A Russian Scientist Injected Himself With 3.5-Million-Year-Old Bacteria

When I first heard about this story, I assumed this action was taken for some kind of test, but I’m wrong.

Russian doctor Anatoli Brouchkov injected himself with 3.5-million-year-old bacteria because he believes it will help him live longer.

Dr. Brouchkov discovered the ancient bacteria known as Bacillus F back in 2009. The bacteria was found frozen in the permafrost on a mountain in Siberia (does this sound like a movie plot, or what?). Brouchkov estimated that the bacteria was 3.5-million-years-old and also discovered that it was still alive. The bacteria was frozen deeper in the permafrost than even wooly mammoths.

Brouchkov discovered that Bacillus F makes things around it live longer, as well. Tests have shown that the bacteria has indeed caused mice, fruit flies, and crops to live longer. Also, the people in the region of Siberia where the bacteria was found live longer than average-and it might be because Bacillus F is in their water supply.

So Dr. Brouchkov decided to be a human guinea pig and be the first person to inject themself with this interesting bacteria. In 2015, two years after he injected himself with Bacillus F, the doctor said he felt better than ever and that he hadn’t gotten the cold or the flu since he took that big step.

Scientists are still working on finding out just what exactly makes Bacillus F causes things to live longer, so it will be a while before this bacteria may be harnessed to benefit the greater good of humanity, if that happens at all.

It’s a pretty amazing story, no doubt about that. Has Dr. Brouchkov discovered the elusive ‘Fountain of Youth’ that explorers and scientists have been searching for? Time will tell…

Elon Musk is Recruiting for Tesla and Doesn’t Even Care If You Graduated From High School

Do you feel held back because you don’t think you have the right educational background? Well, here’s a bit of good news that might give you some hope about the future.

None other than Tesla CEO Elon Musk is hiring for his company and he said on Twitter…

Yeah, that’s right. He actually said,

“A PhD is definitely not required. [I] don’t care if you even graduated high school.”

Musk is talking about opportunities with Tesla’s artificial intelligence department. Musk said he’s looking for candidates with a “deep understanding” of artificial intelligence and that all applicants have to pass a “hardcore coding test.”

This isn’t the first time that Musk has talked about what he thinks about college degrees. In a 2014 interview, he said, “There’s no need even to have a college degree at all, or even high school.” You don’t hear that very often from CEOs out there, do you?

He added,

“If somebody graduated from a great university, that may be an indication that they will be capable of great things, but it’s not necessarily the case.

If you look at, say, people like Bill Gates or Larry Ellison, Steve Jobs, these guys didn’t graduate from college, but if you had a chance to hire them, of course that would be a good idea.”

Musk said that instead, he looks for “evidence of exceptional ability”, regardless of what kind of education a person might have. Musk said he would ideally like his new recruits to work either in the San Francisco Bay Area or in Austin, Texas, but they could also work at one of the three Tesla Gigfactories where the company makes it electric motors and battery packs. The factories are in Buffalo, New York, Sparks, Nevada, and Shanghai, China. A fourth factory is planned for Berlin, Germany.

Gary Sinise Received the Patriot Award for Supporting Veterans for Decades

Gary Sinise is a great actor, but he’s also a great person who has been giving back to help our veterans for the past 25 years.

Sinise made his name in Hollywood with roles in such films as Forrest Gump, Apollo 13, and The Green Mile, but it’s his amazing work with veterans that led to Sinise recently being presented with the Patriot Award from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California.

Sinise has made helping out veterans in various ways his life’s work and he started the Gary Sinise Foundation in 2010 to make a bigger impact.

The mission of the foundation is stated as follows:

“At the Gary Sinise Foundation, we serve our nation by honoring our defenders, veterans, first responders, their families, and those in need.

We do this by creating and supporting unique programs designed to entertain, educate, inspire, strengthen, and build communities.”

Check out this video of the impact his foundation has for the people it helps…

In an interview, Sinise said,

“I’ve found that service is the best way to heal. If every person in every neighborhood around the country took a little bit of responsibility for patting these folks on the back, all the problems that we hear about with regards to veterans not getting services or falling through the cracks would disappear.

If citizens would look at their freedom providers in a little bit different way.”

Sinise’s grandfather served in World War II, two of his uncles fought in World War II, and his father served in the Korean War.

It Was 65 Degrees in Antarctica Recently

In my opinion, there are few things scarier in our world right now than the drastic climate change we’re seeing and how it affects places as far flung as Antarctica. So the news that the continent recently experienced its hottest day EVER is causing me even more anxiety.

Yes, Argentina’s Esperanza Base, at the very northern tip of Antarctica, recorded a temperature of 65 degrees Fahrenheit.

The previous high temperature for Antarctica was 63.5 degrees in March 2015.

Alexandra Isern, head of Antarctic sciences at the National Science Foundation, said that the Antarctic Peninsula is “one of the fastest warming areas on the planet.”

Even more distressing, the recording in Antarctica came after the hottest January on record.

This is all part of a cycle that could have major repercussions for the planet. The warmer temperatures mean warmer seawater, which means more melting glaciers and rising sea levels all over the world: and that leads to even further warming.

Randall Cerveny of the World Meteorological Organization says,

“When I started this project all the way back in 2007, I thought we would have maybe an evaluation once every few years.

Now we’re having MULTIPLE observations of extreme climate every year.”

A scary sign, to be sure.

Tumblr Users Roasted a Silly Loophole in How ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Treated the Curse of Davy Jones

Davy Jones’ Locker, or the Curse of Davy Jones… you know about those right? For most, Pirates of the Caribbean is THE intro to the topic, and that’s why people on Tumblr are debating a certain scene from At World’s End far past the point of credulity.

Basically, the curse is such… Davy Jones had his heart removed and captains the Flying Dutchman, a ghost ship never able to make port because he can only return to dry land every ten years.

Well, in the scene in question, he’s standing on a sandbar in a bucket of seawater.

A Woman Asked If She’s Wrong for Wanting Her Infertile Sister to Host Her Baby Shower and People Had Some Thoughts

The subreddit Am I The A**hole has grown in popularity over the past several years, and is a home for every potential jerk out there wanting to know if they done a friend or family member wrong.

In this case, I give you a woman who started casually dating her sister’s ex-fiancee, proceeded to get knocked up, and wants her infertile sister to host the shower.

The sister, for some context, had to go on antidepressants after finding out she would likely never have children, and it’s unclear whether the news precipitated the breakup.

A Twitter User Tried to Prove There Are Only 10 Movie Poster Designs…There Are More

There’s discussion about the lack of originality in Hollywood right now. It’s just understood at this point that the vast majority of wide releases are going to be sequels, remakes, reboots, adaptations, or spin-offs.

But what most of us have failed to notice is that not only are the films themselves over-familiar, but the poster designs too.

Twitter user @leesteffen proposed that there are really only 10 types of movies according to their poster designs, and he brought receipts.
