Mountain Dew and Doritos Are a Snack Marriage Made in Heaven

You can never go wrong with soda and chips. The sugary, bubbly goodness of your favorite soft drink helps melt away the crunchy, spicy satisfaction from your favorite-flavored chips.

But what if I told you that two industry giants are working melding together into one flavor-packed punch?

That’s right, folks. Mountain Dew and Doritos are joining forces and they’re doing it in one of the most interesting (and potentially amazing) ways possible.

Available as a limited-edition item, Doritos Mountain Dew chips could be the life-saving snack you’ve only dreamt about. Combining the signature citrus sweetness of Mountain Dew with the perfectly constructed crunch of a Doritos chip certainly sounds intriguing. Then again, there have been many instances of two food icons trying to make magic only for it to fall laughably short.

In fact, the two brands have attempted to craft a new concoction before. Back in 2008 and 2014, PepsiCo Inc., which owns Mountain Dew, tried released Doritos-flavored Mountain Dew. Fittingly dubbed “Dewitos”, it definitely sounded better in theory than in practice. I never managed to get my hands on a bottle of the science experiment gone wrong, but I’m not upset.

Unfortunately for some flavor enthusiasts, the new Doritos Mountain Dew chips are not yet available in the United States. Currently, the new snack offering is exclusively sold in Australia. So if you’re fiending for a new flavor to spice up your snack time, try making friends with someone from down under.

Just make sure to bring something to wash it down with. Everyone has a different palette, but maybe our Aussie friends are on to something.

Remember: Don’t knock it till you try it.

Important Steps to Properly Cancel Your Credit Card

If you have a credit card you need to cancel, don’t cut in half and just toss it in the trash. Protect yourself, your identity and your credit score by taking all the steps necessary to close the account permanently.

Here are 6 steps to properly canceling a credit card account.

1. Pay off the balance first.

Many issuers don’t require you do this before closing the account, of course, but if you close it with a zero balance, then you won’t have to remember to do it later.

You can also transfer the balance to a new card–preferably one with a zero interest balance transfers offer.

Update your subscriptions and auto-pays to your new card too.

2. Redeem your rewards.

No time like the present.

Figure out how to use or transfer your rewards and bonuses and enjoy them before they’re gone.

3. Call customer service.

Find the phone number on the back of the card and dial to speak to a representative.

Note that person’s name and verify you have a zero balance. Tell them you are canceling your card.

You’ll have to listen to their retention offer, but confirm you are canceling the card and have them note that the closing is at your request.

4. Write and send a cancellation letter.

Go old school and follow up your phone call with a letter via certified mail including your name, address, phone number, account number and detailing your call with the bank’s representative.

Repeat you want the account noted it was closed at your request and ask for verification you closed it with zero balance. It may sound like overkill but you never know what happens when you hang up the phone with customer service.

Mistakes happen.

5. Get a copy of your credit report.

Review your credit report for free once a year from each of the three credit bureaus (TransUnion, Experian and Equifax) at AnnualCreditReport.com, It will take at least a month for the canceled account to appear.

Make sure it says closed at customer’s request. If it doesn’t, call customer service.

6. Now you can cut up your credit card.

Put it through a shredder or cut it up into little pieces.

Yay!

It’s not necessary, honestly, to cancel a credit card. But do it if there’s a high annual fee and you no longer need the perks from it. You also have to keep an eye on your interest rate. A rate that’s out of line with what else you can get may prompt you to cancel that card.

But, no matter the reason, make sure you follow these steps to make sure you and your future credit are protected.

The Navy is Flushing Millions Down the Drain on New Aircraft Carrier Toilets That Cost $400k to Unclog

You’ve heard the phrase “flushing money down the drain’, right? Well in the case of the U.S. Navy, that’s literally happening.

The military branch’s newest technological marvel, the USS Gerald R. Ford, is as top-of-the-line as they come. The ship features nuclear reactors that enable it to travel for a quarter-century without needing to refuel. It can literally toss planes out of the sky with its electro-magnets.

Yet, for all of its marvelous (and expensive) features, none compares to the ship’s toilet system. Despite all of its high-tech features, the ship’s toilet system is so poorly engineered that it requires powerful acid to completely unclog and flush it out.

