A Tumblr Writing Prompt About Monsters Provoked an Interesting Short Story

Getting an interesting prompt can really jumpstart your creativity if you’re a writer. You never know where it’s going to take you, and generally speaking, if you give the same prompt to a hundred writers, they would all come up with a totally different story.

Tumblr does regular writing prompts, but this one, about a kid who had sent all of the monsters assigned to lurk under her bed back crying, really inspired some (tragic) genius.

In it, a supervisor at the scary monster facility tells us about a little girl, Charlotte, who has vexed every monster that was sent to frighten her.

She describes a few of the monsters who failed, and then realizes that she’s the only monster left in the bag of tricks.

She goes herself, slithering under the bed and tipping her hat to the monsters lurking under Charlotte’s brother Daniel’s crib.

The monster tries to scare Charlotte, but she says she’s not afraid.

But as she starts to tremble, the monster realizes she is afraid…and that’s when they hear a man come home.

He’s loud, he’s stinky, he yells.

And as he stomps up the stairs, Charlotte climbs under the bed with the monster.

The man tries to grab Charlotte, but as the monster realizes what the little girl fears more than monsters under the bed, she slithers out to confront him herself.

She threatens the man, who runs off crapping his pants, and promises to return every night to keep Charlotte safe.

You never know what sort of stories you’re going to get when you assign a prompt. This one probably inspired some tales that were similar to Monsters, Inc.

This one, though, is terrifying and sad and poignant all at once – a real tribute to the power of stories to change the way we see things!

People Who Have Been in Relationships With Sociopaths Dish on What It Was Like

I’m not sure someone wakes up one day and thinks they’d like to date someone who will probably never be able to genuinely return their affections, but hey – you never know what you’re going to end up with when you swipe right, you know?

If you’re curious what it’s like to date someone with an antisocial personality disorder, well…these 16 folks are giving up the goods.

16. Be very, very careful.

There wasn’t any diagnosis, but I was casually with a guy who was sending up some pretty serious red flags, and it suddenly clicked that he was a sociopath. No empathy. Would absolutely lie to people’s faces. Huge plans that went nowhere. Nothing was ever his fault. Rules were for other people. When I drifted away from him or hung out with someone else, he would start putting lots of effort in again. And of course there was the cheating, lying, etc etc.

Luckily for me, I had recognized it early, and I realized I needed to be carful about how I went about detaching myself from him. So here is what I did, and hopefully it can help someone: I never actually broke things off with him or told him we were done. Obviously this only works if you’re casual, but maybe some variation could work. So an example would be that when he asked me for something, I knew he wanted it right then. So whenever he contacted me to ask for something I’d say “sure, that sounds great! I get off of work in 3 hours and I’ll come right over with (whatever he wanted) after that!” He’d say no, never mind. I’d act like I was disappointed about it, so he thought he had successfully ‘punished’ me. He thought I was still on the hook. I’d do this over and over until he stopped thinking of me as someone he could get things from. It took a while and a lot of acting upset when he would berate me or snap at me (I specifically remember sitting in his room while he yelled at me about where I put my purse down thinking “okay remember Vi, this is very upsetting. Look sad…”) but it did work without him going to any extremes. And we lived in the same building, so it was hard to just avoid him altogether.

Obviously your mileage may vary.

15. Like a light switch flipped. Chills.

I had a friend who married one. He changed 100% the night they got married. He went from a nice normal guy to super cold. He moved her out of state, got her pregnant, and had 2 other families on the side… she finally got out of it. Fucked her up for a long time

14. Remember you’re not the crazy one.

Yerp. By far the hardest experience of my life. Was with him for nearly a year, 6 years ago. Still working on recovery today. Tried to seperate me from my friends and family, made me feel responsible for him emotionally and financially. One of the first things he did after about a week of dating was convince me to pay for his $400 phone bill so he could have his phone switched back on and stay in contact with me. That was only the beginning. I lost all self worth, by the end I felt completely crazy. It’s insane what prolonged exposure to gaslighting will do to a person. I ended up dropping out of uni because he would sabotage me at every turn. I’ll never forget when I was working on a major project and he would keep walking past me calling me a fucking bitch and spitting on my piece. I was the only one working, and supporting two people on a shit hospitality wage is hard enough, then add in about a $300 a week weed addiction. If he didn’t have it, he would lose his shit, throw things, smash things etc. it was safer for me to keep him high, and in turn I smoked a shit load to escape the reality of the situation. I finally got out when I found that he had had prostitutes in the house (and in my bed). I finally opened up to my friends what had been happening and they got me out of there. It was fucked up, but I try to see it in a positive light. I’ve learnt and gained massive self esteem since this happened, and I find I can easily detect sociopathic and narcissistic personalities not people now. I still get super triggered by things, especially males yelling or showing aggression. I still get annoyed at myself for breaking down in these situations, but each time it happens I feel myself heal just that little bit. I see it as a wound reopening, but then the scar tissue builds up, making me stronger each time. Sorry for such a long rant, seeing this question hit me and feels good to get a bit of the stuff off my chest.

