People Love This Big Friendly Baby Boi

I don’t know what to think about the internet anymore. I don’t know what to do with this information. I don’t know how to process the fact that people all over social media are losing their minds over a big baby. And I don’t mean, like, someone who cries a lot and is immature. I mean literally just…a really big baby.

The kid in question – apparently named Gavin – was brought to the internet’s attention by a TikTok account operated by his parents. Here’s the spark that started the fire:

That’s pretty much all it took for folks to start being ridiculous.

Look, we all know that people reach for hyperbole on the internet as a means of semi-ironic humor, but this time around we’re talking about a BABY. And a lot of the comments are so mean and gross that I don’t even want to dignify them with a share on this page.

Others, however, welcome our big boi overlord.

Pretty much any time Gavin pops up anywhere, the jokes start rolling out in an endless cascade.

This above-average toddler is, apparently, the very most shocking thing anyone has ever seen, ever, in their whole lives, ever.

A lot of the riffing wanders away from the mean and into some more clever meme-mixing territory, though.

Imagine what this kid is going to think when, years later, he stumbles upon the origin story he was living without even realizing it.

And what about the parents in all this? Well, they’re continuing post new TikToks of Gavin, a lot of which are pretty clever and endearing. And every time, the riffs start rolling in (pro tip: if you’ve got a big baby joke to make, scroll up and make sure it hasn’t already been said 400 times.) The account currently has over 150 thousand followers and nearly 3 million likes.

Despite all the insanity surrounding the internet’s reaction to their kiddo, Gavin’s parents seem to be managing it alright. They’re continuing to post, they disable comments when they get out of hand, and they’re even memeing like champs.

Some commentators have taken it upon themselves to declare that Gavin must not be healthy to be the size he is at the age he is. And while I’m sure everyone offering those criticisms is definitely a medical professional and not just speculating, their parents have insisted that he is just fine.

They respond pretty regularly to the positive comments. At the end of the day, there are a lot of people just enjoying Gavin’s cheerful presence on the internet. He does seem to have a pretty irrepressible joy to him.

And look, if you can’t say anything nice, at least say something funny and original.

Personally, I’m on team Gavin.

Some Parents Are Annoyed by a Hospital Poster Shaming Them for Looking at Their Cell Phones

We all have to answer questions in this day and age about how much, how often, when and where we choose to pick up our phones. Sometimes we’re reading emails from work, or answering texts from friends or family or looking up a recipe for dinner, and other times we might be scrolling through Facebook or keeping up with the latest snark on the news on Twitter.

The truth is that your kids have no idea what the difference is – they see you staring at your phone and they know you’re not paying attention to them, full stop.

It’s complicated, and we all have to decide for ourselves what we want technology in our homes to look like.

The personal nature of those choices is probably why new parents want to snarl at a hospital poster suggesting they’re going to screw up their brand-new bundle by picking up their phones instead of staring lovingly into their sleeping (or screaming) faces.

Even worse – this was posted in a U.K. version of a NICU, meaning that the parents there spend long, stressful hours waiting for the day they can take their child home.

And, if they’re anything like me (who had a healthy, if pissy, newborn), most of the things they’re staring at on their device are answers to panicked questions about all things baby and motherhood.

The sign reads “Mummy and Daddy, Please look at ME when I am feeding. I am much more interesting than your phone!!”

Surely, the person who wrote it intended it as a reminder of the importance of bonding, but it definitely comes across as shaming in a place where added stress is the very last thing anyone needs.

During those long, late hours spent feeding, worrying, and just disconnected from the real world in general, our devices can be like a lifeline to other people – something not to be discounted, even if moderation is obviously key.

The Yeovil District Hospital responded to the outcry with a statement:

“These posters were created by our Special Care Baby Unit nurses following UNICEF baby-friendly accreditation training and have been in place for a few months. They are intended to be used only within the context of the unit, where we support mums of premature or very poorly babies in building a healthy connection.”

Twitter clapbacked at that as well…

Which is fine, but someone should definitely work on their wording. A simple statement about the importance of bonding with premature infants would have sufficed.

Postpartum is a hard enough time, and we’re already questioning literally everything we’re doing – the last thing new parents need is the hospital staff pouring on more of the same.

Does Having Children Before Marriage Raise Your Risk for Divorce?

Divorce is pretty common these days but it was actually less common as recently as just a few decades ago.

That said, many people find the idea of committing to a child easier than committing to another full-grown adult, and are choosing a partner for parenting before they go all-in with a wedding.

The good news? If you do decide, after having kids, to pull the trigger on an ‘I do,” your odds for ending up divorced are no better (or worse) than if you married before getting pregnant.

While divorce rates are on a decline, it’s important to point out that the number of people getting married in the first place is also 25-30% lower than it was during the boomer generation. Fewer people (and couples) are having children at all, as well, and for the first time ever there are more unmarried than married women under thirty giving birth.

Kelly Musick from Cornell University was the study‘s coauthor, and she told Live Science that she and her team analyzed data from the CDC to compare families who had babies between 1985-1995 and those who had babies between 1997-2010. The result?

Since 1997, couples who had children first were likely to get married eventually, and no more likely to get divorced than people who married before having kids.

Why? The study says there is more than one factor at play.

“They’ve got marriage on the back of their minds, but wait to take that step until they feel they’ve met these pretty high standards. The increasing stability of relationships involving cohabitation and the declining importance of marriage timing relative to parenthood is consistent with waning social pressure to marry and the blurring of boundaries between marriage and cohabitation.”

The study did not compare planned pregnancies to unplanned ones, which could make a difference since unexpected surprises can be a huge challenge for couples to navigate. Unexpected pregnancies can make couples feel more pressure to commit to each other even if they have a sense that it won’t work.

Sexologist and author Nikki Goldstein told Fatherly “…there might not have been a long term commitment made before the baby is born, for some there might be questions. Like if they did not have a child together would they have stayed together.”

Issues like that can breed resentment, but in couples who are already living together and plan to bring a baby into the mix, it’s not a consideration.

So, as long as your pregnancies are planned, you don’t have to say “I do” before little ones come along.

But don’t think that means you don’t have to work on your marriage and make it a priority when you can – kids or not, married first or not, the chance for divorce is always lurking.
