10 Tips for Dealing With Grief Around the Holidays

For many, the holidays are a really hard time. People who have lost loved ones or had other difficult experiences in their lives tend to get depressed around the holiday season, as they reflect on their past and relive old memories.

If you are one of the many people who deals with grief and depression around the holidays, here are 10 tips you should consider to try to alleviate your pain.

1. Time and space.

Loneliness

Give yourself time and space to deal with your emotions. It’s okay to feel pain and loneliness if you’ve experienced loss. Treat yourself well and give yourself a break. You’re only human.

2. Spend time alone.

The holiday season can be very overwhelming for many people, so you need to find time to spend alone so you can work on yourself and get away from it all. Do what you need to do to recharge your batteries: take a walk, sit in a park, and if you want to leave parties or events early, go ahead and do it.

3. Escape route.

Party

Have an escape plan if you attend parties or events that you know might trigger you and make you sad, emotional, or angry. It’s okay if you need to bolt, just be ready and make sure you have all your belongings so you don’t have to make a return appearance.

4. No thanks.

It’s okay to say no to parties, events, or any other kinds of invitations that you think might make you feel uncomfortable or might cause you to lose control. Remember, it’s up to you.

5. Honor their memory.

Thinking

Some people choose to celebrate the traditions that their lost loved ones did to honor their memory. This can help people to remember the good times and to be nostalgic.

6. Start new traditions.

Instead of trying to recreate the traditions that you enjoyed with your departed loved ones, try to create some new ones. This practice can help you deal with the grief.

7. Get out of town.

Road trip near Sykkylven

Go somewhere new or take a road trip. Get your mind off of the familiar and the places that are associated with your loved ones who are no longer with you. A new atmosphere may do you some good.

8. Fulfillment.

Focus on some activities that you know will fulfill you and make you feel good. Volunteer. Read. Exercise. Walk your dog. Try to make some new friends. Whatever makes you feel good, do it.

9. Totally random.

Smile

Practice random acts of kindness. Help out other people and try to better, not bitter. In other words, live your life to honor the people who are gone and do your best. Part of that can be helping out strangers.

10. Remember the good times.

It might sound easy, but it can be tough. Try to remember the positive memories and happy times you spent with your departed loved ones instead of suppressing all thoughts about them. In the long run, it will help.

And while you’re at it, listen to this short but sweet song by the great Willie Nelson.

Enjoy your holidays, everyone.

“Pinch of Grinch” Cookies Will Be on Shelves During the Holidays

I LOVE the type of holiday-themed food and drinks that only come out for special occasions. It doesn’t matter if it’s for Halloween, Easter, 4th of July, Valentine’s Day: if it’s fun and only available for a limited time, I’m all in.

And there have been a whole lot of these products to choose from this year. Of course, there is the now-annual tradition of the phenomenon known as the Pumpkin Spice Latte…what was life like before it?!?!

This year, we’ve also seen an IHOP menu full of spooky treats and a jet-black Icee drink at AMC Theaters in conjunction with the release of the new, animated version of The Addams Family. You know, fun stuff…

Well, I have some great news for you if you agree with me on this front: Pinch of Grinch cookies for the holiday season! The green sugar cookie dough is topped with a red heart. Yummy!

The packs from Nestlé Toll House cost $2.99 and will be on the shelves at Target, Kroger, and other select retailers.

Each package contains 20 pre-cut cookies, so all you have to do is pop these babies in the oven and you’ll be munching on these green treats in no time.

Hopefully, the Grinch himself approves as well…but you never know with that fella…

UPDATE: It seems that Nestlé recalled many of their products recently, so the Pinch of Grinch cookie dough is not currently in stores. So we’ll all just have to see how this situation plays out…

We’ll be waiting…

Earn $1,000 by Watching 24 Hallmark Christmas Movies in 12 Days

I have a feeling a lot of people are gonna be into this.

For some people, this would be a dream come true. For others…maybe not so much.

Internet service provider CenturyLink is offering to pay one lucky person $1,000 to binge-watch 24 Hallmark Christmas movies in 12 days. What a deal!

The website says:

“‘Tis the Season … to Get Paid to Watch Christmas Movies and it looks like all your Christmas wishes may just come true. We’re looking for a lover of all things Christmas, G-Rated romcoms, and too-close-to-home family dramas to watch 24 Hallmark Christmas movies in 12 days. If you think that’s you, we’ll give you $1,000 to critique a lineup of festive guilty pleasures.”

The site also says:

“You know how to work the Gram, Twitter, or Facebook. We want someone who’s willing to document their Hallmark marathon with their followers.

We want you to have opinions—lots of them! Think the grumpy Grandpa turned jolly Santa was a little overdone? Felt like the plot was a bit half-baked? Be as honest as possible in your review.”

Here’s what you have to do to win: every time you watch one of the films, get on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, include the hashtags #CountdowntoChristmas and #HallmarkDreamJob in every post. Also, you have to watch all 24 films within 12 days by December 25, 2019.

And you have to fill out the application on this website.

If you win, you’ll get that cold, hard $1,000 and a Hallmark binge-watching package that includes a subscription to a streaming service, hot cocoa (you’ll need that), Christmas cookies, a mini Christmas tree, some fairy lights, and all kinds of Hallmark swag.

Get going! Time’s a wasting!

The marketing gods approve of this scenario BIG TIME.

‘Gremlins’ Is Coming Back to Theaters This December

Gremlins hit theaters in 1984, and it’s safe to say that the horror/comedy film has become a cult classic that a whole lot of people watch around Christmas.

