Check out This Museum in Santa Cruz, California, Dedicated to Surfing

Three Hawaiian princes brought the sport of surfing to the U.S. and a Santa Cruz museum tells that story.

The Santa Cruz Surfing Museum is inside a lighthouse on Monterrey Peninsula’s northern tip. Although surfing is an old Polynesian sport, Santa Cruz is known as its entry point into the U.S.

It was in the middle of summer in 1885 when the princes David Kawananakoa, Edward Keliiahonui and Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana’ole of Hawaii, who were attending St. Matthew’s military school in San Mateo, California, decided to get some boards made and drop them in the ocean.

Everyone enjoying their day at the beach became mesmerized by the trio riding the waves on their massive redwood surfboards.

Eventually, the boys left Santa Cruz to return to Hawaii and join the fight for independence. But even after they left, local kids would continue to imitate the way the Hawaiians surfed. Since then, Santa Cruz has always been regarded as the place where California surf culture was born.

Today, in the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum, visitors can see 130 years of surfing chronicled in photographs, surfboards and other mementos.

The lighthouse was a gift in memory of 18-year-old Mark Abbott who drowned in a body surfing accident in 1965. His parents used his life insurance policy to erect the lighthouse in his honor because he loved the ones that dotted the Oregon coast.

The museum was opened inside the lighthouse in 1986 by the city. Surfing is a beloved pastime for many living there and was one of Mark’s favorite activities. From the lighthouse, which sits directly on the ocean, surfing fans can watch perfect 10s and remember the Hawaiian royalty that brought the sport of surfing to the U.S.

A Miner in Russia’s Arctic Circle Takes Beautiful Photos of Foxes During Breaks From Work

In the north-eastern Chukotka region of Russia’s Arctic, one photographer finds the animals living there and captures them with his camera on his breaks from mining.

Posted by Kislov Ivan on Friday, May 11, 2018

The environment is bleak, and sparsely populated with ethnic Russians, Chukchis, and other indigenous peoples.

There are virtually no roads and people here survive mostly by hunting reindeer.

But wildlife thrives and Ivan Kislov has no problems finding it for his fantastic photos.

Posted by Kislov Ivan on Monday, September 18, 2017

Kislov lives in the north-eastern port city of Magadan and works as a mining engineer in Chukotka.

Posted by Kislov Ivan on Monday, September 18, 2017

He told Bored Panda that he likes to take “relaxation from routine,” go on “hikes to inaccessible places, raftings,” and walking to “observe the wildlife.”

Posted by Kislov Ivan on Monday, September 18, 2017

He enjoys these activities on his breaks during long shifts at the mines.

Mining for oil, natural gas, coal, gold and tungsten is a major part of the economy here.

Posted by Kislov Ivan on Monday, September 11, 2017

He often finds bear, deer and wolves, but it’s the foxes who let their natural curiosity keep them from retreating.

Kislov says they will let him get close-in so he can shoot with wide-angle and telephoto lenses for amazing shots.

His photos show all the playfulness and beauty of these animals against the stark environment of the Russian Arctic.

What an absolutely wonderful hobby? But we want to know what you think! Would you get so close to take these beautiful pics?

These Airport Pickup Signs Might Make You Laugh From Here to Baggage Claim

Airport pickups usually aren’t a whole lot of fun. You have to drive, they never seem to happen at convenient times, you waste your own gas and time, and don’t even get me started on traffic – but you do them in the hopes that one day, when you need a ride, the favor will be returned.

If you’d seen any of these signs while doing your due diligence, I promise your chore would have almost seemed like it was worth it.

Almost.

17. You might want to call a cab…

16. 100% something my husband would do to me.

