The process of dry cleaning…

The process of dry cleaning was invented in 1821 by an African American business owner named Thomas Jennings. He was one of the first African Americans to be granted a patent. He had to use the proceeds from his invention to buy his wife and children out of slavery.

20 Underrated Horror Movies You Should Check out ASAP

I unapologetically love horror movies. All of ’em. I love cheesy ones from the ’80s, I love masterpieces like The Shining, I love foreign ones, I love ones that fly under the radar.

Buzzfeed asked their Community what they think are underrated horror films that are often overlooked.

Here are 20 that you should check out ASAP, complete with comments from the Buzzfeed Community. Try not to get too creeped out watching these trailers…

1. Zombie (1979)

“This is a different kind of zombie movie that is not only crazy awesome with the effects, but gives you a chuckle every once in a while with how outlandish some of the dialogue is. It is truly a must-see for all of my zombiephiles out there.”

2. Sleepaway Camp (1983)

“This movie disturbed me on so many levels. The subject matter covered and some of the imagery they got away with 36 years ago is shocking by today’s standards.”

3. Hell House, LLC. (2015)

“This movie truly made me piss-in-my-pants level scared for the first time EVER. It’s a found-footage horror film about a small group of friends who find older houses/locations to host incredibly scary haunted houses in around the country. It has a really good mix of jump scares and suspense and kept me lying awake in bed for hours after watching it.”

4. The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014)

“It has a really good story that actually takes the time to develop while maintaining all the best elements of horror. I’ve seen it several times and people I have suggested it to agree with me.”

5. In the Mouth of Madness (1994)

“Truly the most underrated of John Carpenter’s films. This one completely freaked me and my husband out. I don’t want to give TOO much away, but let’s just say that it definitely does NOT have a feel-good ending.”

6. Dead Alive (1992)

“This is just a classic in the camp/gore genre. We can’t be friends unless you’ve at least given it a chance!”

Also, Peter Jackson of The Lords of the Rings fame directed this splatterfest.

7. Resolution (2012)

“This one does Cabin in the Woods better than Cabin in the Woods. It has a lot of fun with the horror genre without ever going over-the-top. It’s a great film in general and I often tell people it’s the best horror movie post-2000.”

8. Macabre (2009)

“If you haven’t seen this Indonesian horror/thriller, then you need to jump on Amazon and buy it ASAP. What starts off as a simple “finding a stranger in distress while driving” story quickly leads to the most excellent game of cat-and-mouse I’ve seen on-screen in a very long time.”

9. Found (2012)

“A 12-year-old boy finds out his horror-film obsessed teenage brother has a human head in his closet. I don’t want to spoil anything past that, but it is disturbing and unexpected from beginning to end.”

10. High Tension (2003)

“I’ve never been more disturbed in the first 15 minutes of a movie than when I first watched this one. It’s highly suspenseful and incredibly violent. A well done movie, but I don’t think I’ll ever be able to watch it again.”

11. Mirrors (2008)

“I worked myself up to a near heart attack each time I got in the shower for at least a week (probably two) after seeing this movie. Seriously, the first time I showered after I saw this, I was so freaked out that I actually whimpered when I thought I saw something move from the corner of my eye. I was 25 at the time.”

12. Under the Skin (2013)

“This is an unsettling, beautifully-shot film starring Scarlett Johansson, in what I personally think is her best role to date. It’s about an alien seductress…and I’ll leave it at that. DO NOT look up spoilers or trailers, just watch it — if you can make it through to the end.”

13. Ghost Story (1981)

“I think this one’s underrated just because it’s largely been forgotten. Spoilers, but there’s a scene where they try to cover up the woman’s accidental death by pushing her car into the water, but she starts moving at the last minute before the car goes under and they realize they’ve murdered her…I saw that scene when I was a young kid and it burned into my memory. That was more disturbing to me than any jump scare.”

14. The Houses October Built (2014)

“It’s about this group of people making a documentary to find the most intense haunted house. It’s a little slow to start but, once stuff starts happening, it hits the fan full-force. For a while I forgot I was even watching a horror movie until it kicked in, and I think that made it even better because it catches you unaware.”

