Outdoor Brand Patagonia Will No Longer Sell to Clients Who Wreck the Environment

The Midtown Uniform Instagram page has been amusing its followers for some time now. The page skewers NYC finance bros on the basis of their almost identical style choices – namely, a button-down shirt, slacks, and a Patagonia fleece vest.

The page’s name actually comes from the fact that SO MANY of these professionals wear that exact look that it may as well be considered an official uniform.

That may not be the state of things for long, however. You see, Patagonia recently announced that they’ll be ditching clients in the corporate world in favor of clients whose interests more closely align with the company’s new mission to “save our home planet.”

This policy became public after Binna Kim, president of a communications agency named Vested (ironic, right?) tried to place an order of Patagonia vests for a client and received this rejection letter:

Basically, Patagonia is no longer accepting potentially lucrative deals from clients whose businesses support or condone practices that are destroying the environment.

It’s a move that may very well cost the brand quite a lot of money in short-term sales, but in the long run it’s a smart move for the outdoor-friendly company: they are making sure their brand is still associated with the great outdoors.

Talk about putting your money where your mouth is!

Artist Makes Floral Crowns for Dogs and Cats, and We Need One ASAP

San Diego artist and college professor Yarely first wove a flower crown and popped it on her Australian shepherd as a simple prop for an Instagram pic. Little did she know, that simple crown would go on to become a successful brand.

Freya’s Floral Company creates beautiful flower crowns for dogs, cats (and also humans).

But how do you get a dog to wear a crown made of flowers? Yarely says it may be easier at first to fix the crown on your pup’s head with the attached ribbons tied under the chin like a bonnet. Or, even tied loosely around the neck like a fancy collar. For photos, she has trained Freya to lie down first and then she balances the crown on top. Also, treats!

Tuesday cuteness! ??? . . . . . The shop is on vacation! During this time I will be working on a lot of different projects. I have lofty goals so idk of I’ll even get to it all. : : Here is my to do list : ✨ Make matching sets. (Two matching large crowns / two medium crowns etc.) ✨ Work on wreath crowns. (Full circle crowns. These would be more costly since they require double the material.) ✨ Make three fixed designs and make multiples of those designs . ✨ Make more crowns!! ✨ Work on floral hair combs (& matching sets with combs and crowns) ✨ Work on collaboration crowns . ✨ Develop a custom order system. ✨ Organize and update my workspace. : : : So far, I have started updating my workspace. On my stories I will be posting polls and will be asking for your feedback! Your thoughts matter. Any thoughts on this to do list? What are you looking forward to the most? Where should I even start?! ?#tooambitious

A post shared by Freya’s Floral Company (@freyasfloralco) on

She draws inspiration from how the flowers look on Freya. “It’s all about experimenting.” For custom orders, she spends as much time with each buyer as it takes to get the right colors and balance of fullness.

She also studies real floral arrangements to find her next ideas. The different types of flowers and colors spark her creativity.

Even Instagram celebrity and influencer Leonidas of leo.mainecoon (he’s a cat) likes to model Yarely’s crowns for his 155,000-plus followers. His fans are crazy about this look.

Handsome Leo knows he is special and beautiful in his majestic coronet. Some people are born royal, but in Yarely’s crowns, these pretty pets show us they are the true kings of Instagram.

20 Times People Asked Wendy’s to Roast Them and Instantly Regretted It

Wendy’s has long been known for selling fresh, never-frozen burgers, but that’s not the only thing they’re serving up hot anymore.

You see, whoever’s running their social media account is apparently a grillmaster certified in the art of roasting people online! They’re so good at it that people and companies on Twitter actually request to be burned.

Just know, if you mess with the bull, you get the horns.

Viral Post Perfectly Captures the Frustrating Truth About Women’s Clothing

Guys don’t like buying clothing, but considering how much easier it is for us to buy clothes, you’d think we’d be more enthusiastic about it. Seriously fellas, if you think buying men’s clothing is a chore, buying women’s clothing is a whole different ballgame.

You see, women’s clothing sizes can vary wildly from brand to another. There’s no “large, medium, small,” just a bunch of numbers that mean nothing. Seriously, what might be a 12 in one brand could be a 6 in another brand and a 16 in another. It’s like the wild west out there.

A Twitter user named Chloe recently posted a picture that very neatly expressed her annoyance with this unfortunate phenomenon.

As you can see, that’s a whole bunch of jeans that look a lot different from each other but are all size 12.

Chloe continued…

In another response, Chloe said, “No wonder women feel so insecure. I’ve had size 10 dresses, fit fine, then I’ll try on size 14 jeans that won’t even go past my hips, it’s not right”

Other Twitter users agreed with Chloe and offered their own thoughts.

Seems like a super annoying problem to have to deal with constantly.

Ladies, what do you think? Do you have a lot of issues like this with clothing?

Let us know in the comments!

