll give you the business every time!

Oh, boy…

How about you? Have you received (or accidentally sent) any ridiculous text messages lately?

If so, please talk to us in the comments! And share some screenshots!
