15 People Weigh in on the Idea of a 4-Day Work Week

Microsoft Japan recently tested a 4-day workweek and reported upsides galore – but do you think it would work across the board? What would be the benefits? The downsides?

Well, these 15 Redditors have thought it through, and their musings are definitely a good place to start.

15. More time to dig into what you love.

Life would be that much better. I would have somewhere around 50 extra days a year to do all the yardwork and home projects that I don’t want to spend all weekend doing.

14. It’s just science, people.

While having the option to do 4 10 hour days would be nice (people could decide if it would improve their lives), it’s a terrible plan from the perspective of societal benefit. No matter how much idiot workoholics claim otherwise, productivity is not steady across an 8 hour day. Most people can do, in a 6 hour day, the same level of productivity they could in an 8. Maybe 10% less. MAYBE.

If we want to make society better people should work closer in line to school. 9-3 (30 hour week) makes a lot more sense and then most of us wouldn’t need a 4 day week to get stuff done. There’d still be time to get stuff done during the week.

And those without kids? Give them the option of 4 8 hour days. Most of them would probably prefer the day off.

13. People don’t want to be shells.

Describing my life even with time off for vacation. I work 205 days per year, about 10-12 hrs per day (salaried), and I’m a shell of a person. No matter how hard I work, there is no progress, nothing gets better, the system sucks the soul from you, people come up with ideas that make things worse, everyone pretends like things are good, and no one has the resources to do what needs to get done.

12. Oh, how I wish this mentality would prevail.

In my experience, people will still slack off if they have the ability to, especially if they getting paid by the hour. Give them the incentive of “you can go home when you get x finished” and the uptick in productivity is amazing. Though, you also run the risk of half assed work that way.

11. Some people definitely love it.

My new job is 4 day, ten hour work shifts (Wed-Sat, 7:30 – 6) and it’s honestly worth it just for the 3 day weekend.

I have yet to feel a case of the “Mondays”, I’m properly rested despite 10 hour shifts, and Mondays/Tuesdays are perfect “odd” days for things like hitting the gym, grocery shopping etc. since it’s hardly crowded.

10. The three-day weekend is huge.

My company switched to 4 10 hour days. We are diesel technicians and work 7-5:30. Half of us work Monday through Thursday and the other half work Tuesday through Friday. We have did this for over two years and we all love it. It is so nice to have a three day weekend every week. Another thing about it that is nice is if you doctors appointment or something I can make it on a Monday and don’t have to miss any work.

9. When you love what you do…

It really depends on the work. I’ve worked jobs where 30 hours was hell, jobs where 60 was a breeze, and everything in between. I remember one particularly long couple weeks (pretty sure I cleared 160 hours that pay period) that was stressful at first but turned into a cakewalk with a lot of babysitting equipment and just being available at the site if the remote engineers needed my hands for something (and steak/beer on the company dime every night for 2 weeks,) but I also remember a summer at a different job with 4 12s a week in a 120 degree room full of plastic fumes and a plant supervisor that saw sitting down instead of standing at a sorting table as some sort of moral failing…

8. Even for less money.

Fuck it. I’ll take the drop in salary. My biggest complain…probably in general, is that there is no way to take extra time off. I can only take 2.5 weeks a year and that is just stupid. Life becomes slaving away constantly without leaving the same 10 mile radius. That goes on for decades. Leads to extreme depression.

We only get one life and we make a sick joke out of it because there is no other way to survive. And then it degrades your morale even more until you are a helpless husk of a person who can’t find a way out.

7. Let’s all stop working for the weekend.

I would gladly work 4 ten hour days to have an extra day off. 2 day weekends are too short. They’re gone just as soon as you start to feel comfortable

6. Way too much time, indeed.

I feel like people are missing the point, which is that we need to shorten the work week/amount of time spent at work. When people say we should switch to 4 day work weeks, they don’t mean 4 tens or 4 twelves. We need to WORK LESS, meaning 4 day weeks that are still 8 hour days (or less, because most people could get the same amount of work done in 4 five or six hour days as they do spreading it out over 5 eights and procrastinating at work as much as they can). With adding in commuting time, and any time outside of work spent thinking about work, answering texts or emails, etc., the average adult spends way too much time on work.

5. There are benefits for employers, too.

My employer gives us every other Friday off. We work 80 hours over 9 days (M-F, M-Th). It’s really helpful to have those Fridays to schedule appointments, and I have less desire to burn PTO throughout the year just to take a much-needed Friday off (through the end of October, I had only used 2.5 PTO hours for the year, mostly for doctor’s visits). The only real downside is that on the Fridays that we do work, nobody wants to do anything.

4. You’ll still need work-life balance.

I’ve stopped donating time and freely use the phrase “donating time”, which nips in the bud any implied requirement to work past 40 hrs. My bosses have always known if there’s an emergency, I’ll be there with bells on and do whatever it takes (including being on site until 4 in the morning and back to work the next day), but other than that, they know to leave me alone.

Don’t get me started on the ‘must take an hour for lunch’ standard. The entire point of that is they know a lot of people will work at their desk while eating, so they get 9 hrs out of you instead of 8. I take my full hour at a local park.

Work-life balance is all about setting boundaries.

3. You can’t lose the benefits, though.

I’ll take the drop in salary.

Me, too. My biggest concern is that health insurance, retirement benefits, etc., are tied to employment in the United States. I’d happily work fewer hours for less pay if I could also maintain healthcare coverage and other benefits.

Health insurance and retirement benefits shouldn’t be tied to employment. It hamstrings employees, effectively retracting our freedom to move on to other employment or start our own businesses.

2. It could ease up on stress.

I work 4 9 hour days and then half-day Fridays. The Fridays themselves are awesome because even though it’s a “half day”, with the proximity to the weekend and how many people take those days off they’re barely work days at all. Not stressful at all. This is awesome too because you can get a 3 day weekend by only taking a half-vacation day.

The biggest downside that people don’t realize is how much working a 9 hour (or 10 hour, usually I’m here from 8-6) day really sucks. You arrive when it’s dark, you leave when it’s dark, and by the time you get home it’s 6:30/7 and you can do 1 thing before needing to go to bed. Working out, cooking, cleaning, all become a lot harder when you’re home at that hour instead of home at 5/5:30 every day.

The half day Fridays themselves can be a lot of fun in summer when there are things to do, but you know what happens in winter? I go home at 12 and sleep for a couple hours to make up for sleep deprivation earlier in the week lol. It all evens out in the end.

