A Mom’s Video About her Bullied Son Went Viral. The Internet Shows Their Support and Will Send Him To Disneyland.

Social media gets a bad rap sometimes, but sometimes it can help create some truly life-changing moments.

Take the story of young Quaden Bayles, for example. The 9-year-old boy was born with a form of Dwarfism called Achondroplasia and his mother, Yarraka Bayles, recently shared a distressing video of her unconsolable son reacting to being bullied at his school in Australia.  In it, the young boy talks about killing himself because he is so upset.

This is the impacts of bullying! I seriously don’t know what else to do! ?

Posted by Yarraka Bayles on Tuesday, February 18, 2020

The video went viral in a massive way and has touched people around the globe.

Quaden said about his story,

“The parents should make them be nicer to kids with disabilities.

If you get bullied stand up for yourself and don’t listen to what they say.”

His mother wrote in a statement,

“Quaden Bayles’ family would like to take this time firstly to thank everyone for the overwhelming show of love and support from so many people from all around the world.”

A comedian with Dwarfism named Brad Williams was so touched by the video that he set up a GoFundMe page to raise $10,000 to send Quaden to Disneyland.

As of today, he’s raised almost $275,000!

The money that isn’t spent on flying Quaden and his mother to the U.S. will be donated to anti-bullying and anti-abuse charities.

A bunch of other celebrities have stepped up to support Quaden as well on social media, including one of Australia’s most famous sons, Mr. Hugh Jackman.

Actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan of ‘The Walking Dead’ also showed his support.

Boston Celtics player Enes Kanter tweeted his love too!

And the National Rugby League Indigenous All Stars asked Quaden to lead them out onto the field for their match this weekend.

Don’t you love it when social media is used for good?

Keep your head up Quaden, and don’t ever let anyone out there make you feel like you don’t deserve the absolute best in life!

And kudos to all the celebrities (especially Brad Williams) who brought attention to this important story. Good work all around, humans!

People Talk About 13 Commonly-Believed Myths and Explain Why They’re so Dumb

You can immediately verify pretty much any fact these days by looking it up on Google. If you’re savvy enough, you’ll have the truth within a few minutes. But once upon a time, misinformation spread really easily. To this day, there are a ton of “facts” that countless people believe are true, even though they couldn’t be more false.

A Reddit user asked, “What stupid myth do too many people believe?”

The people answered, and let’s just say everyone should read this thread to avoid looking stupid.

1. Frogs don’t jump out of boiling water.

“That if you put a frog in tepid water and slowly raise the temperature, the frog won’t try to escape and save itself when the temp gets too high.

Great for illustrating certain points, but completely untrue.”

2. Goldfish live in bowls.

“That goldfish ARE NOT meant to live in bowls! The average goldfish gets about fourteen inches long in proper conditions, and because they’re such dirty animals (they generate ammonia like you wouldn’t believe) they need heavy proper filtration. Yes, you should have 20 gallons per goldfish. That means two goldfish go into a FILTERED forty gallon tank. No, an air pump is not a filter. No, a plant is not a filter. No, you cannot put other tropical fish with your goldfish, because goldfish require lower temperatures (65 degrees Fahrenheit) while tropical fish require higher temperatures (78 degrees Fahrenheit).

Goldfish can live up to 25 years. Putting them in a bowl means you are stunting their growth, but not the growth of their inner organs. They stay 2 inches while their organs keep growing inside of them, which is why they die in 2 years, instead of living to be 25 years old, and over a foot long.

That turned more into a rant than anything but oh well, PSA brought to you by a humble aquatics associate at a pet store.”

3. The Bermuda triangle.

“For any given same-sized sea area there is statistically the same amount of missing ships and planes.

No, it’s not fucking a magically dangerous place.

Grow up.”

4. Gum stays in your stomach for seven years.

“Actual truth is that you shit out a piece of gum within a day or two in case anybody wanted to know.

So yeah… this one is complete bullshit”

5. You can target belly fat.

“Spot reduction of fat.

People think that doing sit-ups will burn fat around your belly area.

How stupid can you be?”

6. Fire sprinklers go off whenever the alarm does.

“They don’t all go off by pulling a fire alarm.

They’re individually heat-activated.”

7. Cracking your knuckles causes arthritis.

“All it is is just gas bubbles popping.

