Meet the Woman Who Made the Popeyes Chicken Sandwich Go Viral With a Single Tweet

You know you love it…

2019 was the Year of the Popeyes Chicken Sandwich, and it’s all thanks to one genius social strategist: Angela Brown.

The chicken sandwich came out in August of this year and immediately broke the internet. It wasn’t the sandwich itself that really brought the frenzied attention, though. It was one tweet that Popeyes posted in response to a slightly underhanded tweet from Chick-fil-A about their own chicken sandwich.

“…y’all good?” the Popeyes tweet read.

That tweet went massively viral and caused the popularity of the sandwich to shoot into the stratosphere, leading some customers to literally commit crimes just to get their hands on one.

The tweet came from the mind of Angela Brown, who works for GSD&M, the Austin, Texas-based ad agency that worked with Popeyes to market the sandwich.

Angela was named the Daily Dot’s Internet Person of the Year for her work on the marketing campaign, especially that infamous tweet.

The tweet wasn’t part of Angela and her team’s original advertising plan, but it obviously changed the game. So why was it so successful?

It was the perfect two-word zinger, calling Chick-fil-A out without being overly negative. But also, it tapped into the culture and language of “Black Twitter,” one of the most active and influential demographics on the platform.

The success of this tweet speaks to the power of hiring black creatives at ad agencies — and truly giving them a seat at the table.

“There is something unprecedented and incredible about the power that a two-word tweet had to ignite a collective of people who already are extremely creative and extremely loyal—when they want to be loyal to something,” Angela explained to the Daily Dot.

“There’s a lot of things that [as a Black person/woman] I’ll bring to the table that our team will bring to the table that our clients aren’t aware of.”

Popeyes’ success may be unusual, but ultimately, it’s a useful lesson for any company’s social media presence.

These Jokes Would Have Made Absolutely No Sense at the Beginning of the 2010s

We’ve come a long way in the past ten years. It’s hard to keep up with all the technology flying at us. Heck, I’m still trying to figure out the appeal of Twitter.

So, in the spirit of laughing at our ignorant past selves, scroll through these 10 jokes that would have made no sense at all in 2009.

1. We are getting into cars with strangers and asking for rides. In the olden days, this was called hitchhiking and our parents would ground us for doing it.

2. Girls roll out of bed in sweatshirts, pull on short shorts and put their hair in a scrunchie to go out for the day. In the olden days, this is how girls got ready for bed.

3. We are all wearing cool in-ear speakers. In the olden days, we attached entire stereos to our clothing and got tangled up in the wires.

4. Alexa takes care of us. In the olden days, we had to do our own things.

5. “Millennials have ruined the society we’ve worked so hard to build.” In the olden days: “Millennial babies are so cute. They’re our future.”

6. We cannot agree on anything now. ANYTHING. In the olden days, WE WERE PERFECT.

7. We get ready for the day on social media. In the olden days, we got ready for the day in the bathroom. With the door closed.

8. Our watches are computers. In the olden days, our watches told us what time it was.

9. We don’t need to see each other to have a relationship. In the olden days, we went on dates. Together.

10. We spend a la-oht of money on our phones. In the olden days, we counted our money.

Do you feel old now? Or, are you wondering how we crawled out of our mud holes into these modern times? Discuss.

A Teen Got into a Car Accident, Posted a TikTok to “Cope” with the Shock

A lot of us have been in minor car accidents or we at least know someone who has. And it’s not uncommon that a brush with mortality would cause someone to go into a shock for a while – stuff like that is really scary.

16-year-old Katie Cornetti recently found out just how terrifying a car accident can be. And in order to get over her shock, she decided to post a TikTok that went viral soon after.

Cornetti posted a few more videos on the microfilm social media site in the days to come. Luckily, she and her friends didn’t have any life-threatening injuries. The teen told Buzzfeed,

“We saw [the window] shatter and we look at each other, and were like, ‘Are you OK? Are you OK?’ Once we figured out we were all OK, we started laughing. We’re best friends and this is how we coped together.”

The 16-year-old was in the car with two of her friends when the crash occurred. Cornetti’s friend Marissa was driving that day and the car suddenly rolled while they were on a winding road. The culprit was a tire that wasn’t properly secured to the vehicle.

Thankfully everyone was wearing their seat belts and they were fine. Then, Cornetti decided to create a TikTok, which, to her surprise, went super viral.

Some people thought it was funny:

But not everyone on social media was amused.

But Cornetti seems to be coping with her virality just fine:

“The comments are not really bothering me ’cause who does make a TikTok after a car crash?” she asked. “We are perfectly fine, we got really lucky.”

It’s hard to judge what people do after such a stressful event, and the good news is that everyone turned out to be okay.

What do you think of Cornetti and her friends’ TikTok?

The Roaming Charges on Eagles’ GPS Trackers Bankrupt Russian Researcher Team

Now, this is certainly interesting.

Some steppe eagles got into trouble with their researchers for sending text messages that resulted in huge cell phone bills.

Bad, bad birds!

Researchers at the Russian Raptors Research and Conservation Network were studying the steppe eagles to learn more about their summer migratory patterns. To track the eagles, researchers tagged the birds with GPS monitors that would send their locations via text.

The idea was that the eagles would fly around all summer in a virtually cell tower-less region of Kazakhstan, banking up texts of their GPS coordinates that would eventually get sent when they returned to cell service.

So, yes, the plan worked…almost.

The birds spent the majority of their time in the area researchers assumed they would. And the researchers received texts whenever the eagles hit a network in other parts of Kazakhstan and Russia.

What the researchers didn’t anticipate were the odd trips into Iran, where there is oodles of cell phone coverage. Unfortunately, the researchers’ cell phone plan didn’t cover that service.

The eagles weren’t only soaring, they were roaming.

Everyone knows– except steppe eagles, evidently – that sending text messages without an international calling plan is like throwing money out the window.

What do birds think? That money grows on trees?

The researchers were charged about $0.77 per text, at four per bird per day.

In the eagles’ defense, they may have decided to vacay in Iran due to the loss of some of their traditional Kazakh breeding grounds to farmland. At any rate, they literally bankrupted the scientists, who had to turn to social media for fundraising.

Friends and fans of steppe eagles stepped up and covered the birds’ bills (and more) so the research could continue.

Cell phone roaming charges are…for the birds.
