This Person Got Into an Argument With a Mother Whose Child Went Missing. Were They Wrong?

If you ever give someone parenting advice, you know there’s gonna be some conflict.

And I get it! Because no one wants to be told that they’re doing a bad job being a mom or a dad.

This person shared a story about some harsh words they had for a mother and now they want to know if they acted like an a**hole.

Check it out.

AITA for getting harsh with a mother whose child had gone missing?

“Got home from work last night, threw some food on and went to take my dog out.

Its somewhere between 7pm-8pm (not yet dark but will be in about an hour). While I’m standing out there I see this kid walking by barefoot, completely sobbing and calling out the name “Susan” over and over. He couldn’t have been more than 8 years old.

Instantly I’m worried and go over and ask him if he’s okay, if he’s lost or trying to find someone (I live in an apartment complex). This kid then breaks my heart. Between desperate sobs he tells me his two year old sister Susan is missing.

That he didn’t mean it, they were playing on the stairs and he had thought his mom was watching her when he went over to say hi to a friend that was walking by. Apparently she wasnt and his sister had wandered off.

I spring into action right away and tell this poor to let’s go find her. I ask if anyone has called the authorities or if he wants me to make a phone call for some help. The kid looks scared and says no, his mom is also looking. It was almost like he was afraid to get in trouble. So I spend the next hour with this kid looking high and low for his sister.

It starts getting dark so I tell the boy I should take him home and his mom needs to call the proper authorities if she hasn’t, but her 8 year old son should not be wandering around alone in the dark. We dont want people hunting for 2 missing kids.

So as were heading back to his apartment and he’s still sobbing and calling her name, this guy sitting out on his patio goes “Oh, if you’re still looking for that girl, they found almost an hour ago. She’s home safe.”

While there was relief, there was also fury in me. This mother had left her 8 year old son wandering around alone is desperation for the last hour. Almost the whole time I was with him, so I know there was no attempt to find him.

I get him to his apartment and knock and the mother answers the door. She goes “Oh there you are Joey. I was waiting for you to come back. Susan is fine, no need to worry. It was just a mistake. I know you wont make it again.” The boy is still sobbing.

Unable to help myself I look straight at the lady and say (in front of the boy). “Its a mistake you wont make again. This was your fault, not his. You didn’t even bother to come find him while he was out there trying to clean up your mess and your lucky you didn’t end up with two missing kids. I’m glad your daughter is home and safe, and now your son as well.”

Of course she’s start yelling at me, telling me I’m q horrible person to say that, and in front of her child and that I have no idea how scary and stressful it is to loose a child and that I have no idea what she went through after her son had told her Susan was missing. I just shrugged and said “It was a bad mistake, dont worry, I’m sure it wont happen again.” And walked off.

I feel like i might have been to harsh on a woman that obviously had a rough night and put her down in front of her child. I was just so angry at what she put that boy through.

AITA?”

And here’s what people had to say about it.

This reader said that this person was not an a**hole at all and that the mom in question acted inappropriately.

Another Reddit user said that young kids should not have this kind of responsibility and this is actually dangerous.

What’s Something Your Brain Just Can’t Comprehend? Here’s What People Said.

Maybe I’m not very smart, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve realized that there are tons of things that just make no sense to me.

Things about how the world works, how people behave, etc.

Does what I’m saying sound familiar at all…?

What’s something you can’t wrap your brain around?

Folks on AskReddit answered this question.

1. Don’t ask me…

“The fact that there even is space…

Where the f**k did all those materials come from?

How did life develop out of nothing?”

2. Pretty annoying.

“I can’t comprehend why any company would think I’m more likely to buy their product if they make their commercial 20db louder than all other commercials.

Instant boycott.”

3. Words and stuff.

“Language.

The fact that we all collectively decided separately and divertingly that certain sounds have meanings and that other sound mixed with those can change the meaning.

Adding onto what I said, sounds are just vibrations in the air that out brains interpret into the sensation of hearing. Really we’re vibrating the air at each-other and those air vibrations to your brain contain meaning.

When you think about it like this language is not too dissimilar to the internet in a way. Makes you realize how crazy and unique of a skill language really is, with-ought it we wouldn’t have a civilization.

Another interesting thing related to this is when people call your name. Even if your in a crowded area with hundreds of people talking around you and you think your tuning them out if you hear your name you immediately notice, Some part of your brain must be constantly listening.”

4. How does it work?

“How a simple calculator works.

I can do math. I’m actually very good at it.

How does a little plastic box do it though? Always boggled my mind.”

5. What year is it, again?

“Dates.

I am considered a historian by my family due to my knowledge on most world history, but god dang dates.

I could be talking about WWII and say it happened the same date as WWI.”

6. Can’t fathom it.

“The size of the universe.

The fact that you can fit all the planets of the Solar System between the Earth and the Moon. Now think how far apart all the planets are in the Solar System. This is practically next door  compared to the distance between our Sun and the nearest star.

There are billions of stars in our Milky Way (with the majority having planets of their own). The sheer scale of the vast emptiness involved means that even when our galaxy merges with the Andromeda galaxy in 4.5 billion years’ time, there will be very, very few actual collisions between stars.

Then there is the void between galaxies, and that it takes billions of years for light, at its speed (massless, and the fastest speed possible), to travel between galaxies, speaks of the sheer emptiness and distance in that void.

I can’t quite fathom it.”

7. Deeeeeeeep thoughts.

“Light isn’t affected by time. So…other things could just exist outside of time?

Like, if you were a photon that traveled at light speed for a million years and then hit an alien, you’d experience it as instantly being a million light years away.”

8. Good question.

“Why people vote for politicians who have a party affiliation without ever reading anything about them or their policies or political history and only picked them because of their party.”

9. Kind of a scary thought.

“There is no more water on Earth, Water is not created, it just gets moved around on this floating ball in space we call Earth.

All the water in the world that has been drunk, processed and excreted as p**s from every human and animal ever to have existed on Earth has eventually ended up in the sea, gets recycled and the process starts again.

A glass of water could theoretically contain particles that originated as p**s from Dinosaurs and Roman soldiers or Egyptian gods and slaves.”

10. Can’t believe it.

“The fact that supposedly people can picture things in their head. When they close their eyes they can think about something and visualise it. Makes no sense to me at all.

If I try to visualise something I can state facts about the thing I’m thinking about (the ball is blue and fluffy) but I don’t see a blue fluffy ball. Apparently people could “see” that. It truly boggles my mind and I can’t believe it.”

11. Mind-boggling.

“How Pi doesn’t repeat.

It blows my mind that computers can calculate millions, billions, trillions of digits, but it hasn’t found a pattern yet.”

