How Lithium Makes Its Way From Salt Flats to Your Cell Phone

Chile’s Atacama Desert is one of the driest places on Earth, but it’s also home to buried treasure. The desert’s mineral-rich salt flats contain high concentrations of lithium—a key ingredient in the rechargeable batteries that power our smartphones, laptops, and electric cars. Mining companies “harvest” the lithium by pumping water through the salt beds and storing it in ponds. The sun evaporates the liquid, leaving minerals and salt behind, and this substance is refined into powder before being exported to countries around the globe, where it’s used to juice up electronics.

In the video above, Bloomberg journalist Ashlee Vance visits a lithium mine field operated by Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile (SQM), where he watches the beginning stages of lithium’s long journey from Chile’s salt flats to your cell phone—and spends a little time pondering the future of this essential material.

6 Things We Learned from Pizza Planet, the ‘Toy Story’ Punk Band

filed under: funny, music, pizza
Josh Willis // Pizza Planet

Pizza Planet is a “pizzacore” band from College Station, Texas. The duo consists of Josh Willis on drums and Nic Shields on guitar and vocals. Here’s the twist: all their songs are based on the movie Toy Story. Indeed, even their name refers to the pizza/arcade in the movie.

In their first EP released on Bandcamp, Escape From Pizza Planet, the band’s opening tune is “Snake In My Boot,” referring to Woody’s famous line when his string is pulled. Other songs include “Double Bypass Brain Surgery” (Sid’s disassembly/torture of toys), “The Claw,” “To Infinity,” “And Beyond.” (The last two songs are a little light on lyrics, with Shields simply hollering the song titles over grinding riffs.)

Here’s a quick phone video of the band performing “Snake In My Boot”:

It’s not every day that you encounter a band so singly dedicated to its premise, and having such fun doing it. In order to understand more about Pizza Planet, mental_floss conducted an email interview last week. Here are some keepers, lightly edited for clarity.

1. THEY ARE TRUE FANS OF TOY STORY

mental_floss: How old were you guys when Toy Story came out?

Nic Shields: I was almost 2.

Josh Willis: I was 3? Maybe a late 2. It’s definitely one of the first movies I remember watching.

mental_floss: When was the most recent time you saw Toy Story?

Shields: Probably 4 or 5 months ago.

2. THEY INVENTED “PIZZACORE”

mental_floss: … Your Bandcamp page says [your band is] “pizzacore.” Where does Pizza Planet fit in the world of musical genres?

Shields: …We are definitely pizzacore. Which I believe is a genre we invented.

3. NEITHER BAND MEMBER IS A “BUZZ” OR A “WOODY”

mental_floss: Would you describe yourselves as more like Buzz or Woody? (And why?) Alternately, is there some other character is the Toy Story universe you really identify with?

Shields: I want to feel like I am Mr. Shark because I just make fun of everybody all the time and enjoy mockery in general. And that’s exactly what this band is, mockery.

Willis: I really identify with Slinky, he’s super sarcastic but also I have the ability to stretch my body to absurd lengths.

4. THEY PUT ZERO EFFORT INTO THIS BAND, AND THAT’S OKAY

mental_floss: The message of the Toy Story movies (especially Toy Story 2) seems to boil down to, effectively, “Accept your situation and enjoy it while you can.” Does that message resonate with you?

Shields: (laughing) That’s exactly how I feel about this band because we put zero effort into it. We play in serious bands that we put time and effort into, but everybody just cares about our joke Toy Story band. So I’ve just learned to take whatever comes and stop trying.

Willis: Yeah, I’m in the same spaceship as Nic [Shields] on this one. I have a lot of disdain toward this band because of how little effort I’ve put into it and how little I care compared to my serious band that I drop a lot of time and care into and write about stuff that is important to me. But I’m learning recently to just accept it and enjoy it while it lasts.

mental_floss: How long does it take to write a typical Pizza Planet song?

