People Share Their Favorite Meals That Take Less Than 5 Minutes to Make

I have two meals that I can make in a jiffy when I’m short on time.

One is a black bean and cheese quesadilla with a little dollop of sour cream on the side. And the other is a can of tuna fish with mayo, Crystal hot sauce, and a diced hard-boiled egg all mixed in.

Boom! Feel free to use those, brothers and sisters.

AskReddit users shared their favorite quick and easy meals.

Hopefully you’ll get some good ideas!

1. Boom!

“Oatmeal with a nut butter mixed in while it’s still hot .

Add fruit/crushed nuts too!

Good s**t.”

2. From Grandma.

“A very simple recipe my grandma prepared for me when I was a kid.

It’s basically scrambled eggs…but before adding the egg she would cook sweetcorn (from a can) with a little bit of butter, add the eggs and then when the eggs were almost ready, add small cubes of cheese and cook for a minute or until the cheese start to melt(she was using fontal, but any swiss or white cheddar will do). Just a little black pepper and salt.

Takes 5 minutes to do but it’s absolutely delicious, fill you up, not so unhealthy and I feel my late grandma with me.

I tried variations with chives or spring onions, paprika or other stuff. Still good but nothing as good as a simple “uova strapazzate con mais e formaggio”.”

3. Gotta love it.

“Naan bread and a tub of hummus.

Hummus is such an underrated food. It goes well with a lot of veggies and breads and chips or heck even cheese.

All the time I hear hummus being listed as one of those weird, gross foods when its actually an amazing snack, or a meal if done correctly.

It’s not really unhealthy, either, especially if eaten with veggies (celery and carrots go great with hummus).”

4. Yum!

“Tomato soup and add tortellini.

I like the spinach ones from Trader Joe’s and progreso creamy tomato with basil.

It really makes a decent meal.”

5. I might try this…

“Microwave dumpling soup.

Pick a broth, add (insert Asian dumpling here; mandu are good, but gyoza or wonton work too), add a fistful of fresh greens (spinach, arugula, cabbage, literally whatever you have on hand). Add hot sauce if you want it, a splash of soy if you have it, whatever you like in your broth.

Microwave three minutes; beat an egg while you do. Remove the soup from the microwave and drizzle in the egg very slowly. Congrats, you’ve hit most major dietary requirements and made a satisfying meal that’s as filling as you want it to be.

Peak tier for me is beef broth, a splash of dashi, a splash of soy sauce, a splash of mirin, a big spoon of sambal olek, about four or five mid-sized Chinese beef and vegetable dumplings, a fistful of baby spinach, and an egg.

Sometimes you have to microwave again for a minute if the egg ribbons don’t set.”

6. It’ll last!

“I like to buy a rotisserie chicken and use it for a lot of things…I probably make Quesadillas 2-3 times a week. A little roast chicken and salsa to your cheese quesadilla and you have a real meal in the same amount of time.

The trick is to use butter in the pan and to cook it on medium-low until the insides get melty, and then raise the heat to medium and get your desired tortilla crispness.”

7. I love these!

“Butter slice of toast

Rip circle shaped hole in middle of toast

Put toast in frying pan

Crack egg and put in the hole

Flip it after a bit

Eat “birds in the nest”.”

8. An old classic.

“Grilled cheese and tomato soup. Put tomato soup can in pot on low.

Add in equal amount of milk to soup(1 can of soup= 1 soup can of milk).

Cook grilled cheese as desired and enjoy!”

9. Sounds exotic!

“Ramen, picante beef hopefully, and several big drops of sesame oil.

Save some of the noodles w/o cooking them and sprinkle them on top.”

10. Something to think about.

“The high protein campbells soups with some buttered toast is a great hot meal ready in 3 min though.

Or oatmeal made with milk and peanut butter.

OR, budget allowing, cottage cheese/yogurt with fruit and toppings, yum.”

11. Do it!

“Tuna melt.

I once read a food critic saying that professional chefs all think that tuna and cheese should never ever go together but if you sit in a diner late at night when all the chefs have long finished service and had a few drinks, they’re all eating tuna melts.

It’s the ultimate sandwich for me.”

12. Late night delight.

“San Choy Bao

Get some pork mince (or beef) crumble it into a hot wok with either vegetable oil or sesame oil and let it stir fry.

Meanwhile chop a red onion, a chili and some peanuts if you have them add them to the wok and continue to cook, mix in some soy sauce or oyster sauce or hosin sauce, whatever you have.

And then eat in lettuce leafs

It might take more than 5 minutes, but won’t take more than 6-7 minutes and its a bloody good meal, you want it to be fairly crunchy so dont need to worry too much about cooking out the onion and pork mince cooks very quickly.

Its my go too meal if i get back late from work.”

13. Pile it on.

“3 bread slice club sandwich.

It makes me so happy.

I do salami, Turkey, ham 2 slices of cheddar cheese, mayo on all 3 slices, shredded lettuce and pepper.”

14. You don’t even need a plate!

“Sharp cheddar in a sourdough sandwich, microwaved to warm the bread and just start the cheese melting.

Eaten over the sink. Why waste a plate?”

15. Ramen and egg.

“Ramen and an egg, but not the traditional way.

Boil roughly half an inch of water (we want just enough water to boil the noodles, with very little water left over when it’s done boiling)

Smash up the ramen noodles, while still in the package (optional but cooks MUCH faster)

Open the package and remove the seasoning

Dump the noodles in

While boiling, crack an egg and whisk in a small bowl

Noodles should be done and almost all the water should be gone, if not strain out some.

Remove from the heat.

Slowly pour in the egg while mixing very quickly, try not to let the egg touch the pan.

Mix as much of the seasoning packet as you like (I prefer 1/2 – 3/4 because I usually add a salty component at the end.)

Add to bowl and top with some chives, thinly sliced, ripped up ham/salami and/or parsley. Leftover bacon or pancetta are fantastic crunchy components to dial up the texture.”

What Social Trend Annoys You the Most? People Spoke Up.

I really do enjoy some things about social media, BUT there’s no denying that there are some really annoying aspects about it.

Like influencers.

And people dancing in their kitchens for no reason.

And there are a whole bunch of other ones I can’t think I’m right now because I’m starting to get upset…

AskReddit users discussed the modern social trends that really annoy them.

Let’s see what they had to say.

1. Ugh.

“Family vloggers horrify me. The concept of exploiting your children’s lives for views is particularly awful.

And because it’s a relatively new concept there are no real laws around child labor or exploitation concerning it. There are youtubers out there right now who live in mansions worth millions of dollars that they got from shoving a camera in their toddler’s face and demanding them to perform for strangers.

