Thoughts From People Who Have Been Told They’re About to Die

Nobody likes to think about death even when it seems like a far away concept; something you likely have decades to think about before you truly have to face it. Imagine the mental burden of dealing with the thought of death when you know that it’s much, much closer. When it’s less of an abstraction and more of an oncoming train, how do you prioritize your thoughts and your grief and make use of the time you have left?

These posts are real, anonymously submitted confessions from people who likely don’t have much time left.

A New Baby Shark Series Will Be on Nick Jr.

Baby Shark is the song and the phenomenon that just won’t go away. Typically, the things that our kids love and that get stuck on an endless loop in our heads are, thankfully, fleeting.

Not Baby Shark. The song, the video, the dance…it’s been awhile.

And now that it’s also going to be a television show on Nick, Jr. (and now that Nick, Jr. has been added to YouTubeTV), it looks like the whole phenomenon is here to stay.

The show, tentatively titled Baby Shark’s Big Show!, follows Baby Shark and his best friend William on adventures around their home, Carnivore Cove. They meet new friends, and yes, sing new, original, possibly catchy songs.

Ramsey Naito, an Executive Vice President at Nickelodeon, said…

“Having the opportunity to dive deeper into this incredible world and create all-new storylines has been extremely exciting, and our head of preschool Eryk Casemiro and his team can’t wait to help grow the Baby Shark universe and fanbase with an amazing new series that captures the heart and soul of this property.”

The first order is for 26 half-hour episodes. The series will be geared toward preschool-ged kids and will kick off with a holiday-themed episode in December of 2020.

Are you excited to check this out with your kids? Will they be watching it alone?

Will you ban the show and Nick Jr. from your television for daring to bring this song back into your home and your head?

We want to hear your reactions in the comments!

8 Philosophical Thought Experiments That Are Easy to Understand

Many of us love philosophy and can sit around the table for hours discussing the events of the world and thought experiments.

The idea of combining philosophy with illustration is appealing, and many of you will probably enjoy this project that philosopher and artist Helen De Cruz put together of 8 illustrated philosophical thought experiments.

As Helen explains, many philosophers use thought experiments to contextualize and reveal the intuitions behind their ideas. Thought experiments are basically like short stories that help give meaning to ideas that can be difficult to grasp.

See if you can figure out how each of these thought experiences work!

1. The missing shade of blue

In this thought experiment, the man pictured has seen every color except for one specific shade of blue. However, if he’s seen other gradations of blue, he could arrange them in his mind and understand that one is missing.

The question: will the man be able to fill in the missing color using only the power of his imagination?

The story behind it:

Philosopher David Hume came up with this thought experiment while developing his idea that people learn about the world by experiencing it. This experiment is meant to be a counterexample of his argument.

If we really all learn about the world through our experiences, then the man would not be able to fill in the missing shade.

However: most of us can fill in the shade! But it might not be as easy as you suspect.

2. The experience machine

Here’s another one for you!

What if you had a device that could make any experience you want to happen? That’s what the experience machine is.

The experience machine can convince you that whatever you want is really happening. If you want to believe you are racing a horse, you will be. Amazing!

But the reality is that you are floating in a tank with electrodes attached to your brain.

The question is: would you plug into the experience machine for the rest of your life? You would be happy, but you would also be “living” a life that doesn’t really exist.

The story behind it:

Philosophers have asked themselves a key question for thousands of years. What is happiness? Is happiness more than just experiencing pleasure?

The belief that pleasure alone is all you need to be happy is known as hedonism, and the experience machine offers a direct challenge to hedonism.

If pleasure was the direct line to being happy forever, just about everyone would plug themselves in. But it’s not, and we know it.

The philosopher Robert Nozick believed this is because humans know that we want more than just pleasure in our journeys. We have dreams and goals that go far beyond anything being plugged into a machine can offer us.

3. The child at the well

The philosopher Mèng kē, or Mengzi, was a Confucianist who is widely celebrated as the “Second Sage” (second only to Kongzi, also known as Confucius).

Mengzi believed that compassion is a fundamental trait in humans, and he used this thought experiment about a child who is about to fall into a well to prove his belief.

Nearly all of us who see this image will immediately feel worried about the child, right? That’s a dangerous situation!

We wouldn’t feel alarmed and worried because we want someone to tell us we’re a good person for being worried about the child — we would feel worried because the child could get hurt, and others might think less of us if we didn’t try to prevent that from happening.