12. It’s pretty wild!

“How the sun can warm us and provide energy for all life on Earth from 93 million miles away.

And how millions of stars are orders of magnitude more powerful than that.”

13. Bizarre.

“People with opinions that seem to not be based on any self thoughts or rationalization and rather on repeating what others say in some sort of group behavior.

Like one internet phenomenon I’ve seen lately is how people look at other people, not as who they are but as what their opinions about who they are is, so they will twist any action to fit that world view.

Seems bizarre to me”

Now it’s your turn!

In the comments, tell us what you just can’t comprehend.

We’d love to hear from you!

Zoo Workers Share Behind-the-Scenes Stories About Their Jobs

I think working at a zoo would be exciting, satisfying, and challenging.

And one of the main reasons I don’t think I’d be able to do it (besides being terrible at science) is that when animals were sick or needed to be put down, I know I’d be a blubbering mess and wouldn’t be able to handle it.

But I still want to know what the job is like…

AskReddit users who work at zoos opened up about what goes on behind the scenes that the general public doesn’t know.

Let’s dive in!

1. A hard work-life balance.

“If you work with the animals there’s a good chance you’ll not be able to have any kind of social life, between the long hours/weekends and the stench.

I’ve been kicked out of stores after work because I apparently stunk way worse than I thought I did – even after scrubbing off!

And I’m around animals every day, but I still can’t stand when otter / sealion keepers are around me in “all-hands” meetings. The rotten fish + ferrety otter smell combo is a gagger.

Meanwhile, I work with apes, and they say that I smell like I haven’t showed in a decade (again…even after I shower).”

2. Kinda funny.

“Our lions will urinate on guests if they get too close, which is always funny to see.

Not so funny to smell…”

3. All over the place.

“I’m a small animal vet now but worked in a zoo before vet school.

Zoos are one of the biggest purchasers of Calvin Klein’s Obsession cologne. The cologne has animal musk in it and it drives the big cats wild.

We used to spray it on everything.”

4. Keep an eye out for those.

“I worked with large tortoises.

We had these 5-gallon buckets for cleaning the p**p out of enclosures and other buckets for feeding them fresh grass we cut. The first day on the job I took both buckets into the pen and started by dumping out the grass. Then I went around to collect p**p.

I heard this awful loud grunting and something breaking. One of the 300 lb males tried to bang the bucket in front of visitors and flattened it. He would even follow me around just in case I might leave more innocent buckets unattended.”

5. Unwritten rules.

“The zebras and Przewalski’s horses are ruthless and will tear apart any unfortunate wild kangaroo that dares break into an enclosure.

They love the thrill of the chase… and the subsequent k**l when they get bored.”

6. Get there early.

“Used to work at a zoo, cold weather makes the animals more active so go on a chilly day or first thing in the morning to see the best show from the animals.

Also, those free roaming peacocks are really stupid and sometimes go in the lions exhibit and get torn up.”

7. Escape drills.

“I used to volunteer weekly at a large zoo and at one point management started doing monthly dangerous animal escape drills.

Someone would run around in a lion onesie and we’d have to react as if one of the large animals had escaped. It was hilarious but one of the funniest things I was taught was that if an incident did occur you have to tell the nearby guests to get inside only once.

If after that they refuse to follow you indoors (the protocol was to hole up in the large activity centre buildings) , you’re to leave them there, go inside yourself and lock the doors. It makes sense because people can be very stupid and you don’t want to risk everyone’s lives because of one Karen, but it amused me no end that the protocol was to just let them get mauled.”

8. Mating.

“Aquariums have captive breeding programs for some of the dolphins and whales, but they are too difficult to transport for mating.

So they have to use artificial insemination. Which requires s**en samples from whales.

Which means that it’s someones job to give handj**s to dolphins and whales in order to collect the sp**m.

It’s part of the animal’s training, and the whales will roll over and present their ge**tals on command.”

9. People are annoying.

“The amount of dumba**es who complain to management about paying to go to the zoo, then not seeing any animals is unreal!

Like, what do you want us to do? Go in there with sticks and chase them out of their hidey-holes?!

Sorry buddy, not going to happen.”

10. Vicious.

“The most dangerous/feared animal in case of an escape is not, as you may think, lions, tigers or other large carnivores.

It’s the chimps.

Those things will rip your arm off and beat you to d**th with the bloody end as soon as look at you.”

11. Stay far away.

“If you have worked with them then you probably already know, but one swift kick from an ostrich can k**l you.

Like they will literally disembowel you. Every time I see a video of someone getting up close to one, I can’t help but cringe.

One of our head keepers had actually lost part of their ear to one.”

12. Somebody’s gotta do it.

“The amount of injuries you can just casually pick up from animals is crazy.

I’ve been kicked in the chest by a kangaroo, almost r**ed by an emu, attacked by a wombat and a bat, bitten by a monitor lizard and a carpet python, had a rhino charge at me, and been scratched by a macaque. My old boss has this bad a** scar from a snow leopard attack, and this guy I work with now has his entire left forearm mangled from an orangutan attack.

It also shocks you how….dumb people can be. There can be a huge sign that says “Hello! I’m an echidna, NOT a porcupine!” and people will still ask if that’s a baby porcupine.

You get used to the same jokes every day. Like when you’re cleaning up the outside enclosures (in view of the guests), someone will eventually say “Oh what a strange animal! I wonder what kind it is!” in regards to seeing a human. Or the amount of people who scream “HUMP DAY” when they see a camel….

I have no qualms about picking up animal s**t bare-handed. I know what my animals have been eating, I know what’s in their digestive systems, and to me that makes it more bearable. I can have long discussions about p**p consistency with my co workers, and in fact, that’s what a lot of general health talks are about. “Homer’s stool was a little looser than normal this morning – I wonder if something happened overnight to stress him out”

You get used to being stinky. I currently work 8+ hours with primates daily and I feel awful for the people who share a space with me when I go to the gym directly after work. Primate p**p smells very similarly to human p**p.

When I was at the zoo, I smelled exclusively of rhino p**s and I could not get the smell off of me.”

Okay, now we want to hear from you.

In the comments, tell us about the secrets from your job that most people don’t know about.

This Person Wants to Uninvite Someone to Their Wedding. Are They Wrong?

We got another family drama story for you!

Do you think you can handle it!

Well, we’re about to find out…

Check out this story from the “Am I The A**hole” page on Reddit that involves in-laws and a strange threat…

AITA for uninviting MIL’s fiancée to my wedding after he threatened to pour wine on me?