Shields: About twice as long as it takes to play it.

Willis: None of our songs are longer than 2 minutes I don’t think. We usually practice maybe an hour a month. We weren’t kidding when we said pretty much zero effort is put into this band.

5. AUDIENCES HAVE MOSHED TO PIZZA PLANET

mental_floss: What’s the biggest audience you’ve ever played to, as Pizza Planet? How about the smallest?

Shields: Probably a little over 100, and smallest would probably be like 10.

Willis: Yeah, we played in a taco shop in Denton Texas called “Killers Tacos,” there was probably 100+ people there. They were moshing and going crazy enough that we had to tell them to calm down because I could feel the floor moving underneath us.

mental_floss: Does the audience understand the whole Toy Story thing? Like, do you explain it to them first?

Shields: Absolutely, we treat them like children and walk them through every song we play.

Willis: Yeah, we usually will describe what each song is about from the movies and between almost every song say “All our songs are about Toy Story” so hopefully nobody has misunderstood.

6. MORE SONGS ARE COMING

mental_floss: Any plans to record more Pizza Planet songs?

Shields: Yeah!

Willis: Yeah, we just booked studio time with a friend of ours, we’re going to re-record the original songs on our [EP Escape From Pizza Planet] plus some more songs. I think it’ll be like 10-11 songs total.

mental_floss: Have you learned anything doing this project?

Shields: That hard work doesn’t pay off and to not take anything too seriously.

Willis: Yeah definitely that I need to stop taking stuff as seriously with music. I’m just having a blast and doing stupid stuff with one of my best friends and if people are into it, whatever, and if they’re not, who cares? I’m in a band that plays music about Toy Story and you’re not. So yeah.

HOW TO FOLLOW THE BAND AND FIND THEIR MUSIC

For a bit more on the band and their dreams of getting a cease-and-desist order from Disney, read this article from The Daily Dot. Their Facebook page is a lot of fun, and their music is on Bandcamp.

We salute you, Pizza Planet—The Claw has chosen wisely.

Witch-Shaped Spoon Holder Is Perfect for All Your Bubbling Potions

Animi Causa / OTOTO

The next time you’re throwing your eye of newt into the cauldron, you might want to use a steam releaser to let out a little hot air. Agatha, a witch-shaped silicone tool, might be the right candidate.

Created by OTOTO (the kitchen gurus who also designed whimsical cookware like the Loch Ness tea infuser and this bed for your sponge), Agatha is a playful character that holds on to your spoon and simultaneously lets steam out of the pot—all while giving the appearance that she’s riding a broom. You can buy the kitchen helper on Animi Causa, a site that’s also slinging this device that turns radishes into Super Mario-themed mushrooms.

A LEGO’s-Eye-View: Outdoor Train Track

filed under: LEGO, trains, video

In this five-minute video, a LEGO train rides on an outdoor LEGO track. It’s going just one meter per second (just over two miles per hour), but because the tiny camera is mounted on the tiny train, the speed feels far faster.

The track runs 90 meters, and features some nice touches—tunnels, “boulders,” and countless twists and turns. When the train concludes its run, the journey repeats while the camera moves to a different part of the train.

Take your anti-nausea medicine and tune in:

If you like that, there’s a night version, and LEGO master BANANENBUURMANS’s website is intense.

10 Sundance Film Festival Gems That You Can Stream Right Now

The small mountain town of Park City, Utah is being invaded this week by thousands of movie lovers eager to see what’s premiering at the Sundance Film Festival. But you don’t have to be among them to enjoy the Sundance experience. Many of the festival’s past hits are available to stream into your own home, where presumably you will not have to stand in line or wear a parka. If you’d like to program your own mini-festival, here are 10 Sundance world premieres to get you started.

