Here’s How 3 U.S. Soldiers Fooled 15,000 Nazis into Surrendering During WWII

There were some truly awesome war stories that came out of World War II, but the story of a  U.S. soldier named Moffatt Burriss might be one of the absolute best.

In April 1945, Burriss was in Berlin as the war was winding down. He received orders from none other than General Dwight D. Eisenhower himself that he needed to stand down and let Russian troops take control of the city.

By this point, Burriss had seen heavy combat in the Battle of the Bulge and in battles in Italy and the Netherlands, and he didn’t want to let the Russians take all the credit in Berlin.

Burriss recalled, “I said: ‘I can’t stand this any longer.’ I got in my Jeep with the lieutenant and sergeant and said, ‘Let’s go across the river and see what we can see, see if there are some [krauts] still over there…’”

That’s just the beginning of the tale. Watch the video of Burriss telling the rest of the amazing story in the video below.

After World War II, Burriss went on to become a successful businessman and a politician. He served in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1977 to 1992. Burriss died in January 2019 at the age of 99.

A true American hero!

Here’s How to Unlock Facebook Messenger’s New ‘Dark Mode’

If you’re like me, you’re on Facebook Messenger all day long. Not only do I use it to talk to all my friends and family, but a lot of my work conversations are also actually on Messenger too! Staring at those message windows all day can be pretty taxing on the eyes, which is why I was pretty stoked to take advantage of its newest feature.

Facebook recently rolled out a secret “dark mode” for Messenger that features white text on a black background for two reasons: to lessen eye strain for users late at night and to save battery.

You want in on this action, don’t you? Well, it’s a pretty simple process to unlock the hidden feature.

He’s what you need to do: in Facebook Messenger, send someone the “crescent moon” emoji, like this: ? .

Then you’ll see a whole bunch of moons falling from the top of the screen and you’ll be prompted to enable the dark mode option for Facebook Messenger. You’ll now see the new option in the app’s settings.

As you can see, the feature is now working for both iOS and Android.

And there you have it! I love it when a plan comes together!

Try it out for yourself, it really is easy on the eyes!

Gorgeous Wolfdog Saved by Sanctuary After His Owner Dumped Him at a Kill Shelter

It’s the kind of sad story that we hear all too often: an animal is adopted, only for the owners to quickly determine that the new pet is too much work/not what they expected, so they turn them over to a shelter or just abandon them altogether.

Such was the case with Yuki, a wolfdog that someone purchased from a breeder and then turned over to a kill shelter when he was only 8 months old.

Luckily, fate intervened for Yuki, and the Shy Wolf Sanctuary in Florida stepped in to rescue the large wolfdog.

Although Yuki looks absolutely enormous in this photo, Brittany Allen, who works at Shy Wolf Sanctuary, said,  “The face we make when people say Yuki’s picture is Photoshopped… It’s just his fat angle guys. We all have one.” In fact, despite how big he looks, Yuki only weighs 120 pounds.

Yuki was dropped at the kill shelter all the way back in 2008. One of the staff members at the shelter summed up the wolfdog’s personality:

“Yuki is one of those animals that he lets you know if he wants you in his enclosure or not. He has a very small group of women that he allows in his enclosure called his ‘harem’.”

The Shy Wolf Sanctuary was founded in 2001 and provides sanctuary to not only wolfdogs and wolves, but to other exotic animals as well. Domestic animal services are not allowed to adopt wolfdogs, so this sanctuary is often their last option.

Wolfdogs have a mixture of personality traits and therefore have unpredictable behavior, which makes them very difficult to raise as traditional pets.

10+ People Share the Brutal Truth They Learned from Failed Relationships

Breakups are rough, but they can also be a valuable learning experience – they help teach us what we really need from a relationship, what our own flaws are, and even what kinds of red flags to look out for.

That said, maybe the lessons learned by these 12+ people can save you some time (and heartache) the next time around.

#1. When it comes to kids.