“For some background we aren’t very close to MIL or her fiancé. She feels we took FILs side in the divorce and she has always kept her distance.

The other day we were at my fiancé’s grandparents house. MILs sister made a joke that MIL should be one of those MILs and wear white. MIL just laughed. It doesn’t really seem like something she would do but I added that my bridesmaids would soak her in wine if she did.

MILs fiancé said that would be hilarious because he would destroy my wedding gown. I asked what he meant and he said he would empty a bottle on me if any of my stupid friends did anything to her. MIL tried to move the conversation along but I have anxiety about stuff like that and it was bothering me. I said he can’t come to the wedding because I can’t trust him.

MIL called me this morning and wanted to confirm if I was serious. I said I was (not the first incident, he has been rude in the past) MIL started crying and said she isn’t going to be around her ex husband without him. I said that was pretty vain but her choice.

Now MIL isn’t coming, which we don’t care too much but her whole side of the family is furious. Her dad might not come now which will bother my fiancé.”

Now let’s check out how Reddit users responded.

This person made it simple: everyone in this story sucks and they’re all to blame.

This reader agreed that everyone is pretty bad in this story and argued that the person who wrote the post is just as much to blame as everyone else.

Another individual said that everyone here is to blame…except for the mother-in-law.

Lastly, this person was adamant that the mother-in-law definitely did not do anything wrong but that everyone else involved is an a**hole. Boom!

This Person Asked if They’re Wrong for Embarrassing Their Parents Over a Tip Jar

Here’s a pretty unique story that I’ve never encountered before…

It involves family, parents, parties…and a tip jar.

Take a look at this story from Reddit’s “Am I The A**hole” page and keep reading to see how people responded.

AITA for “embarrassing” my parents by putting out a tip jar?

“Before the world went to s**t, my parents LOVED hosting big parties. They’d ask me to play piano during these parties, and I’d usually oblige. I’ve been playing piano since I was 5 and have competed at the state and national levels.

They recently resumed hosting parties now that a lot of their friends have been vaccinated. Usually, I come downstairs, play a few Liszt/Chopin pieces, and head back upstairs to my room because there’s no one my age at these parties. Before the most recent party, I got the idea of putting out a tip jar with a sign saying “pianoboy12345’s college fund” along with my cashapp, venmo, and paypal.

I did this because I’m going to college in the fall and want some extra spending money. My parents are pretty well off and most of their friends are also well off, so I ended up earning almost $1000 that night.

My mom came up to me after the party was over and said I embarrassed her and my dad because the sign suggested that they’re going to have trouble paying for my college.”

Hmmmm…now it’s time to take a look at how readers responded on Reddit.

This person said that they are a jerk for doing this and that putting out a tip jar is just plain tacky.

Another person said that while tacky, the writer is young and maybe they’re just fed up with being asked to play at parties by their parents.

Another individual said that this young person shouldn’t be working for free just because their parents ask and they should be getting paid for their work.

Finally, this person said that the writer is NOT wrong for their actions and that they should be making a little dough for their efforts.

Do you think these actions were rude or disrespectful?

Sound off in the comments and let us know.

Thanks in advance!

What’s a Ridiculous Lie Your Parents Told You? Here’s What People Had to Say.

Parents gotta do what they gotta do…

They’re in charge of making sure their kids survive and thrive, so sometimes they gotta lie to make things run a little bit smoother.

But then there are some parents who really go over the edge with the whole lying thing…

AskReddit users went on the record and talked about the most ridiculous lies their parents told them.

Take a look!

1. He did the right thing.

“My dad got fed up of watching Barney the dinosaur when I was a kid, and one day when I asked to watch it, he said:

“You can’t”

“Why?”

“Because Barney died”

I never did watch Barney again.”

2. Now I’m scared.

“When I was little, my mom told me if I didn’t finish my dinner my stomach would get very hungry and come up and eat my brain.

A few nights later I woke her up at midnight crying because my stomach growled and I needed a second dinner or it would eat my brain.”

3. Poor Alice.

“That my siblings and I had a sister named Alice.

Apparently she wouldn’t stop talking in the car so they dropped her off on the side of the road…never spoke on road trips ever again.”

4. Joke’s on you.

“When I was a kid my father told me about “the can”.

He said it contained a family secret of incredible value, and that when I turned 18 I could see it. On my 18th birthday I asked my father about the can, he said “what the f**k is the can?” and after I reminded him of it, he burst out laughing, saying that he was f**king with me.

For almost a decade I believed that I would be privy to some cosmic secret on my 18th birthday, turns out I’m just very impressionable.”

5. Sad.

“My dad d**d in a car accident a few years ago. And till this day my mom says that he is still on vacation.

I don’t know if it is a coping method for her but i haven’t said anything about it.”

6. Beware…

“That if I didn’t brush my teeth, tiny teeth goblins would sneak into my room at night and pull out my teeth while I slept.

I was genuinely afraid of the teeth goblins.”

7. In denial.

“I lived with my grandma until I was 16.

My mom is currently telling me that never happened and she never left me with grandma. I guess I imagined my entire childhood

‘Lived with’ doesn’t do it justice. Grandma raised me. I alternated weekends between my mom and dad but I’m sure her 4 days a month are made up too.”

8. They really like me!

“My birthday is the 11th of July.

The gas station 7/11 gives away free slushies on 7/11. At 7, 8, & 9 years old my parents just told me that the 7/11 wanted to celebrate my birthday by giving me free slushies and I did not question it.

I thought the gas station just really liked me.”

9. Weird.

“If I acted up my mom would say she was sending me to the hospital to be put down.

It really really f**ked me up.

She even drove a sobbing puking me to the hospital to be put down one day, she said she would give me a second chance and didn’t take me in.”

10. Hungry?

“When I was younger i learned that mushrooms were a fungus and refused to eat them.

My dad made me some soup with mushrooms in it and i threw a fit about eating it, so he inspected the bowl and told me they were whale toes.

Apparently i was old enough to know that mushrooms were a fungus but not old enough to know that whales didn’t have feet.”

11. It’s in there somewhere.

“When my dad wanted me to stop bothering him he would send me on aimless errands.

“Go to the shed and get me the chain stretcher”.

I’d be looking for hours.”

12. Lame.

“Parents always claimed we were a poor family growing up so didn’t have money for sport clubs/hobbies or expensive school trips.

Got older and realized it was due to the amount of money they would spend on weed.

They still don’t see it as an issue to this day.”

13. Better watch your step.

“They told me kids came from a government agency called the CAA (Child Assignment Agency) and that they could exchange me when ever they want if I ever misbehaved.

They told me they were eyeing a “well behaved little girl” but hadn’t decided yet.