Also some guy did a long term experiment (several decades I think) where he constantly cracked all knuckles in one hand and left the other one alone.

After the experiment was over, they took X-rays and tests to find that both hands were practically identical in terms of condition.”

8. How to cure a snake bite.

“You can suck venom out of a snake bite…..”

“My cat bit a friend who was catsitting for me, he tried to suck out the venom’ and spent several days in hospital with sepsis.”

9. Rabbits love carrots.

“This isn’t actually that stupid really but it’s my favorite weird myth: That rabbits love carrots.

They don’t, you give a hungry rabbit a carrot it’ll probably eat it, but they likely wouldn’t be high on it’s preference list. So why are carrots stereotyped as a rabbit’s favorite food? Weirdly, because of Bugs Bunny.

Bugs is always munching on a carrot, but why if rabbits don’t really eat carrots normally? Because he was created in 1938 and that particular quirk was a parody of Clark Gable’s character from the 1934 movie It Happened One Night, who had a famous scene being a wiseacre while munching on a carrot. The movie is mostly forgotten today but was a huge hit at the time. Contemporary audiences (who would have also been seeing the cartoons in a movie theater as pre-show shorts) would have recognized the reference as easily as early 2000s audiences would recognize a bullet dodging scene as Matrix parody.

The carrot munching bit became Bugs’ signature and over time the origin was mostly forgotten. Everyone associated rabbits with carrots so strongly because of that that it eventually became “common knowledge” that rabbits love carrots despite it not being true at all.

The myth is prevalent enough that pet shops will commonly warn people getting pet rabbits to make sure they feed them a proper diet, because carrots are not sufficient and the poor bunny can actually starve to death.”

10. Porcupines can shoot quills.

“Too many people believe that porcupines can shoot their quills when they actually have to jab you with their quills.”

11. Being an organ donor is risky.

“That if you’re an organ donor then doctors won’t try hard to save you and might ‘let you die’.

I’m a doctor, when I’m treating a patient whether the patient is an organ donor or not never crosses my mind, I will genuinely have no idea. And even if I did, why would I want to sacrifice MY patient for some random other patient across the country? Surely that would just make me look like a shit doctor!”

12. Humans only use 10% of their brain.

“Good grief I can’t listen to people who say this is true. The worst thing is, my teacher in elementary school thinks that humans only use 10-15% of their brain, and the reason Albert Einstein, for example, was super smart is that he used about 30% of his brain. The biggest amount of bullshit I’ve ever heard, and the person saying it is a science teacher…”

13. A fractured bone is different than a broken one.

“In my experience, it seems that most people think a fracture is when it’s not broken the whole way and broken means it’s broken clean in half (or multiple pieces).

In this case, I understand their intent, they simply don’t know the right words. Still annoying though, they do mean the same thing.”

So what did you think about those myths? Have your mind blown by any of that info?

Tell us a myth you couldn’t believe wasn’t true in the comments. Sharing is caring!

Some Parents Are Annoyed by a Hospital Poster Shaming Them for Looking at Their Cell Phones

We all have to answer questions in this day and age about how much, how often, when and where we choose to pick up our phones. Sometimes we’re reading emails from work, or answering texts from friends or family or looking up a recipe for dinner, and other times we might be scrolling through Facebook or keeping up with the latest snark on the news on Twitter.

The truth is that your kids have no idea what the difference is – they see you staring at your phone and they know you’re not paying attention to them, full stop.

It’s complicated, and we all have to decide for ourselves what we want technology in our homes to look like.

The personal nature of those choices is probably why new parents want to snarl at a hospital poster suggesting they’re going to screw up their brand-new bundle by picking up their phones instead of staring lovingly into their sleeping (or screaming) faces.

Even worse – this was posted in a U.K. version of a NICU, meaning that the parents there spend long, stressful hours waiting for the day they can take their child home.

And, if they’re anything like me (who had a healthy, if pissy, newborn), most of the things they’re staring at on their device are answers to panicked questions about all things baby and motherhood.

The sign reads “Mummy and Daddy, Please look at ME when I am feeding. I am much more interesting than your phone!!”

Surely, the person who wrote it intended it as a reminder of the importance of bonding, but it definitely comes across as shaming in a place where added stress is the very last thing anyone needs.