I can’t even imagine the psychological repercussions this will have on these kids in the future.”

2. It’s true.

“Everyone has a right to have a voice on the internet but not everyone deserves a following / authority / influence.

Just because you paid off your car doesn’t mean you’re qualified to become a financial coach.”

3. Can I just buy this thing?

“You can’t just buy something now. Everything is a subscription.

First it was just Netflix, then it was dollar shave club. Now every TV channel is a separate subscription, every household item wants to send it to you over and over again. Nothing is released physically, so the only way to watch a movie or check out a new album is to pay someone monthly.

Services that were offered for free or one-time purchase are rescinded and now offered as subscriptions. It’s so obvious that everyone and everything just wants to milk you as long and for as much as possible. And people just buy into it willingly. I know people who spend like $200 a month on s**t that was free like, 10 years ago.

People are even offering themselves on a subscription base now. I can’t believe how cool everyone is with watching all their money disappear all the time.”

4. No privacy.

“In general, just the fact that people aren’t allowed to be private anymore.

All your devices hook up to the Internet. Your smartphone tracks you in God only knows how many different ways. Every business wants you to sign up for a rewards account, so they can harvest your contact details. Hell, even my PC and game consoles will rearrange my desktop just to show me advertisements.

And if that wasn’t enough, people give you strange looks when you tell them you have almost no social media presence: no Twitter, no Instagram, no Snapchat, no Facebook. Not to mention how people just get this confused look on their face whenever I get mad at them because they took a photo/video of me without my knowledge or consent and put it on their social media.

Honestly, it shocks me to see how little people care that privacy is disappearing.”

5. The answer is NO.

“Entitled social media influencers who contact businesses and practically demand free goods or services in exchange for exposure.”

6. Ugh.

“The “I’m going to disrespect my way to the top of the world” thing that Jake Paul is doing.”

7. Don’t answer that.

“Spontaneous facetime calls. I’m in my god**mn undies. Stop shoving cameras in my face.

And by that I actually mean when someone else nearby starts a facetime and assumes you want to be part of it.”

8. They’re not gods.

“Glorifying celebrities and treating them like gods.

I understand being a fan of someone, but you don’t have to create an entire livelihood around them or try to emulate them.

This is also how people get into positions of power when they shouldn’t be.”

9. I’m a great person!

“People recording themselves doing “charitable acts” like buying a meal or giving money to a homeless person.

I can assure you that person does NOT want their face all over social media so you can get clout for being a “good charitable person”.

Sure do a good thing like helping the less fortunate but you don’t need to record it and have their face all over social media.”

10. Not cool.

“Over-the-top pranks that involve staged violence or scaring passersby.

Seems like a surefire way to traumatize someone.

I have PTSD and it’s not fun.”

11. Too much work.

“Everyone on the internet requesting me to create an account with an email and password just to access a page.

No, Donny’s Discount Lawn Furniture, i don’t want to be part of your mailing list, or subscribe to your instagram or whatever else.

I just wanna check the price of a chair, and GTFO.”

12. Put the phone down.

“Driving while on a cell phone.

Driving has always been a little frustrating but now it’s gotten insane. My girlfriend and I can call out with at least 90% accuracy who is on their phone.

Abrupt Lane changes, 20mph under the speed limit, swerving, looking at phone and missing a green light for 5+ seconds, and – my personal pet peeve – stopping 50’ short of a light in a busy intersection during rush hour.

Not only is the use common, but the entitlement that comes with it is across the board. Someone waiting at a green light 5+ seconds, I do a short honk to alert them – they give me middle finger. Like, yeah, I’m the f**king idiot here (I can see you playing on your phone through your back windshield).

The other day I had a girl pull across two rows of parked cars in a lot and had to slam on my brakes to not smash into her. Instead of saying sorry, she got out of the car (still in the middle of the lane) while still on FaceTime to film me.

Like… it’s gotten so bad that I don’t see any real solution other than videoing all of these people/license plates and sending them to the local police.”

This Person Got Revenge When Their Boss Demanded They Work Overtime for Free

You want me to do what, boss?

For free?!?!

In case you haven’t been paying attention, some employers out there like to do everything they can to take advantage of their workers.

And that includes asking them to work overtime for no pay.

Let’s see what happened in this story from Reddit.

You demand we work overtime for free? Enjoy trying to open the store with no employees.

“I’ve met Grumpy in Narcotics Anonymous. He volunteered there after they helped him and became my sponsor.

Seeing that I was trying to get my s**t together, he offered me my first job out of high school. Grumpy was the manager of a store for a company that sold everything you needed to build a house. From cement and bricks, to custom made cupboards. I started as a “loader”, filling the trucks that were making deliveries.

A little background for the company (it plays an important for later). When they started, back in the early 1980s, they sold everything you needed to build a brick and mortar home wholesale to professionals.

During their first expansion, they got a really good reputation for their prices of power tools, custom cupboards and landscaping (including custom made garden furnitures). The stores were basically big warehouses. In mid ’90s, they opened their doors to the general public, which accompanied by a rising tent of DIY, skyrocketed their sales.

That brought a second, smaller wave of expansion and the opening of the online store (first only with phone orders and later with a proper site). When I joined, they were doing a third shift on their business plan.

They had cut down on things that weren’t a big seller (like bricks and concrete) and were focusing more on the big sellers (custom made furniture, landscaping, tools and, for some weird reason, plumbing).

My first 8 months on the job was a dream. Grumpy was an excellent manager. Having started in the company roughly the same age I was and being promoted through the ranks, had developed a very distinct managerial style. His concept was simple: “if my employees are happy, they work better and provide better services, which leads to better sales”.

That meant that while Grumpy managed one of the inner city stores, meaning medium to small size compared to others, we were fourth in revenue nationwide and first in customer happiness.

And then the reason for his nickname stroke. While everyone called him Grumpy (a nickname he was kind of proud of), he was far from it. The reason was he had a medical condition that affected his nerves and had left him with a permanent frown on his face.

He had declined promotion due to that condition (knowing the extra stress would make his condition flair up, meaning he wouldn’t be as effective as he would like). His medical condition flaired up unexpectedly and Grumpy had to be hospitalized and be on sick leave for a time. HQ decided to not have one of Grumpy’s assistants be an Acting Manager for the duration, but bring in a regional manager to take over the store for the duration. Let’s call him Wilhelm.

Wilhelm was the exact opposite of Grumpy. He was younger than Grumpy (he was in his late 20s, Grumpy was in his late 30s), had a business degree and he hadn’t worked the floor at all.

He was hired from the beginning as an office drone and climbed his way to regional manager. The reason he was put in charge of our store had to do with the change of the business plan of the company.

