14 Times Hollywood Age Gaps Were Very Surprising

In real life, people can be with whoever the heck they want – young-young, young-old, it doesn’t matter. In Hollywood, though, age gaps get a little more political. And while Hollywood is notorious for pairing older actors with younger actresses as love interests, some of these movie age gaps – not all of which are even romantic – are really pretty mind-blowing.

And not really in a good way, so be warned.

14. In The Graduate, Dustin Hoffman was 30 years old, playing 21, and being seduced by the seemingly much older Anne Bancroft, who was only 36 irl.

Mrs. Robinson’s daughter, played by Katharine Ross, was 27 – only 9 years younger than Bancroft.

13. In Singin’ in the Rain, Debbie Reynolds was cast when she was 19 years old, while love interest Gene Kelly was 40.

And yeah, she had to act like she wanted to make out with him.

12. In The Manchurian Candidate, Angela Lansbury played the onscreen mom of Laurence Harvey, who was only three years younger.

If that’s not a comment on women’s employability in Hollywood, I don’t know what is.

11. In Carrie, Sissy Spacek was 26 when she played a 16-year-old.

The woman who played the gym teacher, Betty Buckley, was only 28.

10. In Magic in the Moonlight, there was a 28-year age gap between onscreen lovers Emma Stone and Colin Firth.

Ho-hum, just another sexist day in Hollywood.

9. In Love Actually, Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Keira Knightley were only five years apart.

He played a 10-year-old, and she played a married woman. Though this isn’t entirely unrealistic, it’s still crazy to think about.

8. In Forrest Gump, Sally Field and Tom Hanks played mother and son.

Six years earlier they played love interests in Punchline. FYI, she’s 10 years older than him in real life.

7. In Alexander, Angelina Jolie played Colin Farrell’s mother.

He was 28, she was 29.

6. In The Hobbit series, Orlando Bloom was actually older than the actor who played his father.

Lee Pace is two years his junior. Though they were playing elves, who, admittedly, age strangely.

5. In Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Dick Van Dyke was six months older than Lionel Jeffries, who played his father.

I mean, to be fair, Dick Van Dyke was an alien who never really aged.

4. In the Harry Potter series, Shirley Henderson was 35 years old when she started playing Moaning Myrtle.

Myrtle was a 14-year-old ghost.

3. In Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Cher played Meryl Streep’s mom.

Meryl is younger, but only by 3 years.

2. In White Christmas, Rosemary Clooney was 26 by the time the movie premiered, while Bing Crosby was 51 – nearly twice her age.

No wonder she wasn’t really into it, blue eyes or not.

1. In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Sean Connery played Harrison Ford’s father.

There is only a 12-year age gap between the actors.

I really had no idea how old some of these actors are, so there’s that. And wow do I need some better anti-aging products.

Did these surprise you? Are you more savvy than me? Tell us in the comments!

A Melting Glacier Revealed 28 New Virus Groups and Scientists are Worried

There are a whole lot of reasons to lament the demise of glaciers around the world – for one, they are the visual proof that the earth is warming, no matter what the weather outside your window or the politicians in their offices want to claim.

For another, many of them have been around for millennia, and as they melt, things are thawing out of them that modern human beings have never encountered.

In 2015, researchers from China and the United States drilled a 164-foot hole into a Tibetan glacier, gathering 2 ice core samples to study in a lab. The 15,000-year-old glacier is melting, and the scientists have so far found 33 virus groups in their core sample.

28 of them are completely new to science.

These scientists and researchers are not alone; their peers around the world are desperately trying to identify potential microbial threats in the melting ice before they escape and put us on the spot.

The meltwater from glaciers and ice caps could release these potentially harmful pathogens into streams, rivers, and pretty much any other type of waterway…and once a previously unknown microbe finds its way into human beings, there’s no telling what might happen.