During those long, late hours spent feeding, worrying, and just disconnected from the real world in general, our devices can be like a lifeline to other people – something not to be discounted, even if moderation is obviously key.

The Yeovil District Hospital responded to the outcry with a statement:

“These posters were created by our Special Care Baby Unit nurses following UNICEF baby-friendly accreditation training and have been in place for a few months. They are intended to be used only within the context of the unit, where we support mums of premature or very poorly babies in building a healthy connection.”

Twitter clapbacked at that as well…

Which is fine, but someone should definitely work on their wording. A simple statement about the importance of bonding with premature infants would have sufficed.

Postpartum is a hard enough time, and we’re already questioning literally everything we’re doing – the last thing new parents need is the hospital staff pouring on more of the same.

What do you think? Good reminder or should the hospital just mind their own business?

A Newly Discovered Weed Compound Might Be 30 Times More Potent Than THC

This is great news for anyone who’s ever used cannabis and thought to themselves, “Boy, I wish I was 30 times higher.”

A newly-discovered cannabinoid called THCP could potentially be over 30 times more potent than THC, according to recent reports.

THCP stands for tetrahydrocannabiphorol. It was discovered alongside another previously unknown compound called CBDP. The latter compound seems to be a “cousin” to CBD, another popular cannabinoid that is often used for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anticonvulsant effects.

There are almost 150 cannabis compounds, and not all of them cause a psychoactive effect (or in other words, get you high). THC does, while CBD does not. Those are the two most-studied compounds in cannabis.

It hasn’t yet been determined whether THCP creates a psychoactive effect in humans or not.

But in the lab, THCP has been shown to be 30 times more potent than THC. This is because it has a longer alkyl side chain, which is “the driving force behind a cannabinoid’s effects on humans,” CNN reports. While most cannabis compounds (including THC) have a five-atom chain, THCP has a seven-atom one.

If this new compound does have the ability to get you high, then that might explain why some strains of weed are stronger than others — more-so than can be explained by THC alone.

Dr. Cinzia Citti, lead author of the research, told CNN,

“In cannabis varieties where THC is present in very low concentrations, then we can think that the presence of another, more active cannabinoid can explain those effects.”

Cannabis compounds can be hard to isolate and study — not to mention all the legalization stuff. So it’s unlikely you’ll see THCP for sale anytime soon.

Still, the research is fascinating and promising!

Discover How Long It Takes to Double Your Investments by Using the Rule of 72

For young workers, a paycheck and maybe even health insurance benefits are the primary reasons to get a job. But that paycheck will only take you so far if you aren’t smart about utilizing it to build more capital for the future.

Of course, investing is such a broad term that involves its own set of vocabulary that many of us simply aren’t taught in high school or college.

However, even if you’re new to the savings and investing game, it’s important that you know about how to double your money with the Rule of 72.

So what exactly is the magic behind the number 72?

By dividing the number 72 by the interest rate of your return, you can calculate the number of years it will take to double your investment.

This applies to all your financial accounts, including savings, money market accounts, index and mutual funds.

Lifehacker writer Nicole Dieker utilized her personal financial figures to illustrate just how the formula works.

Dieker’s Capital One 360 savings account earns an interest rate of 0.63 percent. By dividing 72 by that paltry figure, it would take Dieker 114 years to double her money.

At least her Vanguard investment accounts are in better shape, as they earn an average rate of return of 10.3 percent. In that case, it would only take Dieker seven years to double her money.

Financial tips like the Rule of 72 can be critically helpful for novice investors like myself. Delving into the world of stocks, mutual funds, cryptocurrency and everything in between can be daunting for those without a strong financial background.

When it comes to the Rule of 72, percentage points matter. So take the time and do your homework on potential investments before you fully commit.

Here’s How a Navy SEAL Deals With Sleep Deprivation

Parents don’t get as much sleep as any functioning human needs on a daily basis. And that’s not me talking – there have been countless studies on the physical and psychological benefits of a restful night.

From the time you bring home a newborn, though, your ability to sleep when and for as long as you’d like goes right out the window. Even once your kids are technically sleeping through the night, there will be times when they don’t, when they’re sick, or when they decide the crack of dawn is their new “good morning” time – which means that it’s yours, too.

If you’re looking for ways to cope – or just to function – one Navy SEAL is here to share his tips on how he managed sleep deprivation in conditions that are almost as harrowing as the first weeks home with your first baby.