The story behind it:

Mengzi believed that all humans have four roots (or “sprouts”) that guide our morality.

The roots are ren (compassion), yi (rightness), li (ritual propriety), and zhi (wisdom).

While we each have these roots or sprouts inside of us, like any good gardener, we have to nurture them.

4. Sleeping Beauty

Many of us know the fable about Sleeping Beauty, right? In this thought experiment, the story has been modernized. Sleeping Beauty is participating in a research experiment, and she’s been put to sleep by the researchers.

Here’s how the experiment works: when Sleeping Beauty wakes up, she will be put back to sleep with a medication that will make her forget that she woke up in the first place. The researchers will toss a coin.

If it lands on tails, Sleeping Beauty will be awoken on Monday and Tuesday for a short while.

If the coin lands on tails, she will only be awoken on Monday.

And here’s the crux of the experiment: when Sleeping Beauty wakes on Monday without any idea what day it is, what proof does she have that the coin landed on heads?

The story behind it:

Many of us believe that the odds of the coin landing on heads is 1/2, which makes sense — there are only 2 sides to a coin.

However, philosopher Adam Elga, who specializes in game theory, would argue that Sleeping Beauty should believe there is a 1/3 chance that the coin landed on heads.

Why? Because she doesn’t know whether it’s Monday or Tuesday, so she likely believes it’s either.

When Sleeping Beauty wakes up, P(Tails and Tuesday) = P(Tails and Monday) = P(Heads and Monday), so the probability of each occurrence is 1/3.

5. Otto and Inga visit a museum

This is a pretty fun one! Otto and Inga want to go visit the Museum of Modern Art.

There’s a catch, though: Otto has Alzheimer’s, and he has a notebook he carries with him that will help him remember how to get to the museum. The notebook tells him that the museum can be found on 53rd Street.

Inga, however, can use her biological memory to recall the same information.

Many of us would understand that Inga has an intuitive, understood belief about where the museum is because she can recall it from her memory. Would we assume Otto has the same belief even though he uses his notebook?

The story behind it:

There is one big question being asked here. Do thoughts only happen in our brains, or do they also happen in the world?

In this experiment, both Otto and Inga have a tool that they use to retrieve information. Their tools work in the same way, but are they the same tool?

It can be reasonably argued that Inga’s belief about the location of the museum is no more or less useful than Otto’s belief, though one is based on memory and one is based on information in a notebook.

Both memory and the notebook are not fail-proof; Inga’s memory can be impacted by something like having a drink at lunch, and someone could steal  Otto’s notebook (or he could lose it).

6. The invisible gardener

Photo by Emiel Molenaar on Unsplash

Two partners or roommates have returned home and their garden is overgrown and neglected.

However, they notice that there are still flowers blooming, and one comments that someone must have been sneaking in and taking care of the garden. The other doesn’t agree.

They decide to ask their neighbors if anyone has been in the garden, but everyone says no.

So then they commit to learning about what happens to a garden when no one takes care of it.

The skeptical partner believes that their research proves there is no gardener, but the other partner believes the gardener is invisible but that there is evidence of this person’s presence that can’t be seen or heard.

How will they ever solve their disagreement?

The story behind it:

If you haven’t caught on yet, this experiment is definitely an analogy about whether or not God exists.

The skeptical friend is not a believer, and he doesn’t see a larger sense of design in the world around him.

The experiment forces us to ask ourselves: to what degree will we bend reality so that it can support (or refute) a belief in God?

There’s also a second question to ask: is the debate really about God, or is it about having two different ways to look at the world? I might see a garden, but you might see a wilderness.

7. The Russian nobleman

A young Russian nobleman is planning to split his estate among peasants instead of his family members, but he knows he is young and idealistic and he’s not sure if he will have the same ideals in his old age.

He decides to put his idealistic plan into a legal document and to place his wife in charge of revoking the plan.

He then asks his wife to promise that she will not revoke his plan even if she does change his mind.

He also tells his wife that the ideals are so important to him that “If I lose these ideals, I want you to think that I cease to exist.”

Fast-forward a few dozen years, and now the man is middle-aged and wants to revoke the documents. What choice does she have?

The story behind it:

This experiment calls into question the idea of personal identity. Is the middle-aged Russian nobleman the same man he once was?

