A Breast Cancer Vaccine Might Be Available in Less Than 10 Years

No matter who you are, you’ve likely known someone who’s been impacted by breast cancer.

That’s why this news from the world-renowned Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, is potentially so groundbreaking. The institution recently announced that a vaccine that could stop the recurrence of breast and ovarian cancer, that could even stop them from developing in the first place, may be available within eight years.

The vaccine is in the early stages of development, and it would be at least three years before it was available to large numbers of patients. Mayo Clinic investigator Keith L. Knutson said, “It is reasonable to say that we could have a vaccine within eight years that may be available to patients through their pharmacy or their doctor.”

Staff at the clinic already have two vaccines against breast cancer, and they’re currently worked on the third one. This latest vaccine is intended to fight DCIS, ductal carcinoma in situ, a non-invasive breast cancer that appears in 300,000 new cases each year.

Knutson added, “We know that they’re safe. We know that they stimulate the immune system [to fight cancer]. We know that they have had a positive impact on ovarian and breast cancer. We haven’t seen any adverse events that are causing problems other than irritation in the area similar to a flu vaccination. Now we have to convince the FDA, through solid, rigorous clinical trials that we’re seeing what we’re seeing.”

This “Phase 3″ clinical trial could potentially cost millions of dollars to carry out, which is why the process takes years. The vaccines the clinic is working on are intended to boost the body’s immune system and kill cancer cells. Knutson said, “If you develop a cold or something like that, you do develop an immune response, and that actually doesn’t necessarily prevent the disease, but it keeps it at bay and it helps clear it.”

Knutson added that the Mayo Clinic is working on the foundation they’ve already established to attempt to further develop their cancer-fighting vaccines. This may be a few years away, but it gives hope, both to women currently fighting cancer and to those who fear developing it in the future.

A Woman Walked Until She Bled to Prove a Point About Her Job’s Senseless Dress Code

Men don’t understand what it’s like to be a woman, which is perhaps understandable, as they are not and never have been a woman. But it’s also the reason why they should, you know, listen to actual women when it comes to their own lived experiences. Things like what’s comfortable to wear for work.

Reddit user u/Inconvenientsilence works at a U.K. casino as a bartender. She stewed quietly as management altered things so that the male bartenders stayed behind the bar and the females were made to circulate with trays.

She could not take it sitting down, though, when they changed the dress code – for the female bartenders only.

Instead of being able to wear black slacks, a black shirt, and comfortable shoes for their 12-hour shifts, women began to be expected to wear tight gray dresses and high heels.

Despite protests from the female staff, who told management that their feet wouldn’t be able to manage the long shift on their feet, management insisted.

So, this Reddit user decided to do exactly what they wanted in order to prove her point.

By the end of her shift, her feet were literally running with blood and she was shaking with pain.

Management was shocked to see what their dress code caused, but they also clearly understood the message and backed down.

I want to say good for this woman, but honestly, men should not have to see actual blood for them to listen to their female employees.

Just sayin’.

Bars in Italy Are Using Pasta Straws to Get Rid of Plastic Waste

Lately, companies have caused a stir (see what I did there?) by getting rid of plastic straws or only distributing them when customers specifically ask for them.

In Italy, bars and restaurants are now using pasta straws for drinks to cut down on plastic waste. What could be more Italian than drinking out of a pasta straw?!?!

Here in Italy bars are starting to use pasta as straws to reduce plastic use. Our technology amazes the world another time. from europe

The European Union voted to ban single-use plastic items by 2021, and it looks like the Italians are getting a head start.

Interestingly, there’s already a company in the UK called Stroodles that sells pasta straws. Maxim Gelmann, the founder of the company said, “Stroodles is not just a straw company and there is a much bigger picture, as I feel I can leave a long-term impact by creating a ripple effect by triggering many small changes all across the world, especially among people that are less conscious of sustainability and their respective actions and behaviors.”

Gelmann added,

“The approach is to do this in a fun and non-preachy, non-finger-pointing manner. I rather aim for people to engage with a Stroodle and then themselves start asking themselves the right questions, like ‘Why is there a pasta straw in my drink?’ Thus, little realizations like that and them coming to their own conclusions, rather than being sold/preached. [It’s] much more powerful in creating behavioral and mindsets change. And … maybe next time one is offered a plastic bag, they will behave differently.”

I haven’t seen these in the U.S. yet, but maybe they’ll be coming soon?

The next step? Let’s work on getting pasta cups!

LEGO Is Running Completely on Renewable Energy…Three Years Ahead of Schedule

We hear a lot of hot air from big corporations and companies about how they plan on doing wonderful things for the environment, but a lot of it just seems to go nowhere. That’s why what LEGO has accomplished is pretty incredible.

The folks at LEGO originally set a goal of 2022 for their production facilities to run completely on renewable energy, but here we are 2019 and the company has already reached its goal, three years early.

