Woman Won’t Allow Her Mother-in-Law Watch Her Son. Is She Wrong?

You’re not watching my kid!

You know that any story that includes this line is gonna be ugly.

A young woman took to Reddit’s “Am I the *sshole?” page to air her grievances about the situation she’s dealing with regarding her mother-in-law.

Let’s see what happened.

AITA For not wanting my MIL to watch my son?

“My (27f) son is three months old. My husband (34m) and I tried for three years to have a baby and suffered two miscarriages in 2019 that were devastating.

We live in an area where COVID restrictions have lifted, so we are slowly introducing our baby to family. We have introduced him to my MIL, and since then she’s been very pushy about babysitting him for us.

The issue is, my husbands family is very chaotic. His stepbrother is a heroin addict who has robbed their family home on several occasions and has the tendency to hide his needles around the house. He doesn’t live there, but my MIL has not stopped him from coming around.

My husbands sister lives at the family home. She does not work or pay rent, and she has a big jealousy issue with my husband. He goes over to the house on a regular basis to help with yard work, etc. And she always makes a scene about not wanting him there.

Last October when I was eight months pregnant, I was dropping my husband off at his moms to clean the gutters for her. His sister came home while I was in the driveway and started screaming at my husband about how they don’t need his help. She was triggered by me blocking her spot. My husband pointed out that he wouldn’t need to come by if she stepped up and helped my MIL.

She then said that she hopes I have another miscarriage, which was disgusting and hurtful. As always, MIL stuck up for her and said she didn’t mean it.

At this point, there’s too much chaos in the house and I don’t feel like it’s a safe place for my baby, especially without my husband and I. My MIL doesn’t understand this at all. I know she isn’t responsible for her stepsons addiction and her daughters awfulness, but I don’t trust her judgment. AITA?

Some people are also questioning why my husbands sister has such a hate on for him. She’s been like this since they were kids, according to many people in the family.

In my opinion, he’s the only one that calls her on her shi*t, and she doesn’t know how to handle her emotions.”

And here’s how folks on Reddit responded to this story.

This person said that the woman’s mother-in-law is obviously a doormat and that she doesn’t have to comply with her wishes if she doesn’t want to.

Another reader said that the woman is under no obligation to let anyone, not even her mother-in-law, watch her kid unsupervised if she doesn’t want to.

This reader said that this just sounds like a bad situation all around and that the woman shouldn’t even let her child near her in-laws.

Another individual argued that if she does agree to let her mother-in-law watch her child, everything needs to be in writing and she needs to be very careful about every little detail.

And lastly, this person thinks that the mother-in-law may be well-meaning, but she obviously has a few screws loose and can even be considered delusional.

Would you let this mother-in-law watch your kid?

People Discuss Selfless Thing Folks Did For Them Without Realizing It

Sometimes in life, people will do things for you that really touch you in a special way and they don’t even realize it.

In fact, you’ve probably done things like this many times in your life and really made someone’s day and you never even knew.

What’s the most selfless thing someone did for you that they are unaware of?

Take a look at these stories from folks on AskReddit.

1. Car wreck.

“I was driving and hit another car.

He was stopped to turn and I simply wasn’t paying attention. I rear-ended his car at about 30 miles per hour. Set off my cars air bags. I managed to pull over to the side, he completed his turn. I was in shock and blundered right into the highway.

He ran out, pulled me to safety and as I’m sobbing and apologizing, he just gave me a big hug and kept telling it’s ok, we’re ok, cars can be fixed. He was so sweet and calm when I was a complete mess.

Found out from my co-worker a week later, the gentlemen I hit had lost his wife to cancer the week before.

Just….wow.”

2. There’s another way.

“When I was in grade 3 my teacher invited me to have dinner with her and her family. My family life was not good.

I never had a dad. My mom is an alcoholic (She has been sober now for 30 years). I did not know what a normal family was like until that dinner and night at her house. It was just so calm and stable.

I remembered that day like it was yesterday. It was almost 40 years ago. It made me realize that there was another way to exist.”

3. Compassion and understanding.

“My daughter has a progressive neurological issue that is slowly taking away her right side. A few years ago, when she was 12 and could still ride a bike, we were riding to a place to watch fireworks on the 4th of July.