13. That makes it hard to get out.

A friend of mine dated a diagnosed sociopath, and she said it was frustrating because there wasn’t any logic behind her attraction to him. She realized he was not good to her, but she couldn’t stop going back to him. She described him as both the best and worst thing in her life when she was with him

12. Sometimes you don’t know until it’s over.

I don’t imagine that it’s common for sociopaths to get diagnosed as such. They tend to live in denial. They don’t think they have issues worth exploring.

Yes, I dated one, and it was the most traumatic experience of my life. By the time it was over (multiple years), I had no idea who he was. That’s what it’s like.

11. How on earth do you even date someone who talks about hurting animals?

He was a classic, into animal torture and stuff like that.

The way he got to talk endlessly about animal torture was by pretending he felt bad for it and looking for sympathy. “I can’t believe I did [x] and [y], I feel so bad” – he kept mentioning it so much. He thought it was funny when me or the baby had pain. At one point he told me that it was so long ago, that by now I should also think it was funny that he had gotten my blood and pieces of my flesh on him.

He said that me having empathy was proof that I was mentally ill, because “empathy doesn’t exist. You just learn in your teens that there’s consequences for being bad to other people”

He also said that “nobody cares about women. They’re like steak in the supermarket” and that when he saw a woman in the streets, he thought about raping them.

He is incredibly charismatic and the police said that I made a false report. He is still harassing me through the legal system.

10. The kids surely know they’re better off.

I didn’t graduate but I studied psychology and this is exactly right. Very few sociopaths are ever officially diagnosed.

I was married to someone who I believe was a sociopath. My kids and I deal with PTSD (which I WAS diagnosed with) but are luckily finally away from it. It’s a fucking nightmare. We were together for 14 years and other than my kids, I lost everything. I didn’t fight as hard as I should have for more in the divorce because I just wanted it to be over with and to deal with him as little as possible. The best thing he ever did for our kids was remarry quickly and tell me he wanted nothing to do with them as long as they were with me.

9. Oh hell no you do not touch my dog.

My ex was never diagnosed formally, but often told me he was probably a sociopath. I think the charismatic tendencies is what really gets to me the most. I thought I was so special because he was so confident in himself. He could do no wrong, he always said everything with such confidence you felt stupid to question it. I was young and he was the first person to show interest in me that I thought was also really smart.

He killed animals too. Would often tell me about how he wanted to kill every species at least once. Fantasized about being able to kill someone. Beat my parents dog for months because he left food on the counter (which we said not to because the dog eats it) and when I threatened to break up with him if he didn’t stop beating the dog, he looked at the dog coldly and said, “If you break up with me over that stupid dog I’ll kill him,”.

I was so scared, so miserable. He isolated me away from all of my friends and family. Yet we would be able to see his friends and family. If I spoke about something, I would get yelled at on the way home. I would lock myself in the bedroom to avoid him yelling at me… but he would break lock just to yell at me more. Everytime I tried to break up with him it was, “I’ll kill myself,”, “I’ll kill the dog,”, “you’ll never be able to find someone as good as me,”, “I’ll spend every last dime you have,”.

Cheated on me constantly. Blamed me for cheating. Was just so obsessed with himself. Turned into an entirely different person sexually, after a few years of us dating. He went from being dominating (which I liked) into actually wanting me to peg him, humiliate him, etc. I once role played about someone breaking in and tying him to the chair and forcing him to watch someone rape me. And he could. Not. Stop. Thinking about it. Everytime we did anything intimate it would turn into that.

He tried to convince me to let someone else fuck me in from of him- but I ultimately bailed out because I felt it was so wrong…. so he screamed at me in a bar because “any girl would be lucky to have their boyfriend say it’s okay to sleep with someone else,”

No. He had to pick out the person. He picked out what I would ware. How I would do my make up. What we ate. Everything. It came to a point where I threatened to break up enough where he finally found it hilarious and said “oh yeah? Think you can do it on your own? Then do it,” quit he job and stopped paying rent while still living under my roof for months. Drained my savings completely.

It’s been about 2 years since I was finally free and I still have dreams of him refusing to leave. I luckily have a gun in these dreams and I shoot the son of a bitch… and I stopped dreaming for awhile, but now he’s back in my brain, haunting me yet again.

8. Cheating seems to be a common thread.

Traumatic. I’m in therapy, but I’m scared of people now. I don’t know if I want to get married or have kids.

