Remember the days when you were young? What was the “cool” trend back then? For me, it was playing with POGS, listening to West Coast gangsta rap (RIP Tupac!) and wearing FUBU jeans.

AskReddit users bravely went on the record and shared the trends they got wrapped up in as youngsters that now make them cringe.

1. ’80s?

Taco Bell Has Plans to Open Up Its Own Resort in Palm Springs

Taco Bell fans, rejoice! It’s time to pack your bags and load up on hot sauce, because they just made a BIG announcement: Taco Bell will temporarily take over a resort in Palm Springs, California, giving fans a whole new level of Taco Bell experience.

I told you I wasn’t playing. I don’t joke about tacos, and I don’t joke about vacation. FYI.

The Bell will open on August 9, 2019, and will start taking reservations in June. The Taco Bell website says,

“Get ready for “Bell”hops and Baja Blasts, Fire Sauce and Sauce Packet floaties, because The Bell: A Taco Bell Hotel and Resort is opening for a limited time in Palm Springs this August, meant for 18+ superfans. Complete with exclusive Taco Bell menu items and plenty of surprises, The Bell is sure to be the spicy twist of your summer. So pack your swimsuit, mark your calendars and start the countdown, because The Bell is about to make all of your taco dreams come true.”

There will also be a gift shop stocked with Taco Bell-themed clothing, naturally.

It’s still unclear how long the Taco Bell pop-up hotel will actually be open for, so I guess we’ll have to wait and see…

Remember the “Dad Wagon?” It’s Making a Trendy Comeback

Fashion/trendiness is whatever looks great today, will look ridiculous in 10 years, and become “vintage cool” in 20 years.

It’s a tale as old as time. Whether it’s clothes, music, or cars, it seems that what is old will always become new again given enough time.

Take the Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon, for example. Popularly dubbed the “Dad Wagon,” it was the subject of a lot of ridicule when it first came out… and for many, many years after.

Well, these babies are back on the road – thanks largely to millennials who are quite obviously digging them in a major way.

Hagerty Insurance reported an almost 50% increase in quotes for the vintage Buicks from 2017 to 2018, meaning that the Roadmaster Estate Wagon was the most requested car by 14 percentage points.

What??

The Roadmaster Estate Wagons were produced by Buick from 1991 until 1996, and they just scream 1990s style, don’t they? The Roadmaster Wagons are a whopping 18 feet long, can seat 8 people, and feature a sunroof, which we all need in our lives. But there’s another reason why these vehicles are appealing: under the hood is a 5.7-liter LT1 V8 engine that has 260 horsepower. That engine, by the way, is the same kind used in Corvettes, Camaros, and Firebird Trans-AMs.

The price tag is nice as well. The average listing price for a Roadmaster Wagon in the Kelley Blue Book is $2,990. Not bad, not bad at all.

Jonathan Klinger, a spokesperson for Hagerty, said, “It’s a fun way to stand out for not a whole lot of money. It’s like driving a couch down the road: Big comfy seats that lack any sort of real driver-oriented support, but they’re just cushy and comfortable. And with the V-8 engine, it’s got a little bit of sleeper status to it.”

Volvo’s Latest Ad Campaign Has Got a Lot of People Talking

Volvo is the latest large company to jump on board the trend of progressive ad campaigns, the likes of which please many – while also riling up some in the process. Gillette’s recent campaigns discussing body positivity and toxic masculinity have received a decent amount of backlash, but clearly that’s not stopping other companies from testing the waters.

Recently, Volvo stuck a toe in with the ad above, revealing their new parental leave policy. It features an illustration depicting same-sex parents…and some of Volvo’s fans on Facebook are less than thrilled.

Volvo’s idea is simple:

“Being the human-centric and progressive company that we are, our EMEA team wondered: Can we extend those benefits to our employees outside Sweden? Turns out we can. To start with, we now introduce a paid, gender-neutral parental leave policy for all our sales company employees in the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) offering parents a total of six months of leave with 80 percent pay.”

