3. Snack tips

According to the oxford dictionary, the word ‘Snack’ (noun) is: ‘a small amount of food eaten between meals’. – – If one was to embark on a goal to lose fat, they will likely focus their attention on main meals consumed. They may be vigilant in ensuring consumption of calories aligns with their fat loss target. They may also believe that consumption of large quantities of food from main meals holds more significance to the outcome of their goal than that of smaller quantities of food. – – The problem is, sometimes there is no correlation between relatively small amounts of food and it’s native caloric worth. A 115g blueberry muffin represents 5-8 bites of food – and 420 calories. Coffee with milk and 2 tsp of sugar represents a drink – and 60 calories. 75g of fruit and nut mix represents 2 handfuls of dried fruit and nuts – and 360 calories. The Friday represents the day where one feels they deserve 1 or 2 (or 7) treats. The snacking pattern on the left demonstrates how easy it is to consume significant calories from small amounts of food. – – On the right side of this graphic, the weekly total is over 3000 calories less, yet virtually the same volume of food is consumed (minus reduced portions of nuts and custard creams). There is a balance of foods that require similar lengths of time to consume, foods that one may refer to as a treat and foods that are nutritious. There is also an element of intelligence implemented on the Friday by inclusion of a time consuming food (popcorn), whilst still engaging with colleagues and enjoying a Danish pastry. – – When we are hungry, we should eat. But when we are trying to reduce body fat, we should implement awareness and strategy. Adherence to balanced, calorie supportive, satiating main meals should be a priority, but so should adherence to strategically planned (and measured) snacks which also support one’s caloric deficit, satiety and still provide a disco on your tongue with each bite. ?? – – #thefitnesschef #worksnack #snacktime #fatloss #fatlosshelp #nutritioncoach #eatsmart #diettips #diethelp #treat #caloriecounting #portioncontrol #fatlosscoach #snack #losebellyfat #cakes #officesnacks #officefood

5. Liven up your water

6. Sugar quantities in fruit

View this post on Instagram

Tag a friend and hit save to stay informed on the calorie and sugar quantities within this extensive list of fruits. – – Most fruit proposes a plethora of vitamins and minerals to it’s consumer. And whilst the cringeworthy term, ‘nature’s candy’ is descriptively tragic, fruit is a source of sweet tasting whole food than offers micronutrients for overall health, fibre for satiety and water for hydration. – – As you can see, each fruit has a different macro-nutritional make up. Some have more sugar, others have less. Some have more calories, others have less. And (not displayed here), some have more fibre, whilst others have less. – – It is worth noting that sugar extracted from fruit will have the exact same metabolic result as sugar extracted from a snickers. But the combination of sugar and fibre consumed via a whole food (in this case fruit) makes it more likely to satisfy one’s hunger more than food comprising of sugar and minimal fibre. However, one’s attainment of satiety will differ from another’s. – – Fruit is a more nutritious, calorie sparse source of energy than confectionary. But it is important to realise that caloric values of any food count towards overall energy balance. Fibre density per calories consumed may make one ‘feel fuller’ and therefore aid adherence to overall energy targets – especially calorie deficits. – – Thus, consuming any item of ‘sweet’ tasting food is a valid option, but those which provide more satiety after consumption may support one’s energy balance more, whilst also delivering a host of nutritious advantages at the same time. ? – – P.s. which is your favourite fruit? ? – – #thefitnesschef #fruit #sugar #calories #berries #nutrients #snacktime #snack #vegan #caloriescount #eatsmart #flexiblediet #fruitsalad #micronutrients #avocado #fatlosstips #dieting #lowcaloriesnack #fruitbowl

7. Swaps!

View this post on Instagram

The point of consuming food is to remain alive. The point of controlling one’s intake of food is to manage physique and overall health. The point of consuming fewer calories is to reduce body fat across one’s composition. But one constant in all of the above should be one’s enjoyment of food. – – When an individual embarks on fat loss, each of the above are important. One must enjoy their energy consumption, be aware of energy intake in relation to their energy output, and consistently ensure that hat they are in a state of sustainable caloric deficit. To ensure progress, one may have to change and adjust their dietary habits. But instead of completely changing one’s diet, adherence may be more likely if one makes small changes over time. For example: consuming the same volume of lower calorie foods/drinks that are essentially the same foods/drinks. – – This graphic shows two groups of foods/drinks. One group contains over double the calorie amount of the other, yet quantity of both remains the same (apart from the freddo). Crucially, the lower calorie versions resemble the same taste/experiment as their high calorie counterparts (or very similar). – – Whilst consumption of lower calorie versions may not be immediately significant, they can be over a period of time. For example, if one swapped daily consumption of 300ml of whole milk for semi skimmed milk for 1 year, they would consume 17520 fewer calories whilst experiencing is minimally compromised. – – One must make an informed choice in the knowledge that lower calorie items may contain less of a particular macronutrient. And in the case of low calorie beverages, awareness that sweeteners are included. – – Losing fat is not straightforward. It requires a change of habits. But if an individual recognizes opportunities to make small changes which reap big long term rewards, it’s seems short sighted not to take them. ? – – #thefitnesschef #fatlosshelp #fatlossdiet #fatlosstips #halotop #eatsmart #meat #lowcalorie #calories #caloriedeficit #caloriecounting #losefat #diet #dieting #smartchoices #flexiblediet #nutritionfacts #losebellyfat

