This Is Why Some Siblings Stop Talking to Each Other Due to Family Rivalries

It might sound strange to some folks, but it’s actually not all that uncommon for siblings to become estranged. Reader’s Digest chronicled the story of Hope Rising, a woman who became estranged from her older sister because she grew tired of rude comments. The sisters didn’t speak for 14 years, and only got back in touch because of a serious cancer diagnosis.

Siblings stop communicating for many reasons. Some people eventually become aware that they dislike their sibling. Other times, family dynamics that began in childhood can turn into resentment later in life.

Dysfunction can worsen if there’s an inheritance on the line – or if an aging parent has needs, and siblings have differing opinions about the best ways to meet them.

Cornell University professor Karl Pillemer says that less than 5% of Americans are truly estranged from their siblings. That may seem like a low number, but that’s 1 in every 20 people.

Universities across the country have conducted research to attempt to understand the problem. Oakland University put out a survey that found that 16% of siblings reported having an antagonistic sibling relationship. 19% of those polled said their relationships with siblings were casual.

Remarkably, only 26% of people reported having a supportive relationship with their siblings.

When University of Pittsburgh psychologist Daniel Shaw, who conducts similar research on children’s sibling relationships, went on the radio to discuss his research, he ended up receiving many calls from people who wanted to talk about painful relationships with their siblings. He says,

“Something happened, and they never forgave each other, so now they were calling in … to talk about how they had decided to forgive or how they hadn’t spoken for 20 or 30 years.”

Sibling strife often occurs when people don’t learn how to resolve their conflicts. Or perhaps one sibling becomes obsessed with keeping tabs on the good deeds they do for their sibling, which can wear everyone down.

The key is to learn to manage conflicts and to be sincere about doing favors.

And, yes, if it’s obvious that a certain sibling was the parents’ favorite, there likely will be problems later. But estrangement is often a cause of regret later in life, so learning to deal with these relationships is usually worthwhile for both parties.

Many Parents Have a Favorite Kid – and It’s Often Their Youngest

Your parents may have promised they never played favorites (and you say the same to your kids). But as children grow into adults, I think it’s normal to find that, while you might not have a favorite, some people just get on more easily than others.

That said, there is actually some pretty convincing science behind the idea that parents tend to favor their youngest child more often than their older siblings.

First, let’s go with self confessions from both parents and grandparents. According to The Independent, a Mumsnet survey of both groups did indeed find favoritism among both groups (though with differing preferences).

Of the 1185 parents and 1111 grandparents who responded, 23% of parents and 42% of grandparents admitted to having a favorite. But while 56% of the committed parents said their youngest was their favorite, 40% of grandparents prefer their eldest grandchild.

Half of the survey responders thought having a favorite was “awful” and potentially damaging for the favorite child’s siblings, as well.

In studies that are more scientifically rigorous, similar biases have emerged.

This one revealed that 70% of fathers and 74% of mothers admitted to showing favoritism, but youngest kids don’t always feel the most loved. Another study, done in 2005, found that oldest children tend to feel like they’re the favorite (even if that’s perhaps not true), and that younger children typically feel as if their parents are biased toward their older sibling.

And this 2017 study found that when the younger child feels as if favoritism plays a role in their household, they were much more affected by it than older siblings (whether for better, if they were the favorite, or worse, if they were not), while older children’s relationships with their parents were not affected regardless of who the perceived “favorite” child was in the house.

BYU professor Alex Jensen, though, noted that how you show favoritism plays a role, too.

“When parents are more loving, and they’re more supportive and consistent with all of the kids, the favoritism tends to not matter as much… you need to treat them fairly, but not equally.”

Perhaps the most important outcome is from this 2006 study, which suggests the best thing to do (as a kid) is just to not let it bother you – research suggests you can’t change it no matter what you do, and that mothers, especially, rarely switch up their favorite child over the course of their lives.

So, oldest or youngest or middle child – be yourself, and know that even if they don’t love you the most, your parents still love you a whole lot.

And that should count for something, right?

People Share the Times They Were Savaged by Their Parents and Family

Writer Alanna Bennett’s mom savaged her and she just had to share the shame on Twitter…

Ouch.

And that memory has apparently never gone away.

Once Alanna shared, you know other people wanted to jump in on the fun.

Like Julia’s dad and his hush money…

Or Alan’s “gift”…

Rita’s dad doesn’t know how to refer to breasts correctly…

And Leigh’s dad is kind of a dick…

Oh look! Another fun daddy/daughter exchange!

These parents are apparently SO proud!

This dad had a solution for his picky eater…

Oh hai cats!

Sometimes, siblings can make up for the savageness that parents can’t supply…

Or best friends!

What are some savage moments your friends and family destroyed you with?

Personally, I have none. Me and my family always get along great and we support each other in everything we do. Always.

And if you believe that…

A Study Showed That Younger Siblings Are Funnier Than Older Siblings

I have three older siblings and guess who’s the King of Comedy? This guy, right here. So I’ve known this all along. But now there’s science to back it up!

A British study from YouGov questioned 1,783 adults to assess various personality traits based on birth order. The survey showed that 46% of younger siblings believe that they are the funniest child in their family, while only 36% of oldest siblings report that they are the family clown.

The study also showed that 54% of oldest children believe they bear the most responsibility, compared to 31% of youngest kids. So not only do the young ones get to be hilarious, they also don’t have to worry about as much. Well, isn’t that great?

Some more findings: older siblings feel “more organized” than their little brothers and sisters, and young siblings see themselves as more easygoing than their older counterparts. That makes sense. Again, the younger ones typically don’t have to worry about things compared to the older kids.

A lot of successful comedians just so happen to be the youngest kids in their respective families: Eddie Murphy, Ellen DeGeneres, Jim Carrey, and Steve Martin, to name a few.

What do you think? How does it work in your family?

Long-Lost Dog Siblings Reunite, and They Recognize Each Other Instantly

Adopting a dog is awesome, but the one drawback is that you don’t often know much about where the dog came from. Shelters might tell you about the dog’s temperament or a little about its past, but they won’t know things like what siblings your dog might have floating around out there.

That’s what makes these stories so special – against ridiculous odds, these dogs who once knew each other were somehow reunited. And, thankfully, their owners were able to capture the moment on camera.