1. THE HOUSE OF YES (1997)

Where to watch it: Amazon/iTunes

Parker Posey, the undisputed Queen of Sundance in the 1990s, won a Special Jury Recognition for her performance in this dark comedy about an unstable, Jackie Kennedy-obsessed young woman who gets very upset when her twin brother (Josh Hamilton) brings home a fiancée. Dysfunctional hilarity ensues as the family’s old secrets come to light. The film was by Mark Waters, who later made Mean Girls.

2. HAMLET (2000)

Where to watch it: Amazon/iTunes

Sure, you’ve seen Hamlet before. But have you seen it set in modern-day New York City, with Ethan Hawke as the Dane, Kyle MacLachlan as Claudius, and Bill Murray as Polonius? Michael Almereyda (who made last year’s Experimenter) retains the Bard’s language while refitting everything to the present: Elsinore is a luxury hotel; eavesdropping is accomplished via hidden microphone; and instead of staging a play to embarrass his uncle, Hamlet makes an artsy short film. Nothing rotten here!

3. CHAIN CAMERA (2001)

YouTube

Where to watch it: Amazon

Want to feel hopeful about the future? Here’s a documentary showing that the kids are all right. Or at least they were in 1999 to 2000, when this was shot. Kirby Dick gave video cameras to 10 high school students and had them film themselves for a week before passing the cameras along to someone else. Sixteen kids’ weeks were chosen and distilled into the segments in Chain Camera, offering a unique view (and now something of a time capsule) of young life at the turn of the century.

4. MANIC (2001)

Where to watch it: Amazon

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, future stars of Sundance hit 500 Days of Summer, first appeared together in this low-key drama set in a juvenile psychiatric ward. (Don Cheadle is here, too, as their tough but sympathetic doctor.) Shot on digital video at a time when digital video tended to make things look cheap, Manic overcomes its aesthetic limitations with believable characters and totally natural performances.

5. PUMPKIN (2002)

Where to watch it: Amazon/iTunes

Christina Ricci plays a Southern California sorority blonde who’s paired up with a mildly disabled fellow named Pumpkin (Hank Harris) during a charity drive, disrupting her rich, clueless life. It’s a sunny, exaggerated satire—think Bring It On meets Heathers—and there’s an added level of curiosity: the directors, Anthony Abrams and Adam Larson Broder, never made another movie before or since.

6. THE STATION AGENT (2003)

Where to watch it: Amazon/iTunes

Tom McCarthy is up for two Oscars this year for directing and co-writing Spotlight, but he started his directing career (after more than a decade as an actor) with this enormously pleasant comedy about a surly dwarf (Peter Dinklage) who inherits a rural train depot and reluctantly becomes friends with the locals (including Patricia Clarkson and Bobby Cannavale). The film won Sundance’s Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award as well as the coveted, regular-people-like-this-too Audience Award.

7. THE SAVAGES (2007)

Where to watch it: iTunes/Amazon

Not to be confused with Savages, the 2012 Oliver Stone movie, The Savages is a sharply funny comedy starring Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman as over-educated, under-achieving siblings grappling with their father’s impending death and their own midlife crises. Writer-director Tamara Jenkins’ screenplay and Linney’s lead performance were actually nominated for Oscars in 2008, but the film largely slipped away from public consciousness after that.

8. WORLD’S GREATEST DAD (2009)

Where to watch it: Netflix/Amazon/iTunes

There are some red flags on this one: it’s a dark comedy about suicide, and it stars Robin Williams. To enjoy it requires not just a suspension of disbelief, but a suspension of taste. But if you can handle it, it’s hilarious, as Williams plays a high school teacher who writes fake diaries to change students’ perception of his loathsome son after the latter’s death. It was written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait, who has emerged as one of the most daring filmmakers in the business.

9. PARIAH (2011)

Where to watch it: Netflix/Amazon/iTunes

One of the more widely praised films at the 2011 festival was this drama about a 17-year-old black lesbian (Adepero Oduye) in Brooklyn trying to navigate her sexuality without upsetting her family. Coming-of-age dramas about gay teens aren’t rare (especially at Sundance), but this one has an air of raw authenticity that many lack, and it offers a glimpse into a corner of American culture that will be new to a lot of viewers.

