There is a banyan tree that has been officially under arrest (and chained) for over 100 years. In 1898 an intoxicated British officer ordered the mess sergeant to arrest the tree as he thought that it was moving towards him. Since then, the tree has remained in chains.

Ernest Hemmingway was gifted a 6-toed cat named Snow White. Snow White’s 40-50 descendants still live at his Florida home. Over half of them also have 6 toes. Which is why polydactyls are often known as Hemingway Cats.

In 1993, Coca-Cola created a soda for the dystopian future, called OK Soda, which came with its own manifesto, and the slogan, “Everything is going to be OK.”

The Island of Märket

Märket is a tiny island divided by the Finnish-Swedish border. When the finns inadvertedly built a lighthouse on the wrong side of the border, the swedes agreed to trade it for an equal spot of land on the other side, causing the border to zig-zag.

Telephone of the Wind

There is a phone booth known as the “Telephone of the Wind” on a hill overlooking the ocean in Otsuchi Town in northeastern Japan. It is connected to nowhere, but people come to “call” family members lost during the tsunami of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.

5,000 year old beer receipt

This picture of an ancient tablet is actually a 5,000 year old beer receipt. ‘Alulu beer receipt’ records a purchase of “best” beer from a brewer, c. 2050 BC from the Sumerian city of Umma in ancient Iraq.
