Snuggling Your Pet and Other Coping Mechanisms People Turn to When They’re Overwhelmed

Life is stressful, always.

If you’re struggling to manage anxiety and stress, or if you’re just feeling overwhelmed, there’s no better time than the present to learn some healthy coping strategies.

Implementing these 16 coping mechanisms, like snuggling your pet, can be helpful to anyone who just needs a few more tools in their tool belt for handling the stresses life throws their way.

1. Try Square Breathing

Square breathing is a type of breath work that can help decrease stress in your body.

Start by inhaling for four counts, holding for four counts, exhaling for four counts, and resting for four counts. Then repeat!

2. Do something simple to focus your mind:

Sometimes simple tasks like folding laundry, doing the dishes, or mowing the lawn can be an opportunity to focus your mind on something other than the stressors in your life.

A mini yet productive break from everything else on your to-do list.

3. Take a walk

If you can, get outside and take a walk. Sometimes a change of scenery can really help us reset, especially if you live near a park or in the midst of natural beauty.

Plus, the fresh air and exercise will be good for you!

4. Play a video game, like Stardew Valley:

If you can’t get outside, try the next best thing.

Playing a game like Stardew Valley or Animal Crossing can transport you into a beautifully animated world where you can grow and harvest fruits and vegetables and decorate your own fantasy home.

5. Watch a familiar movie or TV series:

When getting outside or doing dishes does NOT sound appealing, try tuning into a favorite TV series or rewatching a favorite movie.

It can feel like spending quality time with close friends, without the pressure of exerting energy in actual conversation.

6. Try journaling:

Journaling is a tried and true way of processing our thoughts.

Sometimes the simple act of writing down our fears and anxieties can help us gain perspective. At the very least, it allows us to release these stressors from our mind for the time being.

7. Snuggle your pet:

If you have a pet, whether they’re furry, scaly, or feathered, section off time in your schedule every day to spend quality time with them.

They need this attention of course, but you can also benefit by disconnecting from everything else to snuggle and play with your special friend.

8. Try the 5-4-3-2-1 Technique:

According to the University of Rochester Medical Center, this five-step exercise can be very helpful for grounding you in the present if you’re experiencing anxiety or panic.

9. Find an anchor:

A comfort object like a stuffed animal can help in moments of stress. But it doesn’t have to be a stuffed animal.

A grounding object can be any object that holds a strong, positive memory for you or soothes you in stressful times. Consider a photograph, a piece of jewelry, or even a smooth rock.

10. Escape into a world of fantasy:

Escapism is a valid outlet for coping with difficult times. Try getting lost in a good book series, or create your own world and imagine the stories of the characters who live there.

Playing role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons can also be a great way to escape into a fantasy with friends.

11. Allow yourself to take a nap:

If you have the ability, allow yourself to lay down and take a nap.

If your stress is a result of exhaustion or pushing yourself too hard at work or at home, this might be exactly what you need to feel less overwhelmed.

12. Try EFT Tapping

Emotional freedom technique (EFT) has been used to treat people with anxiety and people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It utilizes the meridian points to restore balance to your body’s energy.

There are plenty of online videos that will teach you how to practice this on yourself.

13. Create a playlist for when you’re stressed:

Find a song, or create a whole playlist, that will help you recenter yourself when you’re feeling overwhelmed.

It could contain classical music and Tibetan singing bowls, or it could be nothing but death metal. Whatever works for YOU.

14. Color!

Coloring books are for adults too. Coloring can be a simple, meditative task that allows you to be creative while you de-stress.

Check out Amazon for a variety of comical or beautiful options.

15. Count:

Counting to ten or counting down from one hundred forces you to stop and focus on something else other than whatever is making you upset.

It might seem rudimentary, but it can really help.

16. Watch cute or funny videos:

When all else fails, one easy way to distract yourself from everything that’s making you anxious is watching funny or inspiring videos on TikTok, Youtube, Facebook, and all the rest.

It may feel like a waste of time, but isn’t stress spiraling an even bigger waste of time?

If you feel that your life is being significantly impacted by stress, finding a licensed therapist is highlight recommended. Try Betterhelp.com for an affordable, socially distant option.

These coping strategies are just a handful of tools you can easily implement into your everyday life to better handle feelings of stress and anxiety. They won’t solve your problems, but they can help you build up the strength to handle your problems.

