When I travel I get excited about two things: drinking and eating.

Sure, I’ll check out some museums. Yes, I’ll walk the streets for hours on end.

But the highlight is always the food and the drinks, baby!

And these responses gave me some ideas about some future trips.

1. Yum!

“East Africa.

An omelette made of fries, eggs and spices (chips mayai).

13. When in Colombia…

“Colombia: chocolate santafereño, or hot chocolate.

I know what you’re thinking. “What’s so distinctive about plain ol’ hot chocolate?” Or maybe, “[insert dumb Colombia drug joke here],” but let me tell you right now, there is nothing better on a chilly morning in the altiplano than a mug of hot chocolate to fill you with vim and vigor.

What makes our take on hot chocolate so different? Three things:

First, ours has a richer concentration of cacao. The rest of the world takes what is essentially sugar with powdered cocoa and mixes it with milk. Not so in Colombia. Our chocolate actually comes in bricks of pure cacao paste with a tiny bit of panela (unrefined cane sugar) and cinnamon. The result is a beverage that is less cloyingly sweet and more rich and flavorful, with a deep aroma that is at once sweet and nutty.

Second, preparation. This, too, is different in Colombia. Rather than grind our wonderful chocolate into dust, we make it by heating our delicious ingots of dark gold in an olleta, a tall pot that resembles a metallic pitcher, along with milk, cloves and a couple of sticks of cinnamon.

Once the chocolate softens, we take a molinillo, a type of grooved, wooden, mace-like whisk, and beat the mixture with a motion akin to that of prehistoric man making fire. The result is a light, foamy beverage that goes down smooth.

Finally, there’s the cheese. Yes, you read that right, we put cheese in our chocolate! I can see your brow furrowing even now, but rest assured, this is a soft, fresh, unsalted cheese (also known as farmer’s cheese or white cheese) that has a chewy texture, like unsalted mozzarella.

Drop a few pieces in your chocolate while you snack on a pandebono (cornflour sourdough bread) or a pandeyuca (pillowy, savoury manioc bread) and fish then out once they’re soft.

There are many wonderful dishes that make up Colombia’s cuisine. But as someone who doesn’t live there anymore, there’s only one dish I really truly miss, and that’s chocolate santafereño.”

1. Polish food is great.

“Poland:

Pierogi (Slavic dumplings). Try cheese and potato pierogi, fried and topped with sour cream/bacon/fried onion. Also try sweet pierogi’s- with blueberries, strawberries etc. You can also eat them as is or top them with sour cream and sugar or a little bit of whipped cream.

Bigos (Hunter’s stew with cabbage, sausage, mushrooms)

Placki po zbojnicku/wegiersku (potato pancakes with goulash- meat stew). They are often topped with sour cream

Golabki: stuffed cabbage with rice and ground beef. It’s served mostly with tomato sauce or mushroom sauce

Barszcz czerwony: beet soup. It is freaking delish.

Zapiekanka: toasted open faced sandwich that’s made on baguette bread. It’s usually made with mushrooms, cheese and topped with ketchup and green onions but there are MANY different varieties. It’s a very popular street food

Cwikla/Buraki – grated beet salad, often with horseradish. It’s a very popular side dish

Mizeria- made with either tomatoes or cucumbers. It’s a salad with vegetables and sour cream.”

“I used to live in The Netherlands and I love the country, but the food I was enjoying a lot was Kibbeling!

I can really just recommend it to anyone.

Eat it when you are in Rotterdam at the Maarkthall.”

I always cringe when I watch people trying Vegemite and eating a ton of it not even most Australians who have grown up on the stuff would like it like that.”

“Scottish Indian Food

It’s a distinct thing, different even from British Indian. Lots of onion based gravy blended down to hide the vegetables, crisp fried pakoras, huge pillowy naan.

It wouldn’t be recognizable by an Indian person but it follows its own conventions – every Scottish Indian Restaurant will have largely the same dishes on the menu with some house specialities.

