Is This Person Rude for Not Letting Their Neighbor Hang Stuff on His Fence?

I’ve learned in my life that people get really worked up about a lot of stuff, especially when it comes to houses.

Two of those things are yards and fences.

And, in case you haven’t been paying attention, it would be in your best interest to NOT mess with either of those things…

And this neighborly dispute over a fence got ugly…let’s check it out.

AITA for building a fence on my property and not allowing my neighbor to hang stuff on it or paint it?

“This will probably be rather short and I am not sure if it’s worth posting, but I really need to get a read on whether I am being an a**hole or not, so here goes.

I bought a house with a big yard several months ago, it is my very first house and the most expensive thing I have ever owned, prior to this I have only ever lived in apartments and the dynamic between neighbors seems really different, which is another reason I am asking.

When I moved here there was a very old rotten wooden fence on the property separation line between me and my new neighbors property, I wanted to replace it from the start however I decided to focus on the house first, you know the usual stuff, fixing up what needed “fixing upping”, Painting, Flooring, moving in the furniture and so on before focusing on the yard.

Now the guy who owned my house before was an old man and because of his age the Yard had not seen much work done for what I assume were several years, so it has been a lot of work fixing up the yard. About a month ago I finally got some time to replace the fence. I went over to the neighbors house, talked about replacing the Fence and if he was going to split the cost with me but he would have nothing of it, he said the fence was fine and he has no issue with no fence so if I want to remove it I should go ahead but he was not giving me a dime to replace it.

It’s worth adding that the previous Fence was completely on my property and purchased completely by the previous owner, the neighbor has no claim on it.

While I was a bit weirded out by his response I decided to just finance the fence myself and install it myself, being quite a few bucks and a lot of hard work lighter I am now the proud owner of a nice, tall, wooden fence. I need to point out just to make this clear, I paid for it entirely, I put it up by myself, I removed the old fence on my own and the fence is entirely on my side of the property line.

I came home from work a few days ago to find my fence on the neighbors side entirely filled with plant pots, the border also filled in with all sorts of plants and he had painted it.

I went over to my neighbor and demanded he take all of it down alongside demanding he’d get his sand grinder and take the paint of off my fence as well, after all you don’t want to pay for it, you don’t get to paint it or hang s**t on it or for that matter plant stuff in my yard(As I said the fence is entirely on my property, so the border of his yard where he planted stuff is also mine).

He laughed at me and essentially told me to get f**ked. Well I went back there, tossed all his c**p off off my fence, pulled all of his plants out and tossed them in his yard and painted the side towards his fence an obnoxious bright yellow.

I have since had him raging at my door, his kids came over to yell at me as they had worked for hours on it and well, here we are, I am wondering whether I am the a**hole as I might have gone too far.”

You know the drill…

Now let’s check out how readers responded!

This person said that this man is not a jerk because it’s his property AND he paid for it.

Another Reddit user said the neighbor could actually be charged with a number of crimes for their behavior.

This individual said that the man shouldn’t let this stand and that he needs to take care of it ASAP.

Lastly, this reader said they don’t think the guy who wrote the post is an a**hole but he probably could handle the situation in a different way.

A Guy Told His Neighbor Off After an Argument. Was He Wrong?

It’s starting to sound like the Hatfields and the McCoys on social media lately!

Every time I turn around, I feel like I hear about another story of neighbors gone wild.

And here’s another one! So hang on tight…

It comes to us from Reddit’s “Am I The A**hole?” page…let’s take a look at what went down.

AITA For telling my neighbor to get f**ked when he told me to remove my doorbell camera?

“So lately, there have been a number of burglaries in the area I live in.

My wife and I were among those who got burglarized and most of the stuff we lost were packages and electronics. My wife and I both work long hours so we’re not home most of the time and despite taking precautions, we still are concerned for the safety of our belongings as well as other things.

So I decided to get a doorbell camera which frankly has become a necessity and it’s cheap to buy ($199) and easy to install. And so far we were able to catch a number of thieves in act (to my surprise some of them I knew personally and were from the area) which helped lot in getting our stuff back.

Onto the issue: So my neighbor and I were discussing this with few other neighbors and I showed him a video that was taking by the camera to explain how we were able to identify the individuals who tried to steal stuff. I was fastforward-ing the footage but He suddenly freaked out and pointed at his wife who was at the door to visit my wife.