You see, the change of focus had created a lot of empty space in the stores. A supermarket chain had approached the company with an offer to rent the empty space, especially for inner city stores.

The company had accepted and placed regional managers in key stores to help with integration. The thing is, the supermarket chain had a reputation of being bad employers. That was reinforced by one of our tellers, who had worked for them for three years before quitting to join us.

Wilhelm didn’t help also. His managerial style was based in only one concept: make more money in any way possible. He started by changing our schedule from monthly to weekly, raising the sales targets to unrealistic heights and always demanded more. In the first two weeks, six experienced people had left (four quitted and two fired) and replaced by young, inexperienced people that were easier to manipulate.

And then, the integration happened. The floor was the first to feel the problem. The supermarket opened its doors and was understaffed. Wilhelm started sending people over to “help” for four to six hours, while also demanding to work their regular shifts. If someone declined, he/she was written up. Two write ups in six months and you were fired.

Then Wilhelm came to “lay the law” in the loading bay. The loading bay was shared between the two stores. Wilhelm declared that we had first help the two guys of the supermarket unload their trucks first, because their products were “perishable”, and then started loading our own trucks.

That would throw our delivery schedule to the wind. The loading crew worked 05:00 to 13:00. We loaded first the trucks that had longer to travel, so they will be ready to leave at 07:00 at the latest (the company had a next day delivery policy for a 150 miles radius).

What Wilhelm declared meant we couldn’t start loading our trucks before 07:30 and they couldn’t start their route before 09:30. We said as much, but Wilhelm didn’t care. He said we had to do both jobs. When someone inquired about overtime, Wilhelm said no. He said we already made too much money with unsocial hours (05:00 to 08:00) and leaving “early”, so he wouldn’t approve overtime.

So, from a nice environment that you wanted to work for, we all started getting miserable. We lost ten people in the loading crew in a month because of the new rules. The new hires didn’t last long.

The floor was a mess also, started turning personnel faster than a dollar hooker. Anyone who is staying is either looking for another job, is afraid of unemployment or is too young to know better. The sales had a very small decline, but customer happiness is plummeting fast.

After almost six months, all the “Old Guard” that was left, was ready to quit. But our “savior” came back. Almost six months from the day he was hospitalized, Grumpy walks in the store to claim his rightful position.

He isn’t a knight in shining armor, riding a pure white horse, carrying a legendary sword. He is in a normal attire, slightly limping and holding a cane. We have a “welcome back” party and have a small glimmer of hope now he is back. We are informed that Grumpy will be on light duties for two weeks, before he becomes the manager again.

Despite Grumpy being back, Wilhelm still remains the regional manager, which means he outranks Grumpy and makes it very clear in private meetings with all of us. If he caught as complaining to Grumpy, we were as good as gone. Still, a few of us are planning to have a meeting with Grumpy after the weeks (letting him get his “sea legs” back). But another department had other ideas.

During his “Reign of Terror”, the only department that Wilhelm couldn’t control was the workshop. He knew that if he treated them as bad as he did to us, they would quit and the sales would go from a small decline to bottom of the barrel real quick (as I said, custom made furniture was the number one seller).

So, the head carpenter has a meeting with Grumpy on his second day talking about “the future of the workshop”. In reality, the guy spilled the beans on Wilhelm.

With the pretext of “catching up” with the changes, Grumpy has meetings with everyone, learning what Wilhelm had done and why we had so many new staff. You could feel he was getting angrier with every meeting. He had also had an eye opening meeting with the manager of the supermarket. Finally, the time had come that he is the manager again.

The Revenge

On his first day back as a manager, Grumpy notifies everyone of a mandatory meeting after the store is closed. He has a solution. So gather in the store after closing hours. And Grumpy lays out the plan.

For the next couple of days, nobody except him is coming to the store. If anyone calls us, we should direct them to him. Which we did, when we started getting calls about the store being closed.

Grumpy’s answer to the HQ was simple: the staff was working on a second job during their shifts, which is a breach of contract, so I had to fire them all and find new staff.

That caught HQ’s attention, because nothing of the sort was reported in the past six months. They asked Grumpy for evidence, which he happily provided with our written testimonies. Which brought a s**tstorm on Wilhelm.

You see, Wilhelm had an “arrangement” with the supermarket manager. He got a kickback from our unpaid labor for the supermarket and the manager offered the same thing to Grumpy. He also included that Wilhelm regularly declined to sign overtime, which meant that if any one of us went to the Labor Department, the company would get a really huge fine.

The Aftermath

Wilhelm quickly got fired. We all received calls to “interview” with the company for an open position. We all received severance pay for our “firing” plus most of the unpaid overtime (about 80% of it). Almost all of us went back to work with a small pay raise based on experience.

The company took a long, hard look on the supermarket chain and distanced themselves from them (they stayed until their lease was over, but no shared employees anymore and a lot of theirs jumped ship to our side). Next time Grumpy had to take time off, one of his assistants took over.

Two did a stellar job, leading to be promoted to managers in other stores. Grumpy brought back his usual managerial style, leading again to a rise of sales and customer happiness.

I left the job three years later for a better paying position, but I still remember Grumpy as one of the best managers I ever had.”

Now it’s time to see how folks on Reddit responded to this story.

This reader said it should be obvious to all employers that happy workers are better workers.

No doubt about it!

This reader said just because you have a business degree, it doesn’t mean you’re going to know how to work with folks…or to manage them.

Another person said the old adage that “anyone can be replaced” is outdated and backward. And it hurts companies in the long run.

And finally, this Reddit user said that, unfortunately, as long as sales are good, bad behavior in the workplace usually doesn’t go unpunished.

Have you ever been down on yourself and out of the blue you saw a quote that made you snap out of your funk? And, on top of that, it stuck with you?

I love those kinds of moments!

And we all have the quotes that remain implanted in our brains forever.

AskReddit users talked about the quotes that changed the way they look at things.

Let’s take a look.

1. Always stay young.

“”When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

He’s right.”

12. Still remember it.

13. Always changing.

“No man ever steps in the same river twice.

For it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.”

14. From a survivor.

I have young kids, and this made me think about how they won’t be this age forever.”

21. Absolutely.

22. Can’t hold on to it.

“”Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned”

– Buddha”

23. Interesting.

““Danger is very real, but fear is a choice.”

As someone who has a lot of irrational fears and is often paranoid/anxious, this helps me separate the difference between actual danger and when I’m just allowing myself to feel fear when no real danger is present.”

24. Yes, she was.

“”Bored people are often boring.”

My grandma isn’t always a nice person, but she was right.”

That’s when I stopped feeling guilty about not visiting people I really don’t care about or doing things that are expected of me that I really don’t want to do.”

