Food Poisoning May Not Be Because of the Last Thing You Ate

There are two different kinds of food-borne intestinal distress, the first of which sets in a few hours after a meal and may leave you nauseous (or even running for the bathroom). This one, believe it or not, is actually the milder case, and your body typically finds relief after evacuating the offending meal.

The other sort of food poisoning – what I like to refer to as “real” food poisoning – doesn’t arrive until between 12-24 hours (at the earliest) after the bad food passed your lips, and it could leave you praying for death on your bathroom floor for up to 24 hours after that.

Yeah. Did it once, do not ever wish to repeat.

The CDC lists four common culprits of food-borne illness: norovirus, Salmonella enterica, Clostridium perfringens, and Campylobacter jejuni. The time from ingestion to symptoms varies from (at least) 6 hours with Salmonella to up to 2 days with Campylobacter.

So, even if your last meal is the one coming up (and the one your mind will associate with the terribleness for years to come), it’s probably not the culprit in the worst cases of food-borne nastiness.

Sadly, there’s nothing much to do besides cry, call your mom, and camp out in the bathroom until its over. You should try to keep down liquids (ha!) and call a doctor if you haven’t been able to for over 24 hours.

There’s not a whole lot you can do to prevent nasty microbes from arriving with your dinner in a restaurant (or a hotdog at a ballpark, in my case), but at home, make sure to wash your hands and prep surfaces regularly, avoid contamination between raw and cooked foods, cook to recommended internal temperatures, and yeah, did I mention washing your hands?

#MaxFact: After four outbreaks in less than two years where likely contaminated romaine lettuce contained deadly E. coli O157: H7, the Food and Drug Administration is turning to microbial testing for clues for the next year to try to figure out what’s happening. ⠀ .⠀ The FDA reports it is now “conducting a small, focused assignment to collect samples of the raw agricultural commodity (RAC) romaine lettuce to test for salmonella app and pathogenic Escherichia coli…” ⠀ .⠀ The year-long testing program will run through November 2020. Testing for Shiga Toxin-producing E. coli or STECS includes the microbial hazards associated with romaine lettuce consumption. The FDA will collect raw lettuce that is trimmed or washed in its natural form before processing. ⠀ .⠀ The four E. coli outbreaks infected a total of 320 people and were notable for their high hospitalization rates. Five outbreak patients died. [source: freshplaza.com]

Take extra care with foods like shellfish, red meat, poultry, eggs, and fresh fruits and vegetables, as these are at the highest risk for carrying pathogens.

Wash your lettuce and berries, people. Trust me (and the CDC) on this one.

This Fast Food Restaurant Has Great Customer Service to Go with Its Legendary Fried Chicken

Fast food is all about consistency in taste, value, and customer service. And when it comes to the latter, one fast-food titan stands above the rest: Chick-fil-A.

No matter how long the drive thru line extends or how jammed the lobby gets with hungry kids, Chick-fil-A employees treat customers with tremendous respect and hospitality. And that’s not just me talking out of loyalty to their tenders.

According to the America’s Best Customer Service 2020 report by Newsweek and Statista, Chick-fil-A has the best fast-food customer service in America. They took home the title by edging out In-N-Out Burger and Whataburger.

The report was based on survey results from more than 20,000 U.S. customers that measured categories including range of services, accessibility, quality of communication and professional competence.

For anyone who has dined at Chick-fil-A, the first-place finish should come as no surprise. In fact, the restaurant finished fifth overall in the survey, with a score of 9.08. Considering the survey spanned more than 160 different categories of business, this was a major feather in the cap for one of the most recognizable brands in its industry.

Disney Cruise Line, Neiman Marcus, The Ritz-Carlton and Edward Jones were the only companies who outperformed Chick-fil-A in the scoresheet. Not bad for a place that’s synonymous with clever commercials featuring cows encouraging us to “Eat More Chickin.”

Providing excellent customer service is one of the main reasons the restaurant has become such a significant player in the fast-food game. Of course, it all starts from the top down. Founder Samuel Truett Cathy puts it best, stating, “We should be about more than just selling chicken. We should be a part of our customers’ lives and the communities in which we serve.”

Though Cathy passed away in 2014, it’s safe to say his legacy and vision lives on.

These Foods Do Not Belong in Your Pantry

Open your pantry doors and you might just realize you have a storage problem.

Stuffed side by side you can often find boxes, jars, cans and everything in between. It’s a mess!

But that’s not what we’re talking about. While your pantry may or may not have sufficient space to store your favorite snacks and cooking staples, that doesn’t mean every item belongs on those shelves.

