Bhutan Made Teachers and Medical Staff the Highest-Paid Civil Servants in the Country

Bhutan has officially made teachers and medical staff the highest-paid civil servants in the country. In the U.S., by contrast, the highest-paid public employees in most states are college football coaches.

When Bhutan’s new law goes into effect, teachers with zero to 10 years of experience will see a 35% pay raise, while teachers with 10 to 20 years of experience will receive a 45% pay raise. Those with over 20 years of experience will get a raise of 55%.

Bhutan is a small majority-Buddhist country with a population of just 750,000, and the pay raise will affect a significant portion of the population.

India Express reports,

“The numbers of teachers involved in the hike are huge as there are 8,679 teachers, followed by the medical staff who number around 4,000.”

A press release from the Bhutanese Prime Minister’s Office said,

“If the pay revision comes through as proposed by the government, teaching becomes the highest paid profession in the country.”

Meanwhile in the U.S., the highest-paid public employee in the country is Nick Saban, football coach at the University of Alabama, who makes $11.1 million per year. The average teacher in Alabama only earns $50,000 per year.

Bhutan’s new pay structure was pushed by prime minister Lotay Tshering, who was elected in 2018.

Tshering is a one-of-a-kind leader in more than one way. He was a highly regarded doctor before he entered politics, and he continues to work as a surgeon on the weekends, The Guardian reports.

Per India Express, his reasoning behind the pay raise was that teachers and medical staff experience higher stress levels and longer working hours than many other professions.

What do you think about this info? Could we do it in the US?

An Animator Created a Video That Helps Demonstrate How Big Asteroids Really Are

Outer space is full of other planets, stars, moons, and even cool-looking—but dangerous—asteroids.

Everything is just fine as long as these asteroids stay in their place. Astronomers have named certain stand-out asteroids, and animator Alvaro Garcia Montoya decided to animate them and compare them to New York City so we could understand their magnitude.

Video Shows Italians Singing From Their Windows While on Coronavirus Quarantine

Of course, Italian people to find a moment of joy and beauty in what has otherwise been a nightmare for their entire country.

Italy is currently on coronavirus lockdown and it looks like it will be quite a while until life returns to normal again. The country has been hit particularly hard by the coronavirus and 60 million people are being forced to quarantine.

You can only imagine how much this has disrupted the lives of the people there, especially because Italians are so well-known for their love of life.

An Italian journalist shared a video of a vacant street in the city of Siena. In it, one man begins to sing in the darkness and then neighbors join in and all sing from their windows together.

The caption to the Twitter video says, in Italian,

“In Siena, the city to which I am very attached, you stay at home but you sing together as if you were on the street.

I was moved.”

The man who posted the video said a friend sent it to him. He said about the people of Italy:

“The Italians are experiencing a very difficult time.

People cling to what they can, including a traditional song like this.”

As of this writing, there have been more than 15,000 coronavirus cases in Italy and more than 1,000 deaths.

Check out the video below.

People on Twitter were moved by the outpouring of emotion in the city of Siena.

And there were well wishes from the United States.

And someone even shared a similar video of people singing from balconies in Naples, Italy.

This person hit the nail on the head.

Be safe out there and be sure to take care of yourselves and each other!

And, as always, let us know what you think of this video in the comments! We love reading your thoughts!

The Factors That Make You Fall in Love With One Person and Not Another

There’s one thing we can all agree on: love is tough. When you’re deep in the throes of being ~in love~ with someone, it can feel useless to try to explain why or how you got there. It’s because that person is just perfect for you, duh!

But if anybody knows what causes you to fall for one person and not another, it’s the researchers who investigate this very phenomenon for a living.

Ayala Malach Pines is a clinical psychologist and faculty member at Ben Gurion University in Israel. Ayala studies couples, and she’s written around 60 research papers and a handful of books on the subject.

In one book, “Falling in Love: Why We Choose the Lovers We Choose,” Ayala breaks down the 11 factors that are involved in falling in love.

