A Filmmaker Showed How Green Screens Work With Before/After Photos

If you are a fan of movies and television, you are probably familiar with green screens and you might not even know it.

A green screen is a backdrop that is most commonly used with a filmmaker or photographer plans to superimpose an image into the frame.

Often, the actors are filmed walking and interacting in front of the backdrop, and the special effect is added after the fact.

Many of us are so used to green screen technology these days that it can be easy to forget just how impressive it really is.

Recently, Ian Hubert shared a few stills from his current project that uses a green screen. As a filmmaker and visual artist, Ian is no stranger to the process.

Ian is currently working on the web series Dynamo Dream, and he is using green screens in a truly creative way.

The show is described as a “sci-fi/fantasy/cute web series,” and it definitely makes sense that the team would be adding a lot of special effects after the shots are filmed.

In fact, fans of the genre are really excited about the work that Ian and his team have produced.

Ian uses a program called Blender for video editing, and his tutorials are some of the most widely shared out there.

In a recent interview with Rokoko, Ian elaborated on what makes this technology so special:

“What I am really excited about is that it is like a new way of filmmaking.

I hadn’t really realized how much of my workflow was based around just avoiding having to do legit character animation.

When I’m working on a scene now, I can just throw the Smartsuit on and animate all the characters.”

Pretty damn cool.

Let’s have one more look at the before/after.

What do you think about Ian’s skills and the use of green screens in general?

The fight for good has made some significant strides in these last few weeks. Breonna Taylor’s murder case has been reopened. They arrested all four officers responsible for the death of George Floyd, and upped the charges against his murderer. LA is redistributing $150 million from the LAPD budget to invest in communities of color. Marches have happened in all 50 states and around the world, pressuring our representatives to introduce legislative change. And all that happened because of the protests, the emails, the donations. But unfortunately the fight is far from over. Just yesterday, Georgia was rampantly suppressing the black vote claiming it was for the safety of voters due to the coronavirus, even though more and more businesses are opening around the country. It’s so frustrating that it’s so hard to get people in power to do the right thing. We elect them hoping they will take the responsibility. It is, after all, their jobs to do so. But it’s an imperfect (REALLY imperfect) system, and the way we fix it is by getting loud, donating, hitting the streets, making angry calls and sending angry emails, and never relenting. I have learned so much these last weeks. My privilege has shielded me from so many horrors – many of which were not even hidden. My eyes are being opened to the police brutality and the over funding crises and I’m mad as hell. But anger is exhausting. What we truly need right now is heart, integrity, and a fuckton of courage. So I hope this helps brighten your day, but never forget that the fight isn’t close to over. Now let’s start down that yellow brick road which hopefully leads to real racial equality. You can find a link in my bio with wonderful resources to help the cause.

Behind-The-Scenes ‘Saturday Night Live’ Stories You’ve Never Heard

Saturday Night Live can be considered a cultural institution in the United States. Generations of people have grown up watching the weekend comedy hour, and a lot of people continue to watch it each week.

With a show that has been so popular for so long, it can be easy to assume that we know everything there is to know about the cast and crew, both of the past and the present.

But there are always secrets out there, even for a show’s most diehard fans.

Here 14 behind-the-scenes Saturday Night Live stories that even the show’s biggest fans haven’t heard yet.

1. Will Ferrell for a whole season

That’s right: funnyman Will Ferrell once wore the exact same outfit — jeans, a Western-style shirt, and a trucker hat — for an entire season of the show.

2. Seth Meyers used to get pranked.

Fred Armisen and Bill Hader used to have a favorite hobby: calling Seth Meyers in the middle of the night as a prank.

The pair would pretend they were the hosts of a radio show, and that they had accidentally given out Seth’s phone number on the air.

3. Bill Hader couldn’t handle Kate.

One of the big rules at SNL is that anyone who watches someone audition absolutely cannot laugh, no matter how funny they are.

The story goes that during Kate McKinnon’s audition, Bill Hader had to be removed from the room because he couldn’t stop cracking up.

4. Larry David once quit.

Larry David got so mad that his sketches didn’t make it to the show that he once stormed out of the studio and quit… but then came right back to work on Monday.

5. The season 27 wrap party was wild.

The writers threw a massive party that included a slip ‘n’ slide made up of spilled punch, and Horatio Sanz fractured his ribs while sliding!

6. They made bets about Paris Hilton.

Seth Meyers bet $1,000 that he’d be the first person Paris would ask a personal question of, but in the end, no one won the money.

7. Will Ferrell accidentally punched Ellen.

When Ellen DeGeneres hosted the show, Will accidentally punched her in the face while rehearsing!

8. Cheri Oteri almost missed her audition.

The SNL alum had terrible food poisoning the night before her audition, though she ended up making it.

9. Rachel Dratch threw out her back.

Rachel once threw out her back during a read-through, and Johnny Knoxville offered her a pile of miscellaneous pills that he pulled out of his pocket.