I beat myself up for it because there were SO MANY SIGNS he was a sociopath. But I still wanted him. Even after a few years we first broke up.

I ended up catching herpes.

He never cared about me and only cared about himself. He used me. I get really mad at myself when I think about it.

Even typing this out my anxiety is slightly hitting me.

I learned that I was in love with the idea of being in love and that my self-esteem was so low.

It’s probably going to be a long time before I trust people again. One of my biggest fears is falling into that again. Even worse, not leaving.

I’m thankful that I have family and friends so that helps me. I don’t feel alone. I feel love all the time.

7. They like to isolate their victims.

My ex from college was also never officially diagnosed but admitted to me the last time we ever saw each other he thought he might be and a relative who is capable of making such a diagnosis said his behavior sounds just like it.

It started out normal, he never seemed violent and never really got physical but he seemed to enjoy playing with people. On many occasions he would offhandedly mention in a bragging way how he used to hurt people violently as a child (paired with stories of smashing large objects into kids head or even pushing another boy off the top of some closed bleachers and breaking his arm) but he had since mastered how to break people with words. He lied to everyone constantly about everything. I have no idea who he was because as the relationship came to a close it became clear every character trait he had was carefully crafted to appeal to others. He lied about his job, finishing college, things he had done. He also lied about the most random things or just, hiding information like being extremely allergic to soy for years because he “didn’t want others to know his weaknesses”. He told me a fake middle name.

He also isolated me from all my friends and family by just, always spending time with me to the point of it being borderline stalkerish. By then though I was in too deep and didn’t have a support network and couldn’t get him to leave me alone. I would try to break up with him and he would tell me no, refuse to leave my dorm (he kept getting in despite not having a key) and sit outside my work to the point where I didn’t get my contract renewed (well, I’m not sure but I think it was a factor). It didn’t help he would have periods of being the kindest person ever, often before disappearing for long periods of time.

I had an epiphany last week about his cycle. He would set up a date, not show, ghost me for days and later weeks (and at one point two months) and use his health problems and bad family situation to make me crazy anxious all of the time, never knowing when he would next cut me off. The only time I didn’t feel anxious was when I was him like how some drug addicts keep using not because they want to but because of how bad they feel if they don’t. Isolate, manipulate, force dependency. And he was had such a great persona that when I did reach out to people they would tell me to stay.

It finally ended after two and a half years when he told me he fantasized about the many ways he would murder me because I wasn’t his I wouldn’t be anybody’s. I did better in school, work, and health than I had in years and got off all my meds because it turns out I didn’t have depression and anxiety I just had this toxic tumor of a person leaching my life away.

6. Gaslighting 101.

I was a married to one. It was traumatizing. We had a child and he cheated while I was pregnant with a woman I specifically said “I don’t trust her, please avoid being alone with her” when she joined my group. (Other friends basically invited her in). He was verbally and mentally abusive. He told me no one would want me because I was a young single mom so I may as well come home and just let him cheat with whoever he felt like cheating with. I moved across the country to escape his insanity.

The best way I learned to deal with him is to ignore him and not give a shit. It messed with his ego big time. He really doesn’t know how to deal with someone who actually gives zero shots about him. He would try to tell me about whatever was going on in his life and I’d say “Why are you telling me this? I don’t care. Don’t speak to me unless it’s about our son.”

He kidnapped my child during a visit. Because our divorce was final in our home state, nothing could be done. It took me two years of fighting to win full sole custody of my son who is now grown and doesn’t have much to do with his dad.

There is of course a lot more to the story. Psychological warfare and such. He tried to make me think I was going crazy when I started to become suspicious. He tried to torture me for 18 years. I haven’t spoken to him in 5 years and I feel free. He has been told if he so much as tries to speak to me at events for my son (Graduation, college graduation, military basic training graduation) that I will walk away. I have nothing to say to the man and he has nothing to say to me. My son learned on his own what type of person his dad is and is remarkably well adjusted and full of empathy.

5. His mother tried to warn her.

Yes. He admitted his diagnosis proudly. At least to me. He was very troubled. I was only with him 8 months. But those 8 months were the worst of my life. He seemed happy to discover i didn’t have stable housing. Asked if id like to move in. I said no. So he started causing problems with the people i was crashing with. I didn’t realize this til later that he was the one that got me kicked out.

Once i had no choice but to stay with him, hotels or the streets. He laughed and said hes breaking his lease. Maybe if i did what he said faster, id be able to stay. But that i could sleep in his basement. He would do weird shit like that. Making me wait outside of bars, his job, his friends houses was a big thing hed make me do. Especially if the weather was poor.

When he drank it was even worse. Id sleep in the bathroom if he was on liquor to get away from him. If i didn’t, hed strangle me when he blacked out. Hes wanted for killing a girl in another country now. No clue where he is but ill randomly get contacted by him. Its been years but he still contacts me. All he says is “i love you”. Once he got into my email and changed my name to “i love you”. I know 100% its him.