1. More tools to fight rising depression.

Working a 5 day work week just makes life seem so much more pointless. By the time I get the other things I need to do (grocery shopping, appointments, etc.) done, its Sunday night. A 4 day work week might give me time to play the piano I bought to combat depression.

I mean, working one less day is kind of a no-brainer, right? I definitely think so.

Would you rather keep the status quo? Sound off as to why or why not in the comments!

15 Men Share the Moment They Knew They Wanted a Divorce

Marriage is tough, and the truth is (at least in my experience) that not everyone gets it right on the first (or second) try. It stands to reason, then, that there’s a moment for many of us when we realized that staying married to the person sharing our lives and our beds just wasn’t going to be an option.

If you’re curious what puts men over the edge in a relationship, well, these 15 guys are down to share.

15. I bet he wishes he could take the $15k back.

Not me, but one of my best friends(got his permission to post). He got a pretty substantial year end bonus from work. He decided to use most of it for his wife’s Christmas gift and pay off her remaining student loans (~$14,700) and the remaining portion to buy a new computer chair for when he gamed (~$300).

Christmas morning (he was nice enough to let me stay at his place when I traveled for work as he lived 20 minutes from the airport) we all woke up, and had breakfast. His family and her parents came over and we started exchanging gifts.

Besides paying off her loans, he had gotten her a few times items. She opened the card saying her loans were paid off she just sat there for a minute. After the silence, and assuming she was kinda in shock, she asked “did you seriously not get me anything else? I bought you that stupid keyboard (the wrong one btw) and you only got me a few things?”

At that point, his brother in law and myself decided to go hang out in another room for a while they ended up getting into a huge fight. A day later when he was dropping me off at the airport he told me that he was going to visit a lawyer and get a divorce.

14. That’ll do it.

When a friend’s wife said to me “You know your wife is sleeping with my husband.”

13. Too bad you couldn’t take your stepdaughter with you.

When my stepdaughter became a teenager, my ex ramped up the nutso. She had always been an impatient, angry screamer of a parent. But as my stepdaugher became a young woman, my ex just went crazy with envy or something. I know lots of moms have a hard time with teenage daughters, but their base level patience is so much better than my ex’s was. Threats of cutting hair in middle of night while daughter slept, pulling hair, slapping face, ridiculing in front of her friends, swinging something that missed and put a hole in the wall – I was out, with the kids.

12. Second chances should be more than enough.

I was working on a mother daughter scrapbook as a Christmas present for her. Was going through her Google photos account looking for pics of them together. Came across a selfie she took with some dude laying on her. Confirmed her second affair. Knew it was over the moment I saw it. That has fucked me up pretty good.

11. I would have gone for the drama and the free drinks.

We flew across the country for her sister’s wedding. She didn’t say a word to me the entire time since we had parked at the airport. Once we landed at our destination, we walked to baggage claim (absolute silence preceding for several hours now). At the carousel, I picked up her bag when she took it out of my hand and calmly stated, “None of my family knows you’re here–I told them I came alone.” She walked out of the airport and left me there.

Narcissistic Personality Disorder made for some really fun scenarios.

10. He’s got some great friends.

When my buddies approached me to complain that she kept sitting on their laps, wiggling, and hoping for an erection.

9. Not that he needed permission, but.

When she falsely told our marriage counselor that I punched her.

The next week, she denied saying it and accused our counselor of lying. He gave me a “You should leave this relationship” look. I took that look as permission from a professional that I definitely wasn’t making the wrong decision. Got divorced and never looked back.

I legitimately feared for my safety towards the end — not that she would hurt me, but that she would make a false accusation to the cops or a crazy friend.

Edit: shortened the story

8. That’s a big ol’ yikes.

The morning I saw a picture of some dudes dick on her phone. She was classy enough to bring him to the divorce proceedings…

7. It’s hard to watch people make your kids feel like that.

My wife was around less & less…had to be free to live her life, go out with her friends. More often than not she would call me to pick our daughter up from daycare, after promising to pick her up & have some girl time…..just tell her I’m working late or not feeling well. She always had something better to do & the kids were old enough to know better. I went to pick our daughter up one day, when they called her name she came running over until she saw it wasn’t mom, again, slumped her shoulders & slowly walked over to ask “what’s her excuse this time?” That was the breaking point, told her to get out, even helped pay her security deposit to get her out.

6. It’s okay to be happily divorced.

During the last year and a half of our marriage she became extremely psychologically abusive. She was a narcissist, controlled my every move, would isolate me, refused physical contact, I was just an extension to her life, was not allowed to talk to any female, was not allowed to hang out with any friends or she would ignore me for up to 5 days at a time, double standards everywhere, verbal abuse and the list can continue but it hurts to think about. The last straw for me was when she threatened to kill me because I came home from work late even though she knew I would be home late. It was just a little too late for her and she also threatened to hit me the same day. This was the second time this happened and I talked with several people at work about it and they suggested that I run. I had texts of the threats on my phone and contacted a lawyer that same week. She agreed to sign since I told her I would take severe legal action if she didn’t. Thankfully no children and it was a clean divorce and I’m happily divorced.

5. A good deal for whom, exactly?

I was a Lance Corporal bringing home scraps for a paycheck to an unemployed wife who one day brought home a brand new Lexus IS350 because she “got a good deal on it.” Apparently I was supposed to pay the $800/mo bill. I didn’t think it was a good deal.

4. Poor little dear.

She let me know she was pregnant and wanted my permission to tell all her girlfriends during a girls’ night out.
Since I knew there was no possible way it was my child, she was also unknowingly admitting to having an affair. (I can math, and she can’t). It was with her boss.
Lawyered up the next day, and he ate her alive in court. I got primary custody of our child we already had, and child support, and a sheriff’s notice that she had to vacate my home in 30 days.
I never knew she could be that stupid.

3. This one has to win some kind of award.

When she staged a robbery of our house so she could pawn all of my shit for drug money.

2. Oprah always knows best.

she made me watch Oprah and there was a quiz. Is Your Marriage Okay or not type thing. In my head I saw 7 or 10 items that were Not Okay. She didn’t see any. We had already been to counseling.

1. Shenanigans are overrated.

When she presented a picture of our four-year-old daughter and me laying next to each other on the couch watching Blues Clues to our marriage counselor as evidence of my “inappropriate conduct” around our kids.

Thank God he saw right through that bullshit immediately and told her to knock it off.

Edit: There is no Joe. #notmySteve

Edit 2: Many asked, so here’s the deal. We’ve been divorced almost five years now. The process wasn’t fair, but that wasn’t really my ex’s fault. No allegations of child abuse or misconduct were brought up against me during the proceedings, so that was good. They wouldn’t have flown for a minute in court anyway.

