Ex-Prisoners Talk About the Most Evil People They Encountered Behind Bars

I think going to prison would be the most terrifying experience imaginable.

Being locked up with murderers, rapists, and all kinds of other violent offenders has to do so much damage to a person’s psyche. Let’s hope that all of us (or at least most of us) never have to go through that.

AskReddit users shared their stories from when they did time.

1. Can’t forget it.

“The words “I shot that bitch in the stomach and I hope they both die” were used in reference to a 15 year old pregnant girl.

I won’t ever be able to forget that one.”

2. A simple farm boy.

“When I was in the outbox the day before I was released I was hanging out with a bunch of guys just killing time.

One of them was part of a killing gang. They kidnapped and killed a bunch of people for body parts. And cut them off while the people were alive. It was a pretty gruesome case.

Anyways, he was really quiet and rather stupid. Just a simple farm boy type.”

3. Seemed nice enough…

“English guy here, I spent 4 and a half months in prison in 2018. There was a guy who was really nice, seemed like a genuine guy.

That was until I found out her strangled his drunk wife to death and left her there whilst he went to work the next morning.”

4. The Aurora movie theater shooter.

“Before I got my prison sentence in 2013 I was in Arapahoe County jail with James Holmes. Was pretty crazy cuz they’d put the whole facility on lockdown to move him, Even though he was in segregation.”

5. Not an inmate.

“There was a correctional officer at least 6’5 and well built and he would always come in pissed off. So one morning we are waiting in line for breakfast and he thought he heard this older man call him a bitch. He followed the man back to his cell and started teeing off on him.

The man didn’t even try fighting back and when he fell the first time he split his head open on the steel bunk. The inmate was so out of it he started asking were his car keys and wallet went while he was on the ground bleeding. The C.O. hears the man and for some reason turns around and goes back and hits him a few more times and says “who’s the bitch now…”.

I’ll never forget thinking ‘damn this is somebodies father’.”

6. OH MY GOD.

“One of the women on my wing cut up her lover and put his body parts in an empty TV box, then put the box on his mother’s door step.”

7. This is brutal.

“I was in and out juvy from 15-18 till I went to county jail, the worst people I came into contact was a boy 15 who shot his step mother, slit her throat, beat her head in with a blunt object, wrapped her in sheets for the fathers roommate to find her then he shot him. Happened in McMinnville Oregon. Other than that a lot of people raping siblings, and making threats to shoot up the high schools in the area. That’s Yamhill County for you.

8. Women’s prison.

“I was locked up with Jodi Arias, so that was bizarre.

There was also a woman who murdered her baby and kept it in the freezer. We called her Maytag.”

9. No remorse.

“This rich kid stabbed his friend in the chest, killing him, but he was on Xanax and weed at the time and doesn’t remember anything of it other than his friend on the floor dying, the mad thing is this guy (18 years old) actually got off with the murder and found not guilty although was sent down for just under 2 years for possession of a knife. His parents were quite wealthy and it was a big case in the UK. Basically his barristers were the best money could buy and he said that’s how he got off.

He didnt have any remorse for his actions. Which was made to think made him a pretty fucked up person. It’s a funny one though because he actually seemed a nice guy until he would talk about the killing and just didnt care what he had done. Nobody else in the prison had ever killed anyone to my knowledge, as it was a lower cat prison – but he was only their for possession of an knife.”

10. All kinds of psychos.

“I was incarcerated with over 280 people doing life without parole. There were all kinds- Stabbed the neighbor lady 150+ times, shot a bully in the head in the school parking lot, beat a dude with a hammer, etc.

There were two that stuck with me though- one where he looked me right in the eye and told me about shooting a guy with a shotgun to the chest (creeped me the f out), weirdo that kidnapped and killed some girl in his basement was another. John Wayne Gacy actually designed the miniature golf course there.”

11. 99 to life.

“Was in prison for 27 months. Unfortunately, your child rapists and kiddie porn guys were mixed in to gen pop, so you would get all kinds like that everywhere. The worst one I heard of was when I was in military prison. Details are foggy because this was 13 years ago, but I remember there being a guy who got 99 years for murder.

He had killed a guy, then killed the guys wife because she was home and would have been a witness, but not before raping her first. The whole facility got locked down every time they moved this guy, because they didnt even want the other inmates to see what he looked like.

The other fucked up one was at the same facility. So in the army there’s a thing called turtlefucking, where you hit someone’s kevlar helmet with your kevlar helmet. It makes a loud THONK sound, but doesnt really hurt. People didnt hit super hard, just hard enough to make the noise happen. This guy turtlefucked a girl when she wasnt wearing a kevlar helmet. She ended up dying while the guy was still awaiting his trial, and he went full on cuckoo bananas.”