As for the cost of the acid flush? Well, let’s just say you might think twice about pulling the handle.

It costs approximately $400,000 to complete the acid flush. And it’s not just a one-time ordeal, either.

According to a report from the Government Accountability Office, the toilet system is a serious nightmare for most people to digest:

The effects of more onerous day-to-day maintenance costs are hard to quantify using available Navy data. For example, the Navy used a brand new toilet and sewage system on the CVN 77 and 78, similar to what is on a commercial aircraft, but increased in scale for a crew of over 4,000 people.

To address unexpected and frequent clogging of the system, the Navy has determined that it needs to acid flush the CVN 77 and 78’s sewage system on a regular basis, which is an unplanned maintenance action for the entire service life of the ship.

According to fleet maintenance officials, while each acid flush costs about $400,000, the Navy has yet to determine how often and for how many ships this action will need to be repeated, making the full cost impact difficult to quantify.

The ship holds more than 4,500 sailors and Marines, so that’s a lot of bathroom breaks. With the lifetime costs of running the ship rising to about $123 billion, it’s about time the navy realizes it has a profound pooping problem.

Hopefully the mess hall serves plenty of fibrous fruits and veggies.

Bon voyage!

A Mom Shared a $9 Paycheck After Working Over 70 Hours as a Server

Working as a server can be thankless. After all, staying on your feet, dealing with rude customers and trying to stay sane can be extremely difficult. It can be even worse when you work almost double the standard workweek. For one mom, putting in 70 hours of work should have led to a promising payday.

Boy was she disappointed.

Anyone who works in the food-service industry can attest to the low hourly wages. But in the case of Austin native Aaliyah Cortez, her recent paycheck showed just how silly the system is.

Let’s let her TikTok post explain:

Despite working just over 70 hours, Cortez ended up netting just $9 after taxes. Her TikTok video revealed she made roughly $150 in hourly wages. If you’re not a math whiz, don’t worry. I did the simple math and her hourly wage is shocking: $2.13.

Still, $150 would have been a reasonable amount to take home. That might cover a couple grocery store runs or even help fill up a few tanks of gas. But by the time medicare, taxes and social security took their respective bites, the waitress was left mostly empty-handed.

Fellow former servers know all too well about the inequitable system.

The bartender and server at a local sports bar luckily received about $700 in tips. And as any experienced server knows, tips can literally make or break your week. However, the overall system reflects a serious issue, at least according to Cortez:

“It’s not right that we have to do this, but I wanted to shed some light on the issue and inform the public about the importance of tipping.

If I had a good two weeks from tips my check will be on the lower side.

At my last restaurant, my checks would come out to be $0.”

While the system may not change overnight, Cortez’s TikTok post certainly sparked some interesting discussions over the equity gap for food-service workers and other employees who rely heavily on tips to boost their income.

Not everyone was sympathetic toward Cortez. After all, the tip money is another expense out of a customer’s pocket.

At the end of the day, a server can’t control how he or she is paid. And restaurants certainly aren’t going to do anything drastic to put more money in an employee’s pocket. So the next time you dine out, don’t forget to tip your server.

Every dollar matters.

The Things You Need to Consider When Jogging With Your Dog

Many dogs enjoy running with their owners and many happily keep up with their humans. Some dogs, though, look like they’re trying way too hard to keep up and don’t look very happy at all. Not that they could tell you. Dragging an unhappy or unsuited dog on a run is, at best, mean to your pet, and, at worst, can have deadly consequences.

While some people say dogs are only good for short energy bursts, others say the long-range exercise is good for them and keeps excess weight off. Before you take your pal on another session around the neighborhood, there are a few factors you should consider.

Here are four things you need to think about when you take your dog with you on a run.

1. The breed of your dog.

Large breeds with long legs are the best breeds suited for keeping up with you for long periods of time. Dogs like these will be your huskies, border collies, labradors, dalmatians and other working type breeds. Greyhounds, pitbulls, beagles and English Setters are good for short bursts of speed like sprinting.

Brachycephalic dogs–dogs with short noses–like bulldogs, pugs, boxers and shih tzus will overheat easily and struggle with breathing, so they shouldn’t ever be taken on runs.

Also consider the length of your dogs legs. Short legged dogs like dachshunds shouldn’t run with you either.