The first factor is “similarity in attitudes, background, personality traits,” Joanie Faletto at Mental Floss writes. The next factor is geographic proximity, and the third factor is “desirable characteristics of personality and appearance.”

After that is reciprocal affection — or, whether the person has feelings for you too. So if there’s a cute, nice person who lives nearby, has some things in common, and likes you? You’ve already got several of the factors involved in falling in love with them.

Additional factors include whether the person satisfies your needs, physical and emotional arousal, and “social influences, norms, and the approval of people in our circle.”

Readiness for a romantic relationship also plays a role, as well as opportunities to be alone together (ahem). Then there are the specific cues in the person’s “voice, eyes, posture, way of moving.”

And lastly, there’s mystery, because sometimes not knowing everything about someone can make things more alluring.

While this information probably won’t make relationships any less confusing and hard, it does provide a helpful starting place for understanding how to get into one in the first place.

Have you noticed any of these factors in your life?

A Tumblr Thread Points Out Strange Historical Facts That Might Make Think

It’s cool to learn new historical facts you thought couldn’t possibly be true. Young children are often surprised to find out that some people believed the Earth was flat, and adults are often surprised to know there are some people who still believe this.

One Tumblr thread dedicated itself to pointing out historical facts that seem too good to be true. We’re not a detective agency and this is the internet, so take these with a grain of salt.

Some of these as yet unchecked facts seem cool though!

A TikTok Video Used Grains of Rice to Show Just How Much Money Jeff Bezos Really Has

You may or may not have heard of Jeff Bezos, the founder and CEO of Amazon and one of the richest men in the world. With a net worth of $122 billion, Jeff’s wealth is difficult for the human mind to even fathom. That’s why one TikTok user made a handy visual aid using, of all things, grains of rice.

Humphrey Yang, or @humphreytalks on TikTok, used one grain of rice to represent $100,000. Then he showed piles of rice representing $1 million (10 grains of rice) and $1 billion (10,000 grains of rice).

The video took him “hours” to make, and it’s a stunning visual representation of just how much more $1 billion is than $1 million.

In a follow-up video, Humphrey carefully measured out the correct amount of rice to represent Jeff Bezos’ wealth.

It’s a whopping 58 pounds of rice.

He tells BuzzFeed News that he didn’t intend to make a political or social statement with the videos. An e-commerce consultant in San Francisco, he makes financial literacy videos on his channel on a regular basis. (And he’s not a teen, contrary to some viral tweets.)

Humphrey said,

“I wanted to present the information the best I could without putting a spin on it; other people can put their spin on it.

But I realize now after I posted the video that a ton of the comments — I’d say 80% of the comments — are saying that wealth is such an inequality, no one should have that much money, and ‘we’re out here struggling for half a grain of rice, which is 50K.’

That’s what’s sparking it.”

The videos have gone viral on TikTok as well as Twitter, because of how clearly they demonstrate wealth inequality.

One person on Twitter wrote, “I love how the single rice grain that represents $100,000 would change my entire life.”

Many others wrote: “TAX THE RICH!!”

Humphrey tells BuzzFeed News that he thinks the reason behind wealth inequality doesn’t lie with individual rich people, but rather with “the system itself — capitalism itself.”

What do you think? Leave your thoughts in the comments!

Is Corona Losing Sales Because of Corona Virus?

Not too long ago, CNN tweeted something interesting and, frankly, surprising.

According to a poll, 38 percent of Americans wouldn’t buy Corona Beer because of the corona virus.

The internet thought that was hilarious…and that 38 percent of Americans are stupid.

Some even felt sorry the innocent beer company was suffering because of these “idiots.”

Another user made a thought-provoking comparison to another health crisis with this tweet:

Although some data supports people are actually Googling “Corona Beer Virus,” there isn’t much evidence pointing to anyone not drinking the beer because they are afraid of contracting the virus.