It’s the most comforting thing to me, and there’s probably an argument for it being the most authentic Scottish food – the vast majority of people here will have eaten a tikka masala way more often than venison or salmon.

And we love to argue about which place does it best.”

7. USA!

“A crab/seafood boil (if you’re up in Maine, USA).

It’s a delicious mess of crab, red potatoes, ears of corn, sausage, and whatever seafood you want to add like shrimp, mussels, lobster, etc.

You boil it all together in a big pot with old bay, white wine, and a bunch of other seasonings and then you dump it out onto a picnic table and everyone goes to town on it.

It’s a glorious mess!”

8. Viva Mexico!

“Tacos.

Taco Bell ain’t nothing compared to the original here in Mexico.

Also this plate called birria which is kinda like beef stew but with a little twist.”

9. England.

“Fish and chips, out of the paper. Preferably eaten on the sea front, on a cool day. Mushy peas or curry sauce optional but delicious.

Alternatively, go to the black country and get the battered chips because for some reason it’s not enough that the fish is covered in batter, we must have the chips battered too.

And it is glorious.

While you’re at it, get some bread and butter and make a chip butty because that is comfort food. You want the chips hot enough to melt the butter a little bit.

A full English breakfast. And then you must also try a Scottish, Welsh, Northern Irish and Irish version at some point too.

And find a pub with a nice fire on a cold night and drink a pint of something local. We have so many breweries in the UK, so look for guest ales or ciders and try one. Most good pubs will recommend something.”

10. I’m getting hungry…

“Argentina.

Milanesas, asado (for meat lovers), dulce de leche, mate, chocotorta, empanadas, choripan (we eat them usually with asado.

We also have morcipan but the most popular one is choripan hahah) and alfajores.”

“If you’re traveling to India, each frekkin region will have excellent and distinct cuisine.

Pork Vindaloo, Chettinad Chicken and appam, Bhapa Ilish (Hilsa fish coated with spices, wrapped in banana leaves, steamed), Makkai roti with sarson saag, vada pao, aloo tikki and other chaat, some mutton gosht and naan (I forget the name of the area now where this is found, in Mumbai).. these are just a few that come to mind.

Indian cuisine is so diverse and brilliant.”

“If you go to Spain, maybe try Tumbet. It’s a Majorcan dish consisting of stacked layers of fried eggplant, zucchini and potato, with some bayleaf dressed tomato sauce on top.

Yep, it’s absolutely amazing, and sadly, I think people don’t really know any Spanish dish other than tortilla, jamon and paella.”

13. Okay, now my mouth is watering.

“Chicken Rice in Singapore.

It is a staple everywhere and you can select either steamed or roasted chicken. Rice is fragrant and cooked in chicken broth.

The accompanying sweet soy sauce and chili-garlic-lime make the whole dish.”

Gold Star Families and Veterans Can Visit any National Park for Free

If you know anything about how veterans and the families of those who gave their lives in service to America are treated when the fighting and serving are done, then you know they don’t get nearly enough.

Not enough thanks, not enough healthcare, not enough financial support, you name it.

And though it may seem like a small thing to let them into the country’s national parks for free, I mean…at least it’s something.

Recently the Department of Veterans Affairs announced that U.S. military veterans and gold star families will have free access to all national parks, wildlife refuges, and other federal lands for as long as they live.

Secretary of the Interior, David L. Bernhardt, issued a statement.

“With the utmost respect and gratitude, we are granting Veterans and Gold Star Families free access to the iconic and treasured lands they fought to protect starting this Veterans Day and every single day thereafter.”

The passes known as America the Beautiful grant access to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites and 400 million acres of public lands, including Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, Arches, and Mount Rushmore. They normally run you $80 a year.

To nab complimentary access, all veterans have to do is provide identification showing they were in the armed forces, the U.S. National Guard, or the Reserves.

