Tom Cruise’s Movies Do Better the More He Runs

A Tom Cruise movie without running is like a banana split without the cherry on top. Sure, you could eat it and it’d still be fine, but that cherry always makes it a bit better.

And now, to honor the man himself, the folks at Rotten Tomatoes have crunched the numbers and come up with an indisputable fact: the more Tom Cruise runs in a movie, the better it is. These geniuses estimate that Cruise has run over 24,000 feet throughout his prolific career onscreen.

The numbers show that “movies featuring Cruise running more than 1,000 feet have a higher Tomatometer average (a huge 71 percent) than the movies in which he runs less than that, or not at all – and the same movies make more money at the box office, with an average inflated international gross of $538 million.” Here are the top 10 Cruise running films:

1. Mission: Impossible III – 3,212 feet

2. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol – 3,066 feet

3. War of the Worlds – 1,752 feet

4. Minority Report – 1,562 feet

5. The Firm – 1,241 feet

6. Edge of Tomorrow – 1,065 feet

7. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back – 1,051 feet

8. The Mummy – 1,022 feet

9. Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation – 1,007 feet

10. Vanilla Sky – 832 feet

So, as they say, the proof is in the pudding.

And now, enjoy this video of every Tom Cruise run ever in a film (up until now, I’m sure there will be more to come).

15 Things They Do Differently in the “Land Down Under”

Even if you’ve never visited Australia, you’ve probably got a rough idea of what it’s like: Kangaroos, the Sydney Opera House, and hot weather. But what you might not know is that a visit to the “Land Down Under” is actually like stepping into another world.

It’s true – from the animals to the food, people, and landscape, Australia isn’t like any other place on earth.

#15. They talk differently.

It’s known as Ozenglish (because people refer to Australia as “Oz”), and it’s sort of the same but sort of not. Here are some examples:

Australia = Straya
Mosquitoes = Mozzies
Definitely = Defo
Afternoon = Arvo

And make sure you greet everyone with a relaxed “G’day, mate!”

#14. Their failed police dogs get cush jobs.

Gavel, a German Shephard who crashed and burned at police dog training because he was too friendly, is now Queensland’s first Vice-Regal Dog. What’s that? Well, he works at the Government House greeting visitors and in general enjoying life.

#13. They celebrate the Queen’s birthday when they damn well feel like it.

The Queen of England is still technically lording it over Australia, but even though her actual birthday is in April, most Australian states celebrate it sometime in the fall – because there are other holidays in April and they needed a break in the fall.

Touche.

#12. Their killer beaches.

If you wanted to visit one Australian beach a day, it would take you almost 30 years to see them all. 4 out of 5 Aussies lives less than 50km from a coast. That sounds awesome!

#11. Wallabies.

Australia is home to several strange (to us) species of animals, and wallabies are no exception! These aren’t actually tiny kangaroos but an entirely different species – one that enjoys opium, which is legally grown in Australia.

The wallabies go into poppy fields and run around in circles, according to farmers who observe the behavior.

#10. Pavlova.

This is a cake popular in Australia and New Zealand. It’s made with meringue and topped with cream and fresh fruit and was named after the famous Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova (because it’s as light as she danced).

#9. They have wild camels.

When you think of camels, your mind probably goes to the Middle East, but there are approximately 750,000 camels wandering around the Australian outback. They took well to their adopted homeland after being imported in the 19th century to help move heavy loads.

#8. The sheep are everywhere.

Australia is home to 72 million sheep. It’s a great place to get a lamb dinner, consequently, if you’re into that sort of thing.

#7. They have a pink lake.

This pink lake is a top tourist destination, and even though the color is a bit of a mystery, scientists believe a bacteria (not microalgae) causes the salty water in Lake Hillier to take on the bright pink hue.

#6. Thongs.

No, not the swimsuit kind – the kind we now call “flip-flops” in the U.S. It’s virtually never cold there so to Aussies, thongs are year-round, all-occasion footwear.

#5. The wombat.

This funny-looking marsupial is native to Australia and doesn’t spring up indigenously anywhere else. Even with their short legs and labored gate, they can spring up to 25 miles per hour – I sure would like to see that!

#4. The snakes.

Australia is home to 21 of the 25 most deadly venomous snakes in the world, but only about 2 people a year die from snakebites – and those are usually people trying to kill or catch the snake in the first place. They may seem terrifying, but the answer seems to be to leave them in peace.

