Girls Won the Five Top Prizes in National STEM Contest for Middle Schoolers

As people say, “The future is female.” And that trend was certainly on display recently at the 2019 Broadcom MASTERS competition. The competition, “Math, Applied Science, Technology, and Engineering for Rising Stars,” highlights very bright middle-schoolers and is run by the Society for Science & the Public.

This year, girls won all of the top five prizes awarded at the competition in Washington, D.C. What makes it even more extraordinary is that the five winners were out of a total pool of 2,348 applicants from 47 states. A total of 18 boys and 12 girls were then brought to D.C. to take part in the competition.

While in D.C., the middle-schoolers were given STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) projects to work on in teams. The youngsters were judged on leadership, teamwork, problem solving, and communication. The last 20% of their score was based on the science projects that the kids had applied to the competition with. The panel of judges included engineers, scientists, and educators.

The five winners were:

The Samueli Foundation Prize: $25,000
Alaina Gassler, Improving Automobile Safety by Removing Blindspots

Lemelson Award for Invention: $10,000
Rachel Bergey, Spotted Lanternflies: Stick’em or Trick’em

Marconi/Samueli Award for Innovation: $10,000
Sidor Clare, Bound and Bricked

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Award for Health Advancement: $10,000
Alexis MacAvoy, Designing Efficient, Low-Cost, Eco-Friendly Activated Carbon for Removal of Heavy Metals from Water

STEM Talent Award, sponsored by DoD STEM: $10,000
Lauren Ejiaga, Ozone Depletion: How it Affects Us

Maya Ajmera, president and CEO of the Society for Science & the Public, said,”We are just so thrilled that the top five winners were girls this year. This is the first time in our history that it was a sweep for girls. It’s also the first time in our history that we had more girl finalists than boy finalists.”

Way to go ladies! Keep your eye on these kids, because they’re going places.

This Is Why Your Dog Randomly Puts Their Paw on You

It’s cute when dogs randomly put their paws on you — and apparently, it’s not as random as it might seem.

Dog behaviorist Rebecca Forrest wrote about the topic at The Dog Clinic. She says that dogs are actually trying to communicate with you when they lay their paws on you. They can’t speak, so a little paw language will have to do!

The message could be one of several things. First, it could be a simple request for attention.

Putting a paw on you is a relatively polite, subtle way to say: “Hi, remember me? I’m here.” It’s way less annoying than barking or whining, that’s for sure! Dogs were bred to interact with humans, so they inherently love human attention.

They may just paw at you because they know it’ll get them some pets and affection back. Or, they might put their paw on you to reciprocate the love once you’re already petting them.

Similarly, your dog might be trying to signal to you that he’s feeling stressed and needs some reassurance. If there are other signs of stress, such as yawning or flat ears, this may be the case. Rather than comfort your dog, try distracting him instead.

There could also be a more specific need, such as food. Is it your dog’s regular meal time when he paws you? If so, he may be giving you a little reminder.

Either way, the pawing is definitely not intended to dominate, provoke, or irritate — so go easy on your dog if he paws at you a little too often! If it gets to be too much, the best tactic is to ignore him.

This Is Why Most Product Prices End in .99

You may notice that the price of nearly every product ends in a familiar number. Strangely, no matter if you’re looking at an expensive flat-screen TV or a can of tuna, the price tag almost always ends in .99.

If you are OCD like me, it can be incredibly irksome. After all, wouldn’t an even number like $5 be a lot more satisfying than $4.99?

Well, the secret behind this pricing strategy is actually pretty simple. It all comes down to one basic concept: psychology.

According to Julie Ramhold, a consumer analyst with DealNews.com, since we read from left to right, we pay less attention to the end of a number than we do the beginning. And let’s face it, if you’re quickly scanning a shelf for a bag of chips, the $4.99 bag does have more appeal than the $5 one, despite the minuscule difference.

Psychological pricing can have a major effect on purchasing decisions, especially when shoppers are faced with multiple choices in the same category.

“Consumers don’t want to transcend a certain category, so even a penny less may make a huge psychological difference,” explained Subimal Chatterjee, Distinguished Teaching Professor of Marketing at Binghamton University School of Management.

From a business perspective, retailers can capitalize on the psychological pricing concept when it comes down to a change in the number of digits. For example, a product listed for $99.99 technically falls under the three-digit range even though it is essentially $100. Instead of losing a customer because of the three-digit price, a retailer can maximize profit by pricing a product at the top end of the lower range.

Author Mary Potter Kenyon explained, “We see $9.99 and think of it as priced for nine dollars and some cents, instead of rounding it up to ten dollars. We look at a price tag of $10 and we see it as ten dollars, rather than one penny more than the $9.99 price tag!”

For bargain shoppers, even-numbered prices are often available at places like thrift stores, mom-and-pop shops and farmers markets, but this has more to do with the nature of their inventory and the lack of pre-determined prices. No matter where you shop, make sure to consider the full price tag – don’t make the middle-school mistake of rounding to the first digit.

Your wallet will thank you later.

A Woman Was Stung by a Scorpion on a United Airlines Flight

Oh great, can’t wait to fly during the holidays!

A woman was stung “multiple times” by a scorpion while on a United Airlines flight from San Francisco to Atlanta. The passenger felt a stinging sensation on her leg during the flight, and when she went to the toilet, a frickin’ scorpion fell out of her pants and crawled away.