Our kids are older now and every day are becoming better equipped to see and understand the difference between what’s reasonable and right and what’s simply just batshit insane–and it’s not working out all that well for their mother, who hasn’t changed her MO much if at all since we parted ways. So it goes.

I’m happily remarried now to a woman with kids of her own–kids who were friends and schoolmates of MY kids before she and I even got to know each other. They’re all OUR kids now. Life is good. No more shenanigans.

Those are some doozies that I have no idea how they could have come back from, so yeah. Probably a good decision.

People Share 15 Stories of Intense Hallucinations Caused by Sleep Deprivation

It is used as a torture technique (by some), and if you’ve ever been a new parent experiencing chronic sleep deprivation or someone with an illness causing acute or chronic sleeplessness, you probably already know that it’s no joke.

If it’s never happened to you, though, the intensity of these 15 hallucinations should definitely convince you to be eternally grateful for that fact.

15. As long as you don’t start to feed it.

14. When even keeping your eyes open doesn’t help.

13. You kind of ARE going crazy.

12. Like deja vu you just can’t shake.

11. When you have no idea what day it is. Or was.

10. Ever thought about what your donut delivery might be costing someone?

9. Try unpacking that in therapy.

8. When you start to hear (the wrong) colors.

7. It’s always the cats.

6. A horror story, for real.

5. Why a construction worker? Brains are weird.

4. This is your brain on drugs…and no sleep.

3. Do not recommend.

2. Creepy as hell.

1. Time to pull over.

I’ve been tired, even sleep-deprived, but never like this. Thank goodness.

Do you have any horror stories that resulted from too little sleep?

Women Share How Guys Can Approach Them Without Being Creepy

Approaching a stranger in public is always intimidating, and there are guys out there who want to know how to do it right. No one wants to come off as creepy or desperate, and they certainly don’t want girls reaching for their pepper spray.

So, some girls on Reddit have chimed in with advice – take it or leave it. I’d take it though cause I think they’re trying to help.

15. An interesting tidbit should always grease the wheels.

“Hey, did you know that Pac-Man’s original name was Puck-Man? It’s based on paku paku, the japanese term for chewing. But when the game went to America they got worried people would change the ‘P’ to an ‘F’… So that’s Pac-Man now.”

14. Respect the headphones or book.

Don’t automatically hit on me or just assert yourself. Bring in common interests or ask me a simple question like “Oh is that a Manchester Orchestra shirt?” or something like that. I’m super friendly and will talk to most people as long as I don’t feel threatened or uncomfortable. If I have my headphones in or I’m reading a book, please don’t start a length conversation with me.

13. Try to seem actually interested.

It won’t come off as creepy if you start with something that seems like a genuine interest. I go to book stores A LOT and a guy once chatted to me about how much he liked Murakami since I was looking at some of those titles. This could be something like a band shirt or a video game they’re looking at playing. Basically it’s like you see us as a person with interests and feelings rather than someone you’re just trying to bang.

Not only does it make you seem like you’re actually interested, but you’ll most likely find a girl you actually have something in common with, rather than just a random human you find physically attractive.

12. Guys. Listen to her.

Keep an eye open for signs of wanting to be left alone, like wearing headphones or reading a book.

edit: okay, so 7k upvotes, and an inbox telling me I’m trash and wrong. Okay, Reddit.

11. Genuine compliments take work, but they’re worth it.

give a genuine compliment on something small you’ve noticed – an accessory, personality trait or her laugh. or try to notice something she’s noticing, or looking at, and comment on it!

10. It is true that girls like snacks.

A guy at a bus stop asked me what my favorite snack was. We talked about popcorn for ten minutes before the bus got there. By the time we boarded the bus, I was really wanting some popcorn and he asked me if I wanted to go see a movie and get some popcorn. Of course I did. That guy was a genius. Girls like snacks.

EDIT (since a few people are curious)we dated for 5 months. He was a great man, but we had different goals. I’m sure he’s still hanging out in Austin, you can probably run into him at any S 1st bar.

9. Here’s what NOT to do.

One thing I’ve noticed is that a lot of guys don’t think it’s creepy to ask where I live if I’m on/waiting for public transport. If you’ve just met me and open with that, there’s no way I’m telling you any more locally than in the town/city we are already in. I’ve asked guy friends about it though and they all seemed genuinely surprised that I thought it was creepy. Have gotten off buses early before because of this because I’ve felt uncomfortable with a stranger knowing where I live. Don’t get me wrong, if we’ve been chatting and it’s likely we’d chat again then it’s ok to ask, but not in the first 2 minutes.

Edit: for clarification, I understand that a specific address isn’t being asked for, but if I’m on a bus you can guess it’s somewhere along that route or if it’s at a stop ( which in my experience is more likely) you’ve got an even better idea to start with that I live close by. If you’re immediately following up with ‘because I know about XYZ which is local and interesting’ that’s probably fine and not creepy. Sorry to anyone who’s favourite pick up line has been insulted /s

8. He’s not wrong, even if he did jump in on a girl’s thread.

I once said to a girl “hey we are in the same math class right?” And now we are married.

Always take math guys. ALWAYS. that’s the key.

EDIT: Based on the responses I’ve received, math is the way to go. Seems a lot of people out there have meet their SO due to a math class. And for those asking, yes I did actually have a math class with her. No, I did not ask her this while in said math class. rolls eyes Thanks for the laughs and stories guys.

7. Yes. Girls are people.

Guy here that learned a hard lesson.

It’s not about how to approach girls. Learn how to approach people.

The easiest way is to compliment every time something catches your eye. To everybody. NOT something they were born with or generic. Things like “I love the pattern on that shirt!” or “Hey, that necklace is super cool!” I’ve even complimented makeup.

The next step is to read their response. Did they ignore you or just give a simple “thanks” and move on? Move on, they took the compliment but aren’t interested in conversation. Did they get mad? Keep practicing, you picked something they weren’t intentionally trying to show you. Did they brighten up and start talking? Carry on, friend, you nailed it!

The idea is simple. They picked the thing you complimented because they thought it looked good. Complimenting that is validating their taste and nothing more, which if done casually is REALLY hard to be creepy or annoying. And as an added bonus, it’s assumed you are saying they look good in it. So it’s two compliments in one with almost no risk of doing it wrong.

6. Don’t try too hard to keep the conversation going.

Find anything you can in common. Just bring up your common interest. Make sure you ask open ended questions, so the conversation doesn’t seem forced.

As long as it feels like a genuine interest, it won’t come off as creepy.

5. Simple, yet effective.

“Hey, wanna see pictures of my cat?”