She was struggling to ride and was somewhat unsteady and couldn’t make quick moves. We weren’t riding far. As she was riding by a new Mini Cooper, she was struggling to keep her bike straight and her handle bar hit the side view mirror of the guys Mini. He was in the car and and just smiled and waved us on saying everything was fine.

I think he had a sense that my daughter had to work extra hard to ride her bike. After we moved out of the way, I went to thank the guy but he drove off. I know she broke the glass on his mirror, I heard it. I’ll never forget the guys face and how compassionate and understanding he was.”

4. A nice gesture.

“I have a genetic condition that makes me look rather awful. People are often uncomfortable around me. I get it, totally – but still, it hurts.

One night, I was a church activity, and they told everyone that they could go target shooting (I know….weird). That’s not my thing, and so I just stayed by the campfire. After everyone left, a girl stayed there with me and just talked.

As we were talking, a few bugs came and landed on my face, and she brushed them away – like it was the most normal thing in the world. People never touch me at all – or at least not without fear.

I know that is not really doing much – but I think that she must have gone through a lot in her life – in order to be around someone like me, and not be afraid.

It’s been years since that happened, and I still get that ache in the throat just thinking about it.”

5. Still think about it.

“I was severely depressed at that time and I was sitting outside in the veranda on a bench when my 4 year old cousin came and stood on the bench and just hugged me.

I asked her what are you doing and she replied, “maya korchi” which means “showing you love”.

I still think about it when I am feeling down.

6. Tea time.

“I’m a nurse in a public hospital and every day, no matter how s**t my shift is going, I look forward to my morning tea.

This consists of a banana and a very strong coffee. Simple, but a puts the spring in my step. Anyway one morning I LOST my banana. Could not find it. I was having a rough morning and really needed my banana. Anyway I just got on with it and went on with my day, albeit a little bit sulky haha.

About 20 minutes later an orderly comes up to me holding a banana he had gone all the way to another floors kitchen to get for me. He was like “I heard you lost your banana, I know you needed that. Go have a break, eat this and I’ll listen out for your call bells.”

This was over two years ago and probably seems so small, but I still think about this and it makes me so fuzzy to know the compassion and kindness of the people I work with. What a legend.”

7. Almost homeless.

“My ex’s mother took me in for a few months and refused to accept any money from me. My ex didn’t tell her how bad my situation was.

If she hadn’t taken me in I would literally have been homeless. I had already asked about emergency housing at the local council offices and had gone to the homeless shelter. Neither could help me.

All because my mother went back on her word and said I could move in with her if I couldn’t pay rent that month on the house she owned when I was temporarily unemployed.”

8. You can see again.

“An organ donor saved the sight in my left eye when I was 20. The law in Australia prevents me from ever knowing who the donor was but I hope their family knows how grateful I am and are proud of them.

When I talk to people about organ donation, a significant proportion of people tell me that they leave corneas unticked so they won’t be donated. I will always tell the story of my donor and how much it meant to me.

No it didn’t save my life, but as an artist in a visual medium, I owe my career and success to someone I never knew.”

9. Never saw them again.

“I was having a really bad depressive episode and this man and their dog were walking down the street. I was waiting for my food and considering just walking saying f**k it and walking down to one of the bridges on the river.

The mans dog was walking with her leash dragging on the floor, and she came up to me and sat down on my feet and looked up at me and refused to move for about 5 minutes.

I don’t know if the man realized I needed this or what, but he didn’t say or do anything as I stood there crying and petting his dog.

When the dog decided she was done, she got up and they walked off and I never saw them again.”

10. Thank you.

“When I was 20 I had to have major surgery and was facing a life with a chronic illness.

When I was home recovering a friend came by and put me in her car and took me on a random drive down to the beach and just all over. It was so relaxing and healing for my mind.

I’m a grandparent now and have had challenges but have been fine and I’ll never forget what she did. Thank you Marie.”

11. Lunch money.

“While I was in college, I couldn’t afford groceries most of the time so a few of my friends would buy me lunch with their dorm meal cards.

I’m not close with any of them anymore but I still think about what they did for me a lot.”

12. Doing your best.

“I was on welfare in my early 20s and one worker would take time out of her day to listen to me and do everything she could to help me out.