15. How will she know HERS, though.

14. That’s one way to get attention.

13. Talk about a warm welcome!

12. When you have something awkward to tell someone, best just get it out of the way.

11. His outfit choice really brings it all together.

10. I’m not sure that everyone needs all that information, but the sentiment is nice.

9. I am so confused by this sign.

8. Awww, Dad.

7. When you’re both big Friends fans.

6. When your kids actually miss you.

5. I would hang around to witness this meet and greet (but also she’s still skinny).

4. Soooo that works?

3. So sweet, what a little guy!

2. Real or fake, it’s kind of an amazing sign.

Are You Scared of Sharks? These 10 Animals Also Cause Death and Destruction.

Steven Spielberg changed our collective psyche when he made Jaws in 1975. Along with creating the summer blockbuster, he also gave the world a fear of sharks!

But film channels, urban legends, and our own paranoia have wrongfully made us fear sharks when there are other threats out there as well. Data shows that the chance of dying thanks to animal encounters stands at one in 1,384,594.

Even so, there are some animals you need to be more careful around. Let’s take a look!

10. Dogs

Data shows that dogs kill up to 28 people in the United States per year.

Dogs aren’t a danger to the general public. In many cases, dogs turn against human owners who have maltreated them.

9. Deer

Sweet, innocent deer?!

Yes, deer are responsible for up to 120 deaths in the United States every year.

To be fair, expansion into their habitat is responsible for many of these deaths. Cities and towns across the country consistently build roads and highways in their habitat, which increases the likelihood of car accidents.

8. Hippos

These adorable mammals can kill humans by biting or sitting on them.

Up to 500 people die in sub-Saharan Africa every year. They also have extremely sharp teeth, so there’s that.

7. Snakes

Snakes are obviously much smaller than sharks, but they kill about 50,000 people every year.

Some species are more toxic than others, and other types of snakes are closer to humans because of expansion into their natural habitat.

6. Snails

The humble freshwater snail isn’t harmful on its own, but 200,000 people die on an annual basis because it carries a parasite called schistosomiasis.

The parasite first invades the body, lays eggs that end up in many tissues, and causes symptoms such as anemia that can cause death in up to 10% of those affected.

5. Lions

We all know to stay away from lions if we see any, but they still kill about 100 humans every year.

Many animals on this list often kill humans by accident, but lions have no problem hunting humans at all.

4. Wolves

Wolves are certainly wild, but they don’t usually kill humans on purpose.

Their sharp teeth are only a danger to humans that actively threaten them.

About 10 people die every year from encountering wolves.

3. Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are small and they exist in almost every part of the world.

They reproduce quickly, suck your blood, and bite you before you even have a chance to fight back.

They also carry diseases such as encephalitis, dengue fever, yellow fever, and malaria.

2. Elephants

These giant mammals are actually gentle and pose no threat to humans as long as they have space and are left alone.

Elephants tend to become afraid when they are confined to tight spaces or mistreated. They will then become scared and see humans as aggressors.

Approximately 100 humans die every year because of elephants.

1. Humans

Yes, humans are the second-deadliest animal on the planet (mosquitoes are actually #1?!?).

But they’re #1 on this list because it’s so unexpected.

Humans kill approximately 475,000 of their fellow brethren every year. Ouch!

What did you think of the animals included on this list? Were you surprised by any of the deadly creatures that kill more people than sharks do on an annual basis?

For the First Time, Penguins Have Been Documented Using the Same Speech Patterns as Humans

It seems like there have been more and more reports of different animals displaying increasingly human characteristics, like making and developing tools, but most of the instances have been in our closer genetic relatives.

So it feels a bit off to say it’s not monkeys, but penguins, whose speech patterns could closely mirror those of people.

African Penguin – nearly adult

A post shared by Gerald Oelze-de Stoppany (@gmaxfotografie) on

Historically, a normal penguin call ranges from a gently peep to a cringe-y squawk, but even though they don’t use words, researchers have found that they’re officially the first non-primates to use the same patterns of speech as human beings.

Scientists studying the songs of African penguins have learned that they use shorter sounds for “words” and longer vocalizations with more syllables when communicating more complex messages, both of which are linguistic principles of human speech around the world.

