People Who’ve Had Bosses Like Michael Scott Share What It Was Like

I’ve never had a boss that was like The Office‘s Michael Scott, but I’ve definitely seen some characteristics in a few of them that made me cringe just a little bit.

And maybe if I could put all my past bosses together and pick out the most ridiculous traits of each one I’d be able to create one INCREDIBLY ANNOYING head honcho.

But these kinds of bosses really do exist and they’re out there in charge of employees all over the place!

AskReddit users went on the record with their funny boss stories.

1. Hahahaha. Wow.

“I had a boss once who spent all morning locked in his office.

He asked me to come in after lunch where he showed me a handmade graph. He then proceeded to explain that this was a chart of all the s*x he had ever had in his life.

“See, here it is blank until I joined the army. Then I went to a hooker here. Then they sent me to Vietnam where hookers only charged $2 per time. That’s where you see the big jump. I was on two tours but then got shot in the face. I came back home and you see how it just drops to almost nothing. ”

I was astounded.”

2. Oh, boy…

“My boss is certainly Michael Scott-esque.

When I first started I was essentially Pam as well since I was both receptionist and his assistant to some extent. My favorite story was back when we were prepping for a conference.

Some context, he’s terrible with the English language in general and will mangle phrases and descriptions to no end (how the turn tables…). So on a group call he kept talking about wanting a “golden hamster ball” to do giveaways with.

Was raving about how great it would be spinning around while people walked by, all the while everyone on the call was just sitting in confused silence. However by that point, I had become so good at decoding his nonsense that I knew he was referring to a gold raffle cage and sent him image privately asking if it’s what he was thinking.

To this day he still talks about the fact I can read his mind and must be psychic. And he still refers to it as a hamster ball.

All in all he’s a pretty nice guy and a solid boss. Hired me based on a gut feeling and has been decent to me ever since. I think I knew it would be a good fit when during the interview he tried to tell me about the four pillars of the company and forgot one.

Told me later it was Knowledge.”

3. Whatever you say.

“He wanted a pomegranate for lunch and they were out of season, but that didn’t stop him from sending me on a quest to every grocery store in town in search of a pomegranate.

Multiple produce guys laughed at me, but that was the easiest $13/hr I’ve ever made.”

4. Hmmmm…

“I had a redhead boss who made us all sit down and watch a training video about how we shouldn’t refer to him as a “ginger” because it is bullying.

No one had ever called him that.”

5. Peculiar.

“Had a boss who was very peculiar. For instance, he’d open a random closet, look at the stuff inside, then go on a tirade, “look at all this! Who bought all this crap?!?!” – “Uh, you did”.

“Oh. Well somebody needs to throw it away!”

Constant stuff like this.”

6. Leave me alone.

“I had a boss that used to watch me through a gap in the glass partition between our desks. She wanted to see if I was paying attention during meetings.

One day, I put a large folder to cover the gap and she freaked. I still laugh when I think about it.”

7. Sounds about right.

“I once worked for a family company (not my family) where my boss often had loud fights with her husband, mother, and sister (an addict with a penchant for stealing) in the halls. I have a million wonderful stories about that workplace but one that stuck out to me is this:

Once for someone’s birthday, she decided it would be fun to buy an anatomically correct, male blowup doll. She took this doll into the office, blew him up, and dressed him in a construction vest (the company was a contractor).

When I walked by, my boss was trying to manipulate the position of the blowup d*ck, and asked me if I wanted to be the “fluffer”.”

8. Just like Michael Scott.

“I had a boss sneak up behind a middle-aged female employee and pick her up, then immediately drop her down saying “I didn’t think you weighed that much!” He could not stop laughing.

He was the principal of the school.

This occurred during passing period in a crowded middle school hallway.”

9. The nerve…

“My boss insisted his daughters be flower girls in my wedding.

I declined.

At the reception, he told me I was spending too much time talking to one person, and I need to work the room more.”

10. A good use of time.

“He held a meeting with our whole team less one person to discuss said person being gay.

We all knew for well over a year, and never made a deal of it.