Gold star families, who have lost a family member while they were serving in a war or military operation outside the U.S. or in an international terrorist attack.

Staying physically active is one of the best ways to nourish our minds and bodies, so as long as everyone is following guidelines as far as social distancing, there’s no reason veterans and their families shouldn’t get out and enjoy.

The Creepy Mothman of West Virginia Gets a Closer Look in New Documentary

If you’re not into the kinds of tales that send weird chills down your spine, then you may never have heard about the mysterious Mothman who appeared in Point Pleasant, West Virginia back in the 1960s.

In November of 1966, two couples spotted a winged, man-shaped monster near the “TNT area,” a collection of abandoned bunkers where explosives were stored during WWII. The local newspaper reported on the events, and suddenly, more sightings began popping up.

When nearly 50 people were killed in a bridge collapse the following December, more than a few Point Pleasant residents believed the Mothman could have caused the tragedy.

The mysterious creature’s popularity endured with the help of a 1975 novel by John Keel, The Mothman Prophecies, which also spawned a 2002 movie adaptation starting Richard Gere and Laura Linney.

While the bulk of the sightings happened back in the 60’s, some are still reporting close encounters today. The creature has inspired a statue, a museum, and an annual festival that all bring tourists (and tourism dollars) to the small, West Virginia community.

Now, director Seth Breedlove is tackling the history of the Mothman in his documentary, The Mothman LegacyIn it, he investigates the history and legacy of the creature and also interviews more recent eyewitnesses to its appearance.

Breedlove appears to be a bit hooked on the topic, as he also directed The Mothman of Point Pleasant back in 2017, which focuses on the more historical accounts, along with the bridge catastrophe.

The latest documentary, bolstered by author and expert Jeff Wamsley, who has written two books on the subject, doesn’t try to solve or disprove the mystery, but instead seems to almost celebrate the enduring urban legend.

It’s fascinating viewing any time of the year, and for any mood.

That said, if you’re looking for something delightfully mysterious and spooky, this should definitely fit the bill.

You Can Rent Out This Entire Island in Italy for About $100 Per Person Each Night

Anna, the Airbnb host, currently rents the island out for $112 a night for one or two people, but the island can accommodate up to 16 guests total.

If you can find 15 friends to bring along, the total cost of $774 per night divided by 16 comes out to just under $50 a night per person.

This private island is located next to Cavallino-Treporti, and can only be reached via an eight minute boat ride from Cavallino-Treporti Church, says hostess Anna.

The lodging provided is described as a “typical Venetian Farmhouse” complete with 6 private rooms (9 beds total), a shared kitchen and three shared bathrooms. There is also a spacious dining room and loft.

Although there is no Wifi to be found, guests have run of the entire island. Pictures posted on the Aibnb indicate there are ponies and dogs for guests to interact with, as well as plenty of island to explore.

Guest Xander says in his review of the island,

“The lodging itself was neat; historic in feel, right down to the squeaky floorboards…Their dogs were a lot of fun, and we enjoyed their homemade honey that they shared for breakfast…All things considered, if you can find a convenient way to travel there, if they’re not having a hot water issue, and if you either don’t mind bugs or just shut all the doors and windows, the day time was picturesque and like straight out a book.”

While it might have some rough edges, it’s still an island, and it’s still yours for the night!

Geographers define the Arctic Circle as everything at or above 66 degrees and 34 minutes north latitude -more simply, anything between the 66th and 67th parallels in the Northern Hemisphere.

The Arctic Circle keeps strange hours, with the entire winter being more or less dark and other times of the year being sunny all the time. The land encompasses less than 4% of the globe’s surface, but it’s home to hundreds of thousands of people.

5. It’s not totally dark.

First of all, even if the sun doesn’t make it all the way over the horizon, there’s still a sort of twilight that lends light to the skies. Even if the cities there don’t get a true sunrise for up to 65 days each winter, it’s not completely dark all the time.

