A Lighting Artist Explains His Job, and It Is Pretty Darn Cool

Animated films are a lot of fun, but most people don’t realize that it takes boatloads of creatives to really pull it off. One of those behind-the-scenes jobs in animation that you’ve probably never heard of before: lighting artist.

Like Dan O’Brien. He’s a lighting artist who has contributed to some really cute scenes. But how exactly?

O’Brien went on Twitter to explain what his job is because most people just don’t know what lighting artists do. He shared some illustrations before and after his involvement so we can see exactly what he contributes for ourselves. Check out his thread:

As you can see, the scene on the left looks half-finished, while the scene on the right looks three-dimensional and has a clear mood.

It’s easy to forget that O’Brien was working on a spy film when looking at the art on the left. On the right, we really feel the tension as police sirens pop.

Softer, moodier lighting also helps us see objects and facial expressions more clearly.

You can really see what adding the lighting effects does – without them, the scenes don’t look real at all. The light adds drama, context, and emotion that just isn’t there beforehand.

Of course, O’Brien wants us to know that it takes a team to truly make a good scene great.

Animated films feature contributions from all kinds of talented artists. That’s why they take so long to make – an animated movie can take many thousands of man-hours of work, distributed among an enormous team of different types of animators.

Now that we’ve learned a little about the people behind our favorite scenes we can better appreciate their work!

What surprised you the most about the before and after shots? The comments section is open and ready for your musings.

Watch Out! Tree Snakes in Australia Can Actually Jump.

Australia is full of terrifying creatures that you would never want to run into on a pleasant walk through the woods. Spiders and crocodiles and dingos, oh my.

Well, now you can add jumping snakes to the list.

Yes, you read that correctly. Australian tree snakes belonging to the Dendrelaphis genus can JUMP from tree to tree, flying through the air like winged serpents from mythology…or something like that.

A Ph.D. candidate named Michelle Graham from Virginia Tech University saw some footage of jumping tree snakes in Australia and set out for Down Under to do some research. Graham set up a kind of obstacle course for the snakes up in the trees using PVC pipe and tree branches. She then observed the snakes slithering and jumping through the trees from branch to branch.

Next, Graham plans to study why the Australian snakes feel the need to propel themselves through the air. Two scientific papers that are set to come out in 2020 will hopefully shed some light on that subject.

One good thing about this species: they’re not venomous. Whew! Still, I would not, under any circumstances, want one of these snakes leaping from a tree and onto my head or my back…or even into my path, to be honest. Ugh!

Let’s go to the video, shall we? This video shows a Dendrelaphis pictus, in case you were wondering.

Yikes! No, thank you!

Do you have a fear of snakes? Or of any other animals?

Tell us about it in the comments!

16 Things Kids Today Will Never Understand

There are a lot of great things about growing up in the world today. It’s easier to stay connected to friends and family far away, easier to network from the comfort of your home, easier for introverts to stay “social,” and easier to find your tribe – online if not in real life.

As someone who grew up in the 80s, though, I still think there’s something to be said to living life without modern technology, with television shows that are cheesy and pure, and for playing outside for hours without adults looking on anxiously.

And these 16 things? Kids today will probably never really understand, no matter how well you explain them.

16. We had that delayed gratification thing down pat.

15. I’ll never know why they didn’t make them pocket-sized.

14. Or what it was like to hang out at the mall.

13. This is 100% true.

12. And you’d fight over who got a seat.

11. So I still do this on occasion.

10. And honestly, it shows.

9. And when it timed out with like 2 minutes left omgggg.

8. Don’t look away at the wrong moment!

7. Please don’t be fuzzy, please don’t be fuzzy…

6. Sometimes I miss these types of choices.

5. Was it because they didn’t want to talk to you?! ARGH!

4. Raise your hand if you remember.

3. They will in public school.

2. Or, you know, using a landline.

1. That shizz could take days.

I’m not saying I want to go back, but…maybe for a week or two?

What’s your favorite memory from your GenX, early-Millennial childhood? Share it with us in the comments!