4. This would work with graphic tees.

“I like your shirt. I don’t get the reference but it looks cool.” Boom opens dialogue and a interest in what she’s interested in.

3. At least pretend to have a common interest.

One very important thing to keep in mind:

Approaching with no perception of any common interests will make it difficult to have a genuine conversation that doesn’t feel forced. For example, don’t just approach someone random because you think they’re pretty, only to have this be your only point of attraction. Many girls will write off guys who do this because their intentions are clearly superficial from the get go. Sure, he was interested in starting a conversation, but his initial attention wasn’t drawn by anything substantial.

Instead, try to observe a possible common interest to start your conversation with. This could be anything from a band t-shirt from a band you like, to something you overheard her say earlier that shows you have something in common you can talk about. If you want to increase your chances of success with this, try meeting people at places where common-interests congregate. For example, people who go to art exhibitions generally have an eye for art. People who go to comic conventions are generally nerdy. People who go to video game tournaments are generally gamers. People who go to sporting events are generally sport fans. This automatically gives you something to talk about, or a small base on which to build a more stable conversation.

If you want to further avoid being creepy or annoying, don’t go into it with a “flirting” mindset. Girls know that guys who flirt with them before even knowing who they are tend to be shallow men with superficial motivations. Get to know someone based on conversation first. IF that conversation goes really well and you feel like you’re hitting it off, and you’ve guessed that they’re single, playfulness and mild flirting isn’t out of the question.

Tips for the nervous and socially awkward!:

Don’t push yourself to get to know people who aren’t reciprocating your conversational attempts, or who seem disinterested. It’s usually not a reflection on you, it’s a reflection of you BOTH. The other person may just not be interested at the time, or may not share your enthusiasm for the topic at hand. That’s ok! A simple “it’s been nice chatting with you, see you around!” Will suffice.

Don’t force yourself to be interested in a PERSON for the sake of conversation. Try expressing your interest in something within the ENVIRONMENT and then bring the person into that conversation. Examples: art at a museum, cheer stunts at a sport event, video game demos at a convention, pool game at the bar, there’s always something in the environment that they may already be engaged with. This is a good chance to talk to someone. It puts a lot less pressure on a stranger when they feel like your mutual interest in something ELSE is the reason to continue the conversation, not your interest in THEM. (This also takes pressure off of you, because you can direct “get to know you” questions at them, or you can talk about the thing in front of you both).

If you get rejected or have a disinterested reaction at any point, remember that this is a reflection of your compatibility with THAT person, not all people.

EDIT: thanks to everyone for the massive support and appreciation on this comment. Dyadic relations is my field and I’ve helped a lot of people with this irl. I’m MORE THAN happy to share this advice with Reddit. Thanks to whoever gave me Reddit Silver AND NOW GOLD! You’re a true gem <3

2. Extra tip: actually listen to her answer.

Yes! This is exactly it! Approaching girls is just approaching people. I agree with all the examples given in this comment, but would also add that I particularly like when people start talking to me about random observations that we sort of share in, about wherever we are.

For example, we’re in line at the grocery store. Someone behind me might say, “Hey, do you always come to this store? Is it always this busy on Sundays?”

Then we’re going to have a conversation about what time of day is best at all the nearby grocery stores, including that one.

If we’re at a restaurant, someone might say, “Have you ever tried the the chicken cacciatore here?”

To which I would reply, “Well, I’m vegetarian, so I haven’t tried that, but can very positively recommend the pasta primavera. What are some of your other favorite Italian foods?”

Or if we’re anywhere, and someone drives by in a really interesting car, point it out! I love stuff like that!

Just any question or observation that you’d make with a fellow human being is the way to go.

1. It’s okay to back off if she – or you – aren’t feeling it.

Make a comment about something happening around you. If you’re at a bar or coffee shop or restaurant and some random is doing something funny or wearing something weird, point it out. Say a guy across the room is wearing a huge purple hat, say something like “Do you see that guy’s hat? It’s crazy. Would you wear something like that?” And if she responds with a grunt or a single word answer, then she isn’t interested and go back to your friends or do your own thing. If she responds with a whole sentence, like “I like his hat, I’d wear that,” then go ahead and keep talking to her.

Three pieces of advice:

Back off if she doesn’t seem interested in the conversation.

If you have a genuinely good conversation (meaning you actually got along well), offer her your number. If she’s interested, she’ll reach out. If she takes it and isn’t interested, she felt obligated to take it but she wasn’t interested. If she doesn’t take it, say something like, “Well, thank you for the conversation!” or “Have a good night/day!” and smile, then go do your own thing, especially if you’re sat next to each other at a restaurant or something and there’s no leaving until one of you gets the check. Go on your phone or something to end the conversation fully so she can relax and get back to her own stuff.

Don’t get ahead of yourself. If you’re going to talk to someone, don’t make it about getting her number or seeing her again before you even know if you connect. Conversations with strangers are only creepy if you feel like they are trying to get something from you. If they’re enjoying the conversation and are happy to stay at a conversation, it won’t be creepy. Think of the difference between having chill small talk with the cashier at a grocery store and the kiosk guy who follows you a few steps at the mall. One feels desperate and annoying, and the other is relaxed and can be fun.

If you’re looking for a new podcast and are interested in dating, I highly recommend “U up?” The hosts are a man (Jared Fried) and woman (Jordana Abraham) in their 30s and take listener emails about dating and relationships. They do a good job at presenting actionable steps towards being a more fun dater. I listen to it every week because they are hilarious and have very different perspectives on most of dating issues young people face.

As a woman, I have to agree with these ladies!

What do you think about pickup lines, and meeting strangers out in public? If you have any tricks for weeding them out, please share in the comments!

Parents Discuss How They Decide Whether or Not They Like Their Kid’s Date

Parenting: it’s not for the faint of heart, and smiling and trying to act like you’re not ready to cut a person who is responsible not only for your child’s intimate safety, but for their emotional safety, is one of the hardest things (I imagine).

That’s what we do when they bring home someone new, though – we grin, say nice to meet you, size them up, and hope for the best.

If you, like me, haven’t reached this stage yet, you might wonder how easy or hard it is to assess these strangers as they come into your life.

Luckily, we have Reddit, and these parents are willing to share.

15. Trying and achieving are two different things.

My daughter(13) wanted me to meet her first “real” boyfriend. I was nice and pleasant, but I knew it wouldn’t last cause he was all looks and no brains. Of course, as jr high relationships go, it was about a 2 month ordeal. I think all parents should try and be cordial, unless the person feels like a serial killer or something.