The permafrost around the world is melting, too, and presents similar microbial challenges. It’s also releasing an alarming amount of methane gas and carbon dioxide – it is estimated to hold twice as much carbon as currently resides in our atmosphere.

For 141 years since its first ascent, mountaineers from around the world traveled to climb la Meije in the Massif des Ecrins of France. Meanwhile, the permafrost that held its stones together was melting. On August 7, 2018, rockfall destroyed much of the normal route. In this On Belay story from Alpinist 68—which is now available on newsstands and in our online store—two locally based guides—Benjamin Ribeyre and Erin Smart—recount a search for a new way up the peak amid the uncertainties of the planet’s future. . Researchers have pulled samples of smallpox, Spanish flu, bubonic plague, and even anthrax from thawing permafrost, along with pollutants like mercury, all previously trapped inside permanently frozen ground.

There are important buildings in jeopardy, too, as thawing ground begins to result in more slumping or sagging of previously hardened earth. In Sweden, for example, there is a nuclear waste containment facility that could be in danger, and in Norway, the world’s global seed vault, built to safeguard seeds against exactly this kind of environmental impact, could itself be threatened.

Humans are very good at self sabotaging ourselves, controlling and manipulating others, colonizing and dominating over other live and sentient beings. All these behaviours are driven by fear, anger, greed, hunger for power, status and control. ?? These Celebrities Were All Cut out of Famous Films

When actors and actresses reach a certain level of fame, you might think they can demand roles and screen time – but it turns out that almost everyone has to work for their time in front of the camera, not matter how famous.

Just like the rest of us work for a living.

How do we know? Well, you’ll probably be surprised by these 13 celebs who thought they were in a movie, only to find out later that their part had ended up on the cutting room floor.

13. You might have thought Daisy Ridley was in Inbetweeners 2, but her part was chopped.

A post shared by Inbetweeners 2 Movie (@inbetweeners2) on

It wasn’t her fault; her scene needed to be re-shot, but she couldn’t make it because she was already on set working on Star Wars.

12. Paul Rudd played one of Kristen Wiigs’ bad dates in Bridesmaids.

They said Paul was very funny, but the movie was long and we didn’t really need a third man in Annie’s life. See the cut performance here.

11. Angela Bassett shot several scenes as a villain in Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

Director Doug Liman told Entertainment Weekly that the character was cut when he rewrote the film’s ending.

10. Matt Damon reprised his role of Linus Caldwell (Ocean’s 11) for Ocean’s 8, but didn’t appear in the final film.

The appearance was cut for plot reasons, but also because of a petition that asked for his removal after his “thoughtless and sexist comments about Harvey Weinstein.”

9. Jena Malone was cut out of Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

She played Jenet Klyburn, a weapons expert and ballistics specialist at S.T.A.R. Labs who helps Lois Lane.

8. Leonardo DiCaprio was originally in the 1992 thriller Poison Ivy.

He recently told Marc Maron on this WTF podcast that he had a small role with a few lines, but he couldn’t get it right and the entire bit ended up cut from the film.

7. Princes Harry and William shot cameos as stormtroopers in The Last Jedi, but had to be cut out.

They were too tall, guys. That’s it.

6. Harrison Ford originally made a cameo in E.T.

His then-wife Melissa Mathison wrote the movie, and Steven Spielberg directed, but Ford’s role as the uptight principal who reads Elliott the riot act didn’t add enough substance to make the final cut.

5. Tim Roth was axed from the final version of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Before you say “you don’t understand it, it’s a @tarantinoxx film!” I will say…. “it still sucked”, because I loved Pulp Fiction. Also…why you gotta do Bruce lee like that, man was a King-fu killer. Though he delivered memorable performances in a number of Tarantino films, his role as a British butler didn’t make the final cut this time.

4. Ellen Pompeo filmed a key role in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind – but you never saw her.

She played Jim Carrey’s ex-girlfriend Naomi. The director actually filmed a video essay that explains why he decided not to use any of her scenes.