If you’re looking for the “astronomical polar night” you’ll have to head farther north than 88 degrees latitude, where there are no human settlements. There, the complete and total darkness lasts for around 11 weeks.

4. It’s owned by 8 different countries.

The United States, Canada, Russia, Norway, Finland, Greenland, Denmark, and Sweden all own land that falls north of the border for the Arctic Circle.

3. It’s far colder in the Antarctic Circle.

All of the seawater beneath the North Pole moderates the climate, while the South Pole is a larger, deeper landmass with a far lower average winter temperature – -76 degrees F. The North Pole only (!) gets down to around -40 degrees F.

There are no human settlements in the Antarctic Circle.

2. Murmansk, Russia, is the biggest city.

It’s home to around 295,000 people, as well as the tallest building (236 feet high) in the Arctic Circle.

The second largest city, Norilsk, is also located in Russia, and famous for its mining operations and the historic Nord Kamal Mosque.

Around 295,000 people live in Murmansk, a port city founded in 1916 at the height of World War I. One of its Soviet-era landmarks, the 236-foot (72-meter) Arktika Hotel, is the tallest building north of the Arctic Circle.

The region’s second-largest city is Russian, too. Norilsk, a community of some 179,554 souls, is famous for its mining operations and the historic Nord Kamal Mosque. Outside of Russia, the Arctic Circle’s most populous municipality is Tromsø, Norway, which boasts the world’s northernmost university.

We’re all thinking more about germs and what we touch when we’re in public these days, and that goes double for indoor, confined spaces like airplanes. And while you’re probably not under any kind of illusion that commercial aircraft are super duper clean places, this flight attendant’s TikTok should probably still come with some kind of trigger warning.

Seriously, if you were a germaphobe before the whole pandemic situation, you might not want to subscribe to Kat Kamalani’s TikTok.

Kat has gone viral will all kinds of insider videos, in which she shares tips, tricks, and behind-the-scene knowledge from the airline industry.

This video, though, shows all of the places on airplanes that people touch and touch and touch – and that only get cleaned at the end of the day.

As someone with a fairly severe peanut allergy, I’ve known for years that planes don’t really get cleaned between flights – which shouldn’t come as a surprise to you, either, given how quick the turnaround is between deplaning and boarding the next set of passengers, right?

If I don’t wipe down everything in my tiny sphere, I will end up with puffy eyes and more sneezes than I can clean up with a travel pack of Kleenex.

Which means someone (or many someone’s) have been there before me, touching everything in sight with peanut oil on their fingers.

Your $50,000 salary doesn’t include money for necessary expenses like gas or the van, and you’re welcome to take a friend along for the ride.

Check Out the World’s Largest Chocolate Museum in Switzerland

It really happened! No, Willa Wonka isn’t inviting five lucky kids to tour his chocolate factory in hopes of finding someone to take over his empire, BUT if it’s chocolate you desire, then it’s chocolate you shall receive.

In September 2020, world-famous Swiss chocolatier and confectionery company Lindt opened a new chocolate museum: The Lindt Home of Chocolate, located in in Zurich, Switzerland.

There is plenty to discover in the Lindt Home of Chocolate, including the world’s largest chocolate fountain.

According to the Lindt Home of Chocolate website, this fountain measures over nine meters tall, and drizzles 1,500 liters of chocolate from the golden whisk into the signature Lindor truffle and back again.

Guests are welcome to take their picture with the fountain, so long as you don’t pull an Augustus Gloop!

You can learn all about the origins of chocolate and how Switzerland became the ultimate chocolate capital, through the museum’s guided tours.

You can choose a self-guided audio tour or join a group tour. Either way, you’ll get to see a real chocolate production line in the pilot plant, which allows you to follow a product every step of the way as it is produced.

And yes, before you ask, OF COURSE you’ll be given a chance to sample some delicious chocolate!