Almost.

Former Navy SEAL John McGuire has experiences with both kinds of hell, as he’s not only survived the 5 days with 4 hours of sleep Navy SEAL test, but he’s also the father of 5 kids.

This guy is a pro and he’s an in-demand motivational speaker who helps people who are facing down any sort of sleep-deprivation test in the near future.

Step One: Get Your Head Right

John says that, first and foremost, you’ve got to keep your wits about you.

“You can’t lose your focus or discipline. Self-doubt destroys more dreams than failure ever has.”

Step Two: Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

You can’t do anything as hard as being an elite military member or raising children without a good team around you, and communication is key. Talk about how you’re feeling, when you need a break, or what is about to make you lose your ever-loving mind if it doesn’t change immediately.

McGuire says to remind yourself that you’re likely not responding at your best because you’re sleep-deprived, and hopefully your partner will keep that in mind the next time you bite his or her head off, too.

Step Three: Secure Your Own Oxygen Mask First

Like on an airplane, you need to remember to take care of yourself – especially making time to exercise.

“Exercise helps reduce stress, helps you sleep better, and get the endorphins pumping. You can hold your baby and do squats if you want. It’s not as much about the squats as making sure you exercise and clear the mind.”

This one is particularly hard for me, so I appreciate the reminder!

Step Four: Don’t Try to Be the Hero

Sleep when you can, for as long as you can – don’t try to act like you don’t need it when you do.

“Sleep is like water; you need it when you need it.”

Step Five: Know Your Limits

When you’re not getting enough sleep, many things suffer – your patience, your eating habits, and your ability to think on your feet.

“A good leader makes decisions to improve things, not make them worse. If you’re in bad shape, you could fall asleep at the wheel, you can harm your child. You’ve got to take care of yourself.”

Final Tip: Embrace the Insanity

Remember that everything in life is a season, and with kids, those seasons are typically very short.

“You learn a lot about people and yourself through your children. Have lots of adventures. Take lots of pictures and give lots of hugs. It won’t last forever – and you’ll have plenty of time to sleep when it’s over.”

So, there you go. Having brought home two newborns, neither of whom thought sleep was a necessary thing, I can confirm that you definitely need a strategy and that all of this is very good advice.

Good luck out there, folks. You’re gonna need all the help you can get.

And yeah, you’re probably going to need a shoulder to cry on when it’s over, and you can sleep as much as you want.

Here’s a Hack for Helping Your Kid Learn to Tie Their Own Shoes

My oldest child is 3, and I’ve been wondering how many years I have left of tying shoes (or buying ones that close with hooks and loops). Apparently, it’s still a while down the road for me, but if your kid is ready but still struggling to master tying his or her own shoes, here’s a pretty genius hack for making it happen sooner rather than later.

Check it out!

“My name is Colton and there’s a new way to tie shoes,” the 5-year-old says in a video before showing the world how he learned to tie his sneakers from a friend at school.

Kids struggle to tie their shoes mostly because their fingers aren’t big enough to hold the loops shut while they tie the shoes – they can either tie the knot or maintain the loop, but not both at the same time.

But the way Colton does it eliminates the problem completely.

Instead of trying to hold the loops shut with his fingers, Colton sticks the end of the shoelace into the top lace hole, holding them in places while he ties the (double) knot.

Then, he pulls the ends free and goes about his day!

People Share the Biggest Issue They Have with Their First Name

Parents really try their hardest when picking out a name for their baby. They want the name to mean something, but not be so weird that it makes their baby’s life harder for years to come. They try to consider initials and nicknames and just generally to do right by their kid – it’s a huge responsibility, naming another person!

That said, things don’t always work out as planned (and I guess some people don’t take it too seriously to begin with), and people can end up…if not hating, then at least being displeased by their names.

If you want to know some of their reasons, well, these 18 people are here to dish!

18. There’s no way to predict the next big thing.

17. We can learn it if we want to.

16. That barista just stopped trying.

15. My sister has only a middle initial and I can confirm the age of automation has made these things extra difficult.

14. That’s just really insulting.

13. This is way too long of a conversation.

12. I wish she was kidding.

11. It’s like playing a game you wish you weren’t winning.

10. What on earth would Clyde be short FOR, I wonder?

9. There’s something you don’t want to have to say every day.

8. I’d probably just start with Ed.

7. Talk about an unfortunate twist of fate.

6. I mean. He kind of brought that on himself.

5. Here I thought “with a C” would be the default.

4. …is it really, though?