Ive seen and been through a lot of fucked up shit in my life. It is what it is. But that man takes the fucking cake for the most awful experience in my entire life. There are people i meet or see on tv that have the same exact look in their eyes or voice pattern as him, despite looking nothing like him. I avoid those people like the plague or grande to turn the tv off. Its like they over enunciate certain points of words yet have a monotone voice. The letter t especially. Like they’re parroting a human. Not actually one

One thing he always did was watch you tube videos and practice in the mirror on how to look happy, sad, concerned. It was insane. Everyone thought he was the greatest guy on earth. His mother tried to warm me that he’d kill me. Fucked up.

4. Hopefully that’s far enough.

Was married to one for 4 years. Definitely would not repeat. The level of delusion is unreal– and trying to get him to understand someone else’s pain, trying to get him to see how his actions were fucked up– was like trying to force a colorblind person to differentiate red and green. His vast lack of empathy was unyielding. Not even his therapist could make progress, and requested to meet with me for help in getting through to him. He truly lives in a fictional world where he can do no wrong, and it’s fucking terrifying. I moved a thousand miles away first chance I got.

3. Everything was a lie.

Yes, I dated a narcissistic sociopath. It was terrible, and left permanent scars. It took time but I realize now that everything was a lie. Well, his name was correct – but what he thought, felt, did, his plans and his history – I know none of those things. He is a complete stranger and I never knew him at all.

I’m doing fine now, although once in a while I stop and shake my head because I feel so goddam dumb.

2. When his mask started to slip.

my first boyfriend told me on our first date that he was a sociopath and “i don’t feel anything but i sure know i like you” and because i was sixteen and naïve i completely fell for it. Cue being manipulated into sex, telling him i struggled with my relationship with food and body image only to be told i was “flabby” afterwards, and all the exhausting mind games. Even through all of that and more, i still utterly adored him and repressed all of my instinctual feelings that were telling me to leave, something i still feel dumb about. I honestly think i was just a toy for him to manipulate and hurt, something he made sure to tell me about after our relationship ended. The way his face would change from “loving” to like someone i didn’t know was kind of terrifying really. it all fucked me up pretty badly and i still find it hard to trust people

1. Nothing was real.

Fren, are you me? Quite literally EVERYTHING I knew about my ex was bogus. Even down to his birthday; which he blamed on an error at the DMV, which is inaccurate because they have you check your license before you leave (at least in our state).

Isolated me from my friends and family, yet we saw his all the time. Threw bitch fits if my parents came to visit for a weekend, to see their grandkids. When my grandmother passed, he sent me a barrage of texts accusing me of only going to her funeral to cheat on him. (But yet, when he left his Facebook page open, what did I find? At least three different girls sending him DMs.)

I could go on and on, but I won’t. I found out the truth, with cold hard evidence and court records to prove. He hasn’t seen my kids in 5 years; no phone calls, no cards on their birthday, no nothing. I have sole physical and legal custody and I prefer it that way. He’s since moved on to a new wife, has a new baby, and is a pastor. Lol. He would likely deny all of this or have a convenient (albeit flimsy) excuse for it.

I’ll see him in Hell.

I found this super interesting and also I am glad all over again to be done with dating.

If you have a story to add to this list we’d love to hear it!

People Share the Absolute Creepiest Things They’ve Seen While Driving at Night

I’ve always been creeped out by scary movies and true crime books and articles that revolve around driving at night in a lonely place.

Maybe it’s on a remote stretch of highway, or maybe it’s an old country road where there isn’t another person around for miles.

Either way, it’s scary stuff and it makes you think about what you’d do if you saw something strange on the road or you encountered a terrifying situation.

And those creepy things really DO happen out there on the highways and byways.

Here are some interesting stories from folks on AskReddit.

1. Road kill.

“A fucking owl standing on the carcass of a large buck in the mountains at 3-5am.

All you see as you approach are two glowing red orbs, then slowly a becomes huge dark form standing on the edge of the road with eyes of fire. Then you get close enough and this massive fucking owl just gives you the death stare as you go past. You realize it was just a large ass owl standing on the remains of fresh road kill.

Freaked me out for the rest of the dark part of the drive.”

2. Bad accident.

“I was following a grey Toyota Tundra in a massive blizzard through Montana on McDonald pass. He was going pretty quick most of the way but must have been unfamiliar with how steep the final few miles are.

He got away from me as I slowed down to about 35. Not 5 min later I passed his tire marks in the fresh snow that went off the side of the mountain. Pulled over and looked down to see his truck upside down and on fire about 300 yards down.