A Quieter World Makes the Sparrow’s Song More Alluring to Mates

You’ve probably seen a headline or read an article about how the natural world seems to have righted itself in a few ways lately.

There’s less pollution, there are fewer people driving, and in general, nature really seems to be enjoying their time free from human machines.

It’s not really surprising, if you think about it!

Scientists have dubbed the relative silence “anthropause,” which has led to an increase in wildlife sightings and a short-term reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.

And listen to this – even sparrows, the world’s most underwhelming birds, are getting sexier. The reason is that they’ve basically had to scream to be heard over all of the other ambient city noise, but without the competing background sounds, they can really focus on their singing.

Their song has turned almost soulful, and I can only imagine the lady sparrows are loving it.

Research shows that they do prefer the softer, lower notes that can be heard not that the noise pollution in some major cities has fallen as much as 50%.

The effect, said lead researcher Elizabeth Derryberry, a behavioral ecologist at the University of Tennessee, has been great.

“These birds use their songs to defend breeding territories and attract mates, therefore any change in their mating songs will likely affect reproductive success.”

Translation?

A whole bunch more sparrow females are going to swoon, more guy sparrows are going to get lucky, and we’re all going to get more little babies come spring.

Scientists believe that, as lockdowns continue to ease and the pandemic hopefully becomes a thing of the past, their songs will return to “normal” within a year or two.

It was nice while it lasted. At least, it was for the sparrows.

What do you think about this news?

Nokia Won a NASA Contract for a 4G Network Based… on the Moon!

You actually read that headline right! Science is just getting weirder and weirder.

We’re one step closer to actually making the Star Wars universe a reality, since Nokia is about to put a 4G network on the Moon. Soon enough, there will be literally no excuse for any cell service to be bad.

In NASA’s fifth Tipping Point solicitation, Nokia was awarded a $14.1 million contract to deploy an LTE/4G communication system on the Moon.

This would be the first ever lunar-based network of its kind. The system would assist Moon-based communications at greater speeds, further distances, and more reliability. The network will also support the operation of lunar rovers and video streaming. That’s right, soon enough we might be able to see livestreams from the Moon with minimal lag.

The network also means that astronauts in space could soon communicate more efficiently with those of us on Earth.

Don’t let the development mislead you, though. Space is by no means a dead zone. Astronauts have been able to tweet, email, and livestream pretty efficiently from the ISS since 2010.

Researchers have always aimed to keep outer space from feeling like a desolate no man’s land.

Truly, the aim of this development is to further support the construction of a lunar base. With Artemis astronauts set to return to the Moon by 2024, Nokia’s network will help them conduct their necessary research with greater scope and accuracy.

Since NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine aims to have a base on the Moon by 2028, astronauts will need to work as efficiently as possible to get the job done.

Nokia’s 4G network has the potential to make that happen.

What are your thoughts on this lunar 4G network? Is it inspiring or totally crazy?

California Introduced a Bill That Would Require Cops to Have a 4-Year Degree

Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, you know there is a swirling conversation in this country around policing and police reform.

Violence has been wrought, people have died, and there have been calls for defunding the police to more sensitivity and de-escalation training, to those who believe things are fine the way that they are.

Now, a California assemblyman has proposed an interesting solution to the excessive uses of force by law enforcement – he wants to require all incoming officers to have either a bachelor’s degree or be more than 25-years-old.

Reggie Jones-Sawyer introduced Bill-89, citing a 2007 study that found that the more educated officers were, the less likely they were to use force. They also rack up fewer complaints from the community and their fellow officers.

Jones-Sawyer made the following statement:

“This data-driven bill relies on years of study and new understandings of brain development to ensure that only those officers capable of high-level decision-making and judgment in tense situations are entrusted with working in our communities and correctional facilities.”

The requirement to be at least 25 is due to research that shows that, in the areas of impulse control, planning, and working memory, the human brain is not fully developed until after that age.

Image Credit: PexelsThe state already accepts that as true, since they extended youth offender parole to 25.

“These jobs are complex, they’re difficult, and we should not just hand them over to people who haven’t fully developed themselves.

This could be the beginning of changing the entire way that policing is done on the front end.

Then we can let the bad cops retire on the back end.”

California would be the first state to require a 4-year degree, though Illinois, New Jersey, and North Dakota all require at least two years of college.

