American Destinations That Make You Feel Like You’re in Europe

The pandemic is still in full swing in the United States. As a result, many countries, including those that are part of the European Union, have imposed travel bans or restrictions against US citizens.

Thankfully, if you’re dead-set on taking that vacation this year, there are at least 10 U.S destinations that will make you feel as if you’ve journeyed across the pond, without ever leaving American soil. And each of these U.S cities is rich with the history and culture of the settlers who founded them.

Let’s take a look!

1. Leavenworth, Washington

It’s no accident that Leavenworth, WA looks so charming and inviting.

In the 1960s, after thirty years of economic struggle, town leaders agreed to adopt a Bavarian theme and give the city a makeover in order to attract tourists.

They instituted a series of festivals, including the Autumn Leaf Festival, Maifest, and Christmas Lighting Festival.

Be sure to visit the Bavarian village for bratwurst & sauerkraut and enjoy a daily morning alp horn saerenade.

2. Frankenmuth, Michigan

Michigan’s “little Bavaria” is known for it’s world-famous chicken dinners but it’s that German pride that really makes Frankenmuth special.

Enjoy German-inspired architecture, craft-beer and wine, and don’t forget to visit Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland, the world’s largest Christmas store, open 361 days a year.

3. Helen, Georgia

Here you’ll find a touch of Bavaria tucked in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

This charming little alpine village makes the perfect backdrop for a relaxing getaway.

Tour local vineyards, enjoy scenic water falls and hiking trails, or even scout out the perfect location for your upcoming nuptials.

4. St. Augustine, Florida

As the oldest city in the nation, St. Augustine has much to offer.

Gaze upon stately castles, enjoy historic reenactments, and even take a ghost tour.

Originally a busy port town for merchants, it’s also a great place for those who enjoy shopping or romantic water-side dinners.

5. Santa Barbara, California

With its stunning natural landscape and classic Spanish heritage, The American Riviera is hard to beat.

Its distinct architectural style comes from the early Spanish settlers who built Old Mission Santa Barbara, now the County Courthouse.

Soak in the sun and the culture with a walk down Santa Barbara’s Museum Mile or take yourself on the Red Tile Walking Tour.

6. Holland, Michigan

This quaint but colorful city is picture-perfect for a relaxing vacation.

Tour Windmill Island Gardens or make your way downtown for authentic Dutch architecture and cuisine.

Be sure to visit in the spring, during the Tulip Time Festival for the true Dutch experience, as millions of tulips burst into bloom.

7. Solvang, California

Visiting Solvang is like stepping into a storybook.

Enjoy this “little slice of Denmark” by strolling through the village, Danish pastry in hand.

Or maybe hop a ride on a historic, wooden, horse-drawn streetcar!

Be sure to take your picture with Danish icons, including the Little Mermaid Fountain, five windmills, the giant red clog Round Tower.

8. Calistoga, California

You’ll find this European-influenced city Nestled in California’s Napa Valley.

Home to wineries, geysers, and plenty of natural beauty, Calistoga is the perfect spot for endless outdoor adventures.

Take it all in during your hot-air balloon tour.

9. Vail, Colorado

Modeled after the ski districts of European Switzerland, Vail is the perfect spot for the adventurous vacationer.

Take advantage of the country’s largest free transportation system and visit the cobble-stoned, Bavarian-inspired village of Lionshead.

In the summer, come prepared to hike, bike, and enjoy the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens; be sure to bring your snowboard or skis if you’re visiting in the winter.

10. New Orleans, Louisiana

A pillar of community and resilience, this French-influenced city is a must-see.

While Mardi Gras always draws a crowd, there are so many other reasons to visit this city, including its whimsical architecture.

Enjoy mouthwatering beignets and Creole cuisine as you take in the romantic and jazzy vibe of French Quarter.

Now you know! You can enjoy the experience of visiting Europe, without the overseas flight. Visit each city’s websites to learn about the safety measures in place keeping both locals and tourists healthy and happy.

Even if you don’t feel safe traveling right now, it doesn’t mean you can’t start planning for the future.