A Kid Got a Magnifying Glass for Christmas…and Promptly Set His Lawn on Fire

One minute you think you got your child a cool Christmas gift, and the next, the whole neighborhood is about to go up in flames.

That’s exactly what happened: a 12-year-old boy in Texas got a magnifying glass for Christmas – and then accidentally set his family’s lawn on fire. I can tell you, as a former 12-year-old boy, that about 99.99% of kids that age are going to use magnifying glasses to start some kind of fire (hopefully of the small variety that won’t spiral out of control.

The boy’s mother explained on Facebook,

“Christmas Day was memorable to say the least!?My twelve year old son Cayden, who is an avid reader, an honor student, and interested in science, asked for a magnifying glass for Christmas. (It’s like a basketball player asking for basketball shoes.) We thought it was for reading, but instead he tried to see if he could light a fire with it! We discovered that he and his two brothers went out on the driveway to see if they could burn a couple holes in some newspaper.

Everything was under control until the boys came running into the house telling us that a corner of the lawn was on fire and the Christmas lights were melting! Justin and I rushed outside to see the entire front lawn turning black! We grabbed buckets, turned on the hose and sprinklers, and I grabbed blankets to smother and trap it – before it could spread any more into the neighbors yard! What a sight to see – a bunch of people running around crazy trying to put a front lawn fire out while wearing matching Christmas jammies!

I want to reiterate this was an accident. It could have been worse but it wasn’t. So instead of a tragedy it will now be a Christmas to remember! 2019- The Christmas the lawn lit on fire. ???

Oh and never buy a magnifying glass for your son!”

People on social media thought the whole incident was pretty darn hilarious.

Well, we’re glad no one was hurt and that they were able to get the blaze started by Cayden under control.

Note to self: don’t buy any young kids a magnifying glass anytime soon…

This Website Warns You About Movies With Sad Dog Plots

This will come in handy for me. My mom doesn’t care if hundreds of men, women, and children get maimed or killed in a movie, but if a dog dies (or even gets lost or inconvenienced for a little while), everyone in the room is going to hear about it.

Let’s just say that watching Old Yeller as a kid wasn’t the most fun thing I’ve ever done in my life.

Do you know people like this? Well, if you do, you should probably let them know about DoesTheDogDie.com. The website is dedicated to “crowdsourced emotional spoilers for movies, tv, books and more.” The site contains “warnings” about more than 4,000 films and over 800 TV series where animals are harmed and killed.

The site also tracks other potentially upsetting categories such as “Drownings,” “Eating Disorders,” and even “There Are Spiders.”

For example, if you search for John Wick on the website, you’d get the straight dope about the dog dying in the film: “Yes, and it’s terrible, BUT John Wick spends the rest of the movie deliberately, gloriously, and violently avenging the dog, so it feels really pro-dog overall.” So you’ll also get some positive reinforcement as well if you need a little encouragement to watch a particular movie.

So next time you’re about to watch a movie with your family or friends, hop on over to DoesTheDogDie.com, type in the movie or movies you’re thinking about watching, and see if any animals are going to bite the dust and potentially ruin your evening.

I’m so thankful for the Internet sometimes.

Sometimes.

A Man Live-Tweeted the Awful Way He Found out His Summer Fling Was Married With Kids

This guy found out his ex-fling was married with children in the most “yikes” way possible — by running into him at church on Christmas Eve.

Dan, or @dxnielandrew_ on Twitter, reported the entire story live on Twitter, and it went viral for obvious reasons.

It all started when Dan went to midnight mass with his mom for Christmas Eve.

“Next to me was a man I hooked up with last summer….and next to him was his wife and children that I had no knowledge of,” he wrote alongside the perfect reaction GIF.

“Can I add we went on 7 dates before he told me he couldn’t be with me because his job was too hectic,” Dan added. “Never realised his job was stay at home dad xxx.”

If that weren’t bad enough, though, the ex then slid into Dan’s DMs because he apparently has zero shame.

Dan posted a screenshot of the DM, leaving the man’s identity anonymous.

Dan denied the man’s advances (good job Dan), replying: “No I’m not going to do that, have a nice Christmas.”

But the man simply doubled down.