I was confused when he asked how long I been keeping this video/and if I made copies of it. He then proceeded to tell me it did not feel right to see his wife being recorded by the doorbell cam and the fact that I didn’t get rid of this part since it had nothing to do with catching the thieves made him uncomfortable.

I apologized for any misunderstanding and promised that it had nothing to do with his wife we had few people stand at our door who were shown on our cam so I wasn’t just his wife. He cut the conversation and left. Then came back in the evening to ask for how long I will be keeping this camera. I asked why and he said he wasn’t sure about his wife being recorded and asked me to remove it.

I said no then he suggested I install one inside but I still said no. He got all p**sed and said that I was acting inappropriately and mean after he came to me with his concerns expecting me to understand that he doesn’t want me having ‘footages’ of his wife. I told him his wife can stop coming over if he was so worried but he went on about never telling his wife what to do or where to go.

He insisted I remove the cam but I told him to get F-ed and never bring this up again. He left and got others involved, they told me I should be more considerate of my neighbor’s feelings and understand where he’s coming from but I stood my ground and refused to remove the camera.

My wife thinks I was being a jerk to our neighbor and his wife and have some respect for them but I don’t think I was being disrespectful. Was I?”

Let’s see what Reddit users had to say about this.

This person said that this guy is not an a**hole at all and that it’s his right to have a security camera on his door.

Another reader thinks that something sounds a little bit fishy about the neighbor and there’s possibly some other reason that he doesn’t want this guy to have a camera on his door.

This individual said that you never really know how people will react if they think they’re being filmed or photographed…

And finally, this person said that it’s possible that this couple might even be in hiding.

Could be…?

If you’re anything like me, you have no idea who your neighbors even are. You’ve never met them, you don’t know their names – if you’re lucky you might RECOGNIZE them as, in fact, people that live around you.

If you’re like my dad on the other hand, you know all of them, and have a strict friend/enemy list onto which each one has a slot.

But either way, we can all appreciate the truly GOOD neighbors, which is what makes these posts from Reddit so special.

This Person Asked if They’re Wrong For Not Paying Neighbor’s Vet Bills After Dog Attacked Cat

Things always get heated when animals are involved…and you’re about to read quite a story from Reddit’s “Am I The A**hole?” page.

It features dogs, cats, and a dispute over some vet bills.

Let’s see what happened.

AITA for not paying the medical bills for my neighbor’s cat?

“Let me start off by giving the details.

My backyard is completely fenced in with a metal 6 ft high fence, and so is my neighbor’s. I have a 3 year old husky, they have a cat. My dog has full 24/7 access to my backyard through the use of a doggy door for 2 years now, and we’ve had no issue before.

Every now and then my neighbor’s cat would be sitting on top of the fence and my dog would bark at it, but the cat would run off. Not really an issue.

So now we’re at the part where I’m being accused of being an a**hole, a terrible person, and my neighbor is rallying up the whole block against me.

THEIR cat came through MY doggy door. My dog was alerted within seconds and reacted way faster than I could ever. The cat did recieve some damage, but I managed to save it from my dog. I then rushed it to the neighbor’s, and I drove them to the vet (they didn’t have a car.)

Their cat was okay, hurt, but okay. I brought them home and as I was saying my goodbyes and giving my condolences, they asked about medical expenses. I have pet insurance for my own dog, so I had reassurance that I would be able to afford my own animal’s medical expenses.

I wasn’t financially prepared to handle someone else’s. And I told my neighbor this, but they told me I’m at fault because it was my dog who attacked their cat. I failed to see how it was my fault, as the animal was trespassing in my own home, and my dog was reacting because it’s territory was being infiltrated.

They said same choice words but I ended up refusing to pay by saying “I’m not paying for your cats medical bills, forget it” and I walked away. Other neighbors are now giving me dirty looks and I just don’t feel welcomed here.

I do plan on replacing my doggy door with an electronic one that will only open for my own dog, so I’m not ignoring the issue. I just don’t think I’m to blame, especially when I did what I could to help.

So, AITA?”

Hmmmm. Let’s see how people responded on Reddit.

This reader said that, while they love cats, the cat in the story entered the house so you can’t blame the dog for attacking.

Another person argued that people who let their cats roam free are nothing but selfish and they do a lot of damage outside.

This individual said that cats tend to terrorize their neighborhoods and that this owner only cared when bad something to their cat…while ignoring everything else it does.

This reader said that outdoor cats are nothing but a nuisance.

And lastly, this person basically said that if you’re gonna play with fire, sometimes you’re gonna get burned.