She was only supposed to have about 15 minutes with me but she’d regularly stay with me for like 45 minutes. She helped me so much just by believing me and treating me like a person who was trying their best.”

People Challenged Her Right to Wear a Metallica Shirt, so a Woman Pulled Out a Guitar and Set Them Straight

If you’re going to put yourself out there online, you expect that you will have to deal with some level of haters.

It comes with the territory.

The trolls come out, armed with keyboards and masked by anonymity.

And when that day comes, I hope we can all handle it with next-level grace and grit, like Zaria Joyner did.

Last December, Zaria, a young musician, posted a video to her TikTok account @zariasmusic describing the difficulties of being a woman trying to break into the industry, and asking her followers to stream her songs on Spotify.

@zariasmusic

The song is called “Romanticized” by Zaria let me know what y’all think #music #spotify #artist #studio #rap

♬ original sound – Zaria

A small, unexpected detail in the video brought in the trolls, not because she was asking for help, but because she generally presents herself as an R&B musician, and she had the audacity to wear a Metallica t-shirt.

But then… a troll rolled into the comments.

@paytonnsmith said: “Name 3 Metallica songs.” And others followed the troll’s lead.

Undeterred by the haters, Zaria responded in the most amazing way possible.

Instead of naming 3 songs, she played them. She may be soft spoken, but she absolutely shreds on guitar.

@zariasmusic

Reply to @paytonnsmith I hope this video finds the #Metallica fans lol, not my best #guitar playing but that wasn’t really the point #guitarist

♬ original sound – Zaria

With chops like that, you have to wonder how long she’s been dedicated to her craft.

Turns out, Zaria was practically born with a guitar in her hands.

@zariasmusic

follow your dreams kids. @sullyguitars #guitar #guitarist #rock #metal #GEICOLipSync

And she always knew that she was going to be a star some day:

@zariasmusic

Me in the first picture would be so proud of me now, I’m dropping my first rock song very soon so follow my Spotify ❤ #guitar #rock #metal #emo #punk

♬ Dead Man Walking – Brent Faiyaz

Lots of Zaria’s TikTok videos show fun little snippets from her song-making process. Like this one:

Or recordings of her laying down backing vocals for famous singers like Ariana Grande.

@zariasmusic

If you guys like this drop a like and comment and check my music out on Spotify! #arianagrande #positions #Bye2020 #NewYearNewMiO

♬ original sound – Zaria

And Zaria understands how the TikTok logarithms work, so she’s definitely willing to engage with her critics, as she did in this video response to people who disapprove of her use of auto-tuning.

@zariasmusic

#duet with @wshanelance thanks Shane for teaching these plebs a lil something about the music industry #autotune #rap #producer

♬ original sound – SHANE LANCE

She apparently took the whole experience in stride and is “taking requests, I guess.”

She added…

“I really just thought it would be funny and I didn’t expect the response that the video received.

The supportive comments just kept rolling in.”

Zaria says that Metallica was one of her earliest musical influences, and the reason that she learned to play guitar in the first place, a background that is now helping her to redefine the genre of R&B.

As she likes to put it, her sound is more like R&R&B (Rock & Rhythm & Blues).

@zariasmusic

Reply to @soultun3 What do y’all think? This comment has me weak ?? #randb #blues #rock #guitar #guitarsolo

♬ original sound – Zaria

She loves what she’s doing, and she’s proud of her work. But she’s quick to remind viewers that it’s a tough industry to break into.

Check out her Link Tree from which you can stream her songs on Spotify or Apple Music and see for yourself.

I’d say she totally showed the haters. I wish I could ever have a comeback that solid.

Plant-Based “Stem Cells” Could Possibly Drive an Environmental Revolution

For the last couple of years, my family has been making a conscious effort to buy less plastic.

Certainly we try to avoid single-use plastics, but even for things that we’ll use again and again we try to find more durable, organic or metal alternatives.

But of course, there’s often an environmental cost to wooden items, too. It presents a conundrum.

Until now. Are you ready to have your mind blown? Lab. Grown. Furniture.

I warned you.

Wooden furniture is gorgeous, and plant fibers are supremely useful for other everyday items too, like clothing.

That’s why bamboo has become so popular–it grows quickly, with less environmental impact.