12. KKK member.

“I had a cellie in prison who was a KKK “white boy.” He was a mad man. He was always pissed off and would say the craziest stuff like “Did you hear that? The “white” rhino is going extinct. Fucking jews.”

I was watching the movie about black pilots in WWII and he sat down indignant and rolled his eyes and guffawed… “Black Pilots!?! C’mon.” I said “You really think there are no black pilots?” He said “Hell no, have you ever seen a black pilot?” It was like this every day until my move finally got approved.”

13. From an officer’s perspective.

“I wasn’t an inmate, I was an officer so my opinion might be disqualified. But at a facility I worked at we were a level 5 which is maximum security. Lots of people who had life without parole and just a bunch of different things happened. One guy was on a documentary because he traveled across several states and killed around 5 people total. He was pissed cause the documentary blamed him but he always tried to say his father hitting him as a child made him kill these people.

Then there’s the old guy who raped his young grandchildren and was furious that he was sent to prison cause they were HIS grandkids so he could do whatever he wanted. He had also raped his children when they were growing up.

Lots of sick things in a max security prison and those would be nothing when compared to a federal supermax.”

14. Sounds like a nightmare.

“Ahh.. theres different degrees to evil.. one of the smallest black guys in there was SO loud and would not stop talking. He eventually freaked out and cut his body up with a razor blade to get medical attention for a different scene.. another guy was young, got beat by a 70 yr. Old in dominoes. The young guy just straight punched the old man in the forehead, I was reading Marley and me, and it just sounded like someone hit a watermelon super hard. I looked up, old man was knocked out on the floor, when he came to, these other 18 yr old kids were cracking up laughing and the old man was sooo confused and kept asking why are you laughing?

A white guy who was small and young was the jack russell terrier of the pod, and he was the worst. He would just constantly steal and for some reason nobody did anything about it. Guy named nick looked just like mike Tyson and would fight white ppl who would work out bc they were doing it wrong..he would also stare at you while you were taking a shit.

There was one corrections officer who assaulted me in a bathroom during work duty bc I didnt know if a roll of toilet paper should be changed out.. there was like a 1/3 left. It was my first day, he thought I was fucking with him. After he hit me and was done, I said Sooooo, does it need to be changed i still dont know. He figured out I was serious and apologized. One CO always snuck me coffee and let me watch football on tv bc I was nice and worked hard.”

15. In the Bronx.

“Was in Spofford Juvenile detention center when I was 13 (not a good age to be there at 4’9 100 lbs) and I was one of two Caucasian’s in the entire place so I mostly kept to myself. I did befriend a kid named Chris Whitehead who showed up with a freshly healed scar about 15-20 inches long in the shape of a C on the side of his head. He didn’t talk much but he ended up telling me how it happened when I finally got the nerve to ask him.

Told me his older brother jumped him into the Crips and since he cried during he took a hot knife and burned it into his head for the disrespect. Then he had his little brother, the same age as me by the way, shoot the first person to cross the street in their neighborhood, who ended up being a young pregnant girl. How he only ended up at Spofford is beyond me but it was disgusting to see such a nice kid end up there because of his older piece of shit brother.

I remember when he went to court he was sure he’d be transferred so he pissed all over his jump suit and stuffed it in the radiator causing all of us in the semi violent block to be moved upstairs with the actual violent criminals (I think the kid I’m referring to was only on mine because of his age). The staff members there gave everyone there permission to beat the living shit out of him when he came back but he never did because he got transferred thankfully because his brother ended up there too and was fully on board with the beat down his brother was going to receive.

Really glad they shut down that place because they were running drugs and a prostitution ring on the female side and the treatment of the kids there was disgusting to say the least.”

Yikes. Prison is no place for this guy, I can tell you that much.

Have you ever spent any time behind bars or maybe a friend or family member did some time?

If so, tell us what it was like in the comments. We’d love to hear about your experiences!

Books That People Claim Traumatized Them for Life

I love a creepy book – the more disturbing, the better. And I’m talking about true crime or fiction. Whatever makes me want to check under my bed at night is good in my book!

People shared the books that have totally traumatized them for life. Let’s see what they had to say!

1. A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery O’Connor

“This is a short story, but it messed me up so bad. It’s about a family on a road trip that goes downhill and…it just gets so bad. Like, so bad. You have no idea where the story is going because it’s just like, ‘Oh, a sweet family of a mom and dad, their two kids and a baby, and the grandma who’s going a little crazy with old age!’ And then the story takes a hard left turn into Nopeville, USA and never leaves.”

2. Go Ask Alice by Anonymous

“When I read it, it changed my life. It was so horrifying and uncomfortable, yet beautiful in a tragic way. The book is more effective than any ‘Just Say No to Drugs’ class ever.”

