This is What You Should Do If You’re Approached by a Dog Without a Leash If You’re Walking Your Dog

Very few things raise your blood pressure when you’re walking with your own pet like seeing a dog run toward you off its leash.

Many states have laws against this occurrence, but it happens all the time. Either a dog escapes from its yard or an owner is overconfident in their pet’s capacity to behave off the leash.

Whether that dog is friendly or not, there are ways to protect yourself and your dog when you’re approached. Use the strategies below to keep any unexpected  encounters low-key.

1. Be Aware of Your Surroundings

Instead of scrolling through your phone or listening to a podcast on your walk, remain engaged and aware of what’s going on around you.

You’re more likely to see escapees before they’re right in front of you and your pet.

2. Lure Your Dog Away

Before your dog engages with a strange dog, use treats and praise to lead yours away.

You want to create enough distance that they lose interest in each other. Easy to do when treats are involved.

3. Use Barriers

If possible, put something large between you and the approaching dog.

Stand behind a parked car or structure to make getting to you and your dog more difficult.

4. Use Commands

Many dogs know the words sit or stay and will obey even if you’re not their owner.

Try, “go home.” That may work too for a strange dog.

5. Know How To Pick Up Your Own Dog

You may feel like snatching up your own small dog when a big one approaches. This will work if you do it right.

Turn your back before scooping up your pet. Otherwise, you may unintentionally invite the bigger one to jump or pounce.

7. Look for Signs of Dog Aggression

All dogs are different, but erect ears and low growling while running straight at you will generally tell you what you need to know.

But, even if the dog seems friendly, it’s best to put some distance between you two.

8. Report the incident

To prevent injuries to dogs and people, report any encounters with off-leash dogs.

Someone may be looking for them.

9. Don’t Panic

Don’t run away or let your dog know you think something is wrong.

Create distance and if the other dog is following, have yours sit or lie down.

10. Avoid Dog Sprays

Depending on the wind, you may only end up fumigating yourself or your own pet.

So what if the worst happens and the dogs begin fighting? NEVER try to pull them apart. You may get seriously injured.

Instead, call for help and try to spray them with water or putting something large between them.

Please, don’t worry… these encounters rarely become too dramatic. But, it’s always good to know the ways you can keep yourself, your pet and other animals safe before an accidental meeting.

Do you have any tips you’d like to give? Let us know in the comments!

22 Google Chrome Extensions That Will Save You Time and Money

Listen up!

Customer and user customization is key for companies looking to maintain a solid consumer base. For example, have you ordered a meal and asked to substitute the offered side (like vegetables) for french fries only for the waiter to reply, “Sorry, no substitutions.” It’s frustrating!

The same thing happens with technology. User experiences are super important for these companies. I’m sure you’ve noticed (especially on social media apps) how changes are made to enhance the platforms. Chrome, a Google product, is one technology that lends customization to their users to personalize their own experience.

So what are extensions?

Google explains it as,

“Extensions are small software programs that customize the browsing experience. They enable users to tailor Chrome functionality and behavior to individual needs or preferences.

They are built on web technologies such as HTML, JavaScript, and CSS.”

In layman’s terms, you can install little bits of software to help your browser react certain ways. They “are typically used to add features and enhance the functionality of a website, [but] they can also be used to remove unwanted website elements such as pop-up ads and features such as auto-play for online videos.”

So what extensions are the best? Reddit user, u/acidplasm posed the question, “What Chrome extensions make the internet 100x better?” and here are the best answers!

A Little Boy’s Drumming Video Goes Viral and He Got to Meet His Heroes Onstage

Slipknot has had a rabid fan following for more than two decades. Their live shows, complete with their explosive stage show and frightening masks, have made them a perennial favorite among metalheads.

And a 5-year-old boy from England named Caleb is one of those diehard Slipknot fans. And boy, did young Caleb get to live out a dream recently due to his own musical prowess.

It all started when Slipknot’s Jay Weinberg retweeted a viral video of Caleb air-drumming perfectly at a Slipknot show.

Caleb also went viral when this video of him playing along with a Slipknot song was viewed over 1.3 million times on YouTube (so far). Even his Slipknot costume and face paint are on point.

The band was so impressed with Caleb’s skill and dedication that they invited him to a show in Birmingham, England, to meet the band and they even invited him to come out on stage.

Flip through these awesome photos on Weinberg’s Instagram page to see what a blast young Caleb had that night.

Caleb’s Twitter account posted about the epic evening as well.

I love this story! Keep drumming, Caleb, so we can see you playing up on stage soon!

Start ’em young, parents! Being a metalhead is a lifetime commitment!

This is Where You Can Watch “Hair Love,” the Oscar-Winning Short

You’ve probably heard of the short film Hair Love and its well-deserved 2020 Oscar Award for Best Short Film.

Director Matthew A. Cherry had an NFL career before settling on filmmaking as his next passion. His short film touches on the struggle of Black fathers who struggle to style their daughter’s hair, all with adorable animations that challenge negativity about natural hair.

What many don’t know is that Cherry began his Hair Love journey with a Kickstarter campaign. But Cherry’s journey is even more endearing because of his own declarations in 2012.