Called 911. He didn’t die but was burnt up pretty bad. Sad and scary and don’t go 50 in the snow just because you have a truck or 4wd!!!”

3. Scooters.

“I had just finished driving for Uber and was driving down the access road to my home around 3am when I saw a body lying completely lifeless next to one of those motorized scooters.

I pulled over and flagged down his buddies who were drunk and kept going without realizing their friend was lying on the ground. Ambulance arrived and took the kid away, but I never came to find out if he made it.

F*ck those scooters man.”

4. Freak out!

“Not me but a friend.

After dropping me off at my house around 2 am, my friend calls me and tells me to pick my doors. He said he saw a man standing in the middle of the road and that as he passed him the man kept staring through him. Not at him really, but like their was something behind him in his back seat. He also said he could barely make out anything about the man other than his large eyes and trench coat.

What really terrified me is that this happened on a street that only my family lives on and no one would have been out that night. Also we’re a solid mile and a half from the nearest neighbor. Freaked me the hell out.”

5. Poor animal.

“A dead, butchered horse laying in the road. Someone had completely skinned and butchered a horse, took the choice pieces of meat, and just dumped it on the highway.

I almost crashed into it.”

6. Don’t pick him up.

“3am on a lonely road and I was the passenger. An old man only wearing a bra, panties and high heals was casually walking down the road.

My friend who was driving didn’t believe me and went back around. Sure enough, he saw him and we were like WTF.”

7. Better safe than sorry.

“I was on I-70 in Colorado going towards Utah, pulled over at a gas station at 8pm. Fueling up I noticed a couple of attractive women pumping gas, on the other side of the pump was the man in his late 40s, just staring at these young women without notice of anything else going on around him.

I walk inside to go grab some food for the next few hours of driving, when I come out I see both the younger women’s car and the older man’s truck are gone. I decided to hang out at the gas station for the next hour to catch a little sleep before hitting the road again.

After driving for a few hours (I was speeding heavy) I pull over at yet another gas station, the young women are there getting gas and eating some food on a picnic table. Looked like they had been there for a while. I didn’t see any sign or the man in the truck but can’t say I was looking very hard for it. Well here is where it got creepy as hell….

Can’t say I didn’t stare at them a bit, I mean they were good looking women. As I am watching them leave I see in the next parking lot over some headlights turn on and it’s the same man as before…. He leaves when the women leave once again.

Okay that’s a bit weird but could just be a coincidence as there weren’t many places to pull over. I leave a few minutes later and catch up to them…now this guy is riding there ass with his high beams on.

I decided to slow down and stay a distance behind the truck. 10 minutes or so later the women pull over once again to most likely get this guy off their ass…

With a sign of relief the truck keeps going and I continue on my way. About 1 mile down the road the guy just pulls off to the side of the highway…. So I pull off a mile or so down the road again.

Sure enough the women drive by and the guy is still following them. At this point we are out in the middle of nowhere and too many coincidences have happened. I called the cops to alert them and about 15 minutes the cops pulled the guy over.

I could have just seen too many horror movies that started like this and over reacted but ya never know. Better safe than sorry.”

8. That’s terrifying.

“Driving down a 2 lane divided highway. I came up to a couple semi sand went into the left lane to pass. I did a shoulder check to get back into the right lane when I saw headlights in front of me.. in my lane. The car was going the wrong way.

I managed to swerve into the ditch, felt like i was mere centimeters from death. Thought my wife’s scream would be the last thing I ever hear… And I never want to hear it again. The semis I passed all pulled to the shoulder to come check on us. Didn’t see the car anywhere.. I think they just kept going.

Had to pull into a gas station after and collect myself.”

9. On a dark road…

“A hitchhiker almost leaping out in front of my car on a dark forest road late at night. The woman literally popped out of nowhere. Had to drift into the oncoming lane. Read a police report that she ended up getting hit  minutes after I drove by. She was intoxicated and running  from the police. Pretty f*cking creepy.

I hope she’s alright. I can’t imagine what the driver that hit her was thinking.”

10. OH MY GOD!

“When I first started learning to drive I was working for my dad, and one day after work he asked if I wanted to drive home, I was like alright! So I got on the highway headed for home, and while driving, I looked in the rearview and a guy on a crotchrocket was coming up behind me, I thought nothing of it I was sure he would pass or slow down.

I look ahead again and a few moments later I hear this sound, like metal scraping against the ground. I look around and then look back into the rear view, and the bike was on its side, spinning down the highway, and behind it I could see the biker on his back, legs and arms flailing kind of like a baby on its back in a crib, then I watched as he dissapeared under the vehicle behind him.

I was so freaked out driving after that I didn’t want to drive for weeks following the incident. Then eventually got over it. Still I can see the guy in my mind just sliding along the ground flailing about then being swallowed under another car.”