Should his wife have to decide what to do, or should she be relinquished from the agreement? After all, if she has changed, hasn’t she?

8. The floating man

Photo by Alex Iby on Unsplash

Ibn Sina, or Avicenna as he is often referred to in the West, was one of the most important thinkers of the Islamic Golden Age.

He frequently debated the nature of existence. In this experiment, we imagine a man who is brought into the world as an adult.

The man just appears and has no memories of having lived any other part of his life.

The man is floating in the air with his eyes closed, he can’t hear a thing, and his limbs are spread out wide so that he cannot feel his own body.

With all this in mind, we now ask ourselves: is the man aware that he exists?

The story behind it:

Ibn Sina is asking whether our selves are the same as our bodies. The great philosopher did not believe that our bodies are the summation of ourselves.

If this were the case, the man would have some awareness of his body’s experience, and he would have memories as well.

Ibn Sina’s conclusion? Our awareness comes from our souls, not our physical experiences.

Those were pretty amazing, right? Don’t forget to share with your friends, and let us know which of the experiments is your favorite in the comments!

Dental Transformations That Blew Us Away

A smile can be the difference between confidence and being bullied, because children are terrible to each other for little to no reason. Many of us had braces, but there were many more whose parents couldn’t afford them and had to wait until they were adults to fix their own smiles.

And while maybe beauty shouldn’t matter so much, when it’s standing in the way of a person feeling good about themselves, it definitely does – which is what makes these 12 transformations so special.

12. What’s cute at 12 seems not so much later.

I’m sure her mom really tried, though.

12 vs 22. My teeth aren’t perfect yet (wish I’d worn my retainer!) but still thank you for braces and haircuts that are not by my mum! from uglyduckling

11. This is a RADICAL transformation.

I can’t imagine needing surgeries on my face.

November 2010 vs March 2020 – 4 years of braces, double jaw surgery and a whole lot of smiles later! from braces

10. Love her smile in both pictures, though.

I think most people feel like braces are worth the pain.

9. Braces don’t get enough credit.

They’re kind of a miracle.

Yesterday i got my braces off just in time for my 19th birthday. It’s amazing what 2.5 years of braces can do. from pics

8. When you feel like a totally new person!

That is the best feeling, isn’t it?

7. Before, during, and after…

She was always pretty but what a difference!

Definitely worth it✌? from braces

6. Some doctors are so good at their jobs.

This is a killer team!

This is what over 2 years of braces, wisdom teeth removal and 2 jaw correction surgeries looks like. (Me, 2017-2019) from PastAndPresentPics

5. Happier and more confident is the goal.

This is the best possible outcome for sure.

It’s the two year anniversary of when I got my braces on. Two weeks ago I got debraced. I am so much happier and confident with my new smile ❤ from braces

4. I’m sure this wasn’t without pain.

Her smile says she’s glad she did it!

13 months and a lot of powerchains later. from braces

3. Her teeth are gorgeous.

A++ work, orthodontist.

It was worth it from braces

2. Five years might seem like a long time…

But it’s a blink of an eye in the grand scheme of things.

About age 9 to age 21, I guess those 5 years of braces paid off from uglyduckling

1. Rocking the new haircut, too.

His smile is the best.

M/20/5’9’’ [137 lbs] 15 months. Left to right: Start Date: November 12th 2018. Finish date: February 27th 2020! Just wanted to say thank you from the bottom of heart for my orthodontist in helping me give something to truly smile about – a handsome, warm smile. ??? #bracesoff. from progresspics

I love all of these pictures!

Lin Manuel-Miranda’s Response to Why Disney Censored Lines From ‘Hamilton’

Hamilton has been nothing less than a sensation since it landed on Broadway more than five years ago. The cast, the music, the flipped lens of history, the racial diversity – it’s left audiences stunned and thrilled in all of the best possible ways.

Now, you may have heard that it’s available to see, with the original cast, on Disney+.

If you’ve been a fan before now, and have listened to the soundtrack (hundreds of times) or see a live performance (or three), you probably noticed that some of the lyrics were tweaked for Disney audiences.

And while some are miffed and offended that anyone – even Disney – dare lay a finger on a masterpiece, creator, writer, and lead actor Lin Manuel-Miranda had a bit of a different take on why he allowed some of his curse words to be edited.

He explains that of course, Disney wanted the movie to be not-R-rated, which meant only 1 f*ck is allowed. The original Hamilton has 3 f*cks.