14. This is an amazing move.

My daughter just started dating. She was mortified when I picked them up and asked if everything was Gucci.

13. Bottom line, sometimes you have to give it time.

When my oldest daughter introduced her first serious boyfriend, he was an awkward kind of guy, was pretty unremarkable, but he got super animated about topics that interested him. I had a chat with him about my daughter… he got animated. They’ve been married for 9 years. Good guy, works hard, is a staunch advocate for his wife, and I love his smile when he looks at their kids.

My oldest son’s first girlfriend was… not an emotional investment he was willing to make. she was pretty, but that was it. I scolded him, he got defensive, almost married her, but she made the mistake of asking my son about my money…. About a year later he brought home a beautiful, talented woman with an electric personality and more self confidence than even my cocksure eldest, and I was never more proud of him than when he took that dive. Their kids are incredible… great couple.

My second daughter just introduced us to a college friend of hers. He seems like a decent person. He’s young, but he’s got a head on his shoulders and seems able to conduct himself politely. I’ll need more time to figure it out.

My youngest son had a high school sweetheart girlfriend that’s now his college girlfriend. When I first met her she was 9, so I’m pretty enamored with her. Her parents have babysat and house sat for us, and they’re all good people.

My youngest daughter has introduced me to a girlfriend from her trade school recently. Pretty sure she has been dating her for a couple years. She’s angry, contrary, and bitter. Under all that baggage it’s hard to tell, but I’m hoping that my home can be a place where she can just let whatever angers her so much disappear for a while and I can find out who she actually is. I’ve asked a good friend of my daughter’s if there’s ever been any signs of violence, as that’s my only real concern, but so far it seems fine on that front. My youngest has always been a bit more subdued and contemplative than my others, so I’m hoping that whatever bitterness is in her girlfriend’s life doesn’t hurt her. This relationship is the most concerning one to me, because my daughter is a very sensitive person, and I fear for her happy, cheerful spirit.

Edit: thanks for the silver and gold, kind strangers ?

12. Make sure you’re emotionally prepared for this one.

This is a tough subject. My daughters started dating a guy when she turned 17. He said he had two jobs. He said he came from a rough childhood so he didn’t like to talk about his family. He told us they were refugees from haiti who moved to the us to better thier lives. He said his family one day just decided to move from our state to the other side of the country. We all would ask questions but he would just shut up. It was troubling but he was polite, seemed kind. He called me mom he was visiting everyday. Then my daughter turned 18 and they moved in together. I felt it was too soon but she thought she was in love.

He was still his nice quiet self in front of our family. My daughter began telling me he didn’t want to cook or clean and just wanted to play PS4 while she worked full time. I told her to keep talking to him about how she was becoming unhappy. He would make her promises but continue to do what he was doing. She worked graveyards so he would say he worked during the day and she’d believe him. She had a puppy who he agreed to look after and clean up for as a shared responsibility. He wasn’t doing this at night when she was at work or when he was off.

She had an opportunity to go to Disneyland for a week as a babysitter for her little cousins. After making sure her he was ok with it she went. She got home a day early to surprise her dog on his birthday. She found him lethargic with no food or water and no ac on In the hot az weather. She broke up with her boyfriend then and there. She said her dog was like her son and she wasn’t going to stand for that type of neglect.

I picked her up and her exboyfriend followed her out. He was polite telling me to not let her leave him I told him to give it a few days. After we left I could tell her voice was hoarse she said they had a loud argument.

The next morning she asked her dad and I to take her back to her apartment so they could talk, she could get some of her stuff and leave on good terms with him. I asked if we could go in with her she said”no mom I’m an adult i got this”. I jokingly asked if she was going to take her dog to protect her. She said ‘no as long as he’s with you I know he will be well taken care of”. Her words made me joke with her and ask if she was going to run away or something she just laughed and called me silly.

She kept in contact with me and at noonish asked me to get her. We went and there was no answer. It sounded like the apartment was empty. We called the cops they did a wellness check 5 hours later after we begged and begged. We had searched everywhere and called everyone she knew but they both had disappeared.

We kept going back to the apartment hoping wherever they went they had come back but still nothing. A neighbor brought me a chair to sit to wait outside the apartment until she came. I sat staring at one point on the wall as long as I sat there. I had a fear so primal and deep it slowed down my thought process. Another neighbor came to me and said she heard we were looking for my daughter. What she said next made my blood run cold. She said “I saw your daughter around 1230 or 1 her boyfriend was kicking her and dragging her by the hair into the apartment.”

I called 911 again because I knew whatever we found in the apartment was not something we would want to see. The 911 operator didn’t believe me even after I let her talk to the neighbor.

We broke the window and i climbed in. I found my precious beautiful sweet amazing loving daughter surrounded in blood. She had been strangled and stabbed in the throat.

The spot where I had been staring all day was the spot my daughter was killed at on the other side of the wall. He had killed her before we got there and she bled out in minutes.

The kind guy who called me mom was really a monster underneath it all. He has no remorse. I was in disbelief and felt a misunderstanding had happened. I went and saw him once he turned himself in two days later. He said he did it because he couldn’t live without her.

Never let your loved ones be alone when they are breaking up or going to meet someone they just broke up. Learn from the biggest mistake of my life. I’d do anything to rewind time and save my daughter.

((For the ones doubting my credibility here are some links. I wish this wasn’t my reality. I wish my daughter was alive))

11. Just be yourself.

It’s about respect, if she treats him right, and compatibility.

On the other end, not her dad, but my girlfriend’s roommate is this old grizzled marine dude. She told me that he liked me because I didn’t try to get him to like, which apparently most people do. I was just myself and acted naturally, which he appreciated. Just be yourself and the people that will like you will like you, and the people who won’t won’t. But always be respectful.

10. Well, it’s still adorable at that point no matter what.

My 4yo daughter introduced me to the 5yo neighbour kid as a bf, she told me he’s really good at running fast and he appreciates snails as much as she does. Needless to say, this is a keeper.

9. I guess you should have brought a boy home.

Not a parent, but this was my experience with my mother when I was a teen.

So, as a teen, my mother pulled me to the side and gave me the “gay talk”. You know, the “I’ll still love you even if you were gay” talk.

I asked her why she thought I was gay and she said it was because I never bring any girls to the house.

Guess what I did within the next few days? I brought a girl in the house.

Guess what my mother did? She kicked her out and gave me a lecture on how inappropriate it was to bring girls to the house.

Yes, it makes no sense.

8. So you’re saying she was right.

My mother-in-law assumed I was some sort of player when I first met her before my first date with my wife. Even told my wife that she assumed I went on lots of dates back at school.