The director and his collaborators, who include Karen Rupert Tolive, wanted to make a film that shattered stereotypes and prejudices against Black people, especially those who choose not to straighten their hair. Cherry says,

“Hair Love was done because wanted to see more representation in animation.

We wanted to normalize black hair.”

Indeed, the director is right that there are few animations and films that depict natural hair in a positive light. But there’s more. Cherry gave a heartfelt speech when he won, and he used his moment to shine a light on the CROWN Act, a law that would bar discrimination against people who choose natural hairstyles.

Cherry posted the short film on his website and on YouTube for easier access.

Hair Love has already had a major impact and influence on the way people discuss natural hair.

Americans Are Going to the Library More than They Are Going to the Movies

This is pretty interesting.

According to a Gallup poll, American libraries are still very important even in this digital age where information is at our fingertips at any time.

Gallup asked a sample of 1,025 adults across all 50 states and the District of Columbia the number of times they engaged in nine leisure activities in the past year. The winner was taking a trip to the local library.

Yeah, really.

Participants responded that they made 10.5 trips to the library, which was more than the runner-up activity of going to see a movie. That came in with an average of 5.3 times. The zoo had the least amount of visits at 0.9.

Here’s what’s interesting… Gallup did a similar poll in 2001 and found the results were similar in this follow-up. This suggests that trips to the library are just as important even as technology advances.

Libraries also offer many free amenities like wifi and use of computers. Pollsters found that people from low income households tended to rate libraries high on their list.

A Pew Research Center study in 2016 also found that 29 percent of people used libraries for these services.

More expensive leisure activities like gambling or trips to amusement parks sat at the bottom of the Gallup list.

Women tended to visit the library more than men at a rate of 13.4 visits, on average, compared to 7.5 visits for men. Men also wanted to participate in activities that require tickets such as theme and amusement parks.

As far as those movie numbers, adults without kids went to the movies the most often.

But, in these fast-moving, high-tech times, it’s nice to know the old-fashioned library is still serving our communities as well as they did in their beginnings.

Long live the library!

This Giant, Inflatable Game of Twister Is What You Need for Your Next Party

Twister has been a longtime favorite for a reason – it gets you up and moving, it makes people laugh, and you can drink and/or flirt really well while playing it.

That’s pretty much all you need to nail it, future game-makers out there.

Now, the makers are upping their game with a giant inflatable version sure to take your next gathering up another level or two.

Why? Well, the 15-by-15 foot inflatable is big enough for everyone to play at once. And even though the rules are the same as in regular Twister, the added challenge of re-stabilizing the game board every time someone shifts to a new dot is what makes it A LOT more fun.

A 1-horsepower air blower is included with your purchase of the mat and a 3-foot-tall spinning wheel that’s easy enough to see from anywhere on the surface.

What I’m saying is everything you need to have the garden party of your dreams – and your guests nightmares, probably – is waiting for you to click “Add to cart.”

Go ahead and do it – there’s nothing like having a few glasses of wine and then climbing on a bouncy house without walls with a few of your friends.

I mean, I assume…

These Biases Cloud Your Decision-Making

All of us think we make decisions independently until we realize that biases can cloud our judgment. So how do we become objective enough to make better decisions?

Science and psychology can help you understand your own biases so you can hopefully figure out what influences you. And hey, remember that your interest in self-improvement means you’re already a step ahead of the curve. Check for these five biases when making decisions.

5. Choice-Supporting Bias

Let’s suppose you decide to buy a $200 pair of shoes even though it wasn’t a good idea. You justify it by saying that you earned this pair of shoes even though you could have used a coupon or searched for a better option. Maybe the $50 pair of shoes was just as nice, but you tell yourself your decision was good because it was yours.

That’s choice-supporting bias. People make a decision that isn’t good. Perhaps they didn’t have all the best information (they didn’t know about an upcoming sale, or about other shoe stores, in this example).

Instead, they try to rationalize everything so they can feel better.

4. Bandwagon Effect

Have you ever walked out of a group meeting where people agreed on something because a more powerful person said it or because agreeing on the first suggestion was easier? If everyone is agreeing, then the idea or decision must be good.

This is the bandwagon effect. It’s common practice for consumer businesses to talk someone into buying something because “everyone else is doing it.”

The bandwagon effect may persuade someone to buy this item even if it means compromising their beliefs.

3. Anchoring Bias

Also known as focalism, this refers to a tendency to rely on only one type of information in order to make a decision.

Suppose you are looking for a new home, you may give too much importance to one neighborhood over another, even when there are comparable areas to live in that would help you snag a good deal.

2. Availability Heuristic

This is actually a mental shortcut that can help you make decisions a bit faster, but it can falter sometimes. Basically, it means that you give things more importance if you can think of them first or faster.

How does it work? Let’s say there are news reports about a recent plane crash. The news, radio, and other media continue to discuss this event, so you may erroneously assume there are more plane crashes nowadays because the information is available.

1. Blind-Spot Bias

This bias results from the failure to recognize that you have biases, to begin with.

It’s easier to see biases in other people, but at a certain point, you need to look inward.

Now that you’re aware of these biases, how do you think you will make decisions in the future? Do you plan to question more about why you think as you do? Feel free to share your ideas in the comments!