I don’t know about you, but Santa Barbara is calling my name. Which city would you like to visit first? Let us know in the comments!

Cool Images From the Days of Fast Food Past

I know that kids today love going to McDonald’s and Chick Fil A and everything, but hear me out – those places are nowhere near as awesome as the iterations we visited as kids.

The outdoor playground at McDonald’s, full of metal stairs that could cut open a skull and bars that effectively imprisoned kids, all of the toys we worked so hard to collect – it was a special time.

And these 16 images are going to bring it all rushing back.

16. He looks so friendly.

That’s how clowns suck you in.

15. The Beanie Baby craze!

Would this even have been a list without it?

14. These were some of the best.

Not better than the Smurfs, though.

13. The disposable bibs, yes.

The McDonald’s by me is actually bringing them back.

12. Who on EARTH thought these were a good idea?

Their first foray into “healthy” eating.

11. I am not sorry the smoking thing is over.

I bet this ashtray would go for big bucks on Ebay, though.

10. The kid jail!

I bet our parents loved seeing us in there.

9. Our parents wanted these more than we did.

And they were so mad when we inevitably broke them.

8. Oh, how I wanted these!

I can still feel the yearning all these years later.

7. Not as good as the outdoor ones, though.

You will not change my mind on this.

6. These were some of the creepiest.

Too like Roger Rabbit.

5. Because we had to have something to do when our parents were taking forever.

It wasn’t because it took too long to get our food, that’s for sure.

4. These were so meta.

And nobody even knew what that meant.

3. Their Halloween toys were always the best.

I could never get them all, though. Which was probably by design.

2. More toys of McDonald’s food…

…sold at McDonald’s.

1. Back when their ice cream machines weren’t always broken.

And those twists, man. Those were the stuff.

Ahhh, can you smell the nostalgia? I can!

Check Out Lizzo’s Special Recipe for the Hungover Vegans Out There

Lizzo is an icon. And while she hasn’t been active on the tour scene lately, she’s definitely been active writing and making us all jealous of her poolside ways.

But despite the fact that her insta handle is @LizzoBeEating, she doesn’t tend to dedicate a ton of her online space to food content.

When she does though, it’s pretty great.

Recently, she offered up her personal solution to a big conundrum: what do you eat if you’re committed to a vegan diet, but you had a little too much to drink last night?

“Being plant based and vegan has been pretty easy,” she says in a cooking TikTok, “except for when I’m hungover. I used to crave cheesy eggs. So, here is my substitute…”

@lizzo

Might do a what I eat in a day vid because I feel like us fat queens need to represent 🤤

♬ original sound – lizzo

It sounds pretty good even to us omnivores. Here’s how the recipe breaks down:

1. Carne Asada and Black Bean Corn Mixture

This is the base for the recipe, she talks more about it in a previous video you can watch here.

2. JUST Egg

Add this plant-based egg substitute to the mix.

3. Season to Taste

Lizzo added some garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.

4. Add Spinach

Gotta get those greens in there.

5. Slice of Vegan Pepperjack

For a little spice.

6. Fry Up Some Vegan Bacon

Lizzo recommends cooking it in maple syrup so it’s “crunchy and candied.”

7. Enjoy!

Now you’re ready to chow down on what she calls “a really ugly but delicious scramble!”

A few specialty items to pick up for sure, but if you’re already stocking up for a plant-based diet, this sure looks like a recipe to try!

What’s YOUR go-to hangover meal?

People Admit Their Go-To “Poverty Meals” They Enjoy No Matter How Much Money They Have

Whether you have $5 in your pocket or $5,000, there are some meals that stick with you and that you still enjoy from when times were lean and you had to do everything in your life on the cheap.

I think my go-to cheap meal is just a plain cheese quesadilla. Cheese and flour tortillas, that’s all you need.

And they still taste great and I still make them to this day!

Let’s dig into some cheap meals with folks on AskReddit and see what they had to say.

1. Lessons from Mom.

“Grew up poor, but my mom sure knew how to stretch a dollar.