They would join plenty of countries around the world, though – England, Wales, Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Sweden all require college education before becoming a police officer.

Esteban Nunez, director of the Anti-Recidivism Coalition, verifies,

“The evidence is clear – the prefrontal cortex of the brain is not fully developed until age 25.

It is with similar logic that youth must be treated as youth by our criminal justice system.”

Science is on their side, but only time will tell whether other lawmakers will agree –  and whether science and research will translate to lives saved on the streets.

A Sealed Copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 Just Sold For Really Big Bucks

If you need some cash, you might rummage through those boxes you’ve never unpacked in your basement – there are always stories about one thing or another selling for unexpectedly huge money once the internet gets their eyes on something special.

Or something they deem special, anyway.

In this case, an unopened copy of Super Mario Bros. 3, which sold for over $150,000.

Even if you’re not a gamer or collector, you probably realize that Super Mario Bros. is one of the most enduring franchises of all time. There are new games, sure, but one of the things people like best about it is the nostalgia for the games of our childhood that the characters float to the surface.

Over 330 million copies of Super Mario games have been sold, making it one of the top three best-selling video game franchises in history.

Which is probably probably at least part of why an unopened copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 sold, at auction, for $156,000.

The game sets a record, as the highest sale price for a video game previously was $114,000 – and it was for another Super Mario game.

The bidding on the sealed Super Mario 3 game began at $62,500, and more than 20 people fought to be the winner and add it to their collection.

Heritage Auctions, who handled the sale, issued a press release:

“While the condition of the game is remarkable, what makes this copy even more singular is the layout of the packaging itself: Exceedingly rare are sealed copies with the word ‘Bros.’ formatted to the left, covering one of Mario’s signature white gloves.

Collectors have spent years looking for such a version – the earliest in the Super Mario Bros. 3 production history – and usually come up empty-handed.”

So check your basements, people. You might have some cash just sitting down there ready to be auctioned off!

“How Can Rich People Go Bankrupt and Still Get Loans, but Average People Get Blacklisted for Years?” People Answer.

If it seems like there are two sets of rules in this world – one for the haves and one for everyone else, well, you’re not alone.

One of the places we see this discrepancy is when we lose everything, and are forced to file bankruptcy.

How is it that a rich person can go bankrupt multiple times and still receive loans and start new companies but if the average person declares bankruptcies they’re basically blacklisted for years and their credit is ruined? from NoStupidQuestions

A regular person is looking at 7-13 years of rebuilding their financial life.

A rich person is looking for a loan that will get them through to their next huge embarrassing failure.

If you’ve ever wondered why, this thread is for you!

17. They’re rich for a reason.

It’s all in how s/he organizes their business. A corporation is fully separate from the owner (shareholder), and in court and for tax purposes, they are treated like a separate person, which is why you file a corporate tax return.

In other words, a corporation can go bankrupt, but that will have little bearing on the owner (shareholder). Corporations have the privilege of being able to file for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy which simply allows the corporation to reorganize the company, whereas individuals can only file Chapter 7 (liquidate all your assets to discharge all your debts) or Chapter 13 (3 to 5 year repayment plan that discharges your debts). Both have a negative impact on an individual’s credit score.

In other words, rich people are rich because they know tax and business law better and take full advantage.

16. They’re protected.

The person didn’t declare bankruptcy, the corporation that the person owned declared bankruptcy.

This prevents the majority of the negative effects of bankruptcy from affecting the owner.

15. PR spin can do a lot.

There are vanishingly few chapter 11s that aren’t the result of some form of major failure or another. People put a lot of spin on what a filing really means for PR purposes, but believe me, a company does not undertake the incredibly expensive, painful, and laborious step of actually filing unless catastrophe is imminent or has already occurred.

The end result in the vast majority of these cases is that the owners (shareholders) are wiped out. Either a bankruptcy sale will happen, the proceeds of which run out in the middle of the capital stack long before reaching the shareholders, or some class of creditors will receive all of the equity in the reorganized debtor as partial satisfaction of the debt.

It’s true that chapter 11 rarely means the end of the business, but almost always, someone is getting megaf**ked in a chapter 11; the shareholders, then the unsecured creditors, in that order.

14. The system is rigged.

Yes this. But there is also something in the credit scoring algorithms that puts people into different buckets. For example, when I worked in real estate had 2 applicants for a place with the same low credit score of around 600.

