A Homeless Mother Went to Jail for Enrolling Her Son in the Wrong School District

You’ve heard all about the college cheating scandal in the news – a bunch of super rich people and celebrities paid to get their average kids into Ivy-caliber schools – but for most of the country, there was little surprise that the education system (higher or otherwise) is rigged to favor the wealthy.

This case, in which a homeless woman was arrested and forced to spend time in jail simply for putting her son in a public school (which, in theory, are for everyone), really drives that point home for people still unsure how wealth inequality in America works.

In 2011, Tanya McDowell was a homeless mother in Bridgeport, Connecticut, when she was charged with first-degree larceny for enrolling her son Andrew in a Norwalk, Connecticut, kindergarten class.

McDowell says that though she and her son slept in a Bridgeport apartment at night, during the day they lived in her van or visited shelters for food.

She took a plea deal and received five years in prison (she served them concurrently with a sentence stemming from charges of selling drugs to support herself and her son), but only regrets part of what she did.

“Who would have thought that wanting a good education for my son would put me in this predicament? I have no regrets seeking a better education for him. I do regret my participation in this drug case.”

McDowell isn’t alone, either, according to New York City public defender Rebecca J. Kavanagh.

“In Ohio, Kelley Williams-Bolar was charged for lying about her residency to get her child into a better school and ordered to pay restitution of $30,000. When she did’t pay it she was sent to jail for 15 days.”

Since all public schools aren’t created equal, the practice of using friends and family’s addresses to enroll children in a “better” school district isn’t all that uncommon. It’s hard to blame poor communities and communities of color for wanting access to what should be the same for everyone – especially once you learn that white school districts get about $23 billion more in state and local funding than their nonwhite counterparts.

So while people like McDowell spend five years in jail for wanting their children to have what is available to other children, wealthy folks like Felicity Huffman get off with a slap on the wrist.

Kavanagh says this type of injustice is fairly common.

“This is really just an extension of what people do to get admitted to university already – donating money to buy buildings and fund endowments. The line between legal and illegal, donation and bribe, is blurred.”

She’s also quick to remind us that, regardless of Huffman’s (and others) sentence in this latest “scandal,” McDowell and those like her have suffered an injustice.

“While there is a part of us that may feel some sense of vindication at the idea of these parents serving five years in prison because Tanya McDowell served five years in prison when she was so much more deserving, that’s not justice. Justice is for Tanya McDowell to have never been charged, convicted, or sent to prison and to have the same educational opportunity for her son as these parents have for their children.”

As for McDowell, she hopes that things will be different for others – including her own son – in the future.

“I’m not only doing it for Andrew. I’m doing it for any other parent, any other child out there that has the potential to succeed and excel at a certain level and is just being deprived, period. My son exceeded all of my expectations.”

You Can Now Stay at Downton Abbey Through Airbnb for One Night Only

Don’t miss out on this opportunity!

I have a feeling this place will be booked up for a while…and quick. Highclere Castle, the main filming location for the Downton Abbey TV series and recent feature film, is now available for guests through Airbnb.

This has to be a dream come true for fans of the show. I know how excited I’d be if a room opened up in the Psycho house, so I can feel their excitement.

This actually sounds like a hell of a deal. You get dinner and drinks with Highclere’s Earl and Countess of Carnarvon, and you get waited on by a butler (a personal dream of mine). You also get a tour of the grounds and a stay in a private bedroom.

The gist? It’s for one night only and only for two people.. Guests will be able to stay at Highclere on November 26 only, at least for now. Reservations go on sale on October 1 at 12:00 pm BST (British Summer Time), so, if you’re an American, be sure to set an alarm early that day to book your spot.

The pricing starts at $159, which is actually WAY less than I thought it would be.

Here’s how the Airbnb page describes the visit:

“Lord and Lady Carnarvon will welcome guests into their home on arrival, and after settling them into their bedroom, will ask the guests to join them for cocktails before dinner. Throughout the stay, Lord and Lady Carnarvon will immerse the guests in the rich history and heritage of Highclere Castle with a private tour of the Castle, the Highclere Estate.”