3. Clay’s Ark by Octavia E. Butler

“I couldn’t sleep for days after I read it. It’s part of a series called The Patternist and it’s set in a dystopian future. A father and his twin daughters get kidnapped by a man who’s been infected with an alien organism that compels him to infect as many people as possible. Most die from the infection, but the people who survive turn into these creepy cat-like beings. I love cats, but damn…this book made me avoid mine for a while.”

4. The Collector by John Fowles

“This deserves a spot on this list…that’s all I’m going to say.”

5. Zoe Letting Go by Nora Price

“It’s about a girl who’s checked into a facility for a severe eating disorder and writing letters to her best friend back at home…or so she thinks. The subject matter, the unreliable narrator, and the twist at the end all make this book jarring and highly disturbing. A genuinely difficult read.”

6. Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate

“This is the one book I’ve read that I can’t get out of my mind. While it’s not meant to be a horror or thriller novel, it’s haunted me more than any ‘scary’ book I’ve read.”

7. Lullaby by Chuck Palahniuk

“I’m a big Palahniuk fan and I gotta say this is one of my favorites. It’s about a song that kills people, and it gets really dark REALLY fast. His writing style leaves the reader feeling intrigued and it is truly amazing.”

8. A Short Stay in Hell by Stephen L. Peck

“It is, simply put, the most disturbing book that I have encountered.”

9. The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

“I read this in a few hours because I couldn’t put it down. Once I finished, I couldn’t read anything for a week or so since the incredible twist shook me so bad. I would highly recommend for anyone who likes a good mind-fuck.”

10. If You Tell by Gregg Olsen

“I just finished this one. It’s a true story about a woman who tortures her own family and friends. Somehow I missed the ‘true story’ part when I first started reading, and I couldn’t wrap my head around someone writing fiction that was so depraved…only to find out it was true.”

I need to add some of these to my reading list!

15 Creepy Mysteries That Might Never Be Solved

There are so many unsolved mysteries out there that it can be hard to keep up with them. Luckily, we have online forums where people fill us in on the creepy tales and stories we should read up on if we want to scare the sh*t out of each other.

Here are 15 scary unsolved mysteries that might never be solved. Click on the links in the titles to read more about these topics.

These answers come to us from the Buzzfeed Community.

1. The disappearance of Bobby Dunbar.

“I just find it crazy that we’ll never quite know if the kid who was returned to the Dunbars was really their son or the son of another woman who they won against in court. If that wasn’t Bobby, what happened to Bobby? And if it was Bobby, why did he seem so confused about it?”

2. The Somerton Man.

“The dude from Australia! The Somerton Man! He was found on the beach, dead. All signs pointed to poisoning but they didn’t find anything in the tox report. All the tags in his clothes were cut out, there was no way of identifying him. Then they found a line from a book in his pocket or something. They say he could have been a spy but we’ll probably never know.”

3. The Yuba County Five.

“Five young men went missing in California after seemingly being chased up a mountain in their car. Months later, four of their five bodies were found malnourished, but the fifth has never been found. People think since the men were mentally challenged they were targeted or that the 5th man murdered them, but that theory seems unlikely.”

4. The death of Rebecca Zahau.

“She was found bound and hanged naked off the balcony of her boyfriend’s beachside mansion. There was a mysterious message written in black paint on her bedroom door reading, “She saved him. Can you save her?”

5. The death of the Black Dahlia.

“This one is obviously super well known but the fact that no one knows who the killer is is wild and what was done to her was so brutal and creepy.”

6. The disappearance of Timmothy Pitzen.

“Everyone needs to read this case, it is nuts. Amy Fry-Pitzen checked her 6-year-old son out of school and three days later her body was found in a hotel where she had died of apparent suicide. A note was found next to her saying that Timmothy was safe with people who would care for him and he would never be found. They have never been able to find him, or any remains of him.”

7. Australia’s Mr. Cruel.

“Many people have seen the police sketch of the modified balaclava that he wore in one of the kidnappings (the one with white stitches to conceal any potential identifying markers — super creepy!), but his crime spree and its sudden stop is haunting. Its unsolved nature adds more to its overall creepiness.”

8. The 1962 Alcatraz prison break.

“Along with their friend Allen West, they planned to dig a hole using spoons into their cell walls and climb up the walls onto the roof. Using loads of raincoats they also planned to take all their belongings and make a raft and swim away. West never made it as his hole was too small, but the others have still not been found. There are many weird things involved in this story — someone claiming to be Clarence wrote a letter to the police a few years back stating he is alive and that he would tell them where he is if they didn’t arrest him and that the other two have died.”