One was 20 years old, really had no significant debt and defaulted on like a $60 dollar credit card bill out of probably pure negligence (her mom would be cosigning for the place)

The other guy bought and flipped properties, fell under water (this was around 2009) and defaulted on over $1m in loans. Same credit score.

13. Straight predatory.

I would actually say it’s not true that bankruptcy gets you blacklisted quite the contrary because your debt gets locked in for 7 years because you can’t file again for 7 years.

A lot of times a few months after someone files they get a lot of offers from credit card companies

12. There should be space for details.

This is something that’s frustrated me my whole life.

My credit isn’t good. But I messed it up keeping a roof over my head in college and beyond.

But my score gets looked at the same as some kid who signed up for credit cards and blew all the money on booze and trips and clothes.

Mine was spent on cheap rent and utilities and healthcare. I’m working my a$s off to fix it, and I will, I just wish there were more to it.

11. We don’t use the same applications.

Well, a lot of financing that rich people get is private investment, not bank loans.

So they’re not trying to convince a bank with a credit rating, they’re trying to convince investors with a value proposition.

10. It’s not personal.

This. Financial institutions are not the morality/personal choice police, all they care about is whether you pay or not and if you did that’s great and if you didn’t that’s bad.

If you defaulted on a debt because you had bad luck and had no choice but to do so to stay alive it’s the exact same result for them as someone that defaulted on a similar sized debt but for something else, like strippers, so you’ll be treated equally.

There’s nothing inherently “better” about someone that couldn’t pay out of desperation vs. someone that couldn’t pay out of mismanagement.

9. It’s all in who you know.

Rich/wealthy people use private banking when they use banks.

Credit scores don’t matter much in private banking.

If a rich person wants to finance a 10 million dollar mortgage and has a 100 million dollar investment account with the bank, they’re going to give him/her the loan without caring about anything other than the other outstanding debts that person has.

8. It depends.

This only works for some businesses though, right?

A corporation (like Toys R Us) can easily claim bankruptcy without directly affecting the individuals who are a part of the corporation.

In the case of a proprietorship (like a locally owned and operated store), for example, since the liability of the business is directly tied to the individual owner, wouldn’t that affect their financial standing as well?

7. Who cares about treason?

Or they are financed by Russian mafia who pay a fee to launder money through businesses.

When you have such a bad track record that no one will lend to you any more, you make deals that allow you to still make money on shitty businesses by laundering.

Or you get a “legit” loan through Deutschebank with ties to Russian mobsters.

6. It’s shady as heck.

Fun fact, this is why subcompanies exist too. most property companies will file each building as it’s own company eg. 123 Main St, LLC. and operate it as part of their business and just have that one declare bankruptcy if something drastic goes wrong.

The shadiest example of this is mining companies putting mines into separate companies when they go bust so that they don’t have to deal with the cleanup costs.

“That mine doesn’t belong to MegaCoal anymore, it is property of Toxic Pit, LLC! and Toxic Pit LLC would love to follow the legal steps and cleanup for the property, but they have approximately zero assets or money! Oh well, Toxic Pit is bust! I guess the government has to deal with it now!”

5. Must be nice.

In college I knew a girl who worked for a millionaire. He told her he’d made money and lost it several times. His advice to her was you never use your own money to make money, you use someone else’s.

Hence, as others have pointed out, a corporation that has people buying into it as an investment can go under and there is a separation between the corporation and the individual. This is not talking about a mom and pop gas station but larger businesses.

4. When the bank gambles.

Something I read a while ago on here…

“Take a thousand dollar loan, you worry.

Take a million dollar loan, both you and the bank worry.

Take a billion dollar loan, the bank worries.”

If I fail to repay the thousand dollar loan, the bank will come down heavy on me and I will either pay it or my wages get garnished until the entire loan (plus interest) is paid.

If I fail to pay back the billion dollar loan, the bank will work WITH me because they don’t want to take a massive hit.

3. It’s a classic for a reason.

It’s an old joke:

If you have $10,000 in debt, that’s your problem.

If you have $10,000,000,000 in debt, that’s the bank’s problem.

2. An interesting take.

There was a lot of impact on World War 1 about supporting a country at war for the survival of the country because they owe you money.

