Siberia’s ‘Door to the Underworld’ Is Growing

A Siberian crater known locally as the “door to the underworld” is expanding, revealing millennia of climate data, along with long-lost forests and the remains of prehistoric animals. This is fine.

The Batagaika crater, a.k.a. the door to the underworld, a.k.a. the megaslump (we are not making this up), plunges into the permafrost in the northern Sakha Republic.

The kilometer-long, 328-foot-deep chasm has been growing since the 1960s as the result of climate change. As the permafrost thaws and softens, large sections of soil collapse, revealing a wealth of bizarre geological and biological material. Extreme weather events like flooding have accelerated the process. The crater is now gobbling up another 33 to 98 feet of tundra per year, emitting enormous booming sounds as large clods of soil fall in.

It sounds like the stuff of nightmares, but it’s also a scientist’s dream: a ready-made window into the world below the surface, going back hundreds of thousands of years.

“Its size is amazing,” researcher Julian Murton told the Siberian Times. “The crack itself is perfectly exposed, uncovered, all the layers are perfectly visible and can be thoroughly studied.”

Initial estimates put the soil in the deepest part of the chasm at around 120,000 years old, but Murton’s analysis of plant matter in the dirt found it was probably closer to 200,000 years.

The soil and its contents are a rich record of local life, including two wood-rich layers that Murton and his colleagues believe were once forests.

Additional exploration of the chasm has yielded the bodies of bison, horses, elks, mammoths, and reindeer, as well as a 4400-year-old foal, all beautifully preserved by the region’s year-round blistering cold.

The chasm is fascinating but problematic. Climate experts are concerned that the dissolution of the permafrost is unleashing thousands of years worth of stored carbon into the atmosphere. It’s “what we call positive feedback,” Frank Günther of Germany’s Alfred Wegener Institute told the BBC. “Warming accelerates warming, and these features may develop in other places.”

Science hasn’t yet confirmed any benefits of binge-watching streaming television. In fact, some early reports have indicated mainlining video can often correlate with obesity, fatigue, and antisocial behavior.

If you’d rather do more watching than researching, check out these five titles that are likely to make you feel fatter and more introverted.

1. IMPOSSIBLE DREAMERS (2016)

Documentary director Eric Goldfarb spent three years chronicling the lives of several senior athletes ranging in age from 60 to 94, including 81-year-old golfer Gary Player. Player became one of the first putters to embrace physical fitness, squatting 325 pounds before a 1963 U.S. Open at a time when golfers weren’t expected to be that devoted to the weight room. Player joins several other AARP-eligible athletes who could probably break your Millennial neck. (3/1)

Explore the Origins of French Cuisine With This 200-Year-Old Map

France is known as the unofficial culinary capital of the world to many, and for good reason. French products like brie, cognac, and champagne are enjoyed far beyond the nation’s borders. For a look at where France’s most beloved gourmet exports originated, refer to the early 19th-century map above.

As highlighted on Atlas Obscura, the “Gastronomical Map of France” was created by Jean François Tourcaty in 1809. A scan of the map takes viewers through the country’s most delectable landmarks, from Roquefort, home to the region’s pungent blue cheese, to Dijon, the birthplace of the world-famous mustard. While some places are no longer producing their signature delicacies, many of them are still home to the food and wine they were known for 200 years ago.

The map first appeared in the book Cours Gastronomique, which was written by Charles Louis Cadet de Gassicourt, the possible illegitimate son of Louis XV. The culinary tome was published a decade after the French Revolution, around the same time the fine dining industry was starting to explode in France.

Australian photographer Warren Keelan has always been fascinated by nature, and his latest project takes him out into the ocean, where he shoots detailed images of powerful waves in all their forms.

“I love the raw, unpredictable nature of water in motion and the way sunlight brings it all to life, from both above and below the surface,” he tells mental_floss. “I am obsessed with the beautiful moods and emotions of the sea.”

To capture his photos, Keelan wades into the water with a 22-pound rig that keeps his camera dry, dodging waves as he shoots. It’s a complicated dance, but it yields beautiful results, as you can see in his photos.