Lin Manuel goes on to say he gives not only 1, but 2 f*cks so the kids can see the movie/musical.

And he tells you where it happens, but reminds us all we can sync up the album and sing along whatever lyrics we enjoy in the comfort of our own homes.

He reassured everyone that every last drop of historical goodness was included, so we were all basically foaming at the mouth when it dropped.

If you haven’t seen it yet, what are you waiting for?! Those f-bombs are fun but you’re not going to think it’s any less awesome without them!

Go now!

This is Why You Should Avoid TikTok, According to the Guy Who Reverse Engineered the App

If you use social media, you must be aware that none of them really have your best interests at heart, they’re all selling your information, and they would all send you straight down the river if they thought they could make a buck.

Facebook and Instagram have had their scandals, but according to a Reddit user who is also a senior software engineer with over 15 years of experience, they’re secure havens compared to Chinese-based TikTok.

In his post, he strongly recommends people avoid the app entirely, which is a bit concerning, given that it’s the 4th most popular free iPhone app available.

He starts out saying that the app is basically just a data collection server that pretends to be a social media app, and details all of the ways they collect information on their users.

The scariest part, for him at least, is how the app is programmed to block people trying to learn how it works, or trying to “debug” it so the data collection stops.

They’re leaking not only email addresses, but names and birthdays, too.

And, they have plenty of tricks up their sleeves to get people addicted/keep them on the platform.

Basically, they know exactly what they’re doing, and they’re barely trying to hide it from people who know where to look.

It’s not just business as usual, either.

And here’s your tl;dr.

Listen, I don’t have a TikTok because I’m old, but this has definitely convinced me that I don’t need one.

Do you or your kids have TikTok? Are you going to keep it? Tell us why or why not in the comments!

A Woman Wants to Know If She Was Wrong to Propose to Her Girlfriend at Her Homophobic Sister’s Baby Shower

A proposal is supposed to be a personal moment between two lovers. It’s about their future together and it’s not really about anyone else, but in recent years, the grand gesture has eclipsed the quiet one asking for somebody’s hand in marriage.

This woman decided to ask her girlfriend to spend the rest of her life together at her sister’s baby shower.

Her sister who she knew doesn’t really approve of her lesbian relationship.

Even though no one disagreed that her sister and family are sh*tty for not supporting her sexuality and her long-term relationship, everyone was also pretty much in agreement that someone else’s celebration is not the time to hog the spotlight.

Others pointed out that her now-fiancee also has reasons to be upset, seeing as her girlfriend used their special moment to get in a dig at her family.

While others pointed out that proposing in front of a crowd is a good way to pressure the other person into saying yes, and if it had happened to them, they would be having a serious chat with OP (original poster).

And we can all agree that rubbing something in your family’s face is not a good reason to propose at all.

And we’re all cringing just so hard, and we weren’t even there.

I’ve gotta agree with everyone on Reddit on this one – she’s definitely TA (The A**hole), and I’d hope her partner asks for some serious discussions before wedding plans proceed.

Hilarious Reactions to Chuck E. Cheese Going Bankrupt

I know it’s not funny that the current state of the world is forcing companies to declare bankruptcy, and that our kids might grow up without all of the wonders of the world that we did, blah blah blah, but that doesn’t mean humor isn’t still one of the best ways to cope.

A fact you’ll surely agree with me on after reading through these 15 hilarious reactions to people learning that Chuck E. Cheese, childhood staple and bane of parents everywhere, is struggling financially.

15. Just reminiscing about the good old days.

I mean, they weren’t great but they were better than this.

14. When you think about it that way, maybe this is for the best.

I mean. Who thought this branding was great?

13. It would be nice if we could be sure there were better days ahead.

Something tells me that’s just not true, though.

12. Perhaps this is truly when things went downhill.

Although kids love all “monies” it doesn’t matter the color.

11. Only $1? I thought it would be more, because no one eats the salad bar.

Salad bars are gross at the BEST of places, y’all.

10. Back in the 80s we ate creepy characters for breakfast.

This new rat looks too nice. He’s probably hiding something.

9. We reap what we sow, people.

But I mean, I think it’s clear Chuck E. Cheese doesn’t have a bangup marketing team.

8. Everyone already assumes it’s full of germs so there’s that.

He’s just saving America, one disgusting business at a time.

7. 2020 is determined to take it all away.