15. Creep (2014)

“This movie kept getting recommended to me on Netflix forever before I finally gave in and watched it. At just over an hour long, it’s so simple and only has two actors. It has a great sense of timing, making things really suspenseful. It was the first movie in a while that made me want to sleep with the lights on.”

16. Thirst (2009)

“It’s an absolutely amazing Korean horror film by the same director who made Oldboy about a priest-turned-vampire and his love interest. It’s so visually stunning and has a great plot.”

17. The Changeling (1980)

“My mom and I used to watch horror movies together all the time when I was a kid, and this one has stuck with me the most. It doesn’t rely on gratuitous gore. If you haven’t seen it yet, you need to!”

18. Stir of Echoes (1999)

“This was filmed in Chicago and I lived a block down from the house. I would absolutely dread passing it!”

19. Paperhouse (1988)

“It’s about a little girl who has nightmares about a house that she draws. Reality and fantasy begin mixing together, and her alcoholic dad is also a part of it. It’s spooky and weird and was made by the same director as the classic Candyman!”

20. The Forest (2016)

“I’ve seen many horror movies and this is probably one of the best I’ve seen so far. It’s generally terrifying, and it messes with your head.”

Happy watching! And remember…DON’T GO IN THERE!

Similar to a croissant, this French pastry has flaky, buttery layers and the center contains chocolate. I’m drooling like Homer Simpson right now…

3. Pastelitos – Cuba

Delicious Cuban puff pastries filled with savory and sweet stuffings, such as guava, cream cheese, or minced meat. These sound amazing.

4. Boh Loh Bao – Hong Kong

Also known as “pineapple buns,” these are a Hong Kong staple. They feature a sugar-crusted topping and can be eaten plain or slathered with butter. Yum.

5. Ensaymada – Philippines

View this post on Instagram

Ensaymada aka Filipino brioche is a soft, fluffy, buttery, slightly sweet bun topped with cheese. Another meryenda (afternoon snack) favourite best paired with coffee or tea. No skimping on butter and cheese here! This version is made from fathead dough, it turned out good but it’s not as fluffy as the real thing. I made another version with vital wheat gluten- see next post!☺ PS. Only 2NC per serve ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ ┈ Cheesy Keto Ensaymada Dough: 1.5C shredded mozzarella cheese 1 egg 1T-2T sweetener (or to taste) 3/4C almond flour (for this recipe I used half lupin flour and half almond) 1tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp xanthan gum 1/8 tsp salt Filling: 2T butter, softened Toppings/Frosting: 4T butter, softened 1C cheddar cheese, grated 2T sweetener (or to taste) Method: 1. Microwave mozzarella cheese in a bowl for 60-90sec. Add egg, stir until incorporated. Add dry ingredients and mix well. 2. Preheat oven to 150°C 3. Divide dough into 8 portions. 4. On a silpat or parchment paper, roll out each piece of dough into a rectangle. Brush a little melted butter over the top of the dough. 5. Roll dough into a log, pinch ends together to seal. Then turn dough seam side down or seam side facing inwards, in the direction where you’ll start twirling. Curl it into a coil. 6. Place on cupcake liners or baking pan. 7. Bake for 15-20min. Note that this will vary from oven to oven 8. Once cooled, add the toppings – butter with sugar and then all the cheese 9. A brioche-based pastry that is topped with sweet cheese and has a wonderful buttery flavor. Often served with hot chocolate and strawberries.

6. Deblah – Tunisia

Deblah are often made using a pasta roller which results in a delicate, flower-shaped pastry. They are fried and typically topped with sesame seeds and citrus syrup.

7. Koeksister – South Africa

A braided and fried South African treat that is topped with syrup. Similar to American donuts but the process of making them results in a crunchy exterior and a syrup-filled center.

8. Pâté chaud – Vietnam

Vietnamese pies filled with meats, usually pork. They come in different shapes, too!