12. Low cal booze

View this post on Instagram

Tag a mate who’s likes a festive drink, but may want to save alcoholic calories whilst staying informed ??? – – Whilst my heading is technically misleading in that alcohol as a single organic compound can never be ‘low calorie’, common reference to alcoholic drinks will always be done so through the term ‘alcohol’. For those pedantic nutritionists/scientist out there, this post should probably go under the alias of ‘low calorie drinks containing alcohol’. But you’d fall asleep before completing the heading… So f*ck that. – – Whilst alcohol is not a macronutrient like protein, carbohydrate and fat, it still contains energy. 7 calories per gram to be exact. Given it’s calorie density, it’s easy to understand how alcohol related calorie consumption can accumulate. – – The absence of nutritional value from these calories means that no potential behavioural benefits arise from its consumption (apart from the ability to turn in to a courageous sleaze or superstar DJ). Though there is evidence to suggest that the thermogenic response during alcohol digestion is around 20% of total calories. However, considering the intricacies of TEF with regard to alcohol usage is pretty futile when you’re 12 deep at 3am, dragging you legs along the pavement with ripped jeans, one shoe and an imminently collapsing kebab. – – If fat loss or maintenance is the goal, surely it’s worth considering drinks which taste the same/very similar, but have a reduced calorie worth. In most cases, the alcohol density remains the same, but changes to additional ingredients lower the overall calorie value. – – This way you can still socialise, enjoy the festive period and relax. But you can also get closer to your fitness goal at the same time?. – – #thefitnesschef #alcohol #lowcalorie #nightoutfit #nightoutonthetown #nightoutwithfriends #losefat #calories #caloriescount #caloriecounting #dieting #drinking #beer #wine #vodka #diet #caloriecontrol #fatlosscoach #nutritiontips

Do toddlers have to eat meat? ?I get about 5 DMs a week from moms saying their kiddos won't eat meat. I've been doing a series on food battles here. I don't have a real quote for you, but I'm lumping them all together into "Help! My child won't eat meat!" ??⠀ ~⠀ And actually, your child doesn't have to eat meat to be healthy! You may want your child to eat meat and you may not. Either is fine. If you want them to learn to like meat, you can serve them very small cut up bites of meat to explore and maybe eat. One bite is a big win for tough-to-chew meat! ⠀ ~⠀ Look at all the different ways kids can get protein! While meat may play a role in getting your child the zinc, protein, and iron that they need, your child can also get those things from other foods while they are learning to like meat. And if you're wondering how much protein they "officially" need, here are the numbers:⠀ ~⠀ Protein needs in kids:⠀⠀ 0.5 g/lb/day for 1-3 year olds⠀⠀ 0.43 g/lb/day in 4-13 year olds⠀⠀ ~⠀⠀ For my kids, that's about 15 g per day. Most kids get more in the United States. ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ By @kids.eat.in.color .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #nutritionist #vegetarianprotein #vegetariankids #veggiekids #nutritioncoaching #registereddietitian #dietitian #nutritionfirst #nutritionists #nutritiongoals #kidfood #healthykids #nutritionexpert #nutritioniskey #nutritiontip #pediatricdietitian #lunchbox #lunchboxideas #kidslunchbox #kidslunches #kidslunchideas #kidslunch #lunchideas #healthylunch #schoollunch #lunchboxinspiration #kids #kidseatincolor