10+ Words Most Americans Aren’t Pronouncing Properly

We know we’re not perfect, but if you want to pronounce foreign words and brands correctly, scroll through this list – I know I’ve been saying most of these 12 wrong for a while!

#1. Bayer

It’s a German label from a German company, and in Germany they would say it BUY-er. That said, BAY-er is probably going to serve you best here in the USA, since no one would have a clue what you were talking about otherwise.

#2. Adidas

No, the name of this German shoe brand doesn’t stand for “All Day I Dream About Sex,” and it’s also not pronounced uh-DEE-duhs, either. It’s AH-dee-DAHS, named for founder Aldoph “Adi” Dassler.

#3. Bokeh

It’s been put into common English use because of the photo apps that use it as an effect, but the recent iPhone ad promoting their Depth Control feature is pronouncing the word wrong.

It’s not BOH-KUH but boh-KAY. Yeah, like the bunch of flowers.

#4. Moschino

The letter C is confusing in Italian (in Latin, there are only hard C’s, fun fact), so while most people say mo-SHEE-no or moss-CHEE-no, the correct way it to substitute a hard K sound for the ch – mo-SKI-no.

#5. Ellevest

The female-centric investment firm isn’t pronounced EL-VEST but EL-uh-vest, according to founder Sallie Krawcheck.

#6. Ralph Lauren

For anyone who didn’t watch Friends, this French brand is pronounced Ralph LO-ren, not Ralph Lo-REN.

#7. IKEA

You love their cheap-but-stylish furniture and Swedish meatballs, but I have some news for you – according to Swede and LA Galaxy player Zlatan Ibrahimovic, it’s not pronounced eye-KEY-uh, but ee-KAY-uh.

Huh.

#8. Zagat

The guide to all things restaurants is named after Tim and Nina Zagat, who pronounce their last name as zu-GHAT, not ZA-gut.

#9. Nutella

The actual pronunciation – NUT-el-uh – makes sense, because the yummy spread is made of hazelNUTS not hazelNEWTS.

That said, for some reason Americans insist on referring to it as NEW-tell-uh.

#10. Porsche

Save a German’s ears and say this one Poor-shay (and roll the R in the back of your throat) and not Porsh (with your drawl included).

#11. Hyundai

You’re probably pronouncing the car company as HUN-DYE, but in reality, the world (which comes from the Korean word for modernity) is pronounced HUN-DAY (rhymes with Sunday).

#12. Balmain

French is hard, y’all, so if you want to sound smart go with Bahl-mah in stead of BALL-MAIN.

The more you know!

Corn Flakes Were Made to Get You to Stop Masturbating (+7 More Weird Facts About Cereal)

We all know that Frosted Flakes are “Grrrrrreat” and that Lucky Charms are “Magically delicious,” but I’m willing to bet that a lot of you have no idea what the real story behind some of your favorite cereals.

#1. Alpha-Bits were a concentrated effort to market cereal to children.

Post Cereals worker Thomas Quigley, a father of seven, rose to a challenge to design a new cereal to market to kids – that combining fun, education, and sugar would be just the ticket.

He was right, of course, and the tradition of selling sugar to kids and calling it a healthy breakfast was born!

#2. Wheaties were the result of an accident.

In 1921, a clinician at a sanitarium accidentally spilled wheat gruel onto a hot stovetop. It dried into flakes and, inspired by the preparation of Corn Flakes, a miller and his employees tried 14 times and 36 varieties of wheat to find the perfect combination of wheat, salt, sugar, and malt syrup.

They became popular due to the first radio commercial jingle.

#3. Cap’n Crunch is designed to make you want more.

By the 1960s, some of the best-selling cereals marketed to kids had lots of sugar, and research showed that kids preferred cereal that floated and stayed crunchy (duh), so Quaker came up with a combination of corn and oat cereal that fit the bill.

Flavorist Pamela Low brought the key ingredient to the table, though, with a favorite combination from her childhood: brown sugar and butter sauce over rice. She called it a “want-more-ishness” and people couldn’t get enough – especially kids after the introduction of their seafaring mascot.

#4. The history of Chex is…not very nice.

Chex came from a pet food company called Ralston Purina that was led by one William Danforth and self-help author Webster Edgerly (who was looking to promote whole grains as people food). Edgerly was the founder of a cult-like movement that, in addition to promoting a healthy diet, was into mind control and racial supremacy (he advocated for non-whites to be castrated and believed watermelons were toxic to Caucasians?), but the diet piece made Edgerly interested in creating yummy sources of whole grains to his followers.

Together, the two first came up with Shredded Ralston, which was bite-sized squares of shredded wheat, changing it to “Chex” in 1950 to honor the brand’s checkerboard logo. Danforth continued to make pet food under the name Purina while Chex was sold off to General Mills.

#5. Your Corn Flakes were meant to curb sexual desire.

Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, who worked as a physician in a Michigan sanitarium, believed (along with the rest of the Seventh-Day-Adentists) that irritating foods (like too much meat at breakfast) led to an increase in sexual desire, and that masturbation could lead to worsening illness.

He experimented until he came up with bland, grain-based breakfast flakes after he left boiled wheat out for too long and then decided what the heck, I’ll toast them and feed them to my patients anyway. Luckily, it worked out for all involved!

#6. Cheerios are the perfect result of over 500 test products.

Puffed cereals made from rice and wheat were all the rage in the 1930s and 1940s, and General Mills wanted to see if it worked with oats. Food science innovator Lester Borchardt and his team tested the oat-based recipe (and a variety of shapes) – over 500 formulas in all – before the winning donut shape won out.

It was originally called CheeriOats but the name was shortened after Quaker Oats filed a lawsuit over the use of the word ‘oats.” It was rebranded in 1945 and has been a top-selling cereal ever since.

#7. Honey Bunches of Oats combines the trifecta of popular cereal ingredients.

In 1989, long-serving Post employee and cereal lover Vernon J. Herzing took his three favorite cereals – Toasties, Grape-Nuts Flakes, and Sugar Sparkle Flakes – and tried combining the three. Together with his daughter, Kimberly, they combined products until they landed on the perfect mix.

Its success has led to other flake-and-cluster cereals and myriad spinoffs.

#8. Rice Krispies are the product of an experiment and a gun.

In 1901, botanist Alexander Pierre Anderson wanted to know what might happen if he heated starch granules – he thought the water inside the granules would turn to steam and result in small puffing explosions (and of course, he was right). He then used a gas pipe and a sledgehammer to form a gun-like device that simplified the process.

He debuted his cool little trick at the 1904 World’s Fair and Quaker Oats snapped it up, marketing it as “food shot from guns.”

Interesting, right? You just never know what you’ll find online!

Pedialyte Is Officially Recognized as a Hangover Cure Now, So Stock Up

For years now, it’s been a relatively well-known secret within the partying crowd that Pedialyte can be used to combat their wicked hangovers. For years, adults trying recover from a long night out have had to pretend they’ve got a sick kid while buying Pedialyte, but now the company has officially jumped on the bandwagon.

The drinks are designed to replace fluids and electrolytes and prevent dehydration caused by vomiting, diarrhea, exercise, travel, and heat exhaustion (plus it tastes sweet and yummy, so your darling little one will actually drink it). And since those are basically also the symptoms of a nasty hangover, parents long ago figured out they could do double duty.

Well, the day has finally come, folks – you can now officially buy fizzy versions of the curative, clearly meant to get you back in the game after a long night.

The new product is called Sparkling Rush Powder and it comes in packages you dump into water and shake to combine. According to the website, they’re “a fizzy way to quickly replenish fluids and electrolytes lost to dehydration” and are “designed with an optimal balance of electrolytes and sugar.”

Whee! And since the powder gets fizzy, you can just pretend you’re still drinking with your friends instead of what you’re really doing: wondering how low you can turn the volume on Daniel Tiger before your kid loses interest.

Protip: It’s lower than you think, since their brand new ears are better than yours.

Just look at that packaging! Clearly not for children.

Right now, we’ve only found the packets online at Target or on Pedialyte’s website, but at $10.99 for six, they’re a pretty simple and reasonable way to maintain your sanity and get your body back to the mostly-crap shape it was in before you went out drinking.

Thank you, Pedialyte. It’s about damn time.

Payless Fooled a Bunch of Influencers with a Fake Shoe Store, and It Is Awesome

There’s something about this story that brngs me so much joy! Maybe it’s because I’m the type of person who’ll wear the same jeans/shoes/sweater basically until they wear out completely. I don’t really care too much about high fashion. My “stylishness” extends about as far as not looking like a total fool/slob in public. That’s it.

Honestly, it kind of blows my mind that people spend HUGE wads of cash on clothing and shoes when it doesn’t really look all that different from the stuff in cheaper stores. But what do I know?

Anyway, Payless, the budget-friendly brand that a lot of people would probably turn their noses up at, decided to play a brilliant trick on “influencers” out there, and it really just goes to show you how much brand matters in influencing the perception of the public.

The people behind the stunt opened up a pop-up shoe store in a Los Angeles mall called “Palessi” (classic) and invited influencers to the opening. The store was stocked with Payless shoes, but with huge markups.

They even created a fake website and a fake Instagram account. Take a look at this video to see how it all went down.

According to Payless, 80 people shopped at the store over the course of two days and spent around $3,000. One shopper spent $640 on a pair of boots that had been marked up 1,800%.

Payless CEO Sarah Couch said, “The campaign plays off of the enormous discrepancy and aims to remind consumers we are still a relevant place to shop for affordable fashion.”

I guess it’s safe to say that folks out there got seriously hoodwinked. Also, I want to be an “influencer.”
