This is Why Milk Jugs Have Those Inverted Circles

I saw something recently, one of those “today years old” things, that claimed the inverted circles on the sides of milk jugs would pop out when your milk went bad.

Now, I’m not outright calling that person a liar, but I am saying that, as someone who frequently forgets to dump out old milk, I’ve personally only seen it happen lonnnnnnnnng after a sell-by date.

More like the milk inside has become cottage cheese.

Here’s the meme…

So if that’s not the reason… why are they there, though? Or…. is the meme right?

Not exactly, though there may a kernel of truth to it.

According to Distractify, the concave circles are there primarily to provide structural integrity. A full gallon of liquid in a jug that had only flat, rigid sides made of thin plastic would probably be fine for as long as it sat on your shelf, but if you (or your adorable child) dropped it on the floor, it would most likely explode.

That simple little dimple provides enough give to save your floors, and your milk, in the likely event a toddler has an oopsie involving your jug. The circle would warp outward, giving the milk somewhere to go when it sloshes around on impact – by making it more flexible, they’re also making it more durable.

In the same vein, as milk gets older and microbes become more active, therefore expelling more gas, the dimples also give that excess somewhere to go.

If they weren’t there, a buildup of microbe farts could also explode your jug (in theory).

Basically, the circular indent is there to give your milk somewhere to go, in the event that it becomes too much for the container, for whatever reason, in its current shape.

So yeah, if your milk was really spoiled, and there was tons of microbe breeding and subsequent gas, you might see them pop out to accommodate it.

I really hope that you’d notice your milk had gone bad before then, though.

Unless you’re making cottage cheese on purpose.

In which case, carry on.

This is Why We Bob for Apples on Halloween

If you think that tying children’s hands behind their backs and shoving their faces into cold water in an attempt to latch on to a probably mealy piece of fruit is sort of a strange tradition, well…you’re not wrong.

You’re also not alone, as this Halloween party game has pretty much moved aside to make room for costumes, trick-or-treating, candy, and other spooky-type traditions as opposed to borderline-torturing party guests.

Where did it come from to begin with, and why? Well, buckle up, and get ready – because it’s a little bit romantic.

Historically, apples have long (like since the beginning of Biblical time) been associated with fertility – they’re actually known aphrodisiacs. Joan Morgan, a British apple expert and fruit historian (that’s a thing, I guess), told Salt that “apples, apple peels, and even pips have long been used to peer into the romantic future.”

The idea came across to America when Europeans carried apple seeds on the boats to bring along good fortune.

The idea of bobbing for apples is also a very old tradition, one that started as a sort of courting ritual for young lovers. In one version, if the young lady bit into the apple that held the name of her special someone on the first try, it was like fate giving them the go-ahead.

If it took her two tries, they probably weren’t destined for forever, and three? Pack it in, bucko.

Other games included the first person to bite into an apple being the next to marry, and girls placing the apples they bit under their pillows in exchange for seeing her true love in a dream.

As far as apples and Halloween, the two have also long gone hand-in-hand. Another apple/Halloween game is called Snap Apple, and to play, an apple is pierced with a stick on one side and a candle on the other. The apple moves and spins around the room as people try to take bites out of it, which honestly, sounds hard and also sort of dangerous?

The game is so well-known and popular in places like England and Ireland that October 31 – smack in the middle of harvest season – is known as “Snap-Apple Night.”

Many of our Halloween traditions come from Celtic lore and history – pagan and otherwise –  so it’s no surprise that in America, our All Hallow’s Eve had historically included some kind of interaction with apples.

Now, though, you know why!

And I don’t know about you, but I don’t think I’m ever going to look at apples quite the same, now that I know romance is involved.

How many times have you heard that in your life? Or maybe that’s just me that’s heard that over and over throughout the years…

Things That Millennials Did for the Last Time

Where are all the Millennials at? Gen Y (as in “Why were we dealt this crappy hand?”) is in the house.

Only true Millennials can appreciate these 11 things Millennials did, that we will never do again. In some cases, for the better, in others…well, let’s just say kids today can’t appreciate how much simpler things were back in the day.

1. Take the packaging off of a brand new CD:

Such a satisfying feeling. That plastic was slippery.

2. Play outside with friends:

A little part of me just died inside.

3. Replace dead batteries w/ partially used batteries:

You want to get your moneys worth!

4. Log into AIM:

*sound of a door opening*

5. Log into Myspace:

Who’s in your top 8?

6. Use T9 to send a text:

I don’t miss this.

7. Find a toy in your box of cereal:

When did plastic spoons that change color in milk stop being cool?!

8. Burn a Mix CD:

Mix CDs were the best gifts.

9. Print out your MapQuest directions:

Mom wouldn’t let me leave home without this.

10. Watch a VHS tape:

Jokes on you! I still have all of my bootleg VHS tapes!

11. REWIND that VHS tape:

True dat.

Now I’m feeling all the feels.

You whipper snappers may have Disney+ but I had an entire collection of bootleg VHS tapes. Pus Myspace wasn’t nearly as addictive as social media is today, and you certainly didn’t want your parents getting one. Ah, oh well. At least we have the memories.

My fellow Millennials, which one of these do you relate to most?

Here Are Some Things That Only Millennials Will Appreciate

I may be on the cusp of Millennial-hood, but I’ll claim this identity proudly. Let the world hate us. At least we have brunch.

Now that we’ve killed just about everything worthwhile (sorry American cheese), it’s time to sit back and revel in our us-ness.

Here’s 10 things that only Millennials will appreciate.

