Remember the Story About the Waitress Who Sued Hooters for Giving Her a Toy Yoda Instead of a Toyota?

In our strange world of social media and online news, stories that went “viral” a long time ago reappear out of the blue for some reason. Can we explain it? No, but we roll with it, that’s for sure! And this tale is pretty funny, too.

Let’s turn back the clock to 2001…

A woman named Jodee Berry was working as a waitress at Hooters in Florida (of course) all those years ago when her restaurant held a contest among its workers: whoever got the best beer sales would win a new Toyota…err…make that a “Toy Yoda.” Ouch.

Hooters

Berry worked hard and knocked her beer sales out of the park. When the big day came for her to get her prize, a brand new car or so she thought, she was instead presented with a toy version of Yoda from Star Wars in a box. Berry was PISSED, as I’m sure a lot of us would be.

A new Toy Yoda indeed ?

Posted by David Marshall on Wednesday, July 17, 2019

She was so pissed, in fact, that she not only quit her job at Hooters but she ended up suing the restaurant. The folks at the restaurant claimed the whole thing was just a big April Fools’ joke. A year later, Berry and the company that owns Hooters settled outside of court. Berry’s attorney said that the settlement was enough so that Berry could “pick out whatever type of Toyota she wants.”

I think I would be pretty pissed off too, to tell you the truth. What would you do in this situation? Poor Ms. Berry…

Amazon Employees Are Suspiciously Tweeting About Their Amazing Work Conditions

In years past, Amazon has been in the news for having unfit working conditions for many of their employees, especially employees working in their call and fulfillment centers (FC).

According to NewsWeek, “An undercover investigation in the United Kingdom revealed that warehouse employees resort to urinating in bottles and trash cans around the warehouse so that they won’t miss their strict time targets.”

Insane.

For obvious reason, Amazon has been on a mission to squash these so-called rumors, so they turned to their “FC Ambassadors” for help. These employees are on a team that posts on Twitter and social media about how much they enjoy working with Amazon.

While the retail juggernaut insists these people are real and speaking their true minds, Twitter followers smelled something fishy. Many were curious about the strangely stilted language being used. This FC Ambassador mission started over a year ago, and since then there has been some serious backlash.

One Twitter user wrote:

Here are some Amazon FC Ambassadors doing their thing…or not…who knows?

Are these people even real?

An Amazon spokesperson said,

“FC ambassadors are employees who work in our FCs and share facts based on their personal experience. It’s important that we do a good job educating people about the actual environment inside our fulfillment centers, and the FC ambassador program is a big part of that along with the FC tours we provide.

Thousands of guests across the world have come to see for themselves what it’s like to work inside one of our FCs. If you haven’t visited, we recommend it.”

But Twitter folks aren’t having it.

You get the point. As a way to combat this further, Amazon has been offering FC tours for anyone who would like to check it out. You can follow #AmazonFCTour for more on that. In the meantime, we can all sit back and watch this unfold.

Cities Are Using This High Pitched ‘Mosquito’ Sound to Get Rid of Teenagers After Curfew

This next viral sensation will make you go Hmmm? Or maybe Ouch!

Kodie Helmer came across the next phenomenon racking up over 95,000 shares on her post:

I need your help! ? Okay so I nabbed me a younger man, I said it….I am slightly OLDER than Chris #cougar ?❤ BUT I am…

Posted by Kodie Helmer on Sunday, July 21, 2019

“I heard on the radio that some businesses and even towns are using a sound wave as a deterrent for teens after curfew, INTERESTING right?! So I looked into it and found a series of sounds that become harder to hear as you *ahem* age. This one in particular cannot be heard by most people over the age of 40.

I CANNOT FLIPPING HEAR THIS!!! But, Chris Helmer can ? I called all our kids in and they were covering their ears!!! So, I got to know below, help me feel better (or worse) Tell me, are you OVER or UNDER 40 and CAN YOU HEAR THIS SOUND?!?!?”

I couldn’t help but check this out. If cities and towns can deter teens with it, it’s gotta be something! Here’s the sound.