3. Seriously, it takes two seconds to double check.

2. Manners seem to also be a thing for old people these days.

1. I guess sometimes close enough will do.

I disliked my name when I was younger, but now I like it (and I’ve never had any problems like these)!

Collectors Share the Odd Things They Can’t Stop Grabbing

I’ve never really been much of a collector (aside from books), but I understand that many people all over the world find themselves with houses full of one thing or another. My mother collected Precious Moments figurines, my sister loves dreamcatchers, my husband, raw gems and minerals….

And if any of those things surprise you, well, these 16 confessions should really pique your interest.

16. He just likes the sound they make.

Bottle caps. Not a Fallout fan, just like the little clinklies.

15. Yikes.

Board games.

Board Game Collection 2019

14. She’s stolen a good number of them from boys she knows.

Hoodies.

13. You don’t have to be a kid to enjoy playing.

Lego. Building sets is very relaxing and I like to put them on display.

12. You really buried the lede there.

I collect yugioh while my brother collects pokemon and sister collects her ex boyfriends hair samples

Edit:Thank you kind stranger for the reddit gold!

11. Wait, this counts? Because…

My wife collects bags

Hand bags, purses, those nice bags you leave the mall with, gift bags, bags from the grocery store etc. We have bags of bags.

10. Folks, we have a hoarder…

Fountain pens!

Also knives but if you start a conversation that way it throws people off.

Also coins. Fucking love silver coins.

Also stamps

Also comics

I’m bad at not collecting things.

9. Okay I want to see all of these.

I collect documents from the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s. A lot of the stuff I have are diaries and legal documents.

8. Nerdy, but also cool!

I like collecting rare/old coins. An entire section of my basement is dedicated to my coin collection. My rarest is a $20 gold liberty head coin dating 1859, and I have a few seperate boxes for the more common old coins, such as wheat pennies, silver nickels, silver dimes, and silver quarters, and I have a mini box for silver half dollars. The rest I put on display in air and water tight clear plastic cases.

7. Every hobby deserves this much passion.

Coins!!!! I worked at a very popular LEGO Store where it was a common tourist destination for people all over the world and sometimes when people would take their change out to pay, they’d have coins from their country in the handful of American coins, and my eyes would always light up and I’d be like “OOOHH! What kind are those!!” and quite a few really awesome customers have let me have their country’s change!

One guy gave me EIGHT different coins from his country! I was in awe!! Another woman, whom I worked with knew I loved coins of all sorts, and when she went on a trip, she brought me back a bag of special coins from her travels! She even paid money to get me a unique square-shaped coin.

When I went to Europe, I visited 6 countries. Most of them used Euros, but London used Pounds. I left Europe with a bunch of cool new coins, AND EVEN BETTER, the guy I sat next to on the plane home DIDN’T want his coins! He gave me a sandwhich baggy half full of coins I already had, AND coins I never even came across. Like a couple coins called Krones, from Danmark, which have a cool hole right in the center of them.

I have a large jar in my room that I keep adding neat coins to, even old metal chuckie cheese coins. ??

6. The sales will get you every time.

Unplayed* video games on Steam.

5. You’ve gotta keep busy!

Hobbies, loads of them, I get wee obsessions with doing things and spend a fortune doing them for about 6 months to a year then I just put all the stuff away and move on to the next hobby.

4. Someone else will be thrilled.

hawaiian shirts.

i’ve got over 1,000.

but i’ve decided that the time has come to divest myself of A LOT of them.

3. I threw them away when I ran out of room on my fridge.

Magnets of the cities/countries I’ve been to.

2. Serious question, though, how do you store them?

Fuckin mugs bro, the more obscure the better. Whatever passion or interest you could have, there’s probably a mug for that. I like mugs that have fallen to the wayside This Houston Mug? Oh I’ve never been but i saw at a yard sale so I copped

1. Such cool stories.

Mainly books. But to a lesser degree (I have just a few pieces) antique pottery from a pottery place that used to be in my mother’s hometown over a century ago.

I get it, because you can pry any one of my books out of my cold dead hands.

Do you collect something? What is it, and how did it start? Let us know in the comments!
