Ryan Reynolds Made a Gin Commercial Starring the Woman From the Peloton Commercial

You’ve probably seen the holiday Peloton ad – the one that definitely didn’t go the way the company wanted. It features a wife and mother who receives an exercise bike, then goes on to document her fitness journey online.

The problem is that it sort of plays like a horror movie in which the woman is forced to act like a happy wife and mother who loves working out, but is in fact being held against her will.

Monica Ruiz, the actress, blames her eyebrows, but it turns out the odd commercial might be great for her career – because Ryan Reynolds already hired her to make a commercial for Aviation American Gin.

In it, the Peloton-gifted wife is drinking gin at a bar with her friends after (maybe?) separating from her kidnapper/spouse. Or at least recovering from her traumatic year with the Peloton.

“You are safe here,” one friend says as the women share a toast “to new beginnings.”

Ruiz drains her glass and asks for another, and all’s well that ends well, I suppose.

Most people think it’s hilarious…except Sean Hunter, who played the husband in the original ad. He isn’t as amused by the situation as everyone else.

“Five seconds of air time has created an array of malicious feedback that is all associated with my face. As it continues to be screenshot online, I wonder what repercussions will come back to me. I pride myself on being a great teacher and developing actor and I can only hope this affects neither.”

Time will tell, but I mean, maybe he’ll get a second, better commercial opportunity as well?

You never know, but as for Reynolds and Ruiz, the internet is loving the addition to the “Peloton Cinematic Universe.”

And you know, I do feel a little bad for both actors, who likely never expected that booking an innocuous Christmas ad for an exercise bike would blow up online, for better or worse. But this is who we are as a society now.

Watch your face, folks. There are repercussions for days.

The “Peloton Wife” Said That Her Face Might Have Been the Real Problem in Those Commercials

You’ve probably seen that Peloton ad and read all of the jokes by now. Just in case, here’s a recap: a husband gifts his wife a Peloton exercise bike for Christmas, and she then makes home videos of her exercise journey.

As opposed to seeing a nice moment between spouses, the internet sees something more akin to a hostage video or a horror film.

Now, Monica Ruiz, the actress who plays “the wife,” is taking the blame for the whole ruckus.

“Honestly, I think it was just my face,” Ruiz told the Today show’s Hoda Kotb. “It was my fault. My eyebrows looked worried, I guess. People were like, ‘She looked scared.’”

She also says she can see how people think she looked worried in the ad, because her eyebrows “move.” That said, she hates that her performance might have ruined a company (Peloton lost over a billion dollars in market capitalization after the commercial came out, which is insane), and that’s why she decided to speak out for herself.

“I was like, Ok, I’ll just let everyone know I’m fine,” she said. “I’m OK, I’m not in a rehab for mental health anywhere.”

She’s just an actress who hopes to book more work soon, god love her.

“I hope people can remember that I’m not actually the ‘Peloton lady’ and let me work other jobs,” she said (Ryan Reynolds was clearly listening).

Peloton stood by the ad saying it was “disappointed in how some have misinterpreted” it.

Desperate Ways That Celebrities Have Tried to Stay Relevant

We live in the age of social media “influencers,” and it’s pretty easy for celebrities to figure out a way to make some extra cash off of their fame. If their initial careers peter out, there are plenty of solid back-up options.

And also, plenty of not so solid back-up options. Over the years, celebrities have resorted to all kinds of wacky antics to hold onto their dying fame.

On AskReddit, users shared the most desperate bid for fame that they’ve ever witnessed from fading celebrities. These stories are pretty bleak!

1. Remix albums.

“Vanilla ice putting out an album 5 years ago with 5 different versions of Ice Ice Baby.”

“He played at my college to promote that album.”

2. Infomercials.

“Infomercials. My favorite is Montell Williams selling blenders with special guest star Silvia Browne.”

“Shaq’s icy hot commercials are pretty funny.”

“Kevin Bacon’s commercials in the UK for EE. Impossible not to cringe every time they come on TV.”

3. Phone sex operator.

“When Octomom became a phone sex operator and did porn.”

“Lest we forget the time she ‘guest starred”‘on MTV’s Silent Library. She laid back on a gyno table with her feet in the stirrups and ‘shot’ plastic baby dolls at the contestants from her vag.”

4. Stage-bombing.

“Lil Mama getting on the stage when Jay-z & Alicia Keys were performing. Oh God!”

5. Under-attended concerts.

“Aaron Carter just performed a concert in my town for a crowd of a whopping fifty people.”

6. Farfetched lawsuits.

“Lindsey Lohan apparently suing Rockstar because of stuff in GTA 5. Claiming that they are using her as an image or something stupid.”

“Will.i.am suing Pharrell for saying “I am” in a song.”

7. Fake relationships.

“Farrah Abraham faking a relationship with James Deen.

8. Reality shows.

“When any “celebrity” does a “celebrity” reality show (ie Celebrity Diving Challenge, Dancing with the Stars, Celebrity Fit Club, Celebrity Rehab). It’s just so embarrassing.”

“David Hasselhoff’s reality show. Basically every reality show.”