If this is a big hit (which I’m sure it will be), maybe more dates like this will open up and you’ll have other opportunities to live in style…at least for one night.

What do you think? Are you going to try to get in on this action?

A Memorial in Turkey Commemorates the Women Killed by Their Husbands Last Year

Violence against women is an epidemic worldwide, but in some countries, it’s more extreme than others. In Turkey, for example, 42% of women over the age of 15 have suffered from physical or sexual violence.

Last year in Turkey, 440 women were murdered by their own husbands. An artist decided to come up with a powerful memorial to pay tribute to the murdered women and to bring awareness to the problem in his country.

Vahit Tuna said he had seen a lot of posts about the Turkish problem on social media, but he also realized that the stories came and went with a disturbing quickness. Tuna was determined to keep the issue in the public eye somehow.

Tuna chose to use 440 pairs of high heels in his memorial as a sign of female empowerment and independence that he sadly wishes was more of a reality in Turkey. In some parts of Turkey, it’s a tradition to put a person’s shoes outside after they pass away, so the memorial has even more cultural significance in the country.

The memorial is set up in central Istanbul so it will be seen by many people in the busy city. Tuna said, “We wanted everyone passing by the road to see [the work]. This is why we did not want to host the exhibition in a closed area.”

The 440 pairs of shoes are set to remain on exhibit for six months. Hopefully, as many people as possible will see the memorial and it will spark some painful and necessary conversations in Turkey.

Facebook Rolled out Education Features to Combat Anti-Vax Propaganda

It’s amazing that in 2019, a lot of parents out there buy into the anti-vaccination rhetoric and expose their kids (and others’) to potential harm.

That’s why it’s encouraging that Facebook has taken steps to fight harmful misinformation and “fake news” that appeals to these anti-vaxxers. On Facebook, informational windows will pop up when a person searches for anything related to vaccines, taps related hashtags on Instagram (which Facebook owns), or visits vaccine-related pages and groups.

Furthermore, in the U.S., users can use pop-up windows to connect to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to read about accurate, credible information about vaccines. If you live outside the U.S., you can connect to the World Health Organization through the pop-up windows.

A spokesperson for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that the organization is fully onboard with the move by Facebook:

“We know that parents often turn to social media to access health information and connect with other parents, and it can be difficult to determine what is accurate and who the credible sources of information are. [Combating] vaccine myths and misinformation is a shared responsibility and we applaud these efforts.”

A new feature is rolling out on Facebook and Instagram to combat the spread of anti-vaccine misinformation.Facebook,…

Posted by Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services on Friday, September 6, 2019

Health experts have said that anti-vaccination information online has played a large role in fewer people getting vaccinated against diseases and that has led to outbreaks in measles and other illnesses—in fact, the US is close to having its status as a measles-free country. So this is very timely and very important.

Nice work, Facebook. Let’s see more of this in regard to the spread of misinformation, because we all know how harmful that can be to Americans and others around the world.

Starbucks Is Offering an “It Frappuccino” That Looks Spooky and Delicious

Here’s another drink you must try this fall. It: Chapter Two recently hit theaters, and Starbucks has decided to offer a drink inspired by Pennywise, the murderous, terrifying clown from the film.

The frappuccino drink features a “strawberry blood” puree. I know I’m in!

The drink is a limited-edition item, and also it isn’t technically on the Starbucks menu, but if you ask your local barista for the Pennywise frappuccino, they’ll most likely know what you’re talking about. The drink has a vanilla bean frappuccino base with the strawberry puree (aka “blood”)  mixed in. You can also add a vanilla bean scone if you want to get crazy.

A lot of Starbucks locations are not advertising the spooky concoction, but some places are letting the world know that they’re offering the drink.

The drink seems to be a big hit because photos of it are all over social media.

One barista even got really creative with the cup and decided to draw Pennywise over the Starbucks logo.