Here are five foods that should not be stored in your pantry, at least not if you want to maximize their flavor and longevity.

Bananas

There’s a major difference between a banana that’s perfectly ripe and one that will squish at the slightest touch. Once your bananas are ready to eat, whatever that means to you, store them in the fridge. Leaving them in the dark in your pantry is a recipe for disaster (or perhaps banana bread).

Whole-Grain Flour

When it comes to whole-grain flour, it deserves different treatment than its all-purpose cousin. This healthier alternative contains bran and wheat germ, and their oils can turn sour rather quickly. The secret to preserving its freshness is to store it in the freezer.

Fresh Herbs

Incorporating fresh herbs in your cooking can add not only flavor but also health benefits. But while basil is best stored in your pantry, other greens such as rosemary and thyme need to rent room in your refrigerator. Even softer herbs used for garnishes and extra depth, such as dill and parsley, should be stored in plastic bags in the fridge rather than your pantry.

Opened Red Wine

A glass of red wine after a long week (or day) of work can relax your weary mind and body. But if you don’t manage to finish the bottle in one sitting, the best way to preserve the wine’s flavor is to re-cork it and stick it in the fridge. The cold temperature slows the oxidation process and ensures that your second glass will be just as refreshing as the first (at least, if you get to it quickly enough…wine does spoil).

Tortillas

The next time you buy tortillas for Taco Tuesday, make sure to think ahead about where you’re going to store the leftover wraps. Just like bread, tortillas grow mold rather quickly when left out at room temperature for more than a week. Storing them in the fridge will help ensure your crispy quesadilla satisfies your midnight snack craving.

11 Costco Food Court Scenarios Only a True Fan Understands

Costco has a cult following, and for good reason. It’s a giant warehouse with amazing products at low prices. That is, if you can really use Peter Thomas Roth face cream in bulk.

There’re also cases of organic apples, huge tubs of fresh spinach and 10-pound bags of carrots available for purchase. Make regular, advance meal planning a part of your life and you’ll use it all before it all gets soggy–no problem.

Though maybe you should skip the produce if you’re single and not juicing for every meal. That’s okay, too! There’s always the food court.

In fact, for all you Costco converts, here is a list of 11 food court scenarios only we can look at and say, “Oh…yeah definitely.”

1.  The food court you deserve

No-nonsense and sells everything you need.

10. Berry Sundaes are berry tasty

Yes, there’s even dessert!

11. And for anyone who wants to feel healthy, they’ve got smoothies!

Your calcium and fruit in a delicious shake.

See, Costco isn’t just for bulk shopping. For a few bucks (that you found in a pair of jeans you left on the floor last week), you can have a hot, filling meal or a frosty cold treat. Then, when you’re properly fortified, you’ll have the strength to wander from one end of Costco’s vastness to the other, picking your way through tables of track pants, jackets and pajamas.

So, make sure your membership is current, and head out to your local Costco for lunch or early dinner. While you’re there, pick up a nice rotisserie chicken for later.

You Might Want to Check Your Bottled Water’s Expiration Date Before You Start Drinking

Keeping hydrated is important, but not every bottle of water is safe for drinking. It may sound weird, but just like meat, dairy and many other items you pick up at the grocery store, bottled water has an expiration date.

Let that sink in a moment.

Luckily, unlike those berries that tend to go bad quick, you have a long time to drink your bottled water. In fact, the expiration date on the bottle has nothing to do with the water itself.

Bet you never thought of that one, right?

There’s a good reason for the expiration label: it turns out that the plastics used for both retail bottles and water cooler jugs can become toxic over time.

According to Amy Leigh Mercee, a holistic health expert and author, “[These plastics] will leach into the liquid the bottle once expired or especially when exposed to heat, including sunlight, and hot cars or storage trucks.”

Hint: That probably means it’s time to get rid of the graveyard of half-filled water bottles in your backseat.

Mercee added, “The toxicity contained in the plastic material enters the water. It is disruptive to the endocrine system, causing reproductive symptoms, various cancers, [and] neurological problems, and damaging the immune system.”

She continued, saying that bottled water companies typically use a two-year expiration date, which is the industry standard. However, it is important to keep in mind that the longer a bottle has been in circulation, the more likely the chance it has been exposed to heat.

“Even a brand new plastic bottle that sat in a hot delivery truck for hours or more can already have adverse and toxic compounds present in the water even when first delivered to the grocery store,” Mercee cautioned.

At the end of the day, it’s best to store bottled water in a cool, dark place far from household chemicals or other potential contaminants. Not only will your water last longer and taste better but it will also be safer.

…and that’s the whole point of bottled water.