1. Ah, yes:

Is it bad that I still don’t know what this is?

2. Checking movie times in the newspaper:

Remember print media?

3. Why?

Because we could.

4.Using LimeWire to download music:

We were so cool.

5. Renting movies from Blockbuster:

This used to be a staple of my daily life.

6. Listening to new music through headphones in the store:

Going to the store to buy music. What a time.

7. When it seemed every teacher had these in their class:

Or those strawberry candies in the strawberry wrapping.

8. I’m not going to tell you what that is:

If you’re truly a Millennial, you’ll know.

9. Always rewind before returning to the store:

It’s just common curtesy.

10. Landlines:

I genuinely do miss the feeling of a REAL phone in my hand. Not a tiny computer.

The best thing about being a Millennial isn’t the crushing student loan debt or the fact that people think we’re lazy despite the fact that a lot of us have multiple jobs just to get by. The best part of being a Millennial is the fact that we knew the world before.

We straddle he gap between millenniums. So we can appreciate a VHS tape just as much as the newest Apple product.

Which one of these do you relate to the most? Let us know in the comments!

Problems That 911 Dispatchers Face During Every Shift

It might not be the most glamorous job in the world, but answering 911 calls takes a special type of person.

911 receives about 240 million calls every year, and with some of the shifts lasting 16 hours – not to mention the content of the calls – you definitely need to be strong.

Here are 9 things they deal with on a regular basis.

9. Never hang up on a dispatcher.

Every time someone calls and hangs up, a dispatcher is required to call back. So even if you’ve made a mistake, it’s best to stay on the line and explain instead of hanging up.

Bill Blume, a dispatcher since 2001, says that he understands wait times can be frustrating, “but at the same time people just don’t appreciate how much a hang-up can slow the process down.”

8. Most calls aren’t true emergencies.

While dispatchers get between 300 and 500 calls a shift, veteran Amanda says “Ninety-five percent are nothing calls.”

“They’re not people who need help. They’re people who have low coping skills.

The fact you don’t know how to change the batteries in your fire alarm is not a 911 call. The fact you don’t know where you parked your car at the mall is not a 911 call.

But you’ll have days when it seems that’s all you get.”

Some states have penalties for abusing the system, but they’re usually only enforced with repeat offenders.

Amanda also says it’s not easy to tell right away whether a problem might be serious.

“The level of distress somebody is displaying is in no way correlated to how serious their problem is.

The people who are screaming the most generally have overflowing toilets.

But the calmest guy will call up and say, ‘I don’t really wanna bother anybody, but my wife isn’t breathing.”

Ugh. Please don’t do this.

7. It really helps if you know your own location.

If you can’t communicate your exact location, a dispatcher can’t send help. Amanda says it’s very common.

“Maybe you’re stuck in a store and  you didn’t pay attention to the address. Or on the highway people are very fuzzy about where they are.

In hotels people don’t know their room number.”

Dispatchers with experience are pretty good at using vague descriptors, the sound of nearing sirens, and in their own lives, are sure to be aware of what’s going on around them at all times.

6. They have a call hierarchy.

Amanda admits that “calls get triaged based on the level of immediate public danger,” which is to say, they may no be addressed in the order they are received.

They also make the call on whether or not emergency vehicles go out with lights and sirens.

5. The disappearance of landlines has made their jobs harder.

Most 911 calls – around 80% – are now made from cell phones, which makes it impossible for the dispatcher to use the person’s phone number to pin down their address.

Nikki, a dispatcher for 9 years, says that some cell phone carriers are more accurate than others, though.

“We’ve discovered that Sprint and Verizon have the most accurate locations.

We were once trying to locate a man with a gun, and he had Sprint, and the map showed him on one side of a pine tree and that’s exactly where he was.”

In 2018, Apple and Google both added services that transmit location data from cell phones to 911.

4. They get a lot of butt dials.

The FCC estimates that around half of the 911 calls from NYC cell phones are accidental – which adds up to 84 million calls every year.

FCC Commissioner Michael O’Rielly says,

“This is a huge waste of resources, raises the cost of providing 911 services, depletes PSAP morale, and increases the risk that legitimate 911 calls – and first responders – will be delayed.”

Nikki says it’s not all bad, though.

“We’ve had people call with the phone under their pillow while they’re having sex, or people singing while they’re driving down the road.”

On rare occasions, accidental calls have also helped lead to real arrests.

3. You don’t have to say a word.

It’s entirely possible that someone calling for help may not be able to speak, like in a case where they don’t want to be overheard, or if they’re choking.

Dispatchers are trained to ask yes-or-no questions that the caller can answer with the push of a button.

Martha, a dispatcher from George, explains,

“…if there’s a domestic situation, we’ll ask, ‘Is he still in the room? Does he have a weapon? Has he been drinking?’”

Truly terrifying.

2. You might get a busy signal.

If there is a large emergency that is experienced or witnessed by a large crowd, lines could be busy, says Amanda.

“When you have a very public incident going on, sometimes you’ll get busy signals because there are instantly 1000 calls.

The problem is that within those busy signals are some set of people calling for things that are not the public incident.”

So yeah, don’t call if there’s a BIG emergency… just your emergency.

1. Here’s how you get around it.

If you can’t get through, try calling your police or fire department directly – Rachel Herron, a former dispatcher from California says they’re easy to find online.

“You should have that number programmed into your phone.”

I don’t think I could handle it, honestly.

If you’re a 911 operator or know someone who is, tell us some good stories in the comments!