Horrifying, we know.

The woman spoke to TMZ about her experience, and even shared a photo of the creature. Her name has not been released.

United Airlines said in a statement to USA Today that the plane crew “responded immediately” to the incident.

“After learning that one of our customers on flight 1554 from San Francisco to Atlanta was stung during flight, our crew responded immediately and consulted with a MedLink physician on the ground who provided medical guidance,” the airline said.

“The customer was transported to a local hospital. We have been in contact with our customer to ensure her well-being.”

While it’s great that the passenger is okay, the airline didn’t explain how the hell a scorpion got onto the flight in the first place.

Even more horrifyingly, this isn’t the first time that this has happened on a United Airlines flight. A scorpion also stung a man on yet another flight with the same airline in 2017 (was someone on both of those flights? Is there a person bringing scorpions with them when they fly and just letting them go???)

A second airline, EasyJet, had to delay a flight after a scorpion was found onboard in 2017.

Your Cat Makes Facial Expressions, You Just Probably Can’t Read Them

If you pay very close attention, you may finally be able to tell WTF your cat is thinking.

A study in the journal Animal Welfare found that cats show their moods on their faces, but that only a small subset of people can actually pick up on what they’re feeling.

Researchers at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada conducted the study by asking 6329 participants to watch videos of cats reacting to certain events. The participants had to name whether the cat was exhibiting a positive or negative reaction by relying only on their faces—not their tails or any other body language.

Most of the respondents were cat owners. Nonetheless, their average score was just 59 percent correct, which is not very impressive.

But 13 percent of participants scored very well on the test. They correctly guessed 15 out of 20 questions. These participants weren’t just cat owners, but people who had very extensive experience with cats, such as veterinarians.

Thus, the researchers concluded that a minority of people can tell what cats are feeling based on their facial expressions alone.

It’s not clear whether this talent is innate or learned, though.

“They could be naturally brilliant, and that’s why they become veterinarians,” the study’s senior author, Georgia Mason, told The Washington Post. “But they also have a lot of opportunity to learn, and they’ve got a motivation to learn, because they’re constantly deciding: Is this cat better? Do we need to change the treatment? Does this cat need to go home? Is this cat about to take a chunk out of my throat?”

Who knows? Maybe you, too, can learn this skill one day.

If you want to test yourself, a shorter version of the video test that participants used is available online.

Here Are Some Weird Fast Food Items from Around the World

Have you ever eaten at a fast food joint in a foreign country? It can be a little…off. Just kind of weird if we’re being totally honest.

Don’t believe me? Let’s take a look at the evidence.

These responses come to us from the Buzzfeed Community.

1. Pizza Hut – Cheeseburger-Stuffed Crust

Cheeseburger Crust Pizza via Pizza Hut and McDonald's

Posted by Kirk Tinsley on Wednesday, April 15, 2015

“I love burgers as much as the next person, but Pizza Hut decided to go above and beyond by adding 10 of them to their pizza crust. This was introduced in the Middle East in 2012, and it later expanded to other places, like the UK.”

2. Burger King – Mac ‘n’ Cheetos

“You know the deal here: Fried mac ‘n’ cheese that’s coated in Cheetos dust. They initially came with a side of ranch for all of your dunking desires. This menu item was added nationwide in 2016, left for a little, but then made a comeback in 2017. They even added a “Flamin’ Hot” coating as well.”

3. McDonald’s – Gracoro Burger

“The patty consisted of a breadcrumb crust that was stuffed with macaroni, shrimp, and white sauce.”

4. KFC – Double Down Dog

“Originally introduced in the Philippines in 2015, the Double Down Dog was basically just a hot dog with fried chicken as the bun. In fact, this was an iteration of their Double Down sandwich: a bacon and cheese sandwich that had two pieces of fried chicken acting as the bread.”

5. Taco Bell – Cap’n Crunch Delights

“Cap’n Crunch Delights were added as a Taco Bell breakfast item in the United States in 2015. They were basically little pastries that were coated in fruity Crunch Berries cereal. The best part? The center was filled with a “sweet milk icing.” I’m drooling.”

6. McDonald’s – Chicken McDo with McSpaghetti

“This one is pretty self-explanatory: You’ve got a piece of fried chicken and some spaghetti with marinara and cheese. McSpaghetti was actually introduced (and quickly discontinued) in the United States in the 1970s. It was then brought back internationally (specifically in the Philippines) in the early 2010s.”

7. KFC – Cheese Donut

The pizza was also topped with several cheeses, veggies, meats (including chicken sausage, turkey, smoked chicken, and ham), and even an Alfredo sauce.”

“In the early 2010s, Burger King Japan based this burger on an anime character. It consisted of two black buns, their regular beef patty, a hash brown, and a special sauce. Oh, and it also had a giant piece of bacon sticking out of it to look like a tongue. So casual.”

10. Burger King – Premium Berry Burger

Japan Burger King's Berry Burger. Tasted good.

Posted by Michael Thomas on Tuesday, December 30, 2014

“It’s exactly what it looks like. Burger King Japan released this burger, which was topped with berries and a sweet cranberry, blueberry, and blackberry sauce. This was a seasonal menu item that was introduced at the end of 2014.”

Those are pretty weird, if I do say so myself.
