This Is What Would Happen If You Actually Broke into Area 51

Area 51 seems to be all the rage right now.

Talk of storming Area 51 in order to find out the truth once and for all – and also because “they can’t stop all of us” – has captivated the internet recently.

Mostly because we all love laughing emojis.

Aside from the fact that the government has tanks and also nuclear weapons and could, if they wanted to, definitely stop all of us, the idea has spawned endlessly amusing memes and internet jokes.

That said, if you’re an alien-believer and know the truth is out there…you might be wondering what might happen if people really did push for a peek inside the storied government facility.

First off, the area belongs to the US military, and the Air Force has publicly warned that anyone approaching the area would be discouraged from “trying to come into the area where we train American armed forces.”

US law forbids trespassing on military bases (Section 1382 of Title 18) and says that anyone found breaking the law could be subject to six months in prison, a $500 fine, or both.

Area 51 is part of Edwards Air Force Base, which means it falls into the category protected by said law, and the signs posted around Area 51 suggest the government takes trespassing there seriously. They state that the area is restricted, that trespassing is illegal, and that “use of deadly force authorized.”

Which seems to indicate that you’re taking some pretty grave chances should you decide to storm the place.

An assumption backed up by the fact that, in 2017, the US military opened fire on a man who tried to break into a Royal Air Force base in the UK.

And that was just for a quiet base in the English countryside. It’s safe to say that Area 51 would be at least as rigorously defended.

In 2016, a television crew filming the BBC show “Conspiracy Road Trip” were arrested at gunpoint for approaching the restricted area, made to lie face-down on the ground, and forced to remain there for 3 hours while they passed security checks. They were eventually fined and let go.

Two years before that a tour bus inadvertently (they claimed) drove through the warning signs. The tour was pulled over by military armed with M-16s.

These attempts were deemed harmless and treated as such, but earlier this year, at least one man “with a cylindrical object in-hand” was shot dead near the Nevada National Security Site after failing to stop at a security gate.

If you decide you can afford the fine and want to go ahead with it, well…I guess try not to look too threatening. Maybe don’t carry any cylindrical objects?

Or just don’t. That’s probably the better idea.

A Billionaire Created a Fake Driveway to Score His Own Private Parking Spot in New York

Have you ever tried parking in New York City?

Wellllllll, parking in New York is a nightmare, so one billionaire took desperate measures to get his very own ‘permanent’ spot.

Noah Gottesman, a very wealthy hedge fund honcho, created the illusion of a driveway on his property where none exists. He now hands out parking violations to anyone who tries to park in front of it.

Noah lives in the West Village in Manhattan, in a corner compound on Jane and Washington Streets that he built himself over 10 years ago.

During a renovation, he illegally added a curb cut to the sidewalk outside his home to make it appear as if there’s a driveway at 777 Washington St.

He also added “No Parking” and “Active Driveway” signs to the large black door at the entrance to his complex.

Neighbors who have tried to use the spot have received parking tickets and even had their vehicles towed by Noah’s employees.

Obviously, Noah is not well-liked in the neighborhood.

“It’s all a scam. He doesn’t have a freaking driveway,” neighbor Eyal Levin told the NY Daily News. “He just has fake signs on it. He knows it, everybody knows it and still they try to intimidate everybody about it. I found it to be outrageous.”

Noah received a violation over the illegal curb cut earlier this year, and the Department of Buildings has stepped in to investigate the issue.

“This is a shameful abuse of public space that we won’t tolerate,” Mayor de Blasio spokeswoman Marcy Miranda told NY Daily news.

“The building owner needs to play by the same rules as everyone else, no matter how deep his pockets are, which is why we’ve instructed the Buildings Department to investigate further and take whatever enforcement actions are needed.”

An 89-Year-Old Woman Generously Knits Blankets for Shelter Dogs

If you’re a dog lover like me, it often hurts our hearts that we can only save so many of the good girls and boys who need homes and humans to love them. People who volunteer for shelters have the biggest hearts of all – seeing and assuaging suffering every single day and knowing the entire time that there’s only so much they can do.

When an English dog shelter, Dogs Trust, put out a call a few years ago for knitted dog coats, 89-year-old Maisie Green answered with gusto.

“Nifty with needles or handy with a crochet hook? We’re calling all crafty types to contribute home-made dog coats for our Hope Project Christmas hampers,” said the Dogs Trust Facebook page.

She’s been bringing in home-knitted blankets and coats three times a year for the past three years – around a dozen each time (around 450 total) – and has no plans to stop.