11. Scary stuff.

“I was driving on the expressway around 2am and a semi hit a car and it went into the median. The car basically folded into itself and was beyond smashed. I can’t imagine that person survived.

It was incredibly sad and terrifying to see.”

12. About to get jacked.

“I was a very young woman driving home after clubbing, about 2 am through Hollywood. I was pulling up to a stop sign on Cahuenga, about 3 blocks from Hollywood Blvd., when a bunch of guys begin to casually stroll onto the crosswalk, coming from both sides.

I hit the gas and ran the stop sign without even thinking. They cursed and ran after me, but those boys were ready to jack me. My instincts took over before I even realized what was happening.”

13. Close call.

“Driving home one night from my fiancé’s house, normal night on the Florida highway.

It’s pretty dark, not too many lights, cruising at around 75 headed over a slight hill, just big enough that you can’t see the other side.

Get to the top and start making my way down the hill, and very suddenly in my headlight view I get a giant construction vehicle with all of its lights TURNED OFF, AND PARKED IN THE LEFT LANE OF THE HIGHWAY.

I really, seriously, pray to god that no one hit that parked construction vehicle (it was one of the ones that digs up dirt I think?) on the highway that day. I very, VERY narrowly avoided smacking right into the back of that thing.

I don’t know how the Cherokee I was driving at the time handled the sharp turn I made into the right lane to avoid the vehicle. Needless to say I was very nearly dead.

Immediately called Florida highway patrol and told them about it. I hope they got to it before someone got hurt, and I REALLY hope someone at that construction company lost their job. Because they could have killed multiple people.”

14. Funny/scary.

“Scariest and funniest at the same time.

I was working at a restaurant as a cook. We did full menu till 11:00 PM, then apps and burgers till 1:00 AM. I tended to pull the solo night shift, because I would walk out the door at 1:05 AM and the kitchen was stocked, clean, and perfect.

It was a long night. Stupid FoH kept sending back food orders after 1:00 AM, I didn’t leave till 2:00 AM. 30 minute drive home, and I was exceptionally tired.

I lived in the boonies of Wisconsin, at the time. A good 5km outside of town, which was 500 people, 2 churches, and 9 bars. I hit the little 24/7 truckstop just at the edge of that town for some munchies and smokes, and made the final trek home.

Encountering deer was not uncommon out there, so I was going slow. When what appeared before me, to my tired eyes, was a monster.

It had a huge, round body. This crazy long neck, a pointy head, and only 2 legs. Right in the middle of the road. Scared the ever loving fuck out of me in that state.

Thankfully, it stood there for a second. Brain re-engaged. It’s an ostrich. Ok, not a monster, heh, just… an…

What the fuck is an ostrich doing wandering around in Central Wisconsin?!?

I looked at it, it looked at me. I blinked. Nope, still there. Pretty sure it’s real. Finally, it trundled off into the forest.

What.

I grabbed my cellphone, and called the tiny little police station in town (non-emergency number).

“So… I’m really tired, so please laugh at me and tell me to go home and sleep and ignore the call… but I’m pretty sure I just saw an ostrich on Highway xx just outside $town.”

She started laughing hysterically, then assured me that:

No, I’m not hallucinating.

There’s an ostrich and emu farm on the other side of town, guy raises them for the kitch places in town for meat.

Some drunk driver felt that “turns are for pussies”, went up, over the berm, through the fence, and through most of the barn.

There’s still 4 animals, including the one I just spotted, unaccounted for.

Where are you exactly, and which way did it go so we can round it up?

I gave her the info, finished the last few miles home, and died in bed. Wild night, man.”

15. This is crazy and sad.

“Someone I knew locally came across a jeep that had just crashed into the ditch on a highway at night, flipped on it’s top, wheels still turning kind of thing.

He was the first on scene so called 911 and ran down into the ditch. The driver, who was badly mangled, had been tossed from the car and was dying. This guy held him and the driver died in his arms.

The weirdest part of it all was that he found out the next day that it was his cousin, but he hadn’t been able to recognize him.”

Shudder…

Now we want to hear your stories!

People Discuss Advice They Disregarded as Useless Until They Actually Gave It a Shot

Imagine that! Actually listening to peoples’ advice and trying it out!

Who would’ve thought?

I have to admit that I’m guilty of letting advice from people go in one ear and out the other sometimes, but I’m working on it, okay? So get off my back!

AskReddit users shared their own stories about advice that they ignored for a long time but were pleasantly surprised to discover actually works.

1. It’ll be fine.

“This too shall pass.

On those days when I just feel like I can’t take it I think of that, and I know tomorrow will be different.

Someone once told me, “tomorrow may not be better, but at least it’ll be different.”

In a strange way that too is comforting.”