9. Random sitcoms.

“Kristie Alley always seems to show up in a terrible new sitcom/commercial every other year. Just stop it already!”

“This most recent one seems exceedingly desperate. Especially with Michael Richards playing a seemingly Kramer type character and Rhea Perlman who hasn’t been seen since her divorce.”

10. Selling their stories.

“Mine would be seeing Lindsey lohan sell out her “recovery story” to Oprah.”

11. Talk shows.

“I think the Sarah Palin show. I live in Alaska and that shit was just embarrassing for this state.”

12. All things Kardashian.

“Anything anyone with the name Kardashian does.”

“If you really think about it, they were just a little bit famous because the Robert Kardashian (the dad) was OJ Simpson’s lawyer. Kim kept that fame by sleeping with Ray J, who was also clinging to fame behind his older sister Brandy. So really, the first thing Kim did in her career was something desperate to stay relevant.”

13. Plotting with paparazzi.

“I’ve read that Jennifer Love Hewitt will personally call some of the paparazzi, but act like it’s an anonymous call, to let them know where she will be so they can show up and photographer her.”

14. American Idol.

“Becoming a “judge” on American Idol.

Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Paula Abdul. People we haven’t heard anything out of in years join the show and release more shitty music.”

15. Sex tapes.

“Dustin Diamond aka Screech doing a sex tape and having a rap career, probably.”

“The Chyna sex tape is right up there.”

People Shared What They Believe Are the Most Underrated Romantic Films of the Last 10 Years

What are your favorite romantic films from the past ten years? Ones that you think are pretty underrated and that might’ve flown under the radar?

Well, here’s a big list of them that you might want to add to your various streaming queues, courtesy of responses the Buzzfeed Community.

Let us begin!

1. Love, Simon (2018)

“First of all, it was one of the first films I had ever seen that featured a gay main character within a love story. I honestly cried multiple times. I felt like it was so modern and realistic. It really hit close to me.”

2. Call Me By Your Name (2017)

“It has to be one of the best love stories I’ve ever seen portrayed on film! Not only is the journey between the two of them so beautiful, raw, and heartfelt, but the soundtrack and scenery just makes you swoon even harder.”

3. Juliet, Naked (2018)

“Honestly, I think I might be the only person to have seen this movie. Ethan Hawke is perfect and it’s a lovely reminder of how much I loved him in the ’90s. Please go watch it so I have someone to talk about it with!”

4. Friends with Benefits (2011)

“Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake are hilarious and have amazing chemistry!”

5. Brooklyn (2015)

“First, I loved how they chose a real Irish actress to play the main character. Second, this film takes place so long ago, yet there are so many relatable topics to the present; This includes immigration and falling in love with someone who is the complete opposite of who you’re used to dating. Lastly, I really liked how it wasn’t just about dating, it also explored family and death.”

6. Sparrows Dance (2012)

“Noah Buschel made a great movie about an agoraphobic actress (Marin Ireland) who hasn’t left her apartment or changed her routine in years after a huge nervous breakdown. She begins to fall in love with the plumber she has to call when her toilet overflows. The plumber (Paul Sparks) is understanding and slowly brings her walls down. It’s honestly so good, and my description doesn’t do it justice.”

7. Beginners (2010)

“It’s about a guy named Oliver who’s basically reflecting on his father’s life after he passes away. His father came out at the age of 75 and began a relationship with a younger man, which pushed him to be more honest and open with himself and those around him. While Oliver begins exploring his father’s life, he meets and begins to fall in love with a woman who has her own father issues. It’s honestly such a beautiful movie that deserves more recognition.”

8. Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)

“It’s such a beautiful love story, but I think people dismiss it because they’re vampires.”

9. Man Up (2015)

“Starring Lake Bell and Simon Pegg, it’s a British film about two people who are perfect and hilarious together! It’s kind of an unconventional premise, but it ends up working so well. I’m shocked more people don’t know about it.”

10. Like Crazy (2012)

“It’s such a raw, realistic portrayal of what relationships are like in your early twenties. The jealousy, back and forth breaking up, and the reality of how hard it is to end a relationship even when you know it’s not working. I think a lot of people can watch this movie and will be reminded of their first adult relationship, and what it’s like to grow apart.”

11. Five Feet Apart (2019)

“It did not the get the credit it deserved! It was pushed aside as just another movie romanticizing illnesses, but it definitely did not romanticize cystic fibrosis at all! I started crying halfway through and didn’t stop. 10/10.”

12. The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)

“It highlights a teenager, who is just starting to show signs of schizophrenia and depression, but is also learning about friendship and first loves. It hits me right in the feels every time I watch it. Also, Emma Watson’s hair basically defined the decade.”

13. Set It Up (2018)

“Honestly, my favorite rom-com ever! The movie has an amazing cast, with a funny and original storyline. The chemistry between the characters, the perfect slow burn that isn’t annoying, hilarious best friends, and a stereotypical dramatic airport scene. The movie has EVERYTHING in it you could ever want from a rom-com. The fact that more people don’t appreciate it is a straight up crime.”

14. The Giant Mechanical Man (2012)

“The Giant Mechanical Man with Jenna Fischer and Chris Messina is just a sweet movie about two regular people who are a little lost, and looking to be seen.”