So yes, they are out there and that is why the show is so funny to me. I can relate…”

11. Conspiracy theories.

“I literally had a boss who would stop us in the middle of our work and hold company-wide meetings talking about 9/11 truther conspiracies and chemtrails.

Mind you we were furniture-making company.

He would get so caught up in his conspiracy theories that he forgot to order wood to make furniture one month.”

12. Welcome to America!

“My first boss in America, I was 21. He was Asian-American. I had never seen the office but noted the absurdity.

He would get free potato chips from a guy in a company truck and would stuff his cheeks in the middle of telling me what to do. He always offered some.

Fired a coworker for screaming some racist stuff at me by just..yanking her out the door.

Called another coworker a cub or a baby lion because she was tiny with wild unruly hair. Would do a small mini roar whenever she was about to report for her shift or when I mentioned her name.

Ran around the place with a wig on his head imitating me.

Brought his daughter to work and give her piggy back rides in the office. Would ask me to take videos.

Would talk to black people in a “black” way. He would say wassup shorty to the ladies and what’s poppin. Called the guys Tyrone and would say shieeeeeet in his most convincing “black” voice. It was actually pretty good.

Would ask me to teach him random Arabic words so he could yell them sporadically in the middle of the day. He always got the accent right.

Had an open door policy and would do shots in his office.

Started a small chicken farm in the back of the building and would give out whole chickens to the staff. Had me and a coworker try to slaughter one one time. I couldn’t and nicked it just a little bit and shrieked, spraying all three of us with blood.

Received a visit from the city people to tell him he couldn’t keep chickens in back. He was rounding the main floor with a small basket of freshly laid eggs just as they were asking for him.

Did the chicken farm again the next summer, this time with a small garden growing squash, cucumber, corn etc to disguise the chicken coop. Happily gave out vegetables along with chicken.

Would be extremely proud of taking home a tray of his own eggs to his children. Ate two fresh eggs every morning.

Bought a wok to work to deep fry sausages in. Sometimes made lunch in the back. The entire floor would smell like food and he would round us all (3 of us) to his office to eat.

Would regularly fall asleep under his desk. The snoring was so loud you could hear it in the front. Once a client asked what that noise was and I said it was the plumbing.

Woke up after his naps looking puffy but acting as if nothing happened. Would immediately go next door for a Cherry coke.

Would constantly eat hard candy to stay awake during the day.

Ate too many edibles at a party I hosted once and passed out.

Told me to hire someone but when he saw the girl did a comical thing with his face, eyebrows raised and eyes big ( think Ken Jeong ) because she was having trouble fitting into her chair. She was a bigger girl.

Took away chairs the next day because they “encouraged us not to concentrate on the client.” The girl was a no call no show the following week.

Had a love hate relationship with a groundhog not long into his farming venture. He never caught the guy.

Once threw a cricket at me from the very opposite end of the office floor. He and another coworker kept such straight faces as I finally convinced myself the cricket flung itself at me. I watched the cameras at the end of the day only to see them do it. I’m still traumatized.

Has an office to this day full of the weirdest collection of things. A few feather from favorite chickens of his that he had since consumed all named and dated, a rabbit paw someone gave him, a goat’s hoof, a framed quote I told him told to me by a very high homeless person.. I don’t remember the rest. It’s just an odd place to go into.

Had a hard time growing a beard and would ask me what I thought of the progress of his “soup taster.”

Nicest boss I’ve ever had. Well meaning if a little racially insensitive all while being fascinated by other people’s cultures. He would buy different cuisines for us to try each week. Gave bonuses because he knew the job didn’t pay much so that was always a nice surprise. He paid my former coworker when she had to stay home all through her husband’s Covid.

Also, he loves llamas, alpacas, baby goats and when I showed him how to use Reddit he would almost always sends me an alpaca photo. I still get a photo now and then.

Also 3 years after leaving he still sends me photos of his illegal farm and recently asked me to post his cucumbers on Reddit.

Also I forgot to add that he fell into poison ivy bush once and didn’t know right away. He ran around screaming until we sat him in his office semi undressed and put medicine on his wounds. He was so miserable for days, it was hard to watch.