In fact, HuffPost did a bit more digging and found the survey’s results were likely taken out of context. The poll was conducted by a PR firm whose press release didn’t list the questions asked of participants. Eventually, the questions were uncovered:

  • Are you a beer drinker?
  • Are you a Corona drinker?
  • Is Corona related to the coronavirus?
  • In light of the coronavirus, do you plan to stop drinking Corona?
  • Would you buy Corona in a store?
  • Would you order a Corona in a restaurant/bar/public venue?
  • Would you buy Corona under any circumstances now?

No, not under any circumstances said 38 percent of “beer-drinking Americans,” when asked the last question.

But with the way the questions are worded and how the last three questions have nothing to do with the corona virus, you can see this survey is far from scientific. Maybe these people don’t drink Corona Beer at all, under any circumstances.

What do you think? Are these 38 percent stupid or just plain confused by this poll?

Let us know in the comments.

Can Hand Sanitizer Help to Stop the Coronavirus From Spreading?

Have you been to Costco lately?

I stopped in the other day to pick up a few household items: paper towels, toilet paper, toothpaste and a few free samples. By the time I reached the back of the store, I realized very quickly that I had no idea what the coronavirus was capable of.

From the barren shelves where toiletries once laid to the long lines for bottled water, I was in disbelief. But the one area that looked like it had been raided by a colony of fire ants was the hand sanitizer section.

While everyone around the globe rushes to scoop up the last few bottles, it begs the question: Does hand sanitizer actually do anything against the coronavirus?

OK, well maybe her “expert” opinion is a bit out-of-the-box.

However, the fact is that hand sanitizer does have positive properties that make it a worthwhile deterrent to the dreaded COVID-19. However, you should probably check the label for a specific level of alcohol content first. At least, that’s according to one doctor:

Of course, if Twitter doesn’t convince you, maybe reading the official Center for Disease Control (CDC) website. The coronavirus page includes a plethora of information, including preventative actions.

Consider spending a few more seconds at the sink than that guy.

According to the CDC website, preventative actions include avoiding contact with people who are sick, avoiding touching your nose, mouth and eyes and cleaning and disinfecting objects that are frequently touched.

While washing your hands for at least 20 seconds is optimal, the CDC does mention hand sanitizer as an alternative.

If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.

Now you know!

SNL’s Heidi Gardner Wrote Letters to Nursing Homes in All 50 States During Their Coronavirus Lockdown and Inspires Others to Do the Same

We live in interesting times. The coronavirus, aka COVID-19, is sweeping the globe, there’s no vaccine, it’s killing many people with underlying medical conditions, such as the elderly and infirmed, and it’s spreading fast enough to make most of us very, very nervous.

One of the worst parts, though, is social distancing. We don’t have the help we did before, or the social contact we did before, and even just going to the grocery store can seem like a relieving foray back into the world-that-was. But since this virus is much more deadly for elderly people, places like nursing homes and care centers have taken strict precautions regarding visitors. Which means that older people, who probably look forward to visits and chats with friends and relatives on a weekly basis, are now more alone than ever.

Enter Saturday Night Live phenom and genuinely stellar example of how to human, Heidi Gardner. She found herself thinking about that one day, and posted this idea to her Instagram story: handwrite a letter to a nursing home in all 50 states.

She posted images of the letters she was writing (adorable stationery, btw!), and encouraged people to take some time to share the love in a similar way.

Heidi just wanted to let residents know they hadn’t been forgotten, they are loved, and that we are all in this together.

She then posted an example to her Instagram page in case people wanted to help, but were at a bit of a loss as to how to get started.

Heidi’s story and subsequent Instagram post touched people everywhere – people who, coincidentally, also found themselves with extra time on their hands.

They began to reply with pictures of their own cards, like this person, who had a double-bonus of being able to downsize her greeting card collection.

And this person, who bought a few too many Valentine’s Day cards and is now going to use them to spread the love to seniors around the country.

It’s become a bit of a family affair, with Heidi’s younger brother being one of the first to reply with images of his own effort…

And then her other brother hopped on the very-worthy bandwagon.

