Tiffany Haddish Helps Out Foster with Donated Suitcases

The past year has made me think a lot about giving back to my community, and I’ve been looking for new ways to help people out.

That’s why I was so verklempt to read about one celebrity who has been giving back in a deeply personal and meaningful way.

Grammy-winning comedienne Tiffany Haddish and her four younger siblings went into the American foster care system when she was just 12 years old.

As she told David Letterman:

“You’re dropped in these strangers’ houses, you don’t know these people, these people don’t know you, you don’t know if they’re gonna hurt you, if they’re gonna be kind, you don’t have a clue what’s going on.”

What always stuck with Haddish about making the foster care experience extra difficult was that when children are moved from home to home, they’re handed a garbage back to pack up their things.

It made her feel like garbage.

And then one day, in a small way, someone made a huge difference in her life.

Instead of a garbage bag, they gave her a suitcase. Now Haddish felt:

“Like I had a purpose, like I’m a person like I’m not garbage, I got this — it’s mine, and my things are in here, and wherever I go I can take this with me and I’m going somewhere.”

For years, Haddish had encouraged her fans to bring suitcases to her shows and donate them to foster children, including the Beech Brooke organization of Cleveland, Ohio:

And The Villages of Indiana:

These are just some of the over 95 suitcases donated from last week’s Tiffany Haddish show in Bloomington. The…

Posted by The Villages – Foster Care, Adoption, & Family Services on Friday, October 4, 2019

After watching her interview with Letterman on Netflix last fall, a foster care specialist from from Lake County, Indiana, Shanell Manuel took note:

Haddish’s point about garbage bags struck a chord with Manuel, who had herself been bothered by the same thing.

As Distractify reported:

“She reached out to Tiffany’s She Ready Foundation, whose mission is to “protect, provide resources, and ensure normalcy for foster children.”

Once again, Haddish came through with 100 suitcases for Indiana foster kids last Christmas.

And her work has inspired other organizations to do suitcase drives in their communities too.

But she’s not finished yet.

As Black Enterprise recently reported, Haddish’s She Ready Foundation has got a new project to help kids who age out of the foster system start careers in the entertainment industry:

The program is supported by Tiffany Haddish’s She Ready Foundation and Ready To Succeed, a Career Accelerator for foster youth, who will provide training, mentorship and ongoing support.”

It’s truly amazing to see someone so dedicated to helping out such a deserving and under-served demographic.

This Thread from an Inuit Person Shows the Incredible Expense of Fresh Food in the Arctic

Pretty much everything seems expensive these days. But what do you do about price gouging?

One Inuit shopper, fed up with the price of fresh foods for sale in the Arctic, took to Twitter, and soon, the thread went Viral.

The thread started in response to vegan lifestyle proponents arguing that the Inuit way of life, which includes a great deal of hunting and fishing, is inherently cruel and unnecessary.

Twitter user @KataraPiujuq responded by laying down some facts about life in the Arctic.

The thread also showed the price tags of many every day food items that most of us take for granted.

First there was bagged lettuce, still $12.99 despite being 50% off.

Fresh broccoli was $16.79 per kilogram. For Americans, that’s around $8.50 per pound.

A carton of fruit juice ranged from $11 to $13 in Nunavut, while red grapes went from a whopping $23.49 per kilogram before subsidy to a no-less-shocking $15.99 per kilogram after subsidy.

One of the most shocking photos showed a watermelon for sale for $70. Granted, it was a 15 lb watermelon, but still. Who can pay that much for a melon?

And a bundle of asparagus might be good for you, but it’s going to cost you $32 per kilogram.

The subsidies seem to help a little bit. A 10 lb bag of russet potatoes went from over $60 down to about $22.

For comparison, though, that same bag of potatoes cost only $3.99 in Toronto.

With that in mind, the subsidies feel like a slap in the face to a shopper on a budget.

And it makes you wonder how much the pre-subsidy prices are inflated, like the “regular” price in a clothing store that always has everything “on sale.”

Comments displayed shock and dismay. On a purely logical level, you might expect food prices to rise in the Arctic due to the expense of transporting them there.

But the actual result is far worse than most people would have imagined.

And while some of the comments devolved into arguments about the virtues of veganism, most people agreed that the Inuit way of life, including hunting and fishing, is a sustainable one that should be allowed to continue.

Unfortunately, a live-and-let-live mentality may not be enough.

But the original poster is one step ahead, promoting charities that help bring equity to this food OASIS.

Turns out, hanging on to one’s traditions and cultures may not only about remembering the past, but a matter of survival.

What do you think about this situation? Are these prices unfair?

When Disasters Happen, Willie Ray’s Is There with Free Barbecue

There’s nothing quite like a feel-good story, right?

Well, here’s one that will make you feel good any day of the week.

Back in August of 2020 when most of us probably first learned that the term “derecho” more or less meant a sustained straight-line wind version of a tornado, most of Cedar Rapids, Iowa was left without power.