2. It worked!

“My therapist told me the next time I’m going to have a panic attack to just give in and tell myself it was ok to have one.

I told him he was crazy. After a couple tries it started working to my amazement. I haven’t had a panic attack in 3 years.”

3. It’s good for you.

“Keeping my shoulders back.

It was a suggestion I saw for preventing panic/anxiety. Idk what it is, but when your shoulders are in that position it gives some strange feeling of control.

I also read somewhere that during panic attacks the body basically wants to curl into fetal position for protection, so I feel like focusing on keeping your arms down and shoulders back is a conscious way to go against that and stay grounded in reality.

Works for me, could work for you too.”

4. A good idea.

“TheForest app.

It grows a tree for up to 2 hours and during that time, you can’t access any apps you think will distract you. If you wanna open a distracting app, you’d have to kill your tree. All your trees, dead or alive, appear in a little forest.

I have always had trouble motivating myself to focus on homework and not look at Reddit/YouTube, but this app is just enough guilt to not open them. I haven’t killed anything yet and I’m surprised at how much I can care about a small virtual tree.

People told me about it and I just completely assumed that I’d never use it or it wouldn’t work for me considering how distractible I am, but it works wonders.”

5. Father knows best.

“My dad always told me ‘Ask anyway, the worst they can say is no’ when buying something or when I needed something from another person.

Seemed stupid to ask if I was sure they would say no but I was also a socially anxious kid. Turns out that advice has helped me with school, with raises, with people in general, with plans with new friends…”

6. Listen up.

“”There’s what you need, there’s what you want, and there’s what you can’t afford.”

My Dad says this all the time, and I never though of it as useless–I just never used it. Now I have, and my money is far easier to manage.”

7. I’m gonna try this!

“Putting cold water on freshly shaved skin will make it so you don’t get ingrown hairs.

Some of the best advice I’ve ever received.”

8. Just get started.

“Once begun is half done.

I am a terrible procrastinator by nature. I have totally done the “well now it 5:02 so I have to wait until 6:00 to start cleaning” and I like making things seem like so much work that I can’t possibly do them unless I take time off of work.

In reality if you just start a project without thinking about it you can get everything done in like fifteen minutes  a day and it’s never really that bad.”

9. Get flossing!

“”Your gums bleed when you floss because you don’t floss enough”

Turns out if you floss enough, your gums won’t be inflamed so they don’t bleed when you floss.”

10. Stop “what if’ing.”

“Don’t suffer future pain.

In other words, worrying about all the stuff that could happen stops you from doing things and worse, turns potential pain into actual worry and mental pain.”

11. Works wonders.

“Exercising helping with depression and anxiety.

It’s not a cure all and I needed to be on meds to get to the point where I could do it, but it really does help me. I’ve been off my meds now for over a year (under doctors supervision don’t stop taking your meds unless you run it by your doctor) and when I can’t exercise for a few days, I can feel the depression and anxiety coming back.

Now instead of going through a million things I did wrong in my head, I run for 3 miles or lift some heavy shit.”

12. Always!

“Cleaning your house before leaving for more than 5 days.

Nothing is better than coming to a clean house.”

13. Lo and behold…

“Fans on my old MacBook died. Saw a YouTube video that said to simply take your fist and bang on the part of the computer that housed the fans.

Thinking it was a troll, I gave it a shot out of pure frustration, and lo and behold, they purred back to life and I never had another issue with them for the rest of the time that I owned that computer.”

14. Relieve that tension.

“Unclench your jaw, open your hands, drop your shoulders, and breathe in.”

15. Bribe yourself.

“Bribe yourself with fun things to do the not so fun things.

Today I was tired after work but got a little care package in the mail, so I made myself go on the 2.5 mile run I didn’t want to do before I could open the package.

Now I’m refreshed and happy that I did the thing I was pseudo dreading, and I have a fun care package to open.”

16. Put that thing away for a while.

“Not taking your cellphone into bed with you.

After awhile you will sleep much easier without the distraction and blue light shining straight into your eyes before bed.”

Now it’s your turn.

In the comments, tell us about some advice that turned out to be good once you actually followed it.

Please and thank you!

This is How Palm Oil Damages the Environment and Why You Should Care

It can be tiring to learn about everything we do and use on a daily basis that harms the environment. It’s a lot – sometimes it can seem like there’s nothing we can keep if we want to be responsible global citizens.

There are plenty of alternatives, though, and some problems are too big to ignore, and there are a few arguments that palm oil is one of them.

There are all kinds of vegetable oils available at the store – olive (which I guess is actually a fruit), vegetable oil, canola oil, palm oil – as well as oils from seeds.

Palm oil isn’t as popular as a cooking oil as the others, but with its high saturated fat content, and it’s complete lack of trans fats, make it popular with food manufacturers, according to a Guardian report.