16. Calcium

View this post on Instagram

⠀ FOOD SOURCES OF CALCIUM ⠀ ⠀ Calcium is an important mineral, we actually have more calcium in our body than any other mineral! ⠀ 99% of our calcium is in our bones and teeth. A small amount is absorbed into the blood and is essential for muscle function, nerve signalling and to keep our heart beating ? ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⚠Every muscle contraction in our body requires calcium! ⠀ Our body tightly controls the amount of calcium we have circulating in our blood so if you aren’t getting enough from your diet, the body will start to release calcium from its largest source, our bones! ⠀ This is why it is important to include calcium rich foods into your diet to maintain your bone strength (density) and prevent the development of osteoporosis. ⠀ The main foods rich in calcium are dairy products like milk, cheese and yoghurt. However there are many non-dairy sources that provide calcium. ⠀ If you are avoiding dairy because of allergies, intolerance or ethical reasons (vegans) make sure your diet includes non dairy calcium food sources. ⠀ Some non dairy sources of calcium like as spinach and rhubarb contain oxalates, naturally occurring compounds that decrease calcium absorption. This is just something to be aware of. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Men and women 19 years + calcium requirements: 1,000 mg:day ⠀ Women over 50 years & men over 70 years requirements: 1,300 mg/day ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ If you aim to include 1-2 of the above foods at each meal and between meals I am positive you will reach the recommended amount! ? IS YOUR FAVOURITE MEAL DESSERT?! Well then you better listen up ? If you want to have your cake and eat it too – then it's important to note: eating well for overall health and fat loss is a two part system in that quality and quantity go hand in hand, the art of weight loss will always boil down to calories in vs calories out. If you want to lose weight you need to calorically be consuming less energy than expenditure. It is necessary to acknowledge the calorie value of your food choices as it will be the driver in whether you lose or gain weight. Take the above examples, a few small changes in dessert choices have changed the caloric density significantly between each meal, allowing you to fit in your sweet treat in more budget-friendly way for your calorie bank. Make smarter choices ✅ A #healthy approach to dieting is a flexible dieting method maintaining an 80/20 rule. The 80/20 rule practices a moderated approach where all foods can fit into a balanced diet. ?Around 80% of the time opt for whole foods that are rich in micronutrients, such as whole grains, leaner cuts of meat, legumes, vegies, fruits, grains etc and give yourself around 20% of the time where you choose foods that nourish your soul, that includes dessert. It's important for nearly every aspect of your being including your weight, metabolism, inflammation, brain function, and more. — ?? 19. Know your bread

View this post on Instagram

Tag a bread lover, hit save and get educated on the calorie values of these assorted breads. ? – – People eat bread. This largely occurs because people like bread. In most cases it is not particularly nutrient dense, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be consumed with/without something that is nutrient dense. – – For too long bread has been blamed for weight gain or the primary food that stagnates weight loss. Whilst bread is left on supermarket shelves by those convinced that it’s the reason they are fat, the real issue is of course that several multi-faceted issues/actions across one’s diet and lifestyle contribute to weight gain. To attribute one food/food group as the single cause of the complexity that is obesity is short sighted. – – Most of the calories in bread originate from carbs in refined form (and we know how irrational people can be about refined carbs). But when an individual claims that relatively high carb foods are satanic for one’s composition, they are misinformed and irrational. In fact, one recent study tested diets with free access to refined carbs compared with refined fats. It’s results indicated that more weight was gained over time with free access to refined fats, not carbs. This is just one study of course. – – As you’ll see, in terms of calories, white bread is similar wholemeal and rye breads. Therefore you will not necessarily manage weight better by consuming brown bread, despite it being less refined. The only key nutritional difference is fibre. And whilst fibre may increase one’s satiety, attention must also be paid to additional food variables included in the form of fillings or spreads to gather a greater insight into total energy consumed and subsequent food behaviour. ?? – – If you enjoy bread, include it in your diet. If you don’t enjoy bread, don’t include it. But whatever your decision, make it the knowledge that any food can be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet. ? P.s. What’s your favourite bread? – – #thefitnesschef #breadlover #carbs #fatloss #calories #caloriedeficit #caloriecounting #losebellyfat #losefat #nutritioncoach #fatlosstips #fatlosscoach #breadlife #fatlosscoach #fibre #nutritionfacts #bread

While correlation can't prove causation, there were some strengths to the study that make me think the link is worth respecting. There was no relationship between other forms of protein, such as chicken, pork, fish or plant-based proteins, and mental health. And, women who consumed more than 3-4 servings were also more likely to be depressed. Drop Those Doritos – Here Are 15 Healthy Snacks You Can Eat Instead!

You can eat a whole bunch of these in one sitting and not feel terrible about yourself.

The answers are surprisingly delightful (my go-to is nuts), so go ahead and indulge!

#15. It’s so easy.

Roasted Chickpeas/Garbonzo Beans.

It’s so easy. I never thought it would be, but I tried it last week and it’s literally just:

Preheat oven to 375F (190C)

Drain can (or 2) of chickpeas. Pour out onto a pan. Pat dry with towel, or don’t. It doesn’t matter too much.