Unless they’re trying to eat your little dog or something. And maybe even then, depending on how much you like your dog.

#3. Including giant pythons.

But don’t worry – even though statistics say nearly 80% of houses in some provinces have a python living nearby, they mostly eat mice and rats (that’s a good thing!) and then just hang around digesting for months.

#2. Stromatolites.

These are the oldest and largest living fossils on earth and are made up of microbial deposits of blue-green algae.

#1. Uluru

It sounds alien, and this well-known massive rock looks like it belongs on another planet, as well. It’s around 600 million years old and changes colors depending on the time of day and year, ranging from a greyish-pink to a bright red. Some people think it resembles an elephant sleeping on its side.

12 Internet Myths That Should Be Put to an End

The internet is great at spreading information very quickly. When the information is true, that’s a good thing, but when the information is false, like an old myth or hoax, then it can be dangerous and downright annoying. Below are 12 internet myths that just won’t seem to go away – even though they need to, because they’re 100% untrue.

#12. James Earl Jones had to wear his Darth Vader costume in order to get into “white only” clubs in London.

First of all, there were no “white only” clubs in London in 1979, when this image was taken. Second, Mark Hamill confirms that Jones actually never wore the costume, in or out of the studio, because he only voiced the character.

#11. Arnold Schwarzenegger had to spend the night outside when he couldn’t find a hotel room.

I don’t know who believes this – the act himself posted the photo of himself “sleeping” under a statue of him as a younger man with the caption “how times have changed.”

Someone else stole it and made up the story.

#10. Nikola Tesla was a swimming instructor.

Sure, the guy in this photo looks like Tesla, but given that it was taken in 1898 (when Tesla was in his 40s and doing quite well as far as cash) it seems like nothing more than a case of mistaken identity. Unless you believe in time travel, I guess.

#9. This description of how a wolf pack travels.

Someone just made it up. Chadden Hunter, who took the photo, explained that this is simply how a pack hunts a bison, and the wolf in the front is the alpha, not the old and weak.

#8. Barack Obama posed with a sleeping guy on the subway.

Cute, but fake. It’s a clever merge of two photographs.

#7. The “ancient astronaut” on the wall of a 16th-century cathedral in Spain.

Well…except the cathedral was restored in 1992 by artist Jeronimo Garcia, who decided to add a few nods to the 20tth century. In addition to the astronaut, there’s also this faun holding an ice cream cone.

#6. The female wolf protects the male in a fight.

This caption claims that the female wolf pretends to be scared but is really protecting the male’s throat. Not true, says photographer Jean Paul – she simply captured a moment when one of the wolves jumped back (and all of the wolves are likely male).

#5. Melania Trump’s grandmother was a Soviet pilot.

Not only is Melania Trump originally from Slovenia, not Russia, but the photo is of actress Janet Leigh playing a Soviet spy in Jet Pilot, a 1950s film.

#4. The giant hornet is literally a giant.

This image has of the insect has been floating around for a while now, and while the description of the hornet’s sting (like a hot nail) and the number of deaths it can cause in a year are true, the size is definitely not. The one in the picture is a 3D model. Here’s what it actually looks like (still terrifying, if you ask me):

#3. A crazy Russian sunset.

This popular “not Photoshopped” image is…sort of telling the truth. Except it’s two non-Photoshopped images put together – the sky was taken from Dutch photographer Marieke Mandemaker and put behind a photo of Moscow’s Krymsky Bridge.

#2. Cars in the States are melting because of the heat.

They are melting, but it’s because of a nearby fire and not the heat. Not today, anyway.

#1. This image of a whale that died from eating ocean trash.

Though plenty of ocean animals are killed by pollution and garbage every year, this particular image is an art installation created by Greenpeace and displayed in the Philippines.

These 10 Cost-Saving Home Hacks Really Work

The internet is full of hacks for your home that claim to save you all kinds of time and money, but how many of them actually work? Who knows? But I’m happy to report that these 10 tips definitely have some potential – and they’ve been tried and endorsed by the people who shared them!

#10. An easy fix for a stinky house.

Teenagers, dogs, someone cooked eggs that morning…there are a hundred reasons your house might get a bit of a funk to it. Alternatively, if your house is on the market, they say to have it smelling homey and like baked goods to draw in buyers.

The solution? A drop of vanilla extract rubbed on your light bulbs. Mmmmmm.

#9. Save toilet paper.