Joke’s on her. I spent the entirety of my freshman year (year before I met my wife) enjoying the sweet, sweet internet speed of my dorm room and playing the shit out of Halo 3, Mass Effect 1 & 2, picking up drunk dorm-mates from house parties at 3am, and going on exactly 0 dates.

After years of getting to know my MIL, she just didn’t want her daughter to get into a long-distance relationship, then end up moving out of state with me if we got married and I was still there (which ended up happening. Whoops).

7. Parents just know.

I have always instinctively known within seconds of meeting them. I’ve liked all but one of my son’s partners, and the one I didn’t feel right about was the one who screwed him up.

6. Sisters, too.

Not a mother but I’m a sister to a lovely brother. He had brought some girls in house in his teenage years, and instantly I would know if I liked them or not. The first one he brought, was super rude with me and my parents. She would eat alone in the bedroom when we are having dinner, force my brother to be mean to me, etc. Few months after the relationship ended in a really bad way. After that brought some girls, didn’t talk so much with them but they were nice and sweet (didn’t last long, less than two months). The last one he brought, when I talked to her, just one thought came to mind “she’s the one”. Five or six years later, here they are, living together.

Edit: typos

5. Seems simple enough.

Met my daughters boyfriend the other day. First boyfriend. She’s 17. He’s 18. I must admit I was a bit nervous and I remember very well being 18 and what I was thinking/wanting, but had a word with my self to be welcoming and warm and to treat him as an equal, my daughters friend and therefor my friend. Anyway he’s a nice young man so it’s all good. But I to answer your question I guess if he’s nice I’ll like him if he’s a dick i wont.

Either way as far as my daughter is concerned I’ll like him.

4. And you know he understands homework.

When they interact and help out the rest of the family. When my daughter didn’t understand her homework and then her sisters boyfriend helped her it showed how much he actually cared.

3. You can always kick them out later.

My mother has always been accepting of everyone I’ve ever dated, but realistic about their faults. My family immediately welcomes them with open arms, but just warns me if they seem “off” for whatever reason. I think it’s a decent system.

2. From the other side of the lens…

I’m not a parent but my gf’s father hates me for some reason, it’s been 1 1/2 years already, it’s gotten better since then tho but still

Edit: Thanks everyone for your comments and support, I see that a lot of people are going through a similar situation, I know it will get better! If anything when we can finally live together on our own…

1. Don’t give me a reason not to.

Not a parent so I called my mom. She stated and I quote:

“I like all of them until they give me reason not to. Then I never tell you whether I like them or not, so I don’t influence your own judgement. I cannot choose for you, although sometimes I wish I could.”

-Mrs. UnappreciatedSon

Edit: spacing

Edit 2: yes I’m aware that my mother appreciates me as many pointed out lol. It’s not her that’s the concern. But I appreciate you guys sticking up for my mom, even when it’s not directed to her. Thank you guys for pointing it out, hopefully this fixes it.

Edit 3: your*

I can’t say I’m looking forward to this stage of life, but it’s headed my way, regardless!

People Share What Happened When They Asked out Their Crushes

Did you ever ask out a crush who you admired from afar? I did once in 7th grade. I psyched myself up and worked up to it and then…I got rejected.

But that’s how it goes sometimes. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

AskReddit users who went through with asking out their crushes reveal what happened afterward.

1. Well, that’s awkward…

“She thought I was joking. We’re still friends, but it was pretty awkward.”

2. Nice work!

“I told her I loved her on the first date. She said “what?” I said it again IN CASE SHE DIDNT BLOODY HEAR IT THE FIRST TIME.

Few years later we’re still together.

So far it’s the best decision I’ve ever made.”

3. Not a great outcome.

“He screamed “no” and ran away.

This was in the fifth grade.”

4. That was a date?

“She said yes. Asked her out on a second date, specifically said the word date this time. She said she didn’t know we were going out on dates. Oh well…”

5. Now you know.

“We went out on a date and I learned she was not the one for me after all. But it was a good lesson and had I not asked her out I’d just agonized over what might’ve been.”

6. Rejection is never easy.

“Haha I got rejected and now it’s awkward sometimes.”

7. A happy ending!

“She punched me in the arm and said “fuck yeah.” Then we went on the most awkward nerd date because we just wanted to like each other. It was a good nerd date. We are still dating to this day.”

8. Good luck!

“Asked mine out today, have a date on Friday.”

9. Just go for it!

“She’s sitting next me in our apartment playing Minecraft. Never thought she’d actually be interested in me. I guess I was selling myself short.

Do it. Could be the best thing you ever do.”

10. Good times…

“She said yes and we went out to dinner and saw a movie together. Dropping her off, we kissed on her parents front porch for what seemed like forever. Her dad thought so too because he started flicking the porch lights on and off. Good times.”

11. Mutual interests definitely help.

“I sat next to her in the university cafeteria – it was really, really awkward, then one of her friends came by and made it more so. Turns out we were both really shy, but had a mutual interest in geekery like sci-fi.

We’ve been married 15 years now.”

12. Still got that number.

“He was the head chef where I worked and I was new in town. We always sat in the same booth during our breaks and got to know each other over the course of a month and found out we had a lot in common. One night before I left I wrote my number down to give it to him and to ask him out. We asked each other “do you wanna hang out?” at the same time and then blushed.

Our first date was at a rooftop bar celebrating a coworkers birthday. He asked me if he could kiss me, that’s when I knew he was the one.

Now, years later, we have a beautiful baby boy that we love more than each other. He still has my phone number in his wallet.”

13. Congrats!

“We’re getting married on Saturday.”

14. Hmmmmm…

“He said he wasn’t looking for a girlfriend but he was interested if it was sex only. I politely declined.”

15. That’s a heartbreaker.

“3rd grade.

He showed everyone the gift I made him and everyone laughed at me for weeks.

I thought it was a nice gift, made it myself. Apparently not.”

People Share the Life Mysteries They Wish They Could Get Answered

Life is full of mysteries. I’m talking about all kinds of things that we really wish we had the answers to.

They could be big, they could be small. They might have something to do with how the universe works, or they might be specific only to you.

AskReddit users revealed what mysteries and questions they want to know…

1. You’re not alone on this one.

“What’s in the Vatican’s secret library?”

2. Maybe a ghost?

“What the hell happened to make my dog terrified of the bed for 3 days last year.”

3. Outer space…

“I would love to know if we have in some form been contacted. Maybe some higher forces know and didn’t tell us or it just went right by us because we were unable to receive the message due to technology. I think there’s a pretty decent possibility that that has happened.”