Throw them in the oven for 30 minutes. (You’ll want to take them out every 10 minutes or so to move them around a bit.)

Remove from oven and pour into bowl. Toss with a spoon of vegetable oil, salt, thyme, and a good spoonful of chili powder.

Pop it back into the oven another 10-15 minutes. (I’m definitely going the full 15 minutes the next time I make these because holy hell they taste so good when they’re just perfectly crispy)

It’s like popcorn, but nuts, but they’re chickpeas, but they’re spiced up, but they’re magic.

Edit: it has been pointed out that while these ARE a healthier alternative, they are still calorie dense. I think they’re relatively filling though.

#14. Underrated vegetable.

Snap peas. We’ve been getting them fresh from a farm stand, then cooking them for just a couple minutes in a pot with a splash of water and some garlic salt. They’re like CRACK. We fight over them and can’t seem to get enough. Toddler included. 10/10 underrated vegetable.

#13. Also still an orange.

Cutie oranges. They’re like 90 calories a piece and also still orange.

#12. Little slushie bites.

Frozen grapes. They’re like little slushie bites.

Edit: Thank you for the gold, stranger!

Edit 2: And the silver, friend!

#11. Smarta**.

A bowl of rice is great if you want to eat 1000 of something.

#10. Salty and sweet.

Add tajin to fruits to get your salty fix.

#9. Watermelon is great.

Probably celery or cucumber. You might be able to get away with watermelon as well, I once went through 3 1/2 watermelons a week. Watermelon is great

edit:

I’m going to buy a watermelon now.

#8. Half-sour pickles are game changing

I used to go for a family size bag of salt n vinegar. Shred it without realizing until last bits….

Switched out for jars or pickles. Worked like a charm. It solved that crispy sour tangy craving and zapped calories. I’m down at least 40 lbs since I swapped to pickles a few years back

Edit: thank you everyone, I was not expecting my most upvoted content to be regarding my love for pickles. First, blood pressure topic: yes I have high blood pressure. Long time. I’ve been taking medication for many many years for it. My blood pressure is actually been better in the past few years since the switch, but I do you know and understand the consequences of salt. I hardly ever use salt with anything else really. My massive weight actually came as a result of medications over a decade ago. Had been constantly battling to lose the weight, and in recent years actually kind of gave up. And that’s when the weight started coming off. I drink a minimum of a gallon of water a day but usually twice that. Most of my diet it’s liquid because I’m extremely thirsty person(yes I know that a warning for diabetes, doc keeps looking but I’m safe). Oddly enough, the weight started to finally come off when I got on a regular regimen of medical marijuana. I think it rebooted my metabolism.

As for the pickle enthusiasts and pickle lovers… My grocery store favorite is zesty Dill. Every year my mother makes usually a solid 20 dozen jars of pickles and I claim about half of them. A lot of the ones I claim, I add pepper flakes and some garlic. I usually eat one jar in one sitting, and try to set my my max at two jars a week for staying sodium conscious. I try to only get potato chips, as re su of these choices, when it’s a special occasion with guests.

Thanks everyone. I know Rick would be proud.

Extra edit: Thank you kind stranger so much for my first silver, which is my first of any badge here. I truly appreciate it.

#7. Your poops will be great.

Grapes. Find the best grapes you can and go to town. Your poops will be great afterward.

#6. It gets me through.

Whenever I’m craving chocolate I find that a handful of peanuts and dried fruit gives me the short-term energy boost my body needs to get me to the store to buy chocolate.

#5. It’s also delicious.

Plain popcorn

A cup of air-popped popcorn only has 31 calories, and high in fiber. Studies have found that popcorn will fill you up more than other popular snacks such as potato chips. It is also high volume, having pretty much the same nutritional value as a popcorn kernel.

It’s also delicious.

Edit: Obviously you can throw some salt or spices on there, I was just pointing out how healthy popcorn is at its core.

#4. Seaweed packs.

I tend to eat roasted dry seaweed packs. Only like 25 calories a pack and not that much sodium if you get good ones.

EDIT: Since this blew up, many people have been asking about specific brands. The one I get is a Korean brand called gimMe organic. I personally like the sea salt. 25 calories a pack and only 65mg of sodium. Just be careful with consuming large amounts due to iodine.

#3. Surprisingly low calorie.

Pineapple is surprisingly low calorie for sweetness.

#2. PB2.

I love peanut butter but I can’t justify 190 calories for 2tbsp. Go get some PB2. It’s only 50 calories for 2tbsp. Smear that stuff on apples, celery, bananas, bread, and everything else you own because it is miraculous.

#1. Crunchy and refreshing.