9. Macheteadas – Honduras

Fried, flat disks that are made using leftover flour tortilla dough. People usually put butter, honey, or syrup over them.

10. Stroopwafel – Netherlands

The translation means “syrup waffle,” so you know it’s gonna be a tasty treat. The top and bottom of the pastry are actually from the same waffle, cut in two. Stroopwafels are usually placed over a hot cup of coffee or tea until they start to melt, so you can enjoy a gooey delight.

11. Cornetto – Italy

The Italian cornetto has less butter and more of a cake-like texture than the French croissant, even though they look very similar. People usually spread jam, butter, or custards on their cornetto for a delicious treat.

12. Gugelhupf – Austria

There is debate about where this pastry originated, but it is one of Austria’s favorite breakfast treats. These yeast-based cakes are usually filled with nuts or fruits (and brandy!) and are dusted with sugar or cocoa. Cake for breakfast. Oh yeah!

I’ll take two of each!

Sesame Street Characters Reenacted ‘Sabotage’ by the Beastie Boys. Take a Look.

When the Sabotage video hit the airwaves, it was a game-changer. Suddenly, the Beasties were back on top and firmly in the public consciousness like they hadn’t been in years.

The Sabotage video was directed by Spike Jonze and was a throwback to 1970s-style cop TV shows such as Starsky and Hutch and Baretta. It was a brilliant idea and executed perfectly. To be honest, music videos had become a little boring by the time the Sabotage video came out in 1994, and the Beastie Boys injected some fun and humor back into MTV, which seemed to be all doom and gloom with the explosion of grunge. Here’s a refresher.

I think people can argue that the Sabotage video set the stage for such later classic videos as Weezer’s Buddy Holly.

The Sesame street video was made by Mylo the Cat (aka Adam Schleichkorn) using footage from the 1985 Sesame Street film Follow That Bird. He’s previously gained fame for video mashups such as Barney the Dinosaur doing The Notorious B.I.G’s Get Money.

Is it silly? Yes. Is it goofy? Absolutely.

The mashup works well for these videos because, like the original video, there’s a lot of running around and people getting chased, this time it just happens to be Big Bird.

I think this is one of the better mashup videos I’ve ever seen, to be honest. Here’s the entire video for you to enjoy.

Oh, and, RIP MCA.

A Blind Golden Retriever and His Guide Dog Are BFF and It Is Beautiful

Take a look at these adorable pups! This is what friendship goals look like!

Jake and Addie are inseparable not only because they’re devoted to each other, but because Jake is blind and Addie acts as his guide dog. Jake lost his sight when he was only 2-years-old and Addie has been a loyal friend and helper every step of the way. Jake and Addie’s owner Kim said, “Jake follows Addie’s sound and smell. After Jake’s surgery, Addie wore a little bell on her collar for a while until he got used to tracking her on his own.”

Jake’s owners were worried about his quality of life after he had to have his eyes removed, but they were reassured that blind dogs can go on to live happy, fulfilling lives. And, by the looks of it, Jake is doing just that.

Kim added, “Our vet also counseled us that, to a dog, sight is actually number 3 on their list of senses, as both smell and hearing are more important to them.”

Take a look at these two best friends and all the adventures they go on together!

Here Are 7 Scientific Benefits of Kissing

You’re in for a treat because these 7 scientifically proven benefits might convince you to keep puckering up far into your golden years!

7. It can boost your immunity.

Kissing is fun, sure, but it’s also a bacteria exchange. On a bad day that could give you a virus, but the upside is that the more germs your immune system is exposed to, the better your body will be at fighting bacteria and viruses in the future.

A 2014 study found that couples who kiss frequently (at least 9 times per day) are more likely to share bacteria, so get working on that.

6. It releases endorphins.

The brain’s reward system releases feel-good chemicals like oxytocin when your lips touch, which helps us bond and improves our mood. It also reduces stress hormones, freeing your body up to rest from the cumulative crap weighing on your mind.

5. It could reduce your allergy symptoms.

At least one Ig Nobel-winning study proved that habitual kissing (and the reduced cortisol that comes from it) can help people who struggle with seasonal allergies.