Is This Person a Jerk for Getting Their Neighbor’s Car Towed?

Once you decide to get a person’s car towed, you know there’s gonna be some drama coming…if they find out who you are, that is.

And a person shared a towing story on Reddit’s “Am I the *sshole?” page and they asked for some feedback about the situation.

Let’s see what went down!

AITA for getting neighbor’s car towed for blocking me and now they want me to pay for their tow fee and ticket for calling to get them towed?

“I recently bought a house that was vacant for a while and people were using it as parking.

I moved in now it’s clear someone lives there so people stopped parking there.

Sometime last week I had to leave but couldn’t because when I opened my garage door there was a car there blocking it in.

I don’t know who’s car it is and I’m not going to waste my f*cking time walking around knocking on doors to figure out who’s it is.

Also you could’ve parked in the grass or off to the side or something I don’t know

Now I found out it’s someone 3 doors down because they knocked on my door demanding I pay them back because I’m the one who called to get it towed.

I told they should’ve had their visitors park at their house and they said “no, because we’ve always parked here”

Okay well not anymore and I’m not paying for your sh*t.

I kind of feel bad how much they had to pay but I shouldn’t have to take time out of my day to go figure out who’s car it is because they’re being d*cks.

Also why park in front of the garage??? Literally anywhere else would’ve just been annoying but I could’ve gone on with my day.”

Here’s what folks on AskReddit had to say about this.

A reader said that the person who got the car towed is definitely not wrong here…and they shared their own story of getting towed…

This person said that the writer of the post was only behaving like a responsible human.

Imagine that…

This person pointed out that they actually handled the situation like an adult…even though they’re only a teenager.

And finally, this person called them a “respectful teenager” and said that the writer’s parents obviously raised them the right way. Bravo!

There are so many apps these days that it’s enough to give a person a huge headache.

But there’s one app out there I’m a big fan of for many reasons. Yes, it’s helpful to know what’s going on in your neighborhood, but the better part is reading about the never-ending drama and totally weird events that are unfolding right under your nose.

I’m talking about the Nextdoor app, where people air their grievances, lose their minds about very bizarre things, and battle with their neighbors about things large and small.

It’s a blast and I highly recommend installing the app on your phone so you can have something to do when you have time to kill.

Here are some great examples of what I’m talking about. Let’s take a look!

People Discuss How to Deal With Annoying Neighbors Who Won’t Leave You Alone

It sure can be great to have neighbors who are helpful, reliable, and who don’t have raging parties at midnight on weekdays.

BUT, overly friendly and annoying neighbors who won’t leave you alone can also be a real drag. And sometimes it even gets to the point where you don’t want to step outside because you don’t want to get dragged into a two-hour conversation about the weather.

So how do you deal with these folks?

Let’s see what AskReddit users had to say about this.

1. Just tell ’em.

“I live in an extremely religious community ( Mormons) so this happens all the time. I used to try to be vague and give hints but the best technique I have found is this one.

“I am kind of a private person.”

And then I compliment them on something I have noticed.

“Nice grass” or “Hey thanks for checking on me, I know it comes from a good place.””

2. Polite and quick.

“If you’re not very open to chat, just keep things polite yet quick. It’s nice to have a good relationship with your neighbors.

If they do delve into personal questions, just say “that’s a bit personal, I’d rather not talk about that.”

Most important thing is to be polite. Don’t be an a**hole, or act standoffish when it’s not necessary.”

3. Avoid him.

“I ‘made friends’ with my neighbor at the beginning if lockdown. Now whenever I go out front of my house, he comes out. Every single time. Even when we just open our front door, he comes out and just sits.

One time, amazon dropped a package off when I was working on the side of the house. He opened his window, proceeded to YELL to me that Amazon had delivered a package.

I don’t go out of the front door anymore, unless going to my car. I just hang out around back and even take my dogs on walks leaving through and arriving through the back yard.”

4. Be nice.

“Be as polite as possible.

Seriously, its better than having a bad one who you are constantly at odds with.”

5. Keep it short.

“I think maybe they’re not so much intrusive just trying to spark a conversation.

I would stop what you’re doing, give them 5 minutes of undivided attention, you don’t have to reveal too much, just get to know each other, then wrap it up with an “alright good to see you, I gotta get back to this”.”

6. Ehhhhh…

“Keep your answers short, simple, and vague.

Example:

“What did you do this weekend?” “Ehh not much.”

The conversation will eventually fizzle out they’ll get the hint.”

7. I do this.

“Hmm….first thought?