You Won’t Shed a Tear When Chopping These Special Onions

Chopping onions can really make the waterworks start flowing. It’s so annoying that home cooks and professional chefs alike have tried to scheme ways to overcome the tear-jerking effects of preparing onions for their final resting place.

From soaking your onions in water to sharpening your knife like you’re being sent into battle to practicing proper breathing techniques, it seems everyone has an answer to the crying question. Unfortunately, many tips and tricks simply don’t hold up over time.

But if you want to be rid of oniony tears forever, now you can be. That’s been made possible by Sunions.

I swear I’m not making this up. The Sunion is a cross-breed of two other onions and looks no different than the ones you have used in dishes for years. However, because Sunions do not have lachrymatory-factor synthase (the chemical that makes your eyes burn), they become milder and sweeter while in storage.

Of course, the hype surrounding a tearless onion seemed too good to be true. Luckily, an editor from Taste of Home tried out Sunions first hand and the results were fascinating.

“I held the chopped onion up to my eye to see if I’d tear up, and nothing,” the editor said.. “They don’t even really have much of a smell. We could definitely taste the onion on our tacos, though, which is what we were hoping for.”

If you’re looking to spice up your cooking without the customary crying, retailers like Walmart, Costco and Kroger all carry Sunions. The next time you go on a grocery run, skip the tissues and simply stick with Sunions.

Dessert for Breakfast Is on the Menu with Cinnamon Toast Crunch Ice Cream

Cereal lovers can celebrate a new way to chow down on Cinnamon Toast Crunch. And yes, you’ll still need a bowl and spoon.

Or a cone.

Cinnamon Toast Crunch-flavored ice cream is officially a dream come true. This sugary cereal-inspired confection is sure to satisfy your sweet tooth and will be available in stores soon.

The news broke on Instagram in late January of the upcoming release.

For flavor enthusiasts, the ice cream will feature a cinnamon-flavored base, a cinnamon graham swirl and pieces of the iconic cereal. Honestly, my mouth is watering just writing this.

As an admitted ice cream addict, the harmonious marriage of cereal and my favorite dessert treat is almost too good to be true. After all, I’m proud to say I’m one of the thousands of people whose favorite part of eating cereal was drinking the cereal-infused milk that remained.

Now I will be able enjoy that same signature flavor of Cinnamon Toast Crunch in a cold, frozen form? Whatever food engineer concocted this idea deserves a round of applause, and a free lifetime supply of his or her creation.

As for those who think pints are entirely too small, good news is that the flavor will be available in both 14-ounce and 48-ounce containers. According to Delish, Nestle confirmed that their newest ice cream offering will be available in major retailers in just a few months.

Oh, and the good news doesn’t stop there.

The company confirmed that the Cinnamon Toast Crunch flavor will be a light ice cream. Suddenly my future breakfast sounds a lot healthier.

I’ll have my bowl and cone(s) ready for scooping.

Chrissy Teigen Revealed Her ‘Night Eggs’ Habit and It’s a Very Strange Insomnia Hack

Chrissy Teigen is in the spotlight for a lot of things: being a model, writing best-selling cookbooks, and publicly roasting her husband John Legend. And now, she is also famous for eating eggs in the middle of the night.

Chrissy revealed her “night eggs” habit on Twitter recently, and it drew a lot of attention because, hello — WTF are night eggs? She just casually dropped them into a tweet about Reddit.

Of course, people had questions. So many questions. In a follow-up tweet, Chrissy answered some of them.

“I can’t sleep without being overly full,” she explained. “I take two hard boiled eggs to bed every night and eat them when I randomly wake up. It used to be beef jerky but I’d wake up too puffy.”

But this answer led to, um, more questions. Where does she keep the eggs? Isn’t it annoying to peel them half-asleep? What if she doesn’t wake up to eat them?

But she always does, apparently. Chrissy added that she wakes up for at least 30 minutes at least four times a night. Phew!

This isn’t the first time Chrissy has mentioned her night eggs. In December, she posted photos of them in bed with her. As you can see, the eggs are already peeled, so that answers one question at least.

Look, the idea of a midnight snack is obviously not new, nor are the struggles of insomnia. Chrissy’s mentions filled with people naming the snacks they like to eat when they wake up: apples, cheese and pistachios. But eggs?

EGGS?!

Apparently, there is some scientific justification for doing this. A naturopathic doctor told Well + Good that “a little bit of protein at night before you got to sleep — maybe about 6 grams of protein, which is the equivalent of an egg — it gives you a nice blood-sugar balance through most of the night.”

That’s just one doctor, but hey. If it works for Chrissy…