Zipf’s Law of Brevity postulates that the more often a word is used, the shorter it will be, and vice versa, due to selective pressures to communicate accurately and efficiently.

The Menzerath-Altmann Law says that the longer a word or sentence, the shorter its components will be.

Both principles have been documented in humans and non-human primates, but the penguins are a first.

The authors write in Biology Letters,

“Our results provide the first evidence for conformity to Zipf’s and Menzerath-Altmann laws in the vocal sequences of a non-primate species.”

To come to these conclusion, the researchers studied the calls of 28 adult African penguins, collecting and analyzing 590 display songs during a single breeding season. They found that a sequence of three distinct sounds made up the songs – the first two, a short croak and a longer, exhaled noise that occurred most often, and a third, inhaled vocalization of varied length.

A post shared by Lichen Garden Antiques (@lichengardenantiques) on

The scientists theorized that the first two were simply announcing their presence and availability, while the longer one was some kind of argument about why they were the fitter partner.

“As predicted, we found that the duration of the syllables was inversely correlated with the frequency of occurrence.”

The conclusions seem to point toward language laws not being intrinsically about semantics and syntax, but about the fundamental need to communicate efficiently.

Which means that, if we apply their findings across the board, it may be more likely that we can truly understand what’s being communicated between members of many species.

I can’t wait until we can divine what our cats are thinking. What a day that will be!

You Can Sleep in a Bubble Surrounded by Rescue Elephants in a Thai Jungle

If you’re looking for a very unique outdoor adventure experience, we think we’ve found something you’ll like. In a jungle in Thailand, you can sleep in a bubble in the midst of freely roaming elephants.

These extraordinary accommodations are called “Jungle Bubbles,” and are only found at the Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort in Northern Thailand.

In each 236-square-foot bubble equipped with air-conditioning, you’ll find a king-size bed, a living area and a bathroom. Apart from the bathroom, the rest of the bubble is transparent. Staff drop off your dinner in a basket, so all you have to worry about is enjoying the majesty of 22 elephants.

Rescued from the country’s cities and tourist attractions, the elephants are set to live out the rest of their days roaming freely and peacefully. Visitors can learn more about them by taking a tour led by a veterinarian or a biologist called “Walking with Giants.”

Etienne De Villiers, Anantara’s cluster director of public relations, told Apartment Therapy,

“Guests can observe the elephants’ social interaction in their native habitat.

The fun of either a river bath or mud playtime demonstrates just how cheeky these graceful animals can be.”

The company’s founder saw an elephant begging for food in the streets of Bangkok and decided to start the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation.

Said De Villiers,

“Since then we have operated a rescue rental system that gives entire traditional mahout families a sustainable income from an elephant that is already living with them — this ensures that they will not source, through breeding or wild capture, another elephant to continue their traditional way of life.”

More than 60 elephants have been rescued. Mahout families also receive English lessons, further education for their children and all proceeds from clothing sales of a traditional silkworm business.

This is the type of responsible and sustainable tourism that benefits people, animals and society.

Let’s expand our horizons and do more of THIS!

You Can Now Search 60 Years Worth Of U.F.O. Reports Online From the U.K.

If you’re reading this in the U.S. and you think that Area 51 is the be all end all of alien mysteries the world over, well, the United Kingdom would like everyone in New Mexico to hold their beer.

And if you want more proof and less secrecy well, they’ve got that, too – 60 years of reports of Unidentified Flying Objects are now available for your perusal online.

Live Science reports that the U.K.’s Ministry of Defence is sharing formerly classified documents with the public for the first time, proving once and for all that the Brits have been just as obsessed about possible alien life as anyone else for a very long time.

Even legendary pragmatist Winston Churchill wanted in on the action, writing to his air minister in 1952 “what does all this stuff about flying saucers amount to? What can it mean? What is the truth?”

The excitement surrounding the topic led to a flood of new reports, all dutifully catalogued by the Ministry of Defence. None of the sightings were ever deemed credible (according to the government, do with that what you will), though the Ministry continued to investigate the reports into late 2000s.