That’s when Willie Ray Fairley of Willie Ray’s Q Shack stepped up.

Come on out and try this Brisket Baby it’s
Brisket Friday

Posted by Willie Ray’s Q Shack on Friday, January 8, 2021

The restaurateur saw his friends and neighbors working hard to clean up the city, and he decided to cook up his entire stock and give it away to anyone who needed a hot meal.

As he told the local news station, KCRG:

“I just got my food truck and was ready to start selling, but once the storm hit I thought there might be something better to do with the food.”

Something better indeed.

Willie’s kindness went viral, and soon, people were even donating to his Venmo account to help fund his charitable mission.

“People keep donating, so we’re going to be giving out food for a long time. Even when the storm is over, cleaned up. If there’s still funds left we will continue to give.”

The country began to take notice. He even made MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle’s #GoodNewsRUHLES list.

The local Cedar Rapids community nominated him for a black owned business award from Discover, and he won!

Food can always bring people together. See how Willie Ray’s Q Shack used his $25,000 #EatItForward award to help make a real impact in his Cedar Rapids community. https://youtu.be/HQXQjxm9UAY

They called his work #EatItForward. There’s even a YouTube video:

It’s a really nice award, but Willie hasn’t let it go to his head.

“I would have done all this anyway and never thought anything of it,” he said. “It was how I was raised. It makes me feel good to know that people care.”

But the story doesn’t end there.

A few months later when Texas was rocked by an ice storm causing power outages to thousands, Willie called on volunteers to help him make the trek down from Iowa.

Me and the team is planning on going to Texas to help the needed. By any chance is there a couple volunteers that would…

And then Willie and his team headed to Mississippi to deliver bottled water to those communities, which had been left without water for weeks after the same winter storm.

Willie is a shining example of the good we can do when we pull together as a community, as well as the healing power of food.

This Baby with Down Syndrome Has a Smile That Goes Viral and Makes the Internet a Better Place

There’s nothing quite like a baby’s smile to light up a gloomy day.

Even when a cranky relative claims, “They’re not smiling at you. It’s just gas.”

One new adoptive mom from Texas proved cranky relatives everywhere wrong, when she shared a video of her beautiful little one smiling on cue.

The video, posted to Facebook by the National Down Syndrome Adoption Network, shows 8-month-old “Baby H” lying on a blanket for tummy time.

When her mom asks how her day is going, Baby H smiles up at her.

Mom coos back that she loves her new smile and asks, “Can you show me again?”

After a moment, the little girl obliges, grinning from ear to ear.

Her mom is so tickled that she laughs. “Oh my goodness! I like that new smile.”

Thrilled with the attention, Baby H keeps it up.

As long as mom will laugh, she’ll cheese for the camera.

Children, and babies especially, change and grow so quickly that it’s always a joy to record precious moments for posterity.

This family was not only lucky enough to document their daughter’s sweet smile, but they were willing to share their delight with the rest of the world.

As they told the Daily Mail:

“You can tell by my laughter how much we adore this smile and she actually only smiled like this for a couple of weeks so this video is a treasure for us.”

They decided to share the video, courtesy of the National Down Syndrome Adoption Network, because:

“We hope that all the viewers will see the beauty that lies in people with Down Syndrome. Although a Down Syndrome diagnosis can be scary, the reality is that your child has a purpose and will be able to live a full and happy life.”

The video has amassed more than 300,000 likes and over 38,000 comments on Facebook.

Watch it and see for yourself.

A Girl Shared Her Boyfriend’s Mango Hack and It Went Viral

I’ve only tried to prepare mango a few times. Both times, I had to google what to do with the thing.

I guess it depends where you live, but it seems like everyone struggles just a little over what to do with a mango. That’s why a woman’s TikTok about her boyfriend’s unusual mango hack took social media by storm.

I was taught to cut a sort of grid into the mango and then peel the sin back and scrape the cubes off the skin.

But Katie Feeney’s boyfriend had a different sort of technique.

First, he sliced the mango around the middle, crosswise.

Image credit: Katie Feeney via TikTok

Next, he pried the two sides apart.

Image credit: Katie Feeney via TikTok

As Buzzfeed explained:

Then, he pops out what he calls the “lollipop” center…

Image credit: Katie Feeney via TikTok

After scooping out the inside of each half, he is left with a perfect, delicious mango, ready to eat or cook with.

Image credit: Katie Feeney via TikTok

This method totally blew my mind. Because if you’ve ever eaten a fresh mango, you know how completely frustrating the process of getting that massive seed out of the middle is.

And this guy did it like it was nothing!

A lot of viewers felt the same way.

They really appreciated the clever ingenuity and vowed to try it themselves.

Some even went so far as to describe it as life-altering.

Others, however, were less impressed.

It seems that this is a very common way of preparing a mango in Middle Eastern and Asian cultures.

In fact for some, it was the only way they knew how to eat a mango.

Isn’t it funny how something that seems completely revolutionary to one group of people can be just as mundane to the other?