They used it against me for years.”

Did your parents ever tell you any outrageous lies?

If so, please share them with us in the comments.

Thanks a lot!

People Tell Stories About the Weirdest Black Markets at Their Schools

Do you remember in your high school how there was always one student whose locker was full of contraband?

He (or she) had stuff to smoke, stuff to drink, and weird stuff to look at. And it was all for sale!

You know you did! Because every school has a kid like that!

Folks on AskReddit talked about the weirdest black markets they had at their schools. Let’s take a look.

1. The Godfather.

“I was friends with a kid in middle school that had a descrambler. Dude would buy up blank VHS tapes and record like 10 minutes of p**n off the Spice channel and sell for like 10 bucks a tape. Gave 2 dollars for tape returns for new content.

He was a Greek kid, and with a bunch of other Greek kids in the school, formed a Greek mafia with him as the Godfather. Being a big kid that played football, I was one of the Greek mafia’s ‘associates’, but alas, I could never become a ‘Made Man’.

He made so much money off selling VHS p**n tapes, when we hit 16, he was able to buy himself a pretty sweet Camaro. Once the internet came about in 1998 is when his business ran dry. By that time he was into other s**t.”

2. Nice!

“A girl set up a little business out of a box of stationary, writing forged letters from parents. She had all different paper, pens and pencils of every kind, and could write in convincingly accurate tone for the content of the notes depending on which kid they were for.

She used different styles of handwriting and different styles of punctuation and language too. She’d even fudge the spelling if she thought the kid’s parents weren’t great at it. She grew up to be incredibly educated. I look back and see that as her first moment of evil genius. It definitely suggested she would go on to brilliance one day and she did.”

3. Replicas.

“I organized the black market. My school banned Pokemon Cards, so I made a new game with paper cards.

I was drawing pretty well, so I folded an paper in 9, it made pieces approximately the size of a Pokémon Vard, and created a whole new game out of this. Sold boosters for 10 cents. Spend all my afternoons drawing cards for the school. Teachers eventually heard of it and couldn’t ban it because it was still officially still me distributing drawings. And then I started to do replicas of Pokémon Cards.

Like people had to show me the proof after school that they owned the card, I made a replica, and then the whole Pokemon Card trading continued with paper replicas. Then after school people made the real exchanges based on what replicas they exchanged during school.”

4. Zero tolerance.

“There was a pretty big market in my elementary school for Atomic Fireball Candies.

I remember being out for a couple days, but coming back with a big handful of the fireballs in my backpack… only to find the teachers had implemented a zero tolerance fireball policy.”

5. Scammer.

“Remember Columbia House? Where you could get 10 VHS movies for like $0.99? But then you had to buy like 5 more at regular price?

So I did the math and figured out what the actual price per videotape was after all commitments to the “club” were made, and it was like $5.

So I took orders from classmates, bought movies for them, and then sold it them at a slight markup. Basically, I was undercutting Suncoast.”

6. Smugglers.

“Probably the jocks who smuggled in food for the diabetic and hypoglycemic kids.

School has seriously strict policies and wouldn’t budge for medical problems. These kids were in some serious danger and administration would confiscate their food all the time.

Most of the kids playing on the sports teams were placed on pedestals and protected by the administrators. They could do just about anything they wanted and they’d get away with it because they were athletes.

So a lot of them would smuggle in extra food in their backpacks and pass it out to the kids who needed it.”

7. Not cool.

“Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos.

This one kid would buy every single bag out of the vending machines and sell them for like double the cost.”

8. Old school.

“Sharpened sticks

When we learnt about caveman we decided that it would have been a great idea to create our own prehistoric clan, so we smashed rocks and used them to sharpen tree branches.

Some of us where particularly keen on sharpening that started to use walls as grindstones, they were able to sharpen about 6 sticks in half an hour and started exchanging them for berries during recess.”

9. CRAVE.

“We used to mix koolaid packets with sugar in a ziploc and then you dip your finger in and eat it or just pour it in your mouth.

We called it Crave. It eventually got banned so kids would eat it in secret and sell it to other kids.

So basically we were just eating tons of sugar all day.”

10. You’re covered.

“I sold “protection” when kids wanted to ditch.

When the school announced openings in the attendance office, I had a half dozen of my friends rush over and sign up immediately. By the end of the day, we owned it.

I charged $10 – $20 to ignore each truancy. Each morning, if we had clients, I’d hand a list and half of the cash to whomever was working that day. Word got around fast, but we were never caught.”

11. A legend.

“The dude who sold our fake IDs was really committed to his work. He made state and college licenses.

Carried around two metal rings with samples of all the stuff he could make using Britney Spears shot from the Hit Me Baby One More Time album as the photo. He would also give you the ID in a white envelope. I had a rush order once and he had a standard rate for that – ended up picking it up from him at home in the other side of the city.

Dude was on point. I think he ended up being an interior decorator.”

12. Quite a story.

“Let me tell you the story of The Great Bead Wars.

7th Grade. A kid in my class went on vacation to New Orleans, and came back with a cr**py little plastic bead necklace for every kid in the class. It was cute. Until some kid was fiddling with his necklace, and broke it, spilling beads all over the floor, interrupting the lesson. Most of the beads got picked up and thrown out.

Most.

It wasn’t long after the lesson started up again, that some kid had taken an errant bead and chucked it across the room while the teacher’s back was turned, pelting his friend in the side of the head. The bead bounced off out of reach. But he needed to retaliate. Luckily, he had his own necklace, with several dozen beads of his own. He quietly broke the necklace, grabbed a fistful of beads, and hurled them back at his attacker, catching many a civilian in the crossfire.

Needless to say, the war escalated.

And war is cruel.

Every time the teacher’s back was turned, volleys of beads flew across the classroom. No one was safe. If you were too focused on the lesson and forgot to raise your binder as a shield while the teacher was writing on the chalkboard, it wouldn’t be long before you felt the sting of a bead striking your temple.

Alliances were made. Factions developed. The bead economy was formed. At lunch, valuable food items were bartered for bead supply. A full necklace? Intact? That would set you back at least a twinkie and can of soda.

Betrayal and espionage were rampant. Best friends became sworn enemies. Technology thrived: bead catapults were made from rulers. Slingshots were made from elastic bands, pencils, and binder clips. One student managed to engineer a stapler into a spring-charged, loadable bead shotgun.

A direct hit to exposed skin from 3 desks away from that bad boy would leave a mark. You didn’t cry out though – You clenched your teeth and fought back the tears; There are rules to war. We knew that it was a matter of time before the teacher caught on, and if she found out then it was all over.