3. Eric Stoltz filmed the role of Marty McFly for 5 weeks before being replaced by Michael J. Fox.

Director Robert Zemeckis claimed most of the problem was that Eric wasn’t delivering on the script’s humor.

2. Sterling K. Brown’s entire character was cut from Split.

Director M. Night decided that the professor/neighbor character took the film away from its main focus for too long – it’s one of the deleted scenes, though!

1. Robert Pattinson played Reese Witherspoon’s son in Vanity Fair.

Given that they’re only 9 years apart in age, casting them as love interests in Water for Elephants made more sense.

I’m totally surprised by some of these, are you?

An Astronaut Posted Pictures of Earth and Flat-Earthers Complained

The Earth is round – we’ve known this for many hundreds of years. It wasn’t particularly controversial for much of that time, but for some reason there has recently sprung up a small contingent of people that insists, incorrectly, that the world is flat.

Jessica Mier is a NASA astronaut who witnessed the beauty of looking at Earth from a distance. She shared a few photos online with the world so the rest of us could appreciate our home.

There are always people who want to diminish something beautiful and positive. After Mier uploaded these photos, flat-earthers showed their disdain.

Several people accused NASA (and Mier) of using a fisheye lens to take photos of our “flat” Earth. You’re probably familiar with this, but a fisheye lens can make objects look more curved and wider. This effect can make flat objects look more spherical.

Others quickly shut down these flat earth theories.

Well, at least some of these good people tried to knock some sense into flat-earthers.

Mier currently resides in the International Space Station and is an accomplished physiologist from Texas. It’s clear that she loves her job, and she frequently posts about what she sees from space, the history of astronomy, and her workplace adventures.

She even delivers lectures from space!

Regardless of what a few flat-earthers might say, Mier is clearly going to continue killing it at NASA.

What did you think of these pictures and the flat-earthers’ responses? If you have anything to say about these photographs or the flat-earthers who might try to discredit them, know what we’ll totally respect your comments…

Parsley Joins the List of Herbs You Should Not Stick in Your Vagina

You might think it would be common sense that food items don’t belong anyplace inside you other than your stomach. You’d think that, but you would sadly be wrong.

Last year, doctors had to put out a warning that cucumbers shouldn’t go inside your vagina, and this year, they’re having to do the same with parsley – all thanks to Marie Claire (an actual real media publication), which published an article about the herb being useful to bring on your period.

View this post on Instagram

This may look like a parsnip but it’s not a parsnip. It’s an old fashioned allotment veg known as parsley. It’s a great winter option as it’s completely hardly. The roots can be roasted or thrown in a casserole and the tops give you parsley (as in the herb) all year round ??? Harvested today, this one’s on the small side but if left they can get huge xx . . #parsley #winterveg #winterveggies #rootvegetables #vegetarian #pescatarian #vegan #plantbased #allotment #allotmentlove #allotmentlife #allotmentgarden #countryliving #growyourownfood #eatwhatyougrow #mykitchengarden #myediblegarden #organic #urbanorganicgardener #kelloggarden #urbangarden #urbangardener #raisedbedgarden #growninsussex #growveggies #growyourownveggies #lovegardening #gardenlove #outdoorliving

A post shared by Black Shed Country Living ? ? (@blackshedcountryliving) on

According to the article:

“Parsley can help to soften the cervix and level out hormonal imbalances that could be delaying your cycle, helping your period come faster. …If you’re struggling to find a dish based on parsley, don’t panic – the most effective forms are said to be parsley tea and parsley vaginal inserts.”

Yes, you read that right.

The internet has many suggestions on using parsley to induce a miscarriage herbally, including this horrifying tidbit:

“Fresh parsley (preferably organic…I don’t want pesticides in my vagina, so I go organic). Insert a fresh sprig of parsley as far as possible into the vagina (parsley induces contractions, yum). Change every 12 hours. When soft, it may be difficult to remove, but this is not dangerous.”