I got to make a couple #itfrappuccino today at my #starbucks!!! Pictured first is my last attempt with a much better depiction of #Pennywise than my first attempt (pictured last). I loooove drawing him so I had to add him for the full effect!!! **PLEASE DO NOT ORDER THIS AS THE IT FRAPPUCCINO, your barista will likely NOT know what that is. Order a Vanilla bean frappuccino with strawberry purée on top! Oh, and PLEASE TIP YOUR #BARISTAS!!!!! @itmovieofficial @andy_muschietti @barbaramus Thank you for such an amazing movie experience these past few years!!! I’m so happy I can incorporate Pennywise into my everyday life 🤡🎈🖤🖤🖤 ETA//: If you see this featured anywhere please comment or DM me, I would love to see it!!! I also set up a ko-fi in my profile. If you enjoyed this and would like to see more cup art, art in general, or fun drinks, please consider supporting me there!

A post shared by Allison/Laurel {THEY/THEM} (@tinker_hell) on

The Pennywise frappuccino has actually been around since 2017 when the first It film hit the big screens, but a lot of folks still don’t know it exists.

For the It fans out there, Bill Skarsgård (who plays Pennywise) said there might be a third It film:

“Andy and I have discussed ideas for what a third movie would look like. I don’t think it’s quite what people expect. It’s something different. The first two stories are the book, and the second film is the end of that story. So we would do something quite literally off book. There are a few ideas floating around. I feel like I’ve done what I can with the incarnation of Pennywise as we know of him, so I think it would be a cool idea to change up a few things. So, without going into too much detail, there is a story that we’re kind of excited about, but it’s way too early to say. But we’ll see, we’ll see.”

I can’t wait to try this bloody—I mean strawberry-flavored drink and see a third installment of the series!

You Can Get Paid $770 a Month to Move to a Beautiful Region in Italy

Packing up your entire life and moving to a small village in southern Italy might sound kind of intimidating. But what if you were getting paid $770 a month to do so?

Molise, Italy, just started a campaign to pay newcomers $770 per month for three years, under one condition: You must establish a business in one of its underpopulated villages. The initiative is designed to boost Italy’s decreasing population numbers.

“If we had offered funding, it would have been yet another charity gesture,” Donato Toma, the president of Molise, told The Guardian. “We wanted to do more; we wanted people to invest here. They can open any sort of activity: a bread shop, a stationery shop, a restaurant, anything. It’s a way to breathe life into our towns while also increasing the population.”

Towns must have fewer than 2000 residents to be eligible. Those towns will also receive about $11,000 to build infrastructure and promote cultural activities so that newcomers have a reason to stick around.

“It’s not just a matter of increasing the population. People also need infrastructure and a reason to stay, otherwise we’ll end up back where we started in a few years,” Donato explained.

There are already some great reasons to move to Molise. The mountainous area has gorgeous, idyllic olive groves and cliffside views.

The area has suffered from a massive population decline, however, as young people leave the region to pursue job opportunities elsewhere. Italy’s population as a whole is also on the decline — the number of Italian citizens fell by 677,000 between 2014 and 2018.

And that is non buono.

This German Train Only Emits Water

With the climate change debate heating up around the world, it’s no surprise that some countries are looking for more and better ways to cut carbon emissions from the transportation sector.

The train, dubbed the Coradia iLint, was developed over the course of just two years and runs on hydrogen fuel cellls combined with a lithium-ion battery to run its engine.

View this post on Instagram

Germany launched world's first Hydrogen powered train today . Two bright blue Coradia iLint trains, built by French TGV-maker Alstom, on Monday began running a 62 mile (100km) route between the towns and cities of Cuxhaven, Bremerhaven, Bremervoerde and Buxtehude in northern Germany – a stretch normally plied by diesel trains . Hydrogen trains are equipped with fuel cells that produce electricity through a combination of hydrogen and oxygen, a process that leaves steam and water as the only emissions. Excess energy is stored in ion lithium batteries on board the train. . The Coradia iLint trains can run for about 600 miles (1,000km) on a single tank of hydrogen, similar to the range of diesel trains. #quizx #sustainabletransportation . #hydrogen #hydrogenpowered #locomotive #automobile #train #travel #industry #technology #sustainability #cleanenergy #lithiumbattery #germany🇩🇪 #france #coradiailint #energy #electricity #alstom

A post shared by QuizX (@quizx.in) on

Right now, Germany alone employs 4,000 diesel trains, but the iLint is expected to change that – and to drastically reduce the country’s carbon emissions in the process.