He even decided to throw some flower seed packets in each one, too.

With a little time, help, and patience, flowers will appear and literally brighten days for weeks on end!

Not to be left out, Heidi’s sister-in-law is also sending letters of her own!

While just sending little bits of lovely words and pretty cards in the mail is sure to make days in nursing homes everywhere, some people have taken Heidi’s idea and really run with it! They’re doing things like including images of their pets in the cards, and this pup is about to be Everyone’s Pet!

That face, you guys! How can you see that and not smile?

This cat has decided to help his human overlords feel better today, and that face is very good at spreading cheer, I think.

What’s amazing is that many people are following Heidi’s lead and not sending one, but stacks of letters.

Given that there are hundreds of thousands of seniors out there stuck in thousands of homes around the country, the more people who write, the better.

I love that Heidi is inspiring people to take some time out of their days to do something nice for others, especially at a time when we all have our own particular stressers. There’s something about people personalizing and hand writing these that make the gesture even more special.

I can’t imagine the people who read these letters won’t be touched (without the actual touching, so no rules will be broken!).

Recently, a news station picked up the story, quoting Mr. Rogers:

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things on the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’”

It’s never a bad thing to be part of Mr. Rogers’ legacy!

This is Heidi Gardner with the idea, and the platform, and people everywhere with good hearts, being helpers and doing excellent work amongst the current chaos.

We’re all struggling a bit with the idea that a virus could hurt so many people we love – and people we don’t know at all, too – and that life as we know it is going to be disrupted for the near future.

Why not use some of your time to not only reflect on what social distancing means for you and your family, but for other people, too?

If you want to get involved in Heidi’s idea to mail cards to nursing home residents, get creative! Your kids could draw pictures, you could steal the seed idea (I love it!), you could send pics of your own adorable animals.

Or just write heartfelt messages that remind people they’re not alone in this whirlwind of madness.

I honestly can’t think of a better use for our time, and also, I can’t wait to hear about the inevitable pen pal relationships that result from these unexpected connections! Be safe out there, my friends. As importantly, be kind. Be caring.

And when you look for the helpers, I hope you find yourself among them.

Dwayne Wade and Gabrielle Union Talked About Supporting Their Transgender Daughter

Dwayne Wade made a lot of positive waves on a recent appearance on Ellen, where he sat down to talk with the host about, among other things, his transgender daughter.

Wade is a former NBA star who was recently honored with his Miami Heat number being ceremoniously retired. His wife of six years, Gabrielle Union, is a celebrated actor currently starring as Detective Sydney Burnett in L.A.’s Finest.

Their child, originally named Zion and raised as a boy, recently told them she’d like to go by Zaya, and use female pronouns, which Wade took some time to delve into during his time on Ellen.

Wade explains his perspective at the start of the clip, saying,

“When our child comes home with a question, when our child comes home with an issue, when our child comes home with anything, it’s our job as parents to listen to that, to give them the best information that we can, the best feedback that we can, and that doesn’t change because sexuality is now involved in it.”

Watch the clip if you have the time. Wade does a fantastic job of describing how he feels a parent should respond to a situation like this, with grace, understanding and acceptance.

Wayne expressed full support for Zaya and for the LGBTQ+ community at large.

“We are proud parents of a child in the LGBTQ+ community, and we’re proud allies as well.”

In response to Ellen’s thoughts on what it must be like for her to be in the spotlight by virtue of her celebrity parents, Wade said,

“This is our opportunity to allow [Zaya] to be a voice.

Right now it’s through us, because she’s 12 years old, but eventually, it will be through her.’”

Just look at how much mom and daughter had recently over Christmas… on the beach!

It’s Ok to listen to, love & respect your children exactly as they are.”

In the video, young Zaya remarks,

“Be true to yourself…what’s the point of being on this Earth if you’re going to try to be someone you’re not? I

t’s like you’re not even living as yourself, which is, like, the dumbest concept to me.”

Amen, Zaya. Amen.