2. How old is your dog?

Neither puppies nor senior dogs should be taken on runs. If your pup’s growth plates aren’t yet closed, extended runs can cause permanent damage. Big breeds take longer to develop too.

Consult your veterinarian before trying to run with your dog. Senior dogs get the same aches and pains as do the rest of us as we age. Consider leaving them at home too.

3. How healthy is your dog?

Take into account your dog’s overall health and consult your veterinarian for breed specific problems before bringing him along on your regular runs.

Like people, your dog should have some warm up time. Also, he’ll need to slowly build up stamina just like you should. Bring along water for him too.

And, don’t take him running after a big meal as it could cause life-threatening problems like Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus Syndrome.

4. What’s the weather like?

Make sure your dog’s coat, breed and paws can handle the outdoor climate. If you think your dog can tolerate what’s going on outside but could use extra protection, you can buy coverings for her body and paws.

And if it’s hot, try to lay the back of your hand on the pavement for at least five seconds. That’s how it will feel to your dog’s paws as you run. Then you can make informed decisions on whether to take her or not.

Finally, check in with your dog (at least as often as you check your Fit-bit). He can’t tell you if he needs a break or a drink. But since you’ve chosen him to be your exercise partner, it’s up to you to make sure he’s getting his needs met too.

Running with your dog can be a fun way to stay in good health. Just make sure your dog is having fun and staying healthy too.

Countries That Actually Have More Than One Capital City

When you think about capitals, you probably think of one major city that serves as the seat of government. Yet, that’s not always the case. There are some countries that have two or even more such cities.

Countries that are formed by merging regions can have mulitple power centers. Or sometimes, cultures can vary across a nation resulting in a split of capital duties.

Here are 8 of these countries that function with two or more capital cities.

1. La Paz and Sucre, Bolivia

Photo Credit: Wikimedia / La Paz

La Paz and Sucre are quite different cities, yet both serve as capital cities in Bolivia.

La Paz is Bolivia’s administrative center. Set up high in the Andes, it attracts tourists from around the world.

Hundreds of miles away, Sucre, surrounded by silver mines, rivals as Bolivia’s constitutional capital city.

2. Santiago and Valparaíso, Chile

Santiago, a modern, bustling city is the official capital.

Less than one hundred miles away, Valparaíso is a colorful cultural center with a boho vibe and houses the legislature.

3. Yamoussoukro and Abidjan, Côte D’Ivoire

Abidjan is the original and functioning capital of Côte D’Ivoire. It’s a vibrant city with art galleries, modern architecture and market districts.

But, President Félix Houphouët-Boigny, who ruled Côte D’Ivoire from 1960 to 1993, made his childhood home and sleepier town of Yamoussoukro a capital too.

4. Prague and Brno, Czech Republic

The official office of the President is in the historic Baroque Prague Castle, yet the Moravian city of Brno houses their Supreme Court.

5. Mbabane and Lobamba, Kingdom of eSwatini

This used to be called Swaziland.

Mbabane is the administrative capital while the ruling royal family mainly lives in a palace in Lobamba.

6. Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, Malaysia

Photo Credit: Flickr / Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpar is the official capital of Malaysia. It’s a large, crowded city packed with rooftop bars, cultural landmarks and big time traffic.

The government also built the more quiet, accessible city of Putrajaya for conducting business.

7. Cetinije and Podgorica, Montenegro

Cetinije served as the center of power for years before Podgorica came into favor after World War II.

Now Centinije is referred to as the Old Royal Capital. The President still uses its Blue Palace as the official residence, but most of the work is done in Podgorica.

8. Amsterdam and The Hague, The Netherlands

Amsterdam is famous for its canals and free-spirited culture. It’s even constitutionally designated as the capital. But all of the administration is done from The Hague.

These are far from the only countries with this kind of administrative setup. But it’s interesting to see how topography, politics and culture are taken into account when establishing seats of power.

So, how did the United States figure this out? We set up a governing district along the vacant banks of the Potomac River and called it Washington D.C. And the rest is US history!

Photos of the Bookmobiles We Needed Before the Internet Came Along

Many years ago, rural homes had no way to get books other than from libraries on wheels. These bookmobiles traveled all over the countryside delivering literature to towns and villages.