The head of the company’s HR department added that the initiative is “one of several activities with the aim to create an inclusive culture and attract and retain a diverse set of people. It improves life-work balance, boosts family time, and fits with a progressive, human-centric company like Volvo Cars.”

It’s worth noting that there were also plenty of people applauding the company’s forward thinking ad.

It’s a walkable planter that searches for sunlight on behalf of your plants (and seeks shade when the plant has had enough). So far, sounds like a wonderful, genius idea, right? Like maybe you’ll buy one and take advantage of all the air freshening and toxin-reducing goodness plants bring into your home?

Wait.

If you forget to water the plant, the HEXA basically throws a temper tantrum until you give it a drink. Like a foot-stomping toddler, though admittedly it’s probably not quite as hard to turn off (or assuage in any way).

The idea came to founder Sun Tianqi after he glimpsed a dead sunflower and couldn’t stop thinking about how its life could have been saved.

“In 2014, I went to see a sunflower exhibition and found myself focused on a dead sunflower near a ground of blooms. The dead flower sat in a place that was always in a shadow. I had no idea how it ended up there or why it died – whether it was because of the lack of sunshine or water – but it was just there, and it was dead. I thought, if it could move a little bit, take a 30-feet walk out of the shadow to where the other sunflowers were, it would have lived healthily.”

And so the walking flowerpot was born and improved (if you call stomping its feet until it gets water an improvement). One can be yours for a mere $949.

Yeah. Well, happy plants don’t come cheap.

Just as doctors despise when patients quote WebMD or Grey’s Anatomy, and lawyers roll their eyes when someone brings up Law & Order (or one of the other 100 million legal dramas), real estate agents are having to bite their tongues and smile when people claim to know what they’re doing because they spend a lot of time watching HGTV.

Now, I watch a ton of HGTV. Property Brothers, Fixer Upper, House Hunters, Love It or List It – I’ve seen them all (and most of the episodes, too), and I know I’m guilty for thinking that I know about the biz because of it.

Which means I need to check out these 4 falsehoods perpetrated by television dramatizations of house hunting, just the same as the rest of y’all.

So, let’s do it.

#1. If everything isn’t exactly the way you want it, keep looking.

In reality, you’re probably not going to find a house that’s updated to the nines and within your budget, so keep in mind that you’ll probably live there for several years – enough time for you to make changes over time as you can afford them.

#2. You’ll only have to look at like 3 houses before you find “the one.”

If you’re not a first time home buyer, you likely know this already. My search took months and dozens of tours before a decision could be made.

#3. Renovations happen quickly.

The longest timeline I’ve seen on any of those shows is like 7 weeks to completely overhaul a house from the studs on up. In reality, those types of renovations can take months, or even years. Contractors are just not that into you, I promise.

#4. Going over your budget is no big deal.

It really is, and you and your co-buyer (if applicable) should sit down before you even start looking to determine what size mortgage you can afford without struggling down the road. (Just think back to 2009…)

All of a sudden I’m less pumped about moving later this year. Oh, well.

5 Great Reasons to Wear the Same Outfit on a Daily Basis

We live in a society where the “clothes make the man” (or the woman). There’s a lot of pressure to look sharp and dress to impress. Some of us take it more seriously than others, but there’s no denying that a lot of people drop a ton of cash on trying to keep up with the latest trends and styles.

In a move beyond fashion pressure, Joshua Becker, a writer, conducted a sort of anti-fashion experiment, just to see what it was like. He wore the same outfit every single day: a dark grey T-shirt and khaki pants.

Becker said that after one week of wearing his new “uniform”, nobody even paid attention anymore. He said, “and in that silence, I was liberated.”

Here are Becker’s five reasons for trying this experiment for a week. Maybe you’ll decide it’s for you and you’ll become a whole new person, who knows?

1. Forever fashion

Quality over quantity: it’s as simple as that. Before you buy a new item of clothing, ask yourself if you’re really going to want to wear it down the road – i.e. if it will be “forever fashion.” If the answer is no, don’t bother. Resist the temptation, friends!

