7 Easy Ways to Boost Your Social Media Presence

filed under: internet, tech

That smiley photo you posted on Facebook only got three likes. Your pithy tweet is met with silence. You have no idea how to Snapchat. Failing to get a reaction on social media can be frustrating and embarrassing—and it can also be bad for business. Social media has become an essential way to connect with customers, not just friends, so we spoke with marketing and digital strategy experts about tried and true ways to boost your social media profile.

1. DETERMINE YOUR OBJECTIVE.

Do you want more followers? Are you trying to engage your customers? Figure out your goal before deciding on a strategy, says Dana DiTomaso, president of Kick Point, a digital-first marketing agency.

2. INTERVIEW YOUR CUSTOMERS.

Get to know your audience’s online tastes and habits and adjust your game plan accordingly. Once you discover why they go online, you can figure out what you should be putting on your social media pages, DiTomaso, says. In order to help a healthcare client gain more customers, for instance, DiTomaso interviewed a group of local nurses about why they use social media. Turns out, they often log on to see where their favorite food trucks are at lunch. So DiTomaso suggested her client incorporate the food trucks into their events. Similarly, after determining that a builder client’s online followers were interested in home design, DiTomaso encouraged her client to share more stories about decor.

3. USE VISUALS.

Eye-catching photos, graphics, or videos can help your posts stand out from the rest, says Peg Fitzpatrick, a social media speaker and strategist. Fitzpatrick suggests using Adobe Spark for fun, easy, and free graphics and videos.

4. USE HASHTAGS.

Think of hashtags as the glue that holds social conversations and ideas together, Fitzpatrick says. “On Instagram, you can use up to thirty hashtags per post,” she says. Fitzpatrick recommends using hashtags that are relevant to your photo to connect it with like-minded people. “I put one or two in the initial description and the rest in a comment on the post.” But use discretion: Over-hashtagging or tagging unrelated terms or products makes people cranky—and you won’t reach the right audience.

5. BE STRATEGIC ABOUT YOUR FACEBOOK POSTS.

Maintaining an engaging and interesting Facebook page is an art, Fitzpatrick says. She recommends the following steps to make your page more popular: Experiment with posting at different times of the day; add variety to your posts; space your posts apart so you don’t clog your fans’ newsfeed.

6. CROSS-PROMOTE YOUR CONTENT.

Use social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram to share your videos to reach more people. “The wildly successful vloggers are all working multiple social media channels with their YouTube content,” Fitzpatrick says.

7. GO LIVE.

According to Facebook, people will spend triple the time watching a live video as they will one that was previously recorded. So think of an event, interview, or contest that you can broadcast live in order to attract more eyes to your page.

Blame the Brain for the Hearing Loss That Comes With Aging

iStock

The reason why older people typically can’t hear very well has very little to do with the functional capabilities of their ears, Co.Exist reports. Instead, as a recent study in the Journal of Neurophysiology (freely available here) investigates, it has more to do with how the brain processes sound, and how that ability deteriorates as we age.

Researchers at the University of Maryland, College Park report that the deterioration is due to aging’s effect on the brain’s midbrain (associated with hearing as well as vision and motor control) and cortex (associated with thought and language). The study examined 17 younger adults and 15 older people with no signs of dementia. They were asked to listen to an audiobook while another narrated audiobook played in the background.

When trying to distinguish between the voices of two different speakers, the midbrains of older adults don’t respond as strongly as those of younger people. The older adults’ brains couldn’t encode the auditory signals as well, and they took longer to process speech, especially when there were two competing voices. The older brain appears to be less capable of picking out one sound out of many.

However, their cortex actually reconstructed the amplitude of the speech they heard in the brain with greater accuracy—an exaggerated response, which may reveal why older people need to pay more attention to process the noise of people talking. As the study’s abstract notes, this response suggests “an age-related over (or inefficient) use of cognitive resources that may explain their difficulty in processing speech targets while trying to ignore interfering noise.”