Let’s all have a refresher and watch the original trailer, okay?

If you’re a fan of this fun, freaky, fright-fest, I have great news for you! Gremlins is returning to theaters for one week only: December 5 – December 11.

It makes sense, because the film is set during Christmastime and some consider it a “holiday movie” (omg that scene…you know that one I’m talking about).

If you’ve never seen Joe Dante’s Gremlins, let’s get all caught up. A man buys his son a gift at a store in Chinatown. What does he buy? A ‘mogwai’, an adorable little creature that comes with a few rules. The shopkeeper tells the man not to expose the creature to bright light or water…and don’t feed it after midnight.

Well, you can probably imagine what happens next. I’ll leave the rest up in the air, just in case you’ve never seen it before.

The film will screen in 4DX, which Regal describes as “immersive cinematic experience presents the future of the movie industry.” Or, as one website put it, “4DX at Regal is the ultimate experience involving motion chairs and special effects like wind and rain.”

Which sounds legitimately awesome.

Be sure to check out the Regal Cinemas page to see if and where Gremlins will be playing by you in December.

Do you remember the first time you saw Gremlins? Tell us about it in the comments! And remember, whatever you do, don’t feed them after midnight!

Buy a Tiny Replica of Your House as a Christmas Ornament This Year

Don’t miss out on this!

Christmas ornaments are often sentimental items that get passed down through a family for years. An Etsy shop has the perfect ornament to add to your family’s collection: a tiny replica of your actual house.

The Etsy shop Forever Figurines is run by Samantha Bravoco of Haverhill, Massachusetts. She hand-designs each custom ornament out of polymer clay and acrylic paint. She bases the designs off of customer’s photos of the house.

Some customers choose to get Christmas ornaments that look like their current homes, while others model them after childhood homes or other sentimental places.

Samantha can even add a ribbon with the address of the house and the dates that it was inhabited. For anyone who has to leave behind a beloved family home after many years, this is a great way to hold onto the place in a sentimental way!

Samantha’s Instagram shows that she truly can recreate any type of house, large or small.

These tiny replicas surely take a lot of skill and patience — the current wait time for each order is three months.

“Everything is custom, handmade and hand-painted so they take time and I can only do so many per day,” Samantha told Today.

Samantha started sculpting in 2015 as a hobby.

“I decided to post some work up on Etsy to see if there was any interest from buyers,” she said. “I was featured on WeddingWire in 2016 for my wedding cake figurines and that got the ball rolling quickly.”

She just started making house ornaments last year, but she’s already completed almost 300 so far. She still sculpts cake figurines and pet figurines, too.

One house ornament is $75 and they’re great as year-round gifts in addition to Christmas.

But kudos to her for her expensive taste.”

How Retailers Trick You into Spending Money on Black Friday

Black Friday is almost here, and you know what that means…mass chaos, news reports of people brawling in the aisles of Walmart, and all kinds of other incidents that will make you shake your head and question the direction of the human race.

Buuuuuut, you know and I know that we’re all probably still going to hit some different stores and check out the deals. Who are we kidding?

One thing, though: do your best not to get duped by retailers who are trying to get as much money as possible from you and everyone else on the planet. Keep in mind these ways that businesses get you to spend money on Black Friday when you head out shopping next week.

And good luck out there!

Black Friday is an American tradition that has spread across the globe. It’s the time of year were shops slash their prices, this has often created a feeling of hysteria among shoppers. Every year we see the pictures of people desperately scrapping to get the last TV or parents queuing for hours in the hope that they’ll be able to afford a really special present for their child. In the hopes we can make #blackfriday a little less stressful for our audience, we’ve set up a LIVE blog with all of the best deals that you can buy online. Avoid these chaotic scenes and take your time perusing online with a cup of tea and a biscuit and not pulling some poor woman’s hair because she snatched up the last robotic gizmo! Link in bio! Retailers will try to add “bonuses” to your purchases so you think you’re getting a great deal. For example, they might say you’ll “save more if you buy more” and up the ante for percentages off the more money you spend (10% off $50, 15% off $100, or 20% off $200). Sometimes, it can be hard to say “no” to perceived savings and deals…

2. Slippery coupons

Read the fine print if you’re given any coupons for Black Friday. Consumer analyst Julie Ramhold says, “Often these come with a ton of exclusions. If you’re having to hunt for something to apply it to, it’s probably not worth whatever savings you think you’re getting.”

3. Rebates galore!

A post shared by Marsha Stevens (@marsha_djmsondago) on

Beware of rebates. There, I said it. A lot of businesses are betting on the fact that people will not actually take the time to fill out forms and mail in rebates, so a lot of people end up paying full price for something that they didn’t have to.

4. Doorbusters

A post shared by Tim Lasick (@monster_mechanic78) on

Doorbusters are big discounts on products that are limited and first-come, first-serve for customers. That’s why people camp out overnight in front of stores and beat each other up once they actually get into the store.

The thinking goes that a lot of people will not get their hands on these limited products, BUT they’ll spend money on other products to justify their hours spent outside the store, which might have included an overnighter. Kind of brilliant…

5. Inflating the original prices

Black Friday is all about deals, right? HUGE deals! Well, maybe not…it turns out that a lot of businesses inflate their prices in the weeks leading up to Black Friday so people will think they are getting an enormous discount and it will seem all the more dramatic. So do a little research and see what the products you want cost throughout the year.

Are you going to go all-in on Black Friday, or will you sit back and wait until all the hoopla dies down?