4. It can give you a jolt.

Kissing can also stimulate the release of adrenaline and noradrenaline, both of which increase your heart rate, make you more alert, and prepare you for action.

Heh.

Who needs coffee?

3. It could keep the dentist away.

Kissing encourages the production of saliva, which helps remove cavity-causing particles that can stick in your teeth after a meal. No dentists have weighed in, but I mean, it definitely can’t hurt!

2. It reduces stress – and cholesterol.

According to affection exchange theory, physical exchanges of affection “buffer the individual against the physiological effects of stress.”

The same study authors theorize that if affectionate behavior reduces stress, “then it is logical to predict that it will also effect improvements on physiological parameters that are exacerbated by stress” such as cholesterol. Cholesterol has a number of essential physiological functions, they write, “including maintaining membrane fluidity, producing bile, and contributing to the metabolism of fat-soluble vitamins.” It’s also “largely responsible” for the production of steroid hormones, such as cortisol, aldosterone, progesterone, the estrogens, and testosterone.

1. It’s good for the overall health of your relationship.

Romantic kissing, as well as other forms of physical contact, strengthens feelings of attachment and increases the feeling over overall satisfaction between partners.

A 2013 study found that couples who kiss more often feel happier and more satisfied in their relationship (and the same correlation was not found when people had more sex, interestingly).

Mwah!

Scientists Discovered a Giant Structure Under the Surface of the Moon

Space keeps getting less and less mysterious every day, doesn’t it?

This most recent discovery concerns the South Pole-Aitken Basin on the moon, one of the largest preserved impact craters in the Solar System. The US and China, among others, have been particularly interested in the area, and now NASA’s Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory mission has discovered something truly massive beneath it.

The structure weighs 2.18 billion kilograms and stretches more than 186 miles deep, suggesting that it might be leftover from the asteroid that formed the crater, says lead author Peter B. James.

“Imagine taking a pile of metal five times larger than the Big Island of Hawaii and burying it underground. That’s roughly how much unexpected mass we detected.”

The mission was out to measure subtle changes in the gravitational field of the moon, then use the observations to study the moon’s internal composition, but what they discovered was a surprise to everyone involved.

View this post on Instagram

“The vast loneliness up here of the Moon is awe-inspiring, and it makes you realize just what you have back there on Earth. The Earth from here is a grand oasis to the big vastness of space.” — Apollo 8 astronaut Jim Lovell Fifty years ago today, this iconic 'Earthrise' photo was taken aboard Apollo 8 by Bill Anders. Before humanity ventured to the Moon, our view of our home planet consisted of what we could see from horizon to horizon. It was not until this stunning photo (along with many others) came back to Earth with the three Apollo 8 astronauts in December 1968 that we saw Earth as a vibrant, delicate, blue and white globe framed by the velvety blackness of space. This iconic picture shows Earth peeking out from beyond the lunar surface as the first crewed spacecraft circumnavigated the Moon. Image credit: NASA #space #earth #nasa #earthrise #moon #lunar #earth #iconic #picoftheday #1968 #apollo8 #apollo #astronaut #astronomy #planet #science

A post shared by NASA (@nasa) on

“When we combined that [data] with lunar topography data from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, we discovered the unexpectedly large amount of mass hundreds of miles underneath the South Pole-Aitken basin. One of the explanations of this extra mass is that the metal from the asteroid that formed this crater is still embedded in the Moon’s mantle.”

The team isn’t sure exactly what they’ve found at this point, though computer simulations indicate it is possible that when an asteroid hit the moon roughly 4 billion years ago it embedded itself in the mantle, never sinking into the moon’s core.

Another theory is that the mass formed when the moon was still solidifying – as the magma of the moon cooled and hardened, perhaps a concentration of oxides may have developed.

More research will follow, but anything we learn from the unique basin should help scientists understand how and when the moon formed, as well as give us an idea as to how it might weather an impact from an asteroid in the future.

And when it comes to space, the more information we have, the better.