But now a PhD candidate at MIT, Ashley Beckwith, and her co-author, Luis Fernando Velásquez-García, have a brilliant plan to reduce waste and environmental impacts even further by growing wood in useful shapes (like 2 by 4’s) right in a lab.

The MIT research team has been working with zinnia tissue, and they published their findings recently in the Journal of Cleaner Production.

As Fast Company reports, their goal is to:

…quickly produce in a lab what would take decades to grow in nature. From there, they could even coax wood tissue to grow into fully-formed shapes—like, say, a table—in order to mitigate the environmental harm of the logging and construction industries.

It’s not a completely new concept. Velásquez-García, a scientist in the university’s Microsystems Technology Lab, explains it in pretty simple terms.

“The plant cells are similar to stem cells. They have the potential to be many things.”

And it’s not just human stem cells. Other scientists have had similar success with lab grown meat products.

So isolating the ability to reduce plants down to a version of a stem cell is just the first step.

Like the meat manufactures who want to grow only the most desirable parts of the animal, Beckwith and team have similar plans for their saplings.

“Trees grow in tall cylindrical poles, and we rarely use tall cylindrical poles in industrial applications.

So you end up shaving off a bunch of material that you spent 20 years growing and that ends up being a waste product.”

Rather than stopping with just growing trees, the team could grow planks, or, rather like 3D printing, they could even guide the development of the plant fiber into the exact shape for its intended purpose.

Of course not every manufacturer has a noble drive to safe the planet.

That’s why this new process is so exciting. It’s so easy, that when compared with the cost of logging, transportation, and everything that goes into cutting down trees to shape them into boards, lab grown trees could actually come out on top, at a lower cost!

Image credit: Lukasz Szmigiel via Unsplash

If the idea of lab-grown veggies freaks you out though, don’t worry. The folks in charge don’t see this being a process that is used to grow food. More like the kinds of plants used to make clothes and industrial materials. There are so many things that could be made from biodegradable plant fibers! Deforestation could become a thing of the past! At least due to human consumption.

How’s that for exciting? Did it blow your mind?

Four Strangers All Named Paul O’Sullivan Formed a Band

If there’s one thing we’ve learned during the pandemic, it’s that we should get down on our knees and thank whoever we worship for the advent of Zoom and Facetime.

It’s allowed people to keep in touch with their family members and friends all across the world during quarantine and has even resulted in a lot of strangers getting to know each other.

And you never know, some of these strangers might even start a band with each other…and that’s what happened when four men from around the globe all named Paul O’Sullivan started jamming together!

Yes, you read that right.

It all started when Paul O’Sullivan of Baltimore, Maryland, was adding other people with the same name as friends on Facebook and he noticed that several of them were musicians, just like himself.

So he reached out to a bunch of other Paul O’Sullivans about playing some music and eventually, three other Pauls agreed and they started jamming…under the name “The Paul O’Sullivan Band”, of course.

Two of the Pauls live in the U.S, one in England, and one in the Netherlands.

The Paul in the band who is from Manchester, England, said,

“In this world, sometimes you think everything’s been done.

Particularly with the internet, everything’s been covered, everything’s been done. Well actually, this felt like a first. And it still feels like a first.”

Check out one of their music videos below!

That’s so cool!

Learn About the Landmine-Detecting Rat That Received a Medal for Bravery

Most of us think that rats are dirty, invasive rodents that creep around alleys and our trash cans, freaking us out. Which is true, but rats are also very intelligent animals and they supposedly make great pets.

My eyes were opened when I read the book Rats by Robert Sullivan and let me tell you, they are pretty impressive creatures. And here’s another reason to like these little fellas.

Meet Magawa, a rat that has been awarded a gold medal for exceptional bravery by the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) in the UK for detecting landmines.

Magawa now joins the ranks of dogs, horses, pigeons, and cats that have received the prestigious honor over the past 77 years that the organization has been giving out awards.

He was trained to detect landmines by an organization called APOPO and so far has been able to sniff out 39 landmines along with 28 other pieces of unexploded weaponry.

Because of his work, over 1.5 million square feet of land in Cambodia has been deemed safe for the local population. And Magawa even received a miniature medal to wear around his neck for his efforts!

Amy Dickin of the PDSA , said,

“Because of the impacts COVID has had on the UK—and wider world—our original presentation plans had to be completely re-worked.