“In the 1960s, scientists began to warn that butter’s high saturated fat content may increase the risk of heart disease. Food manufacturers, including the British-Dutch conglomerate Unilever, began to replace it with margarine, made with vegetable oils low in saturated fat.”

Oil palm trees are prevalent in Southeast Asia, where they were transplanted from their native West Africa in the mid-19th century.

Now, the region exports over 75% of the world’s palm oil, which is used in thousands of packaged foods and by big-name brands like Luna, Pepperidge Farm, Little Debbie, McDonald’s, and Quaker. Two-thirds of all palm oil goes into food.

Manufacturers like it because it gives foods like chocolate, cookies, and ice cream a smooth, creamy texture – there’s a good chance it’s also lurking in your sliced bread.

Artificial beauty ?✨ . Palm forests held the most symmetric layout I’ve ever seen in nature, except, it wasn’t natural. These vast acres were created by cutting down the forest to create palm oil farms. There’s nothing natural about what we saw, rather, just another example of exploiting the environment and developing countries. Best way to help stop these farms from continual expansion? Be a conscious consumer and reduce your palm oil use. . You’ll also find it in soaps and lipsticks, says The Guardian.

“Unlike other oils, it can be easily  and inexpensively ‘fractionated’ – separated into oils of different consistencies – which disposes it to multiple uses.”

The fact that it holds color, it doesn’t melt at high temperatures, and is completely tasteless doesn’t hurt, either.

It’s easy to see why businesses and consumers love palm oil, but according to the World Wildlife Fund, there are far more reasons to cut way back on its production and use.

“Palm oil grows in tropical rainforests, and the uncontrolled clearing of these forests for conventional palm oil plantations has led to widespread loss of these irreplaceable and biodiverse-rich forests.”

Between the years of 1990 and 2008, palm oil production was responsible for 8% of the world’s deforestation.

HOW YOU CAN AID WILDLIFE CONSERVATION FROM YOUR HOME: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ♥ Be conscious of what you buy! This applies to food, fashion, beauty, physical products and more. Are they contributing to deforestation, death, pollution etc? (Make sure you think about Indigenous communities and local people too) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ? Avoid unsustainable Palm Oil (I have an entire blog post on this – link in my bio)! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ? Plant native flowers, trees and shrubbery in your backyard to help wildlife and bees thrive! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ?On hot days, put out a shallow water dish (in a safe place) for thirsty wildlife to access. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ? Be cautious of what you feed birdlife — human foods can harm their stomachs and encourage bad behavior. Avoid it all together if not necessary, and DO NOT feed other animals either! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ? Palm oil plantations also steal habitat from many endangered species, like Sumatran tigers, Sumatran rhinos, and orangutans. The tigers, in particular, have dwindled to just 400 animals in the wild.

In 2003, the World Wildlife fund established a group called the “Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil” with the goal of encouraging the industry to work together to find ways to stop the production from damaging important ecosystems. The European Union joined the fight in 2013, changing their labeling laws so that concerned consumers can easily choose products that don’t contain palm oil.

If you’re moved to do the same, there are consumer sites like Products Without Palm Oil that can help you make good choices on the products you buy, from food and coffee to personal are items. There are plenty of companies who make delicious products without using palm oil, thank goodness, and I was personally most relieved to see Ben & Jerry’s on that list.

A world without Half Baked is not a world I want to see, although I suppose I could have done it for the tigers.

Carole Baskin would be so proud.

A Sweet Little Girl Taught Her Cats How to Draw Flowers and It’s Adorable

We all love a good cat video, and mix that with a cute little girl? You’ve got internet gold that won’t be slowing down, traction-wise, for awhile.

And honestly, y’all…I think this girl is a witch or something, because who can get cats to comply in this manner without drugging them? If you can even drug a cat, which mostly you can’t because they will not take their medicine?

Also, as the mother of two toddlers, I just want to know how she got these cats to sit still at a table for that long.

She’s teaching the cats to draw a flower.

The cats are sitting upright, in their chairs, papers and drawing implements at the ready, and appear to be listening intently to the entire lesson.

You. Guys.

Some of the comments are as cute as the video, like this one that gives hilarious voice to the cats.

And this one, that pointed out we never get to see the cats draw the flowers! Talk about a cliffhanger!

This person echoed my sentiment (at least I know I’m not alone!).

You know they will, too. Not a doubt in the mind of a cat-lover anywhere.

I mean, it’s definitely both.

Have you ever seen cats sit and listen like this? Is she a cat whisperer? If I didn’t see them move and their ears change directions here and there, I’d think they were stuffed!

I don’t know if she can teach them how to draw flowers, but this little chickadee definitely has some kind of future working with animals.

If she can get cats to do this, she can literally do anything.