If you’ve got a small child, you’ve got a problem with wasted toilet paper. But if you simply bend the roll into an oval shape, it will squish up against the wall and your tyke won’t be able to pull the entire roll loose in one go.

Seriously! So simple.

#8. Inventory your freezer.

You can write right on the outside with a dry erase marker, then erase when you take something out. What a genius way to stop yourself from buying stuff you have or digging through looking for that package of steaks you’re “sure” are still in there!

#7. Foil those annoyingly sticky stickers once and for all.

In the day and age of the easy peel-off price tags, I’ll never know why some companies still want to drive us mad with the old kind that refuse to come all the way off and leave a sticky residue behind when they do. But now, you’ve got an easy fix – a paper towel and some hand sanitizer.

Done and done.

#6. Implement the “1-minute rule.”

If something is going to take you less than a minute, do it now. This will help keep your house tidy and keep your to-do list from piling up!

#5. Ditch your iron, but still have smooth clothes.

Just pop a couple of ice cubes in the dryer with your clothes, and voila! Lazy and chic.

#4. Bra. Hooks.

These will change your life – bras don’t fit in drawers and they don’t belong in drawers. Hang some cheap, simple hooks on the back side of your closet doors instead and watch your life transform for $5.

#3. Organize your cleaning supplies.

This see-through plastic shoe organizer makes your things easy to see and grab – way better than a dark cabinet you have to bend down to get to, if you ask me.

#2. Freshen your drawers.

You know how candles burn low and it’s hard to get them to light and stay lit, but they still smell good? Yes? Take those beloved scents and stick them in the backs of your drawers and into your linen closets to keep those spaces smelling great.

#1. Those pesky, tiny ants.

Soak cotton balls in peppermint oil and place them in crevices and along windows, etc, where ants and spiders tend to worm their way inside – you’ll thank m, because those little ants are just the worst to get rid of!

What’s Really Inside the Hot Dog You’re Eating?

We are in full-blown hot dog season right now. Actually, hot dog season is all year long, but the summer is when we’re all going to cookouts, baseball games, and food trucks to load up on wieners.

But have you ever taken the time to sit back and think about what’s actually in all those hot dogs that you’re stuffing your face with?

All of us have heard the rumors over the years about the disgusting ingredients inside that foot long. But trust me – they may not be the most healthy concoction ever dreamed up, but hot dogs are 100% FDA approved.

So what’s in them? Well, a whole lot of “trimmings”, which are discards of meat cuts leftover at the slaughterhouse (that’s a nice image). Think a lot of fatty tissue, sinewy muscle, meat from an animal’s head, and even the liver sometimes. These trimmings can also contain animal blood, skin, and feet (but it’s all edible). All of these leftovers are cooked to kill bacteria, made into a paste, and then ground up.

It’s also at this point that other ingredients are added for flavor and to help with curing the meat that will one day be a delicious hot dog. After this process, the ground up paste is put into casings and cooked all the way. Then there’s a water rinse, the dogs are removed from the casing, and they’re packaged for all of us to buy. So now you know, and you can put some of the (more) disgusting rumors to rest. Enjoy your summer dogs – I know I will!

Here’s How You Can Spot Bed Bugs on Airplanes

If you’re traveling this summer, you need to keep an eye out for bed bugs. Having the misfortune of getting attacked by bed bugs in a hotel (or maybe even your own house), is gross and uncomfortable.

Well, now those disgusting little insects have found their way onto airplanes.

The best thing you can do when you board a flight and take your seat is to keep an eye out for the buggers (and alert the crew immediately). There are other precautions you can take as well to avoid an annoying and potentially painful couple of days after your flight: Bring your own pillow and blanket if you’re planning on snoozing throughout your journey. Also, bed bugs can’t bite through your clothes, so you should wear long sleeves and pants. You can also buy and bring your own seat covers if you want to take extra care.

Passengers have been complaining lately about bed bugs on flights and have been leaving their voyages all bit up and comfortable. The fact is that bed bugs can be easily carried from hotel rooms to the airport and then onto planes, so it isn’t too much of a stretch that this would eventually happen.

You usually won’t notice bed bug bites until a couple of days later, so it’s wise to be safe just in case. And if you’re actually getting eaten alive in your airplane seat, chances are YOU’RE the one who brought the bed bugs on your flight. So after you notify the flight attendants, you should probably call your hotel as well.

Let’s hope all of our future flights are bug-free!