9. The Lane Bryant murders.

“It happened on a Saturday morning in the southern suburbs of Chicago. A person walked into the store, held people hostage for a short time, and murdered everyone in there. The person got away and was never found. A manager, who wasn’t even scheduled to come in that day, called 911 and just said, ‘Lane Bryant, hurry.’ One person survived the shooting but the person has not been identified. They’re not even sure if the killer was a man or a woman. The 911 call is super chilling.”

10. The disappearance of Susy Tomassi.

“Susy was 73 years old with slight dementia. She owned a restaurant called The Quilted Giraffe with her husband and was known for walking from the restaurant to other stores. One day, she was seen on camera walking away from her restaurant and literally just vanished. Nobody knows what happened. They recently released a video of a person they believe to be Susy, walking through some store alleys and getting into a white pickup truck the exact time she went missing.”

11. The death of Gareth Williams.

“The spy in the duffel bag. His naked remains were found in a duffel bag, padlocked from the outside, in the bath of a safe house. No forensic evidence was found that pointed towards it being an accident, and the key to the padlock was found underneath his body. The official cause of death was ‘probably an accident’ but a KGB agent claims he was killed by the Russian SVR.”

12. The fate of the Sodder children.

“The whole case is quite the rabbit hole with so many lies and cover-ups and unanswered questions. Someone out there has answers! It’s been over 70 years, so if the children survived, they’ve probably passed on now. But I’m still so curious about what happened!”

13. The incident at Dyatlov Pass.

“Nine experienced trekkers were found dead. There was no sign of foul play, but most of them were missing clothes, some of them had extreme injuries, and the tents were ripped open from the inside. It happened over 50 years ago and to this day is still unsolved!”

14. The death of JonBenét Ramsey.

“ARE WE EVER GOING TO FIND OUT WHO DID IT?! Did the mom write the ransom? Why was the random note written at the house? Why did JonBenét have pineapple in her stomach? Who gave her the pineapple? How did the DNA on her clothing get there, who does the DNA belong to? Was she being abused? WHY DOES HER BROTHER SOUND SO CREEPY AND WHY DOES HE SMILE SO MUCH?! Someone in that family is guilty of something. Darnit! It still keeps me up at night.”

15. The disappearance of Amy Bradley.

“She disappeared on a cruise ship and there were rumors that she was trafficked. They found a photo of a really similar looking woman on an escort site!”

People Share the Horror Movies That Fully Traumatized Them…Let’s Take a Look

When I was 8-years-old, I stayed home sick from school and was all alone in the house. My older brother had rented a movie the night before, so I decided to spend my sick day watching The Evil Dead

Oh boy.

It totally traumatized me but also gave me a love for horror movies that continues to this day.

People shared what scary flicks traumatized them and left a lasting impression. These responses come to us from the Buzzfeed Community.

Let’s see yours in the comments!

1. Burnt Offerings (1976)

“It’s this movie from the late ’70s that no one’s ever heard of for some reason. It’s basically about a family rents a large estate one summer and a whole lot of weirdness goes down. It will mess you up for life.”

2. Evil Dead (2013)

“This remake was so terrifying that I couldn’t finish watching it the first time. It took me a whole year to gather up the courage to try watching it again.”

3. The Hitcher (1986)

“It’s been way too long since I’ve seen this, but it still terrifies the crap out of me!”

4. Night of the Living Dead (1968)

“My grandmother had 80 acres in the middle of nowhere in Wisconsin. I saw this movie when I was 5 or 6 years old and was terrified to sleep in that house at night because it seemed like the perfect setting for those zombies. It still creeps me out.”

5. Tusk (2014)

“I thought it sounded like a funny premise, but it kept me up the whole night and bothered me for weeks. I’ve watched a lot of horror movies. I don’t know what it is about this one, but it absolutely haunted me.”

6. Child’s Play (1988)

“I was nine and Chucky somehow reminded me of my American girl doll. I had to put her away in my closet every night so that she wouldn’t stare at me with her huge eyes and buck teeth trying to plot my death while I slept.”

7. Arachnophobia (1990)

“I watched this when I was a kid and I haven’t had a worry-free shower in 16 years.”

8. The Descent (2006)

“This is the most disturbing, gory, hopeless movie ever made. I legitimately wish I could erase it from my brain.”

9. Phantasm (1979)

“I saw it when I was about eight and — although I had already seen other horror movies because my parents were huge horror fans — this movie was the only one to give me nightmares. To this very day I get apprehensive around undertakers, especially if they are tall and wearing a dark suit.”

10. Hereditary (2018)

“I went and saw a late night showing of this with a friend, knowing absolutely nothing about the film. Then, when the trailers for new movies started playing and they were all scary movie trailers, I knew that we were in for a ride. We were terrified!”