In fact, that is so dangerous.

Putting anything that gathers bacteria into your nethers presents a risk of infection, which can have life-threatening consequences.

“There is no evidence of any benefit to a woman of doing this, and clear risk of significant harm as deaths have been reported. I would urge women not to insert anything unless they have taken proper medical advice,” Dr. Shazia Malk told The Independent.

One woman who died after trying to induce a miscarriage with parsley lived in Argentina, where abortion is illegal. She was 34, and even though surgeons removed her uterus in an attempt to stop the spreading infection, she still passed.

Also? Dr. Jennifer Gunter told IFLScience that using parsley to bring on a miscarriage “can’t work. To think it could work would reflect a belief in magic.”

As abortion clinics close all over the country, I imagine that we’re only going to see more people looking for ways to take matters into their own hands.

And I don’t see how that’s going to be good for anyone.

Learn About the Molasses Flood That Devastated Boston in 1919

Boston has been home to many historic events, but some overshadow others. And this one perhaps tops the category of weirdest disaster…

On July 15, 1919, Boston was hit with an oft-overlooked event of mass destruction: Molasses flooded the city’s streets and left a path of wreckage in its way.

How, you ask? That’s a great question.

At the time, Boston was home to a company called Purity Distilling Company. The company built a monumental tank in 1915 to process molasses that could later be used to distill alcohol.

Molasses is used for both commercial and potable alcohol (it’s safe as long as it’s done properly), and this was a major source of revenue for Purity Distilling.

The tank had a capacity of 2.5 million gallons, and it was nearly full on the morning of the incident. Witnesses later mentioned that they heard noises comparable to gunshots as the tank’s steel sides and rivets collapsed. Then, suddenly, a 15-foot wave consisting of 26 million pounds of molasses spewed from the side of the tank, slowly causing calamity all over the city.

21 people perished, and approximately 150 people were injured. Emergency responders and police did what they could to help those who were trapped, but molasses is extremely sticky, complicating their efforts.

After helping those affected, the city also had to deal with cleaning up after millions of gallons of molasses.

Later it was revealed that the accident occurred because the company never involved a qualified engineer with the construction of their molasses-holding tank. The state of Massachusetts took action, passing stricter legislation overseeing construction to prevent similar accidents in the future.

Truly, trapped in a wave of molasses is a horrifying way to die…

A Biology Professor Explained Why Defining Sex and Gender Is Actually Not Simple At All

Sex and gender are much more complicated than most people want to believe. And in a world where many, many brave folks are coming forward to say that they don’t want to be categorized with the sex they were born with, or that they don’t identify with a particular gender at all, or a hundred other combinations of some or all of these things, others (who have never questioned what’s on their birth certificate) are confused.

How can this be true, they ask? Gender is the same as sex, isn’t it? And we just are what we are?

Well, here’s the thing – it turns out that chromosomally, cellularly, and biologically, sex and gender are not black and white, not easily defined, and are often fluid. And that’s not even layering a social or psychological aspect on top of it all.

Don’t believe me? Good, you shouldn’t – I’m a writer, not a biologist!

But Rebecca R. Helm is a biologist, and she recently tweeted an insanely insightful thread about how complicated it can be to classifying biological gender.

The best way to combat confusion is with knowledge, so buckle up and let’s go for a little learning ride, shall we?

First, she acknowledges that, on the outside, determining one’s biological sex might seem simple.

But right away, when you learn just a tiny bit more about those X and Y chromosomes, things begin to get more complicated.

And she keeps going, giving us a rundown of things possible and known, and everything out there that’s still a mystery, until – even though I’m educated and consider myself fairly quick on the uptake – I had to admit I was out of my depth.

And what should we do when we’re out of our depth? Defer to the experts, of course, who are comfortable in the deeper water and willing to hold your head above water, too.

So, let’s all take Rebecca R. Helm’s advice and just try to be kind to people.

