A Tumblr User Took a Deep Dive on ‘Lord of the Rings’ Mythology

My entire knowledge of the Lord of the Rings universe is “Short man takes ring to volcano, Peter Jackson stretches The Hobbit into three unnecessary movies. ”

But then I’ll stumble upon things like this Tumblr essay from user mirkwoodest, and be reminded that the Lore of the Rings is richer and more complicated than just about anything else out there.

You get it? Lore of the Rings?

Nevermind, just check out this thread about Tolkien’s insane naming system.

It starts with something I never realized… that the Hobbits had different names?!?

Is this retconning gone wild? Not exactly.

But if you think this is just about TWO languages, hold onto your butt.

I’ve never seen anyone this excited about etymology.

Then come the Horse People.

Basically, it’s word-nerd inception.

God bless the internet and its ability to connect people who know way too much about their favorite things. And Tumblr seems to be THE repository for things like that.

What’s a topic you could nerd out about forever? Let us know in the comments!

Or write a lengthy, well-researched post on Tumblr and drop a link in the comments.

Either of those scenarios work for me.

Mom of a Teenager Shares Tips on How to Teens Can Use Their Phones for Real World Experience

Raising kids is tough, so if you’re currently slogging through the long, interrupted nights with potty-training toddlers, well…I’m sorry to say that even though things will be different one day, that doesn’t mean they’re going to be easier.

Teens especially are leading completely different lives than their parents did thirty or forty-odd years ago, so we might often wonder what sort of wisdom we can offer when it comes to navigating this brave new world.

One mom of a teenager has some advice on using technology to prepare your almost-adult for taking on life after living at home, and personally, I’ll definitely be taking notes.

1. Have them conduct internet research for your family.

If you need to kill weeds or replace a fence or put your dog in day care or rent a car – anything you’d normally do, your kid can do (but of course double check!).

2. Have them pay medical bills.

If you get a medical bill, show them where to find the service date and invoice number and then sit there while they call or pay online.

3. Have them make actual phone calls to get help when something breaks.

Using the phone to make calls is a chore, but when our internet breaks, the water heater goes out, etc, your kid can make the calls and set up the appointments on their own.

4. Let them schedule their own appointments.

It might be time for them to schedule their own haircuts and dentist appointments, but make sure they actually get it done.

5. Have them renew your driver’s license or voter’s registration.

It can be intimidating to navigate official government processes, so why not let them practice while you’re still there as a safety net?

6. Let them order groceries online.

Online grocery shopping is amazing – and something everyone should know how to do when they’re on their own.

Show them how to re-order necessities, to check the pantry for recipe components, and to stay within a budget.

7. Make them responsible for cooking dinner once a week.

They should choose the recipe, make sure the ingredients get on the online grocery list, and then make the dinner for the family once a week.

8. Teach them how to use Microsoft Excel.

Use it to make a packing list, a personal budget, a schedule of activities – it doesn’t matter what for as long as they’re figuring out how to use the program.

9. Help them learn PowerPoint.

Like with Excel, PowerPoint is something they’ll likely need in college and, depending on their profession, beyond.

They can make birthday presentations, Mother’s Day presentations, etc – you could even use it as a punishment if they’ve done something wrong.

There you have it – I’m not sure my husband can do all of these things, honestly, so I’ll definitely be making sure my sons can before they call themselves grown ups.

What do you do to try to use technology as a teaching tool? Are you going to try any of these in your home?

Talk to us in the comments!

Some Parents Are Annoyed by a Hospital Poster Shaming Them for Looking at Their Cell Phones

We all have to answer questions in this day and age about how much, how often, when and where we choose to pick up our phones. Sometimes we’re reading emails from work, or answering texts from friends or family or looking up a recipe for dinner, and other times we might be scrolling through Facebook or keeping up with the latest snark on the news on Twitter.

The truth is that your kids have no idea what the difference is – they see you staring at your phone and they know you’re not paying attention to them, full stop.

It’s complicated, and we all have to decide for ourselves what we want technology in our homes to look like.

The personal nature of those choices is probably why new parents want to snarl at a hospital poster suggesting they’re going to screw up their brand-new bundle by picking up their phones instead of staring lovingly into their sleeping (or screaming) faces.

Even worse – this was posted in a U.K. version of a NICU, meaning that the parents there spend long, stressful hours waiting for the day they can take their child home.

