You Should Probably Know What These Text Abbreviations Are by Now

A lot of us have been in this situation before: you get a text from a friend or family member and there’s an abbreviation in there that you’ve never seen before. You panic because you don’t want to look clueless or uncool and you act like you know what they’re talking about. Then the conversation takes a strange turn because you just couldn’t be honest and everyone’s day is ruined.

Okay, that may be a little dramatic, but you know what I mean.

I have many moments like this with my 12-year-old niece when I should just own up to the fact that I don’t know what the hell she’s talking about and I need her help because apparently I’m already a senior citizen. But I can’t lose face, so I play this dangerous little game.

So, let’s run down the must-know list of text abbreviations that you really should know by now.

Ready? Go!

1. TFW

“That feel/feeling when…” Okay, I have to admit I didn’t really know about this one until now. We are NOT off to a good start.

2. NBD

“No big deal.” A classic! Believe it or not, people actually used to SAY this to each other when human beings still spoke before smartphones were invented.

3. FOMO

“Fear of missing out.” This describes your friends who can’t miss any of the action. Ever. Even if it’s your Aunt Esther’s 90th birthday party.

4. ICYMI

“In case you missed it.” Simple. Elegant. To the point.

5. FWIW

“For what it’s worth.” Whatever follows this abbreviation might not be something you want to hear.

6. TBH

“To be honest.” Another timeless classic.

7. FTW

“For the win.” I thought this meant “f*ck the world” forever, but now I stand corrected.

8. IDK

“I don’t know.” But you should know this one, okay?

9. SMH

“Shaking my head.” As in, “you’re not gonna believe this and I’m very perplexed.”

10. TLDR

A staple on Reddit, this means “Too long, didn’t read.” Everyone’s in such a hurry these days…

11. IIRC

“If I recall correctly.” Full disclosure: I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen this one out in the wild before.”

12. IRL

“In real life.” A must-have in your texting arsenal.

13. SLAY

“Crushing it” or “killing it.” So not exactly an abbreviation, but important nonetheless.

14. Vaguebooking

Another one that’s not an abbreviation, but you need to know, okay? This term sums up when someone posts something random or vague on social media because they’re obviously looking for likes, comments, and attention. A good example would be “Please pray for me at this tough moment” with absolutely no context at all.

15. LMK

“Let me know.” A huge one! LMK when I should be there. LMK what time dinner is. Etc.

16. OMW

“On my way.” You’re always in a hurry, so you’re always gonna need it.

Meet the Real People Behind 5 Iconic Company Logos

There are images you’ve seen throughout your life repeatedly, but you probably haven’t given them any thought, right? The Gerber baby. The person on the POW/MIA flag.

These are all based on real people, so let’s meet the people behind the icons.

1. The Gerber baby

For a long time, nobody knew the identity of the Gerber baby. It turned out that the adorable little face belongs to Ann Turner Cook, a mystery novelist who is now 92 years old. Cook’s neighbor was artist Dorothy Hope Smith, who sketched her for Gerber.

2. POW/MIA flags

You’ve no doubt seen this flag countless times. Artist Newt Heisley used his son Jeffrey, who was 24 years old at the time, as his model. Jeffrey was home on leave from the Marine Corps officer candidate program and was suffering from hepatitis at the time. His father thought that with his close haircut and gaunt look he would make a good model for the iconic flag.

3. Columbia Pictures logo

28 year old Jenny Joseph modeling for Columbia Pictures’ logo. @doctorow Cool find. The artist who painted her was…

Posted by Boing Boing on Saturday, May 28, 2016

In 1992, Columbia hired Michael Deas to paint the company’s famous logo. Deas interviewed all kinds of models but couldn’t settle on one that he liked. A friend suggested Jenny Joseph, who wasn’t a model, but who instead worked as a graphic artist at The Times-Picayune of New Orleans. Deas found his muse, and it was the first and last time that Jenny Joseph ever modeled.

4. The NBA logo

Who could it be? My first guess was John Stockton, for some reason. But no, it’s actually Jerry West, known as “Mr. Clutch”, who played in the NBA for the Lakers from 1960-1974.

5. KFC

That lovable Colonel Sanders that we all recognize was actually a real person. Colonel Harland David Sanders (1890-1980) sold fried chicken out of his roadside restaurant in Kentucky during the Great Depression. He opened the first KFC franchise in Utah in 1952, and I think you know the rest of the story.

Need a New Fun Summer Game for the Kiddos? Try the Hula Hoop Lasso Challenge.

Here’s a viral Internet challenge with a twist: it’s for the kiddos. And trust us, you’ll want to use this one to wear them out.

The Hula Hoop Lasso Challenge was started by Raising Dragons, a site dedicated to “raising strong, smart, amazing kids.” Andrea, a mother of 4 boys, started blogging about creative and smart ways to entertain your kids, while also teaching them about science, math, and other important things in a fun way.