11. The Witch (2013)

“I watched this one night randomly at 3 AM because I couldn’t sleep and I love witch movies. It scared the heck out of me! It reminded me of the movie The Village, but scarier. It seemed so real. I will never watch it again!”

12. I Spit on Your Grave (1978)

“I can deal with a ton of violence and gore, but Lord, the sadism in that movie was off the charts.”

13. The Entity (1982)

“If you haven’t seen it, be thankful. I saw this when I was 10 and it is no less disturbing to me in my 40’s. Most horror movies nowadays don’t bother me, but maybe it’s because this one desensitized me.”

14. Funny Games (1997)

“You can’t make a list about movies that mess you up without mentioning this one. My friend and I watched the original German version. I thought I was going to throw up and made my friends turn it off.”

15. The Strangers (2008)

“This should definitely be on this list. I watched it back when it first came out and — to this day — I won’t answer the door if I’m home alone (unless I’ve ordered food, of course).”

15 Disturbing Books That Scared the Hell out of People

A genuinely scary book is hard to find. A lot of the ones that are marketed as being “truly terrifying” turn out to be anything but that…and that’s always a big disappointment.

But I think these books might surprise you.

People shared the creepiest books they’ve ever read – the ones that truly scared them – and I think I need to add these to my list.

Let’s take a look…and don’t forget to share the books that traumatized you most in the comments, please!

1. I’m Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid

“A girl is taking a trip with her boyfriend to meet his parents and is thinking about ending their relationship. You’re terrified the whole time you’re reading it. You’re not even sure why you are so uneasy. Everything is NOT as it seems, and the end hits you HARD. I always recommend this book with a strong warning — you have to like thrillers/horror — but I can never say much more about it because it’s so easy to spoil.”

2. The Trial by Franz Kafka

“It’s upsetting in the sense that it could very much happen to you, or so it made me think. The despair of one individual against a senseless administrative crushing machine is overwhelming.”

3. We Need To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver

“The movie is good, but doesn’t capture the experience of reading the book. It’s far more impactful as a novel. It’s about a kid who commits a mass school shooting, told after the fact as a series of letters from the kid’s mom to his dad, recounting raising the kid. The narrator is unreliable and you take a journey alongside her trying to examine if her memories are the full story or not. It’s brutal, shocking, terrifying, and heart wrenching. It was sob out loud painful for me to read and I don’t even have children.”

4. The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum

“It’s loosely based on a real story. Two teenage girls are left in the care of their aunt, who is an alcoholic single mother with three sons of her own. She gets her sons and all the neighborhood kids to torture one of them to death over several months, and none of them told their parents or the police — including the girl — because the woman threatened to kill her little sister if she did.”

5. Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

“It’s about a WWI solider who goes off to war, only to be caught in a canon blast. He wakes up in a hospital unable to speak OR hear. His mouth was completely blown off as well as his ears, eyes, arms, and legs…but his mind functions perfectly. He has no way to tell the nurse that he is awake and no way to communicate that he wants to die. He can only hit his head on his bed in Morse code. It’s truly horrifying, especially since it’s told from his perspective. I only read it once when I was 15…I’m 27 now, and it still sticks with me.”

6. The King in Yellow by Robert W. Chambers

“It’s a series of short stories that refer to a fictional play called The King in Yellow that makes its readers go insane. It’s extremely creepy and frightening in an usual way. You learn almost nothing about the play, but what you do learn is extremely scary. I think it’s also so scary because it was written in 1895.”

7. The Road by Cormac McCarthy

“It’s pretty fucked up. You think it’s going to be like a normal book with a climax and eventual happy-ish ending. NOPE. It just gets more and more depressing as it continues, and ends on an incredibly depressing note. I felt like shit for a week after finishing it.”

8. The Cement Garden by Ian McEwan

“To tell you what’s disturbing would give away the entire book. Suffice to say, it wrecked me, and I’ve never read anything so messed up in my life.”

9. I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream by Harlan Ellison

“It’s not a book, but a short story within a larger collection. It’s excellent, yet disturbing. I can’t really explain it, but you can find a decent summary on the Wikipedia page. I cannot recommend it highly enough.”

10. Lolita by Vladamir Nabokov

“This one for sure made me feel pretty messed up, less because of the content (which, for the most part, isn’t terribly explicit), but because of the way Nabokov uses Humbert Humbert as an unreliable narrator. It seems like he’s is recusing himself throughout the book, to the point that you find yourself feeling subconsciously sorry for him at points before realizing, “Wait, hold up, I need to stop sympathizing with a child rapist…”

11. The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks

“It’s about a psychotic, depressed, misogynistic teenager who lives with his alcoholic father in a relatively unpopulated island. He spends his time with his makeshift weapons, killing local animals, while awaiting his even-more-disturbed brother’s return home. The title alludes to a machine built by the main character. It’s a large clock contraption that kills the wasps he places inside with different traps depending on which direction they crawl. He believes that it can predict the future. The entire book is disturbing from start to finish.”