So the next time you encounter an older individual who is hard of hearing, don’t bother trying to speak louder. It won’t help them hear you any better. Instead, move your conversation to a place with less background noise.

Attention Modernist Architecture Lovers: Visit Columbus, Indiana

First Christian Church (1942) by Hadley Fruits

If you want to see architectural gems by world-famous Modernist designers, the 44,000-person city of Columbus, Indiana might be your best bet. The unassuming Midwestern town has an incredible number of buildings by celebrated designers like I.M. Pei and Eero Saarinen, as Co.Design reports.

The city has more than 80 buildings, landscapes, and pieces of public art by world-famous architects and artists, with seven buildings classified as National Historic Landmarks, according to Exhibit Columbus, an arts festival designed to showcase the town’s architectural gems.

Much of this design heritage is due to the endeavors of Joseph Miller, an industrialist whose family founded the Cummins Corporation, a manufacturer of engines and power generators. In 1954, as chairman of the company, he founded a corporate foundation that has supported public architecture ever since. Miller’s goal was to turn Columbus into a town that could attract the best and brightest employees, starting with making sure that it had beautiful schools. In 1957, the foundation began offering grants to pay for architecture fees associated with buildings schools. Later, the foundation began offering grants for all public buildings.

Asa result, Columbus was able to commission award-winning, world-renowned designers like Robert Venturi and John Rauch, who built a firehouse; Richard Meier, who built an elementary school; and Robert A.M. Stern, who designed a county hospital expansion. (The full list of grant winners is on the Cummins website [PDF].) Other notable mid-century buildings in town were designed by Eliel Saarinen (with furniture by Charles Eames), his son Eero Saarinen, and I.M. Pei.

“The influence of architecture with which we are surrounded in our youth affects our lives, our standards, our tastes when we are grown, just as the influence of the parents and teachers with which we are surrounded in our youth affects us as adults,” Miller, who died in 2004, once explained of his passion for good public design.

Exhibit Columbus, in its inaugural year, hopes to invigorate interest in great architecture and design in the city by awarding grants to artists to design and install temporary installations inspired by one of the historic buildings in Columbus.

How ‘Thriller’ Was Made: Watch Michael Jackson’s Rehearsal Videos

filed under: music, video

Iconic music videos don’t just come together on the first try, but we rarely get to see the magic behind the final result. In the case of Michael Jackson’s hit “Thriller,” someone was kind enough to film some of the rehearsals so that we can see how one of the most famous music videos in history came together.

Because we know you can’t get enough of MJ’s dance moves, this video intersperses footage from the actual music video with some of the accompanying rehearsals. Notably, it includes his one-on-one rehearsals with co-star Ola Ray.

7 Boo-zy Beers to Drink This Halloween

iStock

You may be too old to beg your neighbors for candy, but once you’re an adult, Halloween offers plenty of other seasonal treats to look forward to. This includes a whole bunch of limited-run beers with scary label art and spine-tingling (and tongue-tingling) flavors. Here are seven appropriately themed beers to stock your Halloween party with.

1. LITTLE HORROR OF HOPS // SHIPYARD BREWING

True to its name, Shipyard’s rye IPA packs a fiercely hoppy punch. The horror part comes in when you look closely at the label, which depicts a terrifyingly toothy hop-monster dripping blood. It’s only available between September and November, so get it while you can.

2. BRAAAIINS! PUMPKIN ALE FOR ZOMBIES // SPRING HOUSE BREWING

Spring House’s brews aren’t available many places outside the Pennsylvania region, but if you find yourself in Lancaster this fall, head to one of their brewpubs to get a pint of their Braaaiins! Pumpkin Ale for Zombies. The brewery blends real pumpkin into the mash and adds a few autumn spices, making it the perfect boozy, bubbly pumpkin spice experience you and your undead friends have been looking for.

3. NOSFERATU IMPERIAL RED ALE // GREAT LAKES BREWING

This hair-raising hoppy ale is named after the titular character in the 1922 German vampire film, a brazen rip-off of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Stoker thought “Nosferatu” meant “vampire” in Romanian, and used the term as a synonym in his book, but it may actually be a mistranslation of a Romanian word for “unbearable” or “horrid,” nesuferit. Great Lakes’ vampiric brew has an 8 percent ABV, so watch that you don’t let it make you into the monster.