They can’t have Betty White. They just can’t.

6. They just might be the currency of our impending dystopia.

I mean, you never know.

5. No one in their right mind over the age of 11, anyway.

Which is maybe redundant?

4. This animatronic band was terrifying.

And also it plays at a local bowling alley so come to Kansas City.

3. Now there’s a rat-owned business I could get behind!

I’ll take the specialty, please.

2. American rats are always looking for handouts.

It’s sort of pathetic looking, isn’t it.

1. There’s nowhere to go but up.

I’m sure there will some day be another restaurant looking for a rat representative. Ahem.

Listen, I hate Chuck E. Cheese (although the addition of alcohol lessons my ire), but I still hope they pull through and I can teach my kids to play skeeball.

Parenting is one big contradiction after another, isn’t it?

People Talk About the Creepiest Thing That’s Happened To ThemAfter Midnight

My grandfather used to say two things: you can get twice as much done before noon as after, and nothing good ever happens past ten p.m.

The older I get, the more certain I am that he was right – and these 17 people, who have had some pretty creepy experiences, might agree with him, too.

17. Everyone has this first sleepover experience maybe.

When I was around 12 we had one of our first sleepovers where we dared to watch a pretty scary movie. I believe it was the “sixth sense” or something. We had one of those radio-controlled clocks that would start to adjust every night.

During the scene where the boy starts crying all of the sudden the clock starts to go nuts. Thats when we changed to Toy Story. But boy, I still remember that vividly.

16. I think I would have crapped my pants.

It was just after midnight one Friday night/Saturday morning and my wife and I were talking downstairs just about ready to turn in when the landline phone started ringing. My first thought was ‘oh god, something bad has happened for somebody to be calling at this time’.

I picked up the phone and saw on the display that it was showing my wife’s cell/mobile number. I turned to her and asked where her phone was thinking that she’d left it somewhere and somebody had found it and was calling us using it to say they’d found it (hadn’t quite thought in that second that they would need to unlock it). She said it was upstairs. A gave her a sought of withering Sheldon look and answered the phone.

I said hello but nobody answered so handed the phone to my wife and went upstairs looking for the phone. It was resting face down on the side of the bed. When I picked it up it was all lit up and showing that it was calling our landline!

So how did a smartphone unlock itself (with the correct security code), navigate to contacts, find our home number and call it on it’s own?

15. Probably just animals getting it on.

So, the other night I was watching tv with my cat around 2am, and I hear a sound that sounds like a woman being murdered. I’m looking around the house and stick my head out the door and can faintly hear it coming from a park/lake near my house. I was freaking out, but wanted to look on google and see if maybe it was an animal sound.

14. Definitely a ghost.

I studied in my research lab as an undergrad and sometimes very late at night (especially during finals week)

The research building itself was older and not renovated: more dimly lit, wooden surfaces and cabinets, dust, empty rooms from labs that moved out etc,l. We knew there was a mice/rat problem because there would be these weird scratching sounds or movement in the vents when it was quiet enough

Anyways, it must have been 3-4ish AM, I was the only one in the research building and inside the individual lab rooms when I was studying and suddenly some closed, packaged plastic (culture) flasks fell onto the ground from the shelves. It made a huge ass noise and it scared the shit out of me. I just logically attributed it to the rodents to try and focus on the final coming up. There was a weird uneasy feeling in the back of my mind, like something was wrong and I felt like I was alone in the back of a dark movie theater watching things from afar

I became paranoid because it was perfectly flat and not on the edge of the shelf. So I set them flat on the center of the table and looked around, went back to studying etc

Couple of moments later, the same exact noise happened. I for sure now figured it was the fucking mice near the original shelf but when I went into the attached research lab, it was the same exact flasks I purposely put on the middle of the table. I was so freaked out that I didn’t put the culture flasks back up and when I was getting my study materials, I couldn’t move as fast as I wanted to because I was so damn terrified.

Anyways I ended up trying to casually sprint to the 24 hour on campus library that night and the rest of finals week

13. This is so much nope.

Well the other night I was reading creepypastas on my phone and the front door handle started jiggling and the porch light came and i heard someone say shit and ran.

12. Or just a really intense cat lover.

More funny than creepy, but definitely odd. I was sitting on my apartment balcony about 2:30 AM last week, and one of my cats was chilling with me at the other end on the balcony railing. We’re on the 2nd floor, across from a very dark park, and the cats love sitting to watch the world go by.