She would make steak fingers out of the cheapest cuts she could find. Tenderize, fry them up make gravy out of the drippings and serve with mashed potatoes.

The whole meal probably cost less than 5 bucks in ’70s dollars, and I’m telling you nothing tasted better. I made it for my kids when they were growing up and they still ask me for it sometimes.

She would be 94 today. Love you miss you mom.”

2. Potato time!

“Put some red skin potatoes, fresh green beans, chicken stock, and seasonings in a pot (or slow cooker) and simmer it for an hour or more.

Use a slotted spoon to put some in a bowl, then add a bit of stock and plenty of butter.

It’s heaven.”

3. Pretty simple.

“We used to eat squash and eggs growing up.

Grew the squash and eggs are cheap enough, or trade with the neighbors. You just cut the squash into thin round and cook in a pan with a little oil until they’re just soft. Scramble the eggs with the squash, add a bunch of pepper, some salt.

Sometimes we ate it over noodles or rice.”

4. Yummy.

“Oven-baked potatoes with salt and margarine. Cheap ingredients found in almost every home and easy to make.

Also, the starch in potatoes makes you feel full for pretty long.”

5. Here’s the deal.

“Steamed white rice, crack a raw egg in it while it’s scorching hot, stir aggressively and dash with soy sauce. I

f I have some, put roasted seaweed in. Super cheap breakfast but oh man is it filling/delicious.”

6. The best!

“Grilled cheese is great pretending to be bougie food too.

My brother and I used to go to the store together and splurge on fancy-ish cheese (i.e. still the precut stuff in plastic in the dairy section, not the high end stuff in the deli section or the fancy cheese cooler) and see who could come up with the best combination of cheeses and bread from the bakery section.

I think we settled on sourdough, smoked gouda, havarti, and cream cheese.”

7. So good!

“I had a PB&J recently and felt like a fool!

Why did I stop eating these when I became an adult? Society lead me to believe this was the way.

It is not! Been having PB&J a couple nights a week since. I refuse to let societies unenlightened views dictate my dinner choices!

PB&J is a top tier dish for any occasion.”

8. Mix it up.

“Make some pasta and add in whatever you can find in the fridge or cabinets.

Cheese, lunch meat, Spam, spices, etc.

No two meals were ever the same.”

9. Sounds good.

“Peanut butter and sliced banana on toast.

Now that I’m better off financially, I’ll add real honey and ground cinnamon because I’m fancy now.”

10. Struggle nachos.

“I still regularly eat my struggle nachos, tortilla chips with slices of American cheese on top and microwaved.

Now that I can afford it I’ll throw taco meat on top every now and again but still very much enjoy just the chips and cheese.”

11. Keep it simple.

“Quesadillas (with hot sauce if there is any)

I think a lot of people have different ideas of what a quesadilla is. My version is strictly a single tortilla with whatever cheese I have lying around (usually dollar packs of singles).

That means no meat, beans, lettuce, tomato, etc. And I definitely don’t use a Foreman to make mine”

12. Every day.

“Toast with a fried egg for breakfast.

Been eating that for probably 6 years now and still look forward to it every morning.”

13. There you go.

“Mexi-Mac:

Cook a pound of ground beef with a packet of taco seasoning. Make a box of Kraft Mac n’ Cheese. Mix together.

Also, that’s your salt quota for the week.”

Do you have some go-to cheap meals that you enjoy no matter where you’re at financially?

We’d love to hear from you!

Cheetos Is Making Mac and Cheese and It Looks Pretty Darn Good

Just when you think you’ve heard it all, something comes along and blows your mind a little bit.

Case in point: Cheetos has decided to expand its enterprise to macaroni and cheese. That’s right, everyone’s favorite childhood staple is about to get a lot more interesting.

Boxes of the new offering have been spotted in the wild at Walmart, with people sharing that there are three flavors available: Bold & Cheesy, Flamin’ Hot, and Cheddar Jalapeño.