“You can love each other as much as you can but if you’re not compatible when it comes to kids, future goals, etc it’s just not going to work out.”

#2. Not your responsibility.

“Sometimes, their mental health is not an excuse to stay with someone. Sometimes, you just need to let that go and it is not your responsibility to keep them healthy. If something does happen to them, it’s not your fault.
You can’t fix someone’s mental health. They can only do that themselves.”

#3. Don’t date a drinker if…

“Don’t date a drinker when you’re not one yourself.”

#4. Poor boundaries.

“I have poor boundaries and I’m too eager to please while simultaneously being too demanding.

Edit: Lol I wonder if I’ll tell her I got my first 1k comment over her.”

#5. Red flags.

“Cheating is a non-negotiable red flag.

Refusing to take responsibility is a red flag.

Ignoring your s/o is worse than arguing against your s/o which are both infinitely worse than communicating with one another about the topic at hand.

And the best one: you have to love yourself more than you love being in a relationship.”

#6. More red flags…

“If she gets fired from >10 jobs in 6 years because nobody can stand working with her…

That’s a red flag…

Edit: I guess the lesson would be to notice how other people that spend 8hrs a day with her….”

#7. It takes two.

“It takes two to make it work. And I was the only one doing any work, hoping if i worked hard enough, he would love me back as much as I loved him.

Doesn’t work that way.”

#8. Take them at their actions.

“if someone acts like they don’t care, its because they don’t care”

#9. The rest of your life.

“Dont put the rest of your life aside, when they leave you are then left with nothing.”

#10. You can’t stop them.

“People are who they are, not who you wish they would be. Loving someone and wanting a future with them won’t stop them from being a toxic person. And the only good option with toxic people is to get them out of your life. Even if it hurts.”

#11. You’ll never be able to be yourself.

“If you start the relationship by editing yourself and hiding the parts of you that you think they won’t like, it’s a trap and you’ll never be able to be yourself. Tears will follow. Do yourself a favor and at a reasonable point in the early relationship, be vulnerable and tell them all the things about yourself you are afraid of admitting. They’ll find them out eventually anyway….”

#12. Not great for each other.

“Accepting that life happens and sometimes two great people are not great for each other.”

#13. You can’t love away the issues.

“You can’t love away the depression. She self medicated with alcohol, and my love wasn’t enough to make her stop drinking.”

#14. Abusive households.

“Just because you both grew up in abusive households doesn’t mean the other person will be reluctant to abuse you.”

#15. How you react to this quirk.

“Everyone has a quirk. Everyone. Even you- you just might not know what it is. Day to day survival of a relationship can depend on how you react to this quirk. I dated a lot of guys who would just annoy the piss outta me daily with their quirks, and I’m not contributing our break ups solely to these habits, but it definitely didn’t help to be annoyed or disgusted on the daily by your partner. It took me some time to realize that this is just a part of who they are and I will never be able to change that. Learn to accept people for the funny little things they do.”

Keep your eyes on the prize out there!

These 19 Photos Are Proof That Americans Do the Weirdest Things with Food

Having lived in America for well over a decade now, I admit there are a lot of things on this list that don’t seem as weird to me anymore. That said, when I first got here, there were definitely plenty of foods that had me confused AF. At the very least, I will say that Americans are… unrestrictedly creative with the things they do to food.

Women Working in Male-Dominated Industries Share Their Horror Stories on Twitter

I honestly can’t even imagine how tough it must be to be one of the only women in a male-dominated industry. One of my cousins actually fits that description, and the stories she’s told me are no joke.

Still, nothing compares to the Twitter replies on @lameravioli‘s post:

Yikes! She also shared a couple of other incidents:

Unfortunately, this is only the beginning. Here’s one from a restaurant manager:

And there’s this one about working in construction:

That’s frustrating on several levels. Here’s a fun one about working in a hardware store:

Here’s one about a pastor who wanted to file a complaint with the manager over pants, of all things:

Here’s another one about clothing:

This is just a small sample of the stories shared on this thread. There are so many more. Hats off to the women who are breaking barriers and working in male-dominated fields, and fellas, if you see this nonsense, call it out.