I’d go for sliced red and orange peppers. Crunchy, refreshing, and hey a Tony bit of ranch to go with it can’t be too terrible. Tiny though, that shit is like 80 calories a tbsp.

I’m stocking up the next time I hit a price club!

Research Shows That Sleeping in a Cold Room Is Better for Your Health

Do you battle with your partner over the thermostat? If so, then listen up – whoever likes it colder at night now has some science to back up their position.

According to an article written by Dr. Christopher Winter, medical director at Charlottesville Neurology & Sleep Medicine, there are several reasons to keep your thermostat between 60-67 degrees F while you snooze. According to his research, if the temperature falls below or climbs above that range you’re more likely to toss, turn, and generally get worse sleep.

Image by Michal Jarmoluk from Pixabay

Why? It’s important to note that our bodies have a natural, 24-hour cycle in which our temperatures peak in the late afternoon and fall to their lowest point around 5 am. We’re typically able to fall asleep when our body temperature begins to drop, so keeping your room cold could encourage you to fall asleep faster.

A cold room encourages a more restful sleep, says research out of University of South Australia that connected poor body temperature regulation with certain forms of insomnia.

It could keep you looking younger, since sleeping in a room warmer than 70 degrees stops your body from releasing melatonin.

Image by Jess Foami from Pixabay

Naturopathic doctor Natasha Turner says that healthy sleep patterns and a predictable temperature drop release a growth hormone and decrease your stress hormone, the combination of which could actually help you lose weight.

One study even found that it could lower your risk for metabolic disease like diabetes. Participants burned more calories while they were awake and also doubled their amount of brown fat, or good fat, while allows the body to store fewer calories. Over time, that combination can lower your risk for metabolic disease.

Take a Look at These Real Life Stories of People Who Stumbled upon Dead Bodies

I’ve never seen a dead body, even at a funeral, so I think it would be pretty horrible and disturbing to just come across one in the middle of my day. Some of the Redditors on this AskReddit thread absolutely agree with me:

1. Absolutely Devastating

“I found my mom’s dead body on the floor of her bedroom in March of this year. I called 911 and then my father, who was out of town on business. Hardest phone call I’ve ever had to make. Apparently my mom had a kidney infection from kidney reflux disease as well as pneumonia. It caught her in the middle of the night and she passed away.”

2. RA’s Worst Nightmare

“I was an RA in college. I got a call that one of my students didn’t go home for Easter. We found him hanging in the closet in his dorm room. I was upset about it because he seemed okay and never showed any signs of depression. Having to talk to his parents afterward was beyond hard.”

3. All a Blur

“I was 14 and babysitting for my baby 2nd cousin. He died from SIDS and I found him when checking on him in the morning. I frantically tried baby CPR but knew it was useless. I had to go and tell his mother who had been out late and was sleeping in the next room. Then it was all just a blur of crying, ambulance, calling my auntie and uncle and then being questioned by police.”

4. Delayed Reaction

“I must have been in total shock, because I was completely calm (detached). Saw something weird in the bushes, found the body, called the cops, talked to the cops, went on about my day. Two days later had a panic attack when walking down same path.”

5. “I Miss You, Tom”

“There was a park worker named Tom who used to always smile at me and say hello when I was a little kid. Sometimes he would have candy or a small toy for me. Fast forward 20 years, and I’m an adult. Walking back from work one day I saw tom in the park, and stopped to talk to him. At this point he was close to 70 years old, but still working 50 hours a week.

During our conversation he was still working, and he needed to go into the maintenance shed for something. I followed along with him, continuing the conversation. When he opened the door, I saw a bed. He had been living in the maintenance shed, with no running water or electricity. I decided to let him move into my spare room, and things were going great. I spent 4th of July weekend at my girlfriends house, leaving Tom by himself in the apartment.

He refused to turn on the air conditioning because he didn’t want to “waste” my money. It was over 100 degrees that weekend, and we lived in a top floor apartment in a shitty wooden building, so it had to hit 120+ inside. The heat killed him. He died drinking his morning coffee. He fell out of his chair, halfway through the cup. When I found him he had been dead for a couple days.

He was discolored, and slightly bloated. The smell was horrible, it took me weeks to get it out of the apartment. I called 911 (in hindsight, it wasn’t much of an emergency, but I wasn’t thinking clearly) and they came and took the body. They didn’t clean up all the bodily fluids though, which I was not expecting. I had to do it. It was rough. I wish he hadn’t been so concerned with wasting my money. I wish he would have turned the AC on. I miss you Tom.”

