Technology is moving so fast that it’s pretty hard to keep up.

It seems like every week we see new products that are sleeker, faster, smaller, and more efficient.

What’s next? Only time will tell…

But one thing is for sure: based on these photos, it seems like we’re already living in the future. Let’s take a look.

Students Clean Their Own Classrooms and Toilets in Japan

It’s actually common for Japanese people to take responsibility for cleaning public spaces they utilize.

After a recent win over the Colombian football team during the World Cup, the fans naturally wanted to celebrate. But not until they all pitched in to clean the stadium.

This Japanese drive to maintain cleanliness is a concept introduced during their early school years. According to Bright Vibes, the o-soji (cleaning), as it is called, is tradition in Japanese schools.

【News: Japanese-Style Education “Special Activities” /Tokubetsukatsudo(Tokkatsu) Spreads to Egyptian Elementary…

Posted by JICA – Japan International Cooperation Agency on Tuesday, January 10, 2017

Making the children clean their schoolrooms and restrooms has nothing to do with lack of manpower. Even though people – called yomushuji, often shortened to shuji – are hired for non-teaching roles like cleaning and maintaining school grounds, children are still taught to clean. The idea is to instill the values of discipline, responsibility and the joint care of spaces into children. It’s a value they go on to hold throughout their lives.

Starting each day (except Wednesdays and Saturdays) after lunch, the students clean for approximately 20 minutes. They start with their own classrooms, then rotate as groups to clean other spaces like the playground, library and common areas. Then, they get recess.

The school gets a longer cleaning on the last day of each semester. The children also get an o-soji song or something else to get them pumped while they clean. Older kids also help teach the little ones what to do, which bonds the kids like siblings.

Once they reach the third grade, children start participating in chiiki seiso – a full neighborhood clean-up.

If you ask me, this Japanese tradition is onto something. If everyone was taught to clean up after themselves starting in early childhood, the world would be a much cleaner place.

What do you think about the practice? Let us know in the comments.

A Dog Owner Built a “Stick Library” for the Pups at the Local Park

You’ve probably seen “Little Free Libraries” that are popping up in towns all over the world. You just need a box sturdy enough to protect books from the elements, a sign, a collection cup for donations, and of course, some books.

People are free to check them out, return them, donate their own, etc. It’s an awesome idea to bring books into the world.

Now one dog owner has taken that concept and applied it to man’s best friend, in the form of a stick library at the local dog park.

Allie loved the stick library at Kaiapoi dog park #sticklibrary

A post shared by Allie (@alliemylabrador) on

Why sticks? Well, they make dogs happy, of course – big dogs, little dogs, in-between dogs, they all love to carry, chase, and chew on a bit of wood when they get the chance.

59-year-old dog owner Andrew Taylor got the idea for a stick library because his dog, Bella, really loves sticks. Plus, they’re great toys for her because she always ripped anything less sturdy to shreds.

The New Zealander took sticks he’d amassed while trimming trees at home, sanded them until they were smooth and clean (saving the dogs’ teeth and gums!) and then crafted a wooden box to store the sticks in at the park.

This morning as I took Danu for a big yomp to the ocean. Look what we found!!! . . Some gorgeous, creative, quirky person had made a fabulous “stick library” for the doggos and left it on the side of the trail. . . Creativity comes in many forms and I love it when people share what they create. After all in my neighbourhood there are lots of little “Take a book, leave a book” library’s. So now there’s “Take a stick, leave a stick” library for doggos! And the dogs knew exactly what to do! Thank you to this creative being. . . Love it! . . . #creativity #creativityfound #showupandshine #sticklibrary #dallasroadbeach #dogsofinstagram #mademesmile #mademesmiletoday #createyourlife #shareyourlight #shareyourgifts #happydogs #islanddogs #thankyou #quirkyart #quirky #sticks

On the top he engraved “Stick Library” and a few words encouraging people to return the sticks once their dogs were finished.

Taylor’s daughter invited a bunch of dog owners to the park to give the new box a try, and around 50 people and their pooches showed up to play.

Everyone loved the box and couldn’t believe no one had ever considered the simple idea before then – after all, we’ve all going looking for that “good stick” to toss to our dog, only to come up empty.

I think this could definitely catch on at dog parks around the world, don’t you?

Research Shows That Underwater Speakers Can Help Revive Dying Coral Reefs

Dying coral reefs have been a problem for years now, and scientists have struggled to figure out ways to revive struggling reef ecosystems. But a recent study published in the journal Nature Communications has given scientists (and everyone, really) newfound hope about this critically important issue.

The study found that playing sounds on underwater speakers could entice fish to come to dying reefs. The sounds being played on these speakers aren’t pop music, to be clear. Rather, they mimic the sounds of a healthy reef. Researchers found that when a loudspeaker played the sounds of a healthy reef, double the number of fish came by, and 50% more fish species visited compared to dead coral reef areas without any artificial sounds.

The experiment lasted 40 days, and the species of fish that flocked to the coral with the loudspeakers were very diverse. This is valuable because fish clean reefs of choking algae and help make space for new coral to grow. While this certainly isn’t the only ingredient in reviving dying coral reefs, it definitely can help reefs begin to recover. And diverse fish species bring different functions to coral reefs, which further helps recovery.

Andy Radford, a co-author of the study, said, “If combined with habitat restoration and other conservation measures, rebuilding fish communities in this manner might accelerate ecosystem recovery.”