Always leave the house wearing headphones, even if you’re not actually listening to music.

Every time you encounter said neighbor, give them a friendly wave and continue to carry on…”

8. Kill ’em with kindness.

“The only time I’ve had that happen was in my first apartment. Older lady next door always wanted to ask personal questions about me since I was so young.

When she asked overly personal questions I’d usually just smile and jokingly say something like “You’ll have to buy me dinner and a drink if you want to know me that well.””

9. There you go!

“I adopted a dog that absolutely hates my overly friendly/creepy neighbor.

Problem solved.”

10. Good advice.

“Anyways, I am generally a magnet for weirdos, so I have oodles of experience with this. The simplest way to deal with the nosey person is turn a lot of the questions back at them.

“Oh, thanks for asking, but I really need to know where you bought that fern. It’s so neat looking”.

“Oh, my job is boring. Tell me what you do for a living”.

Most of these busy bodies are looking for info to tell others. They’re so bored in their lives they have to know everyone else’s business. Either turn the question back at them or practice giving vague answers that say nothing.

“Oh, we’ve been married a while. Y’know, time flies”.

If you can’t or don’t want to talk to them, make sure you have very visible headphones on (even if your not actually listening to anything). Don’t remove them when they speak to you. Either just lift one each time they speak or leave them on and yell really uncomfortably loud when responding.

Occasionally misunderstand what they said because you couldn’t hear them. If they push it, say you’re listening to classes to learn a foreign language for work. The boss put you on a deadline to learn it. (Pick an obscure language)

If all that doesn’t work (those extra special nosey people), start feeding them really strange information that they’ll sound weird repeating to the neighbors.

Of course, the best remedy is to just talk to them for a minute, then excuse yourself and tell them you really have to get back to whatever you’re doing. Then step away. But it’s sometimes fun to mess with the annoying ones.”

11. Plan of attack.

“My partner and I just moved in to a house and got cornered by a neighbor for 30 minutes. My Midwest sense of guilt needs to clarify a few things.

We were on our way to do stuff, this neighbor started talking and didn’t stop for 30 minutes. I’m not exaggerating. Half an hour. Non stop talking AT us, not with us. We tried every little polite out we could take.

Plenty of “welllp”s and “Damn, that’s crazy”s and even a few god damn “well we should really get going”s. I even started leading the conversation into the middle of the street hoping a passing car would seperate us. None if it worked. We only finally made it out of there because it got dark.

I’ve decided the next time this happens I’m just going to tell her politely, but firmly, that I need to take a dump and then just walk away.”

12. We’re getting out of here.

“Try having a neighbor who tracks when you leave and arrive back home. Talks to your boss about your work schedule and when you’re actually supposed to be at home.

Asking my boss if I had Covid when she noticed I hadn’t left the house in a couple days. The list goes on and on. I hate nosy neighbors, is your life really that miserable you have to worry about STRANGERS?!

I told her off and we are currently looking to move. Some people are just bad neighbors.”

13. This is kind of crazy.

“I’ve learned this lesson a very hard way I’ve know my neighbor (56m) for around 15 years and considered him a family friend. He watched me grow up and our families have even taken a vacation together.

He was always nosey and asked personal questions but I shrugged it off as that’s just how he is. That was until my girlfriend (20f) moved in with us. He slowly became more and more friendly with her. Asking her where she works. About her family. And slowly changing his personality to hers. I suspected something was going on.

Keep in mind he is married with a daughter still in high school. One day I came home from work and my girlfriend was sharing a beer and talk with him in his garage nothing out of the normal he frequently invited us over for beers and what not so I thought nothing of it. A few days later my girlfriend comes to me in tears. And not of sadness but of frightened tears.

After what seemed like forever she told me. That the night she had a beer with him he told her horrible things. That he wanted to f*ck her brains out and steal her and tie her up. He’s thought about breaking into our home and taking advantage of her. He as well broke into her car and was leaving her love notes. My once friendly neighbor went crazy.

I confronted him about the situation and he admitted to it and told me I was no good and did not deserve her. And keep in mind he told me this in his backyard with his wife and daughter home. Fast forward a month later. (In this time he hasn’t showed his face since).

My girlfriend gets off work early and as she is walking into our house he was hiding in the bushes asking if she was afraid of him. She ran inside and we had to call the police.

And for the next Two months he sat on his property line next to ours with a small foldable chair and just watched our house. So the best way to deal with a overly nosey neighbor is to cut the convo short and walk away.”