Becker says, “I value the quality of friendships more than anything. It goes without saying, but I’ll choose quality over quantity any day. By adopting this same mentality for clothing, you can evaluate what articles are most important to you. Similarly, when you go to buy new items, imagine its place in your closet years from now.

Will you still want it? Trendiness is challenging to chase, and provides an infinite opportunity for spending. Instead, focus on quality goods that can last years and, potentially, by brands who encourage you to repair and recycle before you buy new.”

2. Less laundry, more free time

As we get older, it seems like our free time fades away like an old memory. Everyone is so busy with work, friends, family, etc. So why spend a bunch of your time doing laundry? Bottom line: the less you have to wash, the more free time you’ll have to do whatever you want: exercise, read, go to the movies, anything you want! I’m talking about quality of life here, people.

Becker said about this, “A week later, I threw my shirt and jeans in the laundry for a much-needed wash. By consuming less throughout the week, I had less to clean. Again, I could focus on what’s most important: time with my family. Rather than washing, drying, and folding clothes for half a day, I could play, read, and listen.”

3. Reduce the fatigue of decision making

I’d not thought of it this way before, but it really does ring true. Freeing yourself from the process of deciding what to wear gives you more free time and energy to focus on the more important things in your life.

Becker says, “We cannot escape decisions. Even in our dreams, we’re thinking about what to do next. Every option drains us. Decisions with larger consequences take more of our energy, too. When tired, people make more short-term, instant-gratification decisions.

Conspicuous consumption becomes more common amidst this fatigue. While it might seem small, adopting a more universal, uniform outfit might provide you greater decision-making power for the day.”

4. Find what works for you, repeat

We all experiment with fashion and image as we grow up (that’s why some photos are so hard to look back on). But once you settle on a look, it’s all gravy baby, as some people like to say. Find your look, and never worry about it again!

Becker says, “Since I’ve adopted a minimalist lifestyle, I have looked for basics that work across situations. My most frequent outfit these days tends to be a nice-fitting black T-shirt and casual khaki pants. By wearing one thing for a week, I was tested. Would I get bored?

Did this really look good on me? Interestingly, I recognized what clothes were most important to me. Finding your “look” can take time, but realizing what you feel confident and comfortable in is empowering.”

5. Minimalism

It’s liberating to rid yourself of all the junk you’ve accumulated throughout the years. Endless piles of t-shirts, pants, shoes, etc. Once you get rid of the stuff you know you’re never, ever going to wear again, your closet and your life will be much less cluttered.

According to Becker, “Minimalism is about focusing on what matters most, while ridding the rest. It quickly applies across situations; especially, for clothing. Over the years, I’ve actively applied this philosophy and avoided replacing items.

Slowly, I’ve centered on my most important items. My closet is smaller and neater than ever before. And when I look for something to wear, I effortlessly see my favorites.”

I think this sounds like a great idea. My wardrobe is already pretty limited anyway, but this little experiment might force me to get rid of even more clothing.

The survey is in its 15th year and is used by spirits company to see where their brands stand with these important point of sale influencers.

Nabisco Sets Animal Crackers Free from Their Circus Cages

It’s a symbolic gesture, but an important one, nonetheless. After 116 years, the famous Barnum’s Animal Crackers have a brand new box design – and the details are important.

That’s right, the animals have been “freed” – they are no longer in cages and behind bars. A push from folks at PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) helped to spark the change.

The new design shows the animals walking across the savannah with no bars, cages, or chains in sight. PETA’s people got in touch with the company back in 2016 and suggested it might be a good idea to show the animals in their natural environments.

Several companies make animal crackers, but Nabisco’s Barnum brand has been the most popular for decades. The brand was named after the legendary P.T. Barnum, and Nabisco started manufacturing the cookies in 1902. Obviously,  attitudes towards animals have changed since then.

Times have changed so much that in May 2017, the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey circus closed business for good.

In a statement, PETA said, “The new box for Barnum’s Animals perfectly reflects that our society no longer tolerates caging and chaining exotic animals for circus shows.”