Well, that day eventually came. We came in from recess, and written on the chalkboard was the following:

I’m not blind or deaf. I know about the bead wars. All beads and bead-launching devices have been confiscated from your desks. If I find any more beads being thrown, the whole class will be in detention for the rest of the month.

Some resisted. We knew she couldn’t have possibly got all the beads. Some still surfaced on the black market. But it wasn’t the same. We knew it was over. There is a time to know when to keep fighting to your dying breath, but there’s also a time to know when to surrender.

I’m a grown man now. I have a wife, and a job. I get out of bed every morning and go about my day, as if The Great Bead Wars never happened. People smile at me and shake my hand. They don’t know what I’ve been through. They couldn’t possibly imagine the burden I carry. The invisible scars that will never heal. The fact that most nights, when it’s silent, I still hear the “tic. tic. tic-tic-tic” of a bead bouncing on my 7th grade classroom tile.

But I persist. I have to. If not for me, then for those classmates so many years ago. Those whose names I’ve forgotten, but whose terrified faces are burned into my mind’s eye. I don’t know where they are now; if they’re alive or dead. I don’t know if I want to know. All I know is that I will share this unspoken bond with them for the rest of my days.”

Now it’s your turn!

In the comments, tell us about the weird black markets that you had in your school.

We’d love to hear from you!

What’s the Craziest Thing Your Ex Did After Your Divorce? Here’s What People Had to Say.

We’ve all had one. And some people have had quite a few…

I’m talking about crazy exes who go off the deep end after a breakup and make your life a living hell.

You just gotta ride it out and hope that things don’t spin off into Fatal Attraction territory, you know what I’m saying?

What’s the craziest thing an ex did after a divorce?

AskReddit users shared their stories.

1. Thief!

“My ex stole a car and did 18 months in state prison.

Based on what I was able to find online at the time, he approached a car dealership and showed interest in buying a vehicle. They allowed him to take it home for a 24 hour demo. He never returned it.

They reported it stolen after they attempted multiple times to contact him to return it. They then contacted the state police who put a BOLO out. They found him driving the vehicle on the other side of the state where he thought he wouldn’t be found.

I found out when I got an unexpected phone call from the sheriff’s office. I asked why they were calling me about this. They said my ex I told them I would vouch for him as a “character witness”.

I told the officer over the phone that my ex was a lying sack of s**t and shouldn’t be trusted. The officer laughed, thanked me for my time and hung up.”

2. A real jerk.

“Completely ignored our three children for the last ten years while living with a woman and her three children.

Did I mention, our oldest is HIS from a previous relationship, who I was awarded custody of, and he is her only living biological parent?!”

3. That’s weird.

“My favorite was his sister sent a Facebook message to all of his contacts the day of our separation (including my family).

Before we announced anything, her message stated everyone should immediately delete me and if I said anything about why we separated I was lying and not to listen.

Basically this created a lot of curious questions and a lot of laughs.”

4. Ouch.

“My ex-wife told me I could leave my stuff in our house while I found somewhere else to stay.

I assumed this was a good-will effort to keep things as amicable as possible between us. When I went to get my stuff she had burned all of it.

So that was rough.”

5. Dangerous.

“She removed the retaining clips for my windshield wipers, but put the wipers back on the arms.

First storm after I got my car back from her, driver side wiper flew off the car on Interstate 40.

Good times.”

6. Oh, boy…

“She called my company, talked her way up the chain to the president of the company (still don’t know how she managed that, but she’s smart) and told him I was suicidal and had threatened to “do something drastic” at work…

Later I learned that she thought this would be a roundabout way of getting my address which I didn’t share with her after I moved out because she’s bats**t crazy.”

7. Petty.

“When I told my ex-husband I wanted a divorce, the next day after I went to work he packed our entire house into a uHaul and put it in storage. Even with a court order he refused to give my stuff back. I left my marriage with the clothes on my back.

Years later he decided he was above the courts because he got away with that and took our son across country telling me he was moving with one day notice and told me I couldn’t do anything about it. Of course I promptly hired a lawyer and we went back to court and he lost joint custody but it took a year of fighting, chasing him down, and not seeing my son.

There are more stories but those are probably the worst.”

8. Horrible.

“Ki**ed or Euthanize our dog, then lied about that he d**d of natural causes.

Given the dog was old and blind, but she pleaded that she wanted a weekend with him, and then the next night sent me a fake text that he passed away during the night at like 3 am because he coughed and then just stopped breathing.

That s**t wasn’t true, I found out later after finding and calling the vet she brought him to, that she bad mouthed me about and that he was suffering and needed to be put to sleep because he was in agony and I was supposedly letting him suffer.

She had him out to sleep like the day she took him home, like 3 hours afterwards. Never got to say goodbye due to that b**ch.”

9. Jeez.

“Called me and pretended he had been hit by a car while we were talking.

He even tried to voice the crowd that had gathered around his “body.” God-awful acting, but pretty funny listening to him try to mimic a woman’s voice. Points for trying to be inclusive, I guess.

I think he was trying to get me to re-live my trauma of being on the phone with a friend who actually HAD been hit by a car while we were talking. Too bad he didn’t realize that hearing the real thing is worlds different than hearing a dumb**s try to act it out.”

10. Put it in writing.

“After he realized I was never going back, he told his mom that I had been stealing from the family the whole time we were together.

Then he literally put it in writing that I had a key to his parents’ home and would sneak in and take his dad’s guns and his grandmother’s jewelry, and that he had been powerless to stop me.

It was always his druggie sister. Always. Anyone with eyes could see it, but no one in the family wanted to believe it.”

11. That’s weird.

“My ex husband started dating his step mom who has been in his life since he was 11 years old.

His step mom and him are still together almost 5 years later. His step mom confessed her love of my ex to his dad a few years ago and they have since divorced. The dad is now dating a 21 year old.

I know all of this because I’m still close friends with my ex husbands sister.

It’s so messed up and I’m so grateful I left him when I did.”

12. Wow.

“Kidnapped the kids during their weekend visit and moved to a small town in the next state over. It took me 2 years to get them back.

She eventually burned all her bridges in the town she moved to and went home to her parents house. Since her parents were not pleased with her choices and were on my side during the whole deal they called me to let me know where she was. I went and got them.

This was over 20 years ago and they have both grown up just fine. I’ve since remarried and my 2nd wife has been a wonderful mother to them.

It took a lot of work to fix all the damage but it’s mostly ok. The biggest scars that lasted was that my son has a distrust of women with authority (that he has worked really hard to get over) and my daughter was afraid to start her own family because she worries she would turn out just like her mom.

She finally got over that and is expecting our first grand baby this fall.”

