Why Do Onions Burn Your Eyes?

We’ve all been there: you’re in the kitchen, cutting onions for your signature pasta sauce when, all of a sudden, your eyes start burning. You wipe away the tears, and keep cutting, trying your hardest to hold them back. Despite your best attempts, tears begin to pour from your face as if your favourite television character was just killed off. All of this occurred simply because of an onion. But why? What makes this vegetable so potent, and why does it hold such a dominion over you? Simply put: onions produce chemicals that irritate your eyes. But, if you’re interested

What are the Health Benefits of Eggs?

Eggs are among my favourite foods. Be it a cheesy omelette, hard-boiled eggs with a side of toast, or the ultimate hors d’oeuvre, deviled eggs, I cannot get enough. Loaded with protein, they serve as an excellent midday pick-me-up on my lunch breaks. Fortunately, my love for eggs isn’t impeded by negative health side effects as eggs tend to be among the healthiest of foods. Some people even go as far as to label them “superfoods”. But, what are the health benefits of eggs, exactly? First, let’s discuss the nutritional value of eggs. Eggs rank high when it comes to

What is the longest recorded flight of a chicken?

Last week, I explained why roosters crow, and provided some backstory as to my experience with chickens. Today, I offer no backstory, but more chicken-related information! When you think of chickens, the word “fly” likely never pops up, unless it’s preceded with “can’t”. Although they are capable of brief bursts of flight, you’ve probably never seen one soaring through the sky. What a sight that would be, huh? But, as with all things, humanity seeks to find the limits of all things, living or nonliving. We collect these records and compile them into books of feats both wondrous, and dangerous.

Why Do Roosters Crow?

My father’s a big fan of chickens. Once upon a time, my family and I lived on a farm. We adopted horses, goats, the fattest pig I’d ever seen in my life, and raised rabbits, ducks, and, most prominently, chickens. Life was a dream. Unfortunately, as with all things, it didn’t last. We were forced to move into the city, losing all of our animals in the process. However, this move proved only a minor setback for my father. It wasn’t long before we had multiple chicken coops filled in our relatively small backyard. Now, it’s as if we never

The chills you sometimes get when listening to music is called “musical frisson”

It’s been an arduous day at work, one you’re thrilled its finally over. You’re in your car, half-listening to the radio DJ make the same stupid joke he so cravingly clings to. “That’s the third time this week,” you think. “Give it up already.” Eventually, the awkward yammering ends, and you’re returned to the music. A new song plays, one you’ve yet to hear, and it immediately catches your attention. Chills chase up your spine, goosebumps stipple your skin, and you shiver in your seat with excitement. What a delightful tune! If this, or a similar experience, has happened to

The World Is Running Out Of Chocolate

There are few things in the world better than a bar of milky chocolate. The delightful taste of chocolate in your mouth just seems to have a way of melting away your troubles. Be it dark, peanut butter cups, or loaded with nougat, caramel, and peanuts, most – if not all – can agree on one thing; our love of chocolate. Unfortunately, I have some bad news for you, my dear consumers of chocolate. The world, as we know it, is running out of chocolate! As it turns out,  love for chocolate is infectious. A large portion of the world

Sushi Relieves Stress

New promotion at work stressing you out? Perhaps it’s the intense pre-final studying? Maybe a troublesome personal relationship? Or, worst case scenario, it’s a combination of these three that you’re attempting – but desperately failing – to juggle? Then try eating some sushi! The combination of fish, rice, and seaweed provides a surprisingly large number of healthy nutrients. Fish, for example, is packed with omega-3 fatty acids that support heart protection, and improved circulation. Rice’s ample supply of protein labels it a good source of energy. Wasabi (if you like it spicy) helps prevent tooth decay. However, when it comes

Top 10 Wealthiest Countries in the World (GDP per capita)

The overall success of a country can be determined by many factors, such as citizen health, happiness, equality, military force, and government functions. However, the most used factor in these calculations is measuring GDP (gross domestic product) per capita. The measurement of GDP per capita allows an extremely useful performance measurement of each country. This is accomplished by dividing the total value of goods produced, and services provided, by the total country population. While there are nearly two-hundred countries existing today in the world, it would be a monotonous task to list each one (and read) in this article. Therefore,

Inhabiting these vast, and diverse, regions are countless species, each one unique, and fascinating. Throughout history, however, these beautiful creatures have suffered many existential dangers, from natural disasters to man-made incursions.