4. DEAD GUY ALE // ROGUE BREWING

Rogue’s German-style Maibock ale is available year-round, but during the fall, it really plays up its eerie name, because in honor of Halloween, the bottles glow in the dark. Inside, you’ll find the same malty, caramel ale as always. But you’ll feel really, really cool toasting with it in a dim room.

5. MEPHISTOPHELES // AVERY BREWING

Boulder, Colorado’s Avery Brewing takes its demonic ales very seriously. In fact, the brewery has a whole line of them. The Mephistopheles stout, named after the Faustian evil spirit, is “a tangled and intricate labyrinth of bittersweet rapture,” according to the brewery. If that sounds a little too terrifying, you can also get your fall kicks with their Pump[KY]n porter, which is aged in bourbon barrels for that little extra something.

6. FREAKTOBERFEST // CONEY ISLAND BREWING

Coney Island’s take on the ubiquitous pumpkin beer has an unexpected twist: coffee. It’s brewed with beans from Brooklyn’s Cafe Grumpy, creating a pumpkin ale with the slightest hint of chocolatey espresso. It smells like a coffeeshop, but it tastes like you’re enjoying a really great piece of pie with your cup of joe. If that doesn’t sound scary enough for Halloween, just check out the crazed eyes of the carny on the label.

7. DEATH HOPPY BLACK ALE // SHMALTZ BREWING

Despite the Day-of-the-Dead-inspired branding, the upstate New York brewery Shmaltz says its Death Hoppy Black Ale is actually a nod to Jewish mourning traditions. Seven kinds of hops, seven kinds of malts, and the 7 percent ABV are a nod to the seven days of sitting shiva. But hopefully the only thing you’ll be mourning is running out of beer.

A Skin Patch Could Help Treat Peanut Allergies

filed under: Food, medicine
IStock

For people living with a peanut allergy, the innocent-looking legume might as well be cyanide: Even trace amounts left over from a shared food preparation space can lead to a dangerous swelling of the airway. This kind of selective toxicity has led to a rash of well-meaning reactions over the years, from schools inspecting lunch boxes for peanut contamination to one Massachusetts school even evacuating a bus because a single peanut had been left on the floor.

But the day may be coming when both the peanut-allergic and the non-responders alike can breathe more easily. Gizmodo reports that a skin patch to treat the allergy just finished the first stage of a highly promising clinical trial.

Dubbed the Viaskin Peanut Patch, the small disc is placed on the arm or between the shoulder blades and delivers micro-doses of peanut protein. Like a vaccine, the idea is to expose the wearer’s immune system to small amounts of the allergen so it can develop a reasonable tolerance.

The first part of the study, which just concluded, gave 74 volunteers aged 4 to 25 with an existing peanut allergy a patch with a high concentration (250 mg), a low concentration (100 mg), or a placebo with no peanut protein at all. A new disc was applied every day for a year, with the subjects returning for a follow-up. Nearly half experienced increased tolerance to peanut exposure, with children aged 4 to 11 seeing the largest amount of improvement. Subjects who responded to treatment could consume at least 10 times the amount of peanut protein that they could prior to the trial.

The Viaskin is not necessarily intended to allow the wearer to enjoy peanuts on a whim, but it may significantly reduce the chances of having a severe allergic reaction to accidental exposures. DBV Technologies hopes to continue the study in pursuit of eventual Food and Drug Administration approval, with an eye on producing similar treatments for those with milk and egg allergies.

J.K. Rowling’s Crime Novels Have Been Picked Up by HBO

Since the release of the final Harry Potter book, J.K. Rowling has had no trouble staying busy. She has since written a film script, shared bonus content on Pottermore, and secretly published three crime novels under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. The author’s latest endeavor will be executive producing the TV adaptation of her Cormoran Strike series set to air on HBO, Deadline reports.