Did you ever have an ex go bananas on you?

And don’t mention any names, of course…

What is the Scariest True Story You Know? People Responded.

I’m a true crime fanatic and I genuinely enjoy reading and hearing about true stories that are disturbing and scary.

Does that make me a weirdo?

Perhaps, but at least now I know I’m not alone, judging by how many people out there are obviously into the same kind of stuff.

Folks on AskReddit shared the scariest true stories they know.

Prepare to get creeped out.

1. Creepy.

“I grew up in a funeral home. I helped out in the office.

When I was about 15, we got a call from a man whose wife and infant baby had been m**dered in cold blood.

There were very few clues. It made headlines. Cops set up surveillance at the viewing. It was heartbreaking, as the mother was holding the baby in her arms.

I was asked to take the flower cards and periodically get the husband and ask if he recognized the names. I then photocopied them and put them back. I did it because I was a “kid,” people knew me, and I was unobtrusive.

I talked to the husband quite a bit. He seemed devastated and shaken.

The cops told me they had an eyewitness to someone leaving the house the day of the m**der.

The witness was a three year old girl. She recognized the man leaving. It was the husbands best friend.

Turns out that the friend and the husband had made a pact to k**l each other’s families and run off with their secretaries. The little girl identified the friend, and I guess one of them cracked.

They both went to jail on multiple counts, all on the testimony of a three year old.

I still cannot believe to this day that that man stood right beside me, multiple times, and I had NO CLUE.”

2. Awful.

“James Bulger.

He was just 2 years old and with his mom running errands. She let go of his hand to pay the cashier, and he wandered away. Two ten year old boys spotted him, lured him toward them, took him by the hands and led him away. They took him to a remote location, pushing and kicking at him the whole time.

Some people questioned the two kids with the crying toddler, but they lied saying he was their brother and nobody intervened further. They took him to a secluded spot and t**tured him. I don’t want to recount the t**ture details, it’s just too gruesome. They left his body on some railroad tracks hoping that being run over by a train would make it look like an accident. He was found days later, his body severed in half by a train.

The boys were caught and became the youngest convicted m**derers in British history. Security footage from the day they took James shows them watching children, picking out a target. And they were just kids themselves. They were released at 18. One of them is back in jail for possessing child abuse photos on his computer.

The most terrifying thing about this for me is that my own son is only 2 now, and James’s m**derers were just children, too. It was premeditated and intentional and entirely random. Just a momentary lapse in attention and he became a target of two m**derous children. Children.

To think that children younger than my step son are capable of such a thing… ugh. Everything about this case is just horrifying.”

3. The more you know…

“My dad worked in a morgue in during college in the 60’s.

One time on the night shift he was training a recent hire who was wheeling a body down the hallway. The body was under a sheet but all of a sudden started to sit up. The guy immediately freaked out, ran out the doors and quit.

Apparently a d**d body can have muscle contractions in the abs causing it to start sitting up. The more you know I guess.”

4. Terrible.

“During college, I lived in an apartment with a community pool. There were a bunch of us having beers at the pool one night over summer term, and one of my friends ran to jump in the pool but changed his mind at the last second.

His feet slipped out from under him on the wet concrete and he went down. He broke his neck in the edge of the pool…never walked again and had extremely limited upper body function.

I watched someone’s life be ruined and it was terrifying. Listen to the lifeguard and walk.”

5. This is terrifying.

“I had a guy tell me a story a couple decades ago about how he was hiking in an area in South America and wandered away from other hikers in the area.

The ground was wet and without warning it gave away and he got sucked into a fast moving underground river- pitch black, completely submerged, and at the mercy of the current as it buffeted him against the sides of the tunnel. After some time the current subsided and he realized he was in a larger pocket, still pitch black and submerged.

He said that even as he struggled to hold his breath, he didn’t panic and realized that the water had to keep moving somewhere, so he moved around until he found another tunnel that sucked him in.

At one point he began to see light so he punched upwards, broke through the ground and pulled himself out, soaking wet, gasping for air, and a bit of a distance from the other dry hikers, who were somewhat bewildered when they saw him straggling up to them.”

6. Explosion.

“The New London school explosion.

A school in Texas in 1937 tried to tap into natural gas on their own and it ended up leaking and blowing up the school. It’s the reason they make natural gas scented in Texas and probably the US now. I’m amazed I never heard of this in school because it seems like something that should be taught.

I read some survivor stories and I had f**king nightmares. It was horrible. Three in particular stuck with me. One was a 7 or 8 year old girl, she saw her best friend and playmate with her entire body crushed by concrete with only her shoulders and head above it, and she still had a lollipop in her mouth like she didn’t know what happened.

Another was a guy I think a 16-17 year old, helping un-dig people and bring them out of the wreckage. He saw a dad holding his daughter crying his eyes out while the back of the girls head was broken open with her brain on the ground next to her.

The last was a 9ish year old girl who went to find her mom after it happened (there was a PTA meeting going on at the time so there was a lot of parents at the scene) her mom was freaking out trying to find her but didn’t even recognize her. She went upto her mom and called out to her but she just kept saying ‘you’re not my daughter.” She was so covered in blood and ash and tears that her own mother couldn’t recognize her.

It was a truly horrifying thing.”

7. Right next door.

“I lived next to a m**derer.

Faye Swetlik was 6 years old when she was kidnapped out of her front yard. It was all over the news. I had news crews, cops, even the FBI all over my townhouse complex. My fiancée and I met with the FBI 3 times. They searched our home and everything. I remember clear as day, my fiancée FaceTimed me as the cops were digging through the trash cans directly in front of my townhouse.

They pulled out her boot and a bloody knife. Then they found her body, dumped maybe 300 feet from my house. He had watched them find the m**der weapon. Dumbass put it in a trash bag along with his other mail. He went to his back porch and opened his own throat.

It’s crazy. I had conversations with the guy. I never knew he was a psycho. This all happened a year ago.”

8. Middle of the night.

“My great aunt woke up in the middle of the night, she heard her dog making these low growls.

She was single at the time and living alone in her ranch-style home. She walked out to her living room to check things out. She didn’t see or hear anything out of the ordinary, so she decided to make sure her door and front windows were locked. Door was locked, first window she checked was locked.

When she lifted the mini blind on the second window, it was wide open and a guy in a ski mask was standing there. She said he laughed this evil laugh and said “party time” then he started to climb in. She screamed that she had a g**, her dog started barking his head off. The would be r**ist decided to bolt. My aunt did get a g** after that and learned how to use it.

I can’t even think about what would’ve happened to her if she didn’t have her dog to warn her.”