Take a look at the video, and see what you think for yourself.

Frank Ocean’s Message to His Younger Self Really Inspires

Celebrities usually receive an outpouring of love and best wishes on social media when they celebrate a birthday.

Beloved worldwide for his fresh songwriting talents and alternative R&B tunes, Frank Ocean is no different in that respect.

On October 28, 2020, for his 33rd birthday, Blacks Rule Magazine celebrated the Grammy winner with a little Nostalgia of their own.

Referencing a 2011 Tumblr post where a fan asked Ocean, then 24, what he would say to his 19-year-old self who was just starting out, the tweet received thousands of comments and over 100,000 likes.

Instead of brushing the question aside with a flip reply, Ocean opened up to his fans.

Speaking to his younger self, he revealed that he would change his name, that his heart would get broken more than once, but that despite it all, he would survive and do what he was meant to do.

His words really resonated with fans on Twitter. Many expressed that they were moved to tears by the letter.

Others repeated Ocean’s most profound bits of advice to his younger self.

One user pointed out how his words could be applied to all of life’s struggles:

His pragmatic approach to hanging in there really struck a chord with a lot of people:

Most of all people were moved by the fact that in five short years, he got where he wanted to be.

Inspiring fans with the words you shared 9 years ago? Not a bad way to spend a birthday.

His letter certainly made me teary-eyed. How about you?

Thanks, fam!

A Man Who Gained One Million Followers Overnight Has Been Homeless and Filming From His Car

If you’re a fan of TikTok, have you heard of a guy on there who goes by the handle “Angry Reactions”?

If not, you’re missing out. His real name is Oneya Johnson and he’s become a viral sensation on TikTok. Johnson created the account in late August he incredibly gained one million followers in 24 hours when people caught on to his hilarious personality.

Johnson’s whole schtick on TikTok is just like the name implies: he reacts very angrily to other TikTok users’ content but it’s all meant to be in good fun.

He was evicted by his landlord from his previous home in Michigan where he lived with his ex and he made his way to Lafayette because his brother lives there.

Since then, Johnson has been living in his car.

Shouting matches with his ex were ultimately what got him evicted from his place in Michigan, but Johnson said he and his ex are on good terms now and they share two children together.

Johnson said,

“I basically took how the world sees me, and how I really am, and just matched it together.

If I passed you on the street and I don’t say a word, I look like the angriest person in the world.

But when you actually get to know me, I’m actually a really positive person.”

Keep an eye on this fella and let’s hope he gets back on his feet sooner than later.

And keep enjoying his funny videos!

A Guy Accidentally Ate $420 Worth of Beef

If ever there was a cautionary tale about very carefully reading menus in restaurants, this is it! Because this poor dude thought he was making a frugal decision in ordering, but instead, he wolfed down some insanely high-end beef.

He posted the tale on Reddit’s TIFU (Today I F*cked Up) forum, and y’all… it’s a doozy.

It begins with him and his girlfriend heading to their first real night out in some time, in Atlantic City.

They chose Gordon Ramsey’s because of the outdoor dining option during this Covid-19 time.

He was amazed to see the Kobe beef was cheaper than the Wagyu on the menu, so he ordered 12 ounces of the stuff, which he promptly scarfed down.

His girlfriend also had a lovely meal, they shared some sides and appetizers, as you do.

It turned out that the Japanese A5 Kobe steak was not $35 for 4 ounces, but a $35 minimum purchase (and was $35 per ounce).

Ouch.

Their bill was $600.

Yeah, you read that right… SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS!

His biggest regret was that Gordon himself wasn’t there to make fun of him for his gaff. But I bet he wouldn’t have made fun of him… he would have thanked him!

But also, the server really should have said something when he ordered 12 ounces, don’t you think?

I guess if you gotta spend $420 on a steak, it had better be the best thing you’ve ever eaten – and he says it was!

So there’s that. Ha!

Pancake Cereal is The Latest Viral TikTok Recipe You Might Want to Make

You know about pancakes, one of the most utterly delicious breakfast and brunch foods around. And you’ve heard of cereal, which is similarly tasty and doesn’t require any prep work.

Prepare to have your mind blown. Combine pancakes and cereal to make something totally new and different: Pancake cereal.

TikTokers have been making lots of pancake cereal lately. And it sure seems easy to make.

All you need is some pancake batter, a hot pan and a plastic bag. You’ll fill the plastic bag with the batter, then snip a tiny hole in one corner (so you can use it like a baker’s piping bag).

Simply pipe little blobs of pancake on your pan, cook and voila. You’re all set!

Just pout these miniature pancakes into a bowl, top with butter and syrup and eat with a spoon.

Here’s how it works.

Some TikTokers are skipping the plastic bag and using a squeeze bottle instead, which makes it easier to control your batter. But if you don’t happen to have an empty squeeze bottle laying around, a plastic baggie will work just fine.

Would you ever try making pancake cereal at home? What do you think of this idea?