4. I’d like to know this one, too.

“Who was the Zodiac Killer and what was his complete story.”

5. That’s a real conundrum.

“What kind of job I could actually get and enjoy and still be able to live my life comfortably. Seems to be the impossible question.”

6. Definitely a weird story.

“What happened to Malaysia Airlines Flight 370?”

7. Is anybody out there?

“If there is other intelligent life out there somewhere. I know that we probably will never see another intelligent life form, but it would be nice to know. It is neato some of the radio telescope stuff they are able to do now and look for atmosphere contaminants that could signal intelligent life. Would likely be the best we can do.”

8. Who did it?

“Who killed Jon Benet Ramsey? Also Madeline McCann. I really don’t think those cases will ever be solved and it drives me crazy.”

9. The real story.

“I’d like to have a true and factual account of the life and death of Jesus of Nazareth.”

10. Before and after.

“What existed before our universe exploded into existence and how is it going to end??”

11. A true crime mystery.

“Who was Jack the Ripper?”

12. One of the big questions.

“What actually happens after you die?”

13. That’s heavy.

“If there was anything I could have done to save my daughter from being murdered by her ex-boyfriend.”

14. An interesting question.

“How many times has humanity been reset by disaster.”

15. Looking for a partner.

“Who is out there that would be a good husband and want me as much as I want them. I’d move anywhere and change my job and life circumstances to find a partner.”

15 People Share Times When They Died Inside

All of us have had those moments in life when we were so embarrassed or humiliated that a little part of us died. A lot of them come in our younger years when we try to ask out the popular girl or guy or act cool in front of our peers. Or, sometimes, incredibly terrible or sad things take place that leave a mark on us forever.

Folks on AskReddit shared their experiences, and I think you’re gonna cringe while reading about these experiences.

1. They sure are cruel.

“In the 7th grade, I got my back to school clothes. For some reason, I thought yellow pants and a yellow Hawaiian shirt looked AWESOME . I was excited to wear this new outfit. We were not wealthy, so having new clothes like this was a big deal for me.

Sitting in my English class I received a note. It said “Are you the mustard man?” and was signed by every.person.in.the.fucking.class and as I read it, they all burst out in laughter. All of them.

Its a moment in life where you have to laugh or cry and either way you die inside.

I chose to laugh.

Kids are cruel.”

2. Yes, I do mind.

“When I was 18 and at a carnival with a group of people I knew from school, including my long-time crush. At some point, people started dropping off from the group, going on rides, getting food, that kind of stuff. Eventually, it was only me, my crush and my little sister (little as in almost 16). I kept waiting for her to leave, too, to go find some of her friends or whatever.

After hanging out together for another 15 or so minutes, it slowly dawned on me that it wasn’t him and me waiting for her to leave, but them waiting for me to leave. They shortly after became a couple for a few months.

It later turned out that they got to know each other at my 18th birthday party two months prior (they never met before). When my sister got back later that evening she told me that and said “you don’t mind, do you?”.

I did mind, very much.”

3. This is terrible.

“I received a set of boxes in the mail with no return address on a Monday morning. When I opened the boxes I started noticing stuff that is my mom’s (her handwriting on notes) this seems to be some sort of care package from my mom! (Was in college at the time).

As I opened more, there were all these documents? I was confused, then I found the note. My mom committed suicide but planned it all out. She sent me a list of “things to take care of now that she’s gone”. Now I hate getting packages.”

4. That’s very sad.

“When my dad told me he was obligated to love me, but he didnt have to like me.

I was 10. And I was absolutely crushed.”

5. Pretty embarrassing.

“I had a customer who was holding and examining an awkward, fragile, and expensive item with one hand… I asked her to please hold it with two.

She turned to look at me. She only had one arm.”

6. It was not quiet.

“When I was about 9 I was in a school assembly (all 400~ students and all teachers). At our school assembly’s the students sat cross legged on wooden floor in the sports hall.

Well, I had to fart, and I assumed it would be quiet. It was not. It ended up being extremely loud and was amplified by the wooden floor.”

7. I wonder why…

“At a company event. As we left, my colleagues were nowhere to be found as I walked outside. So I waited there. Turns out they were taking a group photo without me.”

8. A strange birthmark.

“Interviewing a potential student who is interested in my school, he has a huge green circle around his eye.

“Wow, quite a black eye! what’d you do?”

“I was born like this.””

9. A big joke.

“As a neurotic and anxious middle schooler, I decided to ask a girl to a dance, but through AIM (shoutout to the late 2000’s). She said yes and the majority of the class ended up finding out. I thought everything was alright until I got a phone call from somebody else telling me that it was all just a joke.”

10. A nice guy stepped in.

“6th grade all day field trip to Sea world Orlando. Surprise period through my WHITE shorts. All the moms who wanted to help only had tampons, I was 11 and had no idea how to use them, there ensued an embarrassing crash course. I was devastated until random dad saved the day by giving me his windbreaker to tie around my waste and told me to, ” go have fun”

Thanks random field trip dad, you saved the day!”

11. Reality check.

“When my friends said I should drink some more because I’m no fun without alcohol…”

12. Do you speak French?

“I went to an interview once where one of the two people interviewing me asked if I knew French. I said I knew core French so they decided to conduct the interview completely in French…

I can understand when someone speaks French to me, I can read and write fluently in French, but I cant for the life of me speak French. It was so bad that one of the interviewers got up and left halfway through and didn’t come back.

Needless to say I didn’t get the job.”

13. Whoopsie daisy.

“That time I left school while chatting to friends and spotted my mum’s car, got in said car and uttered the usual “thanks for picking me up mum” only to realise that it was not in fact my mum’s car , but a complete stranger and their family.”

14. Always take a second look.

“Setting: junior high. Status: awkward preteen. Style: liked cats, very shy. Walked out of the school bathroom. Noticed after a bit that the popular girl in school was watching me, giving me a strange look. She then approached me, and wordlessly pulled my skirt out of my underwear that I’d just tidily tucked in with the rest of my uniform. Then just walked away to avoid my shame, as I’d just been walking around with my panties showing…”

15. People suck.

“I was 15, someone was taking a photo of my girlfriend at the time and I and she goes “make sure you don’t smile, you’re ugly when you smile you look much better when you’re serious, don’t want you ruining another photo”.

It was not a joke.

That killed me so hard I’m 34 and I still struggle to smile in front of people.”

15 People Share How They Got Their Scars

I have a couple of memorable scars on my body. One is from when a kid on the school bus in 8th grade (he shall remain nameless) cut me on the hand with his homemade wooden knife. Another is from getting burned by a piece of plastic that melted onto my right-hand ring finger. That was about 25 years ago, and it still looks fresh! (PS: we were really smart kids).