He dove head first into the wall when asleep once and needed to go to the doctor and get 3 stitches on his busted lip. He came to work that morning with a huge lip and kept having to explain himself all day.

We kept joking his wife was beating him up. He still insisted on snacking as usual. At one point he sipped ketchup with a straw.”

A Psycho Boss Turned Against a Productive Employee and It Didn’t Turn Out Well

You just can’t win with some employers.

We’ve all had bosses who we thought were happy with us, but out of nowhere, showed us they weren’t and that we were expendable after all.

This Redditor tells the tale of an employer who did just this. She accepted a high-ranking position with a company, and her main priorities were cleaning up the last person’s mess. She excelled at what she did.

She worked hard, and her boss seemed like a friendly, supportive person with excellent management skills.

However, he did have a temper, which she was aware of, but, as he only seemed to express it to others, their relationship remained fine. By the time her year-end review came around, she felt she deserved more money as she brought money into the company.

One day, she made a small mistake. It was a simple error, but his reaction to it was so overblown that she quit on the spot. He decided to fire her at the same moment.

The employee lives in a country that is bound by different labor laws than the U.S. In the end, her boss had to follow them. Meanwhile, the employee has had job offers left and right—if the company doesn’t act on hiring a new person as she is the only one in her department, it just won’t exist.

Some readers wished her well at her new job.

Others also shared their stories of terrible bosses.

The lesson? It pays to keep your temper in check!

A Company Wanted to Keep Worker’s Invention After Firing Him, So He Got Sweet Revenge

Some companies really don’t appreciate their staffers…even though they like what they have to offer.

Take, for example, the story of this Redditor. He designed a program to help a company he worked for to run its manufacturing more effectively. The company didn’t pay him for it but allowed him to tweak it on the factory floor and use it in real-life scenarios.

You would think that, if it worked well the person who invented it would be promoted, or the company would buy the invention outright.

Well, neither thing happened—he was let go of instead.

The worker was willing to sell the company the program and help them to configure the source code to meet their needs and said as much in his exit interview, but the owners had other ideas.

The company ended up paying for that decision dearly and asked him to come back to fix the program.

As he walked through the factory, he noticed something.

After about a month, the company was desperate to make a deal, but he had already moved on to a better job where his system is being utilized once again by people who appreciate it and him.

This is another lesson in karma—how you treat someone who’s working for you can make all the difference in the world when that relationship is over.

Readers shared their own experiences.

And contracts can be a very pesky thing for employees…

But employees can be a pesky thing too… because once they’re gone…

And this got people thinking…

Others appreciated the karmic retribution.

But note to self… create paper trails…

We don’t think it would have hurt this company to acknowledge what this person brought to the table, and the owners would have spent less energy doing the right thing!

Have you ever been treated terribly in a job, and if so, what was the outcome?

People Share Their Thoughts About a Four-Day Work Week

I know what I think about this possibility…I love it!

Now, I don’t have a 9-5 job anymore like I did in the past, but if I did, I’d be all about working ten hours a day for four days a week instead of the standard five.

Three-day weekend EVERY WEEK? Booyah!

Here’s what folks on AskReddit had to say about the prospect of a four-day work week.

1. Extra time.

“Working a 5 day work week just makes life seem so much more pointless.

By the time I get the other things I need to do (grocery shopping, appointments, etc.) done, its Sunday night.

A 4 day work week might give me time to play the piano I bought to combat depression.”

2. They love it.

“My company switched to 4 10 hour days. We are diesel technicians and work 7-5:30. Half of us work Monday through Thursday and the other half work Tuesday through Friday.

We have did this for over two years and we all love it. It is so nice to have a three day weekend every week. Another thing about it that is nice is if you doctors appointment or something I can make it on a Monday and don’t have to miss any work.

Plus I forgot to mention having a two month this helps out a ton. More time for me to be with my wife and daughter. And if there is a lot to do I can just come in on Monday and boom 10 hours of overtime.”

3. Much better.

“Life would be that much better.

I would have somewhere around 50 extra days a year to do all the yardwork and home projects that I don’t want to spend all weekend doing.”