10. THE SKELETON TWINS (2014)

Where to watch it: Amazon/iTunes

It was just two years ago that this dramatic comedy about suicidal siblings—played by Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig—made waves in Park City and earned the festival’s screenwriting prize. It went on to make just over $5 million in its limited theatrical release before being forgotten entirely. It deserved better, especially for fans of Hader and Wiig’s un-fakeable comic chemistry.

Watch: Free-Fallin’ in Bremen’s Zero-G Drop Tower

In Bremen, Germany, a 146-meter-high drop tower allows scientists to perform experiments in microgravity. As the name suggests, the tower is designed for experiments to literally drop from top to bottom, allowing for about 9.3 seconds of near-zero gravity.

There are drop towers around the world, but Fallturm Bremen offers the longest drop time of them all—in large part because they use a catapult system to get extra hang time on the way up. When the payload hits the bottom, a load of polystyrene breaks the fall.

In this video, Tom Scott visits the Bremen drop tower, explains the science, and shows us some footage from experiments inside. It’s fascinating technology, and every second counts. Don’t blink or you’ll miss it:

For more on the tower check out this page. For a bit more behind-the-scenes chat, here’s a bonus video in which Scott discusses the filming process.

8 Famous Songs Using Borrowed Tunes

filed under: music

Wikimedia Commons // Public Domain

The next time you proudly sing along with the U.S. national anthem at a sporting event, take a moment to consider that it was once a song about drinking and sex. “The Star-Spangled Banner” is an example of a contrafactum—when new words are added to an old tune. Some of the most well-known songs in history, like these eight, were once vastly different than what we’ve come to know today.

1. “TWINKLE, TWINKLE, LITTLE STAR” // “THE ALPHABET SONG” // “BAA BAA BLACK SHEEP”

Which song was the original? None of them. The tune is based on an old French folk song called “Ah, vous dirai-je, Maman” (“Ah, Mother, If I Could Tell You”). It was already popular when a young Mozart composed Twelve Variations on “Ah! vous dirai-je, maman” in the 1780s.

The three popular children’s songs are basic versions of the tune. As for which of them came first, “Twinkle Twinkle” was originally a poem published in 1806, but doesn’t appear to have been set to “Ah! Vous dirai-je, Maman” until 1838. “The Alphabet Song” (“A-B-C-D-E-F-G”) was published as “The Schoolmaster” in 1834, and “Baa Baa Black Sheep” existed under a different melody as far back as 1744. Of the three, It seems like the first to use the French tune was probably “The Alphabet Song,” but it’s hard to say for sure.

2. “THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER”

Though Francis Scott Key’s lyrics are unabashedly American, the tune they’re set to is anything but. Before it crossed the Atlantic, “The Star-Spangled Banner” was a British song called “To Anacreon in Heaven.” Written for a London gentlemen’s music club called the Anacreontic Society around 1775, the song originally celebrated Anacreon, an ancient Greek poet who enjoyed love, music, and wine.

3. “MY COUNTRY, TIS OF THEE”

The U.S. national anthem isn’t the only patriotic song to have originated elsewhere: Though “My Country, Tis of Thee” has more regal origins, its back story is similar to “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The song may have first appeared as “God Save Great George the King” sometime around 1740, and it’s still used today as “God Save the Queen/King”:

Baptist minister Samuel Francis Smith didn’t match American lyrics to it until 1831, while he was studying at Andover Theological Seminary. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the song also became the Danish national anthem, the Prussian national anthem, and the Liechtenstein national anthem, among others.