Coral Reef, Florida

There are many factors that cause a cause reef to suffer or die. In the Florida Keys, sewage and fertilizer runoff has led to nitrogen enrichment in areas with coral reefs, killing corals. Rising ocean temperatures kill coral as well – around 50% of Australia’s famous Great Barrier Reef has been bleached to death because of high oceanic temperature caused by climate change. Though, on a positive note, it looks like some corals are becoming more resistant to increasing temperatures in the water.

Let’s hope that research and ACTION continues to develop for this very important cause. We only have one Earth, let’s take care of it!

This ‘Star Wars’-Themed Airbnb Is Seriously Impressive

One of the best things about Airbnb is that you can rent all kinds of different places. Big houses, small apartments, tiny guest houses – pretty much anything is possible.

And that’s certainly the case with this one-of-a-kind Airbnb rental recently made available in Florida, near Walt Disney World’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. The home is known as ‘Twelve Parsecs,’ and it is Star Wars-themed.

The house is HUGE. It has 9 bedrooms, 17 beds, 5 bathrooms, so if you reserve this place you can have a big old nerd fest…I mean party.

A ‘Jesus Heist’ Autocorrect Fail Inspired Twitter Users to Develop Film Ideas

We all know about the common autocorrects that drive us insane on our smartphones. “Ducking” instead of, well, you know. “Judy” when you’re trying to type “Just.” The list goes on and on…

Well, in case you haven’t noticed lately, autocorrect has changed “Jesus Christ” to…wait for it…”Jesus Heist.” Seriously. A guy named Chris Hewitt pointed out how this new development totally sounds like a cool action movie.

Hewitt’s tweet got the ball rolling and the Twitter collaboration began!

A very good point…who could fill those shoes on the big screen? But Hewitt fired back with his own plot twist.

And then some awesome and creative possible titles for this excellent film came rolling in.

This title is pretty solid.

And here’s an excellent tagline that would bring folks to the theaters in droves.

I can picture this scene in my head.

15 People Share Their Small Town’s Most Recent Scandals

I lived in a small town until I was 10 years old when my family moved away, and I remember that everyone there seemed to know everyone else’s business.

Because that’s how it works in small towns. A lot of gossip, a lot of drama – and when a scandal hits, everyone knows about it.

Here are the latest small town scandals according to AskReddit users.

1. A criminal from the big city.

“A few days ago, Amber Alert sent out an emergency message about a fellow in a green car who had stabbed his girlfriend and stolen their baby out of San Jose, which is 3 hours north of us. Lo and behold, the guy was caught right at our own downtown gas station when the kidnapper accidently locked the baby and his keys in his car, which drew attention to him.

A good samaritan from an entirely different town, (a tourist), put the puzzle together, and put the guy in a headlock until the authorities arrived.”

2. On the loose.

“My small town includes a pretty large zoo and a tapir has recently escaped and is still at large.”

3. Holy sh*t.

“The school gym teacher was fired after being caught masturbating in the equipment room (he was caught by two students). A few days later he killed himself. Everyone is a bit shaken up about it.”

4. He seems really smart.

“A substitute teacher at the high school started smoking a joint in class in front of students.”

5. An epidemic.

“Terrible heroin epidemic. Brother’s best friend who was fairly close to our family overdosed a few days ago. My brother only has maybe 2 childhood friends left because of this.”

6. Damn kids…

“We don’t know who but someone has been going around egging random cars and throwing full water bottles at people’s windshields…”

7. That’s pretty bad.

“Our newly elected mayor (who is a school teacher as well) caused a head-on car crash injuring 2 small children in the other car. She was found to be drunk and it was 330 pm on a weekday. The kicker: she wasn’t charged with a crime (as of yet) but she did resign after “considerable thought.””

8. Meth lab?

“A vacant house exploded and no one is sure what caused it.”

9. Naked bandits.

“My grandparents small town has had a recent outbreak of teenagers riding horses through the middle of downtown, while wearing nothing but facemasks. It has happened a total of three times now, always different kids, always different horses.”

10. This is amazing.

“I left my small town years ago but I was home over thanksgiving and got an earful.

The local grocery store was renovated/expanded after 30 years and now “everything’s moved and you can’t find nothing”.

I was home for four days and literally every new social interaction with people in town involved the goddam grocery store and how awful it is now.

Spoiler: it actually looks quite nice and they hang signs over the aisles telling you where things are. You know, like a grocery store.”

11. Banned!

“The guy thats been trolling our town’s community Facebook page finally got banned. LOL.”

12. Oh My God.

“Not really recent, but the owner of the petting zoo turned out to be a serial murderer and buried 2 corpses under the goat enclosure. A lot of kids volunteer there and walked over them unknowingly. He murdered the couple, and used their house, car and money.”

13. Always the same.

“The scandal in my town is always the same… Someone is sleeping with someone else’s husband… Or the 50 year old dating the 18 year old…”

14. Kissin’ cousins.

“Two cousins just got married. The families all knew when they started dating and didn’t say a word until they were in a committed relationship. They went ahead with it. Wasn’t even very distant.”

15. Not a big fan.

“A married resource officer (aka cop that’s at the school all day) messed around with a married teacher. Both had kids, the teacher was fired, and the cop was pulled off of that duty. Nothing that interesting in its own, but it’s been the talk of the town for about a month.

This is the same town where everyone stares at you if they don’t recognize you. Dealt with that the first 2-3 years I lived here, just constant fucking staredowns lol. Population is less than 700.

I hate small towns.”