The company was able to reach their goal because of the completion of an offshore wind farm that sits in the Irish Sea. The company actually built a giant wind turbine out of 146,00 LEGO pieces to celebrate the great achievement.

Bali Padda, CEO of LEGO Group, said, “We work to leave a positive impact on the planet and I am truly excited about the inauguration of the Burbo Bank Extension wind farm. We will also continue to work to inspire children around the world by engaging them in environmental and social issues.”

LEGO also has a fully-functional wind turbine set with plant-based bricks for kids (and adults) to play with and learn from.

The bottom line is that renewable energy is not only good for the environment but it’s also good for business. We can only hope that other huge companies will take note and follow LEGO’s lead. LEGO has 42 offices around the world and brings in over $2 billion in sales annually in the U.S. alone.

I’d say that’s a pretty good model to follow, wouldn’t you?

Dick’s Sporting Goods CEO Destroyed $5 Million Worth of Assault Weapons After Storewide Ban

The debate over gun control has reached a fever pitch in recent years, but it also feels like not much has been accomplished. You can point the finger in any direction you want to, but it’s a combination of many factors: politicians, big business, the NRA, shareholders, etc.

And as mass shootings continue to plague our country, Americans from all backgrounds grow more and more frustrated at the lack of action on gun legislation.

One CEO of a major company has decided to take a major step to prove that he and his company value human life over profits. Even though it cost his business an estimated $250 million, Dick’s Sporting Goods CEO Ed Stack permanently removed all assault-style rifles from 729 stores in 47 states in the U.S. in February 2018 after the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida.

In addition to that bold move, Ed Stack also recently announced that his company actually destroyed $5 million worth of assault weapons last year after it stopped selling them in stores.

Stack said he had the option to send the weapons back to the manufacturer for an 80%-85% refund or Dick’s could have tried to liquidate their inventory quickly through discounts. Stack recalled, “We’re in this meeting and I said, ‘We can’t do that.’ We think these guns should be outlawed. We think that the ban that was in place between 1994 and 2004 should be reinstated.”

Stack said he knew the weapons would end up out on the street if he chose either of those options, so they decided to destroy all the guns. Many people praised Stack’s decision but of course there was blowback from firearms manufacturers and NRA supporters.

Bravo, Mr. Stack. Let’s see if other CEOs and politicians will follow his lead.

This Is Why Your Sandwich Is Served with a Pickle

If you’re like this guy, you’re not complaining that a delicious dill pickle comes automatically with your deli sandwich.

If you’re like other people, you slide it quickly off your plate and lament all of the places where the vinegar-y juice touched the rest of your food.

No matter how you feel about pickles, you probably don’t know why, exactly, they’ve found their way onto deli plates everywhere – but you’re about to find out.

Pickles themselves have be around (and adored by many) since as far back as 2400 B.C.E. They gained popularity in the States after the first Jewish immigrants found their way to New York from eastern Europe, and as those immigrants opened delis, they offered the pickle as a palate cleanser.

The acidity of the pickle is meant to let you experience the sharp contrast in meat flavors more fully.

As more and more Jewish delis adopted the practice, the pickle’s popularity soared in New York City. By the 1930s, pickle vendors were popping up all over the Lower East Side, inciting “Pickle Wars” among competing vendors.

Once it had taken NYC by storm, the pickle made its way across the States, until now, it’s more common to see a pickle on you deli plate than not. Most delis don’t even list it as a side; people just assume it will be included.

And if it’s not there?

Well, I guess some people will be upset, and others will breathe a sigh of relief. To each his own.

This is still America, after all.

Meet the Guy Who Made the First-Ever Pair of Edible Underwear

You may be wondering: how the heck did edible underwear become a thing? Luckily for you, we’ve got a history lesson on the topic.

It all started with the phrase, “Eat my shorts.”

Edible underwear was invented in the early 1970s by a man named David Sanderson. He was smoking marijuana and drinking wine when he randomly remembered that his older brother used to tell him to “Eat my shorts” when he was being annoying.

David had a lightbulb moment. What if there were shorts that you could actually eat? His partner, Lee Brady, thought it was a great idea, and the rest was history. Candypants, as they called it, was born.

Unlike many other drunk ideas that seem “brilliant” at the time, Candypants was a smashing success. People bought them in droves, and the media buzzed about the risque new item.

This original edible underwear was constructed from a sheet of edible candy, made from sugar, food starch, glycerin and other ingredients. One pair retailed for $4.95.

At this time, they were considered a novelty gift item — not an adult sex toy item, as they are today. Even nunneries and nursing homes ordered Candypants from David and Lee’s new factory!

As business grew, they eventually filled $150,000 of orders every month. They became so wealthy that they bought a mansion and installed a disco.

But people at adult sex stores wanted a piece of that pie, too. Knockoff versions of Candypants became common, and now you can find all manner of edible undergarments at sex stores.

Meanwhile, you can still buy the original version of Candypants on Amazon.

In case you were curious, they reportedly don’t taste very good.