Did you hear anything? I sure didn’t! I’m almost forty so my hearing must be going… Drat!

I decided to test this on my husband. He’s forty-three, and I thought if I can’t make out this noise he won’t either. I played it and he shrieked in his recliner, cupping his ears and yelling, “Turn that off! Don’t ever do that again! What the hell is that?”

I asked what it sounded like and he responded, “Like the Devil’s dog whistle.”

(I did play it again. I’m mischievous like that.)

Anyway, it was strange! How could he cringe and shout and I got nothing?

I did some digging on Helmer’s comment about these sounds shooing away teens after dark and came up with something called the Mosquito. It’s a sonic device used throughout Philadelphia and some other municipalities – but it has also been banned in various cities around the world.

What do you think?

A Mom’s Response to Her Daughter’s Interracial Relationship Went Viral in a Big Way

This is Heather Boyer of Houston, Mississippi.

Her daughter recently updated her profile picture, and it featured her and her new boyfriend, who happens to be African American.

Soon enough, Heather received a text message from a “friend” who asked if she knew she was “dating a black boy.”

Needless to say, this fired Heather up, and so she wrote about her feelings in a Facebook post.

It reads…

Today my daughter changed her profile picture. After maybe 5 minutes I get a text ..” I didn’t know she was dating a black boy, did you?”

It took me all day to think up a response, which I didn’t send personally but thought I would share for anyone else that “may not know”

Yes in fact I did know, but the color of his skin doesn’t define who he is. What does define who is he is how he treats my daughter.

I see my daughter dating a boy that comes to my house and shows me nothing but respect (a big deal in my book). It’s always Yes Ma’am, No Ma’am, we talk about football and baseball, he tells me bye when he leaves, and has not once shown me a lack of manners or respect.

I see my daughter dating a boy who treats her good. He takes her on dates, to ballgames, out to eat..not to a club or partying on the weekends.

I see my daughter dating a boy who takes her to church with him. Every Sunday. He plays in the band, she sits with his family. How many young men these days make church a priority? None of the others have.

He doesn’t hit her, cuss her, lie to her, or make her cry. Would I rather her date a white boy that did, to keep from her dating another race? Absolutely not.

So that’s my response to the question I was asked. And I know people have their own opinion, but at the end of the day, the fact that my daughter has someone that loves her and treats her like a queen makes me happy. That’s something I’ve never had in my life and I’m glad she does.

The post is now up to 1.3M likes and 160K+ comments, many of which are filled with support and thanks that she put herself out there in such a personal way. She said what we all needed to hear, so thank you.

Awesome job Heather!

If Influencers Ask for Free Food, This Ice Cream Truck Owner Charges Them Double

Business owners have given away free food for many years.

Now, influencers have popped up all over, especially on Instagram, looking to promote products and services. The catch? You know it: in exchange for their promotions, they want free products or services – or cash! Larger influencers with millions of followers can make a lot of money for exposure posts. For example, Kendall Jenner raked in $250,000 for one post promoting the disastrous Fyre Festival.

But are influencers losing their charm? Joe Nicchi, an LA ice cream truck owner, recently took a public stand against them.

He’s constantly being hit up by influencers wanting his delicious soft serve in exchange for a post on their Instagram stories. And when they offer him exposure for his food…

That’s right. Influencers pay double! His cones run about $4 each, so if an influencer asks for a free cone, they pay $8. So what ticked him off? According to VICE:

“Last Thursday, I got an event request to do a party on a weekend for 300 people in exchange for the word they love to use, which is ‘exposure.’ I can’t do that; I can’t work for free.”

300 people!? Unreal. This begs the question: Are influencers taking this “marketing strategy” too far?

View this post on Instagram

The “thank you card” is a nice touch…

A post shared by CVT Soft Serve (@cvtsoftserve) on

Nicci started his company back in 2014 as a way to make side income while working as an actor. You’ll find him on the streets of LA in a 1960s Mister Softee truck offering a simplistic menu ― chocolate, vanilla, or a twist cone. With the constant influx of influencers asking for free food, he had to put a stop to it all. He’s a small business owner and can’t afford to give away his “bread and butter.”