To say people are excited is definitely an understatement. Snackgator writes on Instagram:

You aren’t dreaming, this is a real thing, and it’s glorious! These are on the Walmart website, so we know they’ll be in store there pretty soon. They come in three flavors: Bold & Cheesy, Cheesy Jalapeño, and Flamin’ Hot.

Even better, they suggest several #CheetosMacHack ideas to crumble different Cheetos products over these super cheesy meals.

Many people have also said that each box costs less than $1, which makes it even easier to get all three (or several boxes of all three).

The website Delish was able to get in touch with Walmart, who confirmed that yes: Cheetos mac & cheese is totally real. On top of that, they found out what it’s made up of:

It’s made with authentic Cheetos cheesiness and corkscrew pasta noodles and will be available in those three flavors in cup or box format.

Sounds like heaven to me!

Are you planning to try Cheetos macaroni and cheese? Which flavor do you want to try first?

Make sure you let us know all about in the comments!

A “Karen” Tried to Scam a Free Meal Until She Realized Who the Owner Was

In case you haven’t heard, a “Karen” is an entitled, usually middle-aged woman who complains to authority figures about others’ behavior.

This particular Karen decided that her complaint to the manager would get her a free meal. She couldn’t have been more off-base in her assumption, specifically as it concerned the owner.

A friend of his begins the story:

With help from his dad, the man was able to open the restaurant in the perfect location, and it was a smashing success right out of the gate. Everything was going well, until Karen showed up with her husband.

Right away, the owner, who was also the server, knew she was going to be a problem—the complaints began as soon as she sat down. Initially, he played along .

He knew he couldn’t keep his composure for long—so did she and, sensing a potential free meal, increased her demands.

She asked for the manager, as Karens often do. He brought someone over to take on the role.

She could have won an Academy Award for the story she told.

The “owner” and the server couldn’t keep up the ruse for long. They broke character.

The real owner came clean, and Karen was finally speechless.

Redditors who work in restaurants loved how this story ended, and the person who told it also had a bit of an update.

They deal with customers who try to scam free meals all the time and say restaurant owners are usually oblivious to this behavior because they’re not on the floor.

Workers shared that this also occurs in fast food places. Even though they’re a lot cheaper, free is free to some people.

Add Some Spice to Your Life With Totino’s Takis Fuego Mini Snack Bites

Break out the fire extinguisher—Totino’s is creating another late-afternoon snack legend in a collab with Takis to make Takis Fuego Mini Snack Bites.

Similar to the binge-worthy pizza rolls that you remember, these also bite-sized and are an ideal snack any time of day. However, these have added extra kick—they are coated in Takis Fuego seasoning with creamy mozzarella cheese on the inside, which oozes out once they’re cooked.

People Who Just Don’t Know What Is and Isn’t Cake Anymore

There’s no reasonable way to enter into this topic, so I’ll just say it: Twitter is being overrun by cakes in disguise and nobody is OK.

Why did this happen? How? That’s for future historians to unravel.

All we can do right now is sit back and marvel at all the cakery fakery overtaking our bakeries. The skill is takes to create such horrifyingly detailed edible facsimiles is far beyond my mortal comprehension, but it sure is fun to watch, and there are no shortage of jokes.

Beware ye who scroll past here, you’re about to question everything.

10. Taking the cake

Witness the absolute peak of man’s hubris.

9. Serrated blade runner

“I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Shoes made of sweets. I watched toilet paper split to reveal its sumptuous core. All those moments will be lost in time, like cake in rain.”

8. Sweet release

Soon we will all be cake.

7. Dog-gone

If I cannot have the chocolate, I must become the chocolate.

6. Cover versions

It’s all cake all the time.

5. Absolutely vicious

This is the series that just keeps on giving.

4. Beware the ides of starch

These are the signs that precede the fall of an empire.

3. Out of touch

A rallying cry for our moment in history.

2. Self-defense

Will the witness for the prosecution please cake the stand.

1. Soft reboots

This is the kind of retconning that I can get behind.

It’s been a confusing year, but at least this is the kind of confusion that’s delightful and funny and not just straight up horrifying. We need more of that.

What do YOU suspect may actually be cake?