15. The Switch (2010)

“The premise sounds like it would be one big Judd Apatow movie with crude humor, which I have no problem with, but it’s actually incredibly sweet. The relationship between Wally and Sebastian is heartwarming. I highly recommend, because it’s one of my favorite movies.”

6 Fast Facts About Actor James Stewart

Even though most people nowadays probably know actor James “Jimmy” Stewart because of his leading role as George Bailey in the much-beloved Christmas classic It’s A Wonderful Life, the truth is that he was incredibly prolific in his day.

He played cowboys opposite Henry Ford, he was one of Hitchcock’s top choices – starring in movies like Rear Window and The Man Who Knew Too Much – and he even did a comedy or two (one of my all-time favorite movies, The Philadelphia Story, is a must see).

Stewart was also a veteran and someone who eschewed the harsh light of Hollywood whenever possible.

So, let’s take a look at these 6 other tidbits that might be new information for you!

6. He hated the colorization of It’s a Wonderful Life as much as everyone else.

Stewart wrote a letter to Congress in 1987 protesting that colorizing originally black and white films violated the creative vision of directors like Frank Capra, who never would have employed “the kind of obvious visual pun” of dressing Violet Bick in violet costumes.

He described the tinted versions as “a bath of Easter egg dye” and also lobbied against the practice in person.

5. He had a degree in architecture.

I have been working almost every single day since God knows when (except Thanksgiving where I was released thankfully because my dumb brain in transition thought it would be healing to stand in the freezing touristy crowds of Herald Square for the Macy’s Day Parade). But decorating the apartment for the first time solo in a decade and needing to buy a new tree, got me to say the hell with work. I am going to watch my favourite flick and write Christmas cards and drink hot chocolate and cuddle with Jack. And then probably write a twenty page sleep story just because my brain has no choice but to constantly create. But it’s off the task list and can happen organically. #itsawonderfullife #jimmystewart #newtraditions #holidays #winter

A post shared by Michelle Hotaling (@missdiatribe) on

Stewart grew up in Indiana, Pennsylvania. His father owned a hardware store, and Stewart displayed artistic talent all through school – his interest in music helped him get accepted into Princeton, his father’s alma mater.

Stewart received a degree in architecture in 1932, but with the Great Depression in full swing, Stewart followed his interests into acting, joining a Massachusetts theater group (where he roomed with Henry Fonda).

He did a few short runs on Broadway before landing his first feature film, The Murder Man, which was released in 1935.

4. He published a book of poetry.

He authored Jimmy Stewart and His Poems in 1989, a small volume that contains not only poems, but anecdotes about how each was composed.

3. He was passionate about serving in WWII.

Stewart received a draft notice in 1940, and upon learning that he was five pounds under the minimum weight for enlistment, ate everything in sight until he qualified. He joined the Army Air Corps (later the Air Force), where he was a great asset, as he already had a pilot’s license.

The Air Corps tried to sideline him, keeping him stateside because of his high profile, but Stewart insisted on being sent into the action. In November, 1943, he was sent to England and flew over 20 combat missions over Germany.

He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and two Oak Leaf clusters, making him the most decorated actor to participate in the war.

2. There’s a statue of him in Indiana, Pennsylvania.

His hometown unveiled the piece of art in 1983, for Jimmy’s 75th birthday.

1. He wasn’t sure what to do with his Oscar.

He won the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in The Philadelphia Story (I told you!) in 1940. Afterwards, his father asked “I hear you won some kind of award. What was it, a plaque or something?” Stewart took his suggestion and displayed it at his father’s hardware store in PA.

It stayed in the same spot for 25 years.

If you have time, working your way through his catalogue is a great way to spend it (don’t miss Mr. Smith Goes to Washington or The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance!).

Tom Hanks Reads Sweet Tweets, and We Think You Will Enjoy Them

Tom Hanks (aka, The Nicest Man in Hollywood) teamed up with Twitter Movies to produce the sweetest Tweet-based film of probably all time.

For the short, Hanks looks through Twitter finding the nicest tweets and then reads them for us in his oh-so-soothing voice.

The video was released right before Thanksgiving, and it is filled with Hanks telling Chicken Soup for the Soul-style stories, but from Twitter – stories about overcoming adversity, about people doing good deeds, and, of course, about adorable animals.

The first tweet Hanks read was from a former McDonald’s employee. The employee had worked at one fast food joint for two and a half years, and whenever he prepared a ten-piece nugget meal, he’d throw in an extra one, just because.

How many times did tears come to your eyes because you found 11 nuggets instead of the ten you paid for in your order? Every single time, I tell you. How often did a nugget surprise happen? Not often.

But that’s what makes it special.

So, thank you former McD’s employee. There needs to be more people like you in the world.

Hanks thinks so too. “That is a man who’s not only being nice, but he’s feeding the world a little bit better. And [he’s] bucking the corporate strategy. Bravo! That’s a nice thing to do!”

Lucky for us, there are many more stories like that one on here. Watch the video early and often throughout the holiday season:

It will lift your spirits and make you happy. Guaranteed.