The first bookmobile was a horse-drawn carriage appearing in Warrington, England, in the late 1850s. Later, vehicles outfitted with libraries lent out books, peaking in popularity in the mid-20th century.

Let’s look at some of these early book-delivery systems.

2. Bookmobile, Indonesia, Early 20th Century

3. First Motorized Bookmobile, Washington County, Maryland, 1912

Lots of bookmobiles are still being used, but they’re mostly falling out of favor because digital materials are easier and less expensive to distribute.

But never forget what it feels and smells like to have a good old fashioned book in your hand. And, what a privilege it is to be able to use digital literature.

Bookmobiles and portable libraries still play an important role in reaching people who can’t download whatever they want to read.

People Discuss What They Will Never, Ever Do in Life

You know that term “I’ll try anything once!”

WRONG! Not these people.

And not me, either. I’m pretty open-minded about most things, but I will never, ever do hallucinogenic drugs. I even felt this way when I was a teenager.

I already know what would happen: I’d freak out, lose my mind, and go insane. So it’s better just to avoid it, right?

AskReddit users admitted what they’ll never do.

1. Don’t ever do it.

“Heroin.

I was on morphine after an operation and hated it. I have negative desire to try heroin.”

2. I think you’d have to be crazy.

“Run for office.”

3. It’s not for everyone.

“Give birth.”

4. Just don’t start.

“Smoke a cigarette.

My grandpa smoked 3 packs a day starting when he was 12 years old until he was 50. He then “quit” and only smoked two packs a day. He lived for another decade or so before he unsurprisingly died from lung cancer.

Seeing what he went through in the last few months was enough to convince me to never touch a cigarette. His lungs were so bad, when the doctors diagnosed him the doctor legitimately said, “smoke them if you got them, because you might as well enjoy your last little bit of time.” I wish he could have quit for real in time for it to make a difference.”

5. Don’t want to pass it on.

“Have biological children.

Too many bad genes that I would rather spare someone else from inheriting.”

6. This is amazing.

“Bungee jump.

A broken rubber brought me into this world and I’m sure as hell not gonna let one take me out.”

7. That wasn’t nice.

“Become president, according to my 12th grade English teacher.”

8. A lot of people do this.

“Marry for money

A lot of people asking me why not..because I get approached by rich douches who think I can be bought. I’m not marrying for anything other than love, period.”

9. Nothing casual.

“Be intimate with someone unless I have a genuine emotional connection”

10. That’s a good thing.

“Treat any retail or service employees like garbage.

After working retail I couldn’t bring myself to do it.”

11. Just say NO.

“Crack is whack.”

12. It’ll come back to haunt you.

“Never fuck with another lad’s woman.

If she cheats with you, she’ll cheat on you, and vice-versa tbf. That shit will come back to haunt you.”

13. Probably a good idea right now.

“Go on a cruise.”

14. Freakin’ out!

“Hold a tarantula.”

15. Nice work!

“Start drinking again. 101 days sober here. Wheeeeeeeeeeee!!!”

16. Not gonna happen.

“Cheat on any of my girlfriends.

I had it happen to me in a bad way in a 4 year relationship and I know the pain, so I vowed to never do that to anyone ever.”

17. Smooth move.

“I will never ever put Nair on my balls again.”

18. Some people shouldn’t even touch it.

“Drink alcohol.

I’ve watched it destroy so many people in my life, and it singlehandedly fueled the ruination of my relationship with my father (he was a drunk all my life).

I will never put my future spouse or my kids or anyone through that.”

19. A terrible idea.

“Meth, not even once.”

20. Not a thrill-seeker.

“Skydive. Fuck that shit.”

21. I agree with this one.

“Live in a city where I have to commute greater than 30 min one way for a job.”

22. No more.

“Have another baby.

We always said we’d be “one and done”, and everything about this experience, from conception to pregnancy to birth and everything after that, has just confirmed this for us.

Childfree peeps, stick to your guns. Even if you are 100% all in, this experience can still break you. I’ve never been more exhausted, my marriage has never been under so much strain, nor our financial future so uncertain…. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I’m not offended if you call me a “mombie” because it’s the truth.

I don’t regret the one, but it definitely stops here. Even got my tubes tied during my c-section! Fuck that noise!”

23. This is sad.

“Come out to my family. Largely because, as homophobic as they are, I’d rather have a homophobic family than no family.”