27. I like this one.

“One of my dad’s favorites: “you won’t be able to understand illogical behavior with a logical thought process.”

Over the years it’s stopped me getting quite so frustrated at the behavior of others.”

28. Travel is important.

““Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts.

Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”

Mark Twain

Truly one of my favorites.”

29. Keep moving forward!

“No matter how many times I may stumble I will rise each time a better man.

The most important step a man can take is the next one.

It’s always the next one.”

30. A genius.

“”Look again at that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives.

The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every “superstar,” every “supreme leader,” every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there-on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.”

Carl Sagan, Pale Blue Dot.”

14 People Discuss the Unsolved Mysteries They’d Like to See Solved in Their Lifetime

I’m obsessed with this kind of stuff!

And, just to be clear, I’m talking about the old TV show hosted by Robert Stack AND actual unsolved mysteries. From like, real life.

And there are so many to dig into!

What mystery would you like to see solved?

Here’s what folks on AskReddit had to say.

1. True crime mystery.

“It’s old news but I genuinely want to know who the Zodiac K**ler was.

It’s probably impossible at this point but I would love to know.”

2. Creepy.

“I was a little kid when JonBeńet Ramsey was m**dered and I’ve always wanted them to really figure out who the k**ler was.

They’re never going to figure this one out. Patsy passed away. John and Burke are never talking if they know anything.

The crime scene is too convoluted to make a definitive case. There are no more leads to follow up on”

3. Very strange.

“Shelly Miscavige. What happened to her? Is she dead?

Is she being held captive? She hasn’t been confirmed seen since 2007. Local police went to look for her because a missing persons was filed. They said they saw her and everything is fine.

However, the police were Scientologists. No one has publicly seen her that I’m aware of. Certainly no proof.”

4. Art heist.

“The theft from the Gardner Museum in Boston in 1990.

My gut tells me that paintings have been destroyed which is devastating.”

5. Hoffa.

“What actually happened to Jimmy Hoffa?

I have my own thoughts frlm my dad’s stories from working for a Mob owned construction company.

But I still want to know what happened.”

6. A really scary one.

“The Delphi m**ders.

What a f**ked up crime.

Those girls deserve justice, and their families deserve peace.”

7. From France.

“In Nantes, in France, in 2011, a whole family disappeared. The mother and the four children were found dead by gunshot wound under a concrete slab in the garden of the family house.

The father, Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès, is responsible for the m**der of his whole family (we are 99,9% sure of it). The mystery is not the motive but what happened to him.

It’s been 10 years and apart some proofs he fled away in the first few days (a picture of him at an ATM from a surveillance picture for example), no trace of him was ever found since.”

8. Down by the river.

“A 16 year old girl was found rolled up in a rug, deceased, down by the river in my county. Cops hid the truth that they were using her (a freaking kid) as a confidential informant.

Witnesses fishing down by the river that night saw two police cars stop in the location the body was found. The sheriff that was using her, investigated her d**th, tried to lay blame on her father, but the answer is still unknown.

That sheriff said it was a closed case even tho the father was never tried etc. Dirtiest cop I have ever seen and he got away with a lot of c**p. Would love to see the case investigated by an outside source and solved.”

9. Freaky!

“I want them to dig on Mars.

They only analyze rocks from the surface but I’m pretty sure that if you dig really deep, there are some dead Martian animals from 4 billion years ago when Mars had oceans and stuff.”

10. Spooky.

“The case of The Oakland County Child K**ler.

In 1976 and 1977 in Detroit’s wealthiest and safest suburbs, kids were snatched off the streets in broad daylight only to be found days later dead (after being alive that whole time!).

It was supposedly never solved, but there’s accusations of police coverups and all kinds of things”

11. Let’s go to the future.

“Cryogenic stasis.

If it were developed right now, I would say goodbye to my family/friends and hop right on in for at least 100 years.

Show me the future baby.”

12. What happened?

“William Tyrell.

I think the police know what happened, but are waiting on the final piece of evidence to finally charge someone with the crime.

I think there is a lot more involved than the story they have fed us about him being randomly abducted from the front of his home. His sister is the key to the whole thing.”

13. The children.

“Beaumont Children.

There are theories that it was Bevan Spencer Von Einem (he’d have been around the right age and general looks) but he totally denied it and his conviction was for the assault/m**der of a young boy whereas witnesses that saw “The Man” with the Beaumonts was overly interested in the elder daughter and most predators that are “into” that age range tend to have strong preferences for one gender or the other.””

14. Hometown story.

“I really want to see the disappearance of Sarm Heslop solved.

Why? Well it happened near my hometown which peaked my initial interest, and it just feels so freaking obvious that I just want it to be solved because if it’s not who I think it is I’m eating my own toes.

So basically, this woman, Sarm Heslop, a UK national lived with her US citizen bf, Ryan Bane, in some boat/catamaran off of the coats of St. John, USVI. On March 8th Ryan reports her missing, and soon searches are underway in both St. Thomas and St. John

The details:

Ryan claims they went to dinner, and both of them got back on the boat (Official)

The police say that they have no confirmation that they were both on the boat when Ryan said they were (Official)

At the time of her disappearance all of her belongings were still on the boat (Official)

He allegedly tried to point the finger at some local (black) men, and the suspicions were then directed to people on island, but that quickly fell short (Unofficial, but corroborated by many on island)

The VIPD doesn’t hold him in custody, says that they’re tracking him and knows where he is (official)

He’s out and seen publicly partying and having himself a ball (unofficial)

He also refused to help look for her/cooperate (allegedly he was being very difficult with questioning) (somewhat reported, but corroborated by Sarm’s friends and locals)

There was a nine hour delay in stating her as missing to the public and preparing a search (official)

He doesn’t allow the VIPD to check his boat, at all, despite him being a person of interest. The VIPD says they couldn’t search without a warrant and had to be turned back (Official)

Allegedly screaming was heard from their boat in the wee hours of the morning (He claims that he noticed her missing at around 2AM) (Unofficial)

He has had previous DV charges after being reported by his ex-girlfriend who states that he threw her on the ground and smashed her head into the ground during a fight (Official)

The last time I checked, he then sailed off from the territory and the FBI doesn’t know of his exact whereabouts (Official).”

This Person Wonders if They’re a Jerk for Asking Their Friend to Pay for Their Dog’s Surgery

If you happen to have pets, then you already know that vet bills can be astronomical.

And this situation involving a dog from a person on Reddit seems like it might just end a friendship.

Let’s see what went down…

WIBTA for asking my friend to pay for my dogs surgery after she almost k**led him?

“One of my good friends came to my apartment to go out together one night, let’s call her Lauren. I also have a 20 week old puppy.