6. Landlord

“I’m a landlord. I got a call from the father of one of our tenants. He hadn’t heard from his son for a few days and he didn’t live in town. I said I would go by and check on him. No one answered the door and I just felt something was wrong. I used a master key to enter and could see that he was laying on the couch. I thought he looked dead and went back out the door, but then I realized I had to be sure.

I went back in and stared at him for about 15 seconds to really be sure. I don’t recall how he died, but I know he was a very heavy drinker. The worst part was that, after I called the police, I had to call the father back. Not an easy phone call to make, but I felt he should know.”

7. Not Suspicious At All

“My dad and I found a body in the middle of the road in Ohio. It was on the 5th of July at 5:30 A.M. He was just in the road, one leg almost severed. We blocked the road and called the sheriff. I guess he was either drunk and fell asleep in the road or someone just hit him and bailed. They never did find out who did it. There was a couple that supposedly discovered him shortly before us, and for some odd reason they went 10 miles home and switched vehicles before the sheriff showed up. We told the sheriff about it but he didn’t see anything unusual about that.”

8. Murder/Suicide

“I came home and discovered the bodies of my husband and son from a murder suicide. I knew something was wrong when I opened the apartment door, because usually my son would be greeting me, crawling on the floor (he was 2) and it was totally quiet and I hadn’t had any responses from texts from my husband. They were lying side by side on our bed. My initial reaction was “Okay… you don’t know yet.” I started moving towards my son, just enough to see that his chest wasn’t moving. I started shaking, looked around briefly for a note with some sort of explanation, couldn’t find one and decided that I would be better off not touching anything.

I ran out of my apartment and into the hallway and called 911. I sat down on the floor and just wailed into the phone until emergency services showed up. I just sat there, staring ahead of me unable to respond. After I don’t know how long a paramedic came out and asked if I was okay. I asked “Are they gone?” and he nodded, and said, “Yeah…” There aren’t really words to describe the shock and grief. There was also the big question of, “Now what?” – what do I do with my life? My whole planned future was nulled in the space of about 10 minutes.”

9. Missing Girl

“My brothers and I were playing around in the woods at a park up the street from my house, and had been playing near a pile of leaves picking bits up, throwing them at each other, when my brother noticed a purse laying on the ground. He picked it up, and he looked through it, he found a wallet, there was money in it, credit cards…We took it home, and showed my mom, who thinking it strange that it had been abandoned called the police. The I.D. in the wallet belonged to a woman who had been missing for three days, the police searched the park, and found the woman’s body. She had been hidden in a pile of leaves, the one we had been playing around (luckily not jumping in). To make matters worse, the woman was murdered by her estranged boyfriend, whom she agreed to meet the morning she died only a few days before she was due to testify against him in court for domestic violence.”

10. Desensitized

“I was driving home at about 2 a.m. and I was going around a turn at about 50 MPH but I noticed something off and slowed down it was a car in a ditch. And there was something in the road I hadn’t slowed down quickly enough and narrowly swerved around the object. As I passed it realized it was a human body. I pulled into the nearby driveway. Ran over to them and tried to get them to wake up or show some sign of life. I think I had leaned on their chest and it sounded like they may have breathed a bit but I think it was just wishful thinking. Called the cops and told them I thought he was breathing so they would hurry. Took an ambulance about 10 minutes to get there and as soon as the guy stepped out the ambulance he said “oh yeah he’s dead.” I was struck by his callousness. It happened to be a guy a few years older than me that grew up in my neighborhood. I didn’t even realize it until I got home and then I finally cried myself to sleep.”

11. Med Student

“Was coming back home from school. Back then I was in my first year of med school and had not seen any dead bodies yet. I hear one of my neighbors scream and call for her husband. I walk over to see what was going on and turns out another neighbor fell down a set of stairs just outside her apartment and hit her head. She had a very faint pulse, her pupils were fixed and she wasn’t breathing anymore, I also suspect she had fluid in her lungs cause she had froth at the mouth. We called an ambulance but all they could do was confirm her death. I was truly shocked at the time because I had never ever seen a dead person before that day. She was a single lady, no kids and I felt really bad that there was no one around to help her while there was still hope.”

12. Surprisingly Normal

“I once found my neighbor dead in his yard. He looked quite normal as if alive, but he wasn’t. He had a fatal heart attack. His body still had color in it. Before that I always used to think that dead bodies look horrific, but they look surprisingly normal to me.”

13. Not Suitable For Children

“I was eleven years old and a friend of mine and I were playing near my friend’s house which was near a lake. We say a dog barking by a small jetty in the lake. He stood there barking for a long time and tried to get our attention so went walked over to see what it was. We saw the legs of an old woman sticking out from under the jetty. She had been there for a long time. We told my friend’s parents and they called the police. It was a little scary but I felt pretty detached from the whole situation. The thing I remember the most was when she was picked up and I wanted to see what was going on, the cops yelled at us to get lost.”