Now, very soon, you’ll be able to peruse every reported sighting from that 60-year period on gov.uk.

The reason? A request filed by a British news agency under the Freedom of Information Act.

A few reports have been published already include sightings of “a diamond-shaped red light,” “15 fireballs in the sky,” and “three blazing gold orbs.”

The Ministry of Defence, like all official government outfits, stated that it “has no opinion on the existence or otherwise of extra terrestrial life.”

Like the rest of us have been doing for decades, we’ll just have to read the reports and decide for ourselves.

The truth is out there – now, officially, on the internet.

People Shared Advice on How We Can Help the World’s Suicidal Men

78% of all suicides are committed by men, which means tha the men we encounter on a daily basis – at work, in meetings, our kids’ fathers, our partners, delivering our pizzas – are just not okay.

If you’re worried about someone in your life, or just want to be better equipped to spot and diffuse a potentially devastating situation should it arise, these 15 Redditors have some advice on how you can help.

15. Don’t tell them to ‘man up.’

Treat their mental health seriously.

When they are struggling with a problem the only advice that is given to them to ‘man up’. Which, in my opinion, they have and they just need actual help.

14. We’re all just doing our best.

Stop telling them to man up or grow a pair because men suffer too

13. Be a friend.

Provide more opportunities to form communities and activities that cater to different men’s needs.

A lot of us don’t have friends or intimate platonic relationships, and we’re in desperate need of that.

12. Statistics aren’t everything, but they’re something.

Statistically speaking men work more, work longer hours, work in more dangerous professions and consume more drugs (alcohol and other). In addition men, on average, have fewer close friends and feel lonelier than women. I think the fatigue of such a life can be quite draining.

I don’t think the problem is that men do not talk about their feelings. I think the problem is that they often don’t have someone to talk to. In addition, it can be quite hard to make new friends. Especially when you are past your twenties. You know, people you are potentially interested in are married and have kids. They are preoccupied with their own lives.

I felt very lonely and sad after my last long term relationship ended. It took me over 6 months to find new friends and I’m a hardcore extrovert. Still, I made a bunch of new friends within the past year or so.

I’d like to encourage anyone who feels lonely to put yourself out there. Talk to people. If you like them, ask them if they like to hang out with you. Do you know how I became friends with one of my best friends? I straight up told him that I felt lonely and that I like him and would like to become friends with him. And for those of you who already have plenty of friends and a busy life: Maybe make some room for people in your community who aren’t as blessed as you are.

11. Don’t turn your back on your friends.

I can’t count how many times I’ve tried to approach friends about what I’m going through and gotten cold fucking receptions.

I’ve been ghosted by friends on more than one occasion for doing little more than having feelings. Men are meant to act like nothing ever bothers them at all, and so we end up bottling it up till it comes out in the worst ways.

For me, it’s often alcohol.

10. Toxic masculinity hurts everyone.

Don’t expect men to be “manly”.

We have worries, we have fears just like anyone else. Sometimes we don’t want sex, we just want someone to hold us and tell us everything is going to be be ok. The modern world shouldn’t expect someone to be anything other than a contributing member of society, be it any way. Men like power and feeling looked up to, but like women and children, we need someone to love us and someone we can fall back onto.

When a man, or even a woman is shutting people out and isolating themselves, they need your love the most. I know this will get buried but I hope someone can take something from this.

9. Believe them.

Treat us like humans.

I was sexually assaulted as a child and frequently tried to harm myself but whenever i talked to someone about it they scoffed and said i was telling fibs.

Edit: Thank you for all the kind words. Please if you’re thinking of hurting yourself please seek help don’t go it alone.

8. A little affection goes a long way.

Hugs, compliments and cuddles.

Men does not get enough of these things.

7. People really like hugs.

we like hugs

just hug pls

I want a hug Edit Wow that’s a lot of hugs hugs everyone who saw this

6. You never know when you’ll change someone’s day.

Give us one compliment!! Just one!!