Lauren is notoriously messy when visiting. She will go through her clothes, my clothes and just about everything to find an outfit to go out. However, now that I have my puppy I reminded Lauren when she first came in the apartment to please keep everything off of the ground and out of reach of my puppy.

I told her that he will chew/eat anything left on the ground, so for anything she cared about & for my puppies safety, to keep it up high.

Lauren continued to have her clothes and miscellaneous items from her bag sprawled out everywhere. So instead of reminding her after the 2nd or 3rd time, I just started putting her items in another room and closing the door for her to pick up later.

While getting ready Lauren decided to take a shower and she brought her own shaving razor. When she mentioned shaving, I told her to be careful because my puppy had tried to get ahold of my razor before, so be careful.

Long story short, I crate my dog and we go out. I come back and he is having bloody diarrhea and squealing. At 4 AM, I rush to the emergency vet. They tell me he’s probably constipated and to monitor him. I questioned this but didn’t know what he could’ve ate yet, so I take him home and watch him closely.

After coming home and making sure he is okay. I do a quick sweep of my house and try (emphasis on try, there were crop tops, socks, etc. flung all around my room) to find all the items she had left around my apartment. Lauren picks up her stuff and leaves.

The next day when I am taking a shower I notice she left her razor on the ground by my shower. It looked a bit off so I sent her a picture and asked if a part was missing. She says the bikini shaver of it is missing and seems unconcerned. I tell Lauren I think my puppy may have ate it.

So I go to my local vet to have another checkup and they take X-rays. The vet tells me he indeed ate the razor and that he needs to go to another vet over an hour away for emergency surgery, or he would not make it through the night. Of course, I rush there and they do the surgery.

Later I text Lauren that he is having surgery because he swallowed her bikini razor. Lauren tells me she is sorry for leaving it out and didn’t ever mean for this to happen.

We are good friends, I would like to still be. My question is would I be the a**hole it I asked her to cover part of the costs from his surgery?

My puppy is obviously a bit at fault here for eating it, I’m at fault for not searching my apartment well enough after she made a mess, but I believe she is at fault for leaving a razor out where he could get to it after being reminded SEVERAL times.

I’m not intending on asking her to cover full cost, but would I be the a**hole for asking for anything?”

And here’s how people on Reddit reacted.

This person doesn’t think the writer of the post is in the wrong at all for asking her friend to help pay the bills for the dog.

Another reader couldn’t believe that the friend didn’t offer to pay the whole amount!

I think I agree!

This Reddit user said the person’s friend is obviously not a responsible individual.

At all.

And this reader went so far as to say that they might’ve dodged a bullet with this “friend.”

Lastly, this individual made it quite clear and simple: this is not how real friends treat each other.

What Quote Changed the Way You Look at Life?

The best time to plant a tree was 50 years ago. The second best time is now.

My dad always used to say this when I was growing up and I never had a clue what he was talking about until he explained it to me.

Basically, it means that you should get started today and stop putting things off if you want to get them off the ground and rolling.

And I think those are words to live by!

What quote forever changed the way you look at things?

Here’s what folks on AskReddit had to say.

1. Words of wisdom.

“I had a professor in college he called it the 10/90 rule.

Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.

Changed my life.”

2. Kindness.

“Honesty without kindness is brutality.

Kindness without honesty is manipulation.”

3. Can’t please everyone.

“You might be the sweetest peach on the tree, but some people just don’t like peaches.”

This helped me get over my lifelong desire to be liked by everyone, and allowed me to focus on becoming someone I actually liked.”

4. Don’t worry about it.

“I’ve had a lot of worries in my life. Most of which never happened.” – Mark Twain.

Found it on a workbook for anxiety disorders.”

5. I’ll entertain it.

“It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.

Aristotle.

And yes it isn’t the real quote but elementary school aged me internalized that thought and I have applied it to everything ever since then.”

6. Helped out.

“If you look for the light, you will often find it, but if you look for the dark, it is all you will ever see” – Uncle Iroh, Legend of Korra.

Has helped me through some dark times in the past, just looking for that small bit of good in a heap of bad.”

7. Nobody’s perfect.

“And now that you don’t have to be perfect, you can be good.”

–John Steinbeck, East of Eden.”

8. Let it go.

““Let go or be dragged”.

An old Zen proverb I heard at a meditation class.

Really changed the way I let myself worry about things.”

9. You’re always with you.

“My grandfather once told me, “no matter where you go, there you are”.”

We refer to that a geographical cure — which doesn’t always solve things — so sometimes you have to work on yourself so you don’t repeat your mistakes.”

10. Take care of #1.

“Don’t set yourself on fire to keep others warm.”

This helped a lot with my guilt and burgeoning martyr complex.”

11. From Carl Sagan.

“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us.

It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.”

Carl Sagan.”

12. We’re all replaceable.

“Graveyards are full of irreplaceable people”.

That quote helped me stop going down the path of working myself to death because “my job needs me”.”

13. Courage.

“Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes it is a quiet voice at the end of the day saying, “I will try again tomorrow.” -Maryann Radmacher

I came across this a long time ago, at a point in life that I really needed this lesson. It’s okay if I feel sad and resigned, if my depression beat me for today and I wasn’t able to function. I didn’t fail, I’m not weak, I will try again tomorrow.”

14. Change your language.

“If you’re trying to break a habit, don’t say ‘this is the last time I’m doing it’ to yourself. Instead, say ‘this is the first time I’m not doing it’.”

15. Good one.

“When people show you who they are, believe them.”

– Maya Angelou.”

16. It helps.

“That mountain you’ve been carrying, you were only suppose to climb.’

Really helped me overcome a lot of traumatic experiences and difficult chapters in my life.

I hope it helps someone else out there.”

17. Just do it.

“Dear Abby’s response to a writer thinking of going back to school but worried that she will be 40 by the time she got her degree –

“How old will you be in four years if you don’t get your degree? You are going to be 40 anyway with or without your degree.“

It reminded me that letting age stop me from my plans was just silly. Also, working at a community college and seeing so many people going back to school in their 30s, 40s, 50s and thriving, the quote really spoke to me.”

18. Live it up.

“Some people d** at 25 and aren’t buried until 75.”

– Ben Franklin”

19. Be kind.

“The axe forgets; the tree remembers.” —Zimbabwean proverb.

People don’t forget how they were treated; that’s why it’s so important to be kind.”

20. I wish you well.

“Just because you lost me as a friend doesn’t mean you gained me as an enemy.

I still want to see you eat, just not at my table.”

21. Get through it.

“Your kid isn’t giving you a hard time, they’re having a hard time.

The only way out is through.”

22. Some good ones.

“Don’t let a wishbone grow where a backbone should be.”