14. Career Change

“When I was 9 years old coming back from a dentist’s appointment. My mom and I stopped at a service station to get gas. There was a red truck in front of us facing our car at the other pump and the man inside was wearing sunglasses. He was sitting in a odd position with his head resting on his shoulder. I walked into the station to get a coke and when I came back I saw he hadn’t moved and noticed chewed up food in his mouth. I poked his shoulder to see if he was just sleeping but he didn’t move so I took his glasses off and saw his eyes wide open. He got hauled off in an ambulance and I asked one of the workers if he was alright but he was said he dead for at least thirty minutes. I cried the rest of the day. That mess is scary! I wanted to be a brain surgeon prior to that incident but that changed my mind. I can’t deal with the traumatic stuff.”

15. Terrifying Find

“My friend’s mum was going for an early morning jog on some boardwalk that ran through a creek (which is usually a pretty fucking scary place at the best of times). She was on a long straight stretch and saw a white figure at the end; on closer inspection, it was some guy who hung himself off a tree.”

Boom! Taco Bell Officially Counts as a “Healthy” Fast Food Choice

You really don’t have to feel as bad about going through the Taco Bell drive thru anymore. No, seriously.

Folks, they’re been making some legit changes, and those modifications are moving the fast food chain toward being the healthiest drive thru option around.

Now, not everything on their menu is good for your health (or your waistline), but HEAR ME OUT!

In the past few years, their entire menu has been overhauled to reduce sodium by 15%, with a 25% reduction coming soon.

Not only that, they’ve removed artificial flavors and colors, replacing them with natural alternatives.

Their breakfast menu is sourced from 100% cage-free eggs, and they’re looking to bring cage-free eggs for their entire menu in the near future.

And they only serve chicken that has been raised without antibiotics.

Take that, everyone else!

Of course, it’s up to you as the consumer to make smart choices and to control your portion size. If you order everything you want (including those nacho fries) you might be antibiotic and dye-free, but your heart probably won’t thank you.

Nacho Fries have been back at @TacoBell for a little while now, so we finally decided to enjoy them again before they’re gone. This is obligatory for every hot rerelease. ? And speaking of hot, we tried Diablo sauce for the first time, along with Diablo Tortilla Chips (found at 7-Eleven)—not a fan. We got a lime vibe from the sauce which we don’t like, and its extra heat ruined a couple sips of our Baja Blast. We enjoy spicy, but not when it compromises a carbonated beverage. The chips however, did the flavor of the sauce so much justice that they were more enjoyable than the sauce itself. But because of the lime, we’d never try it again. Doesn’t mean they’re bad; we just don’t dig it personally. All that matters is, we now know. • #Foodie #Foodgasm #Tacobell #Fries #SpicyFood #Cinnabon #MountainDew #BajaBlast #PepsiCo #Pepsi #Chips #Crisps #JunkFood #Tasty #FoodPorn #foodstagram #sweet #sugar #hungry #IIFYM #fit #diet #fitfam #foodie #foodporn #cheatmeal #eeeeeats #macros

Try ordering vegetarian or vegan options, or order their “fresco” option that removes cheese, rice, and sour cream but gives you back some pico de gallo for flavor.

Like Taco Bell’s nutritionist and dietician says “I can’t believe I work here.”

Just kidding. She told Business Insider,

“We just really encourage people to customize to however it fits their lifestyle.”

Dinosaur-Obsessed Kids Have Higher Intelligence

I’ve noticed a ton of kids who belong to my friends and family are totally obsessed with dinosaurs. They wear dinosaur shirts, read dinosaur books, and play with dinosaur toys day in and day out. And that’s great news, according to a study that says kids who are obsessed with dinosaurs are smarter than kids who aren’t.

In the psychology world, this phenomenon is called “intense interests.” Roughly one-third of kids develop an intense interest in their lives but for most the obsession usually fades after the age of six.

A study from the University of Indiana and the University of Wisconsin found that an intense interest can “enhance perseverance, improve attention and enhance skills of complex thinking as the processing of information”, especially when the interest demands a conceptual domain.

Intense interests have also been shown to improve linguistic skills and are a good indicator of higher understanding. It’s also been shown that the way children study dinosaurs helps them develop strategies to tackle problems throughout their lives.

Interestingly, kids’ intense interest in dinosaurs develops in the first year of life without encouragement from their parents. As mentioned earlier, most of these obsessions pass and only 20% of kids still have the intense interest when they enter school.