J.K. Rowling/Robert Galbraith’s first Cormoran Strike book debuted in 2013. The novels follow private investigator Cormoran Strike, a war veteran solving cases out of his London office. HBO has acquired the U.S. and Canadian rights to all three books in the series—The Cuckoo’s Calling, The Silkworm, and Career of Evil—and plans to air them as a three-part television event. The series is being produced by BBC One, with filming kicking off in London this fall.

This isn’t the first time Rowling’s content has found a home on HBO: The network also collaborated with BBC One last year to show the miniseries adaptation of her political drama The Casual Vacancy. The release date of their latest Rowling project has yet to be announced, but Robert Galbraith fans can expect another Cormoran Strike book in 2017.

11 Wisecracking Secrets of Stand-Up Comedians

Laughter may be contagious, but it’s hard to make an audience of strangers laugh night after night. Whether it’s telling jokes, doing impersonations, or sharing stories about their mother-in-law, stand-up comedians try their hardest to get the crowds to cackle. Mental_floss got in touch with a few stand-up comedians to learn more about what it’s like to try—and occasionally fail—to make people laugh for a living.

1. THEY’RE NOT ALWAYS DEPRESSED.

Although many famous stand-up comedians have struggled with depression and substance abuse, the stereotype of an unhappy, insecure comedian is overblown. “There’s this pervasive perception that all stand-up comics are depressed, divorced, alcoholic losers at the end of their rope, but that’s not the case these days,” explains Andrew Michaan, a comedian who lives in Los Angeles.

Michaan tells mental_floss that it’s possible to be a stand-up comedian while also being a happy and pleasant person: “Maybe [we’ll] … eventually be broken by impending emotional upheavals and the defeating nature of show business and the universe itself, but for now we’re defying stereotypes one well-adjusted smile at a time.”

2. DON’T ASK THEM TO TELL YOU A JOKE.

Although their job is to make people laugh, stand-up comedians draw a line between performing on stage and interacting with people in their daily life. If you discover that someone is a comedian, and your usual response is to demand a joke, you’re probably being annoying (sorry). Likewise, most comedians don’t want you to tell them jokes or funny stories, hoping that they’ll add it to their act. What’s funny to you may not be funny to a larger audience, and your story might not translate well to a stand-up act.

3. MOST OF THEM HAVE TO PAY TO PERFORM.

Unless they’re at the top of their game or have built a sizable following, most stand-up comedians have to pay for the chance to make you laugh. Beginning comics often practice their routine at open mic nights, where they may have to pay a cover and sit through hours of other newbie comics’ performances. After they’ve succeeded at open mic nights, comics usually perform at what’s known as “bringer shows“—events where they perform in exchange for guaranteeing the venue that they’ll bring anywhere from two to 15 friends (who will each pay for a ticket and drinks) to the venue.

4. THEY SPEND A LOT OF TIME WRITING.

Stand-up comic Chris Fairbanks says he’s often asked if he writes his own material. “All stand-ups do, or should,” he says, “unless they’re cheating and stealing from other comics. And if you’re having someone else write your jokes and doing them on stage as your own, then in my opinion, you’re an actor,” he explains.

But not just any writing will do: Comedians try to tell stories, particularly ones that will not only make an audience laugh but also connect emotionally. (One definition of a good story: it introduces a problem that needs to be solved, includes an element of vulnerability or fear, and concludes with a resolution to the problem.) Long before they ever step on stage, most comedians are putting pen to paper—or fingers to keyboard—drawing from their daily life, their family, or their romantic relationships to try and tell compelling, funny stories.

5. TO MAKE MONEY, THEY HIT THE ROAD.

Because some large cities have a surplus of comedians, it can be difficult to make money by performing shows in just one area. “We don’t make any money doing shows in Los Angeles. Maybe you can make cab fare here and there in NYC, but LA comics have to leave the city and work the road to make an actual living,” Fairbanks explains. And because audiences in different cities have varying senses of humor and taste, some comedians alter their routine slightly to appeal to the locals—perhaps by referring to local sports teams, weather, or stereotypes about the city’s residents.