Anyway, I’m sitting browsing Reddit and having a dart when I hear some little voice go “Mew!” At first, I thought it was the cat – but then I hear it again, this little “Mew! Mew mew! Psst!” and notice my cat is staring intently down at the road.

I lean forward to look down through my balcony slats, and some woman has stopped her car in the middle of the street, leaned out the window, and is meowing up at my cat on the railing.

I didn’t want to stand up and startle her so I just waited, and she sat there for five minutes mewing and trying to get his attention before speeding off. Very strange. Assume drugs were involved.

11. Put the ol’ ticker to the test.

It was around 5am when I watched a Video and the Knock Knock sound was playing in the back(its was really looud). I had my headphones on (on PC) and my window open (I live in the first floor). At first i thought my dad knocked on my door and was about to catch me at 5am at my PC, then the sound came from the other side and I thought some drunk people were trying to break into my room.

That was probably the scariest thing.

My pulse went nuts at that moment.

10. I would not have been able to sleep that night.

I was just chilling, lying in bed. The house is utterly silent. And then I hear a sharp, meaningful bang, as if someone just took their stick and tapped it on the ground. Not with incredible force, but enough to be heard. I froze up, but wrote it off. It sounded like it was coming from way downstairs, houses make noises, whatever.

Then I hear it again, this time closer in the kitchen. It sounded to me like a blind person tapping around, but only ever one tap. It happened a few times, sounding like it came from random rooms.

Then, tap. Directly outside my door. I was in high alert at this point, and my stairs up creak like a mother fucker. But I didn’t hear anyone come up. Just that tap. I nearly shit myself.

First and last time that’s happened.

9. It’s like he’s the neighborhood superhero.

I’m typically up to 0200 or 0300. My dog and my routine is to lap the neighborhood sometime between those hours so she can have a pee break.

I’ve seen teenagers making out.

Lovers sneaking out of neighbors houses when the other partner is away.

Drunk drivers hitting all sorts of things. Telephone poles seem to be a favorite.

Bears.

Drunks walking home from their night out. Who are awesome people be that type of person!

And the weirdest thing was coming around the corner and hearing a smoke detector going off. Narrowed it down to a house didn’t see anyone but smelled some smoke. I banged on the door no one answered. Called the fire department. They rolled in with one truck agreed smoke from that house. Banged on the door. No answer. Knocked down the door found the oven on smoking away and no one in the house. Turned out they left in a hurry forgot they had bread in the oven. Bought me a nice bottle of Scotch and the dog a new collar/some toys.

8. I might never put my back to a window again.

I’m a 911 dispatcher for a particularly rural area, and it’s not unusual to have a night with no real calls, and I work by myself. The room I sit in is relatively small with glass windows all around the front of it allowing me to speak to anyone who may come into the front doors. Most nights I’ll make myself a couch out of two office chairs so I can sit with my legs stretched, which causes me to be unable to see out those windows.

One night I hadn’t had a single call in the first half of the shift, but right around 2:30 a random call came in that I just told the guy the phone number he needed and shrugged it off. Something in me couldn’t seem to settle back down comfortably in my spot, so I instinctively checked behind me out those windows and nearly shit myself when I saw a man with a medical face mask on standing as close to our outside door as possible… Just looking inside… I gasped and stared at him a solid minute before coming to my senses. I picked up the phone and waved it at him, because there’s a massive sign outside that says dial 911 for assistance. He just looked at me funny, and then turned to leave. I waved and held up a hand to tell him to wait and called one of the medics that stays in the building and asked him to go and see. Turns out the guy was super high on who knows what, but absolutely convinced he had covid-19, his temp was completely normal.

I stay pretty on edge now and check behind me A LOT more often now.

7. That awkward moment when no one speaks.

I live in a second floor apartment. My bedroom is actually supposed to be the living room and my bed is against the wall opposite the front door. Usually I keep the door locked but this particular night, about two weeks ago, I forgot to lock up after a friend left. Anyway, I’m in bed reading a news article at around 2 in the morning and I hear my doorknob turning and some guy I’ve never seen before opens the door and sees me there looking at him.

He just stands there for a couple of seconds looking just as surprised as I was when I finally loudly and assertively, to the best of my ability anyway, ask “Can I fucking help you?” The guy says “Shit, sorry. I didn’t know anyone was home.” As if that makes any difference. He just closes the door and I hear him walking down the stairs and the front door open and close. I look out the window and he’s just walking down the street like nothing happened.