Apparently, There’s a Million-Dollar Treasure Hidden Somewhere in the Rocky Mountains

As I have gone alone in there

And with my treasures bold,

I can keep my secret where,

And hint of riches new and old.

Begin it where warm waters halt

And take it in the canyon down,

Not far, but too far to walk.

Put in below the home of Brown.

From there it’s no place for the meek,

The end is ever drawing nigh;

There’ll be no paddle up your creek,

Just heavy loads and water high.

If you’ve been wise and found the blaze,

Look quickly down, your quest to cease,

But tarry scant with marvel gaze,

Just take the chest and go in peace.

So why is it that I must go

And leave my trove for all to seek?

The answers I already know,

I’ve done it tired, and now I’m weak.

So hear me all and listen good,

Your effort will be worth the cold.

If you are brave and in the wood

I give you title to the gold.

Hidden somewhere within these words are all the clues you’ll need to find a million-dollar treasure. This poem is part of Forrest Fenn’s treasure, buried somewhere in the Rocky Mountains.

Forrest Fenn is a retired Air Force pilot turned “collector” (read: possible grave-robber and thief) of rare and interesting historical artifacts. He has, even by his own admission, skirted the law in acquiring the items and had plenty of mishaps and challenges along the way.

In 2010 he published a memoir detailing his adventures called The Thrill of the Chase, but given that he’s hardly a household name, it didn’t earn much attention – until it did.

One aspect of the book – a fantastical claim that the author had hidden a box that contains over a million dollars worth of artifacts and gold – has led to a growing group of mystery-chasers taking up the hunt.

The idea came to Fenn back in 1988. He was diagnosed with terminal kidney cancer and decided to shore up his legacy. He put together the chest of treasure and planned a trip to Colorado with the intention of dying beside the box…except he recovered from his kidney cancer. So he kind of put the whole thing on hold.

Then, when he turned 80, he figured he might as well see it through and (allegedly) left the treasure somewhere in the Rocky Mountains before publishing his mysterious poem that (allegedly) reveals its location.

The legend grew, getting national recognition on The Today Show in 2013 and making Fenn’s book a sensation. Buyers from Ecuador to Italy have read it and planned their own hunting trips to the American West in search of a treasure – there are websites dedicated to solving the clues, and several hundred people have trekked around, only to come up empty.

Actually, a few of those people never returned at all – there have been 4 confirmed deaths related to the hunt so far. The first was in 2016 when a middle-aged man went missing near Cochiti Lake in New Mexico. Since then, a 53-year-old man fell down a mountain and died, a Colorado pastor died in the Rio Grande, and a 31-year-old man drowned in the Arkansas River.

Fenn seems mildly concerned that his search has led to people’s deaths, saying that “the treasure chest is not under water, nor is it near the Rio Grande River. It is not necessary to move large rocks or climb up or down a steep precipice. Please remember that I was about 80 when I made two trips from my vehicle to where I hid the treasure.”

But consider this: Fenn has a reputation in the archeological world as a bit of a blow-hard, and admitted himself that his “natural instinct is to embellish just a little” so…is the treasure even real? Or could it be an elaborate hoax to win him fame (and book sales) at his advanced age?

Fenn has a lifetime habit of playing fast and loose with the law – and the truth. He has recovered items from protected areas and even robbed graves. He owns one of the most significant archaeological sites in New Mexico and refers to it as his “retreat” where he indulges in his passion.

The state of New Mexico disagrees, claiming Fenn is making a profit off the graves that exist on the ground around his property.

If you’re thinking about searching for Fenn’s treasure yourself, you might want to cozy up to his friends – he claims that a “close friend” has ben instructed to deposit his bones with the chest of goodies.

I’m honestly not sure whether that will make people want to find it more or less.