10. Male cast members were kind of gross.

It turns out that male cast members used to pee in cups and just… leave the cups around their offices.

In fact, Tina Fey explained that this appears to be the difference between male and female cast members of SNL.

11. Kate McKinnon put a hole in her wall.

The story goes like this: after finding out the SNL offices were being renovated and a wall would be torn down, Kate decided to dance around her office with a hammer.

She ended up knocking a big hole in the wall… and then found out they were just being painted, not torn down. Oops!

12. John Hamm helped out.

The night before John hosted the show, a heavily pregnant Amy received a call that her OBGYN had died of a heart attack.

When she burst into tears, no one knew what to do.

John sprang into action, telling her, “This is a really important show for me, I need you to get your shit together.”

Amy ended up laughing.

13. Barack Obama made a change.

Lorne Michael once cut a sketch from the show because a then-candidate Obama thought it was funny, but too much.

14. Dog food saved Eddie.

Nearly the entire cast was fired during Eddie Murphy’s first season, but he kept his job because the head writer, Michael O’Donoghue, thought that Eddie actually ate dog food on the air.

It turns out he ate hash instead, but he still had this job.

Aren’t those stories wild? Which one is your favorite?

15 Times Television Shows Helped Kids Make Sense of Really Hard Subjects

TV, video games, and screens in general get a pretty bad rap these days from parents and pediatricians and everyone who wants to share their opinions with you. And while moderation is key and there’s some validity to arguments about exercise and brain development, the truth is that for some kids, television is where they learn how to deal with the hard lessons.

It’s where they see themselves for the first time, or see people different from them for the first time, or get answers to questions they were too afraid to ask in real life.

These 15 episodes of television were surely a lifeline for more than a few kids out there, and I say it’s okay to celebrate that.

15. The depictions of anxiety and panic attacks on Alexa & Katie.

“At the end of season three, Katie has a panic attack on her way to take the SAT, and is diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. The scene where Katie has the attack is heartbreaking; it’s really realistic and well done. They don’t just sweep this issue under the rug after this one episode, throughout season four anxiety is something that is openly discussed between Alexa and Katie and Katie and her mom.”

“She has another panic attack in season four, in which a friend helps her through it with realistic methods for doing so. I’ve never seen a kids show that openly talked about mental health issues or therapy, and they did it so, so well. As someone with anxiety, I felt incredibly seen by this show. I wish I’d had it around when I was younger.”

—demigodapollocabin

14. “True Colours” (That’s So Raven)

The “True Colours” episode of That’s So Raven where Raven exposes a racist recruiter at a clothing shop who won’t hire her because she’s Black.

—lorianneb

13. In “Alone at Sea,” Steven Universe takes on the importance of leaving a relationship and asserting boundaries.

“The episode ends with Lapis telling Jasper that what they had was unhealthy, which was a good way to teach kids they have the power to say ‘no’ when someone is abusive toward them.

Steven himself is great in the episode and works as a support system for Lapis to get over her trauma.”

—nameless_demon

12. The importance of the Black Lives Matter movement on Blue Peter.

“Our media has been pretty poor at conveying why this is so important in the UK and Blue Peter succeeded in a kids show where adult programming and news has failed!”

—vinnieesco

11. Helga getting therapy to deal with her neglectful parents on Hey, Arnold!

“The way that they explained Helga’s anger from her mother’s alcoholism, her father’s disinterest, and having to live in the shadow of a ‘perfect’ older sister.

Seeing the reason Helga was angry and a bit of a bully really helped me to see some of my classmates differently. Plus, it normalised therapy for me as a kid – something that has helped as an adult.”

—jenniferr4786d9525

10. As Told By Ginger tackled being disappointed by our parents.

“Ginger’s mother sends her flowers, knowing the dad won’t follow through, and signs them from him.

Ginger knows what she did and thanks her mother.”

—ashleyk4ad987d77

9. Hey, Arnold showed Arnold being sad that his parents weren’t there for parent’s day, but realizing his grandparents were a perfect family.

“I found that episode so comforting because I was also raised by a grandparent.”

—violadelessops

8. Foster kid representation in The Story of Tracy Beaker.

“You had everyone from temporary foster kids, aged-out kids, poor income, and wealthy families – and a great diverse cast for something that started in 2002!”

—vinnieesco

7. On “When Carl Met George,” Arthur introduces a character with autism and attempts to show the world through his eyes.

“I use Brain’s explanation to show people what it’s like in my own head sometimes. It helps as a general guide and I like the way they emphasize the idea that things are different for everyone.

I also love seeing the characters treat their autistic friend, Carl, like he’s just one of the gang. It’s how I wish things had been for me.”

—aislincross

6. Doc McStuffins helped out someone who was feeling insecure about their stutter.

“She explains how even though it’s hard for the words to come out it doesn’t mean you’re broken. My husband grew up stuttering and still stutters so when he watched this with our kids he was ready to cry.

He was bullied growing up for his stutter (and has been fired because of it), but that episode is such a great explainer to kids and adults about the basics of what stutterers deal with.”