“It’s no use wasting time worrying what other people think about you. No one is thinking about you.”

and

“Remember to take care of yourself. You can’t pour from an empty cup.”

Been living up to those ideals recently and I feel I have just started living.”

23. You got this.

“I understand there’s a guy inside me who wants to lay in bed, smoke weed all day, and watch cartoons and old movies. My whole life is a series of stratagems to avoid and outwit that guy.”

– Anthony Bourdain.”

24. The writing life.

“The first draft is just you telling yourself the story.” – Terry Pratchett

I’m not sure why this quote struck me so hard, but it completely changed the way I approach writing. Just get your ideas down in run-on sentences and asides to yourself and loads of [???] at parts you haven’t figured out yet.

It took me more than 30 years to realize that a first draft isn’t just a rough version of the final draft. It’s a map for yourself, and no one else.”

25. Love.

“You cannot convince people to love you. This is an absolute rule. No one will ever give you love because you want him or her to give it. Real love moves freely in both directions. Don’t waste your time on anything else.”

– Cheryl Strayed.”

26. Stupid is as stupid does.

“Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity” – Hanlon’s Razor.

Not everyone’s out to get you, there are a lot of stupid people in the world.”

27. Always do your best.

“I visited Pearl Harbor this week and the one that struck me was: “There were many acts of heroism that day, not all of them recorded.”

It reminds me that even when nobody is watching, it’s still important to put forward your best.”

28. The deal.

“The pain I feel now is the happiness I had before. That’s the deal.”

C.S. Lewis”

29. Still think about it.

“Honey, I hope it’s the worst thing that ever happens to you.”

From my dad when I was complaining about something. He probably didn’t intend for it to be deep or anything but it puts things in perspective. I think of it all the time.”

30. Get out there and explore.

“A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.”

John Shedd”

Ex-Racists Talk About What Changed Their Views

I’ve seen a few documentaries about people who used to hold hardcore r**ist views and how they completely changed their minds and decided to dedicate the rest of their lives to helping other people and spreading messages of peace and love.

And I think that if guys who used to be that into a r**ist subculture can do it, there’s hope for everyone out there.

AskReddit users who used to hold r**ist views talked about how and why they changed.

Let’s check out their stories.

1. A big lesson.

“The Army forced me to live with black people.

Turns out I didn’t h**e anyone, I was just afraid of what I didn’t understand and had some very stupid notions passed on to me from my dad and his dips**t friends.

I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to understand a greater sample of people than my tiny hometown afforded me.”

2. Changed for the better.

“From birth I was raised to be r**ist in a ra**ist household in Virginia. I was ignorant. I used the “N” word, antisemitic, h**ophobic, r**ist language everyday.

My immediate family and extended family all share the same ignorance. At family gatherings if one of my older cousins let slip they were dating someone new, the first question would be “Is s/he white?” Followed by laughter, but the question was serious.

Then I started middle school. 6th grade. On the first day of class I set down my backpack against the classroom wall (like every other student) while we found our desks and had a small Meet & Greet w/ new classmates. I made sure to only speak to the kids (white) whom I knew from elementary school.

Our teacher told us to take our seats. I’m 42 yrs old and I remember this like it was yesterday. I picked up my backpack, found my desk, before I could open my bag the girl behind me told me she liked my earrings, her Mom wouldn’t let her get her ears pierced until high school.

Then I heard another voice from further behind me say, “Ms. Kay, this isn’t my backpack”. The backpack sitting on this girl’s desk was identical to the one sitting next to my desk. We both opened our backpacks and realized we’d grabbed the wrong bag.

Internally I rolled my eyes in disgust, this girl was a “N”. But I was taught to never let it show. So we met each other to quickly exchange. Her smile was beautiful. She wore glasses the same shape as mine. She wore her hair in a pony tail, just like mine. In our back to school shopping we picked the exact same backpack and we picked the exact same Nikes (pink/white).

Her name was Jacinda. I found myself genuinely smiling back to her, and giggling like young girls do. That day she asked to sit together during lunch, and we sat beside each other for lunch every single day of middle school. She was my very first best friend. Jacinda taught me about her Sunday School classes (my family never attended church), we talked about everything important in the life of middle school girls.

She wasn’t allowed to attend my birthday parties, and I wasn’t allowed to go to hers, but we always celebrated together at school. I loved her so much. When it was time to go to high school I continued in public school and her parents chose to homeschool her. I thought homeschooling was the coolest idea. Jacinda was (is) brilliantly intelligent.

God, she was going to do great things for this world. Long before the age of social media, we lost touch sadly – but I still think of her often. After meeting Jacinda I never used another r**ist or derogatory word. Meeting Jacinda changed my life for the better.”

3. Small town in Iowa.

“I grew up in a very small town in Iowa. Couple of hundred people. All white.

So I guess I was raised not to discriminate against people that were different from me because we were all the same. Once I got older and moved to the city, oh yeah. R**ism is alive and well in Iowa.

I didn’t fall into that trap. I didn’t understand it. Ended up in Alabama. My best friend was black. We just had the same sense of humor and liked the same things. I credit him with my kids being non r**ist. He would crack jokes about racial things and they would be shocked.

As they got older they just rolled their eyes. Funniest thing was one of my daughters date shows up and he opens the door and introduced himself as her dad. He moved to Michigan. I miss Charles.”

4. Quickly realized.

“It’s simple really.

I was raised in a r**ist family. Growing up I was kinda r**ist.

Once I actually spent time with people of different races I quickly realized how stupid that is.”

5. Just plain dumb.

“My dad has some pretty xenophobic points of view and that definitely rubbed off on me when I was younger.

Meeting actual people of color through my teenage years made me realize I was being dumb.”

6. Just jokes…

“I grew up thinking I was not a r**ist. I didn’t think badly of blacks or Hispanics. But r**ist jokes didn’t hurt anyone.

Then I moved to an area with about a 90% Hispanic population. The little things that weren’t r**ist, were. The “How many Mexican” type jokes were hurtful and I felt bad. So I stopped.

The easy same thing with blacks , Asians etc, etc. was about the same time.”

7. Poisonous ideas.

“I was not raised by r**ist parents but you can’t help growing up with r**ist messages all around society and tending to believe some of them. I had ideas about indigenous people, Muslim people, all sorts of poisonous ideas.

When I got into my early twenties I started to make good money and began traveling, and all of my r**ist notions disappeared with that. Nothing made me realize how similar human beings are regardless of race, than traveling.”

8. Native people.

“I definitely had some r**ist ideas about native people in my city growing up. There are a lot of native addicts and vagrants but it’s very much a result of a system that’s rigged against those communities.