12. American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis

“It is truly horrifying. If you’ve seen the movie…you literally don’t know the half of it. The gore and brutality is so minutely and exquisitely detailed, I actually had to put the book down at times to fathom what I had just read.”

13. Out by Natsuo Kirino

“The gist of it is that it’s a story about four women who work the graveyard shift at a boxed lunch factory. They all have incredibly hard lives, and one of them snaps and murders her husband. She then, somehow, convinces the others to be complicit in helping her cover it up, which leads to a lot of law enforcement involvement, infighting, and blackmail.”

14. Zombie by Joyce Carol Oates

“It’s fiction, but it’s based on Jeffrey Dahmer. I didn’t realize that when I chose it off a list for a high school psychology project. I just chose it based on the title because I was big into the zombie craze at the time. it ended up getting a bit more than I bargained for, and it took me a while to shake it.”

15. Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk

“I had never heard of the author before, and I had never heard anything about this book. I am ashamed to admit I got it because the book cover glowed in the dark, and 16-year-old me thought that was amazing! It’s a nightmare of a book. The main story still leaves me uncomfortable, as did the free verse poems tying then all together. It’s just…a very uncomfortable read.”

People Share What They Think Are the Toxic Ideas Spread on Reddit

Reddit can be a good site to connect with people and to learn about different topics, but let’s face the facts: there are a lot of people out there with dangerous ideas that spread like wildfire on the Internet.

That’s why it’s important to find your news from reputable sources…which can definitely be hard to do these days.

Folks on AskReddit shared what they think are the toxic and potentially dangerous ideas and beliefs that people share on Reddit. Share your thoughts in the comments.

1. Deviating from the norm.

“Absolutely hating on those that deviate from the norm. Hating on people that conform to society’s norms but not Reddit’s norms. Hating on people trying to have fun or hobbies.”

2. Pure selfishness.

“Glorification of selfishness. I get the impression a ton of people on this site have difficulty asserting themselves, or recognizing or setting their own boundaries, because Reddit is full of advice geared toward people with these problems.

What these posters seem to forget is that not everyone is codependent with self-esteem through the floor. And yet anytime anyone wants to get out of something that someone else wants them to do, Reddit leaps to “no is a complete sentence! Put yourself first! Don’t JADE!” In real life though, maintaining healthy relationships requires sometimes doing things you aren’t thrilled about for others’ sake.”

3. Let’s see the proof.

“Reddit is very much “Guilty until proven innocent”.

They will jump straight down the throat of any alleged criminal with 0 facts, 0 context, and demand they be sentenced to years behind bars, or worse.”

4. Quick to judge.

“Reddit has a tendency to label people “toxic” and encourage relationship advice that isn’t great.”

5. That’s bizarre.

“Worshipping celebrities. 10 year olds don’t need to receive death threats because he’s never heard of a 55 year old actor.”

6. Hostile to the facts.

“Reddit is extremely hostile to actual expertise. If you state outright “I do this professionally and you are wrong” it will send people into an impotent rage. If you don’t say so, they will smugly keep missing the point. There really is no good way to try to correct misconceptions or bad information.”

7. Amen to this one.

“To an extent, Reddit plays a role in the growing anti-intellectualism. There seems to be a large assumption that this is a website of experts and lengthy replies must be credible. I saw a fellow redditor describe it perfectly, “you finally realize how little most redditors know when they start talking about a topic you happen to be well researched in”.

I see this in two places primarily, topics about public education (I am a middle school teacher) and topics such as anti-vaccine. I understand reddit hates anti-vax for good reason, but it is also stuck in the old “anti-vaxxers are just stupid” stereotype. Instead of educating and helping the problem, they just poke fun. This unfortunately drives more anxious parents toward anti-vax communities. A little empathy, understanding, and education would do more to combat ideologies such as anti-vaccines than anything reddit actually does.”

8. Does that mean you can do whatever you want?

“Those people who make introversion out to be an excuse for some pretty terrible antisocial/misanthropic/unacceptable behavior.

I don’t like loud spaces and can feel overwhelmed by crowds of people; I would pay not to go to a concert. I also genuinely love the people in my life and will always make time for anyone who needs me. In my experience this is true for everyone extroverts and introverts alike.”

9. Don’t take this advice.

“Everyone is an armchair psychologist. You post about feeling sad sometimes and inevitably someone is like “thats because you have atypical depression and bipolar disorder” or whatever.”