4. Not as great as you think…

“It’s great, don’t get me wrong, but if you have to work the full 40, it’s not as great as you might think. An extra 2 hours a day doesn’t sound like much, but it takes a while getting used to.

Especially when you are drained, and you still have a few hours left. On top of that, if you have a family and you got off at 5, now you’re getting off at 7. So if you have small children, that gives you roughly an hour with them a day before they go to bed, which has been a deal breaker for some coworkers in the past.

If you instead go in earlier, you now can’t be the one to take the kids to school. You miss out on after school sporting events. On top of that, you’re just generally more drained from going 120% for four days in a row.

I still think it’s worth it. But not by much.”

5. Gladly take it.

“I would gladly work 4 ten hour days to have an extra day off.

2 day weekends are too short. They’re gone just as soon as you start to feel comfortable.”

6. A big fan.

“I work 4 10s a week instead of the usual 8 5s and I f*cking love it.

2 extra hours each shift is easily worth the 3 day weekend.

Feel like I actually get a break from work each week.”

7. A good idea.

“Think it makes sense.

All the evidence suggests it works, and the welfare benefits would be enormous.”

8. Game changer.

“My BF works 4 10s and it’s a total game changer.

It’s adjusted his schedule so he wakes up at earlier hours on his days off, which gives him more day in his day, on top of already having an extra one.

I’m self-employed and I try to have all my work done by Friday’s, so we usually get 3 day weekends together, which also makes taking short trips easier without missing any work.

It also opens up a weekday for him to do certain things that have more limited hours on weekends like appointments and whatnot.”

9. Might be a good idea.

“Given that we now have more people in the workforce and supposedly more “productivity” because of automation, we ought to be dropping down to 32 hour weeks to compensate for the changes in our household structures.”

10. Not much difference.

“I think it’s less about 4 day work weeks, but more about work life balance.

For people that’s already working more than 10hrs day or no-pay overtimes or working during holidays, working 4 days week means very little.”

11. Energy saver.

“In terms of climate change it’d be about 20% less CO2 emissions from commuters which is nice.

Not just commuting, but running a workplace. Industrial jobs are the most obvious, but even an office building full of computers, lights, climate control, etc uses a lot of energy.”

12. Keep the hours the same.

“As long as it is 4 – 8 hour days with no change in pay.

I can get the same amount of work done in 32 hours as I get done in 40.”

13. All good things.

“I would do some or all of the following:

Cook more

Play more competitive video games

Join a band

Play dodgeball

Go to the doctor/dentist once in a while

Travel out of state more often.”

14. Wouldn’t work for everyone.

“It wouldn’t work for me.

I work at an animal hospital, open 7 days a week, and there’s not enough of us to go around. And the company would never hire enough people to cover for a four day work week.”

How about you?

What do you think about a 4-day work week?

A Grocery Store Worker Got Ghosted By His Boss but Got Sweet Revenge

Usually, “ghosting“—when someone ends a relationship by ceasing all communication—occurs between friends and romantic partners, but it rarely happens between an employee and employer.

One Redditor, however, says it happened to him when he worked at a food shop.

To begin with, the place wasn’t that great for employees. It had a high turnover and, while this guy had been there a long time and pretty much knew how to do everything in the store, he knew it wasn’t the best job. But it paid the bills.

He was responsible employee, and when he went home for college break, he let the manager know his schedule. When he made plans to come back, he learned he was being ghosted.

The guy thought about ways he could exact his revenge. He had a few things in mind, but he didn’t want to get into trouble himself.

As they say, “revenge is a dish best served cold,” so he waited. He also took care of himself in the process and found another job. When he was settled, he squared things up with his former employer.

He never forgot the ghosting from his old boss, and while he doesn’t know the outcome of his actions, he did know his employer’s personality well enough to know that things wouldn’t end well. Of course, none of this would have happened if his former boss had done the right thing by facing him and telling him he was no longer employed.

Some folks on Reddit have encountered this before.

Even some people who REALLY know what they’re talking about.

And this person should really check the state laws. Because money.

Either way, some people would totally bounce to another employer for not very much.

