Here’s a Defense of the English Language as Told by a Very Passionate Tumblr Blog

People who learn English as a second language will often tell you that it’s not exactly easy. There are a lot of things about English that just don’t make sense at all, especially when you’ve grown up speaking something else.

However, the same can be said for other languages… it’s just really fun to make fun of English since it’s still globally a very powerful language.

One person recently took to Tumblr to offer up a quick defense of English. It’s a great thing to keep in your back pocket if you feel like you might ever need it.

For starters, there are a few things about English that actually make it kind of easy. Take tone, for example: unlike Cantonese, the meaning of words in English don’t change based on how you say them.

English also doesn’t concern itself with whether or not “they” is male or female, unlike Spanish and French.

As someone who has been trying to learn both for years, I can confirm that this can be mighty confusing.

And unlike Arabic, English doesn’t have a separate tense for speaking to two people at the same time.

While the tone of this post is harsh, the person manages to get their point across: English is just as tricky as any other language, but possibly not any more so.

Of course, people had a lot to say about all of this. Mostly, they were surprised that the original poster didn’t really explain just how confusing some languages can be.

They also shared more details about other languages not mentioned.

And, of course, the word y’all somehow made it into the conversation.

What do you think of this person’s thoughts? Have you ever tried to learn another language?

Let us know how it went in the comments!

Read About the Time Dozens of Giant Animatronic Dinosaurs, Fossils, and More Were Auctioned Online

If you’ve ever wanted a yard full of massive animatronic dinosaurs, your prayers may have been answered.

Jeremy Dodd, who owns Able Auctions in British Columbia, sold dozens of animatronic dinosaurs in August.

The facility where the giant dinos are being held is having quite a bit of fun with their guests.

As it’s able to run eight or nine of the creatures at once, it’s not hard to stumble upon a whole host of blinking eyelids, nodding heads, and mouths that open and close.

You usually see these kinds of dinosaurs at museums, like London’s Natural History Museum or the Smithsonian National Zoo, but Jeremy says that this group of dinosaurs were “part of a local company here that toured the world doing dinosaur exhibits.”

Sadly, the company went bankrupt in May of this year, and may have needed to get rid of the dinosaurs to make money.

Jeremy also notes that all of the dinosaurs work, and Atlas Obscura describes them as being the real deal:

The dinosaurs have rubbery exteriors stretched over a steel-frame skeleton.

Instead of bellies full of chewed-up plants or smaller, unfortunate prehistoric creatures, these behemoths are full of foam, plus rumbling motors and gears.

They plug into controllers, through which a human handler can dictate how often a particular dino jerks to action, or, say, how far its tail should wag.

The dinosaurs can be sold together or individually, which is certainly a delightful bit of information. After all, who doesn’t want to welcome this guy into their home?

Or perhaps this dino?

Who I’m sure is just a total sweetheart once you get to know him?

If you’re into accuracy, this dino even comes with feathers!

And anyone who is having trouble imagining exactly what an animatronic dinosaur would look like in their yard will surely be satisfied with this photo of a dino in its “natural” habitat:

Look how cute these two are together!

It would probably be cruel to separate them.

They’ve also got fake fossils you can unearth…

Fake fossils in rocks…

And whatever this is!

Would you buy a giant animatronic dinosaur or two?

Let us know what you would do it in the comments!

An Ex-Advisor Stole a Student’s Work, Claimed It as Theirs, and Got Caught

Getting through a college program is no easy feat.

One person shared a student’s worst nightmare: their ex-advisor stole their graduate work, plagiarized it, and then tried to pass it off as their own.

It’s really troubling to think that this happened. What makes it worse is that it took four years for the truth to come out.

The person starts out by noting that their advisor is well-known in her field.

They had been working together for years, and the person had no reason to believe that Janet wouldn’t continue to be a great advisor.

The person says that they hit a point where they were ready to move beyond the work that had been done with Janet, and ended up pursuing a Ph.D. in a different country.

Janet encouraged this, and everything seemed fine… until one day the former student stumbled upon a paper that felt really familiar.

They quickly realized that the author of the paper was none other than Janet.

The person also noticed that all of their original work was in the research… but none of it was cited or credited appropriately.

So they contacted Janet, hoping to figure out what exactly was going on.

Janet chose to remain silent.

After taking this up with the institution that funded the research, the ball really started rolling.

It all ended up working out, and in the end, Janet lost her job.

Can you believe the advisor had the gall to flat-out steal from her former student? Luckily, this story has a solid ending.

Plenty of people wanted to share their thoughts on what happened here. Lot of people immediately dispelled the idea that the person’s reaction was petty.

Another person said that this behavior isn’t exactly uncommon.

Another person pointed out that the advisor definitely should have thought twice.

What did you think of what the advisor did? Let us know in the comments!

Heh.

Honestly, they would make me want to patronize these places more.

Everyone has their “thing,” and in the world today, finding a way to stand out definitely isn’t easy. And while some people choose to do that by being the very best at their chosen hobby or profession, others like this guy who is a Photoshop master, decide to go a bit of a different way.

Hilarious Photoshops That Are the Most Literal Things We’ve Seen Lately

Photoshop is addictive, to think we could create the perfect image, could scrub anything out or in that would make us or the image as a whole look better.

We should have learned by now, though, that any such requests given to Photoshop master Jamie Fridman would be met with extremely literal responses – they’re hilarious, and honestly, full of social commentary if you want to look below the surface!

13. Why are these creepy?

Nothing Jamie could do about that, I suppose.

12. That is one cute dog.

As long as we get to keep him in, I’m good.

11. Painfully accurate.

At least it was just in the imagination!

10. She should have defined “cool.”

Although he admittedly took it to extremes.

9. Stretching the interpretation of the term “people.”

It’s also funny, so gold star.

4. Well that was simple.

I want to see their reactions. Lol.

3. It looks like something out of a Tim Burton movie.

I mean that in a good way, obviously.

2. Notoriety comes at a price, you know.

But he probably meant VISITING a museum I guess.

1. Both of these pictures are downright hilarious.

I can’t decide which I like the best.

These actually made me think a little bit. How about you?

Which of them hit you just right? Tell us in the comments!