9. The Girl in the Box.

“The kidnapping of Colleen Stan. She was hitchhiking in the 70s, and turned down rides because they didn’t seem safe.

A van with a young couple and a baby offered her a ride, and because it was a family, she accepted. They held her at gun point, put a giant box on her head that blocked out noise and sound, and later, kept her in box the size of a coffin underneath their bed. She was brutally beaten and r**ed daily for 7 years. They also brainwashed her to believe that they were part of a mafia called “The Company” that would k**l her family if she tried to escape.

Eventually, the wife helped her escape and received immunity for testifying against her husband at trial. The case is known as “The Girl in the Box.””

10. Chilling.

“Germanwings Flight 9525.

The copilot locked himself in the cockpit and set the airplane for a slow descent into the French Alps.

For 10 minutes, the crew desperately tried to get back into the cockpit, but in this post 9/11 world, the door was design to withstand assault did not fail.

This is was a daytime flight. Passengers knew what was happening. They could see the mountains getting closer out the windows. This wasn’t a quick, “what’s that… omg… out”… this was a long, drawn out realization of what was coming and the end was inevitable.

Chilling.”

11. The doctor.

“The story of Christopher Duntsch aka Doctor D**th who operated out of the Plano and Dallas area.

He maimed 33 people and ki**ed 2. He was an alleged neurosurgeon that didn’t actually receive a proper medical education to operate, but still did so despite not fully being trained. No hospital would report him or take his license away. They would just pass him off to another hospital to continue injuring or ki**ing people.

He was the first doctor to be formally indicated with m**der, and sentenced to life imprisonment.”

12. Wow.

“My brother was a police officer.

He had a call to check on the welfare of a mother who had not showed up for work. She had d**d on the sofa and her little toddler brought the little diaper pad and laid down next to her, and d**d of dehydration.

The little kid had opened the lower cabinets and drawers in the kitchen looking for food. He still cries about it. And he’s not the crying kind”

Okay, you’re up!

People Share the Scariest True Stories They Know

I’m a sucker for all crime-related material and the spookier, the better for me.

And I think it’s safe to say that the true crime genre as a whole is more popular than ever with the general public.

So I think a lot of folks are gonna be interested in these stories.

What’s the scariest true story you know?

Here’s what folks on AskReddit had to say…

1. Missing.

“This one kid back in the early 20th century named Bobby Dunbar.

He went missing, and after like a year of searching for him, his parents came across a man with a kid who looked a lot like Bobby. They believed it was their kid, and after a legal battle with the kid’s supposed mother, they brought the kid home. A whole parade happened due to the missing kid’s return. He lived and d**d believing he was, in fact, Bobby Dunbar.

Well, a few decades later, his granddaughter asked Bobby’s (nephew I think?) for a DNA sample so she could see if her and Bobby’s nephew were related. Turns out, they weren’t. Meaning the real Bobby Dunbar is still missing and, probably d**d alone without his parents.”

2. Horrible.

“Nirbhaya Case – 2012 – Delhi

A female student boarded an off-duty bus with a male friend. They were returning home after watching a film. The six men, who were already on board, including the driver, attacked the couple, taking turns to r**e the woman in the moving bus around the city, before brutally assaulting her with an iron rod.

Her friend was beaten and tied to watch the assault. They were then thrown out onto the roadside to d**. Some passers-by found them naked and bloodied and called the police. Two weeks later – after widespread protests that demanded India reckon with its treatment of women – the victim d**d in a hospital in Singapore, where she was taken for further treatment after her condition deteriorated in a Delhi hospital.

All six people were arrested for the attack. One of them was found d**d in jail in March 2013, having apparently taken his own life.

Another, who was 17 at the time of the attack, was released in 2015, after serving three years in a reform facility.

The remaining four were hanged in the capital’s high-security Tihar prison.”

3. Frightening.

“My mother’s friend left her abusive husband. My mother met her while working at a women’s shelter.

They were really close, and my mother fought so hard to get her somewhere safe. They did everything right. She helped her file divorce papers. And then one morning my mom can’t get her on the phone, but they’d had plans to meet for lunch. And she checks the newspaper. And she calls in sick to work. Which she never did. And she sat my down in tears and told me what happened.

Her friend was home, with her son, when her ex broke in. He ki**ed her and left the baby there, in his mother’s blood. And then he hung himself outside of Raley’s. Last I heard their almost two year old went to live with his uncle. I can’t imagine how terrifying it was for the baby to cry to himself, in his mother’s blood, for the almost two days until he was found.”

4. Whoa.

“Happened to my boss’s best friend when they were around 17 yo:

Best friend’s parents were out of town one weekend and she had the house to herself. Went about her business having dinner, watching tv then decided to go to bed. She was lying in her bed with her back to her closet when she heard the door open. She somehow pretended to be asleep – the man who was hiding in the closet walked around her bed to the side she was laying/facing, gently stroked her hair and face then left.

She immediately called her boyfriend to ask him to come over then called her parents and then the police. Long story short this man had been getting into their home via a doggy door (they didn’t have a dog and didn’t bother to secure it) and he’d been living in a tent in the foresty area behind their home for months to creep on her. They found a ton of surveillance footage of her sleeping and pieces of her clothes and stuff.

If I recall correctly this happened somewhere in Alabama, most likely mid-2000s.”

5. Bizarre.

“I read a story recently about Paulette Gerbera Ferah, a 4 year old child who went missing from her room in 2010.

Her parents immediately notified authorities, and started a social media campaign to find Paulette. Paulette’s room was searched multiple times and used by her parents to do media interviews.

Here’s the terrifying part: Paulette was found d**d 10 days later… IN HER BED! She had wedged herself between the mattress and the footboard and suffocated.”

6. OMG.

“The blue-ring octopus has a venom that causes paralysis, causing people to d** of cardiac arrest or because of hypoxia. There is no antidote; the ”cure” is CPR or lif-support for the hour-or-so it takes for the the venom to leave the body.

There was a man who was bitten by a blue-ring octopus. As the life-guard was preforming CPR, he was lying on his back on the beach, facing the sky, eyes frozen open. Unable to close his eyes or communicate with the others, he lied there as the sun slowly burnt out his retinas. He became permanently blind.”

7. Inspired by…

“The story that inspired “Candyman” is pretty creepy.

A woman in a Chicago apartment was m**dered by some drug dealer who lived next-door.

How did he get into her apartment? Through a hole behind her bathroom cabinet/mirror.”

8. Horror story.

“The Nutty Putty Cave Incident

A spelunker got stuck upside down in a narrow cave for 26 hours. Crews tried to pull him out with pulleys, but had to be careful not to break his legs, because that could be fatal with the circumstances he was in.