10. Come on Reddit…

“One example of this….a medical doctor posts a well written comment about the dangers of over prescribing anti biotics. Top comment of the thread. Tons of awards. Later a 2nd year med student posts a similar comment. Still well written but maybe misses a few key points specifying how and why. Again…top comment of the thread. Gilded to the nines.

Later a college freshman bio major writes a pretty bad summary of the situation but it’s part of the Reddit hive mind echo chamber so anyone who bothers to correct him gets misinterpreted and downvoted. And so on and so on until someone LITERALLY TELLS ME they read on Reddit that taking antibiotics is dangerous and will lead to a super disease that will wipe out humanity. Come on Reddit….”

11. Stereotyping.

“Stereotyping, in general, seems rampant. Many comments and posts seem to believe that individuals are incapable of independent thought and just reflect the race/religion/gender/ethnicity/group/nationality/political party/subreddit/culture they belong to.

People are varied even within ideologies. Argue points and issues, not identities.”

12. That’s not good.

“If your partner does anything at all that you dislike, you should dump them, take them to the police, avoid all other partners in the future, etc etc.

Particularly prevalent in Relationships, Relationship Advice, AmITheAsshole and even just AskReddit itself. It’s rather appalling, and it seems to be pushed by people who have no idea what being in a relationship is actually like. It’s not fucking easy basically, you want to love something and be in a completely committed relationship? Prepare to fight for it, because it is not easy.”

13. What about the gray areas?

“Failure to acknowledge any nuance or gray areas. People feel the need to go all in on one side for any issue. I think they feel they’ll look weak or hurt their argument by relenting on any point. Or having a discussion on any point.”

14. Bad advice.

“That whenever someone in your life isn’t behaving perfectly or 100% supporting of you all the freaking time, you need to “cut them out of your life” because they are “abusive” and “toxic”.

I’m curious how many families have been ruined by such destructive advice.”

15. Most people are good people.

“Most Americans I know are nowhere as racist, dumb or fat as reddit makes everyone else think.

A good bunch of them are smart, hardworking people, and are also nowhere as extremist as to be considered far-right, far-left, etc. Reddit might be a huge echo chamber in politics, but, at least the Americans I know, have moderate views and are easy-going people.”

Enjoy These Halloween Skeletons That Are Posed in a Different Situation Every Day

People celebrate Halloween differently. On one end, you have the folks who barely remember to put out a pumpkin on October 31st, and often it’s not even carved into a Jack-o-lantern! On the other end of the spectrum are the people who turn their home into a haunted house, putting in so much time and effort that spectators travel from miles around just to take a look.

And then, there are Bill and Bob. We don’t know their last names or where they live. All we know is that they take Halloween far more seriously than you or I do.

It starts with a few plastic skeletons. Bob and Bill could easily set up their skeletal decorations in a spooky tableau and call it a day. Instead, they pose them in a completely new situation every day. Their neighbor Sami Campoagnano first noticed Bob and Bill’s handiwork and posted it on Twitter, where it promptly went viral.

The scenes are definitely more funny than scary. Almost all of them involve the skeletons in an everyday mundane situation, which makes it even more absurd. (via Bored Panda)

You Can Try to Survive Against Jason from ‘Friday the 13th’ at This Campground in Arizona

Real talk: I need to get out to Arizona immediately to get in on this action. I’m a horror movie fanatic (and a Friday the 13th fan in particular), and this sounds like a total blast…it also sounds pretty terrifying, so double the fun!

A company in Arizona called On Pins and Needles hosts horror-themed events, including one called F13: Survive Jason that challenges guests to survive a night on a campground with the one and only Jason Voorhees.

Posted by F13: Survive Jason on Saturday, September 14, 2019

The event is described like this:

“F13: Survive Jason is a horror fan’s nerd dream. After watching the series, the question inevitably arises: if I was in this situation, could I survive Jason? We all like to think we can. Avoid the horror movie tropes. Run instead of walk. Don’t investigate that sound in the dark. I decided to put that to the test.

The creation of this game is to let people have the experience of testing their mettle against one of the baddest slashers in the genre, Jason Voorhees. In a safe, real world scenario, players get to step into Camp Crystal Lake and attempt to escape from an unstoppable, unkillable force. If you win, you deserve a prize! If you get caught, well…you’re just another Jason victim.

Hopefully your death is memorable. With a fantastic team working to set up, create, and execute, we hope that everyone who participates has the same thrill that we get.”

Does that sound awesome, or what?

Posted by F13: Survive Jason on Monday, August 5, 2019

The upcoming F13: Survive Jason events are scheduled for November 9, November 16, December 13, and December 21 from 6:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m. so you better get going if you want to spend a night trying to outwit (and not get killed by) the legendary Jason.