Biological sex might not be simple to parse or grasp, but you know what is? Listening to what another human being is telling you about the body they inhabit and referring to them how they ask you to.

That’s something we can all start doing right now.

Avoid These Common Packing Mistakes for a Smoother Vacation

The most dreaded part of any vacation is always packing. From trying to stuff that extra pair of shoes in to figuring out a way to fit your laptop and electronics, packing a suitcase can be an exhausting and, frankly, emotionally draining effort.

Staying organized and practical are imperative in the suitcase stuffing packing process. But while we should strive for perfection, here are five common, easily avoidable suitcase packing mistakes that could turn your vacation into a messy disaster.

Overpacking

Having options is one thing, but bringing your entire wardrobe for a three-day cruise is just crazy.

Many people make the mistake of trying to fit too much in their suitcase; they simply get overwhelmed with trying to pick out the appropriate amount of clothing, shoes and accessories to bring on vacation.

The best way to avoid overpacking is to choose a few pairs of pants or shorts that are versatile enough to pair with a few more different tops. You could also opt for a color scheme that you want to coordinate throughout the trip.

Waiting Until The Last Minute

Procrastination doesn’t just apply to homework and cleaning the house.

Vacation-goers often wait till the night before (or sometimes the morning of) to take care of packing. According to Dacy Gillespie, a personal stylist, “You end up packing too many options and don’t have what you need.”

If you have to rush the packing process, you can often overlook important items or pack way too much out of desperation.

Never Fold When You Can Roll

Folding clothes may be the traditional way to do it, but you should really roll with the times.

When it comes to maximizing a small amount of space, rolling your clothes up is the clear-cut choice. Start by folding the article of clothing lengthwise before rolling it tighter than a Chipotle burrito.

Store heavier items along the bottom of your suitcase before layering in lighter items on top. You’ll thank me later…believe me.

Keep Your Toiletries Contained

Nothing is worse than opening up your suitcase only to find your favorite outfit ruined by an exploded shampoo bottle.

Toiletries like lotions, mouthwash, toothpaste and deodorant can easily spill inside your luggage (if you’re flying, remember: the cargo hold is unpressurized) and cause serious damage. Store all non-solids inside plastic bags to ensure your clothes are safe and your vacation will start off on the right foot.

Throwing Out Your Packing List

Organization is the key to packing, and writing everything down on a list can be a helpful strategy.

However, many travelers make the mistake of throwing out their packing list after the final zipper has been pulled. Instead, store your packing list inside your suitcase so that you can verify you have everything when you pack again at the conclusion of your trip.

This Artist Turns Everyday Objects into Stunning 3D Creations

One Japanese artist is taking the idea of “recycling” to a whole new level, and it is awesome.

Haruki, or @02ESyRaez4VhR2l on Twitter, is an expert at the Japanese art of kirigami. Kirigami is similar to its more well-known cousin, origami. But while origami only involves folding paper into creative shapes, kirigami also involves cutting the paper.

Haruki’s kirigami creations are extra-impressive because he uses the packaging from everyday objects, rather than just regular paper.

He used the box from a Starbucks coffee pod to create a dragon. He even turned the Starbucks mermaid from the logo into a dragon-tamer.

And he turned the packaging from five Pringles cans into five men in suits with Pringles logo faces.

Haruki also turned a couple of Cup Noodle cartons into a full astronaut. Look at the amount of detail in this little guy!

Some of his creations are simple, while others are larger and more elaborate. Once, he made a whole miniature village, complete with storefronts and staircases and people. It required 16 boxes of Charlotte’s chocolates.

Haruki uses packaging from Japan, of course. But you could easily (well, maybe not so easily) use his techniques to make your own unique creations using whatever old packaging you have in your own home.

If you want to get in on kirigami, Haruki uploads step-by-step videos to his YouTube channel and Twitter account to help you along.

Time for a new hobby?