I didn’t know any of that growing up so when I saw a group of drunk, native people in the park or something, I was generally unimpressed or even frightened.

And I definitely applied those feelings to all the native people I came across. It’s hard to change those reactions but we can all identify the bad reactions and try to curb them.”

9. No indoctrination.

“Grandfather on one side would drop jokes with hard Rs, grandmother on that side would talk about how (whisper) Mexicans were ruining South Dakota long before complaining about illegal immigration was mainstream.

Father wasn’t nearly that far gone, but after one failed relationship with a Chinese woman he encouraged me to marry a white woman, and my mother once vehemently objected to my sister having an openly gay man as a roommate.

So where did it all go wrong? Basically, I traveled to different places and met different people. The town where I grew up had a pretty large Indian population, and I had an Indian best friend growing up (he was also a bit r**ist at the time, frankly).

Went away to Boston for a summer, and through some random set of circumstances found myself going to a black church for the summer. They were just like the white church I had been going to, one kid wanted to grow up to be a programmer just like I wanted to at the time, etc etc. Went off to California for school and was exposed to a wide variety of people.

Hispanic roommate and Hispanic RA freshman year… one was an a**hole, one became a good friend, and I realized it had nothing to do with their ethnicity. Made a good friend sophomore year, and he later came out to me, and either I wrong the whole time about Josh or I was wrong about whatever leftover prejudices I had about gay people.

Now I’m married to another Chinese woman, one of my best friends is black, another is gay, one of my daughter’s best friends is Hispanic, and I’m still here in the bluest part of CA.

There was no liberal indoctrination in college like conservatives are always b**ching about. There was just meeting people and realizing that whatever reasons I had for disliking them or distrusting them from the beginning were false.:

10. Helped you understand.

“When I was going into college I was ignorant, bitter, and certainly not on a good path.

I had a roommate in college who was a person of color, who really helped me understand and put into context a lot that I had been ignorant about.”

11. Dismantle your thought process.

“My situation was complicated growing up. My father was the son of an Italian immigrant with Egyptian roots and he was so ungodly r**ist towards anyone not considered white as he considered himself white.

The thing is, my dad has dark brown skin, dark brown eyes and black kinked curly hair. He looked EXACTLY like the people he was r**ist against. And he hated Arabs…. all Arabs…. and he is part Arab. This was so confusing. He also hated gay people, Muslims, “commies” and any type of alternative lifestyles.

My father hated black people the most. He told me if I ever brought home a black boyfriend he would disown me. He told me, as a small child, that if I misbehaved I would be sent to live with a ****** family in the ghetto.

He was equally misogynist and held onto a strong patriarchal mindset.

I admit, as a kid I repeated his words. All the other kids did too on my neighborhood so I thought he was right. It wasn’t until I was literally in my 30s did I realise the internalized r**ism I still held onto.

All my partners and friends were white my entire life. I felt unsafe near a group of black men. It was only until I moved to northern Europe that I realized that I am not considered white here and experienced r**ism myself and oooooo wow what an eye opener.

I began to dismantle my entire thought process and honestly, I am so repulsed by my father now I can’t even speak to him without feeling disgusting inside. He’s really old now and much more calm and probably won’t live more than 10 years. I have not returned to my birth country to see him in almost 7 years because I am so angry at him.

Because of his r**ism I missed out on friendships, relationships and understanding cultures different from my own. I am making up for it now as the immigrant community that I live in is amazing and supportive but I will never get back that lost time and I will never know fully the extent of damage that my hateful words may have done to people who didn’t deserve it.”

12. Changed your mind.

“Joined the military, left home and experienced cultures around the world.

I was severely lacking in cultural awareness due to growing up in a small town surrounded by openly r**ist people.

Luckily, my children are able to grow in a completely different environment than the one I did.”

Now we’d like to hear from you.

Do you know anyone who has changed their radical views like these people did?

If so, please tell us about it in the comments. Thanks in advance.

People Talk ABout the Weirdest Animal Mating Rituals Out There

You know when you’ve been enjoying a nature documentary and then it gets to the really uncomfortable mating part and you feel like maybe you’re gonna vomit?

If you hate that, do NOT read on.

What is an animal’s mating ritual you’re glad humans don’t have? from AskReddit

We’re about to get the lessons in nature we never wanted, thanks to Reddit.

1. Scorpions

Scorpion males are smaller than females and are often hunted by them. In order to reproduce the male must lock pincers with the female and then drop a packet of sperm on the ground.

He must then maneuver the much larger female over the packet so that she gets the sperm inside of her.

This whole time the female is trying to eat the male who, after his tango with death must run away or become lunch.

– Gringoboi17

2. Tasmanian devils

The male holds the female hostage in her own den until she becomes pregnant, which could be days.

She does violently chase him from her den after she’s pregnant.

But I can’t imagine those days trapped with him are pleasant.

– indigocraze

3. Hippos

Hippos s**t and twirl their tails propeller-style to impress their mates, and if Gloria is interested, she will take a dump on Moto-motos head, which is something I am glad Humans don’t do.

– iamthesex

4. Koalas

Besides that horrifying screams that they produce, there is no actual ‘mating ritual’ or even ‘mating season’ – koala males straight up r**e female koalas whenever they please.

– defaultQueue

5. Ferrets

As cute as ferrets are, they have a horrible mating ritual.

Basically, the male ferret (called a hob), has to maul the ever living s**t out of the female ferret (called a jill) to get her to ovulate.

If humans did this, is would make it a lot easier to avoid accidental pregnancy, but would also make it very obvious when a woman was trying to have a child.

“Not sure if spousal abuse, or just trying to get pregnant” would be a common sentiment.

– Fairytaleautumnfox

6. Frogs

Male Frog: Let me inflate my body to three times its natural volume and then blast it out in the noisiest way possible, girls love this s**t

Female Frog: Your self inflation fetish has seduced me, grab onto my belly and fertilize the water with your male products as I squeeze out a huge mass of absolutely disgusting jelly blobs

– ThadisJones

7. Horses

(well, mares anyway) spontaneously urinate when they’re in season and they’re near a stallion.

It’s completely instinctive and I get the impression it’d be quite embarrassing in humans.

– fursty_ferret

8. Hummingbirds

I watch a lot of hummingbirds around my backyard. I love them so much.

But let me tell you, being a boy hummingbird trying to snag a mate has got to be the most terrifying thing….they fly up quite far, dive bomb almost into the gravel..multiple times. And when one looks like a pretty clear catch, another male bird will come out of nowhere and attack him.

Then come and have the audacity to sit on my feeder and make eye contact with me, with an enemies feather stuck to his face.