“I’m always looking for fun ways to entertain the kids outdoors when the weather is nice and this Hula Hoop Lasso Challenge is the perfect game to keep all my kids engaged and moving!”

How does it work?

Andrea states it’s super simple, and we agree. What you’ll need is a few balls, hula hoops, and string. Tie the string to each hula hoop and set out the balls around the yard, within “tossing” distance.

How to play

Each child is given a hula hoop lasso and tosses it toward each ball, capturing it. Once “snagged” they can reel it toward themselves. And voila! The Hula Hoop Lasso Challenge.

Here a quick video!

Hula Hoop Lasso Challenge – Fun Outdoor Kids Activity

Hula Hoop Lasso Challenge ? ages 3+ ? This fun, outdoor game is so simple to set up and is so much fun to play!! Full details >> https://www.raisingdragons.com/hula-hoop-lasso-challenge/

Posted by Raising Dragons – Activities For Kids on Wednesday, July 24, 2019

But what about the “challenge” part?

Easy. You can make this game competitive by having each child try to capture as many balls as possible. They can even play on teams to see which one captures the balls the fastest!

This easy-to-set-up game is great for birthday activities or playdates. It’s even great for kids games at picnics. You could even offer prizes to the winners.

This is bound to make the summer head out with a bang!

French People Have Spent 20 Years Building a Castle with Medieval Techniques, and It’s Almost Done

This is spectacular!

You don’t need to be a fan of history or obsessed with the Middle Ages to appreciate the hard work and determination that went into this incredible project.

The Guédelon is a castle built over the past 20 years in Burgundy, France, with only technology and materials that were available during the 13th century.

Posted by Guédelon on Saturday, July 13, 2019

That means stones are transported by cart, and specially designed cranes (13th-century style, of course) are used to get heavy rocks to the top of the castle.

Posted by Guédelon on Saturday, July 13, 2019

The project began in 1997 with Michel Guyot and Maryline Martin, who spearheaded the effort to get the castle built. Final completion is expected around 2023.

Posted by Guédelon on Tuesday, June 25, 2019

During the lengthy construction phase the site drew 300,000 curious visitors each year. Guédelon even has a historically accurate backstory attached to it as well, which he uses to guide all the castle’s design and construction decisions.

The backstory begins in 1228, and with each year that passes, the researchers and volunteers who work on the castle must adapt to changes in technology that actually occurred. The backstory now places the castle in 1248.

One of the guides at the castle said that the backstory somehow needed a little extra something to get visitors excited:

“The rule is that only what we know from documents that existed at the time is allowed. Funnily enough, we found that even though we knew we were being accurate, somehow the castle lacked soul. So we invented a character – the owner – who would have likes and dislikes, wanting this and not wanting that.”

Les préparations pour la nouvelle saison continuent !Preparations for the coming season are under way!

Posted by Guédelon on Thursday, March 6, 2014

So the “owner” of the castle is Seigneur Guilbert, a middle-ranking feudal lord who was allowed to build his castle on the land because he sided with the French crown during a rebellion. Clever, isn’t it?!?!

What a wonderful project.

The Heavy Metal Knitting World Championships Recently Took Place in Finland

There are no doubt a bunch of funny/weird/eccentric competitions out there that you and I haven’t heard about yet.

But this is something you should probably acquaint yourself with…because it is EPIC. The Heavy Metal Knitting World Championships took place in Joensuu, Finland, in July 2019 – and by the looks of it, it was a helluva lot of fun.

Posted by Heavy Metal Knitting on Thursday, July 11, 2019

It’s pretty simple: knitters get onstage and a heavy metal band plays. So the knitters kind of become part of the band. Heavy metal is hugely popular in Finland, so it only makes sense that this unusual contest took place there. Finnish heavy metal bands that are popular include HIM, Insomnium, Children of Bodom, Amorphis, Lordi, and Nightwish.

Posted by Heavy Metal Knitting on Thursday, July 11, 2019

You know what else is really popular in Finland? You guessed it! Knitting! Perfect combination, right? A band called Maniac Abductor (great name, by the way) played while the knitters feverishly worked their fingers to the bone.

One competitor in the competition said, “Knitting is such a meditative activity, but now it’s energetic and it’s heart-pumping.” Another added, “It’s ridiculous, but it’s so much fun.”