20 Underrated Horror Movies You Might Want to Watch During Halloween Season

You’ve probably watched most of the classic horror movies that pop up around the Halloween season, but unless you’re a fanatic, you might have missed a bunch of lesser-known creepy movies that offer big scares.

Try these underrated horror movies on for size.

These suggestions come to us from the Buzzfeed community…and I added a couple of my own personal favorites on at the end.

1. 1408 (2007)

“1408 is really good, and the theatrical ending is way better than the original. It’s such an underrated movie.”

2. Funny Games (2007)

“Funny Games should definitely be on this list! It’s so creepy and after seeing it, the sound of a golf ball dropping on a hardwood floor STILL gets to me.”

3. Absentia (2011)

“If you’re looking for low-key, atmospheric horror, here it is.”

4. Trick ‘r Treat (2007)

“I’m a huge horror movie fan, and when I saw Trick ‘r Treat I thought it would be a mediocre horror movie. But boy was I wrong, it’s brilliant! It has a campy feel to it but it was just as intense as most horror movies.”

5. The Evil Dead (1981)

“The Evil Dead is the best cult classic of horror. The effects are campy but creepy as hell and the next two in the trilogy take it to the next level. Seriously, Evil Dead is one of the only horror movies I can watch on repeat. Sam Raimi is a genius.”

6. Contagion (2011)

“I know it’s only rated PG-13, but the most terrifying part about this movie is how realistic it is!”

7. The Fourth Kind (2009)

“It’s about aliens and probably won’t scare everyone who watches it, but it’s definitely the movie that kept me up the longest. I’ve seen the classics, but this one still gives me chills when I think about it.”

8. Cabin Fever 3: Patient Zero (2014)

“It’s an unspoken rule with horror that sequels suck, but Cabin Fever 3 is an exception. It’s gory, intense, clever, and pretty much everything a horror movie should be.”

9. The Mist (2007)

“This movie isn’t scary because of what’s in the mist, but because of how all the survivors turned on each other. That’s what truly scared me the most. Seeing The Mist was also one of the few times I’ve been open-mouth shocked at an ending.”

10. Creep (2004)

“Creep is a British film based in the tunnels of the London Underground. It terrified me when I first saw it and still does now.”

11. A Tale of Two Sisters (2003)

“This movie is brilliantly scary. It’s a South Korean horror film about a girl returning to her family home following a stay in a psychiatric unit. One of the scariest scenes features the main character’s sister hearing a strange noise in the middle of the night and hiding under the covers. Without cutting away from her on the bed, we hear the door open, footsteps towards the bed, then see the blankets pulled down away from her face. It’s honestly terrifying, gorgeously shot, and has such a great twist ending.”

12. Monsters (2010)

“It flew way under the radar and was unfairly brushed off as a poor-man’s Cloverfield, but this is a must-see. This film is a good chronicle of two characters trying to survive something much bigger than themselves, and it really wins during the last half hour. It’s beautiful, scary, and surprisingly thought provoking.”

13. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

“The 1978 version with Donald Sutherland is the creepiest atmospheric sci-fi horror film I’ve ever seen!”

14. Final Destination 3 (2006)

“Everybody needs to see Final Destination 3. The rest are pretty meh, but the third installment totally revolutionizes the horror genre. There’s no movie like it!”

15. Shutter (2004)

“Horror movies don’t scare me too easily, but the one horror movie that seriously freaked me out was The Shutter. This horror movie freaked me and my sister out so much that she couldn’t sleep for a week. I watched it years ago, and the name Natre still freaks me out.”

16. Hide and Seek (2005)

“Hide and Seek with Dakota Fanning and Robert De Niro was such a well thought out movie. The whole thing is really suspenseful and keeps your mind going. It’s a different kind of horror than most and I absolutely loved it. It’s definitely a must see.”

17. Pulse (2006)

“In an era where people are so reliant on technology and Wi-Fi, the movie Pulse really hits you hard.”

18. Dead Silence (2007)

“The movie is a mix of horrifying dolls and unexpected plot twists. I watched it when I was about 13 or 14 and had nightmares for months afterwards. To this day it’s still the scariest movie I’ve ever seen.”

And here are a couple that I recommend…

19. High Tension (2003)

Two friends retreat to the countryside in France and are stalked by a psycho killer hell-bent on killing them and anyone else who gets in his way. Creepy!

20. Angel Heart (1987)

Mickey Rourke plays a 1950s private eye who is hired to track down a singer that disappeared in Times Square after World War II ended. A really creepy, atmospheric film that sees Rourke travel through the seedy underworld of New York and New Orleans.