Have you ever been ghosted by an employer? How did it make you feel? Did you try and get revenge?

People Share Stories of Huge Mistakes They Fixed Before Anyone Noticed

Have you been in this situation before?

Maybe it happened at work, or maybe it happened out in public, but you BLOW IT and FUCK UP in a huge way and you go into panic mode.

Now you need to fix your FUCK UP before anyone notices.

It’s a race against the clock but somehow you pull it off.

Whew! That was a close call!

AskReddit users shared their stories that are just like this.

1. Whoopsy daisy.

“Fucked up numerous times working on live applications. The best one was accidentally deleting the user table.

I was trying to delete a subset of users and managed to hit the key to run the statement before I’d written the “where” clause. If you don’t have a “where” clause to tell the database which records you want to delete, it just deletes all of them.

Luckily, the user table was only ever read by the application on log-in, so no one was going to notice unless they happened to log-in in the 2 mins or so it took me to load the records back in from a back-up.”

2. Working with acid.

“Working at a laboratory that used acid solutions to dissolve geological samples for various tests, my technical manager left a component of a machine in a plastic beaker filled halfway with concentrated hydrofluoric acid, unlabeled, in a fume hood that other people used regularly, “to see what it would do”.

I dumped it in a neutralizer and this asshole had the balls to yell at me for ruining his “test”. I told him it would etch and dissolve the part because it was glass, and he didn’t require a test because that’s already a known property.

Had someone spilled it on even a gloved hand, the hydrofluoric acid would pass through protection and enter the bloodstream without sensation, where it would leach calcium out of the bones, wreaking havoc on the nervous system causing a horrible, agonizing death.”

3. In the trash.

“I once had a roommate who didn’t speak English too well. She was moving away, and she was leaving in a hurry, and before she left she asked me to “take care of” a big bag of what was apparently clothes.

I assumed those were trash she didn’t want to take with her, and she just didn’t have time to throw them away, so once she left, I took that bag to the trash canister outside. A few hours later, that interaction just came back to my mind and seemed strange to me. I went back to the trash canister, the bag was still there, and brought it back inside.

The next day, she came back to get it and thanked me for “taking care of it”. She was a nice, poor girl from a rural region that was already struggling in the city, and I don’t want to think about what would have happened if I had to tell her that I threw her clothes into the trash.”

4. A wonderful song.

“Worked at a record / video rental store. After work on a weeknight, we close at 10pm, clean the store, count the register, lock the safe and go home.

When we clean the store we would often play a CD someone may have returned or which we wouldn’t normally play. Tonight it was 2 Live Crew’s ‘Banned In The USA’ CD with their hit single, ‘Pop That Pussy’. We put this on and crank it and start falling over laughing.

The bass is insane. We have 8 speakers set up around the perimeter of the store, all on shelves hanging near the ceiling. We hear this loud “THUNK” and cannot pinpoint what it was. We notice a speaker is “missing”… then find the corpse. It had jumped off it’s shelf and split into several chunks in the aisle.

Our night manager acted fast. “YOU!” she said, pointing to the 18 year old cashier. “Here’s $10. Go next door to Walgreens and get wood glue!” He’s gone. We start seeing if we can piece it back together. He returns. We glue it up and gently set that bitch back up on it’s shelf and left the speaker wire oh-so-gently unhooked.

The store closed about 6 years later and the manager never found out! We won! Yay Miami bass! Yay Pop That Pussy!”

5. Life and death.

“I was mixing IVs at the hospital.

Someone had put the wrong bag in the wrong bin. I didn’t notice.

I proceeded to make a batch of epidurals out of the wrong medicine. No one caught it. It somehow made it to the OB floor.

I came back into the IV room and saw the empty bag hanging and my stomach dropped. I called OB to ensure none had been used and to make sure it wouldn’t. Brought them back and wrote myself up.

If I hadn’t caught it, it would of caused major issue’s including the possibility of killing the patients. There were 12 syringes if I remember correctly.

I learned a very valuable lesson that day.”

6. Chicken drama.

“This is great timing, I was just thinking about this a few hours ago.