If you owe the bank money, the bank controls you. But if you owe the bank enough money, you control the bank. At that point the bank has an interest if your survival

1. Find the right loan officer.

I’m in financial services and here is the basics on this. Most lenders yes would blacklist the individual. But it also depends on the lender and the type of lending being done. Some lenders charge more (higher interest rates) for the added risk and others specialize in Asset Based lending, in which they don’t care about the individual but just the assets.

In most cases, real estate being the most valuable. Many cookie cutter lenders like the big 4 would not touch someone with a 10ft pool that has a BK, but that doesn’t mean someone won’t. There is a lender for everyone out there. Just need to find one.

I don’t know why the world is the way it is, but sometimes I really want off.

Do you think this is fair? Is there any way to change it?

One theory is that cats do this to mark their territory, using the scent glands found in their paws.

Another theory suggests this is a “neotenic behavior,” or a behavior that has carried over from when they were kittens; kittens knead their mother’s belly when they are nursing to stimulate milk production.

3. There’s a cat painting that’s worth close to one million dollars:

Wealthy San Francisco philanthropist and art collector Kate Birdsall Johnson loved her cats so much, she commissioned Austrian immigrant Carl Kahler to paint a 6-by-8.5-foot oil portrait of them in 1891.

The 42 life-size Angora and Persian cats in the painting, referred to by Mrs. Johnson’s husband as, “my wife’s lovers” can be seen lounging around and living it up in their luxurious owner’s mansion.

4. America’s favorite breed is the Exotic Domestic Shorthair:

In 2018, the Cat Fanciers Association announced the Exotic Domestic Shorthair was officially American’s favorite breed of cat.

This squashed-faced feline looks similar to a Persian, but with their shorter coats they require less over maintenance.

5. T.S Eliot concluded cats were more poetical than dogs:

Sure, you’ve heard of the beautiful and horrific disaster that is Cats the movie musical (we love to hate it), but did you know Cats was based on a book by T.S Eliot, called Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats?

Originally the book was meant to feature poems about dogs as well, but Eliot concluded “dogs don’t seem to lend themselves to verse quite so well, collectively, as cats.”

6. Japan has an official Train Stationmaster cat:

Speaking of Cats, Skimbleshanks isn’t the only railway cat around.

Meet Nitama, the Wakayama Cat!

Nitama (who took over for the original feline station manager Tama, after they passed away) is the official stationmaster of Wakayama Electric Railway.

You can make a day of riding this train. Not only can you meet Nitama and her fellow stationmaster cats when you visit, you can also enjoy a cat-themed cafe, shop, museum and even a shrine.

The train itself is also decorated with images of cats, inside and out.

7. Japan considers black cats to be good luck:

Have you ever been told not to let a black cat cross your path? In some cultures black cats have long been seen as omens of bad luck, or associated with demons or dark forces.

However, in Japan, black cats are seen as a sign of good luck! Especially for single women, as they are thought to attract fine, potential suitors.

8. Your cat might be allergic to you:

Humans aren’t the only mammals with allergies.

Like humans, cats and dogs can be allergic to flea saliva, certain foods and even dander.

Although we think of dander as coming from our pets, we humans produce it as well.

If you notice your cat sneezing often or see little scabs or missing hair around the head and neck area, check with your vet about getting your pet tested for allergies.

9. Cats can jump up to five times their own height:

Cat’s brains have a larger cerebellum than most other mammals, which gives them a biological advantage when it comes to balance and movement.

This, matched with heightened senses and a body built for agility and speed, allows them to jump five times their own height and six times their own length.

10. And there’s a reason why cats always land on their feet:

Thanks to a cat’s vestibular apparatus (a balance system located in the inner ear), they are able to tell up from down when falling.

Using their flexible backbones, they can twist their bodies mid-fall to point their paws downward.

They might not always land as gracefully as you expect, but they have a better chance of doing so than any human.

11. Nyan Cat was based on a real cat:

Remember Nyan Cat? They’re still nyaning on.

Chris Torres, the creator of Nyan Cat, based the cat portion of this classic Internet sensation on his own cat, a Russian Blue named Marty.

The Pop-Tart portion of Nyan Cat is most definitely a Cherry Pop-Tart. The cat of Pop-Tarts, if you will.

Aren’t cats amazing? Their agile bodies and acrobatic feats are beautiful to behold, and their ability inspire us never ends. (Just like Nyan Cat.)