Researchers believe that once kids start school and have to devote time to learning new things, they lose their free time to explore their interests. It is suggested that in order to keep your child’s interest alive as they grow up, parents should teach their kids facts about the subject as opposed to letting them have “pretend adventures.”

Make sure those kids keep learning on their own after they start school, and remember, if your child is obsessed with T-Rex, that’s a good thing!

A Grocery Store Gives Customers Embarrassing Plastic Bags to Encourage Them to Bring Their Own

A trend has developed in recent years where we’re seeing cities, counties, and grocery stores completely banning the use of single-use plastic bags altogether. So while there is some progress, we still have a long way to go.

One grocery store in Vancouver, British Columbia, decided to try to convince their customers NOT to use plastic bags in a very unique, and hilarious, way.

East West Market is offering customers plastic bags with fake slogans and fake businesses that no one, and I mean no one, would want to be seen with. How’s that for a deterrent? Embarrassment always works, people.

How would you like to carry a bag around town that said, “Into the Weird Adult Video Emporium,” “Dr. Toews’ Wart Ointment Wholesale,” or “The Colon Care Co-op”? You’d probably never be able to look your neighbors in the eye again.

The bags have the tag line “Avoid the shame. Bring a reusable bag” printed on them as well. Customers also have to pay five cents per plastic bag at East West Market if they don’t bring their own bags.

The owner of East West Market, David Lee Kwen, said about the project, “We wanted to give them something humorous, but also something that made them think at the same time. It’s human nature not to want to be told what to do.”

One downside has been that because the bags went viral online, people are paying the five cents to collect them. Kwen said, “Some of the customers want to collect them because they love the idea of it. It’s a double-edged sword. We wanted to address an issue, but we’ve also made something popular. Our aim was to start a conversation that could go beyond people just remembering their reusable bags when they come to our market—and we’re glad that the conversation has kept growing, with anyone who’s seen or interacted with the bags.”

Hey, at least people are taking notice, right?

Just do us a favor and bring a reusable bag next time you go grocery shopping, okay?

We’ll all be better off.

People Are Flocking to the Site of the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster to Post Pics on Social Media

Due to the success of the hit HBO show Chernobyl, naturally now Instagram “influencers” are descending on the site of the 1986 nuclear disaster in Ukraine (and risking their health) to have their photos taken. Seems like kind of a disrespectful place to showcase your fabulous lifestyle, doesn’t it?

The show’s creator even tweeted this message out.

It kind of reminds me of this story about people taking “playful” photos at the site of the Auschwitz concentration camp.

?? A Twitter Thread Explained Why Raising the Price of Junk Food Might Hurt as Many Kids as It Helps

There’s no way around it: eating healthy is expensive. You could easily pop over to a fast food joint or buy a giant bag of say, pizza rolls, and fill your belly to the brim for the same price (or less) than you could make a salad at home or keep an assortment of fresh fruit on hand for a healthy snack.

That said, childhood obesity is also a real and growing health problem across the Western world.

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has created what he calls his #AdEnough campaign to try to fight it by changing the way junk food is advertised to children, which includes lobbying for a sugar tax that would increase the prices for fatty, sugary, junky food.

“This is a tax for good; this is a tax for love; this is designed to protect and give to the most disadvantaged communities,” he said in a statement.

That said, many people are calling him out for a couple of things.

First, Oliver has a Cookies and Cream drink that’s served in a chocolate cup and contains 46 teaspoons of sugar (6x the daily recommended allowance for a child).

Second, as pointed out in this brilliant thread by Twitter user Ketty Hopkins, the tax would not help “the most disadvantaged communities” at all, since those are the exact same people who need cheap food in order to survive.

Things got pretty bad for her and her family…

Like really, insanely, horribly bad…

Hopkins grew up in a low-income family, and explained, based on her own experience, why eating healthy sometimes (most of the time) wasn’t really an option.

But they weren’t lazy. Her father was emotionally devastated and completely overwhelmed.

This next part is just… wow.

Instead of making bad food cost more, Ketty has some pretty good insights – and suggestions – on how to help families and children currently struggling to make ends meet.

Being healthy takes effort, and her father simply didn’t have the energy.

She also reminds people that judging others for what they’re eating isn’t any more helpful than it is nice – it’s more often than not money, not laziness, that’s at issue.

After all, she points out, if her father had not bought cheap, unhealthy food, their family wouldn’t have been able to afford food at all.

Better to change the system that keeps people at a disadvantage than to try to keep all food out of their reach, price-wise, in the meantime.

It’s hard to disagree with her logic, though I’m sure some will!