Meaning Magawa actually brings two firsts to PDSA—the first rat honored with a PDSA Medal and our first-ever virtual presentation.

We’re thrilled to be shining the spotlight on his amazing work and can’t wait for everyone to see him in action!”

Check out this video about Magawa’s great work!

Greyhound Lets Runaway Kids Return Home for Free

It’s hard to wrap your head around, but an estimated 2.8 million children run away from home in the United States every year. And it’s even more staggering that the majority of them are between 10 and 14-years-old.

But it’s a sad truth in this country.

So it’s good news that Greyhound works in coordination with the National Runaway Safeline to help kids get back home to safety.

The Home Free Program allows young people from the ages of 12 to 21 a free ride home to reunite with their parents or guardians.

All that young people need to do to qualify for the program is to call 1-800-RUNAWAY (1-800-786-2929) to see if they are eligible for a free ticket home.

As you can probably imagine, kids who run away from home can find themselves in all kinds of precarious and dangerous situations, so we want all young people who have a chance to go back to a safe environment to take advantage of this opportunity.

FYI, there are a couple of stipulations about the program. In order to get a free trip home, there must be a runaway report filed for a person.

Also, a ticket can only be used twice by the same young person.

Here is a link to Greyhound stations around the country.

Here’s that number one more time for kids to call: 1-800-RUNAWAY (1-800-786-2929).

Let’s hope a lot of young people take up the company on this offer.

Have you seen any good stories lately that you think we’d enjoy?

A Pet Groomer Shared Videos About Things All Animal Owners Should Know About

We might think that we know our pets well and we know what’s best for them, but when professional groomers talk, we should all listen to what they have to say.

A groomer in Canada named Vanessa De Prophetis has made several TikTok videos for pet owners highlighting things that she thinks they need to know about their pets.

This video she shared shows some behind-the-scenes realities of pet grooming and how it’s not all fun and games. And also how it isn’t easy by any stretch of the imagination.

@girlwithedogs

Don’t forget to tip your groomer #petlife #foryou #fyp #viral #foryourpage #dogsoftiktok #petthings

♬ Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked – Cage The Elephant

One video she posted is full of tips about how to properly brush your pets, which every owner should know about.

And here’s another video from De Prophetis where she talks about some of the things that pet groomers might not be comfortable telling owners about their animals.

@girlwithedogs

Sadly this has happened more than once. And one time…there was worms in it.? #petlife #foryourpage #dogsoftiktok #viral #fyp #groomersoftiktok

♬ Splish Splash – Good Timers

In this video, she talks about how it can be hard for her to get her point across to pet owners when she talks about their health care needs.

@girlwithedogs

The struggle with skin allergies and ear infections is real. Don’t give up trying to find solutions❤ #dogsoftiktok #foryou #fyp #groomersoftiktok

An Entitled Karen Tried to Force This Person Out of Guitar Lesson

Karens really never cease to amaze me.

They’re rude, they’re crude, they’re ignorant, and most of all…they’re ENTITLED.

And this story that someone shared on Reddit is a real beauty.

Let’s see what happened…

Guitar Karen DEMANDS my time slot because her son needs “something to do after school”.

“This happened a couple of days ago and I thought you guys would enjoy it. As a bit of backstory, I play the electric guitar. I take lessons from a teacher that is absolutely the best in the area at what he does. He’s been doing it for about 30 years now so he’s really, really good. Understandably, he’s also really, really booked up.

When COVID hit and everyone started doing online classes for school, he lost a bunch of students because they’d typically go to his class after school and since they weren’t in school or doing extracurricular activities, their parents I guess decided to yank them from guitar lessons too.

One of the things that makes my teacher awesome is that he tends to give scheduling priority to his older students (like me, 41) because they don’t give him the headache of having to manage every little thing between this and that thing for school. It kind of sucks for parents but he’s had enough of the headaches of rearranging everyone’s life because little Johnny has to play his leading role of being a rock in the school play.

Now this matters because now that kids are starting to go back into the classrooms where I live, parents are blowing up his phone trying to schedule their little darlings back into lessons, while us older folks have been dutifully attending (or doing online lessons) and paying the whole time. So if you’ve been doing that all this time and you’ve got the 3:30 slot and you like it, that’s where you stay.