6. THEY’RE PAYING CLOSE ATTENTION TO YOUR REACTION.

Until they try a new joke in front of an audience, stand-up comedians don’t know if their material will actually work. Even minor tweaks in tone and diction can elicit more laughs, so comedians have their ear fine-tuned to the crowd to determine what works and what doesn’t. And when a certain joke continually fails to elicit laughter from multiple audiences, comedians will remove it from their set.

Stand-up comedian Christina Lopez, who admits that it can take years to develop a killer 30-minute set, describes how she reacts instantly to what the audience is feeling: “As my act goes on, I feel the audience going in another direction and will literally switch jokes in my head to make my LPM (laughs per minute) go up. Kind of like some weird mind trick going on right before your eyes,” she explains.

7. THEY KNOW HOW TO GRACEFULLY HANDLE HECKLERS.

Audiences will sometimes include an individual so drunk and/or obnoxious they shout at the comedian and try to interrupt the show. But according to Michaan, it’s very rare to encounter someone who’s truly having a bad time and wants to ruin the show for the performer and audience. “What’s more common is someone who is enjoying themselves but doesn’t understand what’s expected of an audience member. They don’t know the boundaries, and they talk too much and want to be involved,” he explains. To deal with that type of heckler, Michaan addresses the person, thanks them for being excited, and asks them to please stop talking. “I usually speak to them right on the border of nice and mean,” he says.

Jared Volle, a stand-up comedian who also trains other comedians at CreativeStandUp.com, adds that hecklers can give comedians an opportunity to improvise, be authentic, and add fun to the show. “Some of the greatest moments I’ve had on stage [were] due to some type of heckle … I see hecklers as an invitation to be real with the audience and to really connect with them,” Volle tells mental_floss.

8. IT’S STILL RARE TO SEE SUCCESSFUL FEMALE COMEDIANS.

Although comedians such as Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman, and Tina Fey have achieved mainstream success, comedy is still largely a man’s world. Author and speaking coach Judy Carter says that when she was touring as a female stand-up comic in the late 1980s, the amount of sexism in the business always shocked her: “Most often I was introduced as an oddity—‘Are you ready for something different? We have a FEMALE stand-up!’” And she says sexism is still entrenched in the comedy world. “Still today I am shocked at the consistency of all-male lineups at comedy clubs,” she admits.

9. A SILENT AUDIENCE ISN’T THE END OF THE WORLD.

Although most comedians are terrified of the idea of bombing—performing to a silent crowd that doesn’t laugh or smile—a quiet audience can be an opportunity. “If you just plow ahead and do your normal material without mentioning [the silence and uncomfortable vibe], you’re going to continue to do poorly,” Michaan says. Rather than insult the audience, Michaan says he’ll start chatting with them to confront the silence head-on. Once he determines where the weird vibe is coming from, he can try to create a shared funny experience that brings the room together, then build from there. “Or I just run away crying. Either way,” he jokes.

10. DON’T TAKE EVERYTHING THEY SAY AT FACE VALUE.

To be conversational and topical, stand-up comedians often relate a story about something that happened to them recently, whether it was their dog’s trip to the veterinarian or their dishwasher breaking. But don’t take everything they say literally. When they’re on stage, comedians inhabit a persona, exaggerating certain qualities and glossing over others for comic effect. For example, comedians will often say that something happened to them recently when it really happened years ago—or may have never happened at all.

11. THEY’RE ADDICTED TO MAKING YOU LAUGH.

Struggling stand-up comedians put up with low (or no) pay, grimy clubs, and hours of bad open mic nights because they simply love to make people laugh. Being on stage, with the spotlight and everyone’s attention on them, makes them feel important and confident. And because laughter (or silence) is immediate and audible, stand-up comedians know right away whether they’ve been successful. This instantaneous feedback, and the sweet sound of laughter when their jokes kill, draw them back to the stand-up stage again and again.