“The first 30 seconds of talking, they say ‘Hey, I don’t know if you follow me or not,’ so they tell me their screen name and say ‘If you want to hook me up with a cone, I’ll post it to my story. I’m like are you out of your mind? This is a $4 ice cream.”

What these Instagrammers seem not to understand (or care about) is the cost involved with swapping exposure for a product. They are asking Nicci, who is looking to sell to costumers, to “pay” for exposure (to who? He doesn’t know…) by giving out free ice cream. There’s just NO guarantee he’ll see any benefit.

So what if someone has 20K followers – are any of them in LA? What are the chances that they will buy his ice cream and how would he know?

“We work a lot of these [food truck] events on the weekends, and I’m not going to sound like a douchebag, but we have really long lines. It’s evident that we’re a popular business, but I’ve had many young Millennials who say things like ‘I’m surprised that you only have 5,000 followers.’ What does it matter? I have a line down the street. If Instagram went away tomorrow, I would still exist.”

Not all influencers take advantage, and the influencer bubble will burst soon, I’m sure. But in the meantime, Nicci can get back to what he been trying to do all along: Sell ice cream.

Woman Threatens Breastfeeding Moms on Facebook is Immediately Roasted by EVERYONE

Oh, Carly, Carly, Carly.

Why’d you have to go and do something so stupid?

Did she post a threat of physical violence against any woman she saw breastfeeding in public?

“I’m not sorry – the next female that tries to whip her boob out to breastfeed in front of my kids will get a black eye, move that baby [because] I’ll punch it too #zerocare #why #inpublicletsjustshowkidsboobs #notmine.”

Yep, Carly did that.

And it turns out that women who breastfeed (or women in general) don’t like to be threatened online or anywhere else for feeding their children. Crazy, right?!

Yeah, this went viral very, very quickly.

Because moms have to stick up for themselves.

Carly’s response?

She was defiant, and followed up on her Facebook post with this comment which, honestly, doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

What Carly doesn’t seem to realize is that women aren’t just pulling their boobs out just to pull their boobs out. We’re in the late 2010s. Things have changed Carly. They’ve changed!!!

This was hinted at earlier in the article, but people could see her profile and found out where she worked…

And yeah, you know what’s coming next…

Here’s the thing folks, if you want to post something like this on Facebook, you should probably select a very, very small group of people to share it with. Rant all you want, but rant to close friends. Don’t make things like this public, or else you are bound to suffer the consequences.

Or here’s a crazy thought… don’t put something this toxic online in the first place. Right it down on a piece of paper and throw it the garbage where it belongs.

Here’s Why All of Twitter is Tossing Their Vans in the Air

One of the fun things about the internet is that it allows a lot of people to come together and revel in their shared insanity. You can put up a crazy theory about literally anything and you’ll probably find scores of other strangers who want to play along.

Well, that’s exactly what happened with all this Vans business. It all started when @lanacutherlip posted this little gem:

Of course, everyone else needed to get it on the action:

And a new meme was born.

Naturally, parents just didn’t understand.

But neither did anyone else.

Some people even took the challenge to new heights…

While others thought they had it figured out…

And of course, everyone else tried to debunk the theory (yes! science!)

It just didn’t work every time

But this is Twitter after all, so we had to up the ante somehow…

But the Crocs theory seemed to hold up…

Oh, Twitter… sometimes I worry about you. But you do keep me entertained…

The Latest Viral Meme Trend? Moths

Figuring out what’s going to go viral is a seemingly impossible task. The ways in which an idea/theme/meme somehow manages to captivate the internet is a mystery to most us. Take, for instance, the latest trend of moth memes. Why in the world did it get so popular? There’s simply no telling.

It all started with this Reddit post:

Seems innocent enough, right? Probably something people would casually scroll by and not think twice about. But then someone responded.

And for some strange reason, people were inspired by this, and now the moth/lamp memes are EVERYWHERE. Here is a shining example.

You might say that people “saw the light” (c’mon, good one, right?).

And they just keep coming.