“Let’s talk, I can give you Christmas miracle lol xx,” he wrote.

He didn’t stop there either. He wrote a follow-up message, “Dan please hear me out, when are you back in work? Let’s talk please I hav so much I want to say to you. I can’t stop thinking about you xx. Santa said you’re on the naughty list hehe.”

Dan wrote on Twitter to “please come to my funeral” because “I don’t think I’m going to survive Christmas.” Honestly, we can’t blame him.

Cause it KEEPS GOING:

Poor Dan.

But it’s ok.

Seems like Dan’s right because…

Words may fail, but Dan’s clearly winning.

A Teenager Discovered a Planet on the Third Day of His NASA Internship

These kids today…are pretty great, as it turns out!

At least, some of them are.

On only the third day into his internship at NASA, a 17-year-old named Wolf Cukier (awesome name) discovered a new planet that is being called “TOI 1338 b”. The planet is 6.9 times larger than Earth, and the folks at NASA believe the planet will be in a stable orbit for at least the next 10 million years. It is located roughly 1,300 light-years away from Earth.

A post shared by MM News (@mmnewsdottv) on

The teenager discovered the planet while looking at “variations in star brightness” in images captured by NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS).

Cukier is from Scarsdale, New York, and he completed a two-month internship last summer with NASA at their Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland.

Cukier said, “I was looking through the data for everything the volunteers had flagged as an eclipsing binary, a system where two stars circle around each other and from our view eclipse each other every orbit. About three days into my internship, I saw a signal from a system called TOI 1338. At first I thought it was a stellar eclipse, but the timing was wrong. It turned out to be a planet.”

NASA just recently confirmed Cukier’s findings, and they submitted a paper co-written by the teenager about the discovery of the new planet.

Let’s get to meet this whiz kid, shall we?

Cukier also confirmed that he is indeed now looking for other new planets. Keep up the great work!

As the saying goes, the kids are alright.

Tiramisu-Flavored Oreos Are Coming Your Way

Here’s some breaking news from those crazy flavor developers at Oreo: a new cookie flavor is coming, and it’s one I’m already thinking about stuffing in my mouth.

Tiramisu is on its way, available early this year.

The packaging tells us only that the two traditional cookies will sandwich a double layer of creme filling. We’re guessing there’ll be one layer of the normal Oreo creme on top of a coffee flavored creme layer to make the tiramisu flavoring, since the beloved dessert is traditionally made of fluffy marscapone cheese over lady fingers soaked in coffee.

People in other countries are already able to enjoy the sweet treat, and it’ll finally be our turn here in the USA.

Not soon enough, if you ask me.

Alert Instagram user @TheJunkFoodAisle broke the news when they posted an image of the packaging. The announcement spread throughout social media because Italian dessert + American junk food = fabulous.

One follower asked the question we all wanted to know the answer to: “Has this been fact checked? Don’t play with my emotions like this.”

Another announced, “Oh we will be fighting over these.”

Delish says it is real, but you’ve got to cool your jets until April. That’s the supposed month the cookie will crumble. Er…drop.

We also have it on good authority that Most Stuf Oreos are coming back, too.

What do you think? Will you be making room in your secret snack drawer for tiramisu flavored Oreos? Let us know in the comments.

Enjoy These Funny ‘Today’s Kids Will Never Know’ Tweets

Oh, these darn kids today…they’ll never know some of the struggles or the joys we experienced back in the day, now will they?

I’m not talking about the old “I walked uphill both ways to school in the snow every day.” I’m referring to more recent stuff, like 1980s and 90s technology and culture and other stuff like that.

The Twitter-verse has caught on to this “today’s kids will never know” trend, and the tweets are quite entertaining.

Let’s take a look.

1. It really was epic!

2. This was not that long ago…

3. Nothing like it!

4. No one knows really. Just click stuff.

5. A very long time.

6. That was the big time.

7. Sh*t got wild.

8. A big letdown.

9. You’ve changed…

10. Discman 4 Life.

11. This might take a while…

12. It never ended…

13. Always a bummer.

People Share True Facts That Sound Fake

There have been several times while plotting books when I discarded an idea because it sounded too outlandish…even though, in some cases, it was historically true.