24. You might have to someday.

“Poop in a public restroom.”

25. Not for you.

“Believe in a higher power.”

26. I would never do this either.

“Go in tight underwater caves.”

27. No one should do this.

“Lick a toilet for internet fame.”

28. Fighting rich men’s wars.

“Serve in the Army to fight and die for some rich folks.”

29. You’ll never meet Mickey.

“Go to fucking Disneyland.”

30. Stay far away.

“Go back to my ex.”

31. Sounds horrible.

“Times Square on New Year’s Eve.”

32. They’ll catch you.

“Tax fraud, the last thing anyone wants on their ass 24/7 is the IRS.”

33. Metalhead for life!

“Stop listening to metal.”

Well, there are sure a lot of things to add to the list based on those answers.

What about you? What are some things that you will never, ever try in your life?

People Talk About What All of Us Should Do During Our Lives

Life is precious. And we really never know when our time is up. That’s why it’s important to get the most out of life while you can.

Of course, we’re all unique and we value different things, but it’s important to hear what others think we should be doing during our lives because some of their ideas might just rub off on us…

Let’s see how AskReddit users answered this interesting question.

1. Everyone should do it at some point.

“Work in a face to face customer service job for at least one week.

So, either retail, restaurant or even call center.

Then maybe people wouldn’t be such assholes.”

2. Hit the open road.

“Take a road trip.

Going across the country in a car, especially with friends, is an experience that everyone should have in their lives.”

3. Definitely a good idea.

“Learn a language.

I think it’s a great way to understand other people and cultures.”

4. The horrors of history.

“Visit Auschwitz or any other concentration camp to really understand what humanity is capable of.”

5. A real eye-opener.

“Go to court for at least one morning or a full day.

You will be stunned to learn what is going on between the ears of half the people you walk by on the street.

If you think mankind is pretty fucked, you don’t know the half of it.”

6. Go at least once.

“Go to Yosemite National Park.

Words fail to describe it.”

7. Adrenaline junkies.

“Go skydiving.

Just went last November and it was exhilarating. Every instinct in my body said do not jump out of this damn plane and then there I was free falling out of a damn plane.

Absolutely amazing, and I will definitely be going again.”

8. Everyone should try it.

“See a therapist.

You don’t have to be on the verge of a mental breakdown to see a therapist. Your life could be going exactly how you want it to and it would still be beneficial to go speak to one.

You don’t need a long commitment, it is perfectly okay to go only once or twice. A good therapist can teach you how to improve yourself, sometimes in areas you didn’t even know you were lacking.

They are great at teaching you how to expand and change your way of thinking for the better.”

9. Falling in love.

“Fall head over heels in love, if only just once.

Take the chance of getting hurt by another.

Even if the relationship doesn’t work out in the end, you’ll still be grateful for the time you’ve had.”

10. It’s never too late.

“Learn to play an instrument.

I’m a 37 yo guy and I don’t generally show my feelings.

I find that I channel those feelings through my music.”

11. Take it all in.

“Sit and watch the sunset and recognise that the sun is not sinking, and you are on a planet which is revolving away from the sun (poorly worded, but you get my meaning I hope).

Knowing what we are (evolved animals) and where we are is an important part of life. Similarly, looking up at the stars and recognising that you’re not looking up, you’re looking out.”

12. Make a difference.

“Do some volunteer work in your community where you can make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Even if you just pick up some trash once in a while.”

13. This is very important.

“Budget.

Know how to spend money, and stretch a dollar.

Sometimes it won’t be enough, but trying to put even a few dollars away every little while can save your butt.”

14. Good advice.

“Get out of your comfort zone to understand others. Can’t understand why people like playing video games? Try one. Trying to figure out why so many people like that book? Read it. Thinking to yourself why that one singer has so many followers? Listen to their songs.

Your friend won’t stop talking about that restaurant down the street? Have a lunch.

When you get out of your comfort zone and start experiencing life through someone else’s eyes, you realize how much you are missing out on life.”

15. Five-point plan.

“These are the things one must accomplish in their lifetime. Not master them, but at least give it a college try (not in order of importance):

Learn how to cook

Learn how to play a musical instrument

Become a good lover

Learn a foreign language

Learn to drive a manual transmission

The basic five. Have fun.”