And, if they’re anything like me (who had a healthy, if pissy, newborn), most of the things they’re staring at on their device are answers to panicked questions about all things baby and motherhood.

The sign reads “Mummy and Daddy, Please look at ME when I am feeding. I am much more interesting than your phone!!”

Surely, the person who wrote it intended it as a reminder of the importance of bonding, but it definitely comes across as shaming in a place where added stress is the very last thing anyone needs.

During those long, late hours spent feeding, worrying, and just disconnected from the real world in general, our devices can be like a lifeline to other people – something not to be discounted, even if moderation is obviously key.

The Yeovil District Hospital responded to the outcry with a statement:

“These posters were created by our Special Care Baby Unit nurses following UNICEF baby-friendly accreditation training and have been in place for a few months. They are intended to be used only within the context of the unit, where we support mums of premature or very poorly babies in building a healthy connection.”

Twitter clapbacked at that as well…

Which is fine, but someone should definitely work on their wording. A simple statement about the importance of bonding with premature infants would have sufficed.

Postpartum is a hard enough time, and we’re already questioning literally everything we’re doing – the last thing new parents need is the hospital staff pouring on more of the same.

What do you think? Good reminder or should the hospital just mind their own business?

A Newly Discovered Weed Compound Might Be 30 Times More Potent Than THC

This is great news for anyone who’s ever used cannabis and thought to themselves, “Boy, I wish I was 30 times higher.”

A newly-discovered cannabinoid called THCP could potentially be over 30 times more potent than THC, according to recent reports.

THCP stands for tetrahydrocannabiphorol. It was discovered alongside another previously unknown compound called CBDP. The latter compound seems to be a “cousin” to CBD, another popular cannabinoid that is often used for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anticonvulsant effects.

There are almost 150 cannabis compounds, and not all of them cause a psychoactive effect (or in other words, get you high). THC does, while CBD does not. Those are the two most-studied compounds in cannabis.

It hasn’t yet been determined whether THCP creates a psychoactive effect in humans or not.

But in the lab, THCP has been shown to be 30 times more potent than THC. This is because it has a longer alkyl side chain, which is “the driving force behind a cannabinoid’s effects on humans,” CNN reports. While most cannabis compounds (including THC) have a five-atom chain, THCP has a seven-atom one.

If this new compound does have the ability to get you high, then that might explain why some strains of weed are stronger than others — more-so than can be explained by THC alone.

Dr. Cinzia Citti, lead author of the research, told CNN,

“In cannabis varieties where THC is present in very low concentrations, then we can think that the presence of another, more active cannabinoid can explain those effects.”

Cannabis compounds can be hard to isolate and study — not to mention all the legalization stuff. So it’s unlikely you’ll see THCP for sale anytime soon.

Still, the research is fascinating and promising!

A 330-Million-Year-Old Shark Head Was Found Inside a Cave in Kentucky

Kentucky is synonymous with fried chicken and horse racing.

Apparently we need to add sharks to the list.

Scientists recently discovered a shark skull inside a cave in Kentucky that dates back quite a few years. And we’re not talking a few decades.

The 330-million-year-old skull was found in the 400-mile long Mammoth Cave National Park, which just so happens to be the longest known cave system in the world.

Shark fossils of Mammoth Cave National Park

A post shared by John-Paul Hodnett (@desertsabertooth) on

Rick Olson and Rick Toomey, who both work as Mammoth Cave scientists, found the fossil. John-Paul Hodnett led a team of paleontologists in identifying the fossil as one that originated in the Late Missisippian geological period that occurred between 358 to 323 million years ago.

Hodnett could hardly contain his excitement over the unique discovery.

“There’s hardly ever any record at all of sharks’ teeth coming from these rocks,” he told CNN. “So this is a brand new record of sharks from a particular layer of time.”

The Rick duo that found the fossil buried within the limestone cave walls has been hard at work mapping a part of the Kentucky cave system.

Hodnett’s team eventually excavated a 2.5-foot portion of the shark’s jaw. Based on the jaw size, the prehistoric animal would have measured comparably to a modern great white shark.

A post shared by John-Paul Hodnett (@desertsabertooth) on

While the discovery was certainly impressive, it isn’t close to the oldest shark fossil found. Fossilized skin scales of sharks dating back to 450 million years ago were found in Colorado and Central Australia. In fact, the oldest shark teeth on record were found from the Devonian Period, which took place between 418 to 358 million years ago.