I rented a room from a couple and one of the rules was that I could not enter their yard. In their yard they had all sorts of animals a lovely quaky duck, a few cats and chickens. The chickens were in a big coop cause the cats hunting instincts were still to prevalent.

One weekend they asked me to feed the chickens while they went on a trip. On the last day of feeding all the chickens got out (5), and I noticed just in time to rip one of the chickens from the cats mouth.

After another hilarious 30 minute chase I’d put all the chickens back in the coop, minutes before they came home. I don’t think they noticed.”

7. That was awesome!

“Years ago, I lived in DC. One morning, riding in on the Metro I was changing trains from the Red line to the Blue. I heard the door chime and realized I wasn’t going to make this train. As I stopped, a guy bumped into me and ran on around and jumped on the train as the door chime sounded again. As he passed, I heard a thump and saw his cell phone hit the ground.

In one motion, I knelt down, grabbed the phone, stood up and under-armed the phone 20 feet and hit hit smack in the middle of his chest. He caught the phone, and looked up right at me in shock- then the door closed.

I said to myself, “Well, damn. No one saw that so I can never brag about it.” Then I heard a voice behind me say “Holy shit! That was awesome!” Guy who sat in the office right next to me was coming up behind me, heading into work at the same time. So since Tony saw it, I get to brag about it!”

8. That’s not good.

“Working on a presentation and managed to misspell the CEO’s name.

We’d been working on it for weeks, the name had been there probably since day 3 or 4. No one spotted it cause who would be dumb enough to get it wrong? I finally caught it about a week before it went to the presentation.

Definitely one of my sections, so glad I got it before it could do damage.”

9. A lucky break.

“Worked in an IT company. Had to switch of the routines for data backups because of I even don’t know anymore. Forgot to switch them on again. After around 2 years I noticed it more by coincidence. Felt very warm and sweaty instantly.

If data loss had happened, that would have been the end of the company. And the end of my career of course.”

10. Almost a bad accident.

“Caught a coworker pulling safety pins out of a support stand for a rather large and heavy jet engine component. I had two guys under the component and she was about to pull the last pin when I stopped her.

She was working with knowledge from a different style engine, and would have been correct on that model. In our model, she would have dropped a ton of metal on two guys.”

11. That would’ve been very embarrassing.

“I am a University professor.

I was watching porn one morning and closed my laptop without closing the browser. I then went to class, plugged the computer into the teaching station, and opened the screen. I was saved by the very brief delay between the image on my screen being displayed on the teaching station and it being displayed on the projector.

I managed to rip the HDMI cable out just before I projected to 100+ students.”

12. Catering.

“I work in catering, on multiple occasions have noticed food that has managed to be packaged on site, hasnt reached its sell by date (most foods we label with a sell by date of 3 days after packaging) and yet has mold on it. I’m sure I dont have to explain the consequences of that, physical or legal.

Also one time i was on my break and the food on sale was curry and somehow the one batch they happened to serve first managed to be ice cold because some how they managed to forget to heat that one up.

Luckily I was the first person to take some so I picked it up before the customer otherwise there would have been issues.”

13. Don’t play with fire.

“I was lighting matches and throwing them around a yard beside the one that I grew up in and bf it was so sunny out I couldn’t see that I started a grass fire and it had gotten big. ( the grass was also dead) I managed to find an old oil drum, tipped it over and rolled it all along the perimeter of the growing bush fire.

If I hadn’t had that barrel I would have burned down several graineries and possibly vehicles. If it had gotten into the tree line, my yard would have gone up. Only you know about this. None of my family.”

14. Dodged a bullet.

“Was going on a three night backpacking trip with friends, it was my job to round up three breakfasts.

At REI I picked up what I thought were six packages of freeze dried eggs hanging from a peg. Turns out only the first was eggs, the ones behind it were Neapolitan ice cream. The packages were identical, only a small label indicated the contents.

Fortunately for me the first day and night of the trip we were harassed so badly by biting flies and mosquitoes everyone wanted to abandon the trip as nobody brought bug spray.

I only discovered my mistake days later. Bullet dodged.”

Whew! Those were some close calls!