This matters because of Guitar Karen. Guitar Karen’s son used to take lessons but she pulled him out for the last 9 months or so. In-school classes are starting up, and Guitar Karen wants as little to do with her kid as possible, so she has apparently enrolled him in every possible after school activity that exists. I know this because my teacher rolls his eyes as our lesson is about to begin because his phone is pinging like crazy.

I thought it might be an emergency or something so when he returned to the room, I said, your phone has been going crazy (he normally turns it off during our session) and he just mutters something and turns it off, talking about how this woman has signed her kid up for track, baseball, art, band and now guitar and in order to ensure he has something to do every single day of the week, he absolutely MUST have this 4:00 slot.

You can imagine where this is going. Guess who’s slot that is. Mine.

I’m super flexible with regard to the days of the week, just not the time of day (because I work until then). I told him as much but he’s like “no, I’m not moving you, don’t worry.” He turns off his phone and we continue on our lesson. Within like five minutes, his computer is going Ping! Ping! pingpingpingping! and he’s like “holy mother of f*ck.”and shuts the lid.

Blissful silence for the remainder of our lesson. Until he opens the classroom door and there stands Guitar Karen: A kind of heavyset woman with her lips pursed like she’s gonna give you a kiss, and her brow looking like it has permanently stuck itself in the scowl position and a “Mama Bear” t-shirt on (I sh*t you not)

“YOU!” she yells at me. Now I’ve never seen this lady in my life but she’s got no mask on so my instinctive reaction is to social distance my *ss right the hell away from her but she just Godzilla stomps her way in, knocking over a music stand and sending papers everywhere. She turns and shouts at the teacher.

“WHY WON’T YOU GIVE MY SON THIS TIME SPOT. HE NEEDS IT. YOU NEED TO RESCHEDULE YOUR OTHER STUDENTS AND STOP SINGLING ME OUT BECAUSE MY SON HAS OTHER ACTIVITIES.”

The poor guy can’t get a word in edgewise. She’s standing in the doorway so I can’t leave.

She looks me up and down. Me, who is very much a t-shirt and jeans kind of lady and is wearing a shirt that says “I like heavy metal, coffee, cats, and maybe 3 people.” and is like I BET YOU DON’T EVEN HAVE A JOB. YOU’RE PROBABLY SOME WASHED OUT COLLEGE DROP OUT. WHY’D YOU PICK THIS TIME SLOT ANYWAY. IS IT BECAUSE YOU KNEW SOMEONE LIKE ME MIGHT NEED IT? YOU NEED TO GIVE IT TO MY SON.

I also can’t say a d*mn word because this woman just won’t shut up.

Now let me reiterate that my teacher is the chillest guy on the planet. But he nearly died last year from sepsis on top of the whole COVID thing, so he’s REALLY understandably p*ssed when someone gets in your face and is stabbing your chest with their long-nailed finger and spraying insults without a mask on.

He gets between me and her and says YOU NEED TO BACK UP OR GET OUT. They take their confrontation out into the hallway. He tells me to go ahead and leave and he’ll handle her. I hear him tell this lady.

“Listen, loves_spain has been with me for years and I’d better never hear you insult her or any of my other students ever again. Your behavior is disgusting and you need to leave the premises now before I call security.” (We don’t have security in the building but she doesn’t need to know that — he was so fired up, I think HE could’ve landed her flat on her *ss in that moment).

She turns completely meek and is like “What about lessons for my son?” And at this point the teacher was like “absolutely not.” And she’s like “but he needs this!” and the teacher said “not my problem.” and acted as if he were dialing security on his phone. She scuttled out of there as I was leaving the parking lot. I wanted to give my teacher the biggest high-five.

He later told me he didn’t hear from her since then, but he thinks this isn’t the last encounter. I imagine she’s the type of person that will come down there every weekday at that time to berate whichever poor student has that spot because her son obviously NEEEEDS IT!!!

Here’s how folks on Reddit reacted after reading the story.

This person said that they think the guitar teacher was a hero in this scenario.

Another reader said that the guitar teacher should put the woman and her kids on blast for not following safety protocol.

Finally, a person argued that Karen’s kid in this situation seems to be way over-indexed and it’s probably the mom here who is making her kids do too many activities.