4. “HARK! THE HERALD ANGELS SING”

Before “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” was a Christmas carol celebrating the coming of the “newborn king,” it was a Felix Mendelssohn cantata that celebrated the coming of Johannes Gutenberg. Called “Festgesang zur Eröffnung der am ersten Tage der vierten Säcularfeier der Erfindung der Buchdruckerkunst,” the piece was written to honor the 400th anniversary of the invention of the printing press. In 1855, an English musician named William Cummings made a 1739 composition entitled “Hymn for Christmas Day” fit the Mendelssohn masterpiece. Today, of course, “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” is much better known than the Gutenberg cantata.

5. “AULD LANG SYNE”

Many people hear “Auld Lang Syne” exactly once a year, when the clock strikes 12 on New Year’s Eve. In Japan, the nostalgic song is much more commonplace—it’s used in many retail stores to notify customers that the store is closing soon. Instead of “Auld Lang Syne” (which is itself a mashup of an old folk song and a Robert Burns poem), the song is called “Hotaru no Hikari,” with lyrics about the various hardships suffered by a devoted student, including studying by the light of a firefly.

6. “WHAT CHILD IS THIS?”

This religious Christmas standard has come a long way since its 16th-century origins as an old English folk song. The original lyrics sang the praises of “Lady Greensleeves”—and there’s a theory that the term “greensleeves” is actually a reference to a prostitute.

Though rumors have long swirled that Henry VIII wrote the song for Anne Boleyn, they’re probably false—the song didn’t become popular until the reign of Henry’s daughter, Elizabeth I.

7. “YANKEE DOODLE DANDY”

You’ve probably been singing “Yankee Doodle” since before you can recall—it’s one of the most common folk songs in the U.S., not to mention the state anthem of Connecticut. But before it was a Fourth of July staple, the British sang it to make fun of the poor, ragtag colonists. And before it was theirs, the Dutch used it as a harvest song, using nonsense lyrics like “Yanker dudel doodle down.”

8. “MY WAY”

Few songs are as synonymous with a performer as “My Way” is to Frank Sinatra—but it wasn’t actually “his.” It started out as a French song called “Comme d’habitude,” written in 1967 by composers Claude François and Jacques Revaux.

Singer, songwriter, and onetime teen idol Paul Anka heard it while visiting Paris, thought there was something to it, and bought the rights. He eventually rewrote the lyrics specifically for Frank Sinatra, and the rest is history. Unfortunately, it seems Ol’ Blue Eyes got a little burned out on his hit. “He always thought that song was self-serving and self-indulgent,” his daughter Tina once told the BBC.

Global Consortium Aims to Create and Stockpile New Vaccines

An international coalition of researchers and public health officials have created a billion-dollar initiative to create and stockpile vaccines in the hope of preventing future epidemics. The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) launched January 18 at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

CEPI’s mission is simple: to prevent epidemics in the future by creating and amassing effective vaccines now. Vaccine development is a slow process, often requiring 10 or more years of research and testing before they’re ready and safe for human use.

But as we learned during the West African Ebola outbreak of 2013, disease epidemics don’t give us 10 years to catch up. Researchers were able to adapt existing experimental drugs to produce an effective vaccine in record time. Even that was too long to wait.

Jeremy Farrar is director of the Wellcome Trust, one of CEPI’s backing organizations. He remembers the 2013 outbreak with dismay. “We had to spend what was 9–12 months getting safety data for those vaccines, and that was 9–12 months where ultimately many people lost their lives,” he told Nature.

CEPI aims to eliminate those deadly months of lag time. Their research teams are first looking to create vaccines for the diseases most likely to cause massive outbreaks in the near future: Nipah virus, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), and Lassa fever.

Researchers say coalition members’ diverse backgrounds and expertise—from academia to business and government organizations—will be a huge asset to the project. “For too long, we have separated out the academic work from the next step of taking it into all that is actually required to make a vaccine,” Farrar told Nature.

The coalition has already secured $460 million USD in support from Norway, Germany, Japan, the Wellcome Trust, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and representatives say they expect to raise the rest by the end of 2017.