It's one week since the 1st Heavy Metal Knitting World Championship and we're still overwhelmed by all of this! There has been so many articles, interviews and media interest towards our newly established sport that we've completely lost track of how far and wide the information has spread. We checked the top 10 most viewed videos on Facebook, Twitter and Youtube – combined they have 24 million views and around 200 000 shares at the moment, and it's just the top 30 posts of these channels :O A month ago "heavy metal knitting" search in Google resulted in a few thousand results. Today the amount of results stands at over 500 000 ? There has been several tv-spots in Japan, radio interviews in Australia and UK, many of the contestants have been interviewed in their home countries. So amazing and crazy at the same time! Knitting is definitely no bullshitting. Thank you for making this all possible! We're currently drafting the outlines of the event for next year and will let you know immediately when we've agreed on the date of the competition ? (The Knitting is no Bullshitting cloth was used in @antra.karkla final act ?) (Picture by @tovarimarketing @joonakotilainen ?) #heavymetalknitting

A post shared by Heavy Metal Knitting (@heavymetalknitting) on

This is how the event’s Facebook page sums it up:

“In heavy metal knitting, needlework and music become united like never before. On the same stage, accompanied by a million-dollar guitar solo, with hair flowing in the air, there’s heavy metal music and knitting, shaking hands.

Knitting to the rhythm of heavy metal music can be compared to playing air guitar — which is a Finnish way to goof around as well. In heavy metal knitting, the knitter becomes a part of the band, showing their best needlework tricks as the heavy riffs echo on the background. The knitter takes part in the jam while their balls of yarn and knitting needles swish through the air…”

And get a load of who ended up winning the championship.

Incredible. Here’s some video of the event you need to see.

I think I’m gonna have to go to this next year…Finland, here I come!

I’ve been thinking about milestones this week. • How they’re more like drafts and less like finished pieces. • Working on a typewriter recently, I realized it involves a lot less whimsy and a lot more concentration than I first imagined. • The 7 drafts above (swipe left) all nod their heads in agreement. ? • Margins don’t just appear. You can’t press the “Backspace” button to correct a mistake. Sometimes a little punctuating hammer won’t cooperate—I’m looking at you Mr. Dash.? ??? • And life, as you know, dear chronic creatives has a lot more moving pieces and clunky bits than an Olympia Typewriter. • For me, high school lead to nursing assistance lead to college lead to dropping out lead to nannying lead to unemployed-ness lead to here, where I read and write and paint and take care of my body. Draft 7. • I take courage in knowing that it’s not that I’ve missed a milestone of graduating college or landing a dream job. It is simply that I’m drafting on scrap paper until it’s time to get out the nice stuff. • And you? Do you do drafts in your art? • ??? • #chroniccreative #chronicillness #invisibleillness  #drafts #milestones #concentrate #typewriters #typewritersofinstagram #isthatevenathing #collegedropout #notashamed

Take a Look at These Commonly Used Words That Are Actually Acronyms

Did you know there are words in the English language (recognized by Webster) that were once acronyms? I suppose they could still be considered acronyms, but our lexicon has adopted them as pieces of vocabulary in their own right.

Here are a few interesting words that were once abbreviations.

5. L.A.S.E.R

LASER stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. The first laser was invented in 1960, but had a different name: LOSER. The “O” stood for ocsillation, because a laser (light) is technically an optical oscillator not an optical amplifier. But as the acronym rapidly spread, oscillation was later replaced by amplification. For obvious reasons.

4. C.A.R.E. Packages

CARE packages started in 1945 after the end of World War II. Care stood for the Cooperative for American Remittances to Europe, a group that started preparing packages filled with leftover “humanitarian aid to millions starving in post-war Europe.”

History.com explains, “These first ‘CARE Packages’ contained everything from whole-milk powder and liver loaf to margarine and coffee. The contents of CARE Packages soon expanded to include soap, diapers, school supplies, and medicine as well as fabric, thread, and needles to allow recipients to make and mend clothes.”

3. Navy S.E.A.L.

The SEALs are a group of America’s toughest and most elite navy professionals. Their name stands for “SEa, Air, and Land”. This special operations force adopted the name “SEAL” because of their training and duties spanned “all environments (sea, air, and land)”.

2. S.C.U.B.A.

This well-known activity has been around since 1939. It was first used in military applications, but is now widely enjoyed by vacationers for entertainment, biologists for scientific research, and in many other circumstances. But it wasn’t coined “SCUBA” until 1952.

Wikipedia states, “In the U.S. Major Christian J. Lambertsen invented an underwater free-swimming oxygen rebreather in 1939. In 1952 he patented a modification of his apparatus, this time named SCUBA (an acronym for “self-contained underwater breathing apparatus“).

1. Z.I.P. Codes

As we all know, this term is used to help the post office designate what township or region a building or home location resides. It means Zone Improvement Plan Code.

The ZIP code “was chosen to suggest that the mail travels more efficiently and quickly (zipping along) when senders use the code in the postal address.”

Before ZIP codes’ inception, delivering mail was taxing. Robert Moon, a career postal employee, created the first codes, consisting of only 3 numbers that notated each central mail processing facility. It wasn’t until 1963 that the ZIP codes expanded to five numbers so as to have more combinations available to accurately reflect area.