“I love knitting and I love dogs, so this combines both wonderfully! It takes me three days to knit a blanket and one day to knit a doggy coat. It keeps me busy and often, I like to knit whilst watching television. I’m delighted to be helping the four-legged residents at the center in some way,” Green said.

The dogs are happy, Maisie is happy, and the shelter is happy, too.

“Maisie regularly brings along her knitted donations and we are so grateful for her support. With the chill of the winter months really starting to creep up on us, I know our dogs are very pleased to put the items to good use – and love feeling extra cosy!” said the rehoming manager at Dogs Trust.

A win, win, win – and a bunch of too-cute pictures to boot!

These Penguins Disobeyed Police and Returned to Invade a Sushi Shop Twice

I don’t know about you, but I LOVE THIS STORY.

Meet the cutest criminals in perhaps the whole world.

Two penguins in New Zealand disobeyed police and hid under a sushi stand.

On the one hand, penguins have NO business being in or near a sushi shop. But on the other hand, penguins mainly eat fish, so…

You can see how they’d be tempted.

The little blue penguins hid underneath a sushi stand, Sushi Bi, across from a railway station in Wellington. Police “temporarily detained” the pair before releasing them back into Wellington Harbor, according to Radio New Zealand.

These birds seemingly have no respect for police authority! Even though they’d been returned to the harbor, they snuck across busy lanes of traffic to get from the station to the sushi bar a second time. At that point, the Department of Conservation was called to remove them.

You know – escalate to a higher authority.

These penguins are apparently common in Wellington Harbor, and at this time of year, they pair up and look for a spot to lay their eggs.

These two penguins just happened to choose the sushi shop, which is a first.  They’ll likely try to attempt to return to the same site to nest over and over again, despite the every attempt to remove them.

“It’s a natural characteristic of the penguins – they will always return to where they possibly were nesting,” explained Mike Rumble, a volunteer with the DOC.

Jack Mace of the DOC says that people should keep their distance from the penguins because they can bite. They are cute, but not harmless.

If anyone wants to start a petition to let the penguins nest under the sushi shop, though, I’ll definitely sign it!

Police Arrested a Man in Missouri After a Loud Fart Gave Away His Hiding Spot

Headline of the year? So far, I’d say yes.

Police officers in Liberty, Missouri, were hot on the trail of a man with a felony warrant out for his arrest – he was wanted for possession of a controlled substance – and about to pull out all of the stops. Fox9 reports that K-9 units had been called in to track his scent, but they were never deployed…

Because the guy let a fart rip so loudly that it gave away his hiding place.

I mean, that is some gas, if you can’t hold it in long enough to not get arrested.

If you’ve got a felony warrant for your arrest, the cops are looking for you and you pass gas so loud it gives up your hiding spot, you’re definitely having a ? day. ? #ItHappened

Posted by Clay County, Missouri Sheriff on Tuesday, July 9, 2019

The local police station had a bit of fun with the incident on their Facebook page (because how could you not?), and everyone who has read the story has had a similar (snort-laughing) response as well.

Here are some of the better ones (in this writer’s opinion).

“He had the right to remain silent, but he didn’t have the ability.”

“Boy, am I glad I caught wind of this story.”

“I fart the law and the law won.”

To be honest, I’m still not over it.

I swear, I’ll go to my grave wishing there was video.

Social Media Influencers Have Been Taking Pics with a Toxic Lake in Russia

So is “social media influencer” like, a job?

It is, unfortunately. And apparently finding the perfect background is an important part of being the best in your field.

Which is why so many influencers have taken a liking to the picturesque lake in the city of Novosibirsk, in Russia.

The waters are as turquoise as a tropical sea, and contrasted against the surrounding Siberian forest, well…there’s really no arguing that the scenery is Instagram-worthy.

Except for one this: It’s not actually a lake, but the containment pond a power plant uses as an ash dump. The Siberian Generating Company, who runs the plant, has put out a warning against swimming in the lake, which gets its beautiful color from  calcium salts and other metal oxides being pumped into the fairly shallow (3-6 feet deep) body of water.

Now, the lake isn’t radioactive or deadly – at least according to the power plant – but the cocktail of substances definitely certainly isn’t something you’d want in your bath water. It could lead to allergic reactions, among other unknown outcomes.

Not only that, but the bottom of the lake is muddy with ash deposits, meaning anyone walking in it could get stuck and require professional help to get out.