Rescuers even almost dislodged him, only for an anchor to fail at the last second, plunging him back into the crevice. He eventually d**d, and they sealed the cave shut with him inside.”

9. The expedition.

“The Franklin Expedition.

Somewhere in the neighborhood of 150 British sailors and military personnel on two ships embarked on a mission to find the Northwest Passage from the Atlantic across to the Pacific through arctic waters. The ships, named HMS Erebus and HMS Terror (two former warships reclassified as ice breakers thanks to their sturdier builds) departed British waters in the 1845 and were never seen again. In subsequent rescue attempts and investigations it was discovered that quite possibly everything that could’ve gone wrong on the expedition did so.

The weight of the ships with their reinforced hulls and decks designed to fire mortars and cannons off of worked against them as much of the waters crossed were shallow and filled with rocks and icebergs. The the time chosen to launch the expedition occurred at one of the coldest Arctic periods in recent history, meaning the polar ice and (particularly the pack ice) didn’t melt like usual as the ships became locked in the frozen water and essentially experienced an endless winter for over 4 years.

The food they stored which was supposed to last for years thanks to the revolutionary new process of canning was bought at the lowest bidder. Much of the food was improperly sealed and spoiled leading to food poisoning and even the ones that were properly sealed and kept intact were riddled with lead thanks to the soldering used to keep the food inside fresh.

In conjunction with the lead pipes in the ships the men would’ve been drinking out of for years meant the entire crews of both ships was slowly being infected with all manner of diseases (namely botulism, scurvy and heavy lead poisoning which also affects the mind leading to memory loss, heavy paranoia and general mental deterioration) combined with already present tuberculosis that ki**ed a small number of the crew before departing to the Arctic.

After about 2-3 years stuck in the ice, the captain in charge of the voyage John Franklin and many other crew members d**d in unknown circumstances and the remainder decided to abandon ships and try and hike out together to the nearest trading outpost and Back Fish river in Canada, hundreds of miles away, by loading up their rowboats with supplies and fixing them on sleds to be pulled. All remaining crew perished on that journey.

Their remains discovered by local Inuits/Netsilik tribes, who described desolate campsites of skeleton-like corpses with hazily built, half-open tents and even human body parts in cook pots, heavily implying that the men resorted to cannibalism in their last desperate hours.”

10. Deranged.

“The m**der of the Groene family.

A deranged pe**phile named Joseph Edward Duncan was already on the run from the cops for a past s**ual assault. He was incredibly charming and manipulative, and was truly pure evil. He camped outside a family’s rural home, unseen by them. He picked it out after driving past it and seeing children’s toys outside. He watched them from afar, got to know their routine with the intent of kidnapping the children, ten year old Dylan, eight year old Shasta.

Jed found the lock on the door was broken, entered the home in the middle of the night and tied up the mom, dad and teenage son. He put Shasta and Dylan in his car and ki**ed the rest of the family with a hammer.

He travelled around various campsites and cabins with Shasta and Dylan captive, s**ually abusing, t**turing and raping them. He eventually shot Dylan but Shasta talked him out of ki**ing her. Jed ended up telling her she “taught him how to love”

The scariest part is a cctv footage of Jed and Shasta at a gas station. Because you could easily believe they were just a normal dad and a grumpy daughter if you were an onlooker https://youtu.be/ZttD-myqdaw

Eventually, he took her to a diner where he was finally apprehended when a waitress noticed something was up and Shasta was saved after 7 weeks in his clutches. As he was dragged away, he called to her “promise me you’ll visit me in prison” and she said she would. I don’t know if she ever did.

Jed was put on death row and found to be guilty of three previous child m**ders. He d**d a few months ago from cancer.

But the worst part of it all is how horrible Shasta’s life has been afterwards. Drug addiction, in and out of jail, losing her children etc. Just the most horrifying story ever.”

11. The cult.

“In the 1980s there was a Mexican cult led by an American named Adolfo Constanzo.

They used to kidnap random people from tourist towns and nearby cities and perform human sacrifice on them in their rural Mexican desert compound, usually t**turing in elaborate rituals for hours or days before finally letting them d**. These rituals included vivisections, castrations, eyeball removal, tongue removal, teeth pulling, skin flaying, hanging, etc.

They used amphetamines and cocaine to force the victim to stay awake during the t**ture and not pass out from shock.

The cult believed the more pain and fear they could generate in the sacrifice victim the more powerful the body parts would be as ritual trinkets and also for food for the cult’s “nganga” which is a large ritual cauldron used to store bones, blood, meat, and other valuable items that the cult believed gave them power. They used to make staves out of wired together spinal columns and they would often eat the victim’s eyeballs during the rituals.

They are believed to have kidnapped and sacrificed over 26 people to their nganga in their three years that they were active from 1986 to 1989. The leader committed suicide when the police showed up at their compound. They arrested 14 cult members but most people believe there were at least a dozen more that escaped and are still out there.”

12. Scary.

“Personal story.

When I was 10, I regularly attended a choir club for kids. One day, I was picked up by my dad to drive me home. I was confused about it, as it was always my mum who did, but did not think much on it until half-way through the drive. My dad began to mumble about how sorry he was, and how I would never see him again.

More than a bit frightened and confused at that point, I kept asking what he meant, but he wouldn’t say. Until we were home, but he did not leave the car, and instead urged me to get out. Finally, he told me I would not see him again because he will be d**d very soon for what he did, and that the police would answer me.

After he practically kicked me out of the car I rushed home, but no one was there. But I found the door open, and a puddle of blood on the floor.

The police was nearby and explained what had happened:

My dad was obsessively jealous and had found a pack of old condoms in the cupboard, so he drew the conclusion that my mum must have cheated on him. Never mind the fact that we only recently moved into this apartment, and they could have been left by previous tenants, or the fact that he controlled my mum’s very step and never let her go anywhere alone. The police took me to the hospital, where my mum, luckily alive, was being treated.

My dad had smashed her skull in with a full wine bottle. The only reason she survived was because my little brother, 7 at the time, intervened. If it weren’t for him, my dad would have ki**ed my mum in a fit of jealousy.

When he said that I would not see him again, he meant that he had planned on ki**ing himself shortly after dropping me off. He did not succeed, and police managed to get him into a mental ward.

This, to this date, is the scariest thing that had ever happened to me, but I keep thinking of my brother all the time. To witness your own mum being beaten half-d**d by your dad. We both suffered extreme mental trauma from this event later down the line, but somehow turned into decent people. I never really told him how grateful I am he was there, but I think that I really, really should.”