In that vein, Redditors thought it would be fun to share facts that are truly hard to believe, and I bet at least a few of these are going to blow your mind!

15. This isn’t really surprising, if you think about it.

Death rates in boxing exploded after the introduction of the boxing glove. Almost nobody ever died bare knuckle boxing because head punches often resulted in broken hands, so nobody used them.

14. A man-eater.

The Champawat Tiger was a female Bengal tiger responsible for an estimated 430 deaths in Nepal and India, (listed in the Guinness Book of World Records and Wikipedia) More people than died in the U.S. in the last 100 years from, snakes, bears, wolves, and spider fatalities combined.

13. I’m going to need video of this.

President Lyndon B. Johnson owned an Amphibious car, the Amphicar, and used it to scare guests by driving them into his lake screaming about brake failure.

12. Let’s get on activating that, hmm?

Humans have the gene to, and are capable of hibernation. It’s just not active

11. This is not actually surprising.

There was once a war between Honduras and El Salvador started by a soccer game.

10. It’s Australia. There’s any number of things that could have happened to him.

Australia once lost a prime minister. as in straight up couldn’t find him. and they have yet to find him.

9. Wait, why?

Saudi Arabia imports camels from Australia.

8. That’s gotta be uncomfortable.

Wombat poop is square. Go ahead, google it. *edit: yes, cube-shaped.

7. A desert is just a desolate, arid environment.

My friend doesn’t trust me with these things now that I’ve told her that Antarctica is the world’s largest desert. She still doesn’t believe it.

6. I’m sure that’s pretty.

It rains diamonds on Saturn, and Jupiter.

5. In case you want to hate corporations a little bit more.

There is a little town in Mexico called Chamula where shamans started using Coca Cola in their religious rituals to heal worshippers. Pepsi heard about this and began giving commissions to shamans if they recommended Pepsi instead, so then Coca Cola did the same and there are now rival religious groups based on which soft drink they use.

4. Crazy or innovative? You decide.

In the 1950’s Popular Mechanics published a story about a former artillery Sergeant who attempted to invent a personal delivery system similar to what Amazon intends to create with drones. Except he used modified artillery shells. He actually got a hold of an M116 howitzer which he fired modified shells over a small town in upstate New York.

The shells were hollowed out inside and a parachute would automatically deploy as it approached the target. The problem was the shells weighed twenty pounds and if the parachute did not deploy that meant a twenty pound shell would come crashing down from the sky and wreck someone’s house or possibly kill someone in the street. As the Sergeant tested the device and was utterly convinced it was a way of the future he offered to sell a solution installing expensive iron plating on the roofs of people’s homes and heavy protective armor for navigating the streets.

This Sargent’s story had become an inside joke among people who market modern electronics and virus software. Create a problem that is unnecessary and then sell people an expensive and completely impractical solution.

3. I fail to see how this could be a bad thing.

Thanks to a botched burglary attempt at the Émancé Nature Reserve (about an hour outside Paris) in the 1970’s, there is now a feral Wallaby population in France.

2. And they were Nazis.

The founding of Adidas and Puma.

Rudolf “Rudi” Dassler and Adolf “Adi” Dassler were born into a German family, and Adi eventually began to produce athletic shoes. Rudi joined his younger brother’s company, and everything went swimmingly… for a while.

Eventually, both brothers joined the Nazi Party and turned on each other. Rudi formed “Rudas,” now known as Puma. And Adi formed “Adidas,” now known as Adidas.

The first time I heard this story, I was convinced it was fake.

1. He might be an alien.

In the hockey world, some of the numbers that Wayne Gretzky put up are mind-boggling. He scored nearly 3,000 points, nobody else even has 2,000. He has more assists than anyone else does points. He recorded 4 seasons with at least 200 PTS, nobody else has ever scored 200 in a season, though Lemieux came close. Rarely do we see a 50 goal scorer anymore, Gretzky set the record with 50 goals in a mere 39 games. So many other records that just make you say “wow.” No wonder he’s known simply as “The Great One.”

Do you have something you would add to the list? Share it in the comments!