What do you think?

What are the things that we should all be doing while we’re on this planet?

Share your thoughts with us in the comments, please!

People Sound off on the Most Underrated Inventions

I already what I would say…

Air conditioning. No doubt about it. I don’t know if I’d be able to function or even live if it didn’t exist. But hey, enough about me.

Here’s what people on AskReddit had to say about this subject.

1. Definitely a huge one.

“Refrigeration.

It changed the world. Food can be preserved and shipped vast distances. Supermarkets are a thing now! Frozen fruit and vegetables, meat, dairy are all readily available.

We have fridges in our homes. We can make ice on a whim. Our beer is cold and life is good.”

2. I’m a huge fan.

“The public library.

More information and entertainment than you could ever get through in a lifetime, paid for by the people, for the people, and open to everyone? A place where you can freely go and use the computers if you don’t otherwise have access? Get out of the rain?

Research local history or your family tree? Where there are people who will help you find that bit of information you need but don’t know where to start looking? Where you’re not expected to buy anything? Where there are storytime sessions for young kids right alongside adult learning classes?

Oh, and pretty much every town has one? Where the only thing you have to do is bring back the things you’ve borrowed in a timely manner so other people can enjoy it too — and where people actually do it?

The public library is a phenomenally large undertaking, and I’m always in awe that those crazy bastards not only managed to pull it off but also to make it seem so normal and everyday that people actually take the things for granted.”

3. Thankful for that.

“Sewers.

Cities would not be possible without a good sewer system.

What’s even more impressive is that we had sewers in Ancient Rome. They have saved millions of lives of the years by having cleaner sanitation.”

4. They sure are handy.

“Clocks.

So much better than having to look at the sun!

Also led to navigation and voyages at sea.”

5. Cities would look different.

“The elevator.

No elevators would completely change the landscape of cities.”

6. Saves a lot of time.

“Copy, paste, and cut functions.

Sure we use them all the time and we don’t think about it, but there was a time when that wasn’t an option…just think about that. It’s fucking bonkers.”

7. Yes to this!

“Air conditioners are extremely important to populating the majority of the west coast.

Without it, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and large portions of California would be veritable wastelands.”

8. Imagine life without them…

“Glasses/contacts.

It’s nice being able to read and not get hit by cars.”

9. Taken for granted.

“Door knobs- super handy, but never really talked about.

Door knob broke and I lived in college without one for 2 weeks. Damn I took that invention for granted.”

10. Don’t take this for granted.

“Washing machines/dryers.

I don’t take those for granted. Imagine filling a washtub and scrubbing clothes with a bar of soap, then hanging all that to dry, no matter the season. Yuck.”

11. All hail pencils!

“The pencil.

It absolutely revolutionized how so much recording, design, and general progress was done, to the point that there were a number of countries that had strategic wad reserves (wad being the precursor to modern pencil lead).

It may be looked down upon now but has done so much good.”

12. They sure are comfortable.

“Shoes.

Do we all really appreciate to the full extent that we should how great shoes are? I mean, think about how painful some of the places we go would be if we didn’t have shoes.

I’m not denying the possibility that we would have evolved around a lack of shoes, but they’re just such a nice thing to have.”

13. Saved a lot of lives.

“Insulin.

The things diabetics had to do in order to stay alive before the advent of insulin is damn near inhumane, and they only lived til like 12 years old at absolute most.”

14. The stuff of magic.

“Glass.

Without it, optics of any kind are gone. Poor eyesight? Tough. Telescope to see the planets and moon? Gone.

And worst of all no microbiology, because no microscopes either. Glass is a fabulous thing so common we don’t even think about it. Its absence in China allowed Europe to get a jump in a whole range of technical areas.

Glass, the stuff of magic.”

15. Think about that one…

“The printing press.

When it was created, it allowed the transmission of knowledge at an unseen rate.

Before that, everything had to be written by hand and books were considered rare and expensive commodities only available to select few individuals.”

16. Makes a lot of folks happy.

“Condoms.

In 1872 the Welsh invented the condom, using a sheep’s lower intestine.

In 1873, the British refined the idea by taking the intestine out of the sheep.”

17. I want to ride my bicycle.

“Honestly, bikes are one of the most underrated thing.