—krosemizzou

5. London and Maddie facing body shaming, but ultimately coming to love themselves, on The Suite Life of Zack and Cody.

“They have a fashion show and London’s friend insults everyone telling London she’s too curvy and Maddie she’s too thin.

Considering how similar the girls’ body types were, it really reinforced how much someone’s mean comments can change a person’s point of view.”

—prettypink1818

4. Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood tackles our differences, and that it’s great that no one is exactly the same, in a way that’s very accessible for young kids.

“My daughter watches Daniel Tiger a lot and I appreciate the way they discuss some serious subjects.

It’s definitely a less advanced approach because it’s geared toward preschoolers, but they talk about death and loss, handling anger and frustration, how to work through jealousy of a new sibling, and differences between individuals (Prince Wednesday’s cousin, Chrissy, uses crutches and braces to walk and the other kids are curious about it.

Prince Wednesday gets defensive about his cousin, but Chrissy lets the other kids ask her questions without making them feel bad).”

—cranemaiden

3. Karli’s mom going to rehab for opioid addiction on Sesame Street.

“I’m older now, but I grew up with that and my sister deals with addiction. I watched it and cried because I thought it was beautiful and explained the child’s feelings.

Showed it to my brother in law and my nieces so the girls could see that it’s normal to feel what they are feeling and they can talk about it.”

—jacobhyde

2. That’s So Raven got body positive after Raven realized a magazine she posed for had photoshopped her image.

“She gets angry (rightfully so) and at the end of the episode, shows up to model her dress at a fashion show, where she was supposed to let someone thinner walk on the runway. And she totally rocks it.

As someone who struggled with body image and an eating disorder at the airing of the episode, it was really nice and showed that all types of bodies are beautiful.”

—dawn1094

1. The episode of Full House when Stephanie learns one of her classmates is being abused, and tells an adult.

“At the end of the episode they did a PSA to tell viewers that child abuse is a very real thing and what you can do about it. In fact most shows in the ’90s had PSAs at the end of the episode and I don’t understand why they discontinued doing that.

Even Sonic the Hedgehog did one about what to do if an adult touched you inappropriately.”

—jennies4783ed5b8

Some of these brought a tear to my eye.

Is there an episode of television that changed the way you looked at the world? That helped you understand something tough or confusing? That let you know your experiences weren’t unique? Tell us about it in the comments!

James Cordon’s 3-Minute Sing Along With ‘The Muppets’ Is Pretty Great

Most people have spent some time on the classic children’s series The Muppets. For my generation it was The Muppet Babies, a show my own children are getting into these days, and their recent revival in movies for adults has been a charming walk through our youths.

Celebrities are getting into it, too, grabbing chances to appear with The Muppets when they can, and James Cordon did just that when he invited some of them onto his show.

After Statler and Waldorf – the two grumpy old men from The Muppets – showed on on James Cordon’s late show to drag his monologue jokes, we’re sure that the Muppets aren’t big fans of the television hosts comedy.

The two heckle him over a video call until Kermit and Fozzie show up, presumably to rescue the human, but end up panning all of the jokes, too.

It’s worth a watch.

Even if the crew isn’t into Cordon’s comedy, their newest video together seems to suggest they do rather enjoy his singing.

Or maybe they just like singalongs?

Either way, we’re glad for it, because him, Reggie Watts, and the house band singing along with the Muppets to the Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends” is charming and delightful.

Yes, all three minutes of it.

Go ahead and watch it, because you know you want to.

Keep the tab open, too, because the chances are high that you’re going to want a smile sooner rather than later.

You’re welcome!

‘Supermarket Sweep’ Is Back on Netflix and Viewers Are Feeling It!

2020 hasn’t been the best year, and we’re all craving some nostalgia.

Even a simple trip to the supermarket as it used to be would be something to look forward to, so it’s no wonder that Supermarket Sweep is back!

That’s right kids! Your favorite game show where you guess how much groceries cost… it’s back in all of it’s nostalgic glory!

And mo, it’s not a reboot—the show from the early 1990s that you remember is airing once again on Netflix. Maybe it’s the big hair or the cheap groceries, but whatever it is, viewers can’t get enough and are talking about it non-stop on social media.

The idea for the game goes back to the 1960s.

Supermarket Sweep has teams of contestants answer trivia questions and run around a grocery store, collecting as many high-priced items as possible. Netflix has so far offered up one season of the show from 1993, which is easy to binge-watch in an afternoon, as the episodes are only about 20 minutes long.

The very first run of the show aired in 1965 before popping up again in its early ’90s incarnation. It was revived yet again in the early 2000s, and a new version of the show hosted by SNL’s Leslie Jones was about to film in 2020 when everything was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Of course, we’ll have to wait for that, so the run from 1993 will have to suffice. To be honest, if Netflix were to air the other seasons, including those from the 1960s, we wouldn’t mind that at all. (Hint, hint.)

Which game shows would you like to see rebooted? Let us know in the comments below!