AskReddit users tell us the stories behind the scars on their bodies.

How did you get your scars? Share your stories in the comments.

1. A black eye for Christmas.

“I have a scar on my eyebrow from when I was an asshole 4 year old. I threw a tantrum and tried to pick up a small plastic kids table to throw it over my head. Instead I dropped it, the leg hit me with a sharp broken edge on the eyebrow/eye, I started bleeding, and I had a black eye for Christmas.”

2. X marks the spot.

“I was making a paper plate mask in grade 3 and stuck a pair of scissors through the plate for eyes… Right into my other hand.”

3. Hockey scars for life.

“I have like 5 or 6 deep ones in both eye brows from hockey and hair doesn’t grow there very well so they look all weird.”

4. Didn’t work out so well.

“I was four. I was bouncing on a beachball. My mom told me to go upstairs to bed, so I thought I could bounce up the stairs on the beach ball. I missed the first step and got stitches in my forehead. That’s kid logic for ya.”

5. Very unsightly.

“When I was 15 I had keyhole surgery for appendicitis. Three barely noticeable scars, one of which is in my belly button. Unfortunately, something was left inside me and the morning after being discharged I woke with a fist-sized cyst on my abdomen.

I had gone septic and had to have whatever was left inside of me removed via non-keyhole surgery which left me with a neat straight line scar about 12cm long. Also had to have a drain into my lower abdomen so I’ve got a big ol’ hole about 6cm below my belly button. Unsightly as hell.”

6. Cat scratch fever.

“I have a pretty noticeable scar on the right side of my neck that often gets mistaken for a really bad hickey. The story I tell everyone because I’m sick of explaining is that I was stabbed in the neck with a knife. The real story is that when I was 5, I had been scratched in my eye from one of our house cats while I was asleep. The scratch had infected lymph nodes in my neck, causing it to become extremely swollen, where it was difficult for me to even breathe.

Doctors were baffled by what it was, where I spent several weeks/months in and out of the hospital. They speculated it was lymphoma at the time. I had my neck drained from the fluid from massive syringes that I still have nightmares over, and also have a paralyzing fear of needles. The scar ultimately came from me undergoing 3 separate surgeries where they removed infected lymph nodes from my neck, and late discovered I suffered from a very severe case of cat scratch fever. Yes it’s a Ted Nugent song, and yes it also my anthem.”

7. That’s a bummer.

“Got shingles on my face as a teenager. Do not recommend. The bonus though is that the scar kind of looks like a love heart.”

8. Probably not a great idea.

“Catching a peacock. They have sharp talons.”

9. Boys will be boys.

“My brother and I were playing WWF in the house (even though we weren’t supposed to!). He grabbed the back of my head and slammed my forehead into the “turn buckle” which was the wooden corner of the arm rest on our couch. Blood started running down my face, he ran and hid under his bed. I got 7 stitches in my right eyebrow.”

10. What’s next for you?

“I have what I lovingly refer to as “Jesus Scars”.

When I was 13, I was trying to pry something apart with a chisel and stabbed myself in the right hand by accident.

When I was 23, I was using my box cutter at work to separate some boxes and cut my left hand in almost the exact same place.

Cant wait to see what stupid thing I do at 33.”

11. A whole list of them.

“Needle piercing my cheek during mother’s labor

Forceps tore the ish outta my face

Flint rock on my bare foot at 3, many stitches

Face smash, concrete

chicken pox

lawn mower muffler

angry rabbit”

12. Lucky to be here.

“I have a big scar down the center of my chest, and 2 little “star scars” right under it.

I had just turned 3 and I was at my grandparents’ house with my family. My older cousin was spinning me around in a swivel chair. I fell off of the chair and landed on my side, on top of my grandmother’s knitting stuff that was sitting in a basket by the chair. A knitting needle went through my side and pierced my heart. My aunt thought the needle was just caught in my shirt, and ripped it out of me. I went unconscious almost immediately.

By time I got to the hospital, I had lost a lot of blood and the doctors basically told my parents to prepare for the worst. Luckily, there was a badass heart surgeon there that performed emergency open heart surgery and saved my life! The star scars are from feeding tubes that were hooked up to me post surgery.

Very thankful!!”

13. Quite a story.

“Two scars on my left arm:

On my wrist from a bicycle wreck

On my bicep from when my arm was blown open by a homemade pipe bomb.

I was working a sketchy, under the table semi truck washing job. This job is typically done on a weekend when the trucks are home, usually on an unsupervised lot or farm.

A person we worked with, Person A, loved pranks. Their favorite, was to stuff some Piccolo Pete fireworks into a plastic 2 liter bottle and toss it at someone. Being plastic, the bottle would melt, and just make a super loud bang, scaring the shit out of someone.

Well, Person A had someone working him him, Person B. Person B also loved pranks, and tried to mimic Person A’s prank, but with PVC pipe instead of a plastic bottle. r/whatcouldgowrong

Person A tossed it my way. How neither of them knew PVC pipe would frag out instead of melt, is beyond me. So I’m washing this truck wheel, when out of nowhere, I get flashbanged Call of Duty style. Loud bang, vision went white, and all I could hear was ringing. I remember screaming “what the fuck”, but not because I heard myself say it; because I felt my vocal chords vibrating so hard.

Anyways, I come to, and my arm is just red. Completely red. I try to spray it off, but my boss is sheared and spewing water everywhere. My buddy nearby was also coming to, and saw what happened, so now we’re both in panic mode. I end up getting rinsed off, and I can see into the muscle of my arm. We get a towel wrapped around it, and get me to the hospital.

The wound itself was somewhat of a lightning bolt shape (Like Harry Potter’s scar, or the Metroid logo). So the doctor had to cut out the jagged inside to create a clean hole to stitch up. Fucking gnarly. 8 stitches. Being a stupid 19 year old with no money or understanding of how a lawsuit would work, I didn’t want to make a huge deal out of it and told Person A, you either pay for all of this and we leave it at that, it I sue the shit out of you. They paid all my medical expenses, and we left it at that.

And 6 years later, the story lives on through Reddit.”

14. Avoid the grill.

“I backed my arm up against a barbecue grill when I was younger. I was the perfect height to get my entire upper arm. Elbow up to shoulder. I still have noticeable scars 20 odd years later.”

15. This is interesting.

“Ben Carson looked at my brain.

Had craniosynostosis when I was born and he went in to put some bolts in my head. 152 stitches across the top of my head.

His politics are whack but dude saved my life.”