“Mammoth Cave has a rich fossil shark record and there’s still much more to uncover,” Hodnett said.

I guess the discovery would qualify as big news, after all.

You Can Now Turn off Those Awful Autoplay Previews on Netflix

The year 2020 has been pretty shitty so far, but at least one marvelous thing has happened: Netflix will finally stop autoplaying every single preview that you scroll past.

For what feels like ages, Netflix’s autoplay feature has been non-optional. Every single Netflix user has had to deal with the jarring clips that immediately play as soon as you hover over a certain title. You could turn the sound off, but still, it was really annoying. It made trying to find something new to watch that much harder (and it was already pretty hard).

But! Netflix recently announced that “members can now control whether or not they see autoplay previews on Netflix.”

Needless to say, people are so excited that they basically had a party on Twitter about it.

People had a lot of things to say about the good news.

But most importantly, how does one take advantage of this new option and TURN AUTOPLAY PREVIEWS THE HELL OFF?

First, sign into your account. Then click the profile icon in the top right corner to reveal the drop-down menu and select “Manage Profiles.” Click the profile you want to edit.

You’ll see that “Autoplay previews while browsing on all devices” appears as one setting. It’s automatically checked, so you just uncheck it and voila! You can scroll in peace.

Finally.

Discover How Long It Takes to Double Your Investments by Using the Rule of 72

For young workers, a paycheck and maybe even health insurance benefits are the primary reasons to get a job. But that paycheck will only take you so far if you aren’t smart about utilizing it to build more capital for the future.

Of course, investing is such a broad term that involves its own set of vocabulary that many of us simply aren’t taught in high school or college.

However, even if you’re new to the savings and investing game, it’s important that you know about how to double your money with the Rule of 72.

So what exactly is the magic behind the number 72?

By dividing the number 72 by the interest rate of your return, you can calculate the number of years it will take to double your investment.

This applies to all your financial accounts, including savings, money market accounts, index and mutual funds.

Lifehacker writer Nicole Dieker utilized her personal financial figures to illustrate just how the formula works.

Dieker’s Capital One 360 savings account earns an interest rate of 0.63 percent. By dividing 72 by that paltry figure, it would take Dieker 114 years to double her money.

At least her Vanguard investment accounts are in better shape, as they earn an average rate of return of 10.3 percent. In that case, it would only take Dieker seven years to double her money.

Financial tips like the Rule of 72 can be critically helpful for novice investors like myself. Delving into the world of stocks, mutual funds, cryptocurrency and everything in between can be daunting for those without a strong financial background.

When it comes to the Rule of 72, percentage points matter. So take the time and do your homework on potential investments before you fully commit.

Teenage Brothers Spent 8 Years Recreating ‘Toy Story 3’ With Real-Life Toys

I’m not sure if Toy Story 3 is the best of the entire franchise, but I can say for sure that, as a parent, it definitely made me cry the hardest.

And let’s be honest, that bar was already pretty high.

Eight years ago, these brothers fell in love with not only the film, but with the fanciful idea that toys came to life when we weren’t looking, and a little bit with storytelling and filmmaking, too.

Mason McGrew, the younger of the brothers, told Buzzfeed

“As soon as we saw Toy Story 3, it became our favorite film, and will forever be.

We’d always been such huge fans of Pixar and the Toy Story franchise that we eventually decided we wanted to pay tribute to the studio and film that we love so much.”

They’ve spent the intervening days and weeks re-creating the tale with their own toys, and y’all, the results are really something to behold.

The brothers used stop-motion animation to create the movie, and it looks exactly like you’d imagine it would if the toys were alive in real life, and not animated at Pixar.

Mason said that every 1 to 6 second clip could contain “more than 25 video elements.”

Morgan and Mason McGrew are from Des Moines, Iowa (please, no jokes about there being nothing better to do there!), and yes, they’ve remade the entire movie – shot for shot – with their very own toys.

They began working on it with Morgan was 15 and Mason was 12, and just finished.

Mason said,

“Overall, the hardest thing about this film was staying disciplined.

It was very important to us that we finish what we began as kids.”

The entire film is available to view on YouTube, and look at that! We’ve got it for you to watch.

You’re welcome…

Morgan is now 23 and has finished his degree in digital media/business at Buena Vista University. His brother Mason is 21 and in his final semester at the same school, soon to have the same degree under his belt.

Both of them hope to work with stop-motion animation as a career and honestly, I don’t see how anyone could turn them down!