A girl once said I had really pretty eyes. That shit was 7 years ago and I remember it perfectly because its all I’ve gotten in 7 years.

5. Just listen.

An uncle in law shot himself to death this week. The guy was screaming for help and threatening to do it for days. He was 48.

What are the options? If i was dealing with heavy depression and just wanted to talk to someone where do i go? Ive sought independent counselors and they usually turn out to be nutcases themselves. Seems like this just adds to the overall feeling of hopelessness.

4. It’s not weak to need help.

Don’t shame us for asking for help or appearing weak

3. Everyone loves a good compliment.

Compliment them, even if it’s something small.

“Wow that’s a nice shirt, it looks good on you.”

“Your hair looks nice today.”

A girl complimented my nose 4 years ago (weird I know), but I STILL remember that compliment.

2. An important list.

-Stop using expressions such as “man up”, “stop being a pussy” when a man expresses any sad emotions.

– Lead by example. For so long, men have been taught that they always have to be hard and tough to be “real men”. It’s time to break that cycle and have fathers show their sons and daughter that it’s okay to feel all da emotions. That it’s okay to cry, it’s okay to be vulnerable and open up about your struggles.

– Accepting that men can also be victims of physical/emotional abuse and rape, and providing as much support for them as we do for women.

– LISTEN TO EACH OTHER, it’s pointless telling men to open up about their feelings if no one is there to take them seriously.

– Body shaming is just as bad when it’s directed at a man. Men receive so little compliments, tell them they’re looking fit!

Edit: thank you so much for the gold! I’m finding the discussion in the replies so interesting and am so glad to be a part of it. You people raised some great points, I’ll reply later but just to clear up a few things…

When I say let men cry and show feelings, I do not mean they need to start crying and mull over every little thing. All I’m saying is that there needs to be a healthy balance between expressing and regulating your emotions. Everyone has different coping mechanisms. Yes, at times it’s necessary to “just suck it up”, to do what you gotta do. However, it’s not healthy to just suppress every negative emotion (Something that’s still often encouraged in our society). Not only does this cause things to build up, eventually destroying your mental health, but also, it inhibits you from learning how to communicate your feelings (good and bad) to people. If something hurts, then it fucking hurts. If it upsets you to the point of tears, that’s okay! Let it all out, there’s no shaming here! Girlfriend broke up with you and you need to just talk it out? Call up your friend! Tell them how this really sucks and how they can support you. Don’t feel like talking to anyone about it? That’s okay too! Let your friends know that you’re going through a hard time and you can fill them in later if you want to, after you’ve had your time alone.

In short, let’s break down those outdated gender norms and start using those healthy coping mechanisms, cheers!

1. It’s okay to cry.

Allow men to express sorrow without shaming them and instead supply support.

The ‘real men don’t cry’ idea kills.

This is such an important topic, and one that’s not going to get better unless we all learn to keep a keener eye, and to care for even the strangers among us.

If you’re feeling suicidal, please reach out to a friend, therapist, or the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-TALK.

A Baker Went Viral Because Her Heart-Shaped Cookies Turned out Looking Like Balls

Baking is a tricky skill to master. A lot can go wrong, even for the experienced chef.

23 year old Emma Plummer made a splash online recently when her attempt at some heart-shaped treats came out a little more…nutty than she’d planned.

Photo via Buzzfeed

Emma specializes in macarons, which she usually knocks out of the park.

I mean…. look at those beauties. I am fully in lust.

But her attempt at some Valentine’s themed snacks…well… turned out a bit differently than she expected.

That’s right. What were supposed to be hearts, turned out to be scrotums. And REALLY good looking scrotums at that.

45K retweets later… she turned the “lemons” into lemonade.

Twitter joined in with their own baking fails.

A lot of people thought they were an accidental work of genius.

And, of course, the perfect name inevitably emerged.

What do you think? Would you buy a pack’a’sackrons? For what occasion?

Let us know in the comments.