6. Welp there goes that friend.

Was making some noodles at 3 in the morning when the house phone rang. I let it go to the machine and it was actually a text from a friend. The text read “I can see you lol” but when the text to voice read it out in its robotic voice over the message machine it went “I CAN..SEE.EE YOU..HAHAHAHAHAHA!” in a witchy tone. Fucked up my whole operation.

5. This is stinking TERRIFYING.

I was about 12 years old and was spending the night at my friend’s house. The two of us and her younger brother were all sleeping in the game room and I couldn’t fall asleep because my friend wouldn’t stop snoring. So I grabbed my blanket and pillow and went to the living room at the front of the house to sleep on the couch. I’m dozing off when all of a sudden the front window is fully illuminated by the headlights of a car.

Now, her house is set far back from the road, so the only way this could happen is if someone purposefully drove up the driveway, and I knew that both of her parents were at home and in bed. Then I hear the crunch of footsteps on the gravel outside and people whispering. By this point I’m fully alert. I go with my instinct and run into the game room to wake up my friend and her brother, and then we run to her parents’ bedroom to tell them what’s happening. Her mom starts running through the house turning on all of the lights and then we hear the screech of tires peeling out of the driveway.

The scariest part is that the next morning, when I go to use their phone to call my mom to come get me, there’s no dial tone. The burglars had cut the line. (This was the ’90s, and cell phones weren’t common yet.) I later find out that this isn’t the first time that they had almost been burgalized. A few months before something similar had happened. Needless to say, I never spent the night at my friend’s house again.

4. Let’s go ahead and blame the video games.

I used to play videogames in my basement when I was younger, with the lights off of course.

Well I started hallucinating things because of a lack of sleep and staring at the tv all day long, crazy stuff. Anyways, the handle of old wooden door we had in the far back of the basement started to rattle and shake on its own, and then slowly opened and made that creepy creaking sound. It was completely pitch black in there. I then saw a long black arm with thin, foggy fingers start to slowly reach out and climb along the wall, and then I saw two eyes peep put from behind the door. I immediately forgot about whatever game I was playing and ran as fast as I could up the stairs and locked the door, that thing scared the hell out of me.

Learned my lesson not to play video games for too long, especially late in the night in a creepy basement.

3. Everyone loves messing with the younger kids.

Here in south Texas theres an urban legend of a thing called La Lechusa. It’s supposedly a witch that transforms into an owl with the head of an ugly old lady.

We’ll never knew about this until I spent the night at my cousins. We were up around 2 in the morning watching tv and the tv turned off. My cousin and I yelled at his older brother wondering why he turned the tv off. He said “Y’all don’t hear that!?” We listened but didn’t hear anything. He says “Listen! Y’all don’t hear that whistling!”

We listened very quietly and heard whistling coming from the backyard. It was a long whistle. Then another, then another over and over. We asked what that was and he told us it was La Lechusa. He explained what it was and that it comes for kids who are up throughout the night. I was laying on the floor next to their bunk bed. But in front of me was a window that faced the backyard. I held my head down in fear that I would look up and see her. He said “Just stay quiet. I’ll turn the tv back on when she goes away.” We lie there and eventually fell asleep.

I woke up minutes later and woke them up because fuck that lol. It’s a tale Ive heard from others since then. Could’ve been something else but as a kid, it’s scared the shit out of me.

2. Maybe a possum? On stilts?

I usually have a rule that i don’t leave my room for whatever reason after 3 am because one night when i was getting water from the fridge i had felt eyes directly on me, giving me goosebumps and making my heart beat faster.

I turned to look towards my front door that has glass panes on either side of it only to see two white orbs staring back at me.

I have felt so much fear in my life.

1. I need a rational explanation immediately.

I’m an ICU nurse.

One night I was looking after a ventilated patient who was brain dead. We were waiting on family to arrive the next day so we could extubate the patient and let them pass. I was waiting for the 3am cares round when I looked at the clock – it was turning backward rapidly.

Freaked me out completely. For the rest of the night I stayed close to the door and within sight of the exit.

Guys I love creepy stories but some of these would have really gotten to me!

Do you have a scary post-midnight tale to tell? We’d love to hear it in the comments!