God, they’re precious

– Shaneaux

9. Octopus

I don’t want to just rip off my arm which is also my penis and give it to some girl to use then throw away or really and cephalopod because that would involve me sticking my arm penis into her face vagina

– Le-smexy-Baggutte

10. Jackals

I saw a nature film where a female jackal will bring her chosen mate back to her family for a meet up.

Her father and brothers will surround him and scratch up dirt while urinating, soaking him in a mix of p**s and mud.

– wufoo2

11. Ducks

They’re cute r**e machines.

There’s an arm race going on, where males evolve a penis that’s meant to be as efficient as possible for r**ing females, while females evolve twisted vaginas meant to make r**e as hard as possible.

Read about it, it’s fascinating/horrifying.

– thePsychonautDad

12. Surinam Toads

The Suriname Toad keeps its eggs in its back the eggs infuse with the skin.

When the eggs hatch the tadpoles will live inside the skin of their mother until they have matured into young frogs and squeeze out.

– Block_Mountain

13. Worms

There is a kind of worm where the females never want to mate with the males.

So instead actual intercourse the male shoots the sperm after the female, so the worm with the best range gets to pass on their genes

– gifflareater

14. Porcupines

So much erect penis pee spraying and screaming, and then of course the risk of the act itself.

The only good part is they do it once a year instead of frequently, but still.

15. Garden birds

Many garden birds have a ritual in which the male pecks the female’s cloaca empty of the sperm of previous mates before having his own go.

Imagine if men would suck out previous partners’ sperm before having sex with a woman. I have imagined and I am very sorry I did…

If you’ll excuse me, I need to go wash my brain out with soap.

People Talk About What They Miss Most from the 1990s

The 90’s. It feels like a lifetime ago.

Maybe even another dimension. Or a weird, puke-green dream.

But a lot of us miss it anyway.

What’s something from the 90s you miss? from AskReddit

What does Reddit think was the best part of this era? Let’s find out.

1. Sit-in Pizza Huts

I was on vacation in the mountains up state and they had one in town. I got to have pizza in an actual Pizza Hut for the first time since the late 90’s early 2000’s.

We had one outside of town and then that closed and they made a to go one that ended up also closing. Now I can have one of the local places or Papa John’s or Domino’s.

The target nearby does have the mini Pizza Hut pizzas and some of their appetizers. It’s hardly the same as getting it from a Pizza Hut itself.

2. Goofing off without it being posted

I had to stop drinking with one of my friends because she’d ALWAYS record everyone doing anything even remotely fun or goofy and it’d be on snapchat or Facebook within seconds.

Like, I just wanna get a little drunk and dance and have a good time with my friends, I don’t want every person I hardly know seeing me let loose.

3. Authentic social interactions

Being social with people felt so different and authentic.

My friends would sometimes just “drop by” to see if I was home to say hi.

We could pick up the phone and have hour long conversations.

It felt like text message cheapened that.

The lesser dependence on technology seemed to cultivate more genuine friendships but that was just my experience.

4. TV with specific broadcast times

We would all gather in my tiny college apartment to watch The Office every week. Good memories!!

And I believe Game of Thrones was the last time I did that with any friends as well.

I wonder if we’ll ever do that again.. weird to think that might have been the last time.

5. Being unreachable

I miss not being able to be reached, or being able to reach people.

Back then you’d call your friend and it would ring somewhere in their house. If there was no one there (which was common) you’d shrug and just carry on your day. If you just wanted to chill out on your own you’d just not answer the phone.

Now, everyone knows people are never without their phones. I’ve had people p**sed at me because I took an hour to reply to a text.

6. The 90’s aesthetic

It was extreme and alternative, not family-friendly wacky or dystopian like a lot of people think when they see an 80’s aesthetic.

Example: the entire aesthetic of Nickelodeon in the 90’s. Slime and extreme s**t.

7. Online privacy being the norm

It’s unreal how blithe some people have gotten toward privacy.

My brother’s a high school teacher, and a few years ago he caught a girl in his class livestreaming herself just…sitting there, learning. He asked her to stop, and noticed that there were 15 people apparently watching her on the stream, and suggested that the kinds of people who would watch a 16-year-old girl sitting in class are maybe not the kinds of people she should want watching her.

The girl’s response was a confused “Why not?”

8. Mor affordable housing

There was a time when my kid could have moved out and rented with room mates or even on his own.

But its very hard for young people to start out with the current condition.

9. Just general childhood

Free from most adult responsibilities, free from social media, free from bulls**t politics (they were there for sure, but you literally had to look for them, lol), free from a general miasma of fear coming from the media.

When I think back, all I remember is sunshine, the lack of a weight bearing down on my shoulders all the time and the sweet sounds of amazing music.

While I miss it, I am just grateful that I got to experience it.

10. The optimism

It was a pretty happy decade. The Cold War was over. The economy was booming. Technology seemed to be offering us solutions before we even knew we had a problem.

The products of pop culture almost never dwelled on dystopia or decline.

Air travel was about as dangerous as bus travel.

Acid rain and the hole in the ozone layer were problems of the decade before that seem to have been fixed, and climate change was still called global warming and was not nearly so front and center in how people talked about the future.

All in all, the 90s were a pretty solid decade.

11. Mom and pop shops

Family owned convenience stores, diners, burger joints, ice cream parlors, cafes, bookstores, delis, etc.

Even small neighborhood grocery stores.

And independent music venues!

Seems like I’m talking about the 50s but in the 90’s these places still existed. In my hometown most of them are completely gone and were replaced by generic corporate chains or condos. The ones that are still around are struggling to stay afloat and compete.

I’m glad I got to enjoy them while they existed but also realized how much I took them for granted.

12. The optimistic internet

I genuinely feel like the Internet has gone from “the most important and greatest achievement of humanity” to “something that might have been a mistake” during my lifetime

It’s really sad because a global communications network should be a great thing for everyone

– Badloss

13. The airports

I miss how chill and cool airports were.

Watching the plane leave after hugging my parents goodbye or waiting at the window watching it dock knowing someone you were waiting for was about to get off.

– MindSecurity

14. The arcades

Arcades died specifically because home console graphics caught up to them. The PS1 and Saturn got close enough that the differences started feeling minor and then with the Dreamcast and PS2 (and the rise of online gaming) it was all over.

It’s not as though Dave and Busters and Round One are unpopular, but you go for experiences that don’t translate as well to home, which means the few modern arcade games are either steering wheel racers, light gun games, or peripheral-based rhythm games.

15. Full size Frosted Strawberry Pop Tarts

They’re, like, half the thickness these days!

That and eating them while watching back to back episodes of Saved by the Bell on Saturday mornings. Good times…

– panamanimal

Yeah. I agree. With just…all of that.