The trains have hydrogen fuel tanks on the roof and huge lithium ion batteries as part of their engines; they can travel 500 miles per day at speeds of up to 87 miles per hour. They give off only steam as a byproduct, and the only sound you’ll hear on board or as they whoosh past is the wheels and the air resistance.

#zeroemissions #train that runs on just #steam and condensed #water has successfully completed its first test run in #Germany. The Coradia #iLint is the world’s only #fuelcell #passengertrain, according to its French makers Alstom, who design #environmentallyfriendly rail solutions. Testing was carried out on the company’s own track in Salzgitter, Lower Saxony, with passenger test runs set to begin at the start of 2018. “This test run is a significant milestone in environmental protection and technical innovation,” said Didier Pfleger, vice president of Alstom in Germany and Austria. “With the Coradia iLint and its fuel cell technology, Alstom is the first railway manufacturer to offer a #zeroemission alternative for mass transit trains. “Today our new traction system, so far successfully proved on the test ring, is used on a train for the first time – a major step towards cleaner mobility in Europe.” The Coradia iLint, which is silent and can reach speeds of up to 140 km/h, is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, which produces electrical power for the traction. It is set to run on the Buxtehude-Bremervörde-Bremerhaven-Cuxhaven line in Lower Saxony. The Coradia iLint is the first low floor passenger train worldwide powered by a #hydrogenfuelcell, which produces electrical power for the traction. This zero-emission train is silent and only emits steam and condensed water. #CoradiaiLint is special for its combination of different innovative elements: a clean energy conversion, #flexibleenergy storage in batteries, and a smart management of the traction power and available energy. Based on Alstom’s flagship Coradia Lint diesel train, Coradia iLint is particularly suited for operation on non-electrified networks. It enables sustainable train operation while maintaining high train performance. “This test run is a significant milestone in environmental protection and technical innovation. With the Coradia iLint and its fuel cell technology, Alstom is the first railway manufacturer to offer a zero-emission alternative for mass transit trains. Today our new traction system, so far successfully proved on the test ring, is used on a train for the first time 🛂🆕⬇

A post shared by 🍄Adam&Autumn Joseph 🌱 (@disclosureguru) on

Alstom (the company that builds the iLint), issued the following statement:

“Alstom is proud to launch a breakthrough innovation in the field of clean transportation. It shows our ability to work in close collaboration with our customers and develop a train in only two years.”

Hydrogen power works when hydrogen is burned with oxygen to produce huge amounts of energy. NASA has used liquid hydrogen and oxygen to propel rockets since the 1970s, but cost (and probably political lobbying) has kept it from being widely used in the consumer market until very recently.

There’s also the fact that in order to get hydrogen, you have to use electricity to split water into its constituent elements – and if you’re using electricity from a coal plant, hydrogen doesn’t wind up being that clean of a fuel. But if you’re using wind power, it can be totally emissions free!

Now, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Norway are all interested in buying some iLint trains of their own, and I can only assume more countries will follow.

Maybe there is some hope for the future after all.

Check out These Hats for Cats Made out of Their Shed Fur

If you’re a kitty owner, you know that you spend a lot of time cleaning up after them as they shed. You’ll find mounds of fur in the corners, under the beds—basically everywhere and anywhere.

Japanese photographer Ryo Yamazaki and his wife Hiromi have come up with an inventive way to use all that fur shed from their three cats, Nyaa, Mar, and Mugi: they take the fur and make  little hats for their kitties to wear around the house.

I love it! And I think you will, too…
